Positive Customer Review: "One of the most memorable parts for me was the launch. I went with my wife, and Benetti had a Roman Catholic priest bless the yacht. It was very beautiful with all the Italian music and then the British national anthem, and it was all very unexpected. I thought I was just going to be putting the boat in the water, but in fact it turned into a very emotional day!" - Owner of a Benetti called motor yacht 11:11

Collision between motor yachts Minx and Vision with loss of 1 life

Location: Île Sainte-Marguerite, near Cannes, France.

Accident Investigation Report 1/2021

Read our marine accident investigation report, which includes what happened, actions taken, and recommendations:

MAIB investigation report 1-2021: Minx and Vision

Damage to motor yacht Minx

In the evening on 25 May 2019, the Gibraltar registered motor yacht Vision collided with the UK registered motor yacht Minx, which was anchored at Île Sainte-Marguerite, near Cannes, France. Minx’s crewman was on the foredeck and there was nothing he could have done to prevent being fatally struck by Vision’s bow. The accident happened because Vision’s skipper underestimated the risk associated with attempting a fast, close pass by the anchored Minx, a manoeuvre intended to provide an opportunity for the guests to wave goodbye, as the charterer had asked. Vision’s skipper had also consumed cannabis, which is likely to have impaired his judgement.

Safety Issues

it is vital for the safe operation of a commercial motor yacht, that the skipper prioritised the safety of the crew, passengers and the vessel

Vision’s surface-drive propulsion system was complex to operate and there were insufficient margins for error in the skipper’s plan to allow for any misjudgement, loss of control or failure

the use of recreational drugs, even in a ‘tolerant’ individual can impair decision-making and responses, which are vital for the safe operation of vessels

the accident took place in an anchorage with a 5-knot speed limit applicable to all vessels; however, Vision was proceeding at over six times that limit. Speed limits exist for a reason and it was unsafe to proceed at high speed in the anchorage

Recommendation

A safety recommendation (2021/101) has been made to the Royal Yachting Association and the Professional Yachting Association to promulgate the safety lessons from this accident to owners and operators of commercial motor yachts.

The great popularity of multiyachts over recent years is showing no sign of waning. However, a new trend is emerging among many builders: to offer units that are as environmentally friendly as possible. And it’s in this innovative area of the market that the young Turkish brand Vision F Yachts have positioned themselves with their F 80.

This was another nice surprise at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival! Moored right up alongside its competitors, the Vision F 80 blended in perfectly with current trends. Anthracite lacquered hulls, black superstructures, teakcovered deck, rectangular though slightly softened forms, huge flybridge and large opaque windows: the design codes are obviously reminiscent of those of the undisputed leader of luxury multiyachts. This new 80-foot catamaran from Turkey, on display with the large units at the show, demonstrates the irresistible rise of large multipowers, that are now competing unchallenged with the biggest players in the monohull superyacht industry! The Vision F Brand, headquartered in the Tuzla marina in Istanbul, was created in 2018 at the heart of this facility dedicated to yachting. However, it relies on the experience of the Yalova shipyard in the south of the megalopolis, just a stone’s throw from the Bosphorus. This yard has been repairing large yachts for many years. Like Coskun Bayraktar, its General Manager, the young brand is not lacking in enthusiasm and ambition. Having invested locally in the maritime landscape, they have already announced two new models due i...

VisionF Launches Flagship Power Catamaran

  • By Yachting Staff
  • November 30, 2023

VisionF 82

VisionF Yachts in Turkey has launched its 78-foot flagship, all-aluminum power catamaran dubbed the Vision F82.

In addition to the powercat’s 78-foot-7-inch length overall, the Vision F82 is notable for its nearly 32-foot beam, which helps create wide-open entertainment spaces like the 581-square-foot salon. The builder says there is an option to have the galley adjacent to the salon. Additionally, the yacht’s size allows for a three-stateroom layout with the owner’s stateroom found in the starboard hull, complete with closets and en suite head with shower and his-and-hers sinks. There’s also room for two crew cabins for four people.

VisionF 82 Slon

Outside spaces also benefit from the yacht’s LOA and beam, including foredeck with sun pad, a sunken lounge with a sofa and a table (shaded by the flybridge overhang). There is also room for a Williams jet tender and a Sea Doo water scooter, which, according to VisionF, can be launched and retrieved via a dedicated crane. The aft deck is set up with a sofa, four chairs, a dining table and another sun pad nearby. This area offers seamless access to the swim platform.

VisionF 82 Foredeck

Spanning nearly full beam, the flybridge has a two-seat helm forward and to port. The space is flexible and can be arranged with loose furniture for lounging and catching rays. According to VisionF, “to enhance privacy when docked stern-to in the marina, a screen is positioned between the two support pillars at the back.”

From a performance perspective, the Vision F82 is powered with twin Volvo Penta 1050 IPS diesels paired to pod drives, which reportedly provide a top hop of 16 knots and a 1,600-nautical-mile range. The builder says its “eco package” option uses batteries to help the yacht’s hotel loads run sans a generator for up to 20 hours. “ We provide clients with a yachting experience that is ecologically responsible,” said Ali Tanir, general manager at VisionF Yachts.

VisionF 82 Salon

Hull No. 1 of the Vision F82 was built on spec and is set up for the American market, while hull No. 2 is going to a European owner. Hull Nos. 3 and 4 are on track for a March and May 2024 completion, respectively, and are available to be customized for interested owners.

Iconic yachts: The vision behind the radical 74.5m superyacht Zeus

When Martin Francis was commissioned to design Eco , now Zeus , – his first motor yacht – in 1991, the brief from experienced owner Emilio Azcárraga was for a 55 to 60 metre superyacht capable of 25 knots. But after two years’ work that produced everything except the desired ‘wow factor’, Azcárraga said he was thinking of buying Carinthia VI (now The One ), the 71 metre classic Bannenberg design.

As she was longer and had much less accommodation, she did not satisfy the brief Francis had been given, so he showed how, for a given size of superstructure, the projected vessel looked better and went faster with a longer hull. This proposal, at 72 metres, with radical curved windows inspired by Parisian buses, convinced Azcárraga to build the design.

As the contract negotiations progressed, he decided to go for the high-speed gas turbine option and thus increase the contract design speed to 30 knots. Blohm + Voss was chosen as the builder because of its extensive experience with high-speed naval vessels equipped with gas turbines.

The propulsion system selected comprised twin diesel engines driving wing jets for cruising up to 20 knots and a central GE LM1600 gas turbine driving a booster jet. Zeus was the launch customer for the LM1600, and the central KaMeWa waterjet was the largest built at that time. Extensive tank testing comprising 11 different transom and hydrofoil combinations proved that the proposed hydrofoil improved performance dramatically in both cruising (18 knots) and high-speed (30 knots-plus) modes.

For Zeus's interior, Azcárraga asked for an art deco-inspired look, and Francis appointed the designer responsible for the acclaimed Mamounia hotel in Marrakesh, François Zuretti. He had never worked on a yacht before but had an indispensable understanding of the owner’s tastes and lifestyle.

In contrast to today’s practices, Martin Francis managed the entire project, the owner having said: ‘It’s your project – get on with it. Here are five million dollars. Let me know when you need some more.’ None of the team of young designers and architects that was assembled had previous yacht experience but many later made their mark in the industry. Judith Hilpern, Clifford Denn , Espen Øino , Jonny Horsfield , Mark Smith, Dick Sarre and Dan Lenard all worked on the project at different times.

After the predictable – considering the level of innovation – teething troubles, Zeus performed remarkably well, using the gas turbine extensively at speeds of up to 35 knots. Azcárraga cruised her on both sides of the Atlantic and even acquired Eco Supporter , a small tanker, to enable ‘mid-flight’ refuelling on crossings under the gas turbine.

In her original configuration, the aft deck of Zeus was designed to carry a Maule turbo-prop float plane, a Riva Aquarama, a Tulio Abbate custom tender and a Harley Davidson. After her purchase by Larry Ellison in 1999, when she was renamed Katana , Francis converted the aft deck into a basketball court and lowered the owner’s deck aft to create a saloon with an outside dining area. Zeus was sold to British entrepreneur Aidan Barclay in 2004 as Enigma and was sold again in 2017 , renamed Zeus .
