Super-yacht Tranquility at sea

Superyacht linked to Jho Low and 1MDB scandal for sale again, for an extra $74m

The Tranquility, seized by authorities and sold for a ‘bargain’ $126m in April, is back on market after stint as celebrity hangout

A superyacht once owned by Jho Low, a fugitive at the centre of Malaysia’s 1MDB financial scandal , has been put back on the market after a few months as a celebrity party venue.

The vessel, now named Tranquility, is being sold for US$200m, an increase of more than $70m on its previous price tag. It is currently owned by the Genting Group, a Malaysian conglomerate with business interests in real estate, hospitality, plantations and energy supply.

The firm bought the 91.5-metre yacht from the Malaysian government for $126m , which was about half its original purchase price, after it was seized by Indonesian authorities off the coast of Bali in 2018.

Previously named Equanimity, the yacht was owned by Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, 37, better known as Jho Low. He has been accused of masterminding the looting hundreds of millions of dollars from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB . Low is in hiding, believed by many to be in China. He has previously said that he has not broken any laws.

Former prime minister Najib Razak, 66, is currently on trial in Kuala Lumpur for 1MDB-related charges.

Tranquility typifies Low’s super-luxury, celebrity-packed lifestyle . It features a gym, massage room, grand piano, swimming pool, sauna and “beach club” section for socialising. Winch Design, an exclusive British firm, designed the interiors.

Before moving to make a sale profit on the vessel, Genting rented it to super-rich clients at a cost of $1.2m a week. US celebrity Kylie Jenner hired it for her birthday celebrations.

Before going into hiding, Low used his wealth to move in similar circles to the reality TV star. He became friends with Paris Hilton and mixed with Hollywood’s film industry elite. In 2018, the producers of Martin Scorsese’s hit film The Wolf of Wall Street paid back $60m to the US government after allegations the film was funded with money stolen from 1MDB.

In April this year, when Genting acquired the yacht, Low spoke through his publicist of his anger at its “bargain-basement” $126m sale price.

Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck and the 280-foot superyacht "Valerie"

The tabloids have been on fire this week with revelations that superstar Jennifer Lopez has been celebrating her 52nd birthday in style, cruising the Mediterranean with on-again beau, actor Ben Affleck, aboard a stunning superyacht. J.Lo’s Instagram photos show the reunited Bennifer in top form.

The power couple has also been snapped hanging out in tony Saint-Tropez, enjoying retail therapy in Monaco and strolling the romantic island of Capri, all from their private getaway, the 280-foot Lürssen-built Valerie .

Until now, little has been known about the 280-foot superyacht. But after 10 years of being the private retreat of a Ukrainian billionaire, Valerie is now on the market for about $130 million, or €110 million.

Until a buyer is found, it’s available for rent through Monaco-based Dynamiq Sales & Charter–which is also handling the sale–at a whopping $1.12 million a week. J.Lo is believed to have been the first to have booked.

The superyacht’s sleek, timeless lines are from the drawing board of Norwegian naval starchitect Espen Øino. He’s responsible for such superyacht icons as the 426-foot Flying Fox , the late Paul Allen’s 413-foot Octopus , and soon to be the world’s largest superyacht, the 600-foot REV Ocean.

“ Valerie is still considered by many to be one of the most beautiful boats we have done with Lürssen,” Monaco-based Øino told Robb Report.

With an impressive volume of 2,755 gross tonnes, the yacht has no shortage of interior space, with accommodations for 17 guests in nine cabins, including a truly hedonistic master suite. When Lopez and Affleck were aboard, they were pampered by Valerie’s crew of 27.

One of the multitude of design highlights of the yacht is its huge, private upper deck. Up top, there’s a 20-foot swimming pool, the inevitable hot tub, and a football field of lounge pads.

Steps away, protected from prying eyes and paparazzi lenses by towering sides, is a dining table for 10, complete with musical fountains that light up at night.

For additional sunning and dipping, Valerie’s vast forward deck, with a touch-and-go helipad big enough to land a Eurocopter EC130 or Bell 407, has another pool and a semi-circle of sunpads. The deck can also double as a golf driving range.

The sumptuous interior is the work of London-based designers Pascale Reymond and Andrew Langton, of Reymond Langton Design. They specified 7.5-foot-high ceilings and walls of full-height windows to provide full-on sea views.

The living areas have a formal, Art Deco look and feel, which contrast with the more-relaxed outdoor spaces. The fine detailing inside includes soft leather wall panels—even the elevator is leather-lined—wood flooring incorporating an intricate inlay, and the pièce de résistance: real butterflies set into brass detailing.

An equally jaw-dropping feature of the lounge is the floating Schimmel Pegasus grand piano, originally conceived by the eccentric German industrial designer Luigi Colani. The instrument costs around $100,000.

One other headline feature, especially for the fitness-focused Lopez, is Valerie’s wellness suite. It comes with a steam room and Hamman, and state-of-the-art Italian-made Technogym fitness equipment. After a hard workout, close by is a starlight-ceilinged massage room and beauty salon.

Instead of a stuffy formal dining room inside, the owner specified an alfresco dining area on the main deck just outside the salon. There’s seating for 14 around the inlaid, mirror-varnished oval table, with panoramic views over the aft deck.

To make sure the yacht can sprint from Monaco to Capri in time for sunrise, the steel-hulled Valerie is powered by twin 2,700 hp MTU V-16 engines sitting in a cavernous, double-height engine room. They deliver a top speed of 20 mph, though cruising at a more relaxed 14 mph, she has an easy transatlantic range of 6,000 nautical miles.

With a major refit in 2019 that saw fresh, bright-white hull paint and a comprehensive systems overhaul, plus a 10-year Lloyds survey completed in May this year, Valerie is reckoned to be as good as new.

“This is a rare opportunity for someone to acquire one of the most impressive and impeccably maintained superyachts on the market, without waiting years for a new construction,” Maria Dobroserdova, Dynamiq Sales & Charter broker tells Robb Report .

By the end of this week, maybe J.Lo and Ben might end-up loving the yacht so much they’ll write a check.

Former Superyacht of Fugitive Businessman Jho Low Hits the Market

The 300-foot “tranquility” comes with a large spa suite, piano and helipad, the superyacht was completed in 2014., newsletter sign-up, week in review.

Shares the stories you may have missed from the world of luxury real estate

The former superyacht of fugitive Malaysian financier Jho Low is back up for sale, according to a new listing.

“Tranquility,” a luxurious 300-foot vessel formerly known as “Equanimity,” and stocked with lavish amenities, including a helipad, elevator, spa wing and full chef’s kitchen, hit the market again late last month with brokerage Camper & Nicholsons.

Malaysian and U.S. authorities have accused Mr. Low of engineering an international money-laundering scheme that siphoned billions of dollars from a Malaysian government investment fund, known as 1MDB. They charge that he used his ill-gotten gains to fund a lavish lifestyle, including homes in New York City and Los Angeles, a private jet and this award-winning superyacht.

This is the second time the yacht has been up for sale since Malaysian authorities seized it from Mr. Low. In April, the Malaysian government announced that it sold the vessel to hospitality conglomerate Genting Group for US$126 million, according to a media release at the time.

Since then, Genting, which operates luxury yacht charters, has been renting the “Tranquility” out to well-heeled clients to the tune of €1.1 million (US$1.23 million) per week—including model Kylie Jenner, who posted pictures on social media of herself and her entourage jumping from the top deck into the sea below. Genting Group could not immediately be reached for comment.

Genting is now reportedly asking $200 million for the vessel, according to Business Insider. Mansion Global could not independently confirm the price, as an email to the brokerage was not immediately returned.

Exceedingly spacious, the yacht has enough rooms to accommodate 26 guests plus 31 crew. Boat-builder Oceanco originally delivered the superyacht in 2014 to a flurry of awards and accolades, including “Finest New Yacht of the 2014 Monaco Yacht Show.”

The interiors features polished marble floors and oak finishes, according to the listing with Camper & Nicholsons. There’s a working see-through piano in the upper saloon, a formal dining room and a fully equipped gym.

A spa suite includes a sauna, hammam, experiential showers—including a mini plunge pool—massage room and beauty salon, the listing says.

The maze-like master suite on the upper deck has dual dressing rooms and an adjoining office with its own terrace and plunge pool.

The infamous superyacht linked to the 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, formerly known as Equanimity, appears to be listed for sale on the British publication Boat International website.

Now known as Tranquility, the sale price of the superyacht appears unlisted though it was sold to casino operator Genting Malaysia Bhd for RM520.8 million in April 2019 – half its original purchase price.

The 91.5-metre yacht had been in the centre of the 1MDB scandal, allegedly bought using stolen funds by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho (aka Jho Low) who was known for his lavish lifestyle and partying with Hollywood stars.

jo lo yacht

According to US court documents, 1MDB officials allegedly diverted more than US$850 million (RM 3.6 billion) to private entities incorporated in the Seychelles and British Virgin Islands. The funds were used to purchase Tranquility (then known as Equanimity) at RM1.03 billion for “Low’s personal benefit”, as well as a private jet, Picasso paintings, jewellery and real estate.

The luxury yacht built in 2014 was a mirror of Jho Low’s indulgent lifestyle as it comes equipped with dazzling amenities such as a helipad, Turkish Bath, on deck jacuzzi, sauna, swimming pool, cinema, beauty salon, and 22 luxurious rooms.

Following the request of the US Department of Justice which was investigating money laundering involving 1MDB, Indonesian authorities seized the yacht in Bali in February 2018. It was later returned to Malaysia which put the yacht up for auction.

Following its sale to Genting via a private deal, an incensed Jho Low released a statement via his publicist criticizing the government for accepting the “bargain-basement sale price”.

Genting then put the yacht up for charter and it was even rented by Kylie Jenner for her 22nd birthday bash in August 2019.

However, it seems that the yacht didn’t attract that much star power as it was put back up on sale in October 2019 with a price tag of US$ 200 million (RM840 million).

Tranquility sails under the flag of the Cayman Islands and is currently docked at Singapore.

A Yacht, a Monet, a See-Through Piano: The U.S. Collects on a Fugitive’s Shopping Spree

jo lo yacht

By Elizabeth A. Harris and Alexandra Stevenson

  • Dec. 9, 2018

The van Gogh and the Monet are safely in storage in Switzerland. The Oscar that once belonged to Marlon Brando is in a federal warehouse in Texas. Those were easy enough to corral.

But when the $250 million yacht was finally captured in Bali, the United States government couldn’t let it bob in the water unattended, so it had to pay for a crew. The $35 million Bombardier jet has been grounded, but it needed an engine test costing up to $25,000.

And no one is quite sure what to do with the see-through grand piano now sitting in a supermodel’s Malibu home. It won’t fit through the door.

All of the items, and many more, had been bought by a flamboyant Malaysian financier named Jho Low , who prosecutors say helped siphon billions of dollars from a Malaysian government investment fund, then went on a colossal spending spree. It is one of the largest international kleptocracy cases the United States has ever pursued.

It is so expansive that just tracking down, retrieving and maintaining the loot has become a complex multinational operation in itself.

Court documents and interviews describe a recovery effort that involves half a dozen federal agencies, a bevy of contractors and investigators in countries including Switzerland, Luxembourg and Malaysia.

Its targets include more than a dozen properties in New York, California and London, including a $31 million condominium in the Time Warner Center in Manhattan, the Viceroy L’Ermitage Beverly Hills hotel and a $17.5 million mansion in Beverly Hills that came with a gold-tipped pyramid floating in a reflecting pool.

The process has been slowed because of the pending criminal case, which itself is lagging because Mr. Low, 37, is a fugitive believed to be hiding in China. There are also thorny legal issues because Mr. Low and some of the other defendants have denied wrongdoing and are challenging the forfeitures.

Several of the items are owned by trusts, and Mr. Low “does not consider it proper for any government to seize property belonging to the trusts or himself,” said Robin Rathmell, Mr. Low’s lawyer.

The United States took the lead in the investigation because it has been cracking down on the flow of illegal money through the American financial system, and because until a few months ago, Malaysia’s own government was being run by the very people accused of ripping it off.

The fund at the center of the investigation, called the 1Malaysia Development Berhad fund or 1MDB, was supposed to benefit ordinary Malaysians. It raised billions of dollars from banks and borrowed from investors, ostensibly to finance projects like a joint venture with a Saudi oil company and the purchase of power plants.

But prosecutors say 1MDB became a “massive, brazen and blatant” money-laundering scheme, in which billions were diverted into the bank accounts of senior officials, including the former prime minister Najib Razak, his family and associates and Mr. Low.

The scandal led to the ouster of Mr. Najib. It also has ensnarled Goldman Sachs , which helped 1MDB raise money; a Justice Department employee who pleaded guilty to helping Mr. Low funnel money into the United States; and Elliott Broidy , a top fund-raiser for President Trump who was paid to lobby the administration to stop the investigation. (Mr. Broidy is not accused of any crime.)

Laundering the money, prosecutors say, involved a complex network of opaque bank accounts and shell companies registered in exotic locations like the British Virgin Islands.

But the idea was simple: Use 1MDB as a vehicle to draw in big money.

And then spend it.

Some $200 million was used to buy artwork. There was a 22-carat pink diamond necklace worth $27.3 million, said to have been given to Mr. Najib’s wife. (Her lawyers say that while she saw the necklace, which has gone missing, she never actually received it.)

Tens of millions of dollars went toward financing Hollywood films including “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Daddy’s Home” through a production studio called Red Granite Pictures, which was owned by Riza Aziz, Mr. Najib’s stepson. Red Granite has settled with the government for $60 million without admitting wrongdoing.

A quarter billion was spent on a custom-built mega-yacht with a movie theater, helicopter pad and enough space for dozens of crew members. Indonesian authorities said the boat’s transponder was turned off at times, making it difficult for the F.B.I. to track it, but the yacht, called the Equanimity, was finally seized in Bali this year. The United States then staffed it with a crew until it was turned over to Malaysia’s custody.

Mr. Low, who had a self-proclaimed taste for the very finest things, also used some of the money to lavish gifts on celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and the Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr, prosecutors say.

In 2014, Mr. Low bought the clear-acrylic grand piano from Crystal Music Company in the Netherlands and had it delivered to Ms. Kerr in Malibu. Peter Tol, the company’s founder, declined to discuss the price but said that his custom pieces now cost from $170,000 to upward of $1 million.

It has been a centerpiece of Ms. Kerr’s home. She has been photographed lounging on its lid in a Giorgio Armani gown and has been recorded tapping out a simple song called “The Flea Waltz.”

Mark Fabiani, a lawyer for Ms. Kerr, said she is happy to relinquish the piano. But it’s not clear that it is worth the effort to get it out.

“If you move it, you might damage it, and then you have to restore it,” said Michael Case, the asset forfeiture coordinator for the United States Marshals Service in Manhattan, speaking generally about such operations.

This extraction would be especially complicated.

When Mr. Tol delivered the piano, he was horrified to learn it would be left on an outdoor deck, protected only by an overhang.

“This was hurting my soul very much,” he said. “I strongly advised them to close that area.”

Ms. Kerr followed his advice. But those new walls are a problem for the government, which believes it would have to do some demolition to get the piano out, according to two people with knowledge of the investigation who were not authorized to speak publicly. Then a very expensive house would have to be repaired.

So for now, the piano stays. Other tokens of Mr. Low’s esteem have been easier to retrieve. Ms. Kerr handed over a substantial amount of jewelry, including an 11.71-carat heart-shaped diamond and a pair of 11-carat diamond earrings.

Mr. DiCaprio, too, has relinquished his gifts, including Picasso’s “ Nature Morte au Crâne de Taureau ” (Still Life With Bull’s Head) and a collage called “Redman One” by Jean-Michel Basquiat, both of which he had stored in Switzerland.

He also gave up Brando’s 1954 Oscar for “On the Waterfront.” According to “ Billion Dollar Whale ,” a book about Mr. Low by two Wall Street Journal reporters, the statue had disappeared from Mr. Brando’s Hollywood home; Mr. Low bought it for $600,000 from a film memorabilia dealer. Unfortunately for the government, when any post-1950 Oscar is put up for sale, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has the right to buy it for $1, a spokeswoman for the academy said.

In Malaysia itself, the haul has been immense. Just days after Mr. Najib was voted out, the police raided six residences connected to him. They seized 35 bags of cash in 26 currencies, and it took 22 officers three days to determine their full value — about $30 million. There were bags of gold (25), Hermes handbags (272) and watches (423). Everything is being stored in Kuala Lumpur at the Malaysian central bank.

“The numbers were just too huge for us to do the accounting on the premises,” said Amar Singh, who led the asset seizures for the Royal Malaysian Police.

Mr. Najib has denied wrongdoing, and Farhan Shafee, a member of his legal team, said, “As far as we can see and as far as the documents provided show, the assets that were seized have nothing to do with the charges that have been brought.”

As for Mr. Tol, the piano maker, he said he felt terrible if he had unwittingly accepted money “destined for the normal people of Malaysia.”

“I don’t like it,” he said. “It is not my way of life.”

Vickey Barron, a real estate broker who sold a $51 million penthouse in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood to another man later implicated in the 1MDB case, Khadem al-Qubaisi, recalled the transaction as a blur. (Mr. al-Qubaisi has been jailed in Abu Dhabi since 2016, making it difficult to defend himself, his lawyer said.)

An entourage of about half a dozen people had zipped through a tour of the apartment, and within a day, a representative called to say they would take it.

She called it one of the strangest deals she’d ever done. “I take longer to buy a pair of sneakers,” she said, “than he took to buy the apartment.”

J.Lo and Ben Affleck Know Exactly What They're Doing

jo lo yacht

By Danielle Cohen

Ben Affleck touching J Lo's butt.

Any advertiser worth their salt knows nostalgia is a powerful tool. You know who else wields nostalgia more powerfully than Don Draper? The summer of 2021’s horniest and most powerful couple, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck. Reunited at long last, these two have been rebooting decade-old source material for their relationship rollout, pandering to their audience with what’s essentially the real-life version of Easter eggs. Their primary text: the music video for “Jenny from the Block.”

It started with Affleck’s Franck Muller watch , which featured heavily in the video and which he wore throughout their initial two-year relationship, after J.Lo gifted it to him. The watch reappeared on his wrist sometime back in May, still customized with the same Chrome Hearts bracelet from all those years ago.

Now, on the same weekend that J.Lo not-so-subtly slipped a Benifer makeout snap into her 52nd birthday Instagram post, the two crafted another visual homage to their glory days. Behold : J.Lo and Affleck, lounging on a yacht deck in St. Tropez, Affleck with his hand firmly on J.Lo’s famous butt, just like the legendary scene from the “Jenny From the Block” video. Affleck, it must be noted, looks significantly more world-weary than he did in the original shot, in which he untied J.Lo’s bikini with a flourish after kissing her. Now he gazes off wistfully into the middle distance, befitting an older and possibly wiser man. And, lest you missed the message yesterday, J.Lo made sure to don a “BEN” necklace earlier this morning , which, though not specifically ripped from an aspect of their relationship, certainly channels a lot of 2002 energy.

The levels of self-consciousness and artifice here are difficult to fathom. Affleck and Lopez must know that people of a certain age are obsessed with their relationship , and that rekindling it sparks cultural nostalgia on a mass scale. Celebrities are alternately hounded by paparazzi and courting them—who can say whether and to what degree the early photos of the couple driving in cars and making out in restaurants were staged? What would the conversations about this between them even be like?

And of course, adding another layer, the “Jenny from the Block” video is about J.Lo’s relationship with her fame, so a lot of the imagery from the video does resemble tabloid features from the past few months: a balcony shot from below , canoodling at an outdoor restaurant table , the couple attempting to find some privacy in a car . Whatever the case, this weekend’s Instagram reveal and throwback reference surely represent a new level of self-conscious celebrity image-making—Affleck and Lopez don’t even need to make another movie together, because they’re doing it in real time.

Meet Jho Low, the fugitive 1MDB financier known as ‘The Asian Great Gatsby’ who paid Leonardo DiCaprio to be his friend

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio with Jho Low pose for a picture.

The 1MDB embezzlement scandal has rocked the business world, and the man believed to be its mastermind is Low Taek Jho, more commonly known as Jho Low.

Malaysian businessman Low fled the country and is now considered a fugitive. The 40-year-old faces charges for money laundering and a litany of other offenses related to the fund prosecutors say he led for many years.

Before he was wanted for his role in 1MDB, Low led a glamorous life that included paying to party with celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and dating supermodel Miranda Kerr.

People from his past allege that Low’s questionable behavior dates back to his days as an MBA student at Wharton.

The ‘Asian Great Gatsby’

In 1981, Low was born to a moderately wealthy family in Malaysia. His jet-setting father taught him the importance of having the right network at an early age. Like Low, his father also had the habit of flying in models for parties.

Low studied at Wharton, where he threw his first elaborate party and became known as “The Asian Great Gatsby.” For his 20th birthday, he rented out Shampoo, one of the hottest nightclubs in Philadelphia at the time, for $40,000.

Low reportedly sent a note to Ivanka Trump as his partying habits developed, inviting her to a gambling trip to Atlantic City’s Trump Plaza Hotel. He later told his friends that she declined because she didn’t want to set foot in one of her father’s casinos.

Low also developed a crush on Paris Hilton and watched her movie “House of Wax” multiple times, which caused eye rolls from his roommates, according to The New York Post .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Paris Hilton (@parishilton)

After college, he returned home with hopes of working for the network he built at Wharton, helping them with investment deals. While this plan didn’t work out as he had hoped, he was able to connect Malaysian deputy prime minister Najib Razak with Mubadala Development, an investment fund. This connection gave Low status, giving him access to Malaysian banks that lent him billions of dollars.

Three years later, Najib Razak became prime minister, and Low reinvented himself, becoming the alleged mastermind behind offshore financing. He learned how to set up shell companies and moved large sums of money around, according to prosecutors.

As the new prime minister looked for ways to fund his government, Low came up with the idea of creating a sovereign wealth fund, and 1MDB was born. He took control of the fund and siphoned $700 million to himself. This initial amount was nothing compared to the more significant sums that came after, giving him access to unlimited wealth.

Partying with Paris Hilton

Low partied like there was no tomorrow. Expenses for parties went up to six figures as he paid celebrities like Megan Fox , Paris Hilton, and Leonardo DiCaprio to attend, according to the New York Post .

In “ Billion Dollar Whale “, a book about Low, the authors write that he spent $85 million on parties between October 2009 and June 2010. Highlights included running up a $160,000 tab at New York City’s The Avenue, and sending 23 bottles of Cristal champagne to Lindsay Lohan’s table at 1Oak.

Still in love with Paris Hilton, Low contacted her manager in 2009 to see if he could pay her to attend his parties. According to the book, she told friends she got paid $100,000 per event. A year later, he rented Paul Allen’s superyacht and spent millions on champagne. These bottles were later poured by Low and his entourage, which now included Hilton.

For her 29th birthday in Las Vegas, Low gave Hilton $250,000 in gambling chips and gifted her a Cartier watch.

Low later financed Red Granite, the film company that produced “The Wolf Of Wall Street.” In 2011, the company introduced itself at the Cannes Film Festival by throwing one of Low’s usual bashes.

Celebrities in attendance included DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, and Jamie Foxx. Kanye West and Pharell performed for guests. Jordan Belfort, the subject of “The Wolf of Wall Street” and no stranger to fraud, also attended the party. He told his girlfriend that something didn’t look right, Billion Dollar Whale reports.

1MDB trial revelations

Low paid $250,000 to Fox, $100,000 to Hilton, and $50,000 to Kim Kardashian to attend parties, according to Bloomberg .

The jury was also shown a contract for Leonardo DiCaprio that dated back to November 2009.

The actor was flown on an exclusive private jet to attend Low’s birthday party and was paid $150,000 to attend the party, a dinner, and private gambling activities. DiCaprio was one of his closest celebrity friends, and Low even gifted him a $9.2 million Basquiat artwork once.

In July 2012, Low held a yacht party on the French Riviera and ordered for models to be flown in. This deed was written out as “Strategic Escorts LLC.”

Low allegedly threw these parties with help from Goldman Sachs bankers Roger Ng and Tim Leissner. Leissner has pleaded guilty and is currently cooperating with the feds. According to prosecutors, Ng pocketed $35 million from these kickbacks.

Leissner also claimed that in 2017, Low said his lawyers and him were in talks with the Trump administration for a deal that would spare 1MDB from U.S. charges, according to Reuters .

Low also said he talked with Jared Kushner, a senior White House adviser under the Trump administration, to shut down the questions around 1MDB, according to The Guardian .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by President Donald J. Trump (@realdonaldtrump)

Someone familiar with Kushner’s schedule has denied these allegations, according to Bloomberg . However, there is still a link between Low and the Trump administration, as Elliot Brody pleaded guilty to lobbying the Trump Administration illegally on behalf of Low.

Mansions, art, and a private jet

Aside from partying, Low also invested in real estate and bought luxury homes in New York, Los Angeles, and London. He also purchased a private plane and spent around $310 million on art, setting a record for paying the highest price for a Basquiat at $48.8 million.

Between 2013 and 2014, he also purchased around $200 million in jewelry. Miranda Kerr, whom he dated in 2014, received $8 million in gifts.

That same year, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mahamad found evidence of what Low had been doing in 1MDB.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Miranda (@mirandakerr)

In 2016, Loretta Lynch, a U.S. Attorney, said that the government would seek to recover more than $1 billion of assets bought using proceeds from 1MDB. Low’s jet, mansions, and EMI stake were seized. Granite, the production company, had to pay $60 million.

Some of Low’s friends surrendered their gifts to the government. This included Kerr’s $8 million in jewelry and DiCaprio’s $13 million in art.

Involvement with 1MDB

Founded in 2009, 1MDB was a state-owned sovereign investment fund co-founded by Najib Razak with the help of financier Jho Low in Malaysia.

The acronym stands for 1Malaysia Development Bhd, and Razak led its advisory board until 2016. It was created to promote development in the country. It planned the new financial district in Kuala Lumpur as one of its first initiatives, and bought privately-owned power plants.

Between 2009 and 2013, the fund raised billions for joint ventures and investment projects. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, most of the money raised was embezzled and diverted to shell companies and offshore bank accounts linked to Low.

In 2018, public anger over the scandal heated up, and voters ousted former Prime Minister Najib Razak. Two years later, Razak, who faced 42 charges of abuse of power, money laundering, criminal breach of trust, and losses, was convicted in the first of many trials.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Najib Razak (@najib_razak)

Goldman Sachs, which was also involved in the scandal, entered its first-ever guilty plea and agreed to pay $5 billion and a $2.9 billion fine in the U.S., according to U.S. News .

Low allegedly led the group of Malaysians who diverted the money invested in the fund into their personal accounts. While he claimed he did consulting work for 1MDB, U.S. prosecutors say he is the mastermind behind creating the shell companies that arranged withdrawals for payoffs and collected proceeds from the fund.

Prosecutors say he funneled $27.3 million from 1MDB to a jeweler in New York for a pink diamond necklace for Razak’s wife, who was first lady at the time.

Although he denies any wrongdoing, he has been charged for money laundering and other offenses in Malaysia and the U.S. Low is now a fugitive.

Today, 1MDB is synonymous with crime and investigations.

Where is Jho Low today?

Regardless of the scandal, some 1MDB projects like the transportation hub and a new financial district plan are still going ahead. However, the fund has been reduced to a shell, and the finance ministry has picked up its assets and debts.

European, American, and Asian authorities have coordinated their investigations to follow the money trail 1MDB left behind. They have also coordinated their legal approaches towards asset recovery.

What they find could help close loopholes in the global financial system that assist in corruption.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has also said that some people have remained silent in fear of retaliation.

The Malaysian government claims Low is now living in Macau, although China denies this. Al Jazeera also reported he’s living in the gambling capital, in a house owned by a senior member of the China Communist Party.

Inside J.Lo’s 52nd Birthday French Yacht Celebration

preview for Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s Relationship History

Here’s that kiss:

Also, if you need a laugh (and you appreciate a good New England reference), there’s this one:

Per The Daily Mail , Affleck flew J.Lo to Saint-Tropez on a flight that reportedly cost $200,000. They spent her big day on a mega-yacht that the Mail said was an estimated $130 million yacht.

Yesterday marked the couple’s first kiss on Instagram, but it was actually not the occasion that marked their Instagram official status. Last Thursday, they made their Instagram-official debut in a roundabout way .

The renewed couple showed up on Leah Remini’s Instagram in a video montage from her birthday party.

jennifer lopez and ben affleck

Yes, Remini is in the image, but it was the first time the couple showed up on social media in a photo that wasn’t taken by paparazzi in 2021 or snapped in the early aughts. Very exciting stuff!

Early this month, Lopez gave an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, in which she talked about how happy she is right now.

“I’m super happy,” she said. “I know people are always wondering. How are you? What’s going on? Are you okay? This is it. I’ve never been better. And I want my people who care about me because I care about them so much, to know that I’ve really gotten to a place in my life where I'm great on my own. And I think once you get to that place, then amazing things happen to you that you never imagine in your life happening again. And so that is where I’m at. And I love all the love that’s coming my way right now and all of the, the good wishes. And I just want everybody to know that it’s the best time. It’s the best time of my life.”

She did not specifically reference Affleck, but the context of their relationship was definitely there .

Later this month, she also gave an interview to Ebro Darden for Apple Music 1 , where she made reference to her breakup with Alex Rodriguez :

“Once you get to the point where you're like, ‘This is not right for me, or this doesn’t feel good, or I need to make an adjustment here. This is not really about anybody else but me.’ Once you do that, stuff starts falling into place.”

10 things to know about Malaysian businessman Jho Low

jo lo yacht

The hunt for fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, wanted in a global corruption probe in connection with the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) state fund, is now shifting to the West Indies islands.

The Star reported on Thursday (July 12) that Mr Low, also known as Jho Low, could have fled to the Saint Kitts and Nevis islands, a small nation in the West Indies, where he holds a citizenship.

On Wednesday, the Singapore Police Force said that it had issued a formal request to Hong Kong for assistance in arresting Mr Low in April 2016, but the request was rejected.

The Straits Times takes a look at Mr Low's rise to prominence in connection with 1MDB scandal, and some lesser-known facts about the 37-year-old.

1. Grew up in Penang in a wealthy family

Mr Low's father Larry Low Hock Peng was an executive for an investment holding company called MWE Holdings Bhd.

His grandfather Low Meng Tak built a substantial part of the family fortune in China and Thailand through his entrepreneurship in iron-ore mining and various liquor distilleries.

2. Attended elite schools in Britain and the United States

Mr Low attended London's Harrow School, during which he was believed to have met former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak's stepson Riza Aziz, who was studying at the London School of Economics. He later attended Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

3. Malaysian student group at Wharton School

At Wharton School, Mr Low stayed close to his roots by running a Malaysian student group. The New York Times reported that he also met members of prominent Jordanian and Kuwaiti families at the school.

4. Had close ties to Saudi royalty

Mr Low's savvy networking and leveraging of friendships forged with members of the royal families from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi while at Wharton was said to have given him close ties to those at the highest levels of power in Malaysia.

He is known to have succeeded in securing an 11th-hour meeting with the Kuwaiti Premier for ex-prime minister Najib, who was returning home after an official visit to France.

5. Helped to set up 1MDB sovereign wealth fund

Najib entrusted Mr Low with the task of putting together a multi-billion-ringgit sovereign wealth fund, called the Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA). Mr Low was said to have been involved only in the initial set-up of TIA, which was later renamed 1MDB.

6. Partied with Paris Hilton

jo lo yacht

Mr Low was photographed partying with socialite Paris Hilton in 2010 and appearing on the red carpet with singer Alicia Keys. He also posed for a photo with Leonardo DiCaprio at the 2013 Paris premiere of The Wolf of Wall Street, produced by a company co-founded byMr Riza.

7. Co-organised star-studded concert in Penang before 2013 election

In 2013, Mr Low co-organised a concert in Penang on nomination day, featuring Cantopop stars Leon Lai and Alan Tam, and American rappers Ludacris and Busta Rhymes. Mr Low claimed it was not a political event but organised to promote unity, peace and harmony. Concertgoers could redeem a ticket for a minimum RM1 donation to charity.

8. Sold luxury New York homes to Najib's stepson

Mr Low bought prime real estate in the United States worth US$41.5 million that he later sold to Mr Riza for healthy profits. In 2010 and 2011, Mr Low bought three luxury homes worth US$72 million, of which Mr Aziz bought two. Mr Low was said to have made a 40 per cent profit on one of the transactions.

9. Is the CEO of private equity firm Jynwel Capital

Mr Low is the CEO of Hong Kong-based private equity investment and advisory firm Jynwel Capital, which in 2014 planned to make a US$2.2 billion bid to buy Reebok from Germany company Adidas, together with Abu Dhabi government-affiliated funds.

10. Had his superyacht, Equanimity, seized in February

jo lo yacht

Indonesian police seized the yacht on Feb 28, off resort island Bali as part of a joint operation with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The US Department of Justice had earlier claimed that the Equanimity, valued at US$250 million (S$328 million), was among assets purchased by Mr Low using funds siphoned from 1MDB.

On board with Jo Ellard, owner of Do It Now

Nothing matches the thrill of riding her beloved cutting horses, says superyacht owner Jo Ellard. But getting away from it all on her 30.33 metre Horizon yacht Do It Now comes a very close second...

Jo Ellard is passionate about two things that don’t seem like a natural fit: horses and being on her boat. On Do It Now , her new yacht, she has combined them into an interior that she says is neither feminine nor masculine, contemporary nor classic, but “handsome.”

It’s a far cry from the nautical or beach themes that are so frequent in yacht interiors and instead makes reference to the Western lifestyle Ellard so enjoys. Inside the yacht’s open saloon, a space remarkable for its ceiling height and abundant beautifully stained oak, dark African mahogany floor and ranch-style furnishings, is an arresting picture of a horse with a shiny brown coat and handsome black mane. His name is Ichi La Roo, or Max, and he is Ellard’s favourite horse. Most days the horse will be running in a paddock or kicking up sawdust in an arena filled with cattle, country music, whistles and camera flashes. But on one particular day, he found himself trotting around a photo studio and posing for fine art photographer Constance Jaeggi. Ellard wasn’t planning on being part of the shoot but, as she shared a moment with the horse, the photographer, who also rides competitively, convinced her the image would be a keeper.

She was right. The Kiss , as they called the portrait, says a lot about the bond that exists between them. “He is a stallion, but he is so kind,” Ellard says. “I own his father [Cat Ichi], his mother [Snicker Roo], his grandmother [Meradas Dee Jay] and his great-grandmother on his mother’s side [Laney Doc].” His grandfather (High Brow Cat) was the greatest sire of all time, she adds. “I did not grow up with horses but I love horses, always did, even when I was a child.”

Ellard grew up in Winona, Mississippi. Her early professional life was in healthcare but the following years and her marriage to a like-minded husband, whom she met while attending a conference in Florida, allowed her to turn that childhood equine passion into a full-time occupation. Not only does she breed championship horses, she also rides them competitively. Her sport of choice is cutting, which she picked up in the late 1980s after building a huge ranch business with her late husband, Bill Joe Ellard.

Bill, an Arkansas native, turned his knack for selling and optimistic nature into a successful insurance business, which still operates today as the National Teachers Associates Life Insurance Company. He grew up loving to compete in rodeo. The couple moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1978 and a few years later they established EE Ranches. The first ranch they built was in Jo’s home state of Mississippi, where they raised registered horned Hereford cattle. Soon after, they began to develop their horse ranch in Pilot Point, Texas. While Bill preferred the cattle, she dedicated herself to the horses. For a time, all of Jo’s energy went into building the ranches. Once the heavy lifting was done, she started competing with the horses that they bought or bred.

Over the next 30 years EE Ranches would establish itself as a breeder of world class cutting horses. Jo went on to earn two NCHA Hall of Fame titles, one for her work establishing and developing the National Youth Cutting Horse Association and another for her achievements in the competition arena.

Cutting is as American as apple pie, enjoying a huge following in the US, and abroad, with thrilling events and lucrative rewards. The Triple Crown in Fort Worth, for example, pays out $10 million in prize money, but it does not get the national play that, say, the Kentucky Derby does. However, when Jo Ellard speaks about it, it’s easy to get drawn into the excitement.

Cutting horses have been bred by big cattle ranchers over the past couple of centuries, to help cowboys get a cow or calf out of a roaming herd. “They have to be smarter, better trained, more athletic,” Ellard says. “The cutting horse has to think on its own. All other horses in competition only do what the rider tells them to do.” In competition, the rider isn’t allowed to use reins or visible cues, and the horse is left to figure out on its own how to contain the calf, she explains.

What started as informal taunts between ranchers turned into serious competition. In 1946, the NCHA was created to oversee the competitions, formalise the rules and preserve the precious heritage of the Western way of life. The sport grew beyond the prairies because little compares to it. “There is nothing as exhilarating as being on that horse. You’re going 90 miles an hour this way, and in a split second you’re going 90 miles an hour that way,” says Ellard, who served as the NCHA’s president from 2015 to 2016. “An exhilarating ride is when there is a perfect clean cut right down the middle. It is fast and absolutely furious. And when you ride out of there, you can’t breathe.”

So, how did Ellard go from enjoying the thrill of riding to boating? It was another pastime that the Ellards shared. “We were really a good mix. Our passions were ranching and boating, and we loved it and lived it 110 per cent,” she says. Bill and Jo were at an insurance meeting in Fort Lauderdale in the mid-1970s and staying in one of the upper floor rooms of the Pier Sixty-Six hotel, when Bill expressed the desire to have his own boat one day. They had stepped on to the balcony to look at the view, which naturally included the yachts that always line the city’s docks and canals. “I’m going to have one of those,” he told her.

Not long after that they bought an 11.6 metre Chris-Craft. “His insurance business was fairly young at this point but it prospered and, as it did, the size of his boats grew,” she says. “He really, really enjoyed the boating and it is where he went to really get away.”

After a while, they decided that running the boat took away from the relaxation they craved when they went out on the water. When they bought the first of their two Hatteras yachts, they also hired their first captain. They named the boat together – Do It Now . It was the mantra of Bill Ellard’s mentor and one-time boss, the insurance maverick and self-help book author W Clement Stone. They went on to own a 19.2 metre Hatteras, which they had for many years.

After her husband died seven years ago, Ellard kept on with boating and, like he did, enjoys it for the relaxation and the break it gives her from running a huge business. “It’s the only place where I come that I don’t work,” she says. She is president of EE Ranches, which today comprises five properties in three states, chairman of the insurance company and she oversees real estate assets spread all over the country. She drives a lot, usually with her dogs riding with her. When I ask her what is the first thing she packs – a question that this practical woman finds, frankly, a bit silly – she has to think for a while. “Listen, I pack every three days, so nothing is special on any one trip.” She has many outfits – for the boardroom, or the ranch, or the competition or the boat.

Ellard enjoyed her 19.2 metre Hatteras for 20 years before she decided it was time for a new boat. She searched for many months and had seen some 15 boats from five builders when her broker mentioned a 23.2 metre Horizon for sale. She’d never heard of the brand but, after doing some research, decided to go and see for herself. She flew to Key Largo from a horse event in Kentucky to see it with her broker and captain. “I knew from within five minutes of being on the boat that I was going to own it. It was just a matter of negotiating,” she says.

First, she liked the boat’s looks. Then over time she grew to appreciate how well it performed for crew and guests alike. She calls herself a Horizon yacht owner for life. “What really clinched it is Horizon’s attention to their owners and their needs,” she says. When she decided to go on to a larger boat, after five years, the builder was very responsive. Horizon created a new model out of its existing E series to accommodate all that she wanted: an open main deck with a convivial eat-in galley – she eats out a lot, so when she’s on the boat she prefers to cook and eat on board – a master cabin with his and hers bathrooms, four full guests’ staterooms, big crew quarters and a huge open sundeck. “This is my dream boat,” she says. “It’s all I wanted in a boat.” Ellard worked with Horizon’s in-house designers and her daughter-in-law, Ornella Ellard, of Ella Italian Design, to come up with the décor. She added a finishing touch, a great big carpet that she took from under a table in her Dallas home. It was to be temporary but everyone loves it. “I think it’s found its home,” she says.

For Ellard boating is a social affair, so she chose to celebrate the arrival of the yacht with family, friends and guests of the Taiwanese yacht builder. Do It Now  was christened at the Palm Beach International Boat Show last March in an elegant affair that Ellard found very moving, before she embarked on a shakedown cruise. A few weeks later she was back on board and took part in the Horizon rendezvous in the Bahamas .

Her close relationship with the builder took an interesting twist. A few years ago, she convinced Horizon that the cutting world was the perfect venue to find new clients and the yacht builder went on to sponsor one of the NCHA’s championships. As she says, horses and boats are the perfect match.

Bombshell documentary reveals the glamorous life of Jho Low

Jho Low

An explosive new documentary on the 1MDB-fund scandal debuted in New York on Friday featuring previously unseen footage of Jho Low, the mysterious international playboy-turned-alleged fugitive fraudster at the center of the Malaysian money mystery.

“The Kleptocrats” premiered just days after Low was indicted by the Justice Department for his alleged role in laundering billions from the Malaysian fund.

In hiding, Low has maintained his innocence. But the new film — executive-produced and written by Louise Story, who broke the 1MDB scandal for The New York Times and has since joined The Wall Street Journal as a senior editor — tracks Low’s rise from mild-mannered Malaysian student at top British boarding school Harrow to the purported billionaire known for partying with the likes of Leo DiCaprio and Paris Hilton.

The allegedly dirty money funded purchases of luxury real estate and art, and allegedly backed Red Granite Pictures, which ironically made the financial-fraud film, “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Gigi Hadid and Mr. Jho Low in 2014.

“Kleptocrats” includes footage of Red Granite’s over-the-top Cannes launch, where Pharrell Williams, Jamie Foxx and Kanye West performed, as well as a secret recording of a Red Granite exec allegedly telling a Hollywood player who taped their talk, “You don’t realize the people I have behind me.”

A rare clip of Low shows him at the mic at a St. Tropez club ordering 100 bottles of Cristal. “We got a lot of s–t coming from Saudi and Malaysia!” he yells.

The film, directed by Sam Hobkinson, deftly details how 1MDB invested a cool $1 billion in PetroSaudi.

The late Robin Leach said a Low birthday bash was “the most expensive party that Las Vegas has ever seen.”

Story told us, “When I began to look into him in 2013, there was not much you could find on him.”

Since Low was never tagged in any party pics, the film team searched endless images to ID him themselves.

The film’s playing DOC NYC, and is repped by Dogwoof.
