Well isn't this posh? Really I ought to drop a star because this Yacht Club is not really near the Thames. But it's super posh, and if you're lucky enough to go to an event here you'll be surrounded with history, be offered excellent food and drink, and have a jolly good time. You also get quite a unique view of Hyde Park from the back of the place, and that in itself is kind of special :)

The Royal Thames Yacht Club may justly claim to be a pioneer in the sport of yachting. It has a most interesting record. The club, under its present title, dates from the year 1823; but it has a history which goes back many years anterior to that. It is really the

oldest organized society associated with yachting in England, for it traces its descent from the Cumberland Fleet—a club which was formed in the year 1775. There is record of a yacht race from Greenwich to the Nore and back in 1749 for a prize pre­sented by Prince George, afterwards King George III.; but we have to wait until 1775 to find any mention of an organization in connection with yachting.

The origin of the club was the immediate outcome of a race, for sailing boats of 2 tons to 5 tons burthen, for a silver cup pre­sented by the Duke of Cumberland, brother of King George. The course on that occasion was from Westminster Bridge to Putney Bridge and back, and the winner was a boat named Aurora, belonging to a Mr. Parks. It is interesting to note that the pioneers of the sport in an organized form were small-boat sailers, and to-day it is still recognised that the best interests of yachting are served by encouraging the smaller classes.

The newly-formed club flourished, and its races between Putney and Blackfriars were events of note in the London entertainments of that period. The Duke of Cumberland, himself a sailor, took a great interest in the welfare of the society which bore his name. He gave cups for competition, and the presentation of one of these trophies to a winner was always made the occasion of much ceremony. The last cup presented by the Duke was competed for in 1786, but the club had a continuous existence until 1823.

In that year a regatta was held in celebration of the coronation of King George IV. This was the last held by the club under its original title, for, in commemoration of the occasion, the name was altered to that of the Coronation Society.

At the first regatta held under its newly-adopted title, a dispute arose in regard to a protest lodged by a competitor in one of the races. This resulted in a serious split amongst the members, and one faction, composed chiefly of competitors in the race over which the dispute had arisen, seceded from the Society. These yachtsmen formed a new club, which they named the Thames Yacht Club. The precise date of its foundation was August 23, 1823. The Coronation Society continued, but, with many of its most active supporters gone, its existence was struggling, and in 1831 it was dissolved, and the majority of its members joined the Thames Yacht Club, which was already a flourishing organization.

From the date of the formation of the Cumberland Fleet down to the year 1842 the club flew the white ensign, but in the latter year the privilege was withdrawn by the Admiralty, on the adoption of the white, as the distinguishing ensign of the Royal Navy. Some of the original flags of the Cumberland Fleet are now carefully preserved in glass cases in the inner hall of the club’s premises in No. 7, Albemarle Street.

This club has the distinction of having introduced the first reasonable system of measurement, which regulated yacht-racing for very many years, and which will probably remain, under the mystic symbols ‘T.M.,’ a memento of its early virility so long as yachting continues to flourish in this country.

The “tween bridges’ courses for races were discarded in 1840, owing to the increasing sizes of yachts, and for many years the matches have been sailed from the Lower Hope, round the Mouse, and back to Gravesend, with the exception of a few seasons, when a triangular course off Southend was tried. The Lower Hope and Gravesend course has been reverted to this year.

Sailing on the Thames in the 18th Century.

Founded in 1775, the Royal Thames Yacht Club was already 132 years old when the first Six Metre took to the water. The Club’s first recorded race was held on the Thames in July 1775 for a silver cup – the first Cumberland Cup – put up by the Duke of Cumberland, younger brother of King George III.  The competing boats were of a very different type to the modern racing yacht. It was not until the 1840s that racing on the open waters of the South coast and Solent began to be popular, the change made possible by the advent of steam trains. One might be forgiven for thinking that, having discovered the open sea, ocean racing was a natural progression but it was not until 1887, the year of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, that a race ‘the like of which had never been known in the annals of yacht racing’ was announced by the Royal Thames Yacht Club over a course of 1,520 nautical miles round the British Isles.

Despite being the oldest continuously operating yacht club in the world and the first ‘Royal’ yacht club, this is probably not the image perceived by those in contact it. The Knightsbridge Clubhouse, arguably the most pleasant re-built London club, is a haven for yachtsmen and women who want a relaxing and exclusive land base in London. The membership also includes a vibrant Younger Members section and our trophy-winning Academy which aims to nurture and develop rising sailing talent.

Many of those using the Clubhouse are based overseas, being members of one of the 60 yacht clubs worldwide with whom we maintain reciprocal arrangements – equally useful for members when racing or cruising overseas. The Clubhouse has two bars, reading and meeting rooms, an excellent restaurant, private dining rooms and cabins for members staying in London. The meeting and dining rooms are also available to non-members as venue for conferences, meetings, dinners and even balls.

The Club’s calendar has nigh on a hundred cruising and racing events at home and each year, providing ample opportunities for those without yachts to get on the water and likewise, equal opportunities for owners seeking crew. Our fleet of J/80 sports boats at Queen Mary Reservoir, Datchet and a further fleet of J/70s, based in Cowes allow for high level club racing. Both fleets are also available for charter. Involvement with the Six Metre Class

Despite the Club’s involvement in the formation of the Metre Rule in 1906, no evidence has yet come to light of ownership by members of very early Six Metres. The Club was always involved in The British American Cup, however, which was sailed in Sixes from the first race in 1921 until 1955. The Thames was heavily involved in re-establishing the Cup after The Great War and now is solely responsible, from the British side, for its continuance. We are pleased to report that we won it in 2019 (the latest contest at time of writing) although it was sailed in J70s.

Amongst our prized and extensive collection of half-hull models, there is a special area for Metre yachts and an individual board for some of the Six Metres owned by Club members. The boats shown, from top to bottom, are Zenith (1924), Lalage (1928), Circe (1937), Johan (1939), Royal Thames (1955), Scoundrel (1986) and Battlecry (1989). Curiously Bunty and Cremona , although winning the One Ton Cup in 1912 and 1913 respectively, are omitted as was Erica , being too recent to make the board.

As a club, our greatest involvement with the class was, unsurprisingly, with Royal Thames. In 1955 a syndicate of Club members paid to have a Six Metre built in order to participate in the truly international racing offered by the class. The first target was the British American Cup held in that year. Sadly the challenge was unsuccessful, her elegant cotton sails being no match for the American synthetic versions. Nonetheless, with 20 guns out of 33 starts, she made her mark. It was in 1958 when she really triumphed, winning the One Ton Cup, helmed by Col ‘Stug’ Perry, and taking 6 line-honours in Cowes Week, helmed by Michael Cream, amongst other successes. That apart, the Club premises have been a regular venue through the ages for planning both national and international event for the class.

The Royal Thames is lucky enough to have several of the ‘Cumberland Cups’ dating to the 18th century amongst its extensive collection of trophies. This includes a number of trophies originally competed for by the Class including the Clyde Six Metre Points Cup and the original British American cup from 1921. A further connection is the Nelson Trophy which was donated to the International Six Metre Association by Don Wood of the Royal Thames Yacht Club. The trophy is awarded at the International Six Metre World and European Championships to the highest placed boat constructed and certificated between 1966 and 1979.

Amongst the Club’s oldest possessions are a set of flags consisting of an ensign, pennant and house flag, dating from the late 18th century. Of a slightly later vintage is a telescope reputedly once belonging to Admiral Lord Nelson.

The Club’s collection of yacht models is extensive, going far beyond the models of the Metre classes mentioned earlier. The half-model collection housed in the Model Room is one of the most comprehensive in the world, tracing the history of yacht design from the mid-19th century to the present day. Elsewhere around the Clubhouse are models from the days of the Cumberland Fleet, warships from the days of sail, steam yachts from the Edwardian era and famous club boats up the modern age.

We are extremely fortunate to have an extensive collection of marine paintings, lithographs and prints, many of which have an interesting history attached to them or their subject matter. Over the Club’s 245 year life a vast amount of paperwork has amassed, and providentially, successive Secretaries have preserved the core of it. We now have two archivists discovering hidden treasures on a regular basis. Amongst these are some superb photographs stretching back nearly 150 years.

We are proud of our club’s significant heritage collections, which are displayed throughout the Clubhouse for all members and visitors to enjoy. The collections not only enhance our members’ experience but also are an inherent part of the character of our historic organisation. We are delighted to able to share a small portion of our collections with a wider audience through our partnership with the Six Metre archive, giving a small insight into the archives and collections we care for. The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

History Established in 1775. The Royal Thames is the oldest royal yacht club in the United Kingdom. It was established in 1775 when the Duke of Cumberland, brother of George III, put up a silver cup for a race on the River Thames and formed the Cumberland Fleet. This remains the alternative name of the Club today. The Royal Thames Yacht Club name originates from 1830 when William IV came to the throne. The members originally met in coffee houses. From 1857, the Club owned various properties in London, moving to 60 Knightsbridge, overlooking Hyde Park, in 1923. The present Clubhouse is the result of a development of the site between 1961 and 1963. Yachting originally took place on the Thames but the Solent became increasingly important in the 1850s as the steam train made access to the South Coast easy. The Club has had many distinguished Flag Officers and traditionally the Commodore has been a member of the royal family.

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.
