Rishyap also pronounced as Rishop is a magnificent Lepcha hamlet nestled in the Kalimpong Hills. At an elevation of 8100 feet above sea level, the village is quite adjacent to Lava and just about 28 km distance away from the heart of Kalimpong town. The mysterious quiet forest of Pine, Birch, Fir, and Orchids with soothing path following the chirps of birds and the splendid view of the majestic Kanchenjunga has captivated the minds of many travelers visiting Rishop to spend a great holiday amidst the lap of Mother Nature.

Apart from the great panorama of Kanchenjunga, a visitor can also see the Sikkim, Bhutan, and Nepal mountains including Jelep la from Rishyap. Nathula, the famous Into-Chinese border that has been opened up for trade, is also visible from here. From the year 1998, Rishop successfully emerged as one of the finest tourist destinations in the region which was just an inaccessible hamlet with very few households before. According to the local myths and ancient legends, the Ri in the name Rishop stands for mountain peak whereas shop means age-old trees in Tibetan.

From the airport, visitors can get a cab or catch a state transport bus till Lava. From Lave, it will be just a few minutes' drives to reach the village.
  • By Rail: Nearest Railway Station is New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP) at a distance of around 108km. Cars can be hired from outside the railway station.

Best Time to Visit Rishyap Village

The best time to visit Rishyap is during the months of mid-April to Mid-July. These are the summer months here in Rishyap when the temperature ranges from 10° Celsius to 20° Celsius. Because of this kind of temperature, the weather stays soothing, the sky remains mostly clear and the rhododendrons are in full bloom.

However, due to its high elevation, winter is quite chilling here when the temperature ranges from 0°C to 7°C. The months of autumn (October to November) is another great time to have a Rishyap Tour. Just like summer, the splendid view of the entire Himalayan range including Kanchenjunga can also be enjoyed during this season of autumn. On the contrary, having a Rishyap Tour during the months of Monsoon (July to August) is not recommended because of the frequent landslides.

rishop tourist spot

Rishop is a tourist village in the Lava - Lolegaon Circuit in Kalimpong sub-division. This used to be an inaccessible village with few households and step farming dependent on monsoon rain till tourists discovered this hidden treasure of Eastern Himalaya. The main attraction of Rishop is the serene environment and great views of snow capped Himalayan mountain range from here. The surrounding destinations of Lava, Lolegaon, Pedong, Rishi, Aritar are all within close distance and can be visited as part of a day sightseeing tour. During the initial days, one had to trek about 5 km from Lava to reach here. Today you can drive to Rishop (9 km) through a motorable road from Lava. The village is full of small resorts. Rimbik town itself does not have too many tourist attractions to offer. There are two trek routes which connect Rimbik with Sandakphu. One is a direct forest trail coming from Bikebhanjan to Rimbik. The other trek route reaches Rimbik via Gurdung and Srikhola. The second trek route although longer, is preferred by most trekkers. From Rimbik an uneven road takes you to Srikhola (about 7 km) from where you can start your trek. Gurdung is just 3 km trek from Srikhola towards Sandakphu. Some tourists prefer to trek only till Gurdung thus combining thrill of the Sandakphu trek without getting out of the Leisure tour mode altogether. Between Srikhola and Gurdung lies the small village of Timbure where tourist accommodation is also available. Srikhola and Gurdung offers basic tourist accommodations, Rimbik also has a number of basic tourist accommodations.-->

Rishop Travel Guide

Rishop   or   Rishyap is located at a distance of 32 km from Kalimpong at an altitude 5591 feet above the sea level. The Himalayan hamlet is definitely one of the most stunning creations of nature and still untouched.  A splendid sight of Himalayas is visible from Rishop. One can get a view of the Tin Simana, Gangtok, Nathula Pass and Kanchenjunga. It is a tranquil, small rural settlement of the Lepcha community in the mountainous landscape. During your Rishop tour, spend one night at this place to get a complete feel.

Rishop actually forms an integral part of the well-known Neora Valley at the foothills of Tiffin Dara. Although it’s a relatively new tourist destination compared to several others in the vicinity, it is still a virgin spot clothed in forests of pine, birch, fir, colorful rhododendrons and orchids with a wonderful view of the vast range of Kanchenjunga and many other Himalayan snow peaks. This is exactly what the name ‘Rishyap’ stands for – ‘Mountain Peaks and Forests’.

At night you will get amazing sights of the sparkling lights of Gangtok and the small town of Pedong. And that is all what you can expect to get there. You won’t get any city or town life. Which means no restaurants, drinks, food stores or shopping. It’s only the nature. The village is located close to Lava.

The undiluted charm of staying in a hill village among chirping birds and waking up with the view of the Majestic Kanchenjunga is the primary reason behind the popularity of Rishyap. Apart from that, a visitor can also see the Sikkim, Bhutan and Nepal mountains including Zelep la from Rishyap. Nathula, the famous Into-Chinese boarder that has been opened up for trade, is also visible from here.

Places to See During Rishop Tour

Tiffin dara.

Sinrise at Tiffen Dhara

Photo by Arindamphotos, CC BY -SA 4.0

Tiffin Dara  is a view point for watching sunrise & sunset and about 1.5 km of uphill trek from the base of Rishop. You walk through the forests of birch, fir, pine and rhododendrons as you hear the chirping of the birds. It’s a narrow forested trail and should be avoided during the monsoon.

There are few places along the way where bamboo made benches are provided where you can take rest before you start climbing again. Likely there will be some stray mountain dogs accompanying you and showing you the way. It takes about 40 to 45 minutes trek to the top. The top is like a flat rocky platform created as a view point. On a clear day your hard work will be rewarded with a panoramic view of all the Himalayan peaks. During sunset you can see the gold capped peaks with a play of rainbow colors. Try to carry trekking stick

Green mountains around Kolakham under a clear blue sky

Other than Rishop itself, another popular settlement in Neora Valley is the small sleepy village called  Kolakham which is about 20 km away from here. Near to that is the wonderful Changey waterfall which gushes down from high above. Vehicles can’t reach all the way up to the fall. You will need to walk down a narrow pathway for about 1.5 km to get to the waterfall. But once there, it’s a heavenly feel among nature and roaring sound of the spouting water

Pedong Play Ground

Photo by Vivek.moktan, CC BY -SA 4.0

Pedong is another small village that takes around 45 min to reach by car. Main attraction of Pedong is the nearby Damsang Fort. This fort was built in 1690 and is in ruins now. Damsang was once the site of war between the Lepcha and Bhutia. Importance of Pedong is that it is the gateway to Tibet from India through Zelep La Pass

Other Details

There is no city/town life here, just a small village with spectacular views of the third largest mountain peak of the world (Kanchenjunga) and its range. At night with limited artificial light, the hamlet looks heavenly in moonlight – almost every lodge will have an open courtyard where you can sit in open air and relax.
