All Kraken's comprise of a one piece hull and integral Zero Keel which houses a sealed lead ballast bulb.

The hull lay up is built using 20-25 layers of composite engineered fabrics bonded together by vinyl-ester resins.

The general hull thickness is a minimum of 18mm.

Aramid fibre composites (Kevlar) is also used in all impact areas, the bow stem, the front of the keel and the keel base.

The hull topsides incorporate 25mm closed cell foam, the FRP foam sandwich which extends from 45cm (18") above the waterline to deck level. This structure improves insulation and overall hull form rigidity.

A Kraken's hull and structures exhibited no flexing.

58 ft sailing yacht

The rudder and steering system is the most vulnerable element of any yacht, in recognition of this, the Kraken engineering and design team have developed the world's safest rudder and steering system.

The rudder is fully protected and supported by a full length skeg with an integral stainless steel beam, which has at its foot the first rudder bearing. The 3.5" (90mm) rudder stock has a second (main) bearing at its centre as it passes into the hull at the transom. This bearing is accessible and removable from the inside of transom. Even at sea!

The rudder stock has a removable third bearing at the top inside the stern lazarette. The rudder itself comprises an integral stainless steel armature, which is welded to the stainless steel rudder stock. It is then finished and faired using FRP/vinyl-ester.

Learn more about the ALPHA™ Rudder here

A heavily reinforced ‘solid crash zone’ below the anchor chain locker, incorporating high density closed cell foam with substantial reinforcements in aramid fibres extends from above the waterline to 50cm below it. This solid area runs through to the first sealed bulkhead providing maximum collision protection.

https://krakenyachts.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Kraken-Structure-Animation.mp4

All longitudinal and latitudinal structures are individually bonded in during the hull layup stages with no prefabricated structural components . The video below explains how the structural frames and stringers work on a Kraken Yacht.

All bulkheads are vacuum infused FRP with 25mm structural foam core. No plywood is used. There are two watertight sealed bulkheads forward, one between the anchor locker and the forward lazarette and a second one between the forward lazarette and the interior. A further watertight, sealed bulkhead at the stern divides the interior from the aft lazarette.

The structural bulkheads are fully bonded into the hull stringers & frames.

The deck is vacuum infused FRP using composite fibres and vinyl-ester resin with a structural foam core. This provides high levels of rigidity and insulation.

The deck structure is single-skin FRP around the base of all deck fittings.

The outside finish of the deck is panelled non-slip gelcoat with Flexiteek side decks and cockpit sole as standard.

All Kraken have an Integral moulded safety bulwark with concave internal surface for superior deck safety at sea.

58 ft sailing yacht

Ultra-high impact-resistant laminated glass is used in the wrap-around saloon windows and port lights so that accidental damage will not result in water ingress to the interior.

Standard hull gelcoat colour is Signal White. Many colour options available at owners choice.

Double line boot top in Alwgrip to owners colour choice.

3 x coats of primer and sealer applied below the waterline before standard antifoul in dark grey, other colour choices available.

On the 25th anniversary of the founding of the company, Fleming Yachts were proud to announce the introduction of the all-new Fleming 58.

After extensive research and input from existing Fleming owners, we identified the need for a boat to bridge the gap between the Fleming 55 and the 65. While retaining the Fleming classic lines, the 58 is an entirely new boat designed from the keel up. The naval architects selected to assist the in-house Fleming design team were Norman Wright and Sons in Brisbane, Australia who, with their special expertise in hull design and tank testing, have been designing semi-displacement passagemakers for more than 100 years.

The latest 3D modeling and CAD software were employed during the design process and a 1/12 scale model was built and tank tested at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania. Several load conditions were simulated at varying speeds to determine resistance, trim and other performance parameters.

Overview Continued...

The Flybridge — Familiar but with More Function

More Amenities

The larger flybridge can accommodate a top-loading freezer, a refrigerator, BBQ and a 13ft (3.9m) Tender. The double Stidd helm seat provides comfortable, adjustable seating.

A fully hydraulic 1,000 lb. Steelhead davit, with power rotation and telescopic boom makes launching and retrieving the tender an easy and safe task, even single handed.

Refined Salon and True Pilothouse with Twin Helm Seats

Among the Innovations being offered on this and all Fleming Yachts is "Burrwood" a composite substitute for teak rail capping. This fiberglass material, manufactured and installed at the yard, replicates the exact appearance of varnished teak without the need for continual varnishing.

Anchor Platform accommodates dual Maxwell RC12 vertical windlasses to handle the 100 lb (45 Kg) stainless steel Ultra anchor and 7/16" Grade-60 stainless steel chain.

Easy Boarding is retained through the wide side deck boarding gates. Port and starboard gates through the Portuguese Bridge lead to the foredeck.

Large Access Hatch into the engine room is just aft of the salon doors.

More Space - The wider pilothouse, has space for twin Stidd helm seats.

Traditional Layout - The "Flow" of the Fleming

The 58 employs much of the same technology used in the Fleming 65 including the Fleming First Mate (FFM) ship monitoring system with two 15" color touchscreens, Hypro fly-by-wire precision power steering, and Seatorque's enclosed shaft system.

Placement of air-conditioning compressors and watermaker are all located in the expanded engine room - leaving the lazarette clear for storage.

Significantly more headroom in the engine room and more space forward and outboard of the engines. The standard engines on the Fleming 58 are the MAN i6-800.

Pilothouse with Enough Space for Twin Helm Seats and a Day-Head

The Fleming 58 provides an ideal intermediate size between the existing F55 and F65, and is easily operated by a couple.

The Cockpit is capacious - larger than the Fleming 55 by 25 sq. ft. (2.3 sq. meters). The built-in cabinets either side of the salon aft doors provide for a variety of options including a fridge/freezer, sink, and an aft control station

Two inward opening gates on either side of the Fleming 58 make boarding easy and safe.

A Built-in settee or matching barrel chairs provide additional seating in the salon, the extra beam of the Fleming 58 is most noticeable in the Salon & Pilothouse.

The Convenience of a Day-Head.

Lockers on either side of the anchor platform and storage bins in the cabin trunk provide stowage for lines and fenders.

The New Full Beam Master Cabin

New Layout - The Fleming 58 offers a variety of accommodation layouts, including a full beam, master cabin with access from the pilothouse.

Engine Room

Standard Power is a pair of MAN i6-800 engines. Standard equipment is the very efficient Seatorque shaft system which transfers thrust from the propellers directly to the hull structure and eliminates the need for cutless bearings and stuffing boxes.

The Tank Tested semi-displacement hull is a modern design based on the well proven Fleming 55. A fine entry and generous flare on the bow makes for an efficient, comfortable, and safe ride.

Spacious walk-in engine room - with access to all equipment and systems.

Proud Craftsmanship and a Passion for Yacht Building.

The Fleming 58 is, of course, built at the renowned Tung Hwa yard in Southern Taiwan, where every Fleming ever built has been constructed, starting with Fleming 50 hull 001 in 1985. Bluewater cruising is a concept that immediately brings dreams of travelling around the world, visiting remote paradises and meeting native welcoming people. When it’s time to realize this dream and choose the proper boat however, only then do you start focusing on priorities: safety first, comfort second, autonomy third. Of course, all these at a cost – potentially performance and the pleasure of sailing. Well that is until now…The new Swan 58 has been designed right around this concept: a proper Bluewater yacht, with all the typical features for this purpose, but without any compromise in terms of performance and pleasure while steering your boat. Welcome to the new Swan Bluewater Concept.

58 is a new number for the Swan family – there has never been a model of this size before, but, like every new Swan, the 58 is the result of a long and accurate process of evolution and development, through many different models around this size. Purpose and Beauty are the main principles we took as references from past models. Every Swan has a proper bluewater ability, it is a fact that many of them are cruising around the World at the moment, but some models are more aligned to bluewater use than others. Consider the S&S designed Swan 57, which raced successfully in the third edition of the Whitbread Round the World Race under the Norwegian flag, with the name Berge Viking, or to the second 57 of the range by Frers with a center cockpit layout.

The second hull built, Anouk, happily cruised around the Seven Seas under her Turkish flag. Or even to the beautiful Swan 59 Gulliver, Italian flagged, which won the first edition of the Round the World Rally for Cruisers in 1992. Talking about beauty, the first to spring to mind is the Swan 55, from S&S, class 1970, especially the yawl rigged version, with unforgettably gorgeous lines. Another timeless beauty is the Swan 56 designed by Frers, beloved by her owners and produced for almost ten years. Last but not least, the recent Swan 60, slim and sporty lines, a fantastic example of an instant classic. It is from all these successful models that the new Swan 58 takes her inspiration and well tested features, confirming 54 years of heritage and unmatched success in producing beautiful bluewater yachts.

The architect

Germ á n frers.

  • A proper Bluewater Fast Cruiser, best of the two worlds
  • Slim hull form and moderate freeboard, discreet but characterized coachroof, a pure beauty in a modern style like only Germán Frers can draw.
  • Easy to manage by a couple without any help, a real easy sailing boat
  • Space on deck and down below able to guarantee comfort and liveability for a lifetime
  • Storage volumes and tank capacity for good autonomy offshore
  • Fast cruiser and good racer under ORC/IRC, with optional Performance Package
  • Owner Forward layout, 3 cabins and 3 heads with 2 showers
  • Optional 4 th cabin amidships for guests or crew, plus optional crew cabin in the forepeak
  • Personalization options for various interior areas

“The next Swan model was designed contemporarily with the smaller sister, the Swan 48 presented to the public last year. It follows the same well proven and successful canoe body design concept; powerful, well balanced and sea kindly shape that would be safe and a pleasure to sail.

On the 58, a true Blue Water yacht intended to sail in comfort anywhere in the world, the forward sections have been softened with the idea of giving her a softer ride upwind against the sea normally encountered in force 4/5 wind conditions.

The final length was settled after a thorough study of the interior volume, this new model, as required to fit three full size en suite cabins plus a possible four, a comfortable saloon, ample galley, together with the space necessary to fit all the complements and machinery required by today high standards of living, and the necessity to accommodate an eventual temporary crew member.

Thanks to the relatively long coach roof, large window areas, numerous hatches, the hull ports and full headroom throughout there is a feeling inside the 58 of being in a much larger luminous, well ventilated yacht. On the other hand, the freeboard is lower than the norm. She is elegant and sleek.

The anchor is stowed on the integral bowsprit and the windlass on a special watertight compartment below deck.

On deck there is the typical array of winches close to the cockpit and the double steering positions. The cockpit sports twin tables surrounded by more than 2 meters long L shaped settees. At the forward end of the uncluttered coach roof there is a dedicated sun-bed.

Regarding appendages, with the standard twin rudders, new model offers four keel options, standard, shallow, telescopic and racing. The racing keel comes with a performance package to match, which may include a square top mainsail, a racing bowsprit, upgrades in rigging and deck gear.

I expect this new model would become a classic that will remain young and active for many years to come”

  • New coachroof style, elongated and signature Swan, but with the same language as 65 & 78. It follows the style introduced by Swan 48
  • Soft and rounded shapes, long coamings to protect the whole cockpit
  • New design for cockpit, extra-large, with twin tables connecting to form a single 10-seat dining table or both convertible separately into sunbeds
  • Protective integrated sprayhood with rigid recessed housing, optional wide bimini and sun awning
  • Steering: winches within reach of helm (5X, all electric std), foldable footrest, seat on top of coamings
  • Optional aft armchair seats, removable
  • Big swimming platform, generous lazarette/tender garage, bench lockers, large forepeak/sail locker
  • Dedicated sunbathing area on coachroof with recessed space for cushions

Starting from an aft cockpit layout and following the evolution of the Swan 48 deck layout, the 58 deck presents some new features never seen on a swan of this size. The concept is easy: to give the maximum comfort and liveability at rest, together with maximum efficiency for short handed sailing, without losing the capability to race with a full crew. Like always, the nerve centre is the cockpit, which has been developed following the Swan hallmark distribution of spaces: aft area dedicated to sun bathing and access to the sea, through a wide platform which gives access to the spacious tender garage, the mid section where all the sailing handling and helmstations are concentrated, and the forward zone, dedicated to guests, protected by the integrated sprayhood and the easy to store bimini. This is a zone where the main novelties are concentrated.

The wide body of the hull at deck level allows an L shaped bench design served by two separate cockpit tables, These feature additional folding leaves to double their size becoming a very large, single table that can seat up to 10 guest in dining mode, and also have the capability to lower to convert the seats into a sunbathing area. With all these different positions, the cockpit can be adjusted to any possible situation, making this area a fantastic platform to enjoy life onboard in any condition. The rest of deck is a combination of comfort areas, like the large sunbathing are in the forward part of the coachroof, and practical features, like the position of jib tracks, which give the best trim angle leaving free passage on the side decks, or the spacious forepeak, plenty of space for storing sails and voluminous gear. All this designed with elegant and discrete lines, in the typical Swan style.

The interior designer

  • Standard layout with owner suite forward and twin guest cabins aft
  • 2 versions for aft cabins, with two separate beds or one generous queen size
  • 3 comfortable heads, 2 with large separate shower box
  • Large saloon area with 3 level of natural light sources, included 4 std hull windows
  • Galley with 360° layout that gives support while heeling, fridge + freezer std, good storage volumes as well as working surfaces
  • 5 nav station layouts, from traditional facing forward chart table to office-like desk
  • Engine room includes space for std genset, state-of-the-art soundproofing
  • Interior style based on concept of moods, mixing different woods and materials
  • Storage volumes throughout the boat, available in different shapes and organization

Designed for proper bluewater cruising, the 58 interiors have been conceived as a combination between luxury and comfortable living spaces, storage and volumes for systems and safety features. The standard layout offers three guest cabins and three heads, with the possibility to add a guest/crew cabin amidships and an extra crew cabin with wc and sink in the forepeak. The 5 + meters long saloon has plenty of natural light and ventilation, with overall headroom above 2 meters plus great views through the large hull windows. The dinette crosses the whole beam, offering a dining area which can seat up to 10 people and a table that can vary its size according to use, facilitating access to the whole seating area. On the starboard side, an array of possible combinations allows the owner to personalize this area to suit his needs. The galley is designed to be practical at anchor as well as under sail, with a 360° design that gives support while heeling and plenty of work surfaces accessible both inside and outside the galley. A special cabinet is dedicated to tableware, complete with a removable tray to facilitate the storage of delicate china on board.  The navigation station is offered in five different layouts, from the traditional facing forward chart table to the office-like desk complete with seat and drawers. The forward cabin provides owners with a proper suite where they can enjoy private time without compromise. The bed is oversized (205×165 m) and complete with 3 integrated removable leeboards that allow its use while sailing; it is fully accessible on three sides. Guests have available two en-suite cabins, offered with two possible layouts: two separate beds or one generous  queen size. Throughout the boat, storage volumes are available in different shapes, from drawers to lockers to below-seat volumes, to allow the better organization of provisions and personal belongings and make your cruises problem-free.

Since its debut, the second-generation 58 Convertible has received a plethora of five-star reviews from journalists, Viking dealers and captains who’ve raved about her bone-dry ride, nimble handling, large cockpit, free-flowing spacious interior and a host of other attributes. And as the first owners began to take delivery, word was spreading throughout sportfishing ports around the globe that the Viking Yacht Company has delivered yet another bluewater champion destined for greatness.

“We’re successful with every model we release, but there are times when you hit one right out of the ball park,” says Viking President and CEO Pat Healey.

The Viking Yacht Company sold more than 110 of its first-generation 58 Convertible from 1991 to 2000, helping build the New Gretna, New Jersey, company into a sportfishing powerhouse. “It was our largest boat at the time and a major milestone for us,” says Pat. Eighteen years later, Viking’s “Gen II” 58 C is once again leaving the competition in its wake and staking its claim as not only a tournament champion but the best high-performance family cruising yacht in its class.

Fishermen and cruisers alike are always hungry for new designs, new ideas and innovation—and Viking has been ringing the dinner bell since 1964. “We are not taking old concepts and knocking the cobwebs off of them,” says Pat. “Our Gen II 58 and all of our boats are new designs.”

An Evolution of the 55

Our new 58 C builds on the success of the Gen I 58, but its pedigree also includes two generations of the 55 Convertible. The latest 55 has dominated the mid-50-foot range since 2012, while the iconic first-generation of the 55 Convertible stands out as one the most important boats in Viking’s storied history.

“Our design, engineering, boatbuilding and tournament experiences over the past 18 years evolved into the 58 that we have today,” says Pat.

The 58 C is longer than our most recent 55 Convertible, but maintains the same 17’ 9” beam. “We believe we have optimized the length-to-beam ratio, giving the 58 C an enhanced ride and additional interior volume,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “This boat can run faster in the same sea conditions because the bottom is softer, more refined and efficient.”

The underbody hull form allows the 58 C, despite its greater size, to achieve the same top speed as the 55 C, and with more efficient 10-cylinder engines.

The performance of the new 58 C has been its most lauded attribute so far. The boat has exhibited an incredible ability to keep spray down, running clean with its molded strakes guiding the water to break just aft of the house windshield. These performance attributes are due, in part, to the aggressive positioning of the strakes as well as their downturned angle and radiused shape.

“It’s more than just the strakes, though,” says Dave. “Other critical factors include the speed and balance of the boat; its center of gravity; trim and shaft angle; and engine installation. All of these elements were scrutinized from the previous models and adjusted over the years. This is what we do—build a better boat every day.”

All areas benefit from the 58 C’s larger size, particularly the cockpit and the salon. The 58 C’s cockpit is 14 square feet larger than the 55 C’s while still providing a full-featured mezzanine with a shaded seating area and beautifully upholstered cushions; freezer, cooler, bait and tackle storage; and engine access.

The main difference in the interior layout of these two boats is that the galley-and-dinette arrangement has been reversed. The 58’s galley is on the port side, while the dinette takes the starboard position. The result: a more streamlined layout with a convenient companionway that extends in a straight line from the starboard-side salon door all the way to the forepeak. Below, the master stateroom is now on the port side with an athwartships bed that allows for increased walkaround and hanging locker space.

Operator Friendly

Ideal for the owner/operator or the owner who wants to utilize a part-time crew, the 58 C benefits from Viking’s industry-leading engineering and technological advancements without sacrificing ease of operation, maintenance and access to operational systems. Our design, engineering and manufacturing teams scrutinized every material and method used to build the boat and each and every system to come away with a lean, efficient and operator-friendly sportfishing yacht. “We were determined to keep weight down,” says David. “When it comes to speed and performance, every pound counts.”

Efficiency can be seen in every area throughout the boat, including the mechanical systems in the engineroom and lazarette. While two generators are offered, the standard 21.5 kW unit delivers more than enough power for everyday uses. That same engineering flexibility exists for gyro stabilization. Although we offer both the Seakeeper SK 16 and Seakeeper SK 9, the latter provides a very high level of stability.

Control of the electrical systems is easily managed, with conveniently located distribution panels in the salon and galley equipped with simple-to-use and clearly labeled conventional switches. Below the water, a series of dedicated pumps for the air conditioning, live wells, washdown and other seawater-fed components have been designed, engineered and installed for durability and longevity.

Cockpit & Mezzanine

At 165 square feet, the 58 Convertible’s cockpit is the largest in its class—a full 12 square feet bigger than its closest competitor. All of the cockpit’s lids open and close via stainless steel gas pistons. Their undersides are rimmed with thick gasketing, and deep gutters around the hatch openings ensure quick drainage. The centerline lazarette houses the Seakeeper and provides access to the steering and drain pumps in the Snow White Awlgripped bilge. The starboard-side full-length fishbox is insulated and removable, while the port side contains two in-deck storage boxes. The forward unit can be rigged as a live well.

The cockpit sole is built with a laminated mounting plate for fighting chair, rocket launcher or table installations. Standard cockpit equipment includes flush-mounted rod holders; a side locker for gaffs; a walk-through transom door with lift gate; rounded coamings and toekick space for comfort and balance; and fresh and seawater wash downs.

A comfortable place to take in the action without interfering with the anglers, the observation mezzanine has Sunbrella covered cushions with an armrest that holds a pair of drink holders. The port-side seating has an underneath freezer with cooler space on the step below. The centerline seating provides access to the engineroom; there’s also a refrigerated drink box undermounted in the step leading to the salon. On the starboard side, you have a tackle cabinet with a push-release door and drawers, as well as an insulated storage box in the step below.

A one-piece anodized aluminum ladder leads to the flybridge. Powder-coated aluminum handrails are conveniently located above the ladder and at the helm. The flybridge’s extended overhang, closed in by an anodized aluminum aft railing, gives you extra room behind the helm and companion seats.

The flybridge features a new design for the center console walk-around helm, with a more radiused shape that gives it a sleek look but also maximizes space. A stainless steel steering wheel and single-lever controls are mounted on a raised teak helm pod. Dual recessed radio boxes with standard hinged split lids flank the wheel. Recessed electronics are installed in the upper console, easily viewable and protected from the elements by acrylic fitted lids with gaskets and stainless steel gas pistons.

Atlantic Marine Electronics and Palm Beach Towers, both Viking subsidiaries, provide custom electronics and tower installations. An optional powered drop-down hardtop box can hold even more electronics.

Guests have their choice of port and starboard lounges, a two-person forward console seat and an aft-facing jump seat on the starboard side. A freezer and a refrigerated drink box are conveniently located in the port and starboard forward corners. A Costa Clear enclosure provides weather protection and gin-clear views.

Salon, Galley & Dinette

Step inside the salon and you immediately notice the spaciousness of the layout. Air conditioning registers are concealed behind the valances to reduce noise and drafts, while enhancing air flow.

High-gloss teak or walnut are offered for the 58 C’s interior. A satin finish is an option. Privacy and comfort are the hallmarks of every Viking yacht interior, and the salon of the 58 Convertible brings these elements to the next level by providing three unique living and entertaining areas. After a day of patrolling the canyons for billfish and tuna, the port-side L-shaped lounge (with underneath storage), which faces the starboard-side HD TV that rises from the starboard-side cabinetry, is a wonderful place to relax and plan tomorrow’s adventures. A hi-lo mappa burl cocktail table is standard and adds versatility to the space.

Sub-Zero under-counter refrigeration makes it easy to make sandwiches or grab snacks while keeping an eye on the action in the cockpit through the salon’s aft window. The galley counters and raised bar are topped with engineered stone that artfully complements the teak or walnut cabinetry and the Amtico flooring. The stainless-steel sink, microwave/convection oven and four-burner electric cooktop are nested for convenience and practicality. Storage is abundant throughout, and when it’s time to sit down for meals or to relax, the bar stools and starboard-side dinette accommodate a crowd with ease.

Accommodations

The three-stateroom, two-head layout offers maximum flexibility for cruising as well as campaigning on the tournament trail. Air conditioning with reverse cycle heat and temperature control; wall-to-wall carpeting, overhead LED lights; decorative under-bed rope lighting; Handcraft innerspring mattresses with quilted designer bed spreads; and recessed stereo speakers are some of the comforts and conveniences found in all three staterooms.

As you would expect from Viking, the master suite is especially spacious and elegant with an athwartship queen walk-around bed and upholstered headboard that faces an HD TV mounted on the inboard bulkhead. Storage includes a credenza, drawers under the bed, end tables, and his and her maple-lined hanging lockers.

The forward guest stateroom comes with either a single walkaround queen or crossover berths. An overhead Bomar foredeck hatch comes with the Ocean Air screen shade system. Rounding out the amenities are a spacious maple-lined hanging locker, reading lights, rope lighting behind the valances, and storage drawers and cabinets.

In the starboard stateroom, you have side-by-side bunks, a maple-lined hanging locker with drawer storage underneath. An optional HD TV can be installed in both guest suites.

The master and guest heads feature Amtico flooring, electric heads, engineered stone countertops and satin nickel hardware. There’s storage in the lower vanity, and the upper vanity includes a mirrored medicine cabinet with doors. The beautifully finished enclosed showers also have satin nickel fixtures and are equipped with a drain that leads to an automatic sump pump in the bilge.

Construction

Our building materials and methods maximize strength in an efficient build that reduces weight wherever possible. Our shipwrights use a modified epoxy resin in the hull skin. The hull is built with resin-infused end-grain balsa core, sandwiched with fiberglass and hybrid carbon-fiberglass fabrics. The integral fiberglass fuel and holding tanks are also resin infused with balsa coring on all

sides for stiffness. The main and intermediate engineroom bulkheads

and the forward bulkheads are built in the same resin-infused process but with composite coring material.

Propulsion & Engineroom

A pair of MAN V12 1400CRM (1400 MHP) engines serve as the standard propulsion package. MAN V12 1550CRM (1550 MHP) and MAN V12 1900CRM (1900 MHP) engines as well as the new MTU 10V2000 M96L (1622 MHP) engines are optional. With the MTUs, the Viking 58 Convertible hits 42 knots at the top end and cruises at 36 knots, depending upon load, sea, hull bottom, propeller conditions and ambient temperatures. Range exceeds 400 nautical miles at cruise speed.

The 58 C maintains Viking’s reputation for engineroom excellence with top-shelf machinery and industry-leading design and engineering. Systems include Delta-T ventilation and water suppression; automatically or manually operated fire suppression tied into the main engine and generator ignitions; integrated engine mounting for efficient transfer of energy to the drive train; and oil changing. Of course, all of these systems are mounted with superb precision and attention to detail in an immaculate engineroom painted with Snow White Awlgrip for visibility and ease of maintenance.

Best Full-Size Cruiser 54-58 Feet

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 12, 2017

Southerly 540

Winner: Southerly 540

With five nominees, the single largest class in the 2018 BOTY competition also comprised some of the biggest boats in the fleet. Given those numbers, it’s little surprise that the Best Full-Size Cruiser 54 to 58 Feet was also one of the most competitive divisions in the entire contest. Sorting out a winner from this quintet of closely matched yachts proved to be a challenging exercise for our panel of judges.

Designed by Germán Frers and built by the venerable Finnish boatyard, the Swan 54 is a bluewater performance cruiser with long-range aspirations that also could be raced in events like the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. “It has a nice layout on deck,” said Bill Bolin. “There were no cabin-top winches, a trend we’re seeing this year that we haven’t seen before. All the lines come back to coamings along the cockpit, which keeps the cabin top clean. It’s easy to sail and trim this boat. The anchor was self-launching and beautifully executed.”

“Under sail, I thought they did a really nice job of hitting that sweet spot between giving you some control over the rig and keeping it simple,” said Tim Murphy. “We’ve sailed other boats with strings all over the place. It’s clear that a very focused design mind was involved in that deck layout.”

Now in business for around two decades, Discovery Yachts is a British builder that has recently undergone an ownership change. “They’ve definitely been in the bluewater cruising space,” said Murphy when discussing the Ron Holland-designed Discovery 58. “I think there’s a lot of promise in this company. They’ve been around awhile anyway, but I think they’re in growth mode and we’re going to see some fresh things from them.

“This yacht has a deck saloon with a raised cabin,” he continued. “It has one of the biggest navigation stations in the entire fleet, forward facing and at eye level with the cabin ports. There are no engine controls at that helm station below, but it’s a boat where there could be. You’ve got very good visibility, and you could make that a pilothouse situation if you brought your engine controls down there.”

Interestingly, the hull of the Moody 54 is the same one employed in the Hanse 575 and 588. “Moodys are now built by the Hanse Group, and what we discovered when we got aboard the 54 is that they’re doing some of the great things Hanse’s doing in terms of their production-line efficiencies and manufacturing processes that have helped them put a lot of value into some pretty sophisticated boats,” said Ed Sherman. “It’s there on the Moody in spades. There are also top-quality component installations. Systems-wise, they use name brands from around the world. But it’s all stuff that most folks that work within the industry are going to be familiar with, which makes it easy to deal with.”

Murphy said, “We’ve seen a trend this year of opening up the side decks, but the Moody was just exemplary. Because it’s a deck-saloon layout, there was a rail inboard that was just beautiful and took you up to the mast. You couldn’t ask for better, smoother handholds with no sharp edges. And then outboard, you have a true stainless-steel rail that goes all the way around the boat. I was really impressed with it.”

In speaking about the Hanse 588, Sherman expanded his thoughts on production building. “This is a high-volume boat, comparatively speaking, and in recent years Hanse has really begun to employ some streamlined manufacturing processes that are now raising the bar,” he said. “The goal is to make the boats as easy to put together for the factory workers as possible, and yet still achieve a high level of quality. Hanse is a company that we’ve had the pleasure of watching evolve in that direction between maintaining a price point and still building a better product that is at a higher degree of fit and finish. This boat did it for me.”

Hanse 588

“Dockside, it’s an attractive boat,” said Bolin. “I like the lines, especially the long, straight, sloping sheer line. The freeboard is quite high, but it gets you that volume inside, for living spaces and tankage and all the other things people want in a big boat like this. Our experience handling the boat was surprising; it snapped-to and did what it needed to do. The 110 hp Volvo pushed the boat along nicely. And when we were motoring, it was very quiet down below. It really struck me as being a solid boat.”

The final boat in this group was the Southerly 540, the signature feature of which is a variable-draft cast-iron swing keel that draws nearly 11 feet when in the full down position and a mere 3 feet 1 inch when raised. “It delivers the best of both worlds,” said Murphy. “When you’re out in the ocean, you want a boat that can handle waves and big seas. But the best part of the cruising life is at the edges where water meets land. The Southerly will take you to both of those places. With the keel down, you’ve got 11 feet under you and all the pointing ability that goes with that. So it’s a deepwater boat but also one you can dry out. It can go places most cruising boats can’t ever go. So the world is very, very opened up.”

“The swinging keel system is very robust,” said Bolin. “It looked foolproof, with a hydraulic ram driving a block-and-tackle system with Spectra line on it. You push a couple of buttons and it goes down to your pre-punched-in level. It takes a few seconds. Under sail, I was amazed that we were under load, closehauled, and [the owner] changed the keel configuration. With all the forces acting on it I didn’t think it would move, but it came right up.”

“The build quality was outstanding,” said Sherman. “It sailed beautifully. It’s a true global cruiser.” For the judges, that combination of traits was irresistible. Which is why they named the Southerly 540 the Best Full-Size Cruiser 54 to 58 Feet.

Viking Yachts 58 Convertible

Viking Yachts 58 Convertible Main

Continuing their recent trend of launching exciting new models, Viking Yachts recently held the world premier of the new 58 Convertible, or 58C, at the 2018 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in November. The new Viking 58C will be the second generation for this model which previously helped secure Viking as the dominant Sportfish builder in the industry when the original 58 Convertible first launched. “From 1991 to 2000 we sold 110 of our 58 Convertibles,” says Viking President and CEO Patrick Healey. “It was our largest boat at the time and a major milestone for us.” Viking looks to continue the same success with this version of the 58C that will benefit from all of the advancements in materials, construction techniques and equipment, and knowledge gained over the last two decades since the first 58 splashed. “She’s a true offshore thoroughbred,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “The boat is ideal for the owner/operator family man or the hardcore tournament competitor. She’ll compete in performance, engineering and interior accommodations with larger boats, certainly those well into the 60-plus-foot range.”

Viking's commitment to building a better boat each day has progressed into some exciting advancements in design and accommodations that certainly have improved the owner's experience. Viking has realized that while their DNA is still that of a hardcore tournament angler, most owners today also want the ability to bring family on board with a certain level of comfort. It's also important to keep a crew well-rested when fishing a lengthy tournament. With the high-end composite materials and resin-infusion process that every Viking goes through, the boat is lighter and stronger resulting in larger windows for more light and bigger living spaces. And with space available already built in for a Seakeeper Gyro,

The fishing spaces aboard the new Viking 58 are simply incredible. With the almost 18-foot beam, the cockpit is spacious and loaded with rod holders, livewells, in-deck fish boxes, and everything an angler could dream up. And measuring at an unbelievable 165 square feet of space in the cockpit, there is plenty of room for maneuvering around the angler battling during a heated tournament. Viking's signature observation mezzanine overlooks the cockpit and provides a great space in the shade to watch the action from the leather seats. Just as exciting as the cockpit it the flybridge of the 58 Convertible which is an oversized space thanks again to the beam and solid construction. The center console walk-around command station on the flybridge is equipped with power-assisted hydraulic steering, single-lever electronic controls with station select and keypad, and electronic trolling valves. 360-degree visibility is excellent in all directions. The captain and companion sit in two pedestal seats. Guests have their choice of lounges that flank the console and an aft-facing jump seat on the starboard side. In true Viking fashion, the accommodations inside are first class. As you walk in from the cockpit, you will immediately notice the L-shaped couch and table across from the entertainment center with flat screen television. The open concept keeps everyone in the salon, galley, and dining area all connected. The galley is stocked with the highest quality appliances and is located across from the starboard-side dinette that comfortably seats four adults. The galley features engineered stone counters, Amtico flooring and a two-stool bar area as well. Under-counter Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer units with deep pull-out drawers, high-gloss teak-faced cabinetry, a four-burner cooktop and a microwave/convection oven will impress even the most discerning chefs that might be on board. Longer fishing excursions require more cold space and more storage to take care of a hungry crew on board and Viking makes sure there is plenty of room. The three-stateroom, two-head layout on the Viking 58 Convertible is customizable depending on what the owner chooses to do with the stateroom layouts. Either the second stateroom can be a forward-placed VIP with queen-sized berth or it can be changed out with cross-over bunks. The master cabin has its head ensuite and features a queen-sized berth and ample storage spaces. There is a washer and dryer placed in between the guest staterooms in the companionway. A Viking Sportfish wouldn't be complete without some serious horsepower and the 58 Convertible is no exception. Owners have a choice of multiple propulsion packages from either MAN or MTU. The first 58 Convertible that will debut at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show comes equipped with MTU V10 2000 M96L 1600HP each diesel engines. With that power, Viking anticipates that the 58C will reach 40 knots and cruise at 35 knots. Captain: Casey Laaro

Captain Casey As a prior captain of historic sailing vessels, Casey brings a wealth of maritime history and a unique perspective to your cruising experience. Casey’s passion for boating began as a young student participating in a sail training program aboard the 137ft sailing vessel Denis Sullivan of his hometown, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Growing from that exposure, Casey has since enjoyed 11 years of magnificent tall ship sailing, traversing the East and West coasts of the U.S., as well as 4 of the 5 Great Lakes, and the Caribbean. While aboard tall ships, Casey has cultivated a love of sharing exceptional sailing adventures with his guests. He also enjoys a broad appreciation for various cultures, experiences, and cuisines, and is not afraid of showing his culinary enthusiasm in the galley as well. Whether he is firing off a 50 pound cannon during a historic reenactment, or a flame grilled captain’s burger for your charter, Casey is sure to make a booming impact on your trip. With his 100ton USCG license, STCW certificate, and copious offshore sailing experience, Casey is ready to show your company all the relaxation and excitement of a sailing vacation in the beautiful USVIs. He and his new wife, Angela look forward to providing your group with a sailing experience to touch your soul, just as the sea has touched theirs. Chef Angela Angela started her life's journey on the Chesapeake Bay, crabbing and oystering with her grandfather. She then found true love in the sea and her partner, Casey, through a career on tall ships. From guiding students through the act of sailing a 200 year old vessel, to dishing up a hearty and delicious offshore meal, she has found joy in every aspect of a water based lifestyle. Her nautical culinary voyage has taken her from cooking in the beautiful Nantucket Sound, to shaking up a delicious Caribbean Hurricane Cocktail on Lake Erie. With a familial background in local agriculture, in addition to water keeping, Angela enjoys incorporating local fresh produce into her creations. She finds herself browsing farmers’ markets wherever she goes, and appreciates the variety of bright colors and flavors brought forth by the freshest ingredients. Angela and Casey met each other six years ago aboard the 122ft sailing vessel Lynx and have become an un-sinkable team since. They are both USCG certified 100 ton Captains with sailing endorsements. As such, they each take part in the responsibilities of both sailing and cooking up magnificent fare on the vessel. While Angela takes the helm of the galley most often, she is not afraid to take the helm of the boat for an adventurous spin. This dynamic couple greatly enjoys sharing their fantastic sea stories, and looks forward to inviting you aboard to cultivate memories of your own!

Born From Experience

The latest model in the Fleming lineup is the Fleming 58. After listening to input from existing Fleming owners and doing extensive research, Fleming introduced the 58 to bridge the gap between the Fleming 55 and the Fleming 65. Born of more than 25 years of experience, and the evolution of the three models which preceded its debut, the Fleming 58 unites the ageless allure for which Fleming Yachts are so well known with a unique personality that’s all its own.

An entirely new Fleming from the keel up, the 58 sits a little higher providing more headroom below the deck which allows a true standup engine room. Engine options for the Fleming 58 include the Cummins QSC 500 common-rail diesel engines, for displacement speeds, or the MAN i6-800 engines, for those interested in cruising sustainably in the upper teens.

The Fleming 58 features an extended water line, through an integrated swim platform, adding to the overall length of the semi-displacement hull and providing a smoother ride. In addition, the 58 also includes a wider beam which is carried further aft, much like the 65. The beam on the Fleming 58 is approximately 18” wider than that of a 55 for a total of 17’6”. The additional beam is felt throughout the boat, and allows two distinct options for the interior layout.

The first option is an expanded version of the traditional Fleming layout found on the 55. This classic design features access from the salon to a central accommodations passageway, with spacious staterooms on either side and a master stateroom forward. The second layout option features a full beam mid-ship master stateroom in addition to the VIP cabin forward and a port stateroom, all of which are accessed through an easily-navigated staircase from the pilothouse.

On both layouts, the wider beam allows a much larger pilothouse which can accommodate twin Stidd chairs and an optional day head. The expanded flybridge can accommodate a larger tender, a larger barbecue than on the 55, and additional refrigerator/freezer space.

The Fleming 58 effortlessly blends the various advantages of the 55 and 65, while adding its own distinctive character to the mix, resulting in a truly defiant modern motor-yacht.

The little (electric) engine that could: The Port of San Diego unveils the nation’s first all-electric tug boat

The 82-foot, all-electric eWolf tug boat, dockside at the Port of San Diego.

The 82-foot eWolf expects to eliminate 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.

Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.

For the record:

1:58 p.m. March 13, 2024 This story has been updated to show the correct amount of government funding that went to the project.

“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”

Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.

Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.

“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”

The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.

Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.

Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.

“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”

The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.

The all-electric eWolf tugboat at the Port of San Diego

Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.

But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.

The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.

In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.

By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.

“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.

Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

A 75-foot-yacht off the coast of Cape Henry in Virginia Beach caught fire, forcing its occupants to jump into the water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Mayday call for "a recreational vessel on fire" came in around 3:30 a.m. Friday, a spokesperson of the U.S. Coast Guard told USA TODAY over the phone.

Motor Vessel Savage, a 75-foot-yacht, was on fire about two miles off the coast of Cape Henry.

Three adults who were on board the vessel jumped into the water and were later rescued by a pilot boat, said U.S.C.G.

Owner of sunken boat leaking oil in Harpswell summonsed

by Ariana St Pierre, WGME

An 80-foot long fishing boat sitting at the bottom of New Meadows River in Harpswell and it's causing concern (Determination Maine).

HARPSWELL (WGME) -- The owner of a sunken 80-foot-long fishing boat that’s sitting at the bottom of New Meadows River in Harpswell and leaking oil is now facing charges.

The boat sank in Harpswell during January’s twin storms and record-high tides.

The harbor master says he hasn't received a plan yet for raising and disposing of the sunken boat.

According to the harbor master, the town is summonsing the boat owner for the Class E criminal crime of abandonment of a watercraft.

The owner could be fined the cost of removal plus 50 percent of that cost.

Removing the boat from the water and towing it piece by piece could cost more than $100,000.

Local news | boat sinks and leaks fuel for 3 days in fort lauderdale’s las olas isles.

Doug Thron was strolling back to his houseboat on the Isle of Venice in Fort Lauderdale when he got a strong whiff of something ghastly.

“I thought ‘My God, what’s that smell?’” Thron said Tuesday.

It turned out to be diesel fuel from a boat that sank to the bottom of the canal on Saturday.

“I couldn’t even stay on my houseboat for the last few days because the smell is so strong,” Thron said. “The whole neighborhood is up in arms about it.”

Worried about the fuel spreading and possibly killing marine life, Thron says he and his neighbors called “everyone under the sun,” including the local fire department, the U.S. Coast Guard and officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Finally, on Tuesday afternoon, Thron says he was relieved to see the salvage company Tow Boat U.S.A. show up to remove the leaking boat.

Fort Lauderdale firefighters checked things out on Saturday after getting a complaint about the boat sinking, Fire Chief Stephen Gollan said

The firefighters alerted the Coast Guard.

“At that time, there were no leaks,” Gollan said. “On Sunday they went out again and noticed it was beginning to leak.”

Coast Guard officials were in touch with the owner by Monday, Gollan said.

“Tow Boat U.S.A. told us on Monday they were still waiting on approval from the owner to move the boat,” Gollan said.

In the meantime, the salvage company is cleaning up the immediate area where the boat sank, Gollan said.

But with tidal surge, some of the diesel fuel and possibly motor oil might have spread into nearby waterways, Gollan said. If the damage is widespread, Gollan said the city would hire a subcontractor to handle the cleanup and bill the owner. But it’s too soon to say if that’s the case, he said.

“We won’t know until the boat’s gone,” Gollan said.

The boat wasn’t towed away until just before 5 p.m.

Thron says he was stunned that no one took action right away.

“A boat like that could probably hold a few hundred gallons of fuel,” Thron said. “I would have thought in this day and age, there would have been a rapid response. To me, it was a huge deal. If a boat is leaking gas into a waterway, the government should be able to step in and remove it and figure out who pays later. Now the fuel is all over the canal.”

But government officials are required to first find the owner, said Mark Ercolin, an attorney specializing in maritime law.

“Here’s how it would usually go,” he said. “ Boat sinks . First question is, who owns the boat? If they can’t find the owner, it becomes a big question of who pays the salvage company. … It’s not done for free.”

Thron says he’s worried about all the fish and manatees that swim up and down the canal. He hasn’t seen any since the boat started leaking on Sunday.

Nearby resident Suzee Bailey wondered why the city didn’t put up signs warning people about the fuel spill.

“We have signs when there’s heavy flooding,” Bailey said. “Do you think it’s healthy to be paddle boarding through those areas? People can smell the fumes, but what about what you can’t smell? My first concern is public safety. How can you worry about what you don’t know about?”

Fatal boat crash launched woman into trees and threw man into water, Florida cops say

A body pulled from trees was among two discovered after a 21-foot boat crashed near southwest Florida’s Little Hickory Bay, according to investigators.

It happened around 3 p.m. Friday, March 15, not far from North Naples, about a 160-mile drive south from Tampa, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release.

“The vessel, carrying two occupants, was traveling north, passing red channel marker 14, when it’s starboard side ran into the mangrove trees, ejecting both passengers,” FWC officials said.

“The unmanned vessel remained in gear until it crashed into the mangrove shoreline, coming to a stop.”

Judy Eaton, 71, of Bonita Springs “was recovered from the mangrove trees where she was pronounced deceased,” officials said.

John Moulder, 71, of Naples, was airlifted by EMS to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, “where he later died from his injuries,” officials said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol may have been a factor, investigators said in the report.

Boaters who use the area regularly told WBBH the couple died at a turn known to be dangerous, but signs marking the hazard vanished during Hurricane Ian , which struck southwest Florida in September 2022.

“Sadly, I was not surprised,” boater Kevin Price told the station. “I had a conversation with another friend recently about this turn specifically, and some of the close calls I’ve seen at this spot.”

UPDATE: 2 dead in boat crash near Little Hickory Bay; state still investigating

fmb_mangroves

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — We now know the two people who were killed in a boat crash late Friday were two adults in their 70's.

Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are still investigating what happened to John Moulder of Naples and Judy Eaton of Bonita Springs.

Officers say their 21-foot Cobia Open Bay boat was near Little Hickory Bay when it crashed into the mangroves.

Eaton was thrown from the boat into the mangroves, where she was pronounced deceased and her body recovered.

Officers say Moulder was recovered from the water and hospitalized but later died from his injuries.

There's no word yet on what caused the crash.
