Discovery Shipyard Limited’s Southerly 42, Southerly 48 and Bluewater 50 Catamaran are to be built by a new UK shipyard

Ocean Shipyard Ltd has secured exclusive rights to hand build the vessels following the demise of Discovery.

Run by Discovery Shipyard’s former general manager, Steve Edwards, Ocean Shipyard will also offer joinery and refit facilities, and is now operating from Discovery Shipyard’s former Southampton yard.

Discovery went into voluntary liquidation in January, with 77 staff made redundant.

The COVID-19 pandemic, declining orders and supply chain issues were blamed for the closure.

In a statement to Yachting Monthly , liquidators Interpath Advisory said it was progressing with the sale of assets.

‘Discovery Shipyard Limited owned minimal assets. A third party agent has been appointed to market those assets and offers have been received and accepted.

‘The assets include a forklift truck, a van, IT equipment and assorted hand tools and consumables,’ concluded the statement.

According to the UK’s Companies House records, Steve Edwards is now a director of Binti Marine Holdings Ltd, the original holding company of Discovery Shipyard. It follows the resignation of the previous director/owner Werner Schnabele.

Binti Holding GmbH is still listed as a ‘Persons with significant control’ of Binti Marine Holdings Ltd .

According to Company House records in Germany, Schnabele is the managing director of Binti Holding GmbH .

Steve Edwards and Binti Marine Holdings Ltd are listed as ‘Persons with significant control’ of Ocean Shipyard Ltd , according to Companies House records.

Wener Schnabele was one of 401 people who invested £2.2 million in Discovery after a fundraising campaign via Crowdcube.

He became the sole owner of the shipyard in December 2019.

In January 2021, it was announced that Schnaebele had invested a further £2 million in Discovery to be used exclusively on capital expenditures as well as project development including the newly designed Bluewater 50 Catamaran Mk 3, a redesigned Southerly 42 with lifting keel and improvements to the yard’s existing tooling.

Last year, Discovery announced a surge in its order books, including five new models sold off plan.

Ocean Shipyard Ltd looks forward to new Southerly 42 after taking over Discovery Shipyard site

Ocean Shipyard Limited

Led by Steve Edwards, the Discovery Shipyard’s former general manager, Ocean Shipyard Limited will be building Southerly yachts and Bluewater Catamarans.

Ocean Shipyard Limited

The Discovery 48S was voted the Bluewater Cruiser of the Year in our British Yachting Awards in December, just weeks before the shocking news was announced that funding for the shipyard had been withdrawn and liquidators were called in. The company’s 77 employees were made redundant at the time.

Ocean Shipyard Limited

With backing secured for the Bluewater Catamaran and Southerly brands, the new company is building three of the boats that were part-finished, with the customers having signed new contracts with Ocean Shipyard Ltd.

Ocean Shipyard Limited

Target launch for the new Southerly 42 is the spring of 2023.

Steve said: “It is early days for Ocean Shipyard and its highly skilled and motivated team, however it is fair to say we have been overwhelmed by the amazing support from all stakeholders, the staff, existing build clients, our build clients and the wider industry for our services. We are confident that the yard now has a great future.”

Ocean Shipyard Limited is keen to hear from suppliers and potential clients and looks forward to welcoming them to the yard.

Discovery 50 review: This British bluewater catamaran could win over monohull purists

  • Toby Hodges
  • September 24, 2020

British brand Discovery is one of the few monohull yards to build catamarans. Could the Bluewater 50 be one for monohull purists?

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, price as reviewed:.

Many of us who dream of long-term cruising want to do it in comfort, preferably in a quality build from a respected brand. With monohulls, we’d be spoilt for choice in the 50-60ft range with yachts from quality yards such as Oyster, Hallberg-Rassy, Contest and Amel to choose from.

But what if we want the extra space and versatility that a multihull offers? The multihull market has burgeoned in the last decade, but the traditional yards typically don’t build catamarans. In fact, surprisingly few specialise in high-end cruising multihulls.

John and Caroline Charnley, the founders of Discovery Yachts, realised this over a decade ago when they commissioned Bill Dixon to design a 50ft catamaran for short-handed bluewater voyaging . It was, in fact, the same concept on which they’d built their successful monohull business.

While the Charnleys were cruising the oceans in their new catamaran, Discovery changed hands and management teams a couple of times. Its models have recently been revitalised, and that includes the Bluewater 50. We went to Lymington to trial the latest boat, built for Werner Schnaebele, who recently became the 100% shareholder of the reformed Discovery Shipyard.

Schnaebele is also, you will note from the pictures, fanatical about dogs. His company, Binti Marine Holdings, owner of Discovery, is named after one of his two Ridgebacks. His wish to have dog motifs on sails and joinery gave the Marchwood yard the chance to showcase the skills for which its craftsmen are known.

Schnaebele and his friends were on board during our trials as they were in the process of a handover. He is relatively new to sailing and has specified his boat with multiple options, including two gensets, a dive compressor and a top spec thermal camera. His plan is to cruise in the Mediterranean and Baltic with friends.

Excess 15 first look: This vibrant catamaran can sail in the lightest of winds

Launching an entirely new sailing brand in this day and age of economic uncertainty is a rare, brave move. XCS…

What’s the rush?

Choosing a multihull is often a head over heart decision. A racing sailor might be drawn to performance designs, perhaps picturing themselves tiller-steering at double digit speeds from a bucket seat. But on such yachts scrupulous weight management is a must, so there is a hefty price to be paid for composite construction and they often lack creature comforts.

See the pocket-sprung mattresses, electric heads, fridges, freezers and wine stowage in the capacious Bluewater 50, and you start to question how much you really need fast-paced fun.

Many sailors have little multihull experience and can be somewhat nervy when sailing a catamaran. But the Bluewater 50 is much more approachable to traditional monohull sailors. Its relatively low freeboard, for instance, the in-mast furling and familiar twin headsail rig, as well as the standard finish and joiner work, is familiar to anyone used to top end monohulls.

Discovery-Bluewater-50-catamaran-boat-test-interior-detail-credit-Richard-Langdon-Ocean-Images

Note the practical curved edges to the joinerwork. The finish and some layout aspects can be customised

It’s even built in a traditional way, in hand-laid glassfibre, with solid laminate for the hulls, sandwich decks and bulkheads bonded to both. You quickly find yourself thinking this catamaran is not too different from the norm after all.

When it launched ten years ago, the Bluewater 50 looked rather dated. And although recent changes have significantly improved its layout and styling, it’s still more retro than in vogue.

Perhaps that’s no bad thing, however. Buyers will place a much higher value on the practicalities, such as the high bridgedeck clearance, the wide side decks, and visibility from the helm. It’s no surprise to learn that all buyers so far have been former monohull owners.

The main layout difference with the previous model is that Discovery has done away with the original forward master cabin. Previously, it spanned the full beam, but lacked headroom.

The new version has a more conventional three- or four-cabin layout with cabins at either end of the hulls. Natural light and ventilation has also been improved significantly.

Any similarities with a monohull stop abruptly when it comes to handling and hands-on feel. A 26ft wide 20-tonne vessel can seem daunting when you are leaving a dock or a marina berth, especially if there is a crosswind. However, a benefit of catamarans is their twin engines spaced well apart, which allow you to spin the boat in its own length. Thrusters are also an option on the Discovery.

Discovery-Bluewater-50-catamaran-boat-test-side-deck-credit-Richard-Langdon-Ocean-Images

Wide side decks have a secure feeling with high handrails

Once out into the fresh breeze funnelling down the western Solent, I noticed more similarities with a monohull. The in-mast furling system controlling the mainsail and the choice of genoa or self-tacking jib on furlers (powered if desired), would make setting sail a doddle if short-handed.

What struck me most during our test was the consistent, comfortable motion of the Bluewater 50. That will also appeal to traditional cruisers. Even when the boat was over-canvassed,it behaved well and, had we wanted to, reefing would have been a simple push-button affair.

Despite an ugly wind-against-tide chop we experienced no pitching or slamming; the Discovery would get up speed and ride through the waves. It felt similar to a displacement monohull, except that wine bottles were left standing upright on the galley countertop and the tea was brewed from a non-gimballed stove.

Discovery-Bluewater-50-catamaran-boat-test-galley-credit-Richard-Langdon-Ocean-Images

The redesigned Bluewater 50 has a lot more natural light and a generous main living area

A comfortable pace

The price for all that comfort is lack of speed. You might assume a catamaran would be swifter, but I doubt you’d be crossing oceans any faster on the Bluewater 50 than on a similar-sized monohull.

Powered-up, with the blue Code sail and full main set in 20-23 knots of true wind, we averaged 8.5 knots, albeit deep reaching, and being careful not to overload the sail. And when the wind increased a little more and that Code sail was furled away, we enjoyed some fetching and beating under full main and jib, averaging 7 to 7.5 knots.

These may not be the speeds the polars suggest, but the test boat was laden with optional extras – not, though, the Williams Jet tender that has been ordered and will be stowed on davits.

Discovery-Bluewater-50-catamaran-boat-test-davits-credit-Richard-Langdon-Ocean-Images

The aft coaming supports the mainsheet track and davits

Sails were chosen on the basis of performance, longevity and, crucially for this boat, the need to be painted! Peter Sanders, who runs the 45-year-old Sanders loft in Lymington, selected Dyneema cloth encapsulated with Mylar and laminated with a polyester taffeta.

“The result is a very rugged, low-stretch laminate that will easily fit inside the mast chamber,” he explains. Carbon was used in the top third of the vertical mainsail battens for a larger roach and, by offsetting the radar on the mast, the jib could be built with a larger roach too. This produces a nice slot between the sails when beating.

The test boat was fitted with optional hydraulic steering which, unfortunately, is the part most monohull sailors would struggle to accept. It felt positively alien. Even a heavy centre-cockpit monohull with a lengthy steering connection will give some helm sensation as the yacht powers up and heels. Not so here.

Discovery-Bluewater-50-catamaran-boat-test-toby-helm-credit-Richard-Langdon-Ocean-Images

The open helm area can be covered by a fixed bimini

I was concerned by the disconnect I felt between the wheel and rudder response. If you can’t feel the rudder respond, you typically over-compensate, which can be unnerving. It may be that the Bluewater 50 will be sailed on autopilot much of the time and Discovery does offer alternative drives.

I did not like the mainsheet set-up either. The traveller is on the aft beam, which allows for a long boom, but makes the sail awkward to trim from beneath a hard bimini, despite hatches above for sighting the main.

The option of a reversible mainsheet winch, which can be remotely operated, makes some sense. However, I think a yacht designed for short-handed voyaging should have the mainsheet within reach of the helm.

Comfort and shelter

The sightlines on board are very well considered – from helm to galley, to cockpits and navstation, communication is easy. Those in the aft cockpit are separated from the sailing systems yet connected with the helmsman.

The cockpit offers complete protection beneath a hard roof, and the sides can be closed off with canopies – ideal in cold conditions. Six people can sit around the table and there is space for another three on the sofa to starboard – with plenty of stowage beneath the seating. There are sunbed seats each side of the aft cockpit. I had misgivings about the large drop down from these to the aft deck, and I would add another guardrail or two across the transoms.

If the aft cockpit is where you can seek shelter in comfort, the spacious foredeck area suits relaxing in the sun. It’s easy to imagine sundowners in this compact but deep cockpit – or in the optional hot tub, an indulgent Discovery hallmark.

Discovery-Bluewater-50-catamaran-boat-test-cockpit-credit-Richard-Langdon-Ocean-Images

Aft cockpit has soft canopies for full protection

There is plenty of stowage space below this cockpit, while the huge sail lockers in each forepeak will swallow any sails, fenders and most toys. That said, the Bluewater 50 has relatively fine bows, so it would be prudent not to overload the forward ends.

Seagoing design

The main deck living area now has almost all-round views. It will feel particularly large and bright to anyone familiar with the original Bluewater 50 layout, which had a forward owner’s cabin, forward galley and much smaller windows. There is scope for customisation in the layout here, and particularly with the joiner work and décor.

Catamarans rarely heel, but the motion can still be awkward. This Discovery is clearly designed by sailors to go to sea and I liked the large, practical U-shape galley, the secure, forward-facing navstation and the curved and fiddled furniture.

Discovery-Bluewater-50-catamaran-boat-test-navstation-credit-Richard-Langdon-Ocean-Images

Dedicated forward-facing navstation is excellent

The galley has plenty of fiddled Corian worktop space and deep stowage areas. There are options to increase the already generous cold stowage by adding fridges or freezers in the hulls. Portholes in the forward-facing coachroof windows not only provide good ventilation but enable crew to pass food and drink to the forward cockpit.

The dedicated navstation provides the best seat in the house. The compact chart table area has unhindered forward views, a hatch above to sight the mainsail and is still within communication of the helm station. The test boat had throttle controls here too, so this would be a good station for watchkeeping.

An equivalent size and priced monohull, such as a Discovery 58, typically offers a large master suite and two guest cabins, whereas the Bluewater 50 not only gives more space to these guest cabins but also has the option of a fourth cabin (a third guest cabin).

Discovery-Bluewater-50-catamaran-boat-test-guest-cabin-credit-Richard-Langdon-Ocean-Images

The guest cabins have twin berths that can join into doubles

I’d be tempted to opt for the layout that gives one complete hull to owner’s accommodation, with a larger shower, heads, desk and stowage areas. However in the four-cabin test boat, the owner’s suite aft still seemed generous.

The forward cabins have plenty of volume, notably inboard, where there is enough space for an extra raised bunk or locker allocation. Large hatches in these cabins provide ventilation and the option for an easy exit onto the foredeck, and there is an impressive amount of natural light from the vertical portlights and large triangular coachroof windows.

Discovery’s new ownership

Werner Schnaebele made his fortune developing a software integration tool for large companies. He was one of the 401 crowdfunders who invested over £2.2m in the Discovery Yachts Group, before he went on to buy the business.

“From the beginning it was a passion decision not an economic one!” Schnaebele tells me with a smile, before continuing to explain that he’s now in it for the long run.

“The workers and craftsmen are really skilled – and you have to give these people the time to do their work right.”

He thinks the previous management made some mistakes, which included presenting yachts at shows which did not do the skill levels of the yard justice. Hence Schnaebele is delighted to see Discovery back to its high level of finish quality.

The German dog lover won’t get involved in the day to day running of the business – that’s now in the very experienced hands of its sole director, John Burnie. The company is now all under the Discovery Shipyard name, which is owned by Binti Marine Holdings.

Look at some of the latest designs on the market and you would be forgiven for thinking new multihulls are all about speed. Yet I can safely say, if I ever manage to achieve my dream of tradewinds voyaging around the globe, I will not be in any hurry! If you had a budget of £1.5m and were looking at a reliable, popular choice for long-distance short-handed cruising you might consider yachts such as the Discovery 58, Oyster 565 or Hallberg-Rassy 57. For the same money the Bluewater 50 will give you considerably more space. If the boom in 40ft to 60ft production multihulls we’ve seen in the ARC is anything to go by, don’t be surprised if you see more and more sailors making such decisions with their heads, opting for space, rather than their hearts, and being seduced by aesthetics and helming sensation. For those who wish a catamaran to be as similar as possible to the pedigree cruising monohulls they know and love, this Bluewater 50 provides a logical transition.

Review: Scenic Eclipse

ocean discovery yachts

Reviewed by Janice Wald Henderson

What is the line? Scenic Cruises

Name of ship? Scenic Eclipse

Passenger occupancy? 228 (200 in polar regions)

Itinerary? Halifax, Nova Scotia, to New York

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Scenic began in 1986 as Scenic Tours, an Aussie company operating coach tours. In 2005, Scenic entered the European riverboat market and in 2008, introduced its own posh riverboats—the first to sail on European waterways with outside balconies. With Scenic Eclipse ’s debut in 2019 as a “discovery yacht,” the brand drew a larger American audience to its river and ocean vessels. Passengers on board Scenic ships tend to be 55-plus, sophisticated travelers who want the best food, wine, accommodations, and service. The brand's devotees are eager to check out the slightly tweaked Scenic Eclipse II , which debuted in August 2023.

Tell us about the ship in general:

In 2019, the expedition cruise world was abuzz over the 228-passenger, all-suite Scenic Eclipse launch. This ultra-luxe polar ice-class ship resembles a yacht, yet still possesses all the right adventure toys, like helicopters, a submarine, Zodiacs, and kayaks. Oversized stabilizers assist with smoother sails and anchorless positioning keeps seafloors safe.

The vibes on board the Scenic Eclipse are sexier than other expedition ships: Think soft lighting, edgy furnishings, and many cozy corners for snuggling while sipping custom mixology cocktails. Modern art and eye-catching sculptures dot decks, adding extra panache. An almost one-to-one passenger-crew ratio delivers near-instantaneous service. So many amenities—like in-suite dining, alcohol, shore excursions, gratuities, ship transfers, and butler service—are included in cruise fares. Tom Göetter, the savvy corporate executive chef, oversees 10 complimentary dining options. I sailed with this top toque and his modern global cooking blew me away. (No wonder; turns out he was a Top Chef finalist in Germany, and appeared on the 20th anniversary Top Chef: World All-Stars .)

Who is onboard?

The group depends upon the itinerary. On more adventurous polar sails, well-heeled 30-, 40-, and 50-somethings prevail, eager to check off their bucket-lists. Tamer cultural itineraries may draw a 55-plus crowd. Count on interacting with more couples than groups of friends, a mix of well-traveled Americans, Europeans, and Aussies, gleefully pursuing the good life at sea.

Describe the cabins:

Scenic Eclipse offers 114 suites across five decks. I stayed in a deluxe verandah suite, which runs between 344 to 366 square feet. The king bed was comfortable and the pillow menu is a pampering touch. The décor, with clean modern lines and neutral hues, felt fresh. Shoutout to Scenic co-owner Karen Maroney for including Dyson hairdryers with numerous attachments, including a diffuser—a must for curly-haired cruisers like me. Ambient lighting provided modes for every mood.

The sofa and pouf by the marble table delivered enough chill space. My butler did all the right butler things, like bringing morning coffee (although I could use my Illy machine) and restocking my complimentary minibar with vodka.

Another suite plus was the unusual quietness; I didn’t hear any neighboring noise as can often happen on ships, even luxury ones. I spent much time on my balcony—so idyllic for soaking up views or ogling the sunset over flutes of bubbly.

The ship's Grand Deluxe Suites, the next highest level, deliver more space—up to 430 square feet. Spa Suites dramatically increase the luxury: the living rooms are larger and the double-size Philippe Starck bath design includes vitality mist showers with color-light therapy, and glass partitions that switch between clear and opaque. Plus, passengers receive a complimentary one-hour spa treatment and priority shore excursion selections, among various perks. Panorama and Grand Panorama Suites overlook the bow and are huge—between 1,130 and 1,184 square feet—and include such posh appointments as spacious terraces with sun loungers and priority for, well, everything. Owner’s Penthouse Suites run more than 2,000 square feet; count the spa day bed that transforms into a treatment table for a private experience, and a spa pool, among other amenities.

Tell us about the crew:

A one-to-one passenger-crew ratio ensures service excels. Butlers attend to all passengers, fetching cocktails, making dinner reservations, and handling just about every request, whether for onboard or ashore. I found my dark-suited (no tux) white-gloved butler appropriately formal. Overall, the crew—particularly servers—are relaxed and friendly, embracing a private yacht demeanor more than the stiffer one seen on traditional cruise or expedition ships. Kudos to the shore excursion staff, who dealt with changing weather conditions and the ability to board the submarine with aplomb.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Scenic Eclipse offers 10 complimentary dining choices, including 24-hour in-suite service. I was impressed with the modernness of the sophisticated cuisine and the quality ingredients.

I ate my way through most restaurants and determined Sushi@Koko’s as a favorite. Here, you hop on a bar stool or sit at a countertop overlooking the ocean and tuck into the freshest fish—sashimi like yellowtail, and sushi such as ebi (sweet shrimp). The adjacent Koko’s masters Asian fusion; don’t miss the Thai pumpkin coconut soup with grated ginger and lemongrass. The sunken seating and the chance to share multiple dishes with friends made for great fun and good eats.

Reservations are needed for Night Market@Koko’s, where just eight guests sit at a teppanyaki grill while a chef prepares night market-influenced plates with Asian, Indian, or Middle Eastern flavors. Sadly, this tiny eatery opened after I sailed. I can’t wait to try it.

Applause, also, to the Yacht Club, for casual breakfasts and lunches big on flavor and healthy ingredients. Since I’ve been onboard, the indoor pool was (rightfully) removed from the area, creating more lounging space, both inside and out. I often wandered into the all-day Azure Bar & Café for a macaron or barista-made espresso. Lumière, a contemporary and sophisticated French restaurant, also won my heart (and stomach). The onion soup with double oxtail wagyu beef consommé, and grilled duck breast with leg confit, are standouts.

How lovely to sit at a bar where someone pours 1 er (Michel Forge Brut NV) and Grand Cru Champagne (Autréau Blanc de Blancs NV). These are smaller house bubbly, rather than luxe ship’s usual big-house offerings. Servers also present luscious nibbles like fried oysters and caviar.

Main dining room Elements completely satisfied. Servers clad in black vests and black ties act attentive yet not intrusive, and the menu meanders between Italian dishes and American favorites like steak and seafood.

I’d be remiss to not dive deeper into the complimentary alcohol. The buzzy Whiskey Bar, with more than 130 bottles including 12-year-old Yamazaki and 14-year-old Balvenie, is a well-deserved passenger hangout. I already mentioned the of-the-moment Champagne bar. Restaurant wine lists also emphasize smaller vintners, with detailed bottle descriptions.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

Senses Spa is humungous: 5,920 square feet for indulging in treatments and staying fit in a fully equipped gym and yoga and Pilates studio. Expect indoor and outdoor vitality pools, Jacuzzis, women’s and men’s saunas, steam rooms and relaxation lounges, thermal loungers and experience showers, among wellness amenities. Note Japanese shiatsu and Ayurvedic massages among less typical therapies. I didn’t have a treatment but I did take a Tibetan Bowl sound healing session. I entered the room skeptical and emerged hooked. Lying on a mat and listening to the tones felt relaxing and invigorating all at once.

How about the activities and entertainment?

As Scenic Eclipse is an expedition ship, most activities revolve around outings off the vessel, via kayaks, paddleboards, E-bikes, water skis, Zodiacs, helicopters, and submarine. Onboard, passengers can soak in an outdoor Jacuzzi. The up to 20-member expedition team often give talks, and I did take in a lecture or two; the speakers were engaging.

Local entertainment may perform in the spacious theater, though I didn’t catch any shows. I did take an impressive cooking class in Scenic Epicure. While classes are not hands-on, you can learn more about the chef, carefully watch him work, and learn some clever hacks.

How was the experience for families?

Children 12 and up are welcome onboard. I didn’t see any on my sailing, but I imagine at this luxury level, they’re well-traveled and well-behaved. I’ve been told that while the ship doesn’t offer kids special activities, the crew showers them with special attention.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

My voyage sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to New York. Unfortunately, stormy weather ruled out water sports and the submarine. However, I went on fun land excursions, such as a Halifax walking tour that was spellbinding. Our charismatic local guide was incredibly well-versed in Halifax fact and lore—he even shared ghost stories that gave me goosebumps.

In Newport, Rhode Island, a guide led us through jaw-droppingly beautiful, insanely lavish Gilded Age mansions. We also visited Boston, where I explored solo as I know the city well. Such sails are typical East Coast fall foliage cruises, although most begin in Montreal or Quebec City and traverse between Canada and New York. You can score this itinerary on many ships, ranging from mass-market to boutique ultra-luxe lines.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Good to know that the ship provides 100% fresh air throughout the ship, including suites. With anchorless positioning, the seafloor is undisturbed. Newer emission technology and low-sulphur fuel are used.

Anything we missed?

The ship offers complimentary exclusive private dinners, dubbed Chef’s Table@Elements, by invitation only. I’m not sure how you score an invite (I’m guessing it’s for occupants of the priciest suites and other such VIPs), but I did manage to dine here with nine other guests once. The an 11-course degustation tasting is held in a private dining room off of Elements, where each dish is paired with wine. The head chef introduces each course, and as you dine, you see white-toque chefs slicing, dicing, searing, and plating through a glass window.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

I’d pretty much sail anywhere on Scenic Eclipse, even if the itinerary leaned more cultural than expedition. The ship is so stylish and the service and cuisine is superb.

Discovery Shipyard: No Miracle Rescue for Sailboat Builder

Discovery 58

Once again in difficulty for several months, the British shipyard Discovery Shipyard, also builder of Southerly yachts, has failed to find a solution to recover.

Briag Merlet

Discovery Shipyard Liquidator Appointments

Lymington-based Discovery Shipyard has been placed in voluntary liquidation. The directors of the yacht builder of the Discovery Yachts and Southerly Yachts brands, have appointed Neil Gosteow and Stephen Absolom of Interpath Advisory as liquidators. Since December 2021, difficulties had been made public. The owner, Werner Schaebele, who became sole owner in December 2019, through his holding company Binti Marine, had publicly announced that he would no longer invest in the company, making it impossible to turn the company around in the short term.

The company, which employed 80 employees and eight apprentices in January 2021, has since lost employees. Its directors left the company at the beginning of January 2022.

Failure of an ambitious investment project

Yet, less than a year ago, the owner announced his desire to develop these recognized British brands, despite the difficulties they had already gone through in 2019. Werner Schaebele, announced significant investments for 2021. In January 2021, the businessman planned to inject £2 million to strengthen the company's capital and continue to develop the models in its Discovery Yachts and Southerly Yachts ranges, with a particular focus on growth around the Bluewater 50 catamaran. The company announced to have sold 5 boats on plan in 2021. Unfortunately, this was not enough to turn around the British sailing brand and avoid liquidation.

The DISCOVERY Yacht Program is comprised of Scientist-Led Expeditions, Citizen Science, Educational Outreach and Community Engagement, fostering collaborations with organizations, academic institutions, and government agencies. SeaKeepers partners with yacht owners, orchestrating research and outreach tailored to their unique ocean interests.

As boats traverse the globe, SeaKeepers enhances their impact through conservation, research, and education during their voyages. Participation ranges from concise seabed mapping to extensive expeditions. Generous yacht owners may earn tax benefits and recognition at SeaKeepers events, on the website, and within newsletters.

While sails evoke maritime heritage, motor-powered vessels are pivotal for scientific endeavors. Advancing hybrid and electric technologies offer eco-friendly alternatives. SeaKeepers champions responsible practices through the Green Marine Program , advocating for an ocean-conscious future. To further promote eco-friendliness, we offer "The Green Guide to Boating" as part of our Green Marine Program.

Scientist-Led Expeditions provide yacht owners, guests, and crew the opportunity to participate in ongoing research while engaging with influential, well-established marine scientists.

SeaKeepers works with experts in the marine science and oceanography fields to promote and facilitate groundbreaking research.

ocean discovery yachts

Citizen science expeditions offer an opportunity for vessel owners to get involved in smaller-scale marine research initiatives.

These expeditions do not require scientists to be aboard, but they permit vessel owners and crew to participate in ongoing research projects which depend on the participation of non-scientists within the community.

SeaKeepers work with marine educators and other non-profits to provide classrooms and small groups with local marine biology field trips, and also have online resources available for classes that are unable to travel.

The goal of our resources is to provide fun, interesting ways to engage the next generation in environmental conservation.

SeaKeepers shares its mission of ocean research and conservation with local communities throughout the year. Headquarters is actively involved in multiple Floridian communities, taking part in scientific seminars, educational events, beach cleanups, and yachting industry functions.

Similarly the SeaKeepers Asia Chapter organizes community engagement opportunities throughout the year and activities can be found on their page.

SeaKeepers is proud of an extensive fleet that has provided support around the globe. The program’s existence is through the generous support of private vessels which are made available for scientist-led expeditions, citizen science, educational outreach events and community engagement activities. SeaKeepers is extremely grateful for the many different types of vessels which participate in our DISCOVERY Yacht Program and comprise the Fleet.

However to match the demand for oceanographic research, we are still in need of more support to satisfy the demand. Begin your search for an ideal vessel to host an expedition or submit your project for vessel support.
