Her hull, decks, bright work, paint, cushions and enclosure are all in very nice condition. She has a nice electronics package including a color screen Garmin chart plotter. She also has an auto-pilot and radar that are in good working order.

The interior of the boat also stands very tall. All the woodwork has been redone and looks like new. Her carpet and soft goods are also in like-new condition.

A large boat at 45 feet, she has a very spacious salon with lots of natural lighting. Down to port is a built in dinette with full galley to starboard. Forward in the bow area is a sink to starboard with a Vacuflush head to port. Upper and lower bunks are found all the way forward in the bow.

Acquired by her current owner in 2008, NYMPH underwent a meticulous restoration spanning 8 years. 1913 MATTHEWS 75

NYMPH HIGHLIGHTS

Restoration.

Over the course of her restoration, all of Nymph’s original hardware was carefully removed, scrupulously restored, and reinstalled. Her etched glass doors, Tiffany and Co. light fixtures, Herreshoff deck hardware, Perko search light, original cabinetry hardware, and Beaver Iron cook stove are just a few of her timeless treasures to be preserved.

Nymph’s wooden planked hull was completely rebuilt in composite materials adding strength, longevity, and providing years of trouble free ownership for her next heritor. Able to be hauled with a modern travel lift, this ensures all maintenance can be easily performed without the necessity of a railway or dry dock. Her FRP sheathing offers all of the benefits of modern construction methods while her wooden substrate preserves the seakeeping qualities of a traditionally planked hull.

EXTERIOR SPACES

When stepping aboard the main deck of Nymph, one is transported back in time. Her period correct hardware, vintage lighting overhead, hi-gloss deck underfoot, and acres of mahogany offer a feel that can only be understood once experienced. Stand at her helm and advance the telegraph style throttle and you will be transported to a bygone era. Her fantail is opened and spacious with the best seats in the house.

INTERIOR SPACES

Upon venturing below deck, you are greeted with a warmth and coziness not found aboard modern day vessels. Tufted leather settee’s, rich mahogany, and lush carpet are a feast for the senses. The sensations experienced by her guests are that of another period in time. Her staterooms are cozy yet comfortable, offering more accomodation than one would imagine. Her clawfoot tub and ornate ceramic sinks are indicitive of the fact that she is truly something special.

Nymph’s Galley, though 110 years old, is as functional as it is beautiful. Boasting etched glass cabinet doors, checkered tile flooring, ample storage, an iron Beaver cook stove, and period correct ice box with modern refrigeration, cooking aboard is a true pleasure. Her galley flows seamlessly into the main salon where guests can take meals in exquisite comfort.

ENGINE ROOM

Descending into Nymph’s engine room, you are greeted with a feeling of a venerable space and a plethora of modern conveniences. Her centrally located main engine offers unprecedented access, while electrical service is upgraded and thoughtfully laid out with modern systems throughout. A Seakeeper 5 ensures a comfortable ride while underway. This open space offers outstanding ventilation and ample working space for the engineer. Not only is Nymph’s engine room grand, it is superior to any modern yacht you will find plying the waters today.

History of the Matthews Company

matthews yachtfish

Matthews’ endeavors were so successful that by 1906 he moved his company, at the invitation and with the financial support of the local businessmen, to Port Clinton, Ohio, where there was deep-water and East Coast access necessary to the building and marketing of larger boats. The company, now called The Matthews Company, continued to prosper, building nothing but quality boats that became world-renowned. In 1909, Matthews received a government contract to build utility boats for the U.S. Army; “Mahapa”, an 85′ cruiser, was built in 1910 for H. A. Parsons of Cleveland. In 1912, W. E. Scripps, Commodore of the Detroit Motor boat Club and President of Scripps Motor Company, contracted with Matthews for a 35′ LOA, 10′ beam vessel capable of crossing the Atlantic under gasoline power. The boat was an over-sized lifeboat, called a “trans-Atlantic liner” by Rudder, 1912. Captained by Thomas Fleming Day, editor of Rudder, the “Detroit” ran to New Rochelle, New York, where she began the cruise that would carry her over 4,000 miles in 21 days to Ireland, thence to St. Petersburg, Russia. Powered with a 16 horse Scripps engine and carrying a crew of three, she was the smallest gasoline powered vessel to cross the Atlantic.

The company was successful with individual, business, and government contracts, building 50′ passenger boats for an amusement park, rum chasers (speedboats) for the U.S. Government, and the 95′ cruiser “Oswichee” for Mr. Joseph Williams of Cleveland. In spite of active business, Scott J. Matthews was concerned that economic slumps would again affect steady employment for his men. In 1924 he introduced a 38′ “special”, the first stock built boat in the industry. Past work had been entirely by individual contract and design; the new Matthews “38” would be standardized, allowing him to keep his employees busy during slack periods and preventing layoffs. The last custom boat ever built was the 99′ “Irwin”, completed in 1925, and delivered by water to its New York City owner. The stock built line included a 46 foot introduced in 1926, a 32′ speed cruiser in 1928, and a 25′ sailboat in 1934. By 1942, Matthews had again turned to war production, primarily building 36′ and 38′ landing crafts. Matthews 38’s were built for patrol boats, many under the Lend-Lease Plan.

These 5 Mathews Bows Changed Archery Hunting

Any discussion about iconic brands in the bowhunting world has to include Mathews. What Matt McPherson built over the past 32 years is the stuff of legend.

Mathews bows have helped lead the way in the advancement of archery technology. No question. But there are several bow manufacturers who are in that same stable.

What makes Mathews different is that they’ve built a brand that’s bigger than the bows. Through a combination of building quality bows, saturating all forms of media with eye-catching marketing, and partnering with big names in the outdoors—Lee and Tiffany Lakosky, Levi Morgan, Mark and Terry Drury, to name a few—Mathews has molded its brand into a way of life. The brand has an almost cultish following, that’s always eager to see the latest and greatest offering.

And while Mathews typically doesn’t disappoint, it’s not like they never disappoint. I mean, has there ever been a Mathews grip that’s been universally loved?

Seriously. I want to know.

And if promised immunity, would anyone really admit liking the TX-5?

I’ve worked at Lancaster Archery Supply , one of the biggest archery-only retailers in the world, for the past decade. I know that every bow manufacturer has their loyal fans. But the Mathews crowd takes that loyalty to a different level.

When QAD first offered two versions of their wildly popular Ultrarest—one branded simply as QAD, and the other bearing the Mathews logo—we could hardly sell a Mathews bow without the Mathews rest, even though it was priced higher than the same rest without the Mathews logo on it. Functionally, it was the exact same. Didn’t matter.

“I want the Mathews one.”

As the Mathews-verse eagerly awaits the release of the 2024 hunting lineup, it seemed timely to take a look back at the company’s offerings from the past 15 years or so, to find the cream that rose to the top. Certainly, such a discussion will spark debate within the ravenous Mathews fan base. Everyone has reasons why the Z7 Xtreme is better than the No Cam HTX and vice versa.

Well, I’ve shot nearly every Mathews bow put out over the past 15 years. And so here are my top 5 favorite Mathews bows from that period. I didn’t rank them according to how I like them now. I ranked them based on how much I liked them when they hit the market. How much they blew me away once I started slinging arrows through them.

The Best Mathews Bows of Recent History

Beyond just taking a stroll with me down memory lane I hope you use my list if you’re searching for a bow on the used market. In good condition, any of these bows will still be plenty capable today.

The 2023 Phase 4 33 is the quietest, most stable and accurate Mathews hunting bow I’ve ever shot. The massive riser makes it hold like a dream. That’s why 3D pros including Jeff Hopkins and Levi Morgan shot it in competitions in 2023. It aims that good.

We’ve never seen anything like the rubber strips separating each of the eight limbs on the Phase 4 bows. Mathews calls it Resistance Phase Damping. I don’t care what they call it. This bow is almost silent.

I won’t take shots like this at game animals, but the Phase 4 33 is the first Mathews hunting bow I’ll shoot regularly at 100 yards on the practice range and fully expect to hit what I’m aiming at. The pin just sits there.

A whisper quiet hunting bow that shoots good enough for tournament use? Yeah. That’s why it’s my top pick. Without a doubt, it’s one of the best compound bows of 2023.

The 2010 Z7 just looked different than any other Mathews I’d ever shot. The honeycombed riser—Grid Lock, in Mathews-speak—and parallel limbs screamed “new and innovative.” Once I shot it, well, I loved it.

In the Mathews’ Solo Cam heyday, the Z7 was the apex predator. It had the smoothness of all the solo cam bows. But it also had speed and minimal hand shock. The riser was big, so it held nice, but with all those honeycombed cutouts, it was pretty light. With all that performance, the Mathews Z7 won Outdoor Life’s 2010 Bow Test.

Mathews knew they smacked a homerun with the Z7. That’s why they kept recirculating it for seven years afterward in various iterations – Z7 Xtreme, Z7 Xtreme Tactical, Z7 Magnum, eZ7, Z9, Z2, Z3.

The 2019 Traverse is the best Mathews bow you’ve never heard of (unless you’re a serious Mathews fan, then you know all about the Traverse). But when it was launched, it was the annoying little brother to the star athlete, favorite son Vertix, which got the lion’s share of the year’s marketing budget. Vertix launched the Mathews Switchweight mod system, which allows you to change the bow’s draw weight range by changing mods on the cam, as opposed to getting new limbs. The Traverse didn’t have that.

Meanwhile, bowhunters like me, who got their hands on the Traverse, were blown away by its performance. They’re still not easy to find for sale in the secondary market. Those who own them, typically don’t part with them.

The Traverse was the hunting bow Mathews built to appease those of us who loved the Halon, but thought, “Man, I wish it was just a little bit longer.” Essentially, it’s a 33-inch Halon 7.

READ NEXT: Best Compound Bows for the Money

I think I liked the 2014 Creed so much because it was like an updated Z7. It had that Grid Lock riser, single cam and parallel limbs just like the Z7. But the Creed was the first Mathews bow to feature something Mathews fans thought we’d never see in a Mathews bow—split limbs instead of solid limbs.

The efficiency gains afforded by the split limbs were apparent, and the Creed drew smoothly, held nicely at full draw, and cast virtually no hand shock or noise at the shot. It was one of the bows in the Mathews line that caused you to stop and say, “Wait a minute. This one’s different, in a good way.”

Every flagship bow Mathews has put out since the 2016 Halon 6, has the Halon DNA at its core (read next: Mathews V3X Review ). The Halon introduced us to the Crosscentric cam system, to long, bridged risers and to short, wide limbs. All of these innovations generated a new level of power, comfort, and accuracy.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t intimidated by the giant cams (at least they were considered giant at the time) powering the Halon when I first laid eyes on them. But once I drew the bow, and those big cams rolled over like butter, I was hooked. The Halon 6 was a quiet, screaming fast speed bow that didn’t draw or sound like the typical speed bow, which is to say that it was a pleasure to shoot.

Mathews Bows Q&A

All Mathews bows are made in Sparta, Wisconsin.

For the past few years, Mathews has announced its lineup of new hunting bows in November.

Final Thoughts on Mathews Bows

So that’s it. That’s my list of the five best Mathews bows of the last 15 years. Some will agree. Some will disagree. The great thing about the Mathews-verse is there is no shortage of opinions on which Mathews is “the best.” I have no doubt the 2024 offering will have some new and cool and unique feature. Regardless, as long as it’s got a sticker that says “Mathews,” it’ll sell.

Putin taunts the West with 'first ever' visit to remote ice-covered 'frontier region' just 55 miles from the US - as Zelensky tries to drum up war support in Lithuania

  • Chukotka is Russia's easternmost region, sharing a maritime border with Alaska

President Vladimir Putin  has arrived for his first-ever presidential visit to Chukotka in Russia 's Far East - just 55 miles from the US state of Alaska .

Putin arrived in Anadyr, the local capital of the Chukotka region this morning after flying from Moscow some nine time zones away.

Chukotka is the easternmost region of Russia, with a maritime border on the Bering Strait with Alaska.

The Russian president was met in Anadyr by a motorcade and was whisked away in a limousine amid frigid temperatures of -28C.

It's the closest he has come to US soil since he met with President  Barack Obama in New York City in 2015.

Chukotka is so close to Alaska that Roman Abramovich - the ex-Chelsea FC owner - was reported to fly to Anchorage in Alaska for lunch when he was the governor of the region from 2001 - 2008.

Putin's visit comes at a time when US-Russian relations are at their lowest ebb in decades amid the war in Ukraine and a growing East-West divide.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today landed in Lithuania as part of an unannounced trip to the Baltic states to drum up more support for the conflict.

Global war for control of the ARCTIC: Climate change is unlocking untapped natural resources, new trade routes... and a new international conflict that RUSSIA is already winning

The three Baltic states - all former Soviet republics which are now EU and NATO members - are among Ukraine's staunchest allies.

'Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are our reliable friends and principled partners. Today, I arrived in Vilnius before going to Tallinn and Riga,' Zelensky said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

'Security, EU and NATO integration, cooperation on electronic warfare and drones, and further coordination of European support are all on the agenda,' he said.

The Baltic tour marks Zelensky's first official trip abroad this year.

In Lithuania, a key donor to Ukraine, Zelensky said he will hold talks with the president, prime minister and the speaker of parliament, and meet with the Ukrainian community.

The visit comes as other Kyiv allies waver on fresh aid, nearly two years into Russia's invasion.

Ukraine has come under intense Russian shelling in recent weeks, retaliating with strikes on Russia's border city of Belgorod.

Zelensky has urged allies to keep military support flowing and held in-person talks with officials from the United States, Germany and Norway last month.

But an EU aid package worth 50 billion euros ($55 billion) has been stuck in Brussels following a veto by Hungary, while the US Congress remains divided on sending additional aid to Ukraine.

Following his trip to Chukotka, Putin is expected to visit several regions in the Russian Far East to boost his re-election campaign amid the war with Ukraine, which has seen more than 300,000 Russians killed or maimed.

He is due to stand in March, seeking another six years in the Kremlin.

The only Kremlin leader ever to travel to Chukotka previously was Dmitry Medvedev in 2008.

Putin's trip sees him escape a wave of ugly protests in western Russia over hundreds of thousands of people scraping by in freezing conditions due to breakdowns in communal heating supplies.

In Elektrostal, Moscow region, desperate residents say they have had no communal heating - which Russians routinely expect the state to supply usually through piped hot water - for the entire winter so far.

'We have been without heating since [9 October],' one resident said in a video circulating on Telegram.

'It is impossible to be in our homes… We are freezing! We are freezing! We are freezing!' they said.
