I am an Accredited member of the YDSA, my name is Guy Simmons and I am an Independent Yacht, Motor Boat and Small Craft Surveyor based in Felixstowe, near Ipswich in Suffolk and am able to offer the following professional Services throughout Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, the United Kingdom and Europe. Marine Surveyors – Ipswich, Suffolk Ipswich is ideally situated for all marine activities as it is within easy reach of the North Sea shipping lanes. The Port of Ipswich handles considerable commercial traffic, and also offers a unique waterfront-conference facility and a leisure marina – Ipswich Haven Marina, an award-winning 270-berth facility situated in the Wet Dock at the Port of Ipswich. Standing at the head of the River Orwell, the marina is equipped with a host of facilities, including boatyard services, engine maintenance and dry storage. Between Harwich and Ipswich is Woolverstone Marina, with 235 berths and cranage to 9.5 tonnes, and Suffolk Yacht Harbour with 550 berths and cranage to 60 tonnes. Fox’s Marina is located at Ipswich on the River Orwell, and has lifting facilities up to 70 tonnes. The River Orwell is lined by beautiful, scenic countryside and was voted by the Royal Yachting Association as one of the most picturesque rivers in the country. The cruising area includes the rivers Deben, Blackwater, Crouch and Thames, making Ipswich Haven Marina the ideal base for cruises to destinations such as Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, Woodbridge and London. The River Orwell is also only short sail away from mainland Europe, and attracts many sailors from Holland, Belgium, Germany and France.

Adjacent is the River Stour which is particularly scenic. The Colne and Blackwater estuaries offer varied sailing, while turning north takes you towards the River Deben where you can cruise upriver past Ramsholt to the pretty town of Woodbridge. A little further up the coast is the Ore/Alde River, where a fast tide sweeps you past Havergate Island, up to picturesque Orford and on to Aldeburgh. For those wishing to head further afield, Ostend is only 79 miles from Harwich. Holland and France are also within easy reach.

At the mouth of the River Orwell is Shotley marina, a fully equipped marina with a 35 ton travel hoist. There are 350 finger berths catering for vessels ranging in length from 7m to 14m and substantial lateral berthing for larger vessels and visitors.

Marine Surveyors – Felixstowe, Suffolk The Port of Felixstowe, in Felixstowe, Suffolk is the UK’s busiest container port, dealing with 35% of the country’s container cargo. It was developed following the abandonment of a project for a deep-water harbour at Maplin Sands. In 2005 the port of Felixtowe was ranked as the 28th busiest container port in the world and Europe’s sixth busiest. BMS started life with John as the owner and operator of a boatyard and dry dock on the Grand Union Canal (GUC) at Bridge 60 in 1984. Canal vessels of every sort, size and material were serviced, repaired and docked there. Surveying these and many other vessels elsewhere together with participation in the "start-up" of the original voluntary BW Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) were both developed at this time.

A fleet of coal carrying narrow boats was operated in conjunction with South Midland Water Transport and narrow boat shells supplied by Colecraft were built up and outfitted to customers bespoke requirements.

The business was relocated in 1996 to the original Malthouse Wharf site at Thames Lock at the entrance to the GUC. A decision made then to concentrate mainly on surveying small steel hulled vessels up to 45 metres O/A was prompted by the purchase of a 1912 Dutch Motor Barge for restoration. On completion, John then lived on and cruised in it for 12 years in UK and Europe.

Being located close by to the historic EC Jones yard (now MSO Marine) enabled the business to develop an enviable reputation in early riveted iron and steel hulls. Surveying these vintage vessels, together with associated marine engineering investigations, became the heart of the business both in UK and throughout Europe. On John’s retirement, he moved the "back office" for BMS to Suffolk on the East Coast.

John was a member of the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors,(SCMS), YDSA and IIMS and was always keen to develop expertise amongst emerging surveyors, especially in the areas of good fieldcraft and report writing. He mentored several people who have continued to practice successful careers as experts in their own right

Our principal Surveyor is fully qualified and experienced in all aspects of FRP, GRP, Steel, and Aluminium vessels, and fully insured to survey such vessels.

Originally employed by P&O Cruises and trained at sea and at Southampton Solent, Ian sat examinations and became certificated as Unrestricted Chief Engineer (Class 1) for Steam ships and also a couple of years later, for Motor Ships.  He served as Engineer at sea for some years before being asked to come ashore and become the Engineering Superintendent for the P&O Cruises Fleet.

He was promoted to Technical Superintendent later the same year, and then transferred within the P&O Group and became the Technical Manager for P&O European Ferries, based in Felixstowe.

After a number of years, and being promote to Fleet Technical Manager, and evolving the management of a number of ships and shore facilities, he took an opportunity to do something rewarding in a different way and joined the RNLI Charity , as Divisional Engineer, looking after the standards, maintenance and operation of approx 70 lifeboats.  During this period, Ian further studied and qualifled as a Marine Surveyor, and after 7 years surveying part time whilst within the RNLI, he left and now works full time for ANDMarine.

Ian maintains his full membership of the IMarEST, and is also an associate member of RINA, an acreddited member of YDSA, and an Incorporated Engineer and Incorporated Marine Engineer.

Ian has been voted into the Society of Consulting marine Engineers and ship Surveyors, and granted full membership, and carried out a variety of surveys under their banner, including Small Craft Commercial Certification examinations, and tonnage surveys, and MLC (Marine Labour Convention) compliance examinations.

Ian has also been acknowledged as Accredited Vessel INspector under the IMCA / CMID scheme.

Authorities on Monday released the names of seven Virginia residents and a Wisconsin man who were killed when their van collided with a semi-trailer in western Wisconsin. A 2-year-old child was the only survivor.

The Clark County sheriff’s office says the van’s driver, James K. McCoy, 46; Linda Byler, 44; Lydia Byler, 24; Orla Schrock, 24; Ellen Schrock, 23; Delila Schrock, 21; Suzanna Hertzler, 18; and a 6-month-old child died at the scene of Friday morning’s crash at an intersection in the rural community of Dewhurst.

The semi-trailer driver, 51-year-old Daniel Liddicoat of Rewey, Wisconsin, also was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The van was going northbound and there was a stop sign there,” sheriff’s office Chief Deputy James Hirsch said. “The semi was going east and the van pulled right out in front of the semi.”

The 2-year-old was among seven victims ejected from the van by the crash, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Eau Claire. That child’s name and the name of the 6-month-old were not released. Their genders also were not released.

Nathaniel Jahn, 36, said he was on his way to work Friday morning when he stopped at the intersection and watched in disbelief as the van pulled into the path of the semi-trailer.

After calling 911, Jahn said he ran to the wreckage, where he found a woman and pulled her away from the van before he found a second woman lying next to the front of the truck, which had rolled into a ditch along State Highway 95.

He was clearing dirt and debris from the face of the second woman when Jahn said something caught his attention.

“I could hear a faint, like, whimpering sound, I remember. And it turned into a cry,” Jahn said Monday.

“I dug down through the debris listening for the cries and pulling back the debris and I noticed there was a little baby — it turned out it was a little baby boy, but I didn’t know if it was boy or a girl — it was just crying,” Jahn added. “But his arms were moving and his legs were moving, kind of in the fetal position. And I tried to comfort him and I was trying to dig out around him I remember.”

Jahn said he was extremely concerned about moving the child, but the van was burning and the child was close to the semi. He picked up the child, wrapped the child in his sweatshirt and carried the toddler to a police officer.

“I knew I had to move him, to get him away from that wreckage,” Jahn said.

Jahn, a surveyor and a former Marine, built a cross which his two daughters painted white and his wife, Jennifer, adorned with flowers. They travelled Sunday from their home near the city of Neillsville to the crash scene, where he planted the cross.

Jahn, who first gave his account to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, said he feels like he was at the intersection at that moment for a reason. “To be able to find find that little boy and, maybe ease some passing along the way,” Jahn said.

Over the weekend he and his wife visited the child at a hospital and met the child’s grandparents. He said that meeting brought him some comfort because he learned the boy has “got a bunch of family to go back to.”
