With over 40 years of expertise in yacht construction, they have established a reputation for building top-quality long-range yachts with steel hulls and aluminum superstructures. Having delivered over 80 yachts worldwide, including renowned classics like the Moonen 84 and Moonen 97, as well as the modern Moonen Martinique, their craftsmanship and attention to detail is widely recognized. Moonen Yachts' passion lies in delivering exceptional yachts, providing excellent support and ensuring every detail is of the highest quality. Acquired by yachting enthusiasts Matthew and Louise Baxter in 2019, the shipyard is backed with solid financial support and a commitment to impeccable deliveries and strong customer relationships.

Notable Moonen Superyachts

The shipyard’s many popular semi-custom series include the Moonen 84, 96 RPH and 124 Displacement, the Moonen 82, 94 and 99 Alu Fast Displacement, and the 114 and 130 Explorer yachts. The builder also has designed more models in different sizes for each of these lines.

“Quality versus quantity” is Moonen’s motto, and it capitalises on the local talent pool of Dutch craftsmen. A highly versatile shipyard, Moonen builds steel-hulled full-displacement yachts with steel hulls but also constructs its Fast Displacement yachts wholly in aluminium. The yard also specialises in refit and service work, and maintains a brokerage department that re-sells Moonen yachts in addition to other brands.

Merit AS acquires 80% of Moonen Yachts

Turkish firm Merit AS of Istanbul has acquired 80% share of Dutch yacht maker Moonen Yachts Holding BV.

With the former owner of Moonen yachts - the Scottish Snowie family, selling off 80% of the shares, the remaining 20% is owned by Emile Bilterijst. Emile continues to lead the company as managing partner.

Merit AS, founded in 1989, specializes in transportation and logistics.

Moonen Yachts Holding BV consists of three companies – Moonen Shipyards, Moonen Brokerage, and Inoferro. Moonen Shipyards specialized in building ‘pocket-size super yachts’ between 20 and 45 meters since 1981.

Moonen added a new facility to build and refit yachts up to about 50 meters in Groot-Ammers, The Netherlands in 2008. Moonen Brokerage acts as agent for owners of Moonen yachts ‘with experience’ while Inoferro produces top-quality stainless-steel railings and components for the yachting industry.

Starting point of the Moonen brand of luxury motor yachts was Rien Moonen’s philosophy of designing what he described as ‘pocket sized super yachts’ in a recognisable semi-custom set-up. He figured that he could take the models and drawings of a distinctively styled yacht to boat shows and find clients there. This was the first step to success. At Europe’s largest boat show of Boot Düsseldorf, the yard found its first client. The 69-foot steel motor yacht ‘Lady M’ was launched in 1983, first yacht of the Moonen brand. This is only two years after Rien Moonen took over the yard of the De Ruiter brothers in 1981. Moonen, at that time ready to retire from his painting business, had invested in the yard. When they went bankrupt, the only option to see some return on investment was to take over the yard and see if it could deliver decent earnings. Instead of retiring, Rien Moonen started a new career. The philosophy of building motor yachts that are defined as super yachts not in the first place because of their size, but rather because of their quality has been the yard’s guidance ever since. In the next fifteen years, the yard built over thirty fine yachts, accomplishing a strong brand identity for quality yachts. In 1998, naval architect Emile Bilterijst took over the role of managing director. He organised a friendly competition among naval architects and designers to create a semi-custom series, gracing the lines of a ‘typical Moonen’. It was René van der Velden ’s design for a 72 foot yacht that won. This successful semi-custom has led to the creation of a whole line of semi-custom steel displacement yachts: with he Moonen 72 are now also the 84, 96, 97 and124. Business at Moonen yard has had its ups and downs. Just before Bilterijst took over, Rien Moonen really felt the urgency to close the yard in order to get out of the ever growing debts. And in 2001, Bilterijst was also at the verge of bankruptcy. It were the fine yachts that saved the yard. Faithful clients, dedicated clients have been willing to invest in the yard and keep it running. They always believed a yard that builds such fine yachts like theirs, must have the vitality. But the financial instability continues and in 2013 a new partner enters and in 2019 the shipyard declares bankruptcy and is bought by MATTHEW BAXTE‎‎ .

Moonen Yachts builds premium semi-custom yachts, currently offering the Moonen 110 Mustique (34m/279GT) and the Moonen 122 Martinique (37.4m/345GT). The Mustique and Martinique design families share Moonen’s reputation for superior craftsmanship and ocean-going capability, as well as exteriors by renowned Dutch designer René van der Velden and engineering by Dutch studio Diana Yacht Design – both long-standing partners of Moonen Yachts. Since 2019 the shipyard has excelled under the ownership of Australian shareholders Matthew and Louise Baxter.
