Life Onboard The World Residences at Sea

The largest privately-owned residential ship is home to around 150 families.

the world residences

When it comes to buying a new home , for most people, location comes first. What’s the neighborhood like? Is it near the ocean or the countryside? Can I get to work easily? With  The World ship, however, that problem obscures into non-existence – you live everywhere.

Since launching in 2002,  The World  has traveled around the globe’s vast oceans, calling at over 1,000 ports in 120 countries – each of which was selected by a resident committee and the Captain, and eventually decided via vote.

This summer, the ship’s route took it to the UK, where it embarked on a mini tour of the south coast and Wales, before arriving in Greenwich, London . It was here that I boarded for a night. After passing through The World’s strict security (passports have to be given in even if you’re only visiting for the evening, and each guest must take a Covid-19 test), I was on – and first impressions remind me of a cruise ship . But, “This isn’t a cruise,” I was quickly corrected.

Measuring in at 196 ft with a total of 12 decks and 165 residences,  The World  is actually the largest privately-owned residential yacht – and yes, people really live on it. Currently, there are approximately 150 families onboard. While most assume owners are predominantly older couples with more time to spare, there are young families too, some of which opt to home school.

While residents do legally need to have a permanent land address, many spend the vast majority of their time at sea. “I sold my house to buy my apartment,” one resident (who wanted to remain anonymous – discretion is of the utmost importance to residents) told me over dinner at one of  The World’s  four restaurants. Instead, she bought a much smaller property on land, choosing to spend most months of the year on the ship.

Naturally, such novel luxury comes at a price. Residences vary from one-bedroom studios to sprawling three-bedroom apartments, and go from $2m to $15m, not including annual ownership fees, inclusive of a service fee.

“No money exchanges hands on the ship,” I’m told by multiple people I meet during my short 12-hour stint onboard. Instead, the slick cohort of staff discretely keeps tabs on each guest’s expenditures – from meals and drinks to spa treatments – which becomes an annual bill.

Like any other type of home ownership, residents are free to decorate their apartments however they please. I stay in a colorful modern studio; I’m also shown a lavish three-bed apartment owned by interior designers. Each one has its own balcony.

While the idea of cruising around the world in  literally  the comfort of your own home might sound like the dream lifestyle for many, there are plenty of practicalities to consider. “How do you buy new clothes, or make online orders?” I ask my dinner host.

Easily, if a little more slowly than we’re used to on land, it turns out. “We order to  The World’s  offices in Fort Lauderdale, then they can ship to us, or we wait until one of the team is on board,” she explains. Deliveries can take up to a month, so residents often shop where they port.

And what about seeing family and friends? This too is seamlessly catered for – those residents with larger apartments can host friends and family as they would in a normal home. If you’ve got a bigger group coming to stay, there’s an option to rent currently vacant apartments, too. “I’ve got a friend who comes to stay for a month at a time!” my friendly resident tells me.

Naturally, residents have become a close-knit bunch over the years. I’m told a few owners are a little more reserved, but most embrace the unique sense of comradery that could only come with living on a boat together.

Through this community atmosphere, a number of clubs and groups have been born – my dinner companion is an active member of the book club, loves the regular karaoke sessions and even recently went on a songwriting course onboard. There’s also a poker club, wine-tasting sessions, a golf club and movie nights.

When I left  The World  residents and crew were gearing up for one more day in London, before they departed for Antwerp on their way to more northerly shores. This fall, the ship is destined to skirt the Arctic Circle, calling at ports throughout Norway, Iceland and Greenland before reaching Canada.

By December, the ship will have traveled down the east coast of North and South America, ready for a holiday season in Antarctica. My unnamed host will be onboard for much of this. “I’m living the dream!” she says.

The World is the only private residential ship at sea

For a long time, I thought The World was a myth. A community of wealthy residents sailing across the globe full-time on a luxury liner? It sounds like the plot of a hit Netflix show. But, a few weeks ago, I had the rare opportunity to board said ship, where I discovered that the reality is far from fiction.

The World is the first private ship occupied by, owned by, and managed by its residents. It’s been circumnavigating the globe almost non-stop since its inaugural journey in 2002 and, after ironing out a few challenges in the early days, it’s been running successfully since. Occupancy is high and apartments rarely come up, but if you’ve always been interested in life at sea, now’s your chance, as several spaces have hit the market.

Life at sea

Those who’ve heard of The World will know that it is notoriously private. The press is rarely invited onboard so, when I was invited for a tour of the facilities and residences up for sale, I leapt at the chance.

“We don’t call it a cruise ship,” Eddie Wong, residential director, corrected me as we boarded. As it turns out, The World is much more of a home at sea, despite its cruise ship-esque external appearance.

Inside, the entrance opens up to a spacious lobby, which is main access point between the ship’s 12 decks. The top two decks are mostly dedicated to the ship’s communal facilities, including six restaurants and various lounges and bars. On one end of the scale, there’s the casual Fredy’s Deli and the Mediterranean-style Tides with its al fresco balcony and themed nights. On the other is Asian-fusion eatery East and Michelin-inspired Portraits, which has an excellent wine list.

“Wine is very important on the ship,” Wong says as he shows me the impressive cellar. “We have one of the most extensive and highly regarded wine lists at sea. We’ve got around 15,000 bottles of wine onboard and we’ve won numerous wine awards.”

The World is home to six restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining

Residents can select between up to 15,000 bottles of wine from the ship's expansive cellar

Another hotspot for oenophiles is the yacht-themed Regatta bar, which hosts three-piece bands, live pianists and even karaoke nights. It’s also the home of The World Yacht Club, an accredited club with its own flag and reciprocal affiliations with yacht clubs around the world from Monaco and Cornwall to New Zealand and Canada.

Food, drinks and entertainment onboard is included in each resident’s annual service charge – each person is issued with credit so they can eat and drink what they wish without needing to worry about a bill. The annual fee is calculated based on the square footage of each residence, and a fair share of this fee also goes towards the maintenance of the ship.

The ship’s facilities are broad and tailored to the interests of the residents. As many enjoy golf, the ship hires a PGA-licensed golf instructor to helps residents to work on their swing in the 72-course golf simulator. There’s also a fitness and spa centre, an outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, a library, a poker room, and a large theatre where guests can watch movies and shows. It’s also the only ship at sea with a full-size tennis court. “That is our claim to fame,” Wong says.

Around the world

One of the hardest jobs is organising the global itinerary. This task is managed by a special board to help the captain and management committee draft itineraries on which the residents vote. The preferred options are then whittled down and edited through further voting rounds until a majority favourite is found.

Each year, as well as visiting ports in key yachting destinations across the globe, two or three major expeditions are included. “The ship is always full during expeditions because when else would you ever go to these places?” Wong says as he recounts tales from remote spots such as Melanesia, Antarctica, Madagascar and the Northwest Passage.

“We’ve just completed the Iceland expedition. That was incredible. About 30 expeditions leaders came with us and we sailed around, going to little islands, coves and villages to learn about the history and culture of Iceland,” he says. “Another time in the Northwest Passage, we found a polar bear that was so curious it got in the water and swam laps around the ship. Everyone was looking from their balconies. It was a surreal situation.”

The World circumnavigates the globe consistently

In 2023, The World will embark on two back-to-back expeditions to the Arctic Circle: the first venturing throughout Greenland and Ellesmere Island, the second along Canada’s rugged Baffin Coast. Then, the New Year will be celebrated in Antarctica where residents will discover the breath-taking scenery and wildlife of the snowy continent.

Before reaching each destination, residents are invited to the lectures hosted by guest experts. “As part of the enrichment programme, this is very important,” Wong says. “Everyone is so well informed that when they come to a country, they know what’s going on.” The ship has welcomed a variety of speakers in the past, including some high-profile Nobel Prize winners. “The residents are very well connected,” he says with a secretive smile.

It's good company to be in, I realise, as I meet residents who comprise several high-profile personalities and business people, ex-leaders of industry who are fully enjoying their retirements, and more. Many I meet are from the USA, although official statistics reveal that residents hail from 19 different countries.

On the market

Each year, a small selection of homes, ranging from 330 sq ft studios to 3,340 sq ft three-bedroom apartments, are made available for resale at costs ranging from $2.5 to $15 million, plus annual ownership costs. Layouts and décor can be customised to taste, and many residents choose to bring their own interior designers onboard. After all, they’re not creating a vacation home, but a residence. Although there is no pressure to live aboard full-time.

I discover that only a small percentage of residents live onboard full-time. Most also have second (or multiple) properties on land and choose to join the ship for their favourite parts of the itinerary, or for several months at a time.

Residences range in size from 330 sq ft to 3,242 sq ft

Interested parties must pass an approval process before becoming residents

Residents can arrange and decorate their apartments as they wish

Interested parties must apply and pass an approval process which will often involve them coming onboard to discover life for themselves. This is important because, as I discovered, residents come together as one big community filled with its own groups of friends and, I’d assume dramas. Although I don’t witness any of this as I watch residents greet each other like old friends, or even family.

And this community extends beyond life at sea. I joined a walk with some of the residents and met people who’ve made friends, business partners and even life partners through the ship’s community network. I’m told that one Australian guest invited the whole community to a party at their house when the ship was in port in their hometown, while an American who owns a helicopter business invited all their seafaring friends for a flight in theirs.

I left my short stay on The World more curious than I arrived, and with more stories than I’m able to tell, but as with most things in life, there’s no fun in giving all the secrets away.

A look at the most expensive superyachts at the Palm Beach yacht show and their insane features, from basketball courts on deck to ice baths and saunas

  • The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
  • Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
  • These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

Insider Today

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

Related stories

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Humanitarian aid ship completes first food delivery to Gaza by sea

A humanitarian aid ship has completed the first aid delivery by sea to Gaza via a new maritime corridor, unloading 200 tons of food and water to the besieged enclave, the nonprofit World Central Kitchen said Saturday. A second aid ship is preparing to sail from Cyprus, the group said.

“All cargo was offloaded and is being readied for distribution in Gaza,” World Central Kitchen said in a statement.

The second aid ship contained “pallets of canned goods and bulk product — including beans, carrots, canned tuna, chickpeas, canned corn, parboiled rice, flour, oil and salt.” It also included 120 kilograms of fresh dates — commonly eaten to break fasts during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

The maritime mission dubbed “Operation Safeena,” meaning ship in Arabic, was dispatched by World Central Kitchen, a U.S. nonprofit founded by chef José Andrés , and the Spanish search-and-rescue group Open Arms this week. The Israel Defense Forces has previously said that the food aid would be transferred to trucks operated by the nonprofit, which would “distribute them to northern Gaza.”

U.N. officials have warned that Gaza is on the brink of famine, with the situation particularly dire in the north. On Friday, UNICEF warned that almost 1 in 3 children under age 2 in northern Gaza were suffering from acute malnutrition, up from 15.6 percent in January, based on nutrition screenings it and partners had conducted. At least 27 people, mostly children , have died of malnutrition or dehydration in recent weeks, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Aid deliveries to Gaza have become increasingly precarious, with the number of aid trucks plummeting; humanitarian officials say Israel has limited land entry points and targeted civilian police responsible for protecting the convoys. Countries, including the United States, have taken to air dropping aid — a costly and dangerous procedure — while President Biden has announced plans for the U.S. military to construct a floating pier off Gaza’s coast — something that could take up to 60 days to construct.

World Central Kitchen said that Saturday’s aid was offloaded via a jetty the group built on the coast of Gaza and that the second ship could carry two forklifts and a crane to assist with future maritime deliveries. It said it had no information yet on when the second boat, which will carry 240 tons of food aid, might set sail.

Here’s what else to know

Israel said Friday that it will send a delegation to Qatar to continue negotiations for the release of Hamas-held hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israel . The move comes on the heels of the latest cease-fire proposal put forward by Hamas, which Israel has accused of making “unrealistic demands.” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Friday that the Hamas proposal was “in broad brushstrokes, within the bounds of the deal that we’ve been working on now for several months.”

Biden praised a recent speech by Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) that criticized Netanyahu’s government and called for Israel to hold a new election. Biden described it as “a good speech” that “expressed a serious concern shared not only by [Schumer] but by many Americans.” Israeli officials criticized Schumer’s remarks, with Israel’s ambassador to the United States calling it “counterproductive to our common goals.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved plans for a military operation in Rafah, his office said Friday . The statement did not provide additional details about the offensive, which is opposed by several world leaders and humanitarian organizations, who say it could be devastating for the more than 1.4 million Palestinians estimated to be seeking refuge in the city. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters in Vienna on Friday that the Biden administration had not seen a plan from Israel detailing how it would protect civilians if the military moves into the densely populated city.

At least 20 people were killed and more than 150 were injured late Thursday while awaiting aid in northern Gaza, in what Palestinian officials in the enclave said was an Israeli attack. Witnesses interviewed by The Washington Post said they saw an Israeli helicopter and drones randomly firing on Palestinians. The Israeli military denied responsibility for the killings and late Friday released edited footage of what it said showed “Palestinian gunmen opening fire in the midst of Gazan civilians.” The accounts from witnesses and the IDF could not be independently corroborated.

More than a dozen authors have dropped out of a PEN America festival, citing the literary nonprofit’s inaction over the war in Gaza . Naomi Klein, Hisham Matar and Maaza Mengiste are among the writers who have said they will not be participating in the annual PEN World Voices Festival this year, criticizing the organization for failing to call “for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire.” The nonprofit has said on its website that it has “done considerable work in response to the war. Some has been public, and some has been behind the scenes to protect the imperiled artists and writers we are assisting.”

At least 31,553 people have been killed and 73,546 injured in Gaza since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry , which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack and says 249 soldiers have been killed since the start of its military operation in Gaza.

A previous version of this article misstated which ship World Central Kitchen referred to in a statement on food aid. The statement said canned goods, bulk products and fresh dates were on the second aid ship as it prepared for launch. The article has been corrected.

Israel-Gaza war

Israel-Gaza war: Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to make a quick stop in Israel as tensions are rising between the United States and Israel over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans to invade Rafah . Fort Lauderdale police officer wounded in shooting at hotel; suspect dead

A watch and 2 advisories in effect for 7 regions in the area, man, 56, killed after being struck by vehicle on florida turnpike in broward.

Joseph Ojo , Reporter

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Authorities responded to a fatal crash involving a 56-year-old pedestrian that they said temporarily shut down northbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike in Pompano Beach Wednesday morning.

It happened just before 3 a.m. according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A Local 10 News crew was at the scene of the turnpike’s Coconut Creek Parkway exit in Pompano Beach where a yellow tarp was placed over the victim’s body as authorities continued to investigate.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said the pedestrian was walking across the Coconut Creek Parkway when a white Ford service truck moved to the center lane to avoid the pedestrian but the pedestrian abruptly moved into the center lane and was struck by the truck.

Tamarac Fire Rescue arrived at the scene where they pronounced the man dead.

A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson did not identify the victim involved in the crash but confirmed he is from Williston.

Coconut Creek Parkway’s ramp toward the turnpike was temporarily closed but has since reopened. Traffic was temporarily delayed from Coconut Creek Parkway to south of Sample Road.

Authorities have not released any information on the victim involved in the crash and no arrests have been made at this time.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

With 6.5m displaced, Sudan on course to be 'world's worst hunger crisis': UN

AFP via Getty Images

The world’s worst humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Sudan, where the civil war is approaching its one-year anniversary, while the world’s attention has been focused on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

“A humanitarian travesty is playing out in Sudan under a veil of international inattention and inaction,” Edem Wosornu, the director of operations at the UN Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs, said on Wednesday.

Briefing the UN Security Council on the humanitarian situation in Sudan, Wosornu warned of the “harrowing levels of violence” that “have taken a horrendous toll on civilians.”

“By all measures — the sheer scale of humanitarian needs, the numbers of people displaced and facing hunger — Sudan is one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent memory,” Wosornu added.

The conflict in Sudan erupted in the capital Khartoum on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces vying for power after years of instability that followed the fall of longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. The fighting has since spread to other areas of the country.

Since then, at least 14,600 people have been killed, including many women and children, and 26,000 others have been injured, according to the latest data by the UN's human rights office.

The war has also pushed around 6.5 million people to flee their homes in Sudan, while an additional 1.8 million people fled to neighboring countries, in what Wosornu described as the “world's largest internal displacement crisis.”

Wosornu further warned of a looming famine in Sudan as more than 18 million people — more than a third of Sudan’s total population — are already facing acute food insecurity.

“Sudan is on course to become the world's worst hunger crisis,” the UN official said.

Wosornu also spoke about the hindrance of aid deliveries across Sudan and deplored the lack of international action.

“Simply put, we are failing the people of Sudan,” she said.

Earlier this month, the Security Council adopted a resolution calling on Sudan’s warring sides to immediately end the ongoing hostilities and seek a sustainable resolution to the conflict. However, a cease-fire has failed to materialize amid the ongoing fighting between the army and the RSF.

During Wednesday’s briefing, Wosornu called on the concerned parties to push for an immediate cease-fire and a peaceful settlement to the conflict as well as facilitate the entry of cross-border aid and shore up funding for humanitarian operations.

Wosornu’s warnings coincided with a US pledge to provide $47 million in humanitarian assistance for the emergency response in Sudan and neighboring countries, including Chad and South Sudan. The announcement came during a meeting between US Assistant Secretary for Population, Refugees, and Migration Julieta Valls Noyes and Chadian Prime Minister Succes Masra on Wednesday.

According to the State Department, the United States is the largest donor of humanitarian aid to Sudan, providing more than $968 million in aid since September 2023.

On Monday, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child sounded the alarm about attacks and violations committed against children in Sudan.

The CRC said in a news release that 24 million children are at risk of a “generational catastrophe.”

“There were worrying reports of rape of civilians, including children, denial of humanitarian access affecting children’s access to basic necessities and other violations of international law, including violations of children’s economic and social rights,” it added.

There have been several reports of abuses and rights violations by both the Sudanese army and the RSF throughout the war, which UN and rights groups say could amount to war crimes.

In a report released earlier this month, UN experts found evidence of targeted ethnic killings, forced displacement, looting and rape, mostly committed by the RSF.
