The Liberty Square Riverboat begins with its captain, Horace Bixby, welcoming guests aboard The Liberty Belle as well as introducing his pilot, Samuel Clemens (known to future generations as the author, Mark Twain). You are currently on Clemens’ 100th journey aboard the Liberty Belle.

Before the Liberty Belle leaves port, Sam sets the scene for the ride ahead by warning guests to stay behind the railings, as river pirates are known to frequent the area.

As you sail down the river, you’ll see the sights of Frontierland, which for the purpose of the ride was once just a boom town but is well on its way to becoming a big city. Over the announcement system, Sam mentions that the large peak in Frontierland is known as Chick-A-Pin Hill (also known to Disney guests as the former Splash Mountain and future Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ).

Continuing on, the boat passes Sam’s “old stomping ground”,  Tom Sawyer Island .

Next, he points out  Big Thunder Mountain where the water gets so hot that geysers erupt. Sam explains that Native Americans used to think that the geysers were spirits and that’s why they named the mountain “Big Thunder Mountain” and the moniker stuck.

As your boat ride continues, you’ll see Beacon Joe and his dog Rufus in front of his bait shop.

You’ll then see Powhatan Native Americans gathering and pass by an unidentified Indian village. Down the river, the Liberty Belle reaches Cutthroat Corner where riders are told they are most likely to find river pirates.

Before returning to port in Liberty Square, the Liberty Belle passes The Haunted Mansion . Sam informs guests that rumor has it that the mansion was built on a Native American burial ground, and now 999 ghosts haunt it.

Finally, the Liberty Belle reaches port and Sam and Captain Bixby say goodbye as the boat docks and guests are directed to disembark.

Is Liberty Square Riverboat Kid-Friendly?

This is a great ride for the whole family to take a break from the crowds of Magic Kingdom.

Strollers are not allowed in most queues at Walt Disney World. Instead, you’ll need to leave your stroller in the designated stroller parking area near the entrance to the queue.

The Liberty Square Riverboat is one of the few attractions that can trace its history back to before Disneyland or Walt Disney World even opened.

Walt Disney initially came up with the idea for a Mississippi steamboat attraction for the Disney Studio in Burbank, California. However, the Burbank Studio did not have the land to build the attraction so Walt decided to transfer the concept to Disneyland.

wigwams as seen from liberty square riverboat

In order to create the attraction, Disney had to construct the first American-made, working steamboat in 50 years. Admiral Joe Fowler oversaw the construction of what would become The Mark Twain Riverboat in Disneyland.

The Mark Twain was built in two separate pieces. The hull was constructed in San Pedro, California and the deck was built at the Disney Studios in Burbank. The ship was assembled in Disneyland and The Mark Twin Riverboat debuted on July 17, 1955, for Disneyland’s opening day.

When Walt Disney World was in development, the riverboat was one of the attractions Imagineers decided to include in the opening day plans, however, it wasn’t quite ready.

The Admiral Joe Fowler Riverboat opened one day after the park, on October 2, 1971. It was named in tribute to the man who had helped to create Disneyland and Walt Disney World, as well as the Riverboat attractions.

thunder mountain views from liberty square riverboat

When the riverboat first debuted, live entertainment could often be found on deck because there wasn’t much else for guests to see on the Rivers of America at the time.

Since Walt Disney World did not yet have enough attractions to meet demand, in 1973 a second steamboat was built. The Richard F. Irvine  Riverboat entered into service on May 20, 1973. It was named after the late Disney executive, Richard F. Irvine, who oversaw the planning and construction of Walt Disney World.

The only difference between the two steamboats was that The Admiral Joe Fowler had two smokestacks, while The Richard F. Irvine only had one.

In fall of 1980, The Admiral Joe Fowler Riverboat was destroyed in a drydock accident. Disney decided not to repair it, and the bell from the riverboat was added to the #4 engine known as the Roy O. Disney on the  Walt Disney World Railroad .

ferries to Magic Kingdom

In 1996, The   Richard F. Irvine  was completely refurbished and returned to service as The   Liberty Belle  Riverboat.

The attraction itself was renamed the Liberty Square Riverboat to make it easier to remember and to tie the boat in with Liberty Square.

With one ship gone and the other one renamed, Disney decided to pay homage to Admiral Fowler and Richard Irvine by naming two ferries that run from the Ticket and Transportation Center to the Magic Kingdom after them in 1999.

The narration aboard the Liberty Belle has expanded as more rides have been added to Frontierland . References to  Tom Sawyer Island , Splash Mountain (the future Tiana’s Bayou Adventure ), and  Big Thunder Mountain Railroad  have all been added to the script.

native american scene on liberty square riverbaot

In 1992, the Powhatan Native Americans were added to the attraction after the release of the Disney-animated film, Pocahontas .

The  Liberty Belle  underwent extensive rehab from September 2005 to September 2006, and then in 2018 it was completely overhauled with a new boiler.

Other Fun Details

  • Captain Horace Bixby, the name given to the Liberty Belle’s captain, was a real steamboat captain on the Mississippi. Horace Bixby and Sam Clemens met aboard a steamboat called The Paul Jones . Bixby agreed to take Sam on as his apprentice. About 21 years later, the now-famous Mark Twain reunited with Captain Bixby in St. Louis. The captain even makes an appearance in Twain’s book, Life on the Mississippi .
  • Inside The Liberty Belle’s Salon, there is a copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.
  • Watch the Audio-Animatronic dog outside of Beaker Joe’s. Every once and a while he will turn his head as a fish jumps by.

liberty square riverboat dog

  • To pay homage to the Samuel Clemens connection, in Disneyland the attraction is known as the Mark Twain Riverboat.
  • Crates located on the banks of Frontierland are imprinted with “Tell City Tool Co.” Tell City is a real town located in Indiana on the banks of the Mississippi River. It was one of the United States’ first “planned cities.” Another crate has “71” on it to honor the year the Magic Kingdom opened and another says “Russel’s Falls” after Davy Crockett’s sidekick, George E. Russel.
  • The attraction’s landing building is one of the few in the Magic Kingdom that does not employ forced perspective. This may be to hide the riverboat from guests in Liberty Square where a steam-powered riverboat would not fit the land’s theming.

Riding  when crowds are lower, especially during mealtimes and the Electrical Water Pageant, can also mean shorter wait times. Avoid exiting immediately after a performance of The Hall of Presidents, when crowds flood the area.

History and Design

The Liberty Square Riverboat has a long history, dating back to Walt Disney’s original vision for Disneyland . Walt incorporated a riverboat attraction into his plans for Disneyland, using the iconic Mark Twain Riverboat on the Rivers of America as inspiration. When  designing Magic Kingdom, Imagineers brought a similar riverboat to life on the park’s Rivers of America. The original Liberty Square riverboat was named the Admiral Joe Fowler. It operated for over 7 years before being damaged beyond repair.

The Admiral Joe Fowler was replaced in 1973 by the boat currently in operation – the Richard F. Irvine. After an extensive refurbishment in 1996, the Richard F. Irvine was renamed the Liberty Belle. The Liberty Belle is an exact replica of a 19th century paddle wheel riverboat. It stands 47 feet tall and weighs 100 tons. The boat has a maximum capacity of 450 guests over three levels. The  Liberty Belle is powered by a working steam engine that rotates the rear paddle wheel to propel the boat during its journey. While the steam engine is fully functioning, the boat does follow an underwater track for guidance and safety.

Ride Experience

The Liberty Square Riverboat ride experience begins at the loading dock in Liberty Square. Guests board the boat from the middle, second deck, while ramp access for wheelchairs and ECVs is offered on the first deck. As the boat departs, guests are welcomed aboard by a pre-recorded spiel from Captain Horace Bixby. He introduces the pilot guiding this journey – none other than Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain.

Twain shares memories of his many adventures traveling along the Mississippi River as the Liberty Belle passes by Frontierland and approaches Tom Sawyer Island. Along the way, riders can spot wildlife, mining structures, and old settlements along the shores. The narration highlights various sights along the river, including abandoned mines at Cutthroat Canyon and Fort Langhorn on Tom Sawyer Island.

As the boat completes its loop around the island, the majestic facade of The Haunted Mansion comes into view. Twain remarks on legends of the Haunted Mansion being built on sacred native burial grounds as the Liberty Belle returns to dock in Liberty Square, concluding the 12-minute journey. Guests  exit the boat on the first deck and can browse photos taken during the ride that are available for purchase.

In addition to its regular operation, the Liberty Square Riverboat offers special cruises for certain hard ticket events and holidays throughout the year. During Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, the Liberty Belle is decorated with Halloween theming. The boat hosts Happy HalloWishes Dessert Parties that coincide with the special Halloween fireworks show. Guests are served desserts while enjoying premium views of the fireworks bursting over Cinderella Castle. For the holidays, the Liberty Belle gets a festive Christmas overlay and operates during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. It offers Holiday Wishes Dessert Parties to pair with the Christmas fireworks spectacular.

The Liberty Square Riverboat also occasionally has evening cruises during Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular fireworks with unique viewing opportunities for Star Wars fans. Outside the special events, guests might catch the Liberty Belle testing its steam whistle after refurbishments and at other random times. When the steam whistle blows, it makes for an unforgettable part of the Liberty Square atmosphere. So  beyond its regular operation, the Liberty Belle delivers even more magic through special holiday cruises and one-of-a-kind experiences like the steam whistle that delight guests.

  • Arrive to board the Liberty Belle 5–10 minutes before the scheduled departure time printed on the sign at the entrance. This will ensure you get a spot and don’t have to wait for the next boat.
  • The top deck offers the best views but can get very hot in the sun. Seek shade underneath the overhangs on the lower decks if needed.
  • Bring your camera or phone to snap photos of unique magic kingdom views along the river.
  • Keep an eye out for live entertainment along the shores of Frontierland and special decorations during holidays.
  • Stop by the Liberty Square Riverboat sign near the exit after disembarking to browse onboard photos available for purchase.
  • There are no restrooms on the boat, so make sure and use the bathroom before riding

Comparison to Other Disney Riverboat Rides

The Liberty Square Riverboat ride bears many similarities to riverboat attractions across Disney theme parks worldwide. Each boat offers a scenic tour of an artificial river with references to Mark Twain and American history. However , there are some variations in narration, sights along the river, and overall ride experience between the different versions. Here’s how Walt Disney World’s Liberty Belle compares to riverboats at other Disney Parks:

Disneyland  – The Mark Twain Riverboat is a nearly identical ride experience to the Liberty Belle, complete with Twain narration and a relaxing voyage around Tom Sawyer Island and Frontierland. One key difference is Disneyland’s Columbia Sailing Ship that also navigates the river.

Tokyo Disneyland  – The Western River Railroad at Tokyo Disneyland features similar sights along the Rivers of America but follows a different path around the entire Critter Country area.

Hong Kong Disneyland  – Mystic Manor is visible from Hong Kong Disneyland’s Jungle River Cruise, offering a view of one of the park’s most popular attractions during the ride.

Shanghai Disneyland  – The Voyage to the Crystal Grotto winds through rocky caves with dazzling effects as part of its tour around Fantasyland, a very different sight from Liberty Square and Frontierland.

Disneyland Paris  – No riverboat ride exists at Disneyland Paris. Guests can walk through a full-scale replica of a frontier steamboat outside the Disneyland Railroad station.

The Liberty Square Riverboat continues to be a beloved classic, inviting guests of all ages to embark on a peaceful cruise back in time. For over 50 years, across Disney theme parks worldwide, these iconic boats offer an opportunity to recharge and appreciate the magic of Disney from a new perspective. A  ride aboard the Liberty Belle showcases Disney’s knack for blending nostalgia, nature, and storytelling into an attraction experience that stands the test of time. So be sure to hop aboard for a relaxing voyage across the Rivers of America on your next visit to the Magic Kingdom!

Did you know.

  • Liberty Square Riverboat is a steam-powered paddle wheeler, a replica of a vessel that one may have seen sailing the Mississippi River during the 19 th century. Liberty Square Riverboat does not, however, operate solely on steam power; it is aided by a submerged rail.
  • The vessel’s official name is Liberty Belle , a moniker it has held since 1996. From 1973 to 1996, the riverboat was entitled Richard F. Irvine , after a Disney executive.
  • The Liberty Square Riverboat embarked on its first voyage on October 2, 1971, one day after the Magic Kingdom opened. Titled Admiral Joe Fowler , after a retired navy admiral who was instrumental in the building of both Disneyland Park and the Magic Kingdom, this vessel was inadvertently destroyed during a 1980 refurbishment. Richard F. Irvine / Liberty Belle has served as the Magic Kingdom’s sole paddle wheeler since 1980.

  • Liberty Square Riverboat is currently the only boat to sail the Rivers of America. Previously, “Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes” operated from opening day, October 1, 1971, until 1994; and “Mike Fink Keel Boats” sailed from opening day through April 29, 2001.
  • Liberty Square Riverboat’s counterpart at Disneyland is Mark Twain Riverboat . Disneyland also offers two seasonal vessel experiences: “Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes” and “Sailing Ship Columbia ,” a replica of Columbia Rediviva , an 18 th -century merchant ship.

Five Things to Know About the Liberty Square Riverboat

The Liberty Square Riverboat attraction docks at – you guessed it – Liberty Square. The boat itself is named the Liberty Belle. It’s an old-timey (read: historic) steam-powered paddle-wheel riverboat that travels around the Rivers of America. As you ride, you’ll hear a recorded narrator share memories of Mark Twain’s time on the Mississippi. If you want to paddle along with us, keep reading. Oar (dad pun) to skip to the whys, wheres, and hows, here’s your shortcut .

1. You’ll take a step back in time.

The Liberty Belle Riverboat is a large (47-foot tall) working reproduction of the boats that ran up and down the Mississippi River in the 19th century. It’s loaded with amazing details, as you might expect. The wood craftsmanship throughout is absolutely meticulous! The large paddle is powered by an actual steam engine that functions by converting water from the Rivers of America into steam, turning the paddle to propel the boat.

2. It’s full steam ahead!

The ride begins as its captain, Horace Bixby,  welcomes guests aboard. He introduces his pilot, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and lets you know you’re in good hands, since this is Clemens’ 100th trip piloting the Liberty Belle. You depart from the dock and navigate the winding “river”.  Along the way, you’ll get views of the Magic Kingdom you just can’t get anywhere else. You’ll see Tom Sawyer Island, Harper’s Mill, and Fort Langhorn from a new vantage point. Other sights from the American frontier include settler’s cabins, old mining paraphernalia, a Native American village, animatronic wildlife, and even Wilson’s Cave Inn from Davy Crockett and the River Pirates. The riverboat also offers unique perspectives of the Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. From the top deck especially, you’ll see Frontierland and Liberty Square in a whole new way.

riverboat ride disney world

As you ride, Sam Clemens offers his recollections of riding up and down the Mighty Mississippi. He points out various landmarks and shares a little about what he learned during his time on the river. Periodically, the horn and bell system are used, so you have to be prepared for the occasional and unpredictable ear-blasting loud outbursts. (I found that being toward the stern, rather than the bow, made the horn a bit more bearable.)

3. This Belle has quite a back story.

The first boat to sail the Rivers of America in the Magic Kingdom was the Admiral Joe Fowler. Named after Disneyland’s construction supervisor, it debuted on October 2, 1971, the day after the park’s official opening. In 1973, a second boat, the Richard F. Irvine, debuted. It was named after the Disney executive who oversaw the planning of Walt Disney World. Both boats ran on the river until 1980. The Richard F. Irvine was overhauled and received an all-new superstructure of aluminum and vinyl. The boat was renamed the Liberty Belle, and the attraction itself was renamed the Liberty Square Riverboat to make it easier to remember and to tie the boat in with Liberty Square. (Side note: two of the three ferry boats running from the Transportation and Ticket Center to the Magic Kingdom are now named the Admiral Joe Fowler and Richard F. Irvine, so their memory lives on!)

The scenery along the Rivers of America has been updated over the years. Tom Sawyer Island was added in 1973 and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in 1980. Similar versions of this attraction have also been added to other Disney Parks. At Disneyland Paris, it’s called the Rivers of the Far West. At Hong Kong Disneyland, there is no Frontierland, so the Imagineers merged the Rivers of America with the classic Adventureland Jungle Cruise attraction.

4. The Liberty Belle has her secrets, too.

Captain Horace Bixby, the Liberty Belle’s captain, was  a real steamboat captain  on the Mississippi. Horace Bixby and Sam Clemens met aboard a steamboat called The Paul Jones. Bixby agreed to take Sam on as his apprentice. About 21 years later, the now-famous Mark Twain reunited with Captain Bixby in St. Louis. The captain even makes an appearance in Twain’s book, Life on the Mississippi.

Inside The Liberty Belle’s Salon, there is a copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.

riverboat ride disney world

The riverboat actually travels along an I-beam guide rail, so the pilot  doesn’t really steer the ship. But that doesn’t mean he’s doing nothing. Rather, the pilot watches for other river traffic, like the Rafts to Tom Sawyer Island, and communicates to the boiler engineer who is on the bottom deck towards the stern. This is where the throttle and reverser are located, so the boiler engineer controls the speed and direction of the riverboat.

5. The Nuts and Bolts.

You can catch a ride on the Liberty Belle at the Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square. There are no health or safety advisories and no height restrictions. Guests may remain in a wheelchair/ECV to ride the Liberty Belle.  Sign language interpreters may be available, depending on when you visit. It’s truly a ride that everyone can enjoy.

The Liberty Belle has a maximum capacity of 450 people. You board the boat at mid-level; disembarking guests exit from the lower deck. There are 4 decks with limited seating available on each (some inside, some outside) but with plenty of space to stand and move around.

riverboat ride disney world

The Liberty Belle provides a stable, gentle ride. I’m vulnerable to motion sickness/sea sickness but have no trouble whatsoever riding the Liberty Belle. It’s a great idea to move around on the deck during this 17-minute trip to be sure to see all the different views.

Bad weather can affect the operation of the Liberty Belle Riverboat. Genie+ is not available, but there’s no need for it. There’s no bad time of day to ride the Liberty Belle. It departs roughly every half-hour and usually the only waiting is waiting for the boat to leave or return. A good time of day to enjoy your ride is when you want a break from the crowds! But it’s worth noting that it closes earlier than the park and other park attractions; there is also no Early Theme Park Entry and no Extended Evening Theme Park hours.

The Bottom Line.

We ride the Liberty Belle nearly every time we visit Walt Disney World. But it’s not for thrill-seekers, to be sure. It’s perfectly peaceful – unless of course you’re right underneath the horn which is jarringly loud. It’s a great way to get out of the crowds, rest a bit, and enjoy a fun ride for every member of the family.

Why Liberty Square Riverboat is a MUST-RIDE MK Attraction

by Maria Salerno · January 12, 2022

riverboat ride disney world

Today, we’re highlighting one of Walt Disney World’s most overlooked attractions that deserves its moment in the spotlight. The Liberty Square Riverboat (aka the Liberty Belle) is the massive boat located in Liberty Square that you’ve most likely walked right past on every single visit to Magic Kingdom.

riverboat ride disney world

We’re highlighting what makes this attraction so unique, and why everyone- regardless of their age- should always take a ride on the Liberty Belle when they visit Magic Kingdom. Let’s explore the boat!

Liberty Belle

riverboat ride disney world

Like many things in the Parks, the Liberty Square Riverboat is a look back in time. The Liberty Belle is a historically accurate, working representation of the steam ferry boats that served as passenger vessels on the Mississippi…’working’ being the key word here!

riverboat ride disney world

The Liberty Belle is a fully steam-powered vessel! The waterways in which you’re sailing on are actually the fuel that propels the Liberty Belle! The water from the Rivers of America are converted into mighty steam power that turns the giant paddle and actually propels you on your journey!

Craftsmanship for the Ages

riverboat ride disney world

We can’t overlook the intricacies of the Liberty Belle’s craftsmanship. On each of the 4 decks, you’ll find beautiful deeply stained, hand-carved wood that makes up the structure of the boat. The beautiful woodwork extends to the hand-laid floor board underfoot as well.

riverboat ride disney world

The ornate carvings in the woodwork beneath the banisters give the Liberty Belle a historically accurate feel that blends perfectly with the Rivers of America’s surrounding themeing.

Historical Nods

Most steam-powered boats featured an enclosed cabin for passengers to relax in.

Be it during a storm or particularly warm day, passengers of the Liberty Belle have that very same luxury as passengers of days past- as the boat features a cabin perfect for escaping the sun- and for brushing up on your history!

Photos of a developing New Orleans and the surrounding Mississippi River route are pictured in black-and-white framed photos on the walls of the cabin.

Don’t stay in one spot and miss your chance to explore the Liberty Belle on your journey…it’s the ONE attraction at Magic Kingdom that encourages you to get up and move around while the ride is in motion!

Why You Should ALWAYS Ride

For starters, the Liberty Belle is the perfect generation-spanning attraction, meaning EVERYONE from infants to Great-Grandparents can hop aboard. Not only will you be journeying on a real steam-powered boat, but you can travel from deck to deck during the voyage to explore the different levels and views that each offer.

riverboat ride disney world

The Liberty Belle is also one of the best attractions for fantastic photos. If you’re a pro photographer or are shooting for Instagram, the views afforded by a trip around the Rivers of America are unparalleled.

Be ready to snap shots of Splash Mountain, Big Thunder, and the Haunted Mansion from angles you won’t get from the walkways.

Finally, the Liberty Belle was one of those attractions originally conceived by Walt himself- and we believe any attraction Walt himself had a hand in creating is ALWAYS must-rides! Have you been aboard the Liberty Belle, or is on your list for your next visit? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Liberty Square Riverboat at Magic Kingdom (A Resorts Gal Guide)

“Welcome aboard the Liberty Belle!” That’s how the narration begins as you embark down the Rivers of America on the Liberty Square Riverboat at Magic Kingdom. This beloved steamboat attraction has quite a history. Walt Disney originally came up with the idea to build a steamboat for Disneyland. He enlisted the help of Admiral Joe Fowler, who oversaw the construction of the steamboat. That first boat was named the Mark Twain.

A duplicate attraction was built for Magic Kingdom Park. While it wasn’t an original opening day attraction, it was close. The Admiral Joe Fowler opened on October 2, 1971, a day after the park’s grand opening. Walt Disney World’s version was named to honor the man Walt hired to oversee the attractions.

Funny enough, in its first few years, Magic Kingdom didn’t have enough attractions to meet the demands of guests. So, a second boat was added in 1973, the Richard F Irvine. Unfortunately, the original Admiral Joe Fowler was damaged at some point, leaving Richard F. Irvine as the sole steamboat attraction. Then, in the 90s, Richard F. Irvine was renamed the Liberty Belle to make the name more relatable to the surrounding Liberty Square.

So, the current riverboat is the Liberty Belle. Fun Fact: now Magic Kingdom’s two ferries are named Admiral Joe Fowler, in honor of the retired navy admiral, and Robert F. Irvine, the construction overseer of Walt Disney World. Let’s look at a few details about taking your own Liberty Square Riverboat voyage.

Liberty Square Riverboat Review

Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square Riverboat attraction is in Liberty Square past The Haunted Mansion and across the walkway from Columbia Harbour House.

There’s a large covered entrance in front of the boat dock. If you were to see the boat docked and guests waiting to board, you can usually join the line and walk on in a matter of minutes.

The waiting area for the Liberty Square Riverboat.

Liberty Belle departs every hour on the hour and the half hour. Typically, this attraction is open from 9:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. (or dusk).

Here is a view of the waiting area from the boat. Most guests will board on the second-floor deck. Guests with wheelchairs load on the first floor. All guests will unload on the first-floor deck.

When you board the Liberty Belle, you can go upstairs, downstairs, or stay on the middle deck.

Whatever you decide, it’s important to stand along the railings when possible. You’ll see several scenes during your trip down the river.

It takes approximately 17 minutes to travel full circle around Tom Sawyer’s Island . One of the first sights you’ll see is Harper’s Mill.

On the opposite side of the boat, you can see Frontierland.

As soon as you set sail, the narration begins. You’ll hear a recording of Captain Horace Bixby announcing that you’re setting sail. He then introduces you to Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain. Samuel Clemens tells the story of his time on the Mississippi River.

Another fun fact, the Liberty Belle Riverboat runs on an underwater track. Unfortunately, she doesn’t run off steam. But you wouldn’t notice this unless the attraction was under refurbishment. When that happens, Disney drains the water from the river, and you can see the track.

After passing Harper’s Mills, you’ll see Splash Mountain, soon to be Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, in the distance.

While we enjoy the Liberty Square Riverboat, it’s not necessarily a must-do attraction, so we’re giving it the red light. Now, if you’re visiting on a busy holiday and need a place to escape with a shorter line than everywhere else, this is an excellent option. We enjoy charting the waters of the Rivers of America, but it does take up what some might consider valuable touring time.

7 totally cool things about liberty square riverboat at walt disney world.

Posted by: Jason Dick April 17, 2018

liberty-square-riverboat

Walt Disney World knows how to create nostalgia.  And a great example of this is the Liberty Square Riverboat in Disney’s Magic Kingdom.  It’s a beautiful, colonial, steam-powered riverboat, and it’ll instantly transport you to a simpler time, as you cruise along the Rivers of America.  Here are our favorite things about the Liberty Square Riverboat.

7. Come One, Come All

We love the exclusivity of the Liberty Square Riverboat!  Because it’s a slow-moving boat ride, there are no height or age restrictions, and it’s a family-friendly attraction.  It might not keep thrill-seekers entertained, but we think it’s a brilliant way to take a break from the chaos of a busy day in the parks.  Wheelchairs and ECVs can board the boat, and there is even sign language interpretation offered at certain times of the week.

6. Fun Facts

Spoilers ahead!  While the attraction is named the Liberty Square Riverboat, the vessel itself is called the Liberty Belle.  Your voyage will last around 20 minutes, and it will take you through the Rivers of America.  For those who are curious, the river is only about 6 feet deep, and the riverboat is actually on a track in the water, much like the boats on Jungle Cruise!  The water itself is dyed green, so that guests won’t be able to see the track, and have the magic ruined.

5. Unparalleled Views

Adventurers who want to explore Tom Sawyer Island can take the log raft over to the island and wander around to their hearts’ content.  But if you’re looking for the best views of Tom Sawyer Island, then you’ll want to ride the Liberty Belle!  The riverboat takes you around the entirety of Tom Sawyer Island, and along the way, you’ll also see unique views of several key Magic Kingdom attractions, including Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain and Haunted Mansion.

4. Delightful Decks

While you enjoy your journey on the Liberty Belle, you can choose from 4 decks to sit or stroll or explore.  The top deck, or pilothouse, contains the wheelhouse and Captain’s quarters.  Wander along the Promenade Deck to view photos and maps from a by-gone era, or enjoy the warm Floridian sun on the Sun Deck.  Of course, the real action is on the Main Deck, where you’ll find the workings of the boat itself, including the pistons that run the paddlewheel, and the boiler.  There’s a lot to explore on your river cruise!

3. Family of Riverboats

The Liberty Belle is in good company!  A riverboat named the Mark Twain debuted in Disneyland when it opened in 1955, and it was the first riverboat that had been build in the country in half a century.  Guests can now also enjoy riverboat attractions at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris.  WDW originally had two riverboats, the Admiral Joe Fowler and the Richard F. Irvine; the latter changed its name to the Liberty Belle in the 1990s, and is now the sole riverboat in the Magic Kingdom.

2. Working Reproduction

History buffs and boat fans alike will enjoy learning about the Liberty Belle.  It’s almost 50 feet tall, with some beautifully crafted woodwork.  It’s actually a faithful replica of the types of boats that used to carry passengers up and down the Mississippi River, which means it’s a unique glimpse into the past.  How does it work?  The Liberty Belle’s steam engine turns water into steam, and it’s that steam that provides the power to turn the paddlewheel, which drives the boat.

1. Famous Voice

Your voyage on the Liberty Belle is narrated by several characters, and Disney fans might recognize one of the recorded voices: it’s none other than Thurl Ravenscroft, the famous voice behind Tony the Tiger (of Frosted Flakes fame).  Thurl provided the speaking and singing voices for many iconic Disney rides – you’ve probably heard his voice many times, even if you didn’t realize it!  He voiced the lead bust in Haunted Mansion, various voices in the Enchanted Tiki Room, Buff in the Country Bear Jamboree, and multiple pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean!

Guest Jumps Into Magic Kingdom River at Disney World, Swims Near Boats

in Disney Parks , Walt Disney World

Left side: A scenic view of the Magic Kingdom theme park with a lake in the foreground and various buildings and attractions in the background under a partly cloudy sky. Right side: A person swimming in greenish water near lush vegetation on a sunny day.

A guest has been spotted swimming in the water at Magic Kingdom.

The intricately designed towers and clock add to its majestic appearance, reminiscent of the enchanting Disney castles that used to be the dream destination for many a sad guest seeking magic.

A viral video shows a guest swimming in the Rivers of America at Magic Kingdom . The video was shared on TikTok by @jeffreytillitt, who claimed the incident occurred during the day on July 16, 2024.

In the brief clip, a guest can be seen swimming from Tom Sawyer Island to a dock near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The guest can be seen paddling and kicking as if they were in an actual swimming pool.

Related: Disney Kills Controversial Series with ‘Acolyte’ Finale

It’s unknown how or why the guest ended up in the water. While cast members cannot be seen in the video, Tillitt explained to viewers that a few employees eventually took hold of the situation.

This is certainly one of the most outlawed and dangerous activities to engage in at Walt Disney World, as not only are there electrical and mechanical structures in the water, but also snakes, alligators, and other types of wild animals.

Plenty of signs can be seen on and around the edge of Rivers of America, informing guests not to step into the water for risk of serious injury.

However, this is not the first time a guest has been spotted in the Rivers of America. Earlier this year, a guest accidentally fell off a Tom Sawyer raft into the water due to a medical issue.

While there’s certainly a lot to enjoy on land, several attractions can only be accessed by way of Disney’s rivers of America. The water provides a stunning visual experience and features two attractions: Tom Sawyer’s Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat, both of which travel on tracks underneath the manmade body of water.

Is Disney World’s Jungle Cruise closing? Here’s what to know before your next trip to Magic Kingdom

riverboat ride disney world

Planning a trip to see the 8th Wonder of the World? You might want to hold off until the holiday season.

Disney World announced that its Jungle Cruise attraction at Magic Kingdom will be closed because of refurbishments starting Aug. 26.

Why is Jungle Cruise closed at Disney World in Orlando?

The exact reasons for the refurbishment has not been released. WDW Magic does share that several permits were recently filed for the attraction, including one with contractor Underwater Engineering Services Inc.

Theme parks fans know the ride has gone through different "reimaginings," adding new animatronics and details to its backstory. It has not been closed to refurbishment since 2017.

When will Jungle Cruise reopen at Disney World in Orlando?

While the company has not announced a specific reopening date, it has shared on its website that the attraction is scheduled to reopen before the winter holidays begin at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

However, the ride has been removed from the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party attraction lists.

Is there a 'Jungle Cruise' movie? How to stream movie starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Emily Blunt

For those who already have a trip to Disney's Magic Kingdom set for fall 2024, you can still get your Jungle Cruise fix.

Disney turned its iconic rides into a movie in 2021, joining the ranks of "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Haunted Mansion" and "Tower of Terror."

Set in 1917 during World War I , USA TODAY wrote that the Jungle Cruise movie stars Emily Blunt as Lily Houghton, a British botanist in search of a legendary ancient tree that has petals with amazing healing properties and the potential to change medicine forever. She needs a way to get to it, though, and she heads down to South America where she meets Frank Wolff (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), a financially strapped riverboat captain who gives tourists jungle rides chock full of groan-worthy jokes and the occasional factoid.

Lily hires Frank and set sail in his dilapidated vessel to find their treasure, dealing with pesky natives, rocky waterfalls and other various obstacles on the way.

The movie also stars Jesse Plemons, Edgar Ramírez and Jack Whitehall.

What other ride, attraction closures are at Disney World resorts in Orlando?

As of July 15, here are the refurbishment closures announced for Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida:

  • World Premiere Food Court , EPCOT - until July 31, 2024
  • Peter Pan's Flight , Magic Kingdom - until Aug. 20, 2024
  • Stormalong Bay and Shipwreck Pool , Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort - TBA
  • Fantasia Pool , Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort - TBA

Disney Tourist Blog also notes that permits have been filed for Big Thunder Mountain at Magic Kingdom, saying it's an "open secret that the roller coaster is closing for roughly one-year." There has not been any announcements from Disney World.

NEW Patent Reveals What a Moana Boat Ride Could Look Like at Disney World

riverboat ride disney world

Disney has been keeping us on our toes by making tons of park expansion announcements — and then leaving us in the dust!

riverboat ride disney world

We’re pretty used to it by now, which is why we keep an eye out for any potential clues or hints about the Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom expansions at Disney World. A while back, we spotted a patent filing that piqued our interest , and now we have an update!

Back in November 2022, we caught wind of a patent Disney filed for a “Boat Motion Simulator” that looked an awful lot like a boat from  Moana !

riverboat ride disney world

Essentially, the system is meant to cause the passengers to feel boat-type motions (rolling, swaying, heaving, etc.). But the system is also meant to use buoyancy to vertically support the boat, so the boat still floats naturally in a simulator or system.

The system could also feature a display and sound system to display images or a soundtrack that syncs up to the motions of the boat.

riverboat ride disney world

But now, it looks as though an updated patent has recently been published for this potential ride. Named, “ Guided boat with external discrete yaw control ,” this technology would allow boats to change points of view as they are propelled through the water. And, the images throughout the patent support the idea that this could be a  Moana  boat ride.

riverboat ride disney world

The new system would work similarly to Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT, where each ride vehicle can be pointed in multiple different directions in order to view scenes they may have missed with just one point of view.

While this new patent shows the ride would still utilize a standard flume system as we saw in the original one, the direction each boat is facing would be controlled by an underwater track or guide. This means that riders might not always be facing the direction the boat is traveling.

riverboat ride disney world

Disney had previously teased that a Moana-themed area  could  replace Dinoland U.S.A. in Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the concept art for that area did appear to show 2 rides for the Moana-inspired land, but since we now know they’re focusing on the “Tropical Americas” for this area, it’s possible that this  Moana  ride could be planned for another park entirely!

riverboat ride disney world

Keep in mind that while the patent application shows that image of the boat simulator with Moana and Maui on the display  that does NOT mean that Disney is actually building a Moana-themed boat motion simulator ride . We’ll let you know if we hear any updates, though!

2024 Beginner’s Guide to Pandora World of Avatar at Disney: Food, Photos, Rides and more!

Are you ready to experience Pandora the World of Avatar at Disney Animal Kingdom?

The land of Pandora will quickly immerse you and takes you automatically into a magical journey with the Na’vi people the Disney way.

The World of Avatar officially opened May 27, 2017 to rave reviews and it’s still drawing millions of visitors each and every year!

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY  DISCLOSURE  FOR MORE INFO.  Which means if you click on certain links, I may receive a small commission at no additional charge to you.

What to expect at Pandora World of Avatar in Animal Kingdom

During my first visit, the land engulfed me as soon as I walk through the gates.

The majesty, the beauty, and the harmonious sounds of nature transported me to another place.

Now I am not a super fan of the movie AVATAR, but as I sat in the newly discovered land, I was totally blown away.

I no longer felt as if I was in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom anymore. If that’s what Disney Imagineers we’re going for, then they absolutely nailed it!

Rides and Attractions at Disney

Now that you know what to expect when you walk in the land of the Na’vi, let’s go over the rides you must experience in Pandora the World of Avatar.

Avatar Flight of Passage

On this one-of-a-kind ride, you get the opportunity to fly on a banshee … an actual mountain banshee!

The aerial predator takes you on a fantastic journey above beautiful Pandora.

The technology that Walt Disney World used in this attraction combines the 3-D type of screen with a new bicycle-like vehicle.

Some guests have compared the Avatar Flight of Passage vehicles to the ones on Tron at Disneyland in Shanghai and in the Magic Kingdom.

If you are a fan of Soarin Around the World , then you will be ecstatic to experience this breathtaking ride.

Except you be on a much bigger quest in an absolutely visceral experience that tops Soarin 100 times!

Avatar Flight of Passage Has a 3-Part Queue

The queue for this ride is an attraction in itself.

Part One: The Outdoor Queue

You will trek through pathways of the Pandoran plants, trees, and mystic water falls for an amazing aerial view of the Avatar-inspired land.

Part Two The In-door Queue:

You will go through a beautiful bioluminescent forest and end up in a laboratory.

The laboratory is where research of the Na’vi people and the moon Pandora takes place.

The studies of Pandora are funded through the Pandora Conservation Initiative program.

In the lab, you will see various plants, organisms, and ecological findings. You will also be able to walk up and see a full-size avatar, which is such an amazing view in itself.

Part Three Boarding the Ride:

The final aspect of the line is where you’re scanned for the Avatar body and then it’s go time! You’re transported into your new form to enjoy the epic Na’vi experience.

The only con with this ride is that if you are prone to motion sickness then you may want to reconsider.

The motion sickness aspect is not as bad as The Simpson Ride at Universal Studios Florida. If you’re super sensitive to motion-based rides, then you want to take precautions.

Also, be mindful that due to the type of ride vehicle, larger adults (taller) may not be able to fit properly on this attraction. Guests have to be a minimum of 44” to ride.

When you have the chance to book your Lightning Lane , do it as soon as possible for Avatar Flight of Passage.

I give this ride, on a ThemeParkHipster scale of 1 to 10 a 10 plus! It is a must-do attraction.

Na’vi River Journey

This is a classic Walt Disney World boat ride adventure. It’s comparable to Frozen or Pirates of the Caribbean.

It takes you on a ride into the bioluminescent rain forest in search of Na’vi Shaman of Songs.

You will meet the great wise one on your journey and you will be in tune with the gorgeous colors of nature and fantasy all wrapped up into one ride.

This isn’t a top thrill attraction, but it is a nice classic Disney experience for those who are fans of this type of ride.

I loved it because it continued to flow the theme of Pandora splendor straight into this river ride.

Not to mention that it’s just down right BEAUTIFUL!

It’s a perfect ride to escape the heat and relax your feet. It’s also a ride the whole family can enjoy together.

I truly enjoyed the Na’vi River Journey. On scale from 1 to 10 I would say that it was probably a 8.5.

Valley of Mo’ara

You get to hike up the floating mountains and check out the glowing fauna in nature that surrounds you in Pandora.

You’re basically transported into the actual territory that the Na’vi people live. It’s super realistic and it’s absolutely gorgeous.

Exploring the exotic plants, the Na’vi-built drum circle, the Na’vi totems and other cultural items are all up for discovery in this valley.

Even when going up higher and higher all you see is beauty in the trees and vegetation.

You don’t see any other parts of Animal Kingdom and that’s why I felt like I was no longer in the park anymore.

Pandora The World of Avatar Food

Next up we have the food which is just as spectacular as the land in Animal Kingdom.

Satu’li Canteen

The food available at Satu’li Canteen is more health-conscious and more sustainable friendly. Although it is health-conscious, it is undeniably delicious.

I was a little hesitant when I first got there, but I did dive in and try the different items on the menu. I tried the steamed buns, the build your own bowl, and the dessert.

Cheeseburger Steamed Pods – Bao Buns

The cheddar taste wasn’t overpowering, but the winner of the show was the actual bun!

The bun is definitely what you would expect from a traditional steamed bun . Plus, the texture was fluffy, soft, and moist.

I could’ve just ate the bun alone, because it was absolutely remarkable. It came with coleslaw and what seem to be homemade chips, topped off with boba balls.

Chopped Wood-Grilled Chicken Bowl

I was happy to try this smoky chicken goodness. The bowl included chicken thighs marinated with garlic and olive oil topped with crunchy vegetable, vinaigrette, and chimichurri sauce.

It was placed on a bed of kale and romaine mix.

Blueberry Cream Cheese Mousse

The dessert was all the rave and I’m pretty sure there have been pictures circulating around the Internet of this blueberry mousse.

It was delicious and the blueberry taste wasn’t so overpowering, which was my main concern.

Blueberry cream cheese mousse had a passion fruit curd  on top that provided a superb balance and texture.

Chocolate Cake

The Chocolate Cake with a Crunchy Cookie Layer and Banana Cream Topping was my favorite.

However, at first it was hard for me to eat because the chocolate was so rich.

It would’ve been better if it was cut with some type of dairy product like ice cream or whipped cream. As the cake sat longer it got softer.

I then combine the banana cream topping with the crunchy cookie layer. Each bite got sweeter, better, and deliciously more intense.

Dreamwalker Sangria

The signature drink during lunch and dinner is the Dreamwalker Sangria. It is a mixture of refreshing White Sangria with a hint of Blue Curaçao

There were mixed reviews of the drink among the company I was around.

The main concern is if you’re more of a sweet wine drinker then you may not be such a fan.

If you are a wine person and it doesn’t matter if it’s dry or sweet, then you’ll enjoy the sangria. Get the full Satu’li Canteen menu here.

Pongu Pongu

The Pongu Pongu is a most-do spot in Pandora. Be sure to try both the drinks Night Blossom (non-alcoholic) and the Mo’ara Margarita.

The Pongu Lumpia snack, a delicious pineapple pastry, is also a winner.

Pongu Pongu Menu

  • Marshall’s Favorite Stuffed Pancake Sandwich with Sausage, Guava Jelly, Egg, and Cheese (Breakfast only)
  • Cinnamon Roll (Breakfast only)
  • Pongu Lumpia  with Pineapple-Cream Cheese Spring Roll
  • Na’vi-sized Pretzel with Beer Cheese Sauce

Non-Alcoholic Drinks

  • Night Blossom – Non-Alcoholic Specialty Beverage. Mixture of Limeade with Apple and Desert Pear flavors topped with Passion Fruit Boba Balls.

Alcoholic Beverages

  • Mo’ara Margarita  – Sauza Conmemorativo Añejo Tequila with Strawberry and Blood Orange flavors topped with Strawberry Boba Balls.
  • Hawkes’ Grog Ale
  • Mo’ara High Country Ale
  • Rum Blossom – Bacardi Superior Rum with layers of Apple and Desert Pear Limeade topped with Passion Fruit Boba Balls and a Glowing Unadelta Seed

Pandora World of Avatar Merchandise

Now let’s go through the merchandise options that you can expect to see on your visit.

Windertraders

For shopping, you will have another attraction called Windtraders.

This is an amazing store that has some of the coolest gadgets, gizmos, and toys produced for the Avatar franchise. You can bond with your own banshee.

Kind of like being chosen for a wand with Ollivander over at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Your mountain banshee has to form a bond with you and that’s the one you pick. They are pricey.

You can create your own miniature Avatar doll by putting your face into a digital scanner.

Let’s not forget about the Na’vi-inspired accessories such as ears and tails. Many of the visitors were walking around, including me, in the Na’vi attire.

Windtraders is overall a great store and is fun to just sit in there and browse.

Just don’t get caught in a rainstorm like my friend Lauren of Outdoorsy Diva , or you will walk out with more than you intended to buy.

How to Maximize Your Day in Pandora World

  • Map out the area so that you have an idea of where everything is. Check out at the map below.
  • Get your Avatar Flight of Passage Lightning Lane as soon as possible!
  • Plan to arrive to Animal Kingdom early, especially if you are able to take advantage of the Extra Magic Hours at Disney.
  • You will want to possibly come much later in evening when the crowds have died down. This gives you a chance to really explore everything Pandora has to offer.
  • Schedule your dining either before the lunch rush or afterwards. This tip increases your chances of a shorter wait time and an opportunity to get a prime seat

Pros and Cons of Pandora at Disney

Before I end this guide, I want to give you a few pros and cons to remember for your trip.

  • All immersive world. I think that anyone who appreciated the Avatar movie will enjoy this park, even if all the details are not understood.
  • Wonderful storytelling. I also like how Disney incorporated their signature storytelling from the gates of Pandora and throughout the land. You even receive a Pandora Field Guide to help you understand the Na’vi culture and language, along with Pandora animals and plants.
  • Great layout. For the space they have, 12-acres, it didn’t feel like it was super humongous. The Pandoran landscape made it feel intimate, but with a lot of space for guests to walk through without any clutter.
  • Good dining options. I enjoyed the cuisine more than I thought I would. I had no intentions of eating in Pandora that’s why I started out with the steamed buns. However, as everyone around kept raving about the food, I began to try many of the different dishes. It’s not your standard theme park food by a long mile.
  • Massive queue: Flight of Avatar is going to be a long line to walk in distance. It’s probably done for the large numbers that will be coming in and out of the attraction. When there’s not a long line you’ll have to walk very far just to get to the boarding portion of the line.
  • Lack of shaded seating. It would have been nice to have a little bit more shaded seating. I went on a day with a nice overcast, so I was lucky. I can see in the peak summer months that this could be a problem if you’re trying to find a place to escape the Florida heat.
  • Too many boba balls. It was on almost every dish I had. The frozen drinks, the steamed buns, and the chicken bowl. I like them, but not with my chicken.

My Final Thoughts on Avatar Land

The food, the attractions, the drinks, the shopping, and the overall ambiance is spectacular! This is a Disney must do or for any trip to Orlando.

Pandora-The World of Avatar will exceed your expectations. I had the best day ever during my trip at Animal Kingdom. It’s my hope that you get the same experience.

Just be sure to use the previous mentioned tips to maximize your day.

Until next time, Happy Park Hopping Hipsters!
