Boat of the Week: This Luxe New 65-Foot Yacht Is Like a Rolls-Royce on the High Seas

Pushing the throttles on this new $4.6 million sportbridge cruiser, with 3,300 hp from its twin V-12 Caterpillar C32s, the Fairline feels every bit as powerful as the Rolls, which I’ve driven multiple times.

Fairline's Phantom 65 is the latest sport-bridge model from the UK builder.

Unveiled at last fall’s Cannes boat show, this new 65-footer brings back the revered Phantom name to the Fairline model lineup and, for the first time, there’s a sport-bridge layout in the brand.

It also signals a product renaissance for the U.K. builder. At next month’s Southampton Boat Show, it will debut an all-new Squadron 58 with fold-down side terraces. Then at next January’s Dusseldorf Boot show, a new Targa 40 sport boat gets unwrapped.

If the bold lines of this 65-footer look slightly familiar, it may be because the hull and lower deck were evolved from Fairline’s popular Targa 65 sports coupe, penned back in 2016 by Italian designer Alberto Mancini with naval architecture by Holland’s Vripack.

For the Phantom, Fairline’s own in-house design team evolved the shape of the glass-filled superstructure, added a compact flybridge with an upper helm, and completely redesigned the interior.

“This sportbridge sector is key for us right now, especially here in the U.S., where owners tend to look for more outdoor space,” says Steve Leeson, President of Fairline Yachts Americas, who is on-hand for our test drive.

What sets the Fairline apart is the smart use of space that includes a new, oversized tender garage at the stern that’s big enough for an 11-foot Williams Sportjet 345 RIB. The boat also manages to squeeze a crew cabin beside the garage, plus a separate compartment for water toys like Seabobs.

Then there are features like the sportbridge (a more compact version of the traditional flybridge) with seating space for a dozen or so guests and a wet bar for alfresco dining. There’s plenty of space, too, in the aft, teak-decked cockpit, which flows into the galley and salon through disappearing sliding glass doors. One of the highlights of the salon is the sunroof above the lower helm that opens for fresh air and a great view of the sky.

The accommodations include three cabins and three en suites. Up front is a VIP that is large enough to be the main, while the full-beam primary stateroom is amidships, with an unusually large full-beam bathroom.

The main impression I got from the yacht was the quality of materials and design flourishes that have gone into its construction. Look no farther than many of the lower-deck doors, which are made of hand-finished walnut with a lovely wide, contrasting inlaid strip of maple. There are also are walls of striking channeled walnut that add visual texture. It’s without doubt some of the best cabinetry and woodwork we’ve seen on a sub-100-foot yacht.

In the Atlantic, the C32s’ big turbos start spooling up at around 1,650 rpm, punching the Phantom up onto plane. The boat’s cruising sweet spot is around 28 knots and 1,800 rpm, with a fuel burn of 110 gallons an hour. But it’s impossible to resist that 37-knot top-end thrust, so I punch the throttles forward.

With this new Phantom 65, Fairline has created a luxury sportbridge cruiser that’s big on style, generous with space, and boasts impressive performance.

Fairline Yachts shipyard changes ownership again

Squadron 50 by Fairline Yachts

British yacht builder Fairline Yachts is being acquired again, less than a year after the last deal. The new owner wants to accelerate the internationalization of its sales of high-end motorboats.

Hanover Investors acquires Fairline Yachts

Fairline Yachts changed ownership on June 14, 2021. Less than a year after it took over as majority shareholder of the British shipyard in July 2020, the RiverRock fund sold its stake to London-based investment fund Hanover Investors. The amount of the transaction has not been made public. It thus takes control of the high-end motorboat manufacturer founded in 1967 in Oundle, Northampshire. It has a worldwide network of 50 dealers.

Accelerating the internationalization of the British shipyard

Fairline Yachts managing director Peter McNulty welcomes the arrival of the new shareholder, which he sees as recognition of the value of the British yachting business. On this occasion, Jason Carley, a partner in the Hanover Investors fund and previously a member of Fairline Yachts' management between July 2020 and March 2021, returns to the shipyard's side. "It's a recognition of the great work done by the team here at Fairline that a company of the caliber of Hanover Investors has decided to support us. They have an excellent track record of working with companies through their global vision to integrate both investment and operations, with a particular focus on companies that are in the process of internationalizing. While we have a strong international footprint, with Hanover on board, I know we can go much further and faster," said Peter McNulty.

Fairline To Debut Two New Yachts

  • By Yachting Staff
  • December 11, 2023

Fairline Targa 40

British yacht builder Fairline says it will have the global debut of its Targa 40 and the European debut of its Squadron 58 at Boot Düsseldorf in January.

The Fairline Targa 40 creates a new entry point for the builder’s Targa series, which also includes 45- and 50-foot models. Fairline says the Targa 40 takes design cues from its predecessor, the Targa 38, with a modern feel and multifunction livability. The family-size express cruiser is notable for its flowing profile, enhanced by hull-side glass, which visually lowers the exterior look. The Targa 40’s sheerline seemingly streaks aft, indicating the yacht’s potential mid-30-knot performance. The beam expands admiships helping optimize interior volume and the two-stateroom layout, before tapering aft and resolving at the SUV-like cockpit arrangement.

To that end, the Targa 40’s cockpit has a foldout deck to starboard, increasing usable deck real estate. A sun pad here can be adjusted several ways to create seating facing aft as well as towards the foldout deck. C-shape seating to port wraps around a table for alfresco meals. Like the other seating spaces, the backrests can be adjusted to create aft-facing seating to keep an eye on swimmers or just take in a sunset with friends. To port, there is also a garage with tender stowage.

Fairline Targa 40

The bridge deck’s two-seat helm station with Garmin displays is to starboard and there is guest seating to port. A hardtop with retractable canvas can open the main deck to the sun and breeze when desired.

Belowdecks, the Targa 40 has an owners’ stateroom forward with access to the single head with shower, taking full advantage of the yacht’s 13-foot beam. Abaft the owners’ space is a guest stateroom with twin berths for kids or guests. There is also a U-shaped dinette to starboard and a galley with two-burner electric cooktop, sink and more. All of the spaces belowdecks have water views out the hull-side windows.

Power for the Fairline Targa 40 is either twin 340 hp Volvo Penta D6 diesels or twin 380 hp Volvo Penta D6 diesels paired to sterndrives. Projected top hop is 32 knots and 36 knots, respectively.

Fairline Squadron 58

The Fairline Squadron 58 fits into the middle of the builer’s flybridge series, which also includes the Squadron 50 and Squadron 68 .

Like the Targa 40, the Squadron 58 is aimed at maximizing available real estate and increasing it where it can.

For instance, the Squadron 58 has hydraulic foldout decks to port and starboard. This setup lets owners place two stools into the port side deck, and with the window down it creates an inside-outside bar area connecting it to the aft galley. To starboard, the balcony creates a seating area for morning coffee with a book. The cockpit has U-shaped seating on centerline with views aft through the glass balustrade. It’s a modular seating arrangement so, like the Targa 40, they can be adjusted to change views. Teak steps flanking the cockpit lead to the yacht’s beach club, which has an extendable teak swim platform, where sun pads can be added or owners can use the space for swimming or to launch the tender and water toys.

The Squadron 58 has two twin-seat helm stations, both located to starboard. On The flybridge, there is guest seating across from the helm as well as U-shaped seating with a table. On the main deck, there is guest seating abaft the helm as well as dinette to port.

Fairline Squadron 58

Accommodations on the Squadron 58 include a three-stateroom layout with a full-beam owners’ space amidships, a forepeak VIP and a third guest stateroom with twins abaft and to starboard of the VIP. The standard layout includes a two-head arrangement. There is a dayhead option, which places the third head all the way aft. There is also a crew-cabin option, although most buyers will be owner-operators.

Power for the Fairline Squadron 58 is either twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels or twin 1,000 hp D13 diesels, both in a conventional straight-shaft configuration. Fairline reports top hops of about 31 and 32 knots, respectively.

RiverRock acquires a majority stake in Fairline Yachts

Riverrock european opportunities fund ii has acquired a majority stake in the british yacht manufacturer….

Image for article RiverRock acquires a majority stake in Fairline Yachts

Following a successful partnership over the past 11 months, RiverRock has underlined its ongoing support for Fairline Yachts by committing to a significant capital investment programme that secures the boat builder’s financial future following the turbulence created by the COVID-19 global pandemic. Alexander Volov and Igor Glyanenko, who bought Fairline Yachts’ assets in 2016, apparently welcome the investment from RiverRock and, while maintaining a financial interest in the shipyard, will be focussing on their core businesses, which have been substantially impacted by both the COVID-19 pandemic and the oil price shock of recent months.

“By taking a majority stake in the business, RiverRock is demonstrating its continued support and confidence in Fairline,” comments Peter McNulty, COO of Fairline Yachts. “The investment secures our financial future and ensures we can continue the roll-out of our long-term strategic plan for the brand.

“As announced previously, the company has made some tough decisions to right-size the business as a result of the current extremely challenging market conditions. This has better positioned the company and aligns it more closely with our strategic plans both in terms of product and regional growth. The new investment from RiverRock provides us with the capital and execution ability we needed to fulfil these long-term growth plans. The coronavirus pandemic has put additional pressure on all businesses and RiverRock’s investment means we can continue with our exciting and highly innovative new product development programme.”

“We are pleased to take the next step on our partnership journey with Fairline Yachts. We firmly believe in the team at the help and the strength of the brand. We appreciate Alex and Igor’s significant investment over the last four years and our additional investment will now support Fairline to grow and will enable the company to keep doing what it does best – building exquisitely designed, handcrafted boats made in Great Britain,” comments Jason Carley, senior portfolio manager at RiverRock.

While Fairline Yachts does not operate within the superyacht market, with its largest project to date being 25m, it has nonetheless played an important role in the superyacht customer journey since its conception in 1963. As the superyacht industry matures, it is increasingly appreciating the vital role that the various feeder markets play in its own success. Typically, an individual’s wealth profile grows and evolves over time, few people simply wake up one day extremely wealthy. Shipyards like Fairline do much to introduce people to the yachting market and, crucially, help them to stay in the yachting market by allowing them to grow through the various size ranges.

£18.1m operating loss for Fairline Yachts – turnover improves

Fairline has continued to invest in new models

Fairline Yachts saw its turnover increase by 55% in 2022 to £48m, however alongside this, the luxury boatbuilder had an operating loss of £18.1m, up from £17.7m in 2021.

The company’s latest accounts show 2022 remained a challenging year for the boatbuilder, with operations and results impacted by shortages of key parts and supply chain issues.

These factors increased the time taken to manufacture the boats and also impacted the efficiency of production during the year.

However, despite these difficulties, the boatbuilder continued to invest in new product development as part of its product investment strategy with the launch of a new Squadron 68, a Phantom 65 as well as new entry and mid-sized models.

And the boatbuilder says demand for models has remained strong with the sales team continuing to strengthen its global dealer network as well as building out the sales order book to 2025 and beyond.

The Squadron 68 is one of Fairline's latest models

And the directors say the forecast for 2024 shows an improvement in both turnover and profitability as the business returns to a stable platform, with improvements in operational performance, supported by a good forward order sales book.

At the end of 2023, most of the 2024 production slots were sold and allocated out to 2025.

And the directors add that while the unaudited accounts for 2023 show the boatbuilder has been impacted by global supply chain uncertainties, there is an improvement compared to 2022 as the business implements its change strategy.

In June 2021, Fairline Yachts Holdings Ltd became the sole shareholder of Fairline Yachts Ltd, with additional investment injected and a new board of directors appointed.

The directors have worked with the ultimate shareholder, Hanover Active Equity Fund II, and other financial institutions and have increased financing facilities to support the business going forward.

In 2023, the company received equity funding from Hanover to cover its working capital needs and the directors believe these facilities along with cashflow from operations will allow the company to operate within its financing needs. The company has received a letter of support from Hanover in terms of further funding.

The brand new 2022 model  Fairline Phantom 65 features a wonderfully clean design with a single fluid styling line sweeping up past the windscreen into a compact sports bridge before evolving into a low-level radar arch. The sports bridge is a particularly smart piece of design, barely detracting from its sporty profile but still finding space for a proper dinette and small wet bar in addition to a pair of helm seats and a second lounging area tucked behind the smoked glass. With two more al fresco dining and lounging spaces on the foredeck and aft cockpit respectively, the Fairline Phantom 65 fits the bill as an impressive and versatile craft.

Fairline Squadron 50

Fairline Yachts reveals plans for brand new day boat

British luxury boat builder, Fairline Yachts, announces plans for a brand new 33ft express cruiser. This new model will be the first from Fairline’s new project ‘F-Line’ series and will launch in early 2019.

This is the latest Fairline designed by Alberto Mancini – recently crowned Yacht Designer of the Year at the highly prestigious World Yacht Trophies. The phenomenally successful partnership between the Italian designer and British boatyard has created a very stylish take on what a comfortable day boat should look like.

The new 33, which has already received over a dozen orders from Fairline’s global dealer network, has drawn on Fairline’s strong heritage of producing fun and exciting day boats, but features luxurious styling cues synonymous with Mancini.

Head of Design at Fairline Yachts, Andrew Pope, comments, “Hot on the heels of launching the award-winning Targa 63 GTO last week at Cannes and the all new Targa 43 Open due to debut next spring, we now reveal the latest Alberto Mancini designed Fairline. Inspired by our long heritage in designing and building sub-40ft yachts, we are pleased to make public our first, exciting, compact day boat which will further broaden the appeal of the Fairline brand. This stylish day boat embraces outdoor living and will feature an expansive foredeck sunbathing area, open plan forward cabin and innovative fold down transom. The wrap around windows offer a light and airy feel and hand-crafted details add luxury.

The design clearly draws on Fairline’s core design DNA but with a very modern twist and, of course, offers the robust seakeeping we are known the world over for. Watch this space for more updates!”

Russia launches giant missile, drone attack against Ukraine following retaliation promise

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Moscow unleashed a massive missile and drone barrage on western Ukraine Sunday, following through on its promise to retaliate for a Ukrainian attack on a Russian tanker.

Russian and Ukrainian shelling across the country overnight killed in at least six people, officials said.

Separately, Moscow’s second-largest airport briefly suspended flights early Sunday following a foiled drone attack near the Russian capital.

READ MORE: Russia accuses Ukraine of more drone attacks in Moscow and border region

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 70 attack drones and missiles, including cruise missiles from aircraft over the Caspian Sea and Iranian-made, Shahed-136/131 strike UAVs.

Serhiy Tyurin, deputy head of Ukraine’s Khmelnytsky region military administration, said three waves of missiles hit the Starokostiantyniv area, damaging several buildings and igniting a fire at a warehouse. The strike may have been intended for the city’s airfield, officials said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the facilities of aircraft engine manufacturer Motor Sich in the Zaporizhzhia region had also come under attack.

The Russian barrage came after a Ukrainian drone  attack on a Russian tanker  in the Black Sea near Crimea late Friday. Ukraine also struck a major Russian port with drones earlier the same day.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned what she called a Ukrainian “terrorist attack” on a civilian vessel in the Kerch Strait.

“There can be no justification for such barbaric actions, they will not go unanswered and their authors and perpetrators will inevitably be punished,” Zakharova posted on the Telegram messaging app.

An official with Ukraine’s Security Service confirmed to The Associated Press that a Ukrainian drone packed with 450 kilograms (992 pounds) of explosive the service struck the tanker that as transporting fuel for Russian forces. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Russia’s Federal Agency for Marine and River Transport posted on Telegram that although the drone blasted a hole in the tanker’s engine room, there were no casualties among the 11 crew members. On Sunday, a Ukrainian missile hit the Chonhar bridge that connects the Russian-occupied Kherson region and northern Crimea.

The strike caused minor damage to the bridge’s roadway, said Vladimir Saldo, the Moscow-installed leader of the Kherson region. He also said that several more rockets had been shot down by air defense forces at the time of the attack.

The bridge, which is one of three key road bridges connecting the Crimean peninsula to the mainland, was previously attacked on July 22 and 29.

Two of the six fatalities overnight Sunday occurred during a Russian air strike in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, according to the head of the local regional military administration, Oleh Syniehubov. Another four people were injured.

Zelenskyy said that a guided bomb had hit a blood transfusion center in the area’s Kupyan district late on August 5.

“This war crime alone says everything about Russian aggression,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media. “Defeating terrorists is a matter of honor for everyone who values life.”

Heavy shelling continued along the frontline in Eastern Ukraine as Kyiv continues to push forward with its ongoing counteroffensive. Elsewhere in the Kharkiv region, a 58-year-old woman was killed and a 66-year-old man was hospitalized after Russian shelling of the village of Podoly, an official said. In Ukraine’s eastern Kupyan region, Russian missiles injured a 55-year-old man and ignited a forest fire, officials said on social media. Russian attacks in the Donetsk region villages of Torske and Niu-York killed two people, local governor Pavlo Kyrylenko posted on social media.

Ukrainian shelling in Russian-held Donetsk killed a woman in her eighties, the city’s Moscow-appointed mayor Alexei Kulemzin said Sunday. The shelling also set the main building of a university on fire, according to the Moscow-installed head of the illegally annexed region, Denis Pushilin.

Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said that the blaze caused the building’s roof to collapse, but that there were no casualties.

Moscow’s Vnukovo airport, located 15 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of the Russian capital, briefly suspended flights Sunday morning after a drone was shot down in the airspace around the city. The attack was one of four strikes on the Russian capital in the space of a month, spotlighting Moscow’s vulnerability as Russia’s war in Ukraine drags into its second year.

The drone was destroyed by air defense systems in the Podolsk region of the Moscow suburbs, the Russian defense ministry said.

The Russian defense ministry said no one was injured from the abortive drone attack, although Russian media outlet Baza later reported that a 77-year-old man suffered a shrapnel wound to his hand. The reports could not be independently verified.

Ukrainian authorities, which generally avoid commenting on attacks on Russian soil, didn’t say whether it launched the raid.

Flights were last halted at the airport on July 30, when two drones crashed into the Moscow City business district after being jammed by Russian air defenses.

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — A drone attacked a skyscraper in central Moscow early Tuesday for the second time in around 48 hours, damaging the building’s facade and further underscoring the Russian capital’s vulnerability. Russian authorities accused Ukraine of staging the assault.

An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted that Moscow “is rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war,” without confirming or denying Kyiv’s involvement.

Russian officials have claimed that the repeated attacks on the capital region reflect failures in Ukraine’s counteroffensive to recapture Russian-occupied territory. Zelenskyy said over the weekend that “the war is gradually coming back to Russian territory,” but he stopped short of taking responsibility.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it shot down two Ukrainian drones outside Moscow and jammed another, sending it crashing into a skyscraper and damaging the building’s facade. The attack happened in a business district of high-rise office buildings known as Moscow City, west of the Kremlin.

And it has been the site of ethnic persecutions, forced deportations and political repression. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drone crashed into the same building that was damaged Sunday in a similar attack. IQ-Quarter, located 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) from the Kremlin, houses multiple government agencies, including the headquarters of the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The mayor said the attack on Tuesday did not result in any casualties.

It wasn’t clear why the same building was hit twice in a row. In both attacks, the Russian military said the drones that hit the skyscraper were jammed before crashing, which elicited questions from even the staunchest supporters of the Kremlin.

Margarita Simonyan, chief editor of the state-funded TV channel RT, said in a social media post that “a drone hitting the same tower for the second time in a row, where three federal ministries are located, at least requires explaining the comments that the electronic warfare downed them all.”

Asked about how protected the Russian capital is, given that supposedly jammed drones hit the same building, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov redirected the question to the Defense Ministry, saying only that “the threat exists and measures are being taken.”

Sobyanin said the drone that struck the building Tuesday hit the 21st floor, one of the floors housing the Economic Development ministry. Photos from the scene showed several panels of glass missing, exposing the charred insides of the building. According to the mayor, 150 square meters (about 1,600 square feet) of the building’s glass facade were damaged.

Russian news agency Interfax cited Darya Levchenko, an adviser to the economic development minister, as saying that the ministry’s staff worked from home Tuesday while damage to the office was assessed.

The Russian military also said Ukrainian forces tried to attack two of its warships in the Black Sea, using maritime drones. Three drones targeted two patrol vessels, Sergei Kotov and Vasily Bykov, 340 kilometers (210 miles) southwest of the Russian-controlled city of Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula , the Defense Ministry reported. All three drones were destroyed, the report said.

The governor of the Sevastopol region, Mikhail Razvozhaev, said a drone was shot down about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of the city on Tuesday evening, causing a brush fire.

The attacks on Moscow and Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed from Ukraine in 2014, follow a deadly Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih , Zelenskyy’s hometown in central Ukraine.

Monday’s strike partially destroyed a residential building and killed seven people. Dozens more were wounded.

Russia’s land and sea border with Ukraine spans more than 2,200 kilometers (1,400 miles), meaning that much of the line separating the two countries is not covered by defense radar, which creates an opening for drones.

“Depending on where they are launched from, if there is a way to get through the initial line of defenses, then there will probably be a very poor ability to track them in real time,” said professor Justin Bronk, an expert in military air power and technology at the Royal United Services Institute, a defense think tank in London.

The most advanced defense systems around Moscow “are typically optimized for ballistic missile defense and are looking at targets and objects which are coming in at extremely high speeds and from very high angles,” Bronk said.

Unlike ballistic missiles, drones can fly low and slow. That presents a challenge for radar systems, which scan higher altitudes and filter out slow-moving objects such as birds.

In other developments Tuesday, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, with Iranian-made Shahed drones , according to Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov.

One drone struck a three-story building at an educational institution in the Saltivka district, partially destroying the top two floors of the building, as well as the roof. No one was inside at the time.

Three more drone strikes hit the area of a sports complex in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv. A two-story building in the complex was partially damaged, and a 63-year-old security guard was wounded, according to Syniehubov.

Russian forces shelled the city of Kherson and hit a medical facility, according to regional Gov. Roman Mrochko, killing a doctor and wounding one nurse.

“A young, talented doctor was killed, who was on his first day of work after internship. It was his first working day, which ended without even starting,” Tetiana Karchevych, Kherson region health department head, said at the site of the attack.

Ukraine’s presidential office reported Tuesday morning that at least 12 civilians had been killed in the country over the previous 24 hours, and 104 people injured.

The office reported that Monday’s attack on Kryvyi Rih killed seven people, including a 10-year-old girl, making it one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in recent weeks. Russian rockets struck a residential high-rise building and a university building in the attack, which also wounded 81 people, including seven children.

Hanna Arhirova in Kyiv, Ukraine, and Yuras Karmanau in Berlin, contributed to this report.
