1982 Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender, sailed until pulled for bottom paint when is was discovered that the gelcoat had blistered. I bought the boat locally and it had set for several years in brackish water, sailed but not pulled seasonally. Couldn't get the local boat yard interested in the job on a small boat. I had a trailer modified to pull the boat and I set out to strip the gelcoat under the guidance of a local expert. Gently ground the gelcoat down to glass on the bulk of the below waterline hull. Will need a couple hours of grinding, some sanding and then finish. Not a more beautiful boat on the water when underway. Classic lines... Cushions are original and in great shape. Full set of sails in clean working condition. Rigging is solid. Teak needs some sanding and your choice of sealant. Motor starts easily and runs great. Boat deserves refurbishing to its original glory but could be back in the water to enjoy the end of summer with a few days work. I have decided to move out of state and do not have a place to work on it at new house. These boats are hard to find, expensive when refurbished and prized by anyone who gets the opportunity to sail. The trailer is modified for short distance travel and for work out of water. Trailer is not registered and I do not have title. A new custom trailer can be purchased for under $2500 at Triad trailers in Raleigh.

She has 3 Doyle sails, a Genoa, 100% jib, and a main all made for this boat 7 years ago. Main sail cover is 2 years old, needs some repair to the leading edge. The boat has been used very little since I bought 3 years ago. Kept on a mooring in a marina during the summer and removed from the water during the winter for storage.The foresails have a roller furling system, Jib and main sheets all have Harken ratchet blocks,. The furling and halyards are all led to the cockpit to allow single handed sailing. The 2013 Honda 2.3 motor comes with it. The boom vang is rigid so it supports the boom, making raising and lowering the main easier...no boom lift to mess around with. It had no cushions when we bought it and it still doesn't since the goal was primarily day sailing. There is no trailer.Owner must collect.Payment by cheque

"America's Littlest Yacht," this 1973 classic Carl Alberg-designed beauty looks and handles like a much bigger boat. It's a guaranteed head-turner -- stand by for thumbs-ups from passing boats! Swift and stable, its full-keel design tracks very well, making it ideal for coastal New England. Roller-furling jib and main included, rigged for spinnaker. Very new 2013 solar-charged, 6-circuit 24-AGM electrical system, w/Raytheon depth-finder, automatic electric bilge pump, LED cabin and running lights. Lightly used 2002 Honda 2.2-hp, 4-cycle, air-cooled outboard motor starts on the first pull, and had a professional overhaul in May. Moves the boat along crisply at 4.5 to 5 knots. This boat is sail-away ready. No trailer included, but its shallow 2'7" draft and 2,000-pound displacement makes the Typhoon an easily trailerable boat. Marina haul-out and dry storage fees are paid through September, if you need time to arrange transport. Three coats of blue Interlux Schooner anti-fouling bottom paint, sanded and primed in 2013, no blisters of any kind. Anti-slip blue deck and cockpit floor coating on solid, white fiberglass hull. New spreaders, standing rigging, windex, Genoa sheets. Sails not new but years of good sailing ahead. Blue Sunbrella mainsail cover, UV-block Sunbrella fabric on trailing edge of jib acts as furled cover. The Typhoon's "full keel", with 900 Ibs. of molded-in ballast gives the feel of a larger boat, with the steadiness and stability not found in other designs. Classic design, good condition very stable, dry boat small cabin accommodates two comfortably. She has a deep, roomy 6 foot cockpit that is self bailing. You sit in her, not on her. There's ample dry storage space in the fore peak. The Typhoon is the perfect boat for learning the fundamentals of sailing and does what you want, smoothly and predictably with stability. Below decks, the cuddy cabin contains a double forward cushioned V-berth and space for 2 quarter berths. There is an area for an optional marine head, portable ice chest and stove, plus a surprising amount of storage space. She's a great boat for over night and weekend cruising. In 2002 this Typhoon hull and cabin were refinished with Awlgrip and all teak trim was replaced. The boat has been in storage since 2005 and the peak trim reflects this time without appropriate care. The boat comes with a working jib and a roller 120 jib. The main has been lost while the boat was in storage. The single axle trailer has 7 adjustable supports, all LED lighting and is in new condition. This trailer is capable of taking this boat anywhere with ease. 1977 Cape Dory Typhoon weekender (#1485) in good overall condition. Designed by Carl Alberg, the Typhoon is solidly built and stable under windy conditions like a full-size cruising boat yet trailerable and quite nimble under sail. During season, this Typhoon is moored and sailed comfortably in breezy Muscongus Bay. The Typhoon is for sale because I am downsizing to a smaller cat rigged centerboard sailboat.

Equipment: This Typhoon is well equipped, and well maintained. Typhoon is in Waldoboro, Maine. A trailer is included in the sale for regional transport, seasonal launching, and hauling. The boat comes with five sails, two mainsails (one with reef points), two genoa jibs, and a working jib. Condition varies, but all have plenty of life left and are well-built. Halyards are in-mast. Standing rigging is in good condition. Most hardware is Spartan bronze. Annual maintenance includes bottom paint as needed, teak cleaning, and waxing of all fiberglass. Other features include marine plywood and hardwood cockpit hatch, modern Raymarine depth sounder, navigation lights, a hard-mounted solar panel, tinned marine-grade wiring with a small fused electrical panel, upgraded compass, bronze Danforth anchor chocks on foredeck with anchor, hawsepipe on deck and small chain locker below, long boat hook, and a 6-12 adjustable whisker pole. There are no soft spots in the deck. The boat includes a 5 HP Mercury extra-long shaft 4-stroke motor with less than 50 hours affixed to a solid transom-mounted outboard motor bracket. The motor is annually serviced professionally.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

The DAYSAILER model has a slightly larger cockpit than WEEKENDER. With nearly 2000 built, this was Cape Dory’s most successful model.
