S olaris Yachts of Aquilea, Italy, designs and builds a unique line of state-of-the-art cruising yachts for sailors who desire the best mix of speed, stability, comfort and ease of maneuvering in all kinds of weather. With sailing vessels ranging in size from 40 to 111 feet LOA, you can sail the world’s oceans in a deck and cabin setting that embraces a rare blend of easy handling, ergonomics and simple, functional luxury.
The Solaris 44 is emblematic of the company’s focus on technology and responsiveness to the needs of crew and passengers. Measuring a modest 44 feet, roughly the size of today’s typical cruising yacht, the Solaris 44 was made for short-handed crew. Designed by Javier Soto Acebal, all the lines, or running rigging, on this vessel lead to only two winches, both within easy reach of the helm. Even in the middle of a stormy night, a single crew member should have little trouble handling the jib and main sheets.
When you prepare to choose the specific design of the Solaris 44’s deck layout, you can take advantage of the ample space abaft of the helm—her beam is 13 feet, eight inches all the way back to the transom—by opting for a large stern cabin with wide twin berths. The standard version of the rear deck layout is comprised of a roomy sail locker, large cockpit lockers and an independent storage space for the dinghy or life raft.
The quality and finish of the interior joinery are distinctive features of Solaris, renowned and appreciated among the many Solaris owners crossing the world’s oceans today. The refined selection of hardwoods, combined with the skilled, handmade care in the details, yields an airy, sophisticated, yet warm feeling to both the interior and exterior. The end result, according to Solaris, is a vessel that responds to every anticipated need of the crew.
Every model in the Solaris range, unlike in some other mass production yachts on the market, is built in accordance with the strict rules of the Maxi Ocean Yachts (MOY), even though these rules are intended to pertain only to larger yachts. Solaris meets or beats structural MOY requirements with materials contributing to stiff, solid, stress-resistant construction. The main and structural bulkheads are built of composite with a minimum 1.5-inch thickness and are laminated to the hull, rather than glued together with silicone as is the common practice in many mass-produced boats.
The main bulkhead and principal reinforcement design form what is essentially a “structural cage” bearing the local loads of this yacht, such as the mast, chain plates and keel. Solaris claims, “The yacht is unaffected by any deformation and torsion in all sea and wind conditions.” To achieve this, all joinery is laminated to the hull, contributing to the overall, essentially monocoque composite structure of the cabin and deck.
The chain plates, which in most yachts are fabricated of 316 stainless steel, are made of 28 vacuum-bonded layers of unidirectional and bidirectional fibers. The keel, sustained by a one-inch-thick, 316 stainless steel flange plate, is connected to the hull backing plate by 1.25-inch-thick stainless steel bolts.
Experience and sea trials have demonstrated that most yachts suffer from the effects of wind and sea, resulting in at least some hull and cabin deformation over time. In some boats, hull and cabin creaking, plus the occasional crack in hull and deck structures, gradually develop, threatening the overall integrity of the vessel’s hull and superstructure. Though usually expected and generally benign, these fissures can lead to an unacceptable degree of failure at some point in a vessel’s lifetime.
For this reason, Galante points out, the priority of Solaris designers and engineers has been developing and perfecting “the non-deformation of the yacht derived through structural continuity,” or in other words, the development of monocoque, or monolithic, structural designs.
Step aboard a Solaris 44 and stroll around the wide, spacious, flush teak deck surrounding a swept, low-profile cabin top, tinted skylights and portlights, dual helms and running rigging arranged neatly and safely out of the way. Also take note of the separate storage area in the transom for the dinghy.
Then step down the companionway and behold a wide, spacious cabin with ample seating and a large table mounted on a pair of highly polished, adjustable stainless mounts. An ample galley with refrigeration and freezer provide enough room for food prep adjacent to the dining area. Long, tinted portlights line both sides of the cabin and allow enough light to cheer up the cabin while controlling the sun’s glare. Walk forward to the vee-berth and behold a large, wide bunk with a lighted bookshelf, a spacious closet and a seat for dressing while underway. Your stroll through the Solaris 44 will reveal a yacht that is neither too big nor too small, easily managed by one or two crew members, large enough for a small family, yet still allowing a cozy feeling for a small crew. n

A major breakthrough in deck ergonomics in the 44’ sector for Solaris Yachts, the four-winch system was first developed on the Solaris 60 and proved so successful that all Solaris from 44’ upwards now feature this concept, with all lines running below deck. The helmsman of a Solaris 44 can control the sheets, halyards and reef lines effectively single-handing the yacht.
The hull shape is an evolution of the Solaris 55 with a soft chine in the stern quarter and a full width deck at the transom. The maximum aft beam is further enhanced by twin rudders which provide superior grip and directional stability when powered-up. There is a large sail locker forward plus a large aft locker with top access from the cockpit for liferaft storage, inflatable and much more.
The interior is light, spacious and liveable, and benefits from an L-shaped galley to port and a choice of interior woods – oak, teak and walnut. The interior offers a number of different configurations to meet all family and crew requirements.
Careful consideration has been given to weight distribution to ensure perfect balance at sea, and the 44 shares all the same structural advantages of her larger sisters, such as composite main and forward bulkheads, fully-laminated bulkheads with no inner mouldings, E-glass and carbon fibre longitudinal and transverse structural floor beams resin bonded to the hull, stainless steel mast base above the keel and full-width composite chain plates.
It is quite fair to say the Solaris 44 has been a great success since its launch in Cannes 2018. There have been nearly thirty yachts constructed and their popularity remains undiminished. A stiff yacht, which is responsive on the helm, she revels in breeze and her sure footedness and seakeeping inspire confidence.

It was a brisk autumn day, which also meant there was wind. That isn’t always the case on the Chesapeake Bay, and I was looking forward to sailing in the best conditions I’d seen all week. The days following the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, are the perfect time to catch up with the new boats making their U.S. debuts, and I was excited to put the sleek Solaris 44 through its paces on the blustery bay.
Solaris Yachts has been building boats in the historic Italian town of Aquileia at the top of the Adriatic Sea since 1974. Through the IOR days with racers designed by S&S and performance cruisers designed by Doug Peterson to IMS boats from Bruce Farr and Bill Tripp, the company has relied on the work of the best yacht designers in collaboration with its in-house design team. The company’s latest models are from the drafting board of Javier Soto Acebal, whose designs run the gamut from his Soto racers to Wally super yachts.
With a low-slung cabinhouse, flush decks and large cockpit, the 44 exudes speed. And the high freeboard makes room for an open and bright interior. The hull and deck are built with an Airex core and E-glass vacuum sandwich, making it strong and light.
Solaris goes to great lengths to keep the deck flush, and if hardware and equipment can be recessed it is, with a high level of elegance and functionality. All sail control lines are led aft under the deck to a set of stoppers recessed into the coamings on each side of the companionway. The dodger also folds away into the deck until needed.

2023 Solaris SP44 Open
Originally inspired by the classic American northeast dayboat, this sleek, powerful Italian model bears little resemblance other than its tumblehome transom. Influenced by the popular American center console, the Solaris 44 Open was designed by Brunello Acampore of Italy’s Victory Design, to cruise the bay, raft up with friends, entertain, relax in the sun, and enjoy parties on the water in Mediterranean Riviera and Miami style!
The Solaris 44 Open features the largest living area of its category, with its 14’3” beam carrying forward to its high plumb bow, creating greater interior volume for comfortable weekend getaways for four. This Solaris 44 Open features the Plan A cabin layout with a double berth in the forepeak and double berth midships on the port side, opposite a settee, and a full private head with 6’3” headroom in the shower.
Boarding from the stern swim platform is one step up on starboard or port sides to the wide walkaround side deck leading to the cockpit social area, helm, and forward to the bow’s sunpad and forward seat with unobstructed views—high forward freeboard provides safety without railings. The exterior living area hub is the cockpit with an extendable table centered between opposing bench seats that seat three each to enjoy cocktails, refreshments, and socializing. The wet bar located aft of the console’s triple helm seats, includes a “plancha” grill, refrigerator, chill drawers, icemaker, and sink that can be used as a self-draining ice bucket to chill a couple bottles. Fold-down port and starboard bulwarks expand the cockpit deck area with side terraces. The upgraded Fusion Apollo receivers and JL speakers placed throughout the yacht, get the party going!
This Solaris 44 Open with the Volvo Penta IPS 650 engines features the optional DPS (Dynamic Positioning System) that is seamlessly integrated with the joystick controls to maintain the boat’s heading and hold its exact position at a touch and automatically keeps the boat stable, in spite of wind and current.
The new 44 Open has all the seaworthy features of the Solaris Power Range and a unique, unmistakable design. Never before has a 44-footer offered so much.
The Main Deck is perfect for an extended-stay Day Boat. With large sunbeds forward and aft, as well as a generous and convertible seating area, this yacht is perfect for a wonderful day on the water.

Nuclear facility
The explosion of a nuclear reprocessing facility in Tomsk-7 dispersed large amounts of radioactivity over an area of 120 km² , exposing tens of thousands of people to increased levels of radiation and contaminating air, water and soils for many generations to come. It is considered the most serious Russian nuclear accident after Chernobyl and the Kyshtym accident at Mayak.
Tomsk-7 was a “secret city” in Siberia until 1992, when it reverted to its historical name of Seversk. It housed several nuclear facilities for large-scale production of plutonium and uranium for nuclear fuel and weapons, including reprocessing of spent fuel. The closed city was home to about 100,000 workers and their families. One of the worst accidents in the history of the Russian nuclear industry occurred at the Tomsk-7 reprocessing facility on April 6, 1993. That day, workers were pouring nitric acid into a tank in order to separate plutonium from spent nuclear fuel. It is not clear whether the accident was caused by human or technical error, but it is believed that a lack of compressed air caused the mixture of nitric acid, uranium and plutonium to overheat and reach critical temperatures within a few minutes. The ensuing explosion knocked down walls on two floors of the complex, started a fire and released about 250 m³ of radioactive gas, 8.7 kg of uranium and 500 g of plutonium to the environment. This amounted to about 30 Tera-Becquerel (Tera = trillion) of beta- and gamma-emitters and about 6 Giga-Becquerel (Giga = billion) of plutonium-239. An area of 1,500 m² around the plant was severely contaminated, while the radioactive plume covered a total area of 120 km², where increased levels of radioactivity could be detected. The explosion at Tomsk-7 was ranked level 4 of the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES), comparable to the Tokai-mura nuclear accident in Japan in 1999.
Most acutely affected by nuclear fallout were the villages of Georgievka and Nadezhda. Radioactive snowfall in the days after the disaster created hot-spots with radiation levels of up to 30 µGy/h – approximately 100 times normal background radiation. Soils in the areas affected by radioactive fallout showed significantly increased levels of long-lived radioisotopes such as cesium-137 or strontium-90. Cesium-137 can cause solid tumors and genetic defects in offspring when inhaled or ingested through food or water, while strontium-90 is a known cause for leukemia.
With the help of foreign specialists, initial clean-up operations were able to collect and remove about 577 g of plutonium from the area around Tomsk-7. Interestingly enough, only about 450 g of plutonium had been present in the basin before to the explosion, suggesting unreported prior plutonium leaks from the facility. Even months after the explosion, snow samples continued to show increased levels of radioactive isotopes such as plutonium, uranium, zirconium, ruthenium, cerium, niobium and antimony, continually exposing the population to radioactivity. According to the Bellona Foundation, a Norwegian environmental NGO, about 30 major accidents occurred at the Tomsk-7 nuclear facility, releasing about 10 g of plutonium into the atmosphere each year. The NGO also documents large quantities of nuclear waste from 50 years of plutonium production, which have accumulated on the confines of the nuclear facility. Dumped into underground depots or pumped into uncovered holding pools, they pose a continued threat to health. In 2008, a study found increased levels of plutonium and cesium-137 in soils and water samples, suggesting further leaks.
Some reactors at Tomsk-7 were shut down in June 2008, following the 2003 agreement between Russia and the U.S. concerning the elimination of weapons-grade plutonium production. The reprocessing of spent fuel and the dumping of nuclear waste on the premises of what is now called the Siberian Chemical Combine continue to this day, however. Despite the findings of increased levels of plutonium, strontium, cesium and other radioactive particles in soil and water, no meaningful medical studies were performed on the local population. In 2001, a county court in Tomsk ruled on a lawsuit by contaminated inhabitants of the village of Georgievka against the Siberian Chemical Combine, deciding that the company was to pay each claimant a compensation sum equivalent of 860 US-Dollars. During the hearings, 14 of the 26 claimants passed away, according to the Bellona Foundation. Their health was compromised for the production of nuclear fuel and nuclear warheads. They, and everyone else in the area whose health was affected by the catastrophe at Tomsk-7, are also Hibakusha.

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. The Siberian Chemical Combine (Russian: Сибирский химический комбинат) was established in 1953 in Tomsk-7 now known as Seversk, in the Tomsk Region as a single complex of the nuclear technological cycle for the creation of nuclear weapons components based on fissile materials (highly enriched uranium and plutonium). It is a subsidiary of TVEL (Rosatom group).
Seversk (Russian: Се́верск, IPA: [ˈsʲevʲɪrsk]) is a closed city in Tomsk Oblast, Russia, located 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) northwest of Tomsk on the right bank of the Tom River. The population was 108,590 at the 2010 census and 109,106 at the 2002 census. It was previously known as Pyaty Pochtovy (until 1949) [clarification needed] and Tomsk-7 (until 1992).
