Step aboard 230-foot sailing superyacht Sybaris, owned by William Duker

The same owner as the newly listed $65M Apogee penthouse

A goliath sailing veseel out at sea

The reason William Duker just listed his Apogee penthouse (for $65 million) in Miami Beach is to travel around the world on his marvelous sailing superyacht.

Meet the 230-foot Sybaris, which is currently docked near the Miami Beach Marina off Terminal Isle. Launched in May, it is one of the largest sailing yachts on earth, and came to life after Duker beat cancer, per Boat International .

He set out to build a statement vessel.

“The boat kept growing in order to bring the lines down and make it look as sleek as it does. We thought it’d be a 56 metre, but then I started thinking that it had to be special, it had to be different. And there are already 10 or 11 or so 56 metres; I didn’t want hull number 12. I wanted something people could see from half a mile away and say, ‘Hey, there’s Sybaris ’,” Duker says.

Check out Duker’s favorite features.

Stepping On Board Italy’s Largest Sailing Yacht Sybaris

By Ben Roberts

The launch of a new yacht often signifies the realisation of a dream. For Bill Duker, that dream is 20 years in the making. From the days of sitting with his son drawing their dream yacht, to working with the finest designers and builders to make it happen. This is Sybaris, one man’s dream turned Italy’s largest sailing yacht.

Shortly after her technical launch and mast stepping operations, we arrived at the Perini Navi Group ’s Picchiotti shipyard in La Spezia to step on board the 70 metre ketch during her official launch ceremony.

This is Perini Navi’s most advanced project since the creation of the Maltese Falcon, which was launched at Perini Navi's Turkish facilities in 2006 and still stands as their largest yacht to date.

The subtle nature of Sybaris , even with her imposing 72 and 61 metre main and mizzen masts, is astounding. The performance under sail has the makings of a cutting-edge classic, and the resounding core of her creation is to house art, while becoming a masterpiece herself.

“We wanted to build a boat that combined great art in the interior, put it in a setting that the interior of the boat itself was a piece of art, and then set that interior within a superyacht that was also a masterpiece. Not only a masterpiece of beauty, but a masterpiece of performance.” Explains Sybaris Owner Bill Duker during the ceremony.

Style & Performance Drawn by the Perini Navi Technical Design studio, with considerable input from Bill Duker's team, Sybaris is sleek, sculpted and a notable evolution of the Perini Navi style with a less pronounced sheer line and more vertical bow.

Philippe Briand’s extensive experience was injected to optimise the naval architecture and make the most of the incredible 5,842m2 sail plan. This pedigree combination of designer, builder and architect has created a comfortable and stylish vessel which brings sailing back to the hands of the owner through cutting-edge technology..

A first for Perini Navi, Sybaris is equipped with two variable speed generators that supply power to the ship’s main grid, and stores excess energy in battery packs. This technology makes Sybaris a silent runner, allowing those on board to navigate and use battery power for hours without the smells and sounds of the diesel generator.

“As Perini Navi’s second largest sailing yacht launch to date, Sybaris raised numerous technical and aesthetic challenges, ” says Burak Akgül, Managing Director of Sales, Marketing & Design. “But where there’s a will there’s a way, and the result is a uniquely beautiful sailing yacht that pushes the boundaries of design in every conceivable way.”

Life Under Sail On deck, Sybaris provides an unprecedented amount of space. Her giant fly bridge measures up to 117m2 and reflects the truly sophisticated lifestyle inside and out. The exterior spaces lead seamlessly into the interiors, with PH Designs imbuing the yacht with an effortlessly cool demeanour in what is the studio’s first ever yacht project.

Titanium is a running feature throughout the yacht, formed by specialist craftsmen - brought in from the world of F1 - to create everything from exterior railings, leading into the striking interior ceilings and fixtures found across Sybaris.

The interior itself, matches the style and demeanour of Sybaris perfectly. The open plan-layout provides unbroken space which is filled with custom-designed furniture, storage and decorations which provide a clean, modern style that acts as a muted backdrop to the bold works of art from the owners private collection, set to be installed in the coming weeks.

Instead of built-in credenzas, for example, the 151m2 main salon features sculpted pillars milled from solid titanium to support ‘floating’ travel trunks clad with alligator skin. “The effect is modern with a remote reminiscence of Old World travel,” says founder of PH Design, Peter Hawrylewicz. “The allure lies in the confluence of these two temperaments.”

A dramatic sculptural feature is the central staircase leading down to the lower deck and up to the fly bridge. Made of titanium with glass balustrades and treads of bleached American oak, the Class-approved laminated glass panels alone weigh over 600 kg each, requiring reinforced beams fore and aft of the stairwell to support the structure.

To blur the boundary between the inside and outside environments, the titanium ceilings panels in the main salon continue through the glass sliding doors into the aft cockpit and softly bounce the illumination from the LED lighting recessed within.

The same reasoning has been applied to the flooring, where the extra-wide planks of teak in the cockpit are mirrored in the oak floorboards of the main salon. This is just one area which perfects the theme of the minimalist materials used, principally titanium, bleached oak and Bianco Assoluto marble with hints of bronze in the custom-built furnishings.

This is a yacht built for the pursuit of pleasure, with each design and construction party working under the vision of Bill Duker, who commented: “It’s been for me more than a creation of a high performance yacht, more than the creation of a beautiful piece of art, it’s been the thing that’s bound me and my son.”

We look forward to bringing you more on the interior of Sybaris in a dedicated interview with her designers, more about the journey of Sybaris’ creation and a closer look on board during her debut at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show in September.

Best of the Best: Q & A With PH Design Founder Peter Hawrylewicz

Peter Hawrylewicz

The founder of PH Design talks with Robb Report contributor Michael Verdon about the interior of ‘Sybaris,’ his first yacht project.

How did Bill Duker, the owner of ‘Sybaris,’ find you? Bill has been a client for 25 years. He first hired me to design his home on Miami Beach when I was working on Gianni Versace’s home. We have developed a great relationship since then.

This was your first yacht project? Yes, and I did not want to blow it, partly because of my friendship with Bill. Also, there are only so many yacht commissions in the world, so it is a scarce pearl to squander. Bill told me that if I can think it, they will build it. In other words, he was granting me the artistic freedom to exceed my expectations and to meet his.

What was the initial concept? He wanted a state-of-the-art yacht with an interior to show his modern-art collection to its greatest advantage. I wanted the interior to be modern, warm, and personal, depleted of clutter and embellishments, yet rich in detail. Bill inspires people naturally. I wanted his boat to do the same.

Perini Navi Sybaris

How did you choose titanium as a base material? We used it throughout the boat, in the ceilings, furniture, hardware, and railings. I like the titanium ceilings. They provide a muted reflective surface for the interior volumes that I find compelling. Almost all of the furniture on board was designed by me for ‘Sybaris.’ Many pieces have components cast in bronze or titanium. There are challenges with titanium. The material is strong and resilient but can be difficult to work with.

Were you happy with the results? Whether the titanium was welded, cut, cast, or folded, Genesis Yachtline and Perini Navi supervised the work excellently. They were successful at every turn.

Your favorite feature? The large cockpit table on the aft deck. It is made of concentric titanium rings and is mimicked in a tempered reflection in the titanium ceiling above. The design is based on an unfurling rose, a meaningful emblem for the Duker family.

Bodies of two children recovered after sailboat capsizes, search continues for missing man

by Emily Matesic, FOX 11 News

{ }Missing man and kids in Door Co. Last seen Saturday, July 13, 2024 (Brown Co. Emergency Management)

UPDATE: The children's names have been released .

FISH CREEK (WLUK) -- The bodies of two young children were found after their sailboat was found capsized in the waters of Door County.

"My heart is in my stomach. As a boater, we've been boating 50 years and to see a boat pull in and not know where the captain or two small children are, that's a boater's worst nightmare," said Kathy Hinkfuss of Green Bay, a recreational boater.

A search began over the weekend for the two children, ages 3 and 5, and their father, 32-year-old Bill Salnik of Little Suamico, after they went sailing Saturday.

Officials say the three left Oconto Harbor after 10 a.m.

Around noon Sunday, the Oconto County Sheriff's Office received a report of an overdue boat and began a search with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Wisconsin DNR.

"The Oconto County Sheriff's Office began a search along with the USCG and the WI DNR. The search expanded last night into the jurisdictional waters of Door County. Emergency personnel from the DCSO, DC emergency services and local fire departments joined the search," said Chief Deputy Patrick McCarty with the Door County Sheriff's Office.

The family's intended route was to go from Green Island in the bay to a marina just south of Oconto but they never made it to their destination.

Salnik's truck and trailer was still at the boat ramp and his phone calls went straight to voicemail.

At 6:22 a.m. Monday, the capsized sailboat was found just south of Chambers Island, without Salnik and his children. The vessel was was towed to Fish Creek.

After 11 a.m. Monday, searchers found the bodies of the two young children about a mile south of where the sailboat was found. "The bodies of two young children were recovered in the water about one mile south of where the boat was located. Their names are not being released at this time pending positive identification and notification of next of kin," added McCarty.

The Door County Sheriff's Office says they will continue their land and sea search efforts to find Salnik.

Due to warmer water and air temperatures, officials say it is still possible to find Salnik alive.

Officials are asking those out on the water to keep an eye out for anything that may be related to the search for Salnik.

Bodies of Children, 3 and 5 Years Old, Recovered, Dad Still Missing After Sailboat Capsizes in Wisconsin

The children's bodies were found more than 48 hours after their boat set sail

The bodies of a 5-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son were recovered on Monday, July 15, following a search and rescue mission for a missing sailboat near Chambers Island, Wis., according to the Door County Sheriff’s Office . The search for their father continues.

Bill Salnick, 32, and his children, 5 and 3, went missing around 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. Although police withheld the names of the children in their initial statement, they were identified as Charlotte and Josh by a GoFundMe created by Salnick's mother, Tina.

The 18-foot Gulf Coast sailboat, My Lady Blue, they were sailing in was found around 6:20 a.m., just south of Chambers Island in Gibraltar, Wis., the sheriff's office said. The children's bodies were discovered at around 11:20 a.m., "one mile south of where the boat had been found."

Oconto County Sheriff's Offic

The family left the Oconto boat launch on My Lady Blue around 10 a.m. Saturday. The search for Salnick and his children began after the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office was notified that an overdue boater had left the Oconto Harbor, per the OCSO’s Facebook statement . Oconto County is west of Door County and across from Green Bay.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG), Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, City of Oconto Police Department, Oconto County Emergency Management, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office and Dispatch Center and Oconto Fire & Rescue assisted with OCSO’s search.

Beginning Sunday, the USCG searched the Bay of Green Bay and expanded into Door County's jurisdictional waters. The Door County Sheriff’s Office, Door County Emergency Services and Town of Gibraltar Fire Department then joined the search.

The search for Salnick will continue on land, water and air on Tuesday morning.

Search continues for father after rescuers find sailboat overturned

The bodies of two children were recovered.

DOOR COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) - Rescuers are continuing the search for a missing boater off Door County Tuesday morning. They were still searching as of Tuesday afternoon.

Monday they found the bodies of two young children and the sailboat they were on, capsized, in the Bay of Green Bay.

On Tuesday, authorities confirmed the children were wearing life jackets.

As we reported, Bill Salnik, 32, and his children went sailing from Oconto on Saturday. It’s believed they were headed to Riley’s Bay before storms hit.

A search began Sunday afternoon after they failed to appear at their destination, phone calls went straight to voicemail, and their truck and boat trailer were found at a boat landing.

Their sailboat was found capsized south of Chambers Island after daybreak Monday. The children were located about 5 hours later.

Agencies are searching by air, land, and of course water, in hopes of finding Salnik.

“Statistically from what I’m told, with the water temperature your survivability is up to 121 hours and we’re still within that window, so I mean we’re not giving up hope until absolutely and it’s necessary,” said Chief Deputy Patrick McCarty of the Door County Sheriff’s Office.

McCarty says crews are planning to search through the week.

“These are our busiest times of the year, so there are a lot of people out enjoying the recreational waters of Door County, so if someone does see something, please call. We want to follow up on any lead,” McCarty said.

Meanwhile, authorities are waiting for positive identification of the children’s bodies.

Authorities say they are paying close attention to the weather for this search, and say it dictates when they go out on the water.

Owner Bill Duker said his crew were forced to “run for their lives” when a fire engulfed Danneskjold  and 30m Ocean Alexander 100 superyacht  Drinkability at the Hinckley Yachts yard in Portsmouth.

“They are very shaken – it all happened very fast,” he said, adding that at least one person was injured in the incident.

Both boats have been declared a total loss.

It is understood that the fire, which began on the morning of Friday, December 10, originated on Drinkability , which was in a travel lift while shipyard staff worked on the bottom of the boat. Danneskjold , which was at the yard undergoing maintenance work, was positioned alongside Drinkability .

While there has not yet been an official announcement about the cause of the fire, fingers have been pointed at the proximity of propane heaters to some hay bales, which were nearby Drinkability .

Duker said he was informed about the fire by a member of crew. “I got a call saying, ‘the boat’s gone. It’s consumed by fire – it’s a total loss.’”

He added that his first concern was for his crew. “For us, it’s a financial issue but for them, it’s their home and their jobs and all the plans they had made,” he said. “We’ve assured them that we’ll make sure they’re ok.”

Duker, who only bought Danneskjold at the end of October , added that he hadn’t even had the chance to step on board. “I never spent a night on the boat.”

Search continues for missing boater; 2 children who had been on sailboat with him identified

Editor's note: This story has been updated with the identification of the victims.

STURGEON BAY - The two children whose bodies were recovered from the waters of Green Bay were identified by the Door County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday.

The sheriff's office confirmed that the children are Joshua Salnik, 3, and Charlotte Salnik, 5. They had been on a sailboat Saturday with their father, Billy Salnik, 32, of Little Suamico, who still remains missing.

According to the sheriff's office:

  • The children's bodies were recovered on Monday south of Chambers Island in the town of Gibraltar.
  • The siblings were found together and they were both wearing flotation devices.
  • The autopsies were done on Tuesday by the Brown County Medical Examiner's Office.
  • The search continues for the father. The sheriff's office said it is conducting drone searches over the bay today and the search will continue on Thursday.
  • The incident remains under investigation.

GoFundMe started for Salniks

Tina Salnik, the mother of Bill, created a GoFundMe on Monday, raising money for Bill and his children's funerals. The fundraiser had raised over $15,000, as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, to help pay for the funerals.

In the description of the GoFundMe created by Tina Salnik suggests a storm that evening was the cause of the disappearance. "They took the sailboat out and were caught in a storm, they did not survive," Salnik said.

Timeline of events

According to reports between the Door County Sheriff's Department, Oconto County Sheriff's Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard, this was the timeline of events leading up to discovering the children's bodies.

  • Salnik and his two children departed Green Island, in the bay, around 4 p.m. July 13 in an 18-foot sailboat.
  • The three were reported missing at 12:42 p.m. Sunday when they didn't arrive at their planned destination in Oconto. The Coast Guard was notified at 4:27 p.m. Sunday.
  • The father's truck and trailer were found at the boat ramp on Sunday afternoon. Calls to the Salnik's phone went straight to voicemail.
  • A capsized vessel was retrieved at 6:22 a.m. Monday south of Chambers Island and was towed to Fish Creek.
  • At 11:21 a.m. Monday, the bodies of two young children were found from the water about 1 mile south of where the boat had been located.

McCarty confirmed that the Door County Sheriff's Department found the bodies and the boat, while the initial missing persons report and overdue boater complaint was handled by the Oconto County Sheriff's Department.

National News | Children’s bodies found after sailboat capsizes in Green Bay, search for father continues

Bill Salnick, left, and the children went missing Saturday afternoon, the police said. (Brown County Emergency Management)

The children were found Monday near Gibraltar , according to the Door County Sheriff’s Office.

Bill Salnick, 32, and the children went missing Saturday afternoon after sailing from Oconto on the west side of Green Bay, police said. The 18-foot vessel was found Monday morning around 6:20 a.m. just south of Chambers Island.

The children were found about five hours later “one mile south of where the boat had been found.” Authorities on Tuesday confirmed the children were wearing life jackets, according to ABC affiliate WBAY.

The family is believed to have been headed to Rileys Bay before storms hit late Saturday afternoon. However, it remains unclear how the boat overturned. The search began Sunday after they never arrived at their destination.

The  United States Coast Guard , Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and a number of local agencies participated in the search, which began in Oconto County  before expanding into Door County.

Land, water and air searches are planned to continue throughout the week.

“The water temperature in Kewaunee County was 72 degrees on the surface so, I mean, the water is relatively warm and we do have warm weather right now, so we’re still in that time frame where somebody still could be located alive in the water,” Door County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Patrick McCarty said Monday afternoon.

The deputy has asked anyone who sees anything out on the water to contact the authorities.

Family still missing after sailboat found

UPDATE: 2 unresponsive in Lake Michigan after capsized sailboat found, search continues

A father and his two young children are still missing after their capsized sailboat was recovered from Lake Michigan on Monday morning, according to the U.S. Coast Guard .

Bill Salnik, 32, of Little Suamico, Wis., and his children, ages 3 and 5, were last heard from around 4 p.m. Saturday when they departed from Green Island in Lake Michigan’s Green Bay, officials said . They were expected to travel to a marina near Oconto, Wis., but never made it, police said . Calls to Salnik’s phone went to straight to voicemail. His truck and trailer were found at the boat launch.

Officials were notified of the missing vessel just before 5 p.m. Sunday. After an overnight search by air and on the water, their 18-foot Gulf Coast Sailboat was found capsized at 6:22 a.m. today just south of Chambers Island, according to USCG Station Sturgeon Bay . It was towed to shore.

In a live video posted by FOX 11 , the vessel appeared to be missing its mast and topsail.

There were storms on Green Bay both Saturday and Sunday nights.

Divers searched under the vessel for the missing family, but they were not found, according to the USCG news release.

A Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat-Medium from Sturgeon Bay and an MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter from USCG Air Station Traverse City are part of today’s search effort. A Coast Guard Auxiliary flight is also scheduled to search today.

The search effort has included the USCG, Oconto County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, City of Oconto Police Department, Oconto County Emergency Management, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office and Dispatch Center, Oconto Fire & Rescue, Brown County departments, and others, officials said.

‘Absolutely incredible’: Man rowing solo across Atlantic is surrounded by whales

Tom Waddington is on a quest to row across the Atlantic Ocean all by himself — but on Sunday, he found plenty of company at sea, when a pod of pilot whales thronged around him. They followed him for hours, growing from a few playful animals to hundreds of large creatures. At least one smacked into his small boat.

The whales popped their heads above the surface and seemed to play together — a gam of whales , gadding about — as Waddington, who is rowing some 2,000 nautical miles from the Newfoundland coast to Penzance, in the United Kingdom, watched in amazement.

“This is so cool,” Waddington said as he took a video of the whales’ antics. With a laugh, he added, “I love it, but I'm scared they're gonna hit my rudder.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tom Waddington (@tomwaddington_skier)

Waddington emerged unscathed — but a little shaken by the risks mammals weighing thousands of pounds can pose to his boat and equipment on an unsupported solo trip.

“They were just playing and going under the boat and I was taking videos,” he said on Facebook and Instagram, describing hundreds of whales around him. Then one of the whales slammed into the side of his light boat.

“And I was like, Oh my God. And suddenly it turned from David Attenborough into Moby Dick. And I was really scared.”

Waddington’s team on land believes the playful mammals are long-finned pilot whales, which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says are known to live in the North Atlantic and “are very social, living in large schools of hundreds of animals separated into close-knit pods of 10 to 20 individuals.”

The whales appeared at a moment when Waddington was feeling a bit low, he said, after a morning full of rain.

“What a special treat,” he said on the video. “I've seen loads of whales, but they've just come to say hello.”

When it came time to take leave of his visitors, Waddington says he wasn’t sure how to do that. He tried shouting a bit, and splashed his oars. He veered north — but the whales followed, and for more than two hours, it seemed more whales kept showing up.

Waddington, who works as a ski instructor, is rowing across the ocean for a fundraiser benefiting Mind , the British mental health charity led by the actor Stephen Fry. Waddington estimates that more than 1,000 whales swam with him. For advice, he called his coach, Charlie Pitcher (who has himself rowed across the Atlantic).

“He was like, the best thing to do is, be quiet and still — which is exactly the opposite of what I did" earlier, he said.

Eventually, the whales left the boat and its sole occupant with a rare story about crossing the Grand Banks , the large fishery at the edge of the North American continental shelf.

“It was absolutely incredible,” Waddington said.

The encounter didn’t harm the boat, or its progress across open water.

Between favorable winds and waves, and what Waddington called “whale-fueled adrenaline,” his boat is making good progress, he added. You can track its voyage online .
