Very nice marina with a super friendly staff. It amazes me that everyone addresses me by my name. I always feel safe when I am at this marina because security is always on top of things. There has never been a night when I visited my boat without the security guard pulling up behind me minutes after arrival. Some people may find that annoying but I find it comforting.

Friendly people. Clean facilities. Launch ramp is a bit tight, especially with the concrete center divider for the two sides. Highly recommended for quick access to the west delta!

We have launched here for years. Never had a complaint before today. The old man jumped my case about parking a certain way and when I attempted to explain I was simply making a large loop to park he continued to repeat himself over and over that I had to park the same way as everyone else. As I said I was attempting to swing wide for my large trailer, into the spot and he just would not relent. I tried to tell him we use this launch often and I'm aware of the rules, he said and I quote "well now you heard from the boss!" I just rolled up my window and continued to do as I was before and parked like everyone else. I don't know what his problem was today but it is not ok to treat paying customers that way.

Clean simple facilty with very friendly staff and reasonable rates for guest birthing.because we came by boat they actually offered to drive us to the nearest store for needed supplies!

Friendly People, clean bathrooms and plenty of space to launch.

Great facility. Has a great ramp, wet and dry storage for boats, launch is protected from current and wind, and Gotcha bait shop is near bye. Friendly staff. My friends have their boats stored there. I trailer my boat and use their ramp.

Had me up and running within a few days notice while everyone else is weeks out in the middle of the season. Didn't even have to bring the boat to them - they came to the Marina. Boat runs like a top now. Very happy with the service and communication.

If you just store there and do your own work, maybe you'll like Skyway. If you want your boat in one piece, properly repaired, safely, by all means, please go somewhere else. Skyway was to rebuild my engine and I'm not sure they did anymore than take it out of my boat, paint it and put it back in, not once, but twice. Due to faulty workmanship, my boat almost caught fire on more than one occasion due to leaking oil from multiple locations, cable melted since it was run over the exhaust line as well as excessive water leaking around the stuffing box and shaft, two years running. I repeatedly asked for a breakdown of everything done to the engine and the name of the repair shop it was sent to....nothing, ever. After dozens of attempts over a 2 year period, to address the ongoing issues caused by Skyway, finally went somewhere else after I was told to take my boat somewhere else by Steve when I asked who's job it was to put oil in the engine after the second rebuild just after I got out onto the lake and a bit of smoking was occurring in the dog house, I had seven souls on board, including two children, all this after leaving Skyway just 90 minutes earlier. I had the engine pulled, yet a third time, by a reputable yard, sent to a very reputable facility for a proper rebuild. I received an estimate, a complete listing of the findings as well as color photos of the complete tear down and rebuild. Findings indicated that this engine was not rebuilt in anyway in the past several years which confirmed my suspicions all along about Skyway. The new diesel repair facility indicated that a major internal portion of the engine was on the brink of a catastrophic failure. They were amazed that the engine was still running. If the engine was just rebuilt previously by Skyway, how in the world could that even be possible? After further investigation, when reinstalling the properly repaired engine, yet another discovery that Skyway's version of a rebuilt stuffing box, which they reconstructed without my knowledge or consent, the rubber barely had anything to cinch onto as the fiberglass work was all wrong and had excessive fiberglass spills around the thru-hull space which also prevented the proper alignment, an alignment which is critical with my V-drive. After the first rebuild, Skyway admitted that they didn't align the engine which caused a catastrophic failure of my V-drive for which they had to reimburse me the costs to overnight and install the new V-drive while I was stranded in northern Michigan returning from the Mac Race. I didn't have reverse for 90% of the two seasons that my boat was under the care of Skyway. My exhaust was spewing diesel for two whole summers even after their supposed rebuild, twice. Skyway tried multiple adjustments, each time telling me that 'it's fine now'. After taking Steve's advice and going to another boat yard as he was now refusing to work on fixing what he F*$& up, he then refused to release my cradle and began sending me invoices for all of the additional work he attempted to perform to correct his own faulty workmanship. At this point, I began researching reviews about Skyway and stumbled upon an article about a lawsuit settlement of which Skyway was also found at fault for a similar, faulty repairs around a shaft, that unfortunately did prove to be catastrophic as the boat sank and three people drowned. A settlement was reached to the tune of $27.9M. I just wanted my engine fixed and now wish I had done my own research prior to arriving at Skyway. After months of neglect from Skyway this past fall/winter, my attorney finally reached an agreement with Skyway and a settlement was reached. My one and only primary contact at Skyway was always Steve Kindra. If you think this can't happen to you, think again. This is about integrity, doing the right thing, which Skyway never did. Do your own research, it's all out there besides here. All I ever did to Skyway was pay my bill...until now. I won't be silent when lives are at stake.

Steve is great. Goes beyond to satisfy as well as recommend the best for the customer. Because of impending weather Steve accelerated our launch allowing us to get safely into our harbor before the weather changed. Highly recommend Skyway.

I've owned a boat for over 20 years and I can't believe it too me so long to find Skyway! Steve and his team treat you like family and go out of their way to provide first class service. Their storage prices are fair and all repairs have an accurate estimate and are done timely and professionally.

I paid in full for heated storage, dropped off the boat, and then was informed they probably wouldn't have space but would try. 10 days after dropoff I followed-up and was told there was no way they could fit it in heated storage and it would need to go outdoor. They worked up a price quote for outdoor storage which was only slightly less than indoor heated storage. Feeling that this was a bait and switch type of arrangement I checked with other yards - most of them quote half of what they charge for outdoor storage. Now I am trapped paying an extremely high haul out and launch fee to get the boat somewhere that charges the usual rate for storage - and they don't seem to see this as a customer service problem at all. I would NOT recommend this facility after my experience.

Best boatyard ever. I've had my boat here for probably 10 years. They always treat me right and their prices are reasonable. Besides basic storage I've had them do engine work, woodwork and various repairs over the years. Sometimes the work wasn't exactly right the first time, but they eventually got the job done.

Boat yards don't get much better than Skyway. You're not a number, you're a member of the family. I just switched over to Skyway this year and could not be happier. Steve Kindra will send me photos of my boat in the dead of winter and call me and let me know if anything is going on that I should be aware of. They are honest and fair on storage costs and work. I get the sense that they care about my boat as much as I do.

Excellent yard, they work hard to make sure the customer is happy and genuinely care about their quality. I have been here 6 years and store a very large sailing catamaran here. They are putting in improvements to the yard continually. Their fiberglass guy is very skilled. They do rigging, full engine work, fiberglass, woodwork, etc. For the price difference, I can't see paying Crowley's $700 more per winter for the same thing. The higher price does not get you better service IMO, plus they don't seem to appreciate their customers the way skyway does. Only negative is the yard is not paved like crowley's but they are now in the process of paving, one section at a time.

Chicago Boat Show setting sail for Rosemont in 2025

The Chicago Boat Show, long a winter attraction at McCormick Place, is leaving the city and setting sail for the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont next year.

The annual show, which has seen dwindling attendance in recent years, is relocating to the northwest suburbs after nearly a century in Chicago, in part to be closer to its target recreational boat-buying customer, organizers said.

“We met with our exhibitors and the decision was made that we need to go out to the suburbs,” said Darren Envall, manager of the Chicago Boat Show. “It is closer to where people are doing boating in the Fox Lake area as well as Lake Geneva, and it is closer to where the dealers are located.”

The show, which dates back nearly a century, has throughout its history been a Chicago event of national importance on the boating industry calendar.

Owned and operated by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the show was a mainstay at McCormick Place for decades, and before that at the since-demolished International Amphitheatre. The show has gone through several incarnations, reaching its pinnacle in the 1990s as the Chicago Boat, Sports & RV Show, which regularly attracted more than 50,000 visitors each year.

While attendance had declined in recent years, it still drew about 40,000 visitors annually before temporarily shutting down in 2021 and 2022 during the pandemic.

The most recent five-day show in January, hampered by a heavy snowstorm, drew fewer than 20,000 attendees, Envall said.

A loss for McCormick Place, a win for Rosemont, the migration of the boat show represents something of a zero-sum game for the Chicago-area convention business, which has been recovering in the post-pandemic landscape.

“Big exciting news,” said Christopher Stephens, executive director of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.

While there had been discussion in the past about luring the boat show to Rosemont, Stephens said things got “more serious” this year, helping the northwest suburb land a major regional event.

Stephens said the Rosemont convention center offered the boat show and its attendees adjacent hotels, entertainment and a 9,000-space parking facility, all of which helped seal the deal. Down the road, the show could expand to the entire 840,000 square feet of exhibition space, as needed.

He also touted safety as an advantage for Rosemont over Chicago, which has struggled with the perception of increased crime in the wake of the pandemic.

“We always want to make sure when people come here that they feel safe,” Stephens said. “We provide as much policing and traffic controls as possible for attendees.”

While corporate meetings are still down, Stephens said conventions and large public events have returned to pre-pandemic levels in Rosemont, with the 2025 calendar now significantly bolstered by the addition of the boat show.

At the same time, he said Rosemont doesn’t try to “poach business” from Chicago.

“We’ve always thought that a strong McCormick Place was good for Rosemont,” Stephens said. “We’ll obviously never turn down an event, if they want to relocate out to Rosemont and we can accommodate them, but we don’t actively solicit.”

For McCormick Place, it’s been win some, lose some in March.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced it was returning its Ignite information technology conference to McCormick Place in November after a nine-year absence. The inaugural event in 2015 drew 20,000 attendees to Chicago’s convention center.

“The sales cycle can be very dynamic in the convention industry,” said Cynthia McCafferty, a McCormick Place spokesperson. “Microsoft Ignite was a great addition to our calendar this year, we have a very robust pipeline of new business ahead and feel good about the future.”

The loss of the boat show is both symbolic and substantial for McCormick Place, erasing a solid and historically well-attended event from the January calendar in 2025, and likely beyond.

The Chicago Boat Show was often the first big public event of the year, setting the table for the annual Chicago Auto Show and filling the exhibition halls with visitors dreaming of summer during the coldest winter months.

In 2025, the Chicago Boat Show will keep the city’s name, at least for now, as it migrates to the suburbs for a scheduled Jan. 8-12 run.

The new version of the show will focus more on fishing boats and weekend warriors who hitch up a trailer and head for the Chain O’Lakes to drop a line, as opposed to plying Lake Michigan in larger crafts. Envall said that represents about 85% of the boaters in the Chicago area, most of whom reside in the suburbs.

Despite its long history in Chicago, Envall said he expects Rosemont to be the event’s home for years to come.

“There’s a time to change and the change was to get out to the village of Rosemont where more of the recreational boater is reflected in the market,” Enval said.

Theater | review: ‘doubt’ returns as a powerful parable on a much-changed broadway.

John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt” was first produced in 2004, near the zenith of the long-lasting crisis over abusive priests hiding in plain sight in the Catholic Church. At the time, it felt like a deeply nuanced play focused on the agony of a whistleblowing nun and, on a broader level, a play about being unsure over a potential accusation that surely will result in grievous harm. Whether the accusation is made or not.

Twenty years later, all reasonable doubt has been removed from “Doubt.”

We’ve learned some depressing things about manipulative humans within powerful institutions since Sister Aloysius Beauvier first sat behind her desk and this taut drama, now back in a gripping new Broadway production from the Roundabout Theatre Company and director Scott Ellis, plays like a cautionary tale, an ode to those women, and some men, who found the courage to stand up against abusers and take the side of the young and vulnerable.

But “Doubt,” now billed as “Doubt: A Parable,” still remains a tense and deeply involving theatrical experience.

I used to think that was because it was deftly structured like a procedural, even like an 85-minute crime thriller. Sister Aloysius (Amy Ryan), the tough-nosed principal of a parochial school, tries to toughen up her scared young sidekick Sister James (Zoe Kazan) to ascertain precisely what Father Brendan Flynn (Liev Schreiber) has been doing with a young student whose breath smelled of communion wine.

But I saw something new and profoundly sad in the play in this revival, thanks in no small part to Ryan’s performance in a role she took over mid-process after the original star, Tyne Daly, left the show. Ryan and Ellis’s focus is not so much on rectitude or certainty but on the character’s fight against her own exhaustion. Ryan, whose performance is tart, vulnerable and unstinting, shows us a character slowly realizing that her unswerving belief in the hierarchy she serves — heck, the way she has ordered her entire life —  is incompatible with her moral and practical quest. And the similarly excellent Kazan, whose teaching nun has the assets and drawbacks of youth, can only stare horrified at a future that she now understands is coming for her, too. It’s just a matter of time.

But, frankly, all of that pales when compared to the most devastating scene in the play, which is among the best scenes of any American drama of the last 20 years. It’s a confrontation between Sister Aloysius and the mother of the Black boy under Father Flynn’s potentially nefarious influence. As excruciatingly played here by Quincy Tyler Bernstine, the woman says, in essence, and for God’s sake, leave it alone because the boy’s heap of troubles will collapse into rubble if anything else is piled thereupon.

This particular scene, Shanley’s most masterful, achieves more in 10 minutes or so than most writers manage in entire plays. It simply reveals with alacrity a great truth about how people holding pain learn to compartmentalize, to broker deals to mitigate compounding situations, none of which, of course, should actually be happening at all. In this particular staging, I found it almost unbearable to watch.

I’d argue Schreiber could have chosen an additional note of vulnerability in his performance but his Father Flynn certainly imposes himself, which is what the play demands and, even though the boy is unseen, the actor sure has nailed down the aggressively obsequious kind of intimacy with young people that we’ve now learned came at considerable societal cost.

“Doubt” moves fast, especially here on a relatively simple but highly effective set design from David Rockwell that seems only to add to the play’s inherent sense of dread. You feel a very physical disconnect between community and loneliness, fresh air and hidden secrets, the resolute teacher and the cornered man with petty power. The past being prologue, I left yet more worried for the future than when I came in the door. But here was a play, a timely and now seemingly timeless piece of art that shed light and did what the American theater is supposed to do.
