New Hardy 65: A Serious Blue-Water Cruiser

The new Hardy 65 is a British-built, go-anywhere traditional blue-water cruiser with a blend of modern comforts and high-tech components.

The 65 is the flagship of the Hardy fleet, which starts at 32 feet. They’re all built by Cockwells, in Falmouth, England. The company says the 65 is “a little ship with a big attitude.”

Standard power is twin 800-hp MAN diesels, with a top speed of 25 knots on the 65’s semi-displacement hull. Optional 1,200-hp MANs produce a top speed of 30 knots.

The Hardy 65 is a serious, seaworthy boat; there aren’t a lot of frills. The side decks have wide walkways, protected by high railings. The sloping windows in the wheelhouse are heated for protection in any weather. And the 65 has state-of-the-art Empirbus digital switching with Raymarine displays.

The wheelhouse has chairs for the captain and a companion. The galley is aft of the helm, across from a dinette. The salon has sofas and settees for relaxing, and the windows are low enough to give seated people a view outside. Double doors aft lead to the cockpit, which is protected by an overhang from the flybridge.

The aft deck has more seating and a table for al fresco dining.  The flybridge has the upper helm and more seating areas, with room aft for a RIB and a crane.

Owners can order accommodations below to hold six to ten berths. The standard layout has the owner’s stateroom amidships, a VIP guest cabin forward, and a two-person cabin on the port side. All the cabins have en suite heads and showers. There’s room for an optional crew quarter aft.

The 65 comes with standard trim tabs and hydraulic bow and stern thrusters for help with docking.

Cockwells Hardy 50DS first look: This handsome offshore boat is surprisingly nippy

While Cornwall-based Cockwells offers a world-renowned line in bespoke superyacht tenders and classical semi-production motor launches, its acquisition of Hardy’s assets in 2020 has seen it forge ahead with a new line of tough, semi-displacement boats...

Known (you guessed it!) as the Cockwells Hardy motor yacht line, it is spearheaded by the 65DS – and although the new 50DS is inspired by the original Hardy 50 , it’s also designed to deliver the same order of experience as that award-winning flagship.

To that end, this robust Category A explorer yacht is capable of speeds approaching 30 knots but it can also run flat and efficient at 8 knots through exposed waters for a claimed range of more than 1,500 miles.

Created in collaboration with British designer, Andrew Wolstenholme, the layout also backs up those passage-making credentials with a very substantial pilothouse orbited by deepset single-level walkaround decks.

Inside the pilothouse itself, a two-tier arrangement separates the seating on the lower level from the galley and the twin helm on the upper level.

That’s a slightly unusual set-up in that it bucks the trend for placing the kitchen at the heart of the action, but the lower saloon and external cockpit are well integrated thanks to a set of folding doors, so in terms of open-plan living, it certainly has its merits.

The cockpit also occupies a decent footprint and comes with useful overhead shelter from the optional flybridge. But again, rather than pursuing the trend for inward or aft-facing seats, the Cockwells Hardy 50DS uses built-in bench seating around the aft end with a secure central gate to access the big aft swim platform.

Down below, that raised forward saloon creates plenty of volume for a pair of well-sized guest cabins. There’s also a shared port bathroom, as well as a starboard ensuite for the forward owner’s cabin .

It’s a handsome boat too, in quite a classical offshore fashion, but if there are elements you’d be keen to change, the yard’s hands-on control means you can customise it in pretty much any way you choose.

History of Hardy Motor Boats

Hardy Motor Boats, a prestigious British boat manufacturing company, was established in 1975 by two sailing enthusiasts, David and John Hardy. Inspired by the Norfolk Broads, their birthplace and one of the UK's best-known boating areas, they embarked on developing well-crafted traditional watercraft. The Hardy brothers' pioneering approach meant they designed and produced seaworthy boats to withstand the sometimes unpredictable British weather, using the latest construction methods of the time.

Fast forward to 2007, Windboats Marine, another esteemed British boat builder known for its high-quality craftsmanship, acquired Hardy Motor Boats. With this acquisition, Hardy’s portfolio expanded significantly with the integration of Windboats’ lineup of motor sailers and pilot house yachts. Based in North Walsham, Norfolk, Windboats had been in operation since 1920 and had an admirable legacy of building a wide range of vessels from sailing yachts to military vessels.

Today, Hardy Motor Boats continues to flourish under Windboats Marine, manufacturing their signature high-quality motorboats that excelled in design, performance, and safety from North Walsham. The Hardy range of motorboats, known for their robustness, has evolved over four decades adapting contemporary technology and design trends while keeping the Hardy charm intact.
