Fan Tail  was launched in 2003 and has undergone two maintenance appointments throughout her life: the first in 2011 when the cockpit was extended now featuring an expansive cockpit with swim platform, as well as two centerline transom doors, and a second in 2020 and a most recent, July of 2023 a 1/2 tower with helm station was added. Both were conducted in the United States. With an Interior volume of 125 GT and a three stateroom layout, FanTail can accommodate up to six guests. She also has accommodations for 3 crew members in two separate quarters aft. 

Exterior and naval architecture drawn up by Jack Sarin and an interior designed by her builder, West Bay Sonship Yacht. In terms of performance, Fan Tail is powered by twin CAT engines that give her a cruising speed of 22 knots and a top speed of 28 knots.

Cockpit: The vessel comes with the standard layout with all equipment found in good condition. This layout includes a large cockpit with space for a fighting chair centerline. Fish wells are aft to port and starboard with live wells forward. The ice chipper discharges into the starboard fish well and the port well is refrigerated. Deck lockers line the perimeter with the tackle center aft to starboard. This area has a removable sun shade and the crew area door is centerline forward.

Aft Deck: This is a good size and comes with a large built-in seating aft with a teak dining table and chairs. There is a built-in wet bar forward to port with a sink and fridge. The television is installed above the bar as well. There is a stairway to starboard with access to the flybridge. Salon entry thru double teak varnished doors. Control stations are hatched to port and starboard forward. This area is well protected by the fly bridge overhang.

Fore & Side Decks: The fore deck features windlass installed centerline forward with a deck hatch for access to the chain locker. A large sunpad is also featured. The side decks allow easy access forward and aft with a starboard side entry door into the galley/dining area.

Pilot House & Boat Deck: The helm was found on the centerline with all gauges and controls easy to hand. A single helm chair is just aft with setee and table aft to port. There is a day head opposite to starboard the stairway is forward. The boat deck has ample room for tender and personal watercraft centerline with the davit to port. 

Interior: A good-sized salon with large windows and storage. There is a large sofa aft to port with a coffee table. The TV is installed on a powered lift opposite to starboard with the entertainment equipment stored in cabinetry below. Forward of the salon to port is the formal dining area, with a table and seating for 6. There is excellent storage along both sides of the salon and dining area in way of built in cabinetry. There is a starboard side companionway with fridge drawers, ice maker and wine chiller. The galley is to port with subzero refrigerator/freezer and galley appliances. The galley is open and features large windows and door. Second dining area is forward with barstools and a granite top.

Guest Accommodations: Guest accommodations are accessed via the starboard side stairwell leading down from the galley area. Aft is the full beam master stateroom that comes with a king sized bed installed on the centerline, excellent storage in lockers and drawers with the head and shower accessed forward to starboard. A tub is in the master head. The port stateroom comes with single berths to port and starboard. The head is a shared head accessed from the companionway that can also act as a day head. The vip stateroom has a queen berth forward on the centerline with the head/shower aft to starboard. Good storage in lockers and drawers and the TV is mounted aft.

The washer and dryer are installed in the guest companionway to starboard.

Crews Accommodations: This area is accessed from the cockpit through a watertight door that opens into the centerline aft passageway. The port cabin has a single berth with the head forward while the starboard cabin has upper/lower berths and the head aft. Switch boards are forward as is the engine room watertight door.

Machinery Space: This area is accessed from the crew companionway, head room is ample and there is good access to all of the machinery to carry out service work.

Offered for the first time in almost thirty years. “Miriam” is a classic Ted Geary Style 1946 (post war) 79ft. Fantail Motor Yacht. She was constructed in the Pacific Northwest by J.M. Martinac Shipyard in Tacoma WA. The current owner has been going through a continuous 26-year refit to bring Miriam to its current level. Updates include extensive woodwork, bright work and now mechanical reworking. The owner personally maintained the boat cosmetically to the highest of standards.  Interior and exterior finishes should be considered exceptional. She features at deck level a large airy salon, followed by a galley and dining area. There is a raised Pilothouse with access to weather decks port and starboard.  Below decks are four staterooms and four heads (refer to accommodations) with Fore & Aft  access to the walk-in engine room.

In 1972 Miriam was converted from a single engine vessel to a twin screw Caterpillar powered Motor Yacht by Floating Marine Ways, Inc.

A full beam engine room is amidships with built-in cabinets, a work bench and ample elbow space for onboard projects, houses a huge and highly dependable 380 HP Caterpillar D-353 TA 6-cylinder 4-cycle diesel engine and several Gensets. The upper deck features a complete helm station with a large observation / sunning settee with a Bimini top that is forward of an extended boat deck area with davit, an electric windlass, a tender, and ample deck storage space. A rare embodiment of yachting’s original allure, this classic fantail is of the era when American craftsman fashioned select timbers into yachts of custom designs that were built to serve a family from one generation to the next. Over the decades Creole has been proven by numerous voyages from the U.S. to Hawaii, the South Pacific, the Caribbean and a number of Atlantic crossings, and two years ago received significant upgrades and interior refitting. The refit work included a major electrical overhaul and upgrade, new plumbing for the domestic water system, three new Head Hunter heads, new GE galley propane stove and microwave, new mattresses and bedding, new drapes and carpet. Reflected by a total of $270,000 in reductions to the asking price since listed, the exterior of this stately yacht needs refinishing and a few feet of deck planking on the port side needs to be addressed, and the cap rail near the starboard bow needs to be renewed. However this classic voyager is certainly well worth the attention required to restore her traditional good looks, and the generous reduction in the asking price makes the proposition quite practical.

This advertisement has been prepared for and posted by a private agent of the owner (vessel is no longer with Popyachts) . Every effort has been made to fully describe the various details of the vessel which is on a private lift in Fairview Beach, Virginia. Photographs document the classic lines, restoration and performance. The vessel is a privately owned, fully restored, 1973 Bertram 25’ Flybridge, purchased by the owner in 1998. It should be noted that the owners have invested in excess of $40,000 above its original purchase price in upgrades and restoration. Documentation of all repairs, upgrades and restoration is available for potential purchasers to review. History of the Vessel Since 1998, the vessel has been housed at the owner’s private deep-water lift and has been professionally winterized, shrink wrapped and stored on her lift each winter. Owners are amenable to sea trials and private dock viewing. Mechanical and Cosmetic Restoration and the Performance of the Vessel The Rainmaker has a V-berth with stand-up head for overnight outings. Her mechanical restoration included the installation of brand new twin Mercruiser 135 engines, outdrives and lower units whose out-of-crate installation occurred in 2004. The engines have accumulated less than 200 hours since that time. In addition, the flybridge and lower cabin helm were outfitted with all new throttle cables, steering cables and shift cables. The vessel can comfortably be controlled from either the lower helm or upper flybridge. The owner had the boat’s props properly pitched and “dialed-in” so the vessel cruises comfortably at 18kph. The entire exterior has been professionally restored. Bertram is renowned for their high quality manufacturing standards and as such, this vessel’s hull is crafted of high-impact, multi-laminate fiberglass. After purchasing the vessel in 1993, the owners restored the vessel to “as new” condition. The original existing gel coat was professionally removed and the hull was restored with an epoxy primer coat and lustrous new top gel coat which is evident in the photos provided. This restoration included all topside, flybridge and fantail surfaces as well as all non-slip surfces of the vessel. All of the mechanical refits and cosmetic upgrades and restoration work was performed by professional marine mechanics at the Fairview Beach Yacht Marina in King George, Virginia under strict quality control conditions. The owners are happy to provide references for the quality of the workmanship. Asking Price: $24,500 (it should be noted that this vessel has been on the market a few years--it remains in pristine condition; however, interested parties have had difficulty obtaining financing due to her age so she remains actively for sale. SPECIFICATIONS

The Fantail Series is available in three configurations; The DS (Daysailor), WE (Weekender), and the ST (Sail Trainer). All three feature classic good looks, "sit in" not "sit on" sailing, efficient high performance and a "green" sailing experience.

The hull form is a contemporary shape without extremes, designed to deliver predictable and rewarding performance. She has a fine entry forward with plenty of hull volume in the topsides to properly balance the full aft sections. Through her mid body the sections are vee'd for a sea kindly motion. Running aft the sections are broad and flat for great stability and off the wind performance. The freeboard must be carefully balanced to provide adequate sitting headroom below, a dry ride on deck and exceptional good looks. The Fantail strikes the perfect balance. The Fantail is not a "retro design" or bare bones, white-knuckle race boat, but rather a well- mannered, high performance, contemporary design with classic lines.

On deck the Fantail series features a large and comfortable "sit in" cockpit. The cockpit is nearly 9 feet long offering plenty of room to stretch out or bring a few guests along for a quiet evening sail. The cockpit seats are contoured with high seatbacks for comfort. The traveler is aft for the best mainsail trimming position and keeps the cockpit clear and uncluttered. A self-tacking jib with double ended 2:1 sheets led aft provides efficient yet effortless upwind sailing. The sprit for the asymmetrical spinnaker is under deck with all controls led aft to the cockpit. The DS and WE are both elegantly trimmed in teak highlighting their classic sweeping lines, while the ST is finished with low maintenance materials befitting the ruggedness required for sailing school use.

The fractional rig is large yet manageable, featuring a self-tacking jib for efficient and effortless upwind sailing. A sail area to displacement ratio of 26 guarantees rewarding light air performance. Balanced by 1200 lbs. of ballast in a very low center of gravity bulb design, the Fantail will also stand up to a breeze. Off the wind, extend the sprit and set the large asymmetrical spinnaker for maximum performance without the need of a large crew. The Fantail DS and WE are fit with a carbon pocket boom with integral mainsail cover and lazy jacks for convenient mainsail handling. Efficient performance and ease of handling are the hallmarks of the Fantail rig.

The interior of the DS and ST offer the basics: Sitting headroom, 48 qt. Igloo cooler with 12 VDC refrigeration, AM/FM/CD player, a portable marine head, two seats, a double v-berth with convenient storage for daysailing gear, and simply detailed curved, varnished trim. The Fantail WE offers additional headroom, additional trim detail, a simple galley unit with alcohol cooktop and sink and a marine head with holding tank, ideal for that quiet weekend get away to your favorite harbor.

The Fantail Series are built with low HAPS resins and processes that not only provide great physical properties but are also environmentally conscious. The Fantail continues to offer a green advantage as a daysailor/overnighter with non-polluting electric propulsion. Enjoy quiet motoring out of your favorite harbor in harmony with the environment. Electrically powered by a Torqeedo 2R Cruiser motor with remote forward/reverse and throttle allowing you to power in silence with only the sound of the bow wake. Once under sail, enjoy a cold beverage and some nice music, completing the perfect sailing experience. Dockside, the batteries are charged with the standard, efficient ProMariner charger that maintains both the 24 volt engine system and the on board 12 volt bank. If kept on a mooring select either the solar panel charging system or the wind generator system so your Fantail is always ready to go.

DEERLEAP 80 ft' Custom HOFFAR-BEECHING Fantail Yacht 1929

  DEERLEAP was Poster Girl for the VICTORIA CLASSIC BOAT FESTIVAL -SEPT 1,2,3, 2023!! The show was a great success and DEERLEAP was THE popular yacht to visit.

  DEERLEAP IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR SHOWINGS BY APPOINTMENT AT HER MOORAGE IN PORT ORCHARD, WA. She has a planned maintenance haul out in May, and will depart for the Broughton Islands, Northern BC in early June.  Showings can be arranged during haul out in May in Port Townsend, WA., and by appointment while cruising during the summer.  She will return to her moorings in early September.

DEERLEAP  was built in Vancouver, BC, by Hoffar-Beeching boatyard, later Boeing Canada, for Colonel McLimont, the President of Winnipeg Power and Light. She was originally powered by Hall-Scott gasoline engines. She was designed with exceptional viewing capabilities aboard a comfortable and elegant cruiser, built specifically for excursions to Alaska. She has cruised extensively from Mexico to Alaska by the present owners.

Her original design, which remains mostly intact today, specifically on the main deck, included a large combination observation saloon and formal dining room, galley forward, and up 2 steps to the spacious Pilothouse. A day-head has been added just aft of the Pilothouse.  Aft of main deck living area are French Doors opening to a spacious covered aft deck with a central teak dining table and luxuriously, newly Sunbrella covered, circular seating area surrounding the broad fantail.  DEERLEAP passed through several owners, including being conscripted during World War II, wearing Navy Gray paint, and designated as B154 during her service and having huge, heavy-duty VIVIAN 120HP slow turning diesels installed.  After the War, she was purchased by well-known mining engineer Campbell Church, where she joined his charter fleet of famous yachts, and frequently hosted luminaries including Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and John Wayne, financier Andrew Mellon Jr., and in the 60s, hosted the Kennedy Family and various movie stars in Southern California. By the 80s DEERLEAP had fallen into disrepair and faced the auction block, a US Federal Marshall's Sale, where the present owner acquired her... and was actually owned by the US Government, who controlled the boat, she sat 4 years unattended, until all of the legal matters were resolved!! ... some 40 years ago. (Civil foreclosures settled by US Marshall's sale do NOT clear Jones Act issues.) Since acquiring DEERLEAP in the 80s, she has been the major focus of the owners to restore her and significantly improve her throughout. The lower deck stateroom accommodations have been very professionally reconfigured, and the twin GARDNER 6LX engines later replaced the "screamin Jimmies" to make her a very quiet and efficient cruising yacht. The owner comments on the prime aspect of the yacht he enjoys and respects, more than any other, is her seaworthiness.  " I've had the boat lying completely on her sides along the coast of Oregon and I never doubted her for a moment!! She was built to go anywhere in any conditions." "Her Roaring Twenties charm has always attracted me" said the owners late wife. "It's that, more than anything else, that I think is missing in boats today." 

Note, much of the fine collectibles, sterling ware and serving sets, China dishes, art and scrapbooks of history on the yacht will accompany her sale.

DEERLEAP has been maintained to Bristol Condition-yacht standards by her present owner, with a bottomless checkbook budget to continuously improve and tweak her presence. She is such a regular winner at the Classic Yacht Association Annual Wooden Boat Festivals, the owner does not campaign her any longer, to give others a chance at winning!!  She is also no "Boathouse Queen" either, DEERLEAP has been cruised every year for 16 to 20 weeks up to the Broughton Islands of Northern BC, and occasionally Alaska. DEERLEAP was hauled in the Spring of 2023 to prepare for summer cruising. A high-level Valuation Survey was completed during the haul out in 2021, no issues surfaced on that survey. DEERLEAP was "wooded", ie the hull sanded to bare wood, and completely refastened from the waterline up, with galvanized steel fasteners, about 10 years ago. She has a stunning and flawless white hull finish now.

This yacht can easily be handled and moored by a competent skipper and a line handler. With her twin-screws, hydraulic bow-thruster, port and starboard doors from the Pilothouse, and adjustable Boarding Ladders (Passerelles) both Port and Starboard, with lines prepared prior to landing, a line handler can be landed onto the dock and the skipper can then maneuver the vessel alongside and drop bow, stern and spring lines to secure the yacht.

+ VESSEL WALKTHROUGH

Boarding access from dockside or from a tender is via Port and Starboard, fully adjustable Boarding Platform with Stairs and handrails, Passerelles, midship. Once aboard, you are greeted with wide teak decks which provide access to the main cabin, Pilothouse, and forward to the expansive foredeck with teak Scuttle access to the Crews Quarters, Engine Room, and the anchor windlass and comfortable cushioned seating around the bow. Aft there are weather doors protecting the access to the expansive covered (boatdeck) fantail aft deck and seating area.

MAIN DECK Access to the maindeck cabin is via a single starboard side door, forward of midship, at the Galley.  Right and up two steps is the expansive Pilothouse with Port and Starboard doors to the main decks, with complete electronics and navigational suites. A wide (roll and pleated with buttons) leather seat is one step up behind the steering station for the skipper and visitors.

Immediately behind the PH on the main deck is the Day Head, forward of the Galley.

The Galley is compact and efficient featuring a period O'Keefe & Merritt 4 burner propane with electric oven stove, microwave oven, Broan trash compactor, a full household sized LG refrigerator and freezer, generous cabinetry and storage with a custom spice cabinet. To port is the galley sink with an expansive window for natural lighting and views for the Chefs.

Midships is the Dining Salon with a large mahogany period table and seating for 8, highlighted by a period crystal chandelier. Teak cabinetry surrounds the dining area forward and to starboard with extensive storage and display areas for silver service and serving pieces, period Espresso Maker and a fine collection of cut crystal liquor serving decanters. There is a full set of China dinnerware with ships name/ logo is included.

Further aft is the Salon featuring the bannistered stairway access to the lower deck, followed by more cabinetry with a "pop-up" TV to the starboard side, and large overstuffed couch, and another custom cabinet hosting the pop-up computer center. Beveled glass and teak French doors provide access to the expansive covered aft deck and fantail seating area. The aft deck is protected by custom Eising Glass curtains which roll up for summer cruising.

LOWER DECK- Forward Beginning forward, the crew and engine room access is forward on the foredeck, accented by the large teak Scuttle with retractable top, and double doors facing aft for weather protection. Entering the Scuttle there is a 10 step angled ladder down into the Crews Quarters and storage area landing.  Forward, in the forepeak, is a storage area aft of the chain locker. Next is a single crew berth to Port with generous drawered storage under. Opposite, where there were 2 additional crew bunks, now features dry goods storage racks, in the forward section, the Icemaker and small Freezer. Aft to the engine room bulkhead is the stacked BOSCH washer and dryer, and on centerline, the electrical control panel and inverters. A center insulated door provides access to the full beam, stand-up engine room.

LOWER DECK- Staterooms From the Salon midships, proceeding down the bannistered circular stairway provides access to the 4 staterooms companionway. To the right and forward is the generous, full beam, Master Suite complete with full ensuite head and shower. Centerline Island Queen berth. This suite features, both port and starboard (his and hers), a corner louver ventilated and full length built in teak hanging lockers, with automatic lighting when opened, slide out hanging racks, and 9 drawers for storage. Natural lighting is provided by active portholes port and starboard. Just aft of the Master and to Starboard, and then to Port opposite the stairway, are two twin bunk staterooms with crossed-over/under bunks and hanging lockers and a vanity/shaving sink. Aft of the stairway and to Starboard is the shared head and shower for the three lower staterooms. Further aft, and on centerline, is the full beam (in the curved fantail area of the hull) expansive stateroom featuring raised, generous twin bunks both port and starboard. There is generous drawer storage under the two bunks and louvered hanging lockers on either side of the entry door. A VIP stateroom if you will.

BOAT DECK Access to the Boat Deck is via an angled ladder with teak treads, 10 steps to the slider opening. A safety rail surrounds this access on the Boat Deck.  All the way forward is the raised Pilothouse which houses the retractable mast, various antennae and search lights. Just aft of the Pilothouse is the exhaust Funnel decorated with the ships logo and signal flags. Behind the funnel is a 16 CUFT chest freezer, followed by the custom, twin 5 gal., propane bottle storage cabinet. Proper ships lifeboat type, twin beam davits with 12v electric cable winches are placed aft for handling tenders.  The Ranger sailing dinghy and Avon RIB and secured on custom bunks, port and starboard. Forward to starboard is the manual davit for raising/adjusting the boarding ladder. There are port and starboard large deck boxes, placed midship on the boat deck, for dry storage.

Several Cornell Lab of Ornithology services will be unavailable beginning March 19 through 6:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern time on March 21 . This is a one-time disruption while we migrate more than 1.6 billion eBird observations and additional project data to new servers. After the move, our websites will have improved reliability, stability, and room to grow. Thank you for your understanding during this outage.

Don’t worry, your data (checklists, media, Bird Academy courses, Merlin life list, etc.) will be safe during the migration and will be unaffected when we come back online.

Unavailable: The following websites and services will be down during this period:

• eBird.org , including eBird portals, eBird Alerts, the eBird API, eBird Science, and data downloads
• Macaulay Library
• Birds of the World

Partially affected: Several Cornell Lab projects will remain up but services that require a login will be unavailable:

• Bird Academy login and store will be unavailable. Users will be able to access most course materials if they were logged in to the site before the outage. Snap ID quizzes will not function during the outage.
• NestWatch and Project FeederWatch login and data entry will be unavailable both on the website and the app. Please record your data on paper and enter it after the outage ends.
• eBird Mobile app : The Explore and My eBird functions will not work during the outage. You can use the app to create checklists and then submit them after the outage ends. Your eBird data will be safe.
• Merlin Bird ID app : Sound ID will continue to work, as well as Photo ID, Step-by-Step, and Explore, using your recent locations only. You will not be able to save sightings, refresh your life list, update your location, or log in to your account. These functions will return when the outage ends and your data will be safe.

What Can I Do During the Outage?

Go out birding.

• If you already have Merlin Bird ID app installed, you can still use it for some purposes. Though you won’t be able to update your location, save sightings, or refresh your life list, the ID functions will still work with your saved locations, and you can still browse species using Explore Birds
• If you already have the eBird Mobile app installed on your device, you can start eBird Mobile checklists during the downtime and submit them once eBird is back online. Learn how to Enter Sightings with eBird Mobile
