Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary boat safari: Offbeat Mumbai

One of the offbeat & unique things to do in Mumbai, that I had been wanting to do for a long time was visit the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary and take their safari in Mumbai. I had seen such beautiful pics of these pink Flamingo birds in various locations that I wanted to actually see them myself & click some beautiful pics! The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary in Airoli Navi Mumbai, is best suited for this…a boat ride takes you into their natural habitat.

Flamingos are the lovely long-legged  birds with  bright pink feathers. Their name is derived from the Spanish word meaning “flame-colored”, as these  birds are famous  for their vibrant appearance. I thought these birds were born pink, but hey! They’re born white & grey. How do the flamingos turn pink? Well, it’s their food….only after they start eating the algae here, they turn pink! How amazing is that!!

The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary region is where these beautiful birds fly in from Kutch for more than 3 months in the summers & paint Mumbai’s seashore pink. The Flamingo safari takes you extremely close to these Flamingo birds & they can be seen clearly with their brood  from a boat, hence this place has become the  talk of the town. Plan an outing  with friends or family, the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is worth a visit in the migratory season.

Flamingo season in Mumbai- Best time for Flamingo safari

December- early May is the best time to do the Flamingo boat safari in Mumbai at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. Thousands of Flamingos migrate to Mumbai every year between the months of October and March. Imagine, over 30,000 of pink flamingos, along with their chicks, occupy the mudflats and the bordering mangroves. By May-end, these flamingos usually start exiting the city, and completely fly out around June.

Why do the Flamingos turn pink?

During the flamingo boat safari at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, I was surprised to learn that Flamingos are not born pink, they turn pink from the food they eat- they are born white & grey. :O The bright pink color of Flamingos comes from beta-carotene, a reddish pigment present in huge quantities in the algae that Flamingos eat. The same carotenoids give carrots their orange color & tomatoes their red colour. As the Flamingo feasts on algae, its body metabolizes the pigments, turning its feathers into the beautiful pink that we admire.

How to reach the Flamingo boat safari Airoli creek

Although called Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, the boarding location for the Flamingo boat ride is actually Airoli. You will know when you are nearby- Flamingo statues start appearing as soon as you turn from Eastern express highway towards Airoli. 😀

From there, ricks, Ola, Uber etc. are easily available. We had booked an Uber from our home itself for convenience.

Have you visited this beautiful quaint weekend getaway from Mumbai yet?

The grounds of the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary were very pleasant, very neatly maintained & absolutely green. There was a counter from which the tickets were to be picked up- if booked earlier. You can also find a museum that was interactive with sounds of birds at the press of buttons; children would love this very much, we adults did too! 🙂

The Flamingo boat safari jetty was about a 5 mins walk & there were benches around for waiting. The boat had enough life jackets & 2-3 employees manning the wheel & acting as our guides. They were really informative & spoke at  length about the types of Flamingos, what they eat etc. It was from him we learnt about Greater & Lesser Flamingos, their season and how Flamingos turn pink.

The 24-seater boat safari takes us inside the mangroves & goes as deep as 10 km. The flamingo boat ride was of an hour, however we could not spot Flamingos for about 20 mins & were worried whether we would see any at all! And then, almost suddenly, after a turn…there were rows of Flamingos as far as the eye could see…a much awaited pretty sight indeed.

The Lesser Flamingo is the smallest species of Flamingo, with a dark red beak and a black tip while the Greater Flamingo is the largest species of Flamingo, with a  Pink beak and a black tip.

As one Flamingo took flight, the rest followed and formed a beautiful formation, a treat to the eyes! The boat bobbed there for some time allowing us to soak in the beauty before we returned. It is best enjoyed with binoculars so make sure you carry them. All the while, the guide told us details of the Flamingos & answered our questions with great interest & enthusiasm.

There is also a boardwalk & creek view that’s worth visiting.

• Imp: Unfortunately, there’s no cafeteria/ canteen for water, tea or snacks. There was a cooler though. We were completely burnt out by the time we finished our Flamingo boat ride, given the April weather so do carry snacks & water from home! And wear comfortable cotton clothes.

We went to Wadhwa R Galleria, Mulund for desperately required food & a cool-down before we started on our return journey.

Flamingo safari booking Airoli How to book Flamingo boat safari in Mumbai

We WhatsApped the CMBC no: +91 9987673737 & they sent us a monthly schedule for boat safari at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. The timings for boat ride change daily as per high tide so there aren’t fixed timings. However, there are 3 rides daily.  We chose 2-3 dates & timings & enquired about availability. Once confirmed, the payment for the Flamingo boat safari Airoli can be made by QR code scanning or account transfer to secure the seats. Confirmation is received over WhatsApp itself. Tickets can be picked at the site just before boating.

Flamingo safari boat ride charges: – INR 396 (Monday to Friday), INR 528 (Saturday & Sunday) per person. – INR 6,600 per speedboat for 7 people: weekdays, INR 7920: weekends

If you book a boat ride, the entry charges do not have to be paid.

What to expect at the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary boat safari Airoli

You can see large flocks of the Lesser Flamingos and Greater Flamingos. It was a beautiful sight to see rows & rows of them together & then taking flight & flying in beautiful formations. The boat maintains some distance & keeps bobbing in the water a little distance away, hence binoculars are recommended.

I also expected to see Flamingos like this…in the sand, on one leg as generally shown in pics. Since the boat ride happens during high tide only & the Flamingos go to the shore during low tide only, you will not get to see both together- either you take a boat & see them in water; or forget boating & just visit the creek in low tide to see them feeding near the shore.

Where can we see Flamingos in Mumbai

Flamingos can be seen at Sewri, Wadala, Bhandup & New Mumbai apart from the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. But boating is available only at Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary Airoli.

As far as operations are concerned, the boat is maintained meticulously by our team. The crew appointed by us, on behalf of the client, to carry out daily maintenance jobs are trained, supervised, and monitored very closely. We carry out fuelling personally to ensure no pilferage and maintain a very strict fuel log. Stocks of cleaning material, onboard equipment and spares, are closely monitored. The crew is trained in basic hygiene and... We monitor the trips and boat usage closely and can make available, backup within the Mumbai harbour in case of any breakdown, rescue requirement or any such emergency.

This vessel was built in India and has joined the Indian Navy on completion of her sea trials. In 2004, she completed her first circumnavigation of the world! During the construction, it was necessary to inspect the vessel in the shipyard and report back to the designer in the U.K. The navy is so happy with the performance and utilization of this ship that they are in the process of ordering a second ship.

You can now take a flamingo safari in Mumbai

Bird lovers, grab those binoculars, slather the sunscreen and book yourself a seat on India's first flamingo safari. The tour will take you across 1,690 hectares of mangroves and mudlfats between Vashi and Airoli creeks, a protected sanctuary for the flamingos, who fly in from Kutch for about five months each year.

The flamingo safari starts at the Coastal Marine Biodiversity Centre in Airoli, near Thane. The hour-long tour takes you around 10km of the mangroves along Mumbai's eastern seaboard all the way up to Vashi and back. Each boat seats 24 people, with provisions for a smaller eight-seater speed boat to navigate through the less-navigable parts. The timings are subject to the tide (see ticketing details below).

Why is this special? So far, you could view the birds from a distance from viewpoints at Sewri and Uran. The flamingo safari will take you up and close to these pink beauties, N Vasudevan, additional principal chief conservator of forests, State Mangrove Cell told CNT.

The guides for this safari have been trained by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). If you're up for it, you can pick up a book Birds of Thane Creek from the souvenir store and flip through it.

Bird watching is a well-known hobby for many, irrespective of their age. It is fun, relaxing, and also educational, especially if you are interested in ornithology. People of all ages, abilities and walks of life can enjoy the activity over the weekend or when they have some spare time in the mornings. So, if you’re in Mumbai and want to enjoy some fresh air while learning more about nature, head out to Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary.

The flamingo sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers and is still a sparsely populated hub for observing birds. You can tour the creek on a boat ride while spotting many Lesser and Greater flamingos. You can also spot other birds like the Sandpiper, Egrets, Black-headed Ibis, Grey Heron, Plover, Whimbrel, Northern Shoveler, etc.

Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is one of the unexplored places in Maharashtra. Its location is exotic, with picturesque surroundings. It consists of a dense mangrove forest with over a thousand birds. However, it is prominently known for the migratory flamingos that gather in spring every year.

The History

Thane Creek is the second Marine Sanctuary in Maharashtra. In August 2015, the Maharashtra Government declared it an ‘Important Bird Area and Flamingo Sanctuary.’ Since 1994, people have spotted various species of migratory, including Greater Flamingo, Lesser Flamingo, Spot-billed Duck, Painted Stork, and Pied Avocet.

The location of the flamingo sanctuary is on the western bank of Thane Creek. From the Airoli Bridge, the sanctuary looks breathtakingly beautiful. You can see a sky full of pink feathers in the attractive setting of the mangrove forest.

• When should one visit?

Flamingos fly to the sanctuary in spring. Therefore, you should plan your visit between late February and the end of May. On your visit during this time, you can see many species of migratory birds with their numerous feathers filling the sky.

Timings and entry fee

The sanctuary remains open from Monday to Saturday for visitors. Monday to Friday, the timings are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Saturday, you can visit from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The sanctuary does not open on Sunday.

The entry fee for adults is ₹50 per head. For children, the entry fee is ₹25 per head. There is no extra fee for videography or photography. You can make your Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary booking to ensure that you do not have any problems entering the sanctuary.

How to reach?

The Thane Railway Station is the closest railway station to the flamingo sanctuary. The driving time between the sanctuary and the railway station is half an hour. Public buses are also an option. But, if you want to take the boat safari, go to the Coastal and Marine Biodiversity centre for a guided tour. The Coastal and Marine Biodiversity centre is 9.5 kilometres away from Thane Railway Station. Visitors can book a local bus or a taxi, depending on their preference.

Tour options

There are two routes to explore the sanctuary. The first is from the Bhandup pumping station side, while the second is boating from the Airoli side. You can make your Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary booking for either trip as per your choice.

Bird watching, or the observation of live birds in their natural habitat, is a popular recreational activity. Airoli Flamingo Sanctuary. Let’s go! Hi, all travel enthusiasts and nature lovers. Hope you are staying afloat in the absence of leisure travel due to the pandemic. So, amidst the Corona Pandemic, I have travelled to a few destinations that too mostly in panic. We took our first family trip to Alibaug , a beach destination in Maharashtra, after travel restrictions were relaxed. I will share more on it in my upcoming blogs.

For now, I have good news for people staying in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. So, I explored a local destination last weekend – Coastal & Marine Biodiversity Centre – Navi Mumbai, and I must say I am impressed.

How big is the Airoli Flamingo Sanctuary?

The state-of-the-art Airoli Flamingo Sanctuary is spread across 50 acres of land. The theme is well-displayed across the campus.

The moment I entered I was greeted by flamingos, obviously the plastic ones. Kids really enjoy this experience and it will be a welcome break for them too, considering they are stuck in the house too, due to the pandemic.

Well, once inside the nature trail, I was mesmerized the most by the quaint raised bamboo bridge, a mangrove pathway that led us to a bird-watching paradise, close to the creek.

From that close, we could easily spot hundreds of flamingos gracefully dancing in the water. For bird watchers, it’s a treat to see these migratory birds in their natural habitat.

There are two well-designed informational museums inside Airoli Flamingo Sanctuary , fully air-conditioned and clean. They exhibit the importance of mangroves and aquatic life, also explaining at length about marine biodiversity.

In addition, there are gardens for kids to just run around. Make sure to keep two hours in hand to explore this beautiful and planned jungle. Also, don’t miss the sunset, the view is breath-taking from the creek view and flamingo point.

Key points to remember while visiting Airoli Flamingo Sanctuary:

Best time to visit: Feb end to start of the May ! This is the time when these migratory birds fly to the creek and make it their home for a few months.

Timings : 10 am to 6 pm (note, they are strict about the timings).

Entry fees: Rs. 50 per head for adults, and Rs. 25 for children above five years . (Please and I say this from first-hand experience, carry cash in your pocket. They don’t accept any UPI payment option or card swipe too.) These charges do not include the boat ride charges .

How to reach:

The nearest railway station in Navi Mumbai is Airoli . This place is easily accessible by road, via both Eastern and Western expressway.

Essentials to carry

• Water bottle as you might feel thirsty with all the trek.
• Comfortable shoes, of course you will have to walk a lot to explore the nature trail.
• Binoculars, if you have them, carry it. It will enable you to observe flamingos, up and close. I had binocs too but didn’t remember to carry, my bad!

• Flamingo Safari in Mumbai: Go Up, Close, & Personal With Migratory Birds

Good news for all the birders out there! Now you have something special to look up to if you are in and around Mumbai. Head to the Flamingo Sanctuary for a wonderful day out with the beautiful migratory birds. Because now you can take a flamingo safari in Mumbai and this one is 1690 hectares of mudflats and mangroves between Vashi and Airoli (Thane Creek Mudflats). One of the lesser explored areas of Mumbai, the creek region is where these lovely birds fly in from Kutch for almost 3 months.

It is from here that the migratory birds can be seen in their natural habitat and the government has made significant efforts to turn this place into a talk of the town. Plan an outing on weekend with friends or family, the city’s Flamingo Sanctuary is worth a visit this migratory season.

Image Source Take a boat and reach the mudflat from where you can actually watch the migratory flamingoes. With effect from February 1, 2018, Maharashtra’s mangroves department has introduced a 24-seater boat exclusively to take the tourists inside the mangroves which go as deep as 10 km. Additionally, there is an 8-seater speed boat that delves deeper into the mangroves from where almost all the migratory birds can be spotted from the close quarters.

The speedboat is just perfect for a family or group of friends. Earlier tourists had the option of watching these wonderful birds from Sewri mudflat and Uran, and that too only from a distance. Now, this is some exciting adventure awaiting in Vashi and Airoli mudflats.

Best time: This is the best time! Yes, February end – May beginning is the best time to visit the migratory bird in the sanctuary
