Horseback Riding

Vieques island private beach tour.

This tour was designed for people who want to experience the tropical island vibe of Vieques. The private tour ensures that you and your group can relax and enjoy the undisturbed beaches with only the company of your guide and your horses.  Your views from the saddle include a famous 400 year old ceiba tree, tropical fruit trees, a mile long pier, and shallow coastline with clear lulling waves. Instagram worthy photos included.

What to Expect

This is a private tour that will de adapted to your group to make sure you have the best experience possible. Are you more interested in local flora and fauna or do you want to learn about the paso fino horse's gait? Jurutungo guides like to get to know you and answer all of your questions about everything from your horse to island living. We ride along quiet dirt roads and beaches that are not reachable by vehicles. Your comfort is our priority so we suggest comfortable clothing like long pants or leggings so that the saddle and stirrups do not rub your skin.  Closed toed shoes are advised.  We offer a quiet relaxing morning tour and a sunset tour. Both offer dramatic views of marine life, native flowers and fruits, and neighboring islands.

First Time or Experienced Riders

Previous horseback riding experience is not necessary, but your experience level will set the speed of the tour. A lesson is included for those who need it at the start of the trip. Our horses are trained to remain at a walk until stimulated to pick up speed.  If you have previous experience or are feeling comfortable during your tour, we would love to show you the unique gaits of Puerto Rican Criollo horses.

Is it safe?

We want you to have a safe and relaxing time riding with us.  Helmets are mandatory.  The horses are selected and trained especially for giving tours to riders of all experience levels.  The best way that you can ensure your safety is to follow the guides instructions.  Anyone who fails to do so will be removed from the tour for the safety of the group.

Can I rent a horse?

We think of our horses as an extension of our family, and therefore we do not rent them out.  Luckily, our private tours are customized for your group's best possible experience.

What is the route of the tour?

Tours are led along the northern coast of Vieques, a small island of Puerto Rico. You meet your guide and your horse at a famous 400 year old Ceiba tree and then visit the surrounding beaches. The remote beaches make a stunning backdrop for photos.

I absolutely loved our experience riding around the island and the beach. Our guide was wonderful and made us feel safe. I would definitely do this again.

It is a ridiculous experience in Puerto Rico. My friend got a horse kick and experienced a bad bleeding and pain. We had to cancel the trip. It should last 2 hours. It was only about 40 minutes up to the accident. The owner didn't refund anything and refused to talk about any refund thing. They are so ridiculous and they can only see money in their eyes. As long as you sign the documents before riding, you have to be responsible for any accidents by yourself, even though we don't do anything wrong. The whole accident happened because the horse was not trained well. Think about it. Will you ride the wild horses without any guarantee? The owners don't care about your safety. They only care about the money.

We had an amazing private tour to the beach for our honeymoon. We had an amazing time because of the location, Abigail was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and the horses were so well trained! I would love to recommend this tour to anyone! Well worth every penny

Abigail was excellent guide. No need to bring phone, she captured every moment. Safe riding for beginners.

The highlight of our trip to Vieques! Such fun to ride through the surf. I'm glad our tour leader, Johnny, convinced me to ride barefoot. ( if you prefer not to ride barefoot, bring flip flops or water shoes.) the horses were very well trained and don't get spooked by dogs or cars.

We made a reservation. No one showed up. Waited around and nothing. Called and she said we had no reservation after we had a text confirmation. She said we should have received an email when no email was asked for. A total waste of our final day here. Very disappointing.

First off, with such well-trained horses, and an awesome owner/tour guide, no experience necessary actually means YOU WILL STILL HAVE A LOT OF FUN! So glad my wife and I tried this out while we were in Vieques. My first concern initially was, "how much fun can horse back riding actually be?" Boy was I wrong, and with the breath-taking views of the ocean as you ride alongside the beach and in the water, how can this experience be anything far from amazing! I highly recommend anyone to try it, whether you've done it in the past or not, with the Colon family, the adventure becomes all the more enjoyable! Pro tip: become really cool with the owner, if he feels that he can trust you, and that you can be responsible with the horse, he'll show you how you can get them to go faster, and that'll make your time spent more exhilarating! My horse was named Miel, which means Honey in Spanish. She was sweet, well tamed, and an absolute joy to ride. The owner takes excellent care of the horses, and doesn't over work them. Support local! They need our help. He and his family have an amazing story. Don't go anywhere else for horseback riding, go to Colon!

We had an amazing time with Johnnie and his great horses! The highlight was riding them into the waves and feeling like a parade with all of the horses and dogs as we made our way through the streets. So much fun!! This is a can't miss VQS activity! Johnnies wife was so sweet in getting my daughter and I set up- a true family affair! Go see them!!

My son, hubby and I went on 2 hour trip today and it was Fabulous. We rode beautiful horses on the beautiful Vieques beaches, country side and local streets. The Colon family was professional soo beyond helpful and sweet. They were very careful with my 6 year old son as well who was also a 1st time rider. The experience was beyond our wildest dreams and we all loved it!!! Please contact him if you'd like to ride a horse and you will definitely be amazed. Posting plenty of pictures for your viewing pleasure ;)

Horseback riding in Puerto Rico - featured image

Recently horseback riding has become one of the most popular activities in Puerto Rico and for good reason.

It is an excellent way to explore the beautiful countryside, beaches and rainforests of the island.

One of the best places to go horseback riding is in Luquillo which sits at the foothills of El Yunque National Forest.

This horseback riding tour is one of the best as you’ll get to ride through the Puerto Rican countryside, the rainforest and finish up at Luquillo Beach.

In the rest of this post, I’ll cover all of the places where you can go horseback riding in Puerto Rico including San Juan, Isabela, Vieques and more.

Table of Contents

Best Places for Horseback Riding in Puerto Rico

Overview of the types of horse riding tours available in Puerto Rico.

If you’re looking for a unique way to explore the beautiful landscapes of Puerto Rico then horseback riding is the perfect activity for you.

There are several places in Puerto Rico where you can go horseback riding whilst taking in the stunning views of the island, but only some are worth doing.

Here’s a quick overview of the options & the best tours:

  • Luquillo (Top Pick 🏅) : ride through the rainforest & along the beach (50 mins from San Juan) – check prices for tour
  • San Juan: ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to travel far (no beach riding) – check prices for tour

1. Horseback Riding in Luquillo

My personal favorite place to go horse riding in Puerto Rico is in Luquillo which is a town located on Puerto Rico’s northeastern coast.

It’s known for it’s tropical rainforest and super pristine beaches. The best part is that it’s just 50 minutes from San Juan.

It’s one of the best places to go if you want to do a horseback ride along the beach in Puerto Rico.

The best tour on offer is this horseback riding tour offered by Tropical Trail Rides.

During the tour, you’ll ride along the shore on a series of secluded beaches and then venture off into the tropical rainforest.

  • 2-hour guided tour
  • Suitable for all levels of riders including beginners
  • Includes an optional hike to a viewpoint

This tour would be perfect for anyone that wants to ride along the beach and in the water.

The island is known for its pristine beaches, crystal clear waters and incredible wildlife so is well worth a visit if you have time to spare.

But what sets Vieques apart from other tropical destinations is its population of wild horses that roam freely around the island.

You can also join horseback riding tours in Vieques which allow you to explore the island’s stunning landscapes, lush forests and pristine beaches.

Sailh’s Paradise offers a range of different horse riding experiences including beach rides, sunset rides and even private experiences.

Here’s what it’s like to go horseback riding in Vieques:

It’s easy enough to do a day trip to Vieques but remember that it isn’t on the mainland so you’ll need to take a boat over there from Fajardo.

Beach Horseback Riding in Puerto Rico

It is difficult to capture this experience with a camera as you need special long exposure settings. Even with the right settings the images captured don’t do it justice.

Every stroke of your paddle will cause single-celled plankton called dinoflagellates to emit blue light.

Many tours utilize glass-bottom kayaks to enhance the experience.

A guided tour of The Sugar Mill Ruins is a sweet treat for history lovers.

Passionate and knowledgeable guides point out clues to spark your imagination taking you back through the culture and history of this 19th-century sugar mill now covered in green foliage.

Vieques had a strong sugar cane economy prior to the 1940s. It is not easy to find this landmark as there are no well-defined roads or trails and the markers are hard to notice.

The Sugar Mill Ruins tour is a true hands-on history lesson.

Learn more about the Sugar Mill Ruins in the following video:

Get more information about this tour by contacting the Vieques Historical Trust .

10. Abandoned military bunkers

Camouflaged to appear like rolling hills, the now abandoned area is where the military stored their ammunition during their 60-year operation in Vieques.

Located about 4 miles past Mosquito Pier along Route 200, there is an unmarked road that can prove difficult to find. This is where the bunkers are, and it is located in the same wooded area as the Sugar Mill Ruins.

horse tours vieques

Following the Peace for Vieques protests in 2003, the military shut down its bases on the island and left behind many artifacts.

Visitors can explore open abandoned bunkers, and perhaps stumble upon the illusive Bunker 412.

At Bunker 412, you can see a collaborative art installation entitled “Reclaiming Vieques: Memory and Imagination.”

Photos taken in the 1940’s cover the doors of the bunker and depict Viequenses being evicted from their homes.

vieques bunker inside

Years after the military left, the bunkers were transformed into a disco that played salsa and bachata, attracting visitors to dance in the middle of nowhere.

This club is no longer in existence but is an interesting part of the area’s history.

Below is a video showing the bunkers:

For more information about touring, visit the Vieques Historical Trust on the boardwalk in Esperanza.

11. Food tour

There is no shortage of yummy things to eat on Vieques .

Esperanza has plenty of creative food trucks and eateries to try. The Malecón is perfect for enjoying lunch by the sea.

image of Puerto Rican dishes

A 3-hour food tour may very well fill your belly with 4-7 culinary stops along the way.

A food tour can create an opportunity to indulge in a variety of Puerto Rican food guided by a local, like mofongo, tostones, empanadas, and arepas.

Try Bili, the official drink of Vieques, made with quenepas and rum. The drink is traditionally buried underground until it is ready to drink.

Nourish yourself with the catch of the day like whole lobster and scallops, conch, or yellow tail just to name a few.

To book this tour, visit Vieques Concierge .

12. Crab Island Distillery tour

Vieques has its own distillery called Crab Island Rum Distillery.

Crab Island is the first and only handcrafted distillery in Vieques .

With knowledgeable staff, you can learn about the distilling process, taste different rums like coffee or orange infusions, and even purchase rum to take home as a souvenir.

This enormous tree is said to be over 500 years old.

In the religion of the Indigenous people of Puerto Rico (Taino), the Ceiba tree is the daughter of the Goddess YaYa.

Tours visiting the Ceiba Tree are generally part of a package that includes other historical landmarks in Vieques like the fort in Isabela II and the island’s lighthouses.

When it rains, water pools in around the various limbs and roots to quench the thirst of various local creatures like tiny crabs and Paso Fino horses roaming about.

This iconic tree is a meeting place for various tours on the island.
