Trailer boats over 10 metres long and with five berths are in short supply. It is precisely in this gap that the company Öchsner in Kürnach serves its customers. The name Öchsner generally stands for trailerable cabin cruisers, which start at around six metres and end with the largest version of the SRX30-Yachtline, our test boat. Anyone who thinks they have seen the boat before is not mistaken. Because the SRX30 is the successor model to the SR30. In this case, the new designation means that not only the tanks and equipment have been changed, but also some of the fittings and the inner shell. As a result of the latter, the wet cell is larger and thus offers users more comfort. The same applies to the larger hatches and the sliding door to the forward cabin. There is a double berth with removable centre cushions that can also be used as a seating area. The camper top covers (extra) can be stowed under the cushions. There is another bench seat in the saloon, which also serves as a single berth. One step further towards the rear is the underfloor cabin with double berth and large hatch (in the cockpit footwell), which provides light and fresh air. The cabin entrance can be separated from the saloon with a curtain.

There is a kitchen block in the saloon, which is equipped as standard with a large refrigerator, sink and storage facilities for crockery as well as "pots and pans". However, if you want to use these, you will have to pay extra for the matching cooker. Tables can be set up in the saloon and in the forward cabin. Next to the kitchenette is the enlarged wet room with toilet, washbasin and shower. Not only has the space itself been enlarged, but also the entrance door and the headroom. However, at 1.80 metres tall, I still have to tilt my head a little. Here too, a large hatch (in the ceiling) provides fresh air. In addition to the aforementioned storage compartments in the forward cabin, there is plenty of storage space throughout the boat. This also includes under the steps leading into the cockpit. Up there, on the port side, there is another refrigerator and a seat/lounger combination (lengthways to the direction of travel). At the rear is the convertible upholstered unit with three adjustment options: as a sun lounger with raised head end, completely flat lounger or normal bench seat. The seating area can be completed with a table. A multifunctional roof, which can be adjusted lengthways, is enthroned above everything. An additional sun cushion for the foredeck is on the accessories list.

Water rats romp around on the large bathing platform, which can be easily reached via the rear entrance (the rear door costs extra). The platform has a "multifunctional step" that can be used as a staircase, water seat or gangway. If you then order the slip rollers in the so-called dinghy package, as on our test boat, you can use this unit to haul in and transport your dinghy. The package also includes an electric stern winch, trim tabs, LED light package and an additional long telescopic ladder. The latter is required if the multifunctional step is piggybacked with the dinghy and can no longer be used as a bathing ladder. There is a stern shower with a long hose in the passageway to the platform for rinsing off after a swim.

The boat is driven from a newly designed sliding seat with a "flip-up" function, which allows the seat to be folded up for more space when travelling in a standing position. The main instrument on our test boat is a 12-inch monitor. It is easy to read and operate. The same applies to the control units for the bow thruster, trim tabs, steering and gearstick. If you push the side-mounted gear lever slightly forwards and turn the engine by 1000 rpm, the hull runs through the water at a good 4 knots. As in fast displacement cruising (around 6.5 knots), a yaw typical of a glider is noticeable. If you push the lever even further forwards, the bow rises from around 2000 rpm and the nose is in the field of vision of the seated driver. After about 5 seconds, the gliding phase begins and the bow lowers again automatically. If you use the trim tabs installed on our test boat, you will noticeably reduce the bow lift and the transition time. The power trim is controlled by an automatic system from Volvo Penta (trim assistant). At around 4000 rpm, we achieve the most economical planing speed of 24 knots. With a fuel consumption of 1.40 l/sm and a tank capacity of 330 litres, this results in a range of 200 nm plus 15% reserve, which is a decent value for this type of boat. Full-throttle pilots reach a good 35 kn and then consume 2.30 l/sm. If you make a tight turn in this situation, the Duoprop tends to pull air when the trim assistant is used. However, a quick turn on the Main is also possible this way. A very tight turn is possible with the automatic trim switched off and the drive set to "down". For the slalom course, we switched the assistant back on and were able to drive our serpentine lines without any problems, and the same applies to the steering, which is always smooth. During slow harbour manoeuvres, a standard bow thruster supports precise mooring.

The equipment with electric bilge pumps, hand bilge pump, fire extinguishing system and fire extinguisher can be described as exemplary. The workmanship and installations also demonstrate a high degree of care. Of course, a trailer boat also needs the right trailer, and the shipyard recommends a 3.5 tonne aluminium trailer from its own production.

Conclusion The Öchsner SRX 30-Yachtline is a trailerable 10-metre cabin cruiser that can easily accommodate five people - making it suitable for both family and friends. The test boat is neatly finished and makes a good, safe journey with the Volvo Pentas 280 hp inboard engine. Thanks to the 330-litre fuel tank, it also has a decent range.

Decision for a boat with trailer

We took delivery of the SR30 YACHTLINE in April. As home port we found Marina Lässig in Kahl am Main, the last corner of Bavaria, about 25 km from the Frankfurt gates. After our first trips up and down the Main, we went on the “Sauerkrauttour” in Whitsun, via Mainz, Koblenz, Trier, Saarbrücken, Strasbourg and down the Rhine. This classic between inland trips was a lot of fun for us despite the tight time frame of two weeks. We continued to settle in with 3-4 people on the boat. At the end of the tour we were sure that we had made the right choice of boat with the SR30 YACHTLINE.

For us, it was important that the boat was still towable, because due to family ties, every August we take the shortest route of 1,100 km by road to La Rochelle on the French Atlantic coast. Arrival by water is possible, but would easily take six weeks. And who, as a non-retiree, has that much time?

The biggest boat that can be towed – excitement at the weigh-in

Before going to the Atlantic for the first time in August, the question arose for all SR30 YACHTLINE owners whether the boat would exceed the permitted trailer load of 3,500 kg. Our boat is equipped with a diesel engine, electric windlass, camping hood, etc. for the trip. The swimming platform for the dinghy has only just been prepared. The ribs are still missing, but we are already equipped with fenders, sheets, grill and stove, plates, linens and towels, etc.

The scales were later finalized: We came in under 3.5 tons! We also kept the 150 kg nose weight of our Range Rover in the green with intelligent loading. The permissible towing weight could still have taken a few kilograms more.

Arrival on the French Atlantic coast

We had planned the trip over three weeks to make the long journey worthwhile. We estimated 16 hours on the Route Nationale just for the round trip. We probably could have gone 2-3 hours faster on the motorway, but we managed to save money across France. We preferred to invest these savings in diesel and wine stocks.

Surprisingly, you quickly get used to driving almost 3,5 t behind. If you look anxiously in the rearview mirror when there are some bumps in the road, you immediately calm down. The caravan lies as calm as a board on the street. Sure, some tight intersections are annoying. But over time you have the necessary calm and peace of mind for it. Already without an extra exterior mirror we could not see the cars behind us or the traffic jams, and in front of us the streets were wonderfully empty.

Arrival in La Rochelle

We used the boat as a camper van and after a night’s rest, we arrived in La Rochelle with its impressive harbor entrance. This part of the Atlantic coast is a great motoring and cruising area because of the offshore islands. The Regatta Vendée Globe or the Volvo Ocean Race starts here. Accordingly, the ports also have capacity – La Rochelle alone with 4,600 berths! Even in high season, you won’t go empty-handed.

Seaworthiness of the SR30 YACHTLINE

The first trip took us to our cottage in L’Aiguillon s/Mer, just 20 nautical miles north. We managed to fully test the seaworthiness of the SR30 YACHTLINE – through wind (power 6) and waves (2 meters)! The boat withstood all the loads, even on a mostly rough ride. But it was also the only uneasy trip. Because for the rest of the vacation the weather calmed down.

Lying among dolphins at right angles to the current at a depth of 4 meters at the mouth of the Lay River was more troublesome. If in the big ports there are mostly tide-independent pontoon piers, you will often find buoys or dolphins in the small ports of the French Atlantic coast – and you inevitably fall into the silt. After 3 meters this was the case at our place. Thank God we were almost on the same level and the boat did not tilt. So we could spend the days completely on the boat in the “main harbor”.

Trip planning according to the tide schedule

The tide schedule was an integral part of the whole trip planning. After all, we had no water under our keel for about 5 hours. The destination therefore had to be not too far away to be able to anchor there with the same tide. But over time you get used to these “rest periods”. Lines suitable for dolphins should not be missing, unless the owners prepare the place in advance with tires or similar plates. We were lucky that the pier neighbors all went hand in hand and helped with advice, action and material.

Tours along the Atlantic coast

Over the next few days, we made several trips along the coast to Les Sables d’Olonne, on the Ile de Ré, where the picturesque ports of Saint Martin, Ars and La Flotte are located, or simply tied up in a bay for a swim. Unfortunately – as always – time passed too quickly and the end of the vacation and the crane appointment were approaching. As the routine increased, everything went well and after 3 weeks we returned home safe and sound.

After the whole touring process we are even more convinced that the SR30 YACHTLINE is the right choice for us. Our initial concern about silting up is not a problem. The ship also handles rough seas with ease. Four people can live on board wonderfully. But all the compromises we made by buying this SR30 have suddenly disappeared. Already today we are looking forward to the next trip!
