Vintage Airstream Design Plans

Several years ago while surfing the internet I stumbled up the Happy Janssen’s . At the time they were a nomadic family living in a large diesel motorhome that was powered by veggie oil. I was captivated by their freedom, their simple existence and their commitment to lead an intentional life for Christ. To top it all off the Janssen’s motorhome was stunning! Its was bright, organized and comfortable for their growing family of four.

The following months we followed their journey traveling the country and we dreamed of someday making a similar journey. Meanwhile we continued to work on our debt snowball and I (Nick) began to work on a tiny teardrop trailer that would allow us to start our own adventure on a smaller scale during the summers.

In this general time frame we ran across an interview with a young architect that had remodeled a vintage Airstream to live in full-time. Matthew Hoffman transformed his 70’s Airstream into a masterpiece . Clean open layout that maximized the existing space and utilized every inch of his 25’ Airstream Tradewind. After seeing Matthews Trailer I was instantly inspired by what could be accomplished with a vintage trailer. (and I knew Our family needed one)

So to fast-forward a bit we eventually bought a 1966 Airstream 26’ Overlander . After seeing what could be accomplished with a little creativity and sweat from the Janssens and Matthew’s Airstream inspiration we have lofty plans for our little house on wheels!

I love the challenge of small spaces. I love thinking outside the box and finding solutions. I love that everything has to be multifunctional, intentional and minimal. I love that we have to do more with less.

Here is what we plan to do with our Vintage Airstream the Land Yacht…

Airstream Design Plan

We want a simple open layout with a modern organic feel. We want space to cook ( we love to cook! ), entertain and work. The existing layout of the Overlander’s was a rear bath, with a bedroom separated by an accordion door and a couch/double pull-out bed, small kitchen area and front couch with a fold out table. The setup wasn’t bad but it was a bit compartmentalized and needed to be opened up. Plus the fold out table was a pain to use and we wanted a more permanent table for dining and work.

The Cashios relocated the rear bathroom to the middle of the space, installed electrical appliances instead of gas appliances, and ditched the Airstream’s worn-out aluminum interior walls for 1/8-inch plywood walls. They custom made all the furniture, including the cabinetry in half-inch birch plywood.

Brandon and Gabi Fox—a husband-and-wife team of photographers—transformed this 1972 Airstream Overlander into a mobile live/work studio that lets them pursue their unconventional lifestyle. Because the client planned to use the trailer for entertaining rather than as a primary accommodation, the duo preserved the original open-concept layout and created furnishings that fold away to create a sense of spaciousness inside the compact structure.

A 1984 Airstream Shines With a Steely-Blue Shell and a Cozy Farmhouse Interior

California-based Airstream renovation company Innovative Spaces gave this 1984 triple-axle Excella a complete gut and shell-off renovation for a young family in San Antonio, Texas. The goal was to maximize space in the 34-foot-long trailer and make the Airstream off-grid compatible for weekend getaways and long-term vacations. The exterior of the chassis was updated with a fresh coat of paint in a blue-gray hue inspired by Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans.

The living spaces feature Kahrs’s Oak Johan wood flooring and custom maple cabinetry stained and painted in Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee. A leather sofa lifts to reveal battery storage. Thanks to 200-watt solar panels, a 600aH lithium-ion battery bank, a charge controller, and a 2,500-watt inverter, the 1984 Airstream can go off-grid for three to five days.

A Father-Daughter Duo Lovingly Revamp a ’70s Airstream on Vancouver Island

Interior designer Markie Miller and her dad, Lance Price—the woodworker behind Ironwood Furniture Co.—joined forces to revamp a run-down 1972 Airstream Sovereign Land Yacht. "This was a special father-daughter project for a couple of people who have a habit of falling in love with things that need fixing," Markie says. Inside the 200-square-foot space, Lance’s wood-and-metal furnishings—the banquette, bed frame, shelving, cabinetry, and countertops—take center stage.

Design-build company Innovative Spaces completed a top-to-bottom restoration of this 1973 Airstream Tradewind for a solo adventurer who was ready for life on the open road with her cat and dog in tow. Interior designer Lauren Ravenhill of LF Design Studio worked with the client to find timeless finishes that jibed with her aesthetic, such as maple flooring and shelves.

The 165-square-foot interior includes a variety of thoughtfully arranged areas, including a luxurious bathroom, work desk, bedroom, closet, and kitchen with a breakfast nook. It also features built-in dog and cat beds and a screened-in, drop-down deck.

An Oregon Couple Renovate Their 1966 Airstream Named Gilda

Anna Jacobs and Damian Schmitt embarked on their first vintage Airstream renovation with this 1966 Overlander, which they affectionately named Gilda. The majority of fixtures they chose for Gilda were designed for standard homes, including the kitchen and bathroom sinks, faucets, decorative handles, kitchen accessories, and light fixtures. "We ordered most of our light fixtures from Etsy," Anna says. "Being custom-made, we were easily able to modify them to 12V. That way, they can run off batteries when plugged in and pull less power."

A 1973 Airstream Gets an Organic Remodel Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright

Richmond, Virginia–based couple Grace Kuhn and David Phinney spent 18 months rehabbing their 31-foot-long Airstream before taking it on the open road with their dog. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s philosophy of organic architecture, the renovated trailer features a pared-down interior. "I started resonating with colors like browns and grays found in nature," says Grace. "Nature makes makes people feel calm and collected. I wanted to have a space that gives me that feeling."

Load-bearing drawers pull out from under the sofa, allowing the lounge to transform into a full bed that can sleep two adults. The drawers and cubbies underneath offer concealed storage for the couple’s solar batteries, blankets, and other miscellaneous items.

A Canadian Couple Revitalize a 1970s Airstream Using Salvaged Materials

Designer and builder Ryan Hanson and his wife, Catherine Macleod, turned a 1970s Airstream into a tiny getaway for their family. The vintage trailer’s interior was reimagined using primarily reclaimed materials, including old-growth Douglas fir for the flooring and cedar sawmill offcuts for the ceiling. Ryan crafted the built-in sofa using more cedar sawmill offcuts, while Catherine sewed the drapery and upholstery using fabric she collected from various thrift shops and Ikea.

Hexagonal mosaic tile covers the floor and shower walls in the renovated bathroom. The vanity is made from a maple slab, and the sink and fixtures are copper.

A ’71 Airstream Overland International Gets a Gleaming Top-to-Bottom Overhaul

The owners of Traverse Design + Build—based in Sun Valley, Idaho—took on a personal project, completing a top-to-bottom overhaul of a 27-foot 1971 Airstream Overland.

The updated interior features engineered maple floors, white Ikea cabinetry, stainless-steel counters, and Tiffany-blue upper cabinetry. A two-burner stove, refrigerator, and sink give the owners a fully operational kitchen to prepare meals. Meanwhile, a sofa that folds out into a full-size bed with storage underneath was built across the aisle.

This Chic Camper Will Make You Want to Be an Airstream Dweller

Art teacher Ellen Prasse and her partner, artist and writer Kate Oliver, transformed their lives in 2014 when they renovated their own 1977 Airstream. The personal project led them to launch their own business, The Modern Caravan, where they renovate Airstreams on a client-by-client basis. Spoonflower Boho Tile Blush Dark wallpaper by Holli Zollinger adds a pop of color in the kitchen, which features new cabinetry and appliances, including a Furion 2-in-1 range oven.

Affectionately named Birdie, the 154-square-foot Airstream was treated to a sleek overhaul with an abundance of storage hidden beneath custom furniture. The convertible dinette, which fits five to seven people, can be transformed into a large family sofa or a queen-size bed.

A Couple Revamp an Old Airstream Into a Charming Workspace and Home

Atlanta-based couple Sheena and Jason successfully revamped a 1975 Airstream, also known as Mavis, to serve as their "rolling living and workspace." Because Sheena and Jason both work remotely, the duo made sure to create two dedicated work areas—Sheena’s desk is near their bed at the front of the trailer, while Jason’s work area is separately located toward the back.

It took Sheena and Jason 10 months to complete the Airstream renovation. "Originally, our trailer was a rear-bath unit with twin-size beds," Sheena says. "We relocated the [sleeping area] to the front of the trailer; it’s the sunniest spot and definitely makes for a great space for our dog to bask in the sun for his afternoon naps."

A Landscape Architect’s 1959 Airstream Gets a Splash of Color

Landscape architect Andreas Stavropoulos transformed a 1959 Airstream that he bought off of Craigslist into a live-in structure situated in the garden of a co-op in North Berkeley, California. With just 150 square feet to work with, Andreas "jettisoned the 1950s colors and wall-to-wall linoleum, and moved in with cork flooring, track lighting, fresh, colorful paint, and custom- designed cabinets and furniture to fit the interior topography," he says.

Stavropoulos stripped the original "flesh-toned" paint to reveal the Airstream’s aluminum interior. Under the bed, a large drawer creates a storage area for the resident’s clothes.

A Converted Airstream Holds a Kitchen Island and a Hidden Murphy Bed

Japanese architect Toshihiko Suzuki of Tokyo-based design firm Atelier OPA applied his small-space sensibility to this gutted Airstream. A steel-clad central island in the center of the space can transform into a cooking surface with a hidden sink and hot plate, a dining table for six, and even two twin beds simply by opening or expanding various drawers and surfaces.

Much like traditional Japanese futon beds, the mattress hidden in the table folds out for a softer place to sleep. The architect paid close attention to small details, like reading lights at each bed.

The seller has not used this RV for camping. Was purchased as a project to complete but decided life had enough stuff going on, so this unit is being sold "as is." The body of the airstream has a few nicks, but overall the body is in really good condition. The RV has no water damage, and all seals seem very good. The interior is all original and it's amazing how well it has held up. The curtains will probably need replaced and the bathroom will need some work. The A/C, heat and electrical components have not been tested. Unit does not have any propane in the tanks, tanks are older and probably need replaced. Stock #317211 Make it Your Own! 27 Foot! The absolute perfect size, not too big, but yet big enough, at 27', this Airstream can fit into almost all campgrounds, and this International Land Yacht Series was one of their flagship production trailers back in 1972. Step back in time when quality meant quality, and Airstream made their trailers last. It's amazing how well these Airstreams hold up even after 50 years. This 1972 27-foot International Land Yacht is overall in good condition. Our seller went back and forth on fixing it up or letting someone else use their imagination to make the trailer their own. Eventually, the seller decided to clean it up, leave the original equipment intact, and let someone build their Airstream to fit their own personality and lifestyle. This Airstream has good bones, not beat up or banged up, tires have less than 1,000 miles on them, and are right at two years of age. The unit was recently moved to its current location and was pulled about 50 miles without any problems. Nothing has been used in the RV for several years, so the seller is not sure what works or does not work, so you are buying an RV that needs work to be completed and ready for everyday use. RESERVE IS OFF. I'm moving again and can't afford to take this with me. I originally purchased this airstream as a project to full-time in. Plans have changed and need to put the dream on hold for another couple years till I can really afford to get this done right. I will be happy to guide you in the right direction for your own restoration, and even offer my services to get anything you need done. (I work for a tiny home building company) The airstream is currently gutted. I took out panels in most of the problem areas to inspect wiring and insulation, all looked good, so decided to keep it. Belly pan was dropped and insulation was cleared, so you can easily repair outriggers (the front and rear sections of the frame need work, but structurally it is sound to tow), put in a new tank, new insulation, and plumbing if that's what you're planning to do. The long top panel is currently out as we dropped in new fans and needed access to 12v power. I started to do new subfloor in the front, but didn't finish - you may want to also do the rear section. The front of the frame/tongue has also been reinforced by the previous owner. The body panels are not in perfect condition, the majority of marks on the body can be buffed out. Please see photos, tried to document the process as I went, however I encourage you to come check it out for yourself. • Clean title, registration up to date. • I tow with a old 1/2 ton chevy truck and it trailers great. I've put over 1,000 miles since i've had it.• All 110 and 12v electrical works as it should.• A/c runs cold like a champ. • New fantastic were fans installed with rain sensors ($500 by themselves). • New skylight installed. (~$100 by itself) • Black tank was drained and cleaned. • Brand new tires ($500 by themselves) • New tongue jack ($100) This airstream is being sold AS-IS due to the nature of it being an in-progress restoration. I also have a equalizer hitch which I can include for the BIN price. I will include shipping within 350 miles. 1974 Airstream 27 Overlander , We have a 1974 27 ft. Airstream Overlander Land Yacht Travel Trailer for sale. We purchased the trailer with the thought of putting it on a lot as a vacation spot. However, plans changed and we have decided to put this up for sale. We bought the Airstream last year and it's in good condition but needs a few updates and has been sitting for a while. I was told when I purchased it that the appliances all worked but I have not tested them. The A/C does blow ice cold, which is important in Florida. There are some things worth noting, that we do know. There are awnings on both sides of the trailer, but the one on the front, has a seam that needs to be re-stitched, and the other side is fine (the awning fabric looks to be fairly new). There are a couple of dings on the aluminum, one on each front lower corner and one in the rear right upper corner (see photos) The floors have stick on linoleum flooring which some of the tiles are peeling up on the edges. The light switch in the bathroom is stuck in the on position (We do have a new switch for it). The battery is brand new and the electric jack works. We do have a clear Florida Title. $7,400.00

Vintage 1977 Airstream Overlander 27 ft.

If you are looking for a clean, comfortable, and mostly original airstream this is the one for you. I'm the third owner of this well maintained trailer. I have the original owners manual,, misc. work papers, and an original picture when purchased all of which will be given to new owner. I bought this 27 ft. trailer from a friend of mine 4 years ago who's knowledgeable and experienced with airstreams and trailers. He meticulously maintained this one mechanically and cosmetically. The bed was converted to a larger, more comfortable therapeutic mattress, upgraded carpet and curtains, am/fm cd stereo, and many extra nice amenities were added when he purchased it. Unfortunately, I am not able to travel with this airstream as much as I intended and would like to see it go to a new home that will get more use. I do move it from time to time to clean it. I had new tires installed a few years ago (still no wear), new battery, axels/bearings checked/repacked, and a new automatic tongue lift to make the connection process much easier. The shell is in very good condition for it's age..just small dings, I suspect from hail damage over the years. It needs a good cleaning/wax job and you will see the shine pop. To the best of my knowledge everything works even though I've never tested or used the original A/C. The portable A/C (also included) works just fine. There is also a portable heater, microwave, smoke alarms, extra fans, and plenty of storage/drawers/closet space. The couch also fold out into a bed. This airstream has lots of character and I know the new owner will appreciate it. It would be tough to find another match like this one! It's smoke free, rust free, and ready for the road.. Airstream still sells the panels if you wanted to replace them. Inside will need some fixing up also.Camper hasn't been used in a wile so may need some minor plumbing and electrical work.We have never used the camper so selling as a project.
