We rented the boat on sat dec 3 and since the first contact we found good service, fast responses and flexibility. We were a group of 12 and space was just right. Smaller groups would well enjoy this trip too. The experience started on pier 18 with captain Alvin who managed the boat and timing perfectly to ensures due views and photos during the ride

2 young siblings killed, 15 hurt after car crashes into birthday party in Michigan

A suspected drunken driver killed two young siblings and injured over a dozen people when she drove into a birthday party at a boat club in Michigan on Saturday afternoon, according to the Monroe County Police Department.

At around 3 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene after a 66-year-old woman crashed 25 feet into the building where the party was being held, states the county's sheriff department in a press release posted to Facebook .

The brother, 5, and sister, 8, were attending a birthday party at the Swan Boat Club in Monroe County, which is about 30 miles south of Detroit, according to the release.

The siblings were pronounced dead at the scene, states the sheriff's department.

Fifteen adults and children were injured, the release said. Of those 15, six adults and three children were transported to hospitals in the area by helicopter or ambulance with life-threatening injuries.

USA TODAY contacted the sheriff's department but has not heard back yet.

Who is the driver in the Michigan crash?

The woman, whose identity has not been confirmed, was taken into custody for operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, the release said, adding that she is currently being held at the Monroe County Jail.

"Additional criminal charges will likely be brought against the driver as the investigation proceeds," the release said.

GoFundMe organized for family

Diane Harrington, who said she is the aunt of the siblings, created a GoFundMe to raise money and give the two children a "proper funeral and burial service."

According to the fundraiser, the siblings' mother and older brother were in critical condition at the time it was created.

So far, it has raised around $52,000 of its $100,000 goal. Money left over after funeral expenses will go to the family to help with housing and medical expenses, the GoFundMe page said.

"Yesterday during this tragic event the lives of two young children ... were lost," states a post from the boat club where the party was held. In another, it said it would remain closed until Sunday following the tragedy.

USA TODAY contacted the boat club, but it declined to comment.

Community reels from birthday party tragedy at boat club that left 2 kids dead

A mourner quietly placed a bouquet of cellophane-wrapped flowers on a folding chair Sunday morning outside the Swan Boat Club in Monroe County's Berlin Township, where just the day before police say chaos unfolded when a suspected drunken driver slammed her SUV through a wall.

Inside the building, a young child’s birthday party had been taking place.

In an instant, two children — a brother and sister, ages 5 and 8 — were dead and about a dozen other people, including several other children, were critically injured. Among those hospitalized Sunday were the mother of the two dead children and their older brother.

The 66-year-old woman who was driving the SUV is being held in the Monroe County Jail for suspicion of driving while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony. Police said there could be additional charges as the investigation continues.

"It’s so sad," said Paul Schmidt, 46, who lives next to the club and witnessed the aftermath of the crash. Speaking to a reporter Sunday morning, he noted that the scene was so horrific that even "the cop was throwing up in the yard."

A GoFundMe fundraising account , linked at the club's website , was set up to defray funeral and burial expenses for the children, identified in the account only by their first names as 5-year-old "Zayn" and 8-year-old "Lana" and to help their mother, "Mariah," and older brother, "Jayden," with medical expenses.  

Within hours, tens of thousands of dollars had been raised. By late Sunday evening, donations topped $100,000.

The club — at 6332 Brancheau Road, about 30 minutes southwest of Detroit — was closed Sunday, the result, the private club said on Facebook, of the "terrible accident" with many injuries and much damage.

Schmidt — who had recorded on cell phone videos the SUV driving past his home and the 3 p.m. crash ― said some of the footage was too graphic to share with the public. He estimated the driver, who he said lives near the club, appeared be going 40 mph or more.

The more graphic recordings, which he played for the Free Press, showed a room set up for a party, decorated with colorful banners and balloons. Some of the youngsters ― who, Schmidt said ― appeared to have been lining up for cake.

The crash left a large hole in the wall and the sound of the impact could be heard several houses down the gravel road. It was followed by the screams of children, parents and grandparents. The adults, in a panic, scooped up crying toddlers, trying to scurry to safety.

The two siblings were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The other victims were rushed by ambulances and two medical helicopters for treatment at area hospitals.

Arraignment possible Monday

By Sunday, the hole in the wall, where the SUV smashed through, had been boarded up, but the yellow police caution tape, twisted metal siding, debris and discarded medical supplies, like blue latex gloves and bandages, were strewn about in the dirt.

A bounce house, which had been set up for the party, had been deflated.

The name of the SUV driver was not released. She was taken to the Monroe County Jail, where, authorities said, she is expected to be held until she can be arraigned.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies, one of whom was still investigating the scene Sunday, told the Free Press the name of the suspect or more details of the crash, such as her blood alcohol level, would not be released until after an arraignment, which was unlikely until Monday.

At a late Saturday night press conference, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough’s voice quavered as he spoke to reporters, appearing to be fighting back tears as he read a statement. The vehicle, he said, slammed into the north wall, moving fast enough to go about 25 feet inside the building until it stopped.

It was, the sheriff said, as he described the scene that first responders saw, "extremely chaotic and with high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident." At least 15 people, including adults, were injured.

The sheriff said that nine people, three of them children, were driven by ambulances and airlifted by two medical helicopters to area hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Several other less seriously injured people, the sheriff added, were rushed away by nonemergency vehicles.

Multiple agencies from three counties scrambled to reach the scene and try to provide aid.

Neighbors near the boat club said that before slamming into the birthday celebration, it appeared that the SUV also had hit — or backed into — a small pine tree and a Ford F-150 pickup, damaging the front end, and crashing into it with such force it pushed it back at least a dozen feet, causing it to knock over a wooden fence.

Ed Wedderski, 72, said he and his son, who owns the silver pickup, heard the SUV hit the truck — and then crash through the wall.

Wedderski said he knows the suspect, who is a neighbor and has lived in the area for decades. He said he never had problems with her, calling her "the nicest person," who generally drove slowly.

A drink at Verna's Tavern

Before the suspect apparently crashed into the pickup and club, the sheriff had said Saturday, it's believed she had been at a Newport watering hole, Verna’s Tavern, which deputies briefly closed as part of the crash investigation.

"We went in, we shut the business down," Goodnough said Saturday, when pressed whether the tavern would be facing police scrutiny. "We are in the process of executing a search warrant for information as to the business conducted at that day."

Sunday, the tavern had reopened.

When asked by the Free Press what happened, workers at Verna's on Sunday declined to comment.

Angie Huffman — who said in an email to the Free Press that her mother owns the establishment, and Verna was her great-grandma — confirmed the police suspect was at the eatery at 11 a.m., had a glass of wine and a bowl of soup, adding that she's confident the investigation will show the restaurant is "not at fault."

"She left before noon and was completely sober," Huffman said of the suspect. "We understand the need for an investigation and we are cooperating with the police. We offered to give them anything they needed. The sheriff wanted a search warrant."

Huffman added: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved. Our town will never be the same."

In a sad twist, the area where the tragedy unfolded has long been a place to enjoy life.

The boat club, which sits in the shadow of the DTE Fermi II nuclear plant was started in the 1940s as a place for boating enthusiasts on Swan Creek to meet to play cards, have a beer and kickback, mostly during the hot summer months, has faced its share good and bad times over the years. It is just off Lake Erie.

The club, in its early years thrived, its website suggested.

The club history boasted of hosting "great regattas," "snow mobile races" and "famous chicken dinners," which it still offers. At one time it’s membership even included Michigan’s governor, the late G. Mennen (Soapy) Williams.

In the '70s, the club website said, its membership dropped to less than 50 members.

But since then, the club — which now also offers dockage for more than 125 member boats up to 40 feet long — said its numbers were rebounding and was "sound and prosperous with a card-carrying membership of over 250."

Neighbors, like Schmidt, said he doesn’t know what will happen to the club now.

A community grieves

Through much of Sunday afternoon, many in the Monroe County communities affected by the tragedy were flyspecking the news for more clues to how the deadly crash happened and grieving the loss of the young children.

At the Burger King in Newport, about a couple of miles from the tavern where the suspect may have been, employees shared details with each other about what they knew about the incident — and traded other stories about terrible wrecks.

Alana Laughery, 31, said she was shocked.

"It’s absolutely tragic," she said of the crash, adding that she has a 5-year-old son. "As the day goes on you hear more and more and it just gets worse and worse as more people are affected by this. Even the kids who weren’t physically injured will have to live with these memories of this traumatic event."

She said that she just couldn’t comprehend how the kids and parents must feel.

"I can’t imagine this happening," she said. "I can’t imagine going out for a day to celebrate and something out of your control happens. You think you are in a safe place, surrounded by walls — and the next thing you know, you’re underneath a vehicle."

She said that she could not imagine the horror that families had to go through.

"Did she sit there?" Laughery asked herself, trying to picture the driver after she went through the wall. "Did she move the car? Did anyone attempt to move the car? How did the victims get out? How long were they there? How horrific!"

And, Laughery also asked: "How can we keep this from happening again?"

BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A young brother and sister died and several people were injured, some of them seriously, when a vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver crashed into a young child’s birthday party Saturday at a boat club, a Michigan sheriff said.

An 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother died at the scene in the crash, when a 66-year-old woman drove 25 feet (7.6 meters) into the building about 3 p.m. at the Swan Creek Boat Club in Berlin Township, about 30 miles (48.2 kilometers) south of Detroit, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said.

“The scene was described by the first responders as extremely chaotic, with high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” he said.

Three children and six adults were taken to area hospitals by two helicopters or ambulances with life-threatening injuries, he said. Others injured were given first aid at the scene and some were taken to hospitals by private vehicles.

Goodnough did not identify the woman driving the vehicle but said she was taken into custody and held at the Monroe County Jail suspected of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death. She was cooperating with authorities and likely would face more charges as the investigation continues, he said.

Authorities were notified the woman may have been at a nearby tavern before the incident, Goodnough said, adding they closed the establishment and planned to execute a search warrant there as part of the investigation.

Drunk driver in Michigan birthday party crash that killed young siblings, 4 and 8, charged with murder

An intoxicated driver was charged with murder after crashing into a Michigan business where a child's birthday party was being held and killing two young siblings, authorities announced Tuesday.

Marshella Chidester, 66, hit a building at Swan Boat Club in Berlin Charter Township around 3 p.m. on Saturday. It came to a stop 25 feet inside where the party was taking place, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough told reporters Saturday.

In an arraignment hearing Tuesday, Chidester was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing death and four counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury. Her bond was set at $1.5 million. If convicted, Chidester could be sentenced to up to life in prison.

Zayn Phillips, 4, and his sister, Alanah Phillips, 8, were declared dead at the scene, Goodnough said in an update Monday. The sheriff's office previously reported that Zayn was 5-years-old.

A third sibling survived with “severe injuries," according to Andrew Brodie, the superintendent of Flat Rock Community Schools, an area public school district.

At the arraignment, Bill Colovos, an attorney for Chidester, said she has a history of epileptic seizures in her legs and lost control of the car when she crashed. He also said that his client only had one glass of wine four hours before the crash, according to a search warrant executed at the bar where she allegedly was.

"This is not a monster," Colovos said about his client, adding that she doesn't have a criminal history. "It’s horrible what happened, absolutely horrible. I have two children. It's absolutely horrible. But some things we don’t have control over."

Chidester was seen in court with a cast on her right arm, wearing a striped white and black prison uniform.

Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffery A. Yorkey refuted the claim that Chidester had a seizure during the crash and said that "her blood alcohol level was significantly over the legal limit." He didn't mention what her blood alcohol level was.

"There is no indication, whatsoever, in any of the evidence that we have uncovered in this case, that the defendant suffered from a seizure at the time of this incident," Yorkey said during the hearing.

"She indicated herself that she had some seizure issues and she was on some medication, and that she wasn't supposed to be drinking, but admitted that she had been drinking that day," Yorkey said.

A woman who identified herself as the grandmother of Zayn and Alanah spoke at the arraignment, accusing Chidester of drinking and driving.

"She chose to drink and drive and she took my grandbabies from us," the woman said.

A woman who identified herself as the aunt of the two children said she was at the scene of the crash, and saw her niece and nephew in their final moments.

"They walked into that birthday party having a fun time," she said. "They were sitting at that table, eating, and this woman crashed her car through this building, destroying all of our lives. Not just my family, everyone else that was in that building."

She says her other nephew and her sister, the children's mother, were hurt in the crash and are still fighting for their lives.

"I had to be the one to tell my sister her babies were gone when they removed her ventilator yesterday," the woman said. "She said 'How am I supposed to live without my babies?'"

"No one should ever have to go to a birthday party thinking that they’re gonna die," she said tearfully.

Zayn's birthday was coming up next month, according to Monroe County Undersheriff Joe Hammond.

"We were supposed to be planning a birthday party for Zayn, not a funeral," the child's aunt said.

Approximately 13 others were injured in the crash, Goodnough said on Saturday. Nine of those people, who range in age from 11 to 66-years-old, were hospitalized, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Five remain in critical condition, including an 11-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl, an 18-year-old woman and a 31-year-old woman.

The four other victims, who range in age from 57 to 70, had minor injuries. A 42-year-old man also received treatment on his own for minor injuries.

Chidester's next court appearance is scheduled for April 30.

Former commodore of Monroe Co. boat club held in jail after fatal birthday party crash

Berlin Township — A former commodore of the Swan Boat Club is being held on suspicion of drunken driving in Monroe County and is being arraigned Tuesday as the community continues to mourn two children who were killed by a vehicle that plowed into a birthday party they were attending at the club.

Monroe County Prosecutor Jeffery Yorkey said Tuesday in a statement that an arraignment is being held at 11 a.m. before District Court Judge Christian Horkey for Marshella Chidester of Monroe in connection with the Saturday crash at the Swan Boat Club.

Chidester, 66, is being held in the county jail for allegedly operating under the influence causing death, Monroe County Sheriff’s jail officer Caleb Church said Monday night.

Michigan VINE, an offender custody service provided to victims by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and law enforcement agencies, also showed Chidester in custody in the Monroe County Jail, although the county jail lookup did not show a record for her.

Records from the Secretary of State's Office indicate Chidester was arrested Saturday and that law enforcement confiscated her driver’s license and issued a temporary paper license — known as a 625G permit . Michigan law says a driver’s license must be confiscated if a driver is intoxicated or refuses to perform a substance test. The permit doesn’t restrict driving privileges instantly; it remains in effect until the individual’s case is resolved.

Chidester, a former commodore of the Swan Boat Club, lives about 200 yards from the facility, located where Swan Creek flows into Lake Erie.

The developments came Monday as grief and pain continued to ripple through the Monroe County community, two days after the two children were killed and at least 13 others injured.

On Monday afternoon, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office identified the two children killed as siblings Alanah Phillips, 8, and Zayn Phillips, 4. They died at the scene, the sheriff's department said.

Nine other people were taken to hospitals, including a 31-year-old woman in critical condition; an 11-year-old boy in critical condition; an 18-year-old woman in serious condition; a 16-year-old girl in serious condition; and a 14-year-old boy in serious condition, according to an update from the Sheriff's Office on Monday afternoon.

Three women, ages 66, 62, and 57, all suffered minor injuries. A 42-year-old man also sought treatment on his own for minor injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.

The older brother of the two siblings who were killed in the crash and the mother were listed in critical condition after the crash but have been improving, according to a GoFundMe set up by the children's aunt, Diane Harrington. The News verified the fundraiser as being authentic with GoFundMe.

"The family can not thank everyone enough for the continued support at a time like this," Harrington posted Monday. "(The childrens' brother) had a long surgery yesterday and will have quite the recovery ahead of him but he is awake and in the comfort of his family. Mariah (the childrens' mother) is now awake and also has a long recovery ahead of her."

A makeshift memorial of stuffed animals and crucifixes emerged on Monday outside the boat club in Berlin Township, where the party was held Saturday afternoon. A club employee who did not want to be identified said Monday that the suspected motorist was a volunteer there.

A statement from the boat club's board of directors Monday said they have "no profound words" for the "unimaginable tragedy" — "only feelings."

"Sadness, shock, frustration," said a statement on Facebook. "We are a fellowship of people who band together when tragedy strikes. We need time to process the grief, support each other, support the families directly and indirectly involved, to be in each other’s company. As we all try to move forward with our grief and sadness, we need to give ourselves grace to grieve and know that Swan Boat Club is committed to our members and our community."

The boat club on Brancheau Street was closed Monday. Boards, painted blue, covered the hole where the vehicle hit the building.

A couple in a red Ford F-150 truck pulled up to the site and wordlessly added a stuffed animal to the collection. They declined to comment.

Dave Reaume, the Berlin Township supervisor, said the community's hopes and prayers are with the victims' families. He also extended thanks to the first responders involved.

"I want the residents to take time and heal and take it day by day," he told The News. "You don't think something like this is ever going to happen in your community."

The suspect crashed into the Swan Creek Boat Club in the 6000 block of Brancheau in Berlin Township at about 3 p.m. Saturday, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. Her car landed 25 feet into the building, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said.

Officials received information on Saturday that the suspected driver might have been at Verna’s Tavern earlier on Saturday.

The tavern was open Monday with a few patrons who declined comment. Authorities closed the bar Saturday after the crash and were executing a search warrant to learn more about the day’s business, Goodnough said at the Saturday night press conference.

The tavern's owner wasn't available for comment, an employee said Monday.

'Find my grandbabies': Swan Boat Club survivor recounts tragic crash at birthday party

When Diane Medina first heard the SUV that plowed through a wall of Newport's Swan Boat Club, she thought it was a bomb.

Then she saw the food flying everywhere — hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, chili. And finally, Medina felt it, the force of the vehicle as it hit, dragging her all the way to the other end of the room, and the pain that followed.

Trapped under debris, Medina, 57, said she couldn't breathe. She thought she was paralyzed. She had never seen more blood than the amount coming from her head.

"Somebody's gotta find my grandbabies," Medina managed to repeat, joining the panicked cries of adults as they searched for their young children, all guests at a 3-year-old boy's circus-themed birthday party.

Still recovering from significant injuries, Medina on Saturday recounted the April 20 tragedy to the Free Press during an interview from her Toledo hospital bed, including her gratitude that her grandchildren were not injured in the crash that left two young siblings dead and about a dozen other people hurt.

The details of that afternoon are still hard to comprehend for the Carlton woman, including that her long-time friend — someone she has vacationed with — is now charged with eight crimes as the driver of a vehicle that plowed through a wall and into the boat club and the celebration happening inside.

Just minutes prior to the crash, the group sang "Happy Birthday" and the birthday boy's mother, a friend of Medina, served cake. Medina had just told her three granddaughters, Ella, Evelyn, and Alaina, to go to a bounce house and play. She remembered how excited they were as they ran and the smiles that grew on their faces, painted for the party.

What was once the most beautiful and elaborate children's birthday party Medina had ever seen — it had all the circus classics, including a stilt walker, a balloon maker, a magician — now looked like a tornado had ripped through it, Medina said. Food was strewn everywhere, including the ceilings. Tables and debris scattered. Injured adults and children were lying on the floor.

Next to Medina was a father tending to his teenage daughter who was severely injured from the crash. Medina heard more panicked cries, this time from adults attempting to rescue 4-year-old Zayn Phillips.

Zayn didn’t survive the crash. Neither did his 8-year-old sister, Alanah Phillips.

Medina couldn’t see the siblings' mother, Mariah Dodds, who had been sitting with her three children at the table next to hers. Dodds and her 11-year-old son both survived, but suffered serious injuries and remained hospitalized.

But Medina did see the 66-year-old woman who was pulled from the vehicle: her good friend Marshella Chidester , who authorities allege was intoxicated when she slammed the SUV into the birthday party. Her lawyer, Bill Colovos, has said a medical issue, not alcohol, caused the crash.

Medina watched, in shock, as Chidester was walked to a chair and was asked by the mother of the birthday boy: “What were you thinking?”

Chidester replied she didn’t know, according to Medina.

“She looked around the room and she was sitting down with a blank stare on her face,” Medina said. “She was just staring into la-la land.”

'This isn't the woman I know'

Medina doesn’t like to think about what would have happened to her three granddaughters if she hadn’t told them to play in the bounce house, and although they weren't injured, the trauma lingers.

The children thought their grandmother was dead.

" 'Grandma, I'm too young to see the things that I've seen,' " Medina said Ella, 6, told her the next day.

After Medina was rescued from the rubble, she was unrecognizable, she said. She was rushed to a hospital in nearby Toledo, where she was being treated for three breaks in her pelvis, a broken nose, internal bleeding and a head injury.

A GoFundMe account was created to help support Medina's recovery. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office confirmed with the Free Press that Medina was among those injured. A hospital spokesperson confirmed Medina was being treated and is in serious condition.

Medina was told by her doctors that she can't walk for at least eight weeks. Loved ones have shown support during visits to her at the hospital, and her grandchildren have been dancing for Medina on video calls.

But she's still angry. Angry at Chidester.

"This isn't the woman I know," Medina said.

They met when Medina joined the boat club 10 years ago. Medina said Chidester is a devoted Christian who taught bible school to kids, someone who Medina had vacationed with in Tennessee.

"The girl would not hurt a fly. She's the most loving, caring, loyal, sweetest," Medina said.

The eight criminal charges Chidester faces include two counts of second-degree murder and another two counts of driving while intoxicated causing death. She was released from Monroe County Jail earlier this past week after posting a $1.5 million bond via a surety company.

Colovos has said his client suffers from neuropathy and has "epileptic type seizures" in her legs. He said she had only one glass of wine that day. He has said Chidester "blacked out" from a seizure when her SUV crashed into the boat club and is remorseful.

Colovos is waiting on a medical report that would determine his client's blood alcohol level around the time of the crash. Monroe County Prosecutor Jeffery Yorkey has said that a preliminary alcohol breath test was "significantly over the legal limit" but he was not specific.

"I’m asking everyone to please be patient and don’t rush to judgment until all the evidence and the blood test results are received," Colovos said Saturday in a statement.

"My client is beyond devastated and prays for the children and all families affected."

Medina acknowledged that her friend had medical issues. In the last six months, she said, she witnessed Chidester drinking more than usual.

She doesn't think the crash was intentional. But she hasn't forgiven her friend, either.

"I was taught never to hate somebody. That's not in my vocabulary. I don't hate her. I'm just angry with what she has taken away from me," which is nothing compared to what Chidester has taken away from Dodds, Medina said.

"But I can't wait to see her in court ... I want her to see what she did to me. I want her to see what she did to her friend."
