Halting funds for the UN Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) will have "catastrophic consequences" for people in Gaza, warns the head of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Several countries - including the UK and the US - have paused funding after Israel alleged some UNRWA staff had a role in Hamas's 7 October attack.

Several staff have been sacked and an investigation is underway, but that hasn't stopped more than 10 countries suspending their support for the aid group.

"Decisions by various countries to pause funds for UNRWA, the largest supplier of humanitarian aid in this crisis, will have catastrophic consequences for the people of Gaza," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO director-general.

"No other entity has the capacity to deliver the scale and breadth of assistance that 2.2 million people in Gaza urgently need."

WHO faced "extreme challenges" in delivering medical supplies in the enclave, he added, though it did manage to deliver some supplies to the Nasser hospital on Monday, not including food or fuel.

Meanwhile, WHO workers on the ground are reporting increasing food shortages among patients and health workers, he said.

"The risk of famine is high and increasing each day, with persistent hostilities and restricted humanitarian access," he added.

As Hamas says it is studying a ceasefire proposal, a senior Israeli official has told our US partner network NBC News there are strong indications the deal will move ahead on their side.

However, the source also says the deal's terms - which came about following talks in Paris involving Israel, the US, Egypt and Qatar - have not been passed on to the full cabinet.

A senior Hamas official said the proposal involved a three-stage truce, during which remaining civilians would be released, then soldiers, and then finally the bodies of hostages killed.

It isn't clear how long each stage would last or what could come after the final phase.

It comes a day after Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, repeated his vow not to pull troops out of Gaza until "total victory", in an apparent public snub of the deal.

But Mr Netanyahu remains under pressure from the US to plan a way out of the war, while relatives of hostages worry negotiations are the only way to return them home.

Pictures taken today show smoke rising above north Gaza.

Israeli forces have continued to pound areas in northern and southern parts of the enclave, after Hamas said it is studying a new proposal for a ceasefire and release of hostages held in the territory.

Now to a development on the suspected dangerous object found outside the Israeli embassy in Stockholm this afternoon - see our 1.46pm post.

The object believed to be an explosive device has been destroyed by the national bomb squad, according to Swedish police.

A police spokesperson told broadcaster TV4 the device was detonated in a controlled manner.

Police still haven't given any detail around the nature of the object or how it could have got so close to the embassy. 

The embassy was cordoned off at a distance of about 100 metres.

Reports have claimed 30 bodies have been found buried and blindfolded in a school's playground in northern Gaza, with some accusing Israel of a mass "execution".

Today, the Palestinian foreign ministry has called for an international team to investigate the reports, referring to testimonies of Palestinians who say they found more than 30 decomposing bodies.

"They were killed while blindfolded and with their hands tied, as clear evidence that they were executed," the ministry claimed.

"The ministry believes that the discovery of this mass grave in this brutal form reflects the scale of the tragedy to which Palestinian civilians are exposed."

Sky News has not been able to verify the reports.

Israel is yet to comment on the claims.

A potentially dangerous object has been found near the Israeli embassy in Stockholm, according to police in Sweden.

The national bomb squad is investigating after embassy employees called police at 12.10pm UK time about an object outside the grounds they believed may be dangerous. 

Police haven't given any detail on the size or shape of the object.

Public broadcaster SVT said several police vehicles are on site and a large area has been cordoned off.

The Israeli embassy was not immediately available for comment.

Iranian officials have once again warned the country will respond to threats from the US.

It comes amid suggestions the US could target Iranian-run sites around the Middle East in retaliation to a drone strike it believes was conducted by an Iran-backed militia.

Tehran has already said it would respond to any threats - see our 6.23am post.

Now Tehran's Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami has added his voice to warnings against the US, according to semi-official Tasnim news agency.

"We hear threats coming from American officials, we tell them that they have already tested us and we now know one another, no threat will be left unanswered," he said.

State media also quoted Iran's foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, as telling a cabinet meeting the US "has to stop its threats" and "focus on a political solution".

Washington "has to accept the resistance as a fact", he added, referring to Iran's name for its alliance of armed groups across the Middle East.

As we reported earlier, Joe Biden has said he has decided on how the US will respond to the deadly drone attack on a military base in Jordan.

He didn't offer any further information, but our US partner network NBC News now reports that officials describe retaliatory strikes as a "campaign" that could last for weeks.

Among the expected targets are Iranian sites outside of Iran, with other locations across several countries also in US attack plans.

The campaign could include strikes and cyber operations.

Defence and security analyst Professor Michael Clarke told Sky News one option could be to target Iranian ships in the Red Sea and connecting waters. 

"The Americans might regard that as a sensible target since they're all part of the Iran's attempts to create a crisis for America," he added.

Almost 50 cities in the US have passed resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza - with at least 14 passing in vital swing states such as Michigan - placing more pressure on President Joe Biden.

About 70 have passed resolutions on the Israel-Hamas war, with most calling for a ceasefire, six calling more broadly for peace and at least 20 condemning Hamas's 7 October attack.

That's all according to analysis by Reuters, who report many of the ceasefire resolutions have been passed in Democrat-run states, but areas that could be decisive in this year's presidential election are also on the list.

Gabriela Santiago-Romero, a Detroit council member who voted to pass a ceasefire resolution in Michigan's biggest city in November, said it reflected frustration.

"We want leadership that is willing to listen to us," she said, adding frustration is particularly keen among younger officials and people of colour.

Asked for comment on the report, the White House, which has said it is pressing Israel to avoid civilian casualties, repeated a ceasefire would only benefit Hamas.

Israel has ordered that a border crossing with Egypt and a nearby road only be accessed by military personnel, after hostage families and others calling for the release of those held by Hamas continued to protest - holding up aid for Gaza. 

The Nitzana Border Crossing sees aid enter Israel from Egypt to be checked, before being sent back to Egypt to enter Gaza via the Rafah crossing.

But days of protests have slowed that process down, with some protesters denying trucks access. 

The order, issued last night but announced this morning, means it will be illegal for civilians to be in the area of the crossing, as well as the nearby Route 211.
