2024 Boat of the Year Best Trimaran: Dragonfly 40 Ultimate

“Classy.” That was the first word that came to mind for Boat of the Year judge Mike Ingham when he stepped aboard the formidable 40-foot trimaran from Dragonfly, an unexpected and welcome late entry to the competition in Annapolis. “It almost feels as if the boat is intentionally understated but overdelivered because once you start looking closer at the details and craftsmanship, it just keeps getting more impressive.”

Builder and company owner Jens Quorning, whose family has been building trimarans in southern Denmark since 1967, says the Dragonfly 40 is the biggest boat they now build and a worthy holder of the flagship title. “Building a boat of this scale is complicated,” he says of the folding trimaran. “It takes three years to develop a new design, and this is for owners looking for a bigger boat, with better performance, capable of more long-distance sailing.”

The result is a powerful trimaran aimed at experienced owners who appreciate the sheer pleasure of racing and cruising on three hulls. This is not your average production multihull. It is a powerful and luxurious sailing machine capable of knocking off fast miles in comfort. Slip down below and you’re immediately immersed in a master class of woodwork and joinery. There are berths for four, including a giant master under the cockpit, plenty of standing headroom, and a comfortable salon and galley arrangement that’s monohull-cozy. “We do not offer a big house on the water,” Quorning tells the judges. “But if you really want a fine and elegant yacht with double-digit sailing, this is what we do.”

For our tests, Dragonfly presented its Ultimate edition, the midrange version. An upscaled Performance model is an all-carbon version with a taller mast. And in the lightest wind of the week, sub-10 knots, the trimaran teased the judges with its potential. Still, in the light stuff, the boat delivered a winning experience.

“It was a dream to sail upwind and downwind, almost effortlessly,” Ingham says. “With the gennaker up, at about 100 degrees true, we were going faster than the wind, and with winch pods on each side of the steering wheel, everything was as ergonomic as you could possibly imagine. The electric winches made it a cinch to furl and unfurl the headsails through the tacks and jibes, and the sails trimmed in perfectly every time.”

The feather-light feel of the helm, Ingham adds, was as smooth as a balanced dinghy. “With tiny movements on the wheel, the boat would immediately respond, but I could also walk away from the helm for a few minutes and the boat would stay right on track. Crazy—I think it steered itself better than I did.”

That’s the trait of a good trimaran, Greg Stewart says. The Dragonfly 40 has a lot of buoyancy in the bows, and while the center hull is substantial, the tall trussed rig and square top mainsail provide plenty of power. “The biggest thing that struck me is how easily accessible everything is,” Stewart says. “Clearly, every detail is painstakingly thought out, and I can’t believe how beautifully built the interior is. It’s top-notch, from the glasswork to the paintwork inside and out. Down below, we were all blown away by the finish.”

There’s no denying the boat is expensive at upward of $1 million, but the test boat had quality race sails, a full electric-winch package, and a long list of high-spec extras. At nearly 15,000 pounds light, it’s a substantial boat—not trailerable, but foldable with Dragonfly’s trademark technique that Corning describes as mimicking parallel rules. The floats are 2 feet longer than the center hull, with buoyancy pushed well forward into the reversed bows, and the center hull is narrow at the waterline before sweeping upward to a high and hard chine. This pronounced hull shape allows for the generous amount of headroom, and high bench seats that flank a long centerline table, which can, of course, drop down to create a double-size berth.

Allen noted that the center hull’s wide side decks provide a secure pathway to the bow, rather than across the trampolines. He was also impressed with the ease of sailing the boat and the comfort belowdecks. “When we were doing 9 knots, I went below and there was silence. It’s comfortable and beautiful. It would be a blast to do some long point-to-point racing on it, doublehanded or with like a crew of four, max.”

Stewart agreed, adding that beyond its noteworthy gunkholing attributes, the engine is well aft on the center hull, allowing it to be motored safely into shallow anchorages. The daggerboard is mechanically raised into the trunk, and the rudder kicks up. “I also think it would be great for a distance race or rally type of event,” Stewart says. “Its performance and versatility are what appeal to me, but the build quality is what really sets it apart.”

Trimarans are ideal boats for Australia’s shoal waters thanks to their shallow draft, large deck space and performance, so the Dragonfly 25 should feel right at home here, writes KEVIN GREEN.

As record breaking trimarans demonstrate these craft have performance as their central premise, so adding some liveability as found here on the Dragonfly 25, creates a fast passage maker with enough space for a small family. The downside can be mooring them but this isn’t a problem with this Danish made trailer-sailer that has a patented folding system which allows them to use a monohull berth, or be legally towed on Australian roads on its breakback trailer. For launching, the rig can be stepped by leveraging a spinnaker pole against the mast, something I’ve done with similar boats including Corsairs and Farriers in the past. Another attraction is their stability, as trimarans’ wide beam and weight centred in the main hull means these smaller designs are more stable than similar catamarans; an important consideration for going offshore. The trimaran concept of the deep central hull with swing keel gives the sensation and performance that monohull sailors will relate to while also having the enhanced stability that the generously proportioned amas create, to reduce the chances of the dreaded pitch-poling; that multhulls can suffer from.

The Dragonfly 25 that launched in 2016 comes in two versions: a Touring one and Sport version with 1.3m taller carbon rig. Our review boat was the latter, imported by The Multihull Group (TMG) for both fun sailors and those keen on the silverware. As I found out when offshore from Sydney, it’s a lively performance trailer-sailer with three berth accommodation and the feel of a big dinghy, so ideal for newbie multihullers. These quality Dragonfly trimarans command a fairly hefty price but what you get is a well made boat that will last and shouldn’t break down on remote voyages along the Australian coasts; something they are ideal for. The range also has a 28, 32 and for 2019, a 40 model. These have succeeded a 35 model that TMG also has in stock and I found to be a sturdy offshore cruiser, ideal for fast off-the-wind passage making along our coasts.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Approaching the mooring, the first thing I noticed was the large length of the amas in relation to the hull, which gives both good lateral and forward stability on the Dragonfly 25. Large curved composite beams connect the structure while elevating the amas up to reduce water-drag. These also retract backwards via lines and jammers to fold the boat into a monohull shape that is stable enough to sit at a marina berth with the mast stepped. This proved a solid structure when deployed in the lumpy seas off Sydney, with no groans or shudders as our three crew pushed the boat hard to windward. Hull finish also looked good, with a large lip over the deck join. The build is hand-laid biaxial glass cloth set in polyester resin around a Divinycell closed-cell foam core; which gives positive buoyancy while the hull is heavily rockered to promote manoeuvrability. The ama wings and structural bulkheads are set in vinylester and heat-cured in an oven to stiffen them.

Sail controls are well laid out, allowing crew to easily unfurl both head sails and adjust the mast rotation.

The deck layout on the Sport version has all sail controls running via jammers to the cabin top with the main track bisecting the cockpit which allows the steerer to sit behind; or more likely to be outboard on the trampolines with twin tiller extensions. A hefty 8:1 block setup ensures there’s plenty of purchase on the main sheet and the track uses the full beam of the hull to create enough scope for useful trimming. A very similar arrangement to a Corsair I’ve enjoyed doing regattas with in the past. The rudder is in a sleeve for easy deployment while alongside on the transom is enough space for the 6hp outboard. Sensibly, there are sturdy liferails on the pushpit and the pulpit of the Dragonfly. Hatch space is also good with man-size ones in each ama (for storage and in case of problems) while the cabin has a rounded one ahead of the mast. The Sport’s rotating mast creates a smooth luff profile while the carbon build reduces weight aloft and improves stiffness. This is greatly aided by sidestays running to the aft quarters of each ama. The sailplan used Elevstrom EPEX laminate sails with slab reefing in the main while up front the Code 0 flew from the bowsprit with self-tacking jib inside it. These are controlled by sizeable Andersen winches and all lines are of a good diameter for handling.

LIVING ABOARD Trailer-sailers give you the freedom of both the open sea and the open road, so I’ve lived in mine while travelling around Europe in the past. Similarly here with the Dragonfly 25, on your way to the Whitsundays you can climb aboard to use its three berths. Up front the porta potta is not the most savoury item in the small cabin but in an emergency will do. Near the companionway is a single burner metho stove and what is most remarkable is the lack of an intruding keel box under the foldable table. Danish designer and company owner Jens Quorning has cleverly offset it into the bench seating so there is floor space and even head room if you perch below the main hatch.

The Touring version can have a boom tent to increase the living space and protect from the searing Aussie sun. I didn’t see any instruments or lights on our review boat but a couple of solar panels with a small battery can run a myriad of LED’s and would not be onerous to fit. For simplicity there is clamp-on LED navigation lights that are standalone as well. For victuals, there is storage, including space under the cockpit for one of those new eskys that keeps ice for several days.

OFFSHORE AT SYDNEY Along with my crew of Jack and Rowan, we sped past North Head in a lovely 12kt northerly breeze which suited the Dragonfly perfectly. Lacking the twin tiller extensions I had to perch in the cockpit but this proved fine enough to enjoy the Dragonfly, with main sheet at hand which allowed me to ease it before each tack as we worked our way towards Manly Beach. The self-tacking jib took care of itself so it was easy sailing, which is good for bother cruisers and racers on the Dragonfly. Hard on the wind at about 40° the windward hull flew a couple of feet off the water while the sharp bow and chines of the hull kept us tracking safely. Switching on my phone Navionics showed us moving at 10kts and the tiller felt balanced and responsive, just like a skiff or racing dinghy. This gave us the confidence for a kite run back to the harbour so we hoisted the asymmetric from its bag, pulled up the lifting keel and skipped along at 13kts across the sparkling seas to inside the Heads where it was easily floated and gybed round the forestay before we did a letterbox drop. Alternatively, in the past I’ve simply dropped them down the forehatch of similar trimarans for quick deployment on the next run. Under power on the way home, I found that operating the 6hp outboard was fairly easily done and it’s well clear of the water when tilted up. Clearly the fun factor was apparent in spades on the Dragonfly 25 and the ease with which this is achieved should give this 25ft trailer-sailer wide appeal. Spotlight: Dragonfly 28 Swing Wing Trimaran

Hailing from quality danish boatbuilder quorning boats, the dragonfly 28 swing wing with foldaway floats takes the trimaran to the next level.

When it comes to multihull sailing craft you either love 'em or loathe them. Traditional monohull sailers will tell you that multihulls don't work to windward well and if one flips it is going to stay inverted. Despite the ambivalence, there is no doubt that multihulls have carved their own niche for those who enjoy the extra speed, stability and shallow draft that comes from having two ore more hulls.

This isn't news, Islanders have been sailing tris for centuries and, in more recent times, adventurers have created massive high-tech trimarans that achieve speeds well above 40kts for circumnavigating the globe in record times. But now there is a new type of trimaran available for the hoi polloi that is no less exciting.

The 8.7m Dragonfly 28 Swing Wing is in prototype phase, but it's based on the 9.2m Dragonfly 920, the 10.68m Dragonfly 35 - the European yacht of the year 2008 in the multihull category - and the 11.96m flagship Dragonfly 1200m centre cockpit ocean cruiser. All these tris are manufactured by Danish boatbuilder Quorning Boats. And they all feature the company's Swing Wing technology where the floats fold in for single-berth mooring.

What's so special about the baby Dragonfly 28? With fold-in floats that require no disassembly and a tare weight of 2200kg, it is trailerable on all Australian roads, has accommodation for five, separate full-beam head, and high-speed performance for racing or touring.

Sydneysider David Styles in association with Sydney dealership Windcraft, the Australian agents for celebrated marques Moody, Fjord and Hanse, imported a Dragonfly 920 to Australia early last year in time for the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. They now plan to import the Dragonfly 28 when it becomes available on 2010.

"The factory hasn't finished the (Dragonfly 28) prototype yet but expect it to be in the water early this year," Styles told Trade-a-Boat .

"The 920 has been in Australia for less than a year but there has been a lot of interest in it around the boat shows. It's a high-end product made by Quorning, which is a very well known and respected brand in Europe. It is a family company that hand make their boats with high-quality engineering, build and fitout.

"Actually, I've had a lot of interest from people in Adelaide, where you have to take out a double berth for trimarans, but with the Swing Wing this means only one berth for a boat like the 920 and therefore a big saving on berthing.

"To give you an example of the beam of  trimaran; a 30ft Dragonfly is wider than my old 48ft catamaran," Styles explains.

The Swing Wing system reduces the Dragonfly 28's 6.5m beam by more than 50 per cent to 2.54m in just a couple of minutes. Thus, it fits comfortably into a conventional yacht berth and won't be banished to swing moorings, the outer arms of marinas and double pens.

Quorning's Swing Wing design has the float struts hinged near the hull and a centre pin pivoting arrangement on top of the floats. Styles said that a wire in the netting between the hull and the floats locks the floats in place via a block and tackle, and tensioned by a winch. Rear braces and forward strops are added to the float struts as failsafe sytstems.

While the Dragonfly 920 is also trailerable, it requires some disassembly, a process said to take four hours. So Quorning Boats designed the Dragonfly 28 as a simpler trailerable version that requires just 30 to 40 minutes demounting time.

Performance wise, it should go almost as well as the Dragonfly 920, which can zip along at 25kts and comfortably cruises in the mid-teens. Quorning expects similar results from the Dragonfly 28 since it is only a couple of feet shorter.

"The 920 is a very well balanced and well behaved boat. It doesn't misbehave like rounding up, and is a nice compromise of out-and-out speed and easy handling.

"A lot of people get the impression that catamarans don't point well, probably because cruising cats don't. They lack a centreboard and are designed mainly for room and entertaining. A good racing cat will point well, and a trimaran can tack and point a well as any monohull," Styles says.

The Dragonfly 28 will be available in either a Touring or Racing version. The former features a 12.1m aluminium mast while the latter has a 13.6m carbon rig and high-tech sails. The accommodation for the 28 will be similar to the 920, with five berths, all two metres in length, a full galley, large companionway, big cockpit, and only differs with the separate head being full beam with access to the forward berths.

Pricing for the Dragonfly 28 is still to be worked out by Quorning, said Styles, but it will be cheaper than the (approximately) $400,000 for the Dragonfly 920.

Bob and Margaret Kennedy have called their Lagoon 420 home for 6 years, “We thought it was terrific. In comparison, our other boat was ‘camping’, but this was ‘home’. We found a little-used boat in very good condition – we lucked out with the perfect boat.”

The Atkinsons love their catamaran. They had the design in mind for 20 years, and even though they weren’t actively looking, when they saw the Lagoon 400, they found the exact layout they had been dreaming of.

Lagoon 42 modified for quadriplegic sailor

‘When you’re in a wheelchair there’s a lot of places you never see or you can’t get to. They’re just not accessible. Yesterday when we were out we sailed past some of those places that I have never seen before,’ Cliff said. For many sailors the freedom of the sea is one of the attractions. For Cliff, it’s life changing.
