Classic Series

In 1991 Vicem made the biggest splash of all with the introduction of their Classic series. For a builder in Turkey to produce the epitome of classic Down-East stylings struck some as presumptuous. To endure challenging North Atlantic conditions season after season (and some of the most demanding captains in the world) traditional Maine lobster boats must please both the eye and the sea. Vicem found the Mediterranean offered similar challenges and that our Classic series was the solution.

Bahama Bay Series

Vicem’s Bahama Bay line is our first designed from the keel up around Volvo’s IPS System. This operation simply involves applying layers of thin solid-wood veneers, oriented at different angles, to be saturated by epoxy over a computer-designed mold. This marriage of engineered woods with formulated resins yields a hull that is lighter, stronger, and more durable than traditionally built fiberglass boats. To this are added the widely acclaimed advantages in comfort, noise reduction, and insulation from the elements.

Vicem Yachts

Vicem Yachts is a builder of cold-molded wooden, classic luxury motor yachts, sports fishermen and coastal cruisers, located in Istanbul, Turkey. With more than 150 yachts delivered since it was founded 23 years ago, Vicem ranks as one of Turkey’s largest yacht builders.

History of Vicem Yachts

Founded by Sebahattin Hafizoglu, a businessman from Vicem, Turkey, the shipyard delivered its first yacht in 1991. Hafizoglu had a love for the Turkish “Gulets”, the traditional schooners of the Bosporous. Using their design as a foundation, he combined his concepts with state-of-the-art cold-molded wood and epoxy techniques to create a new line of classic custom yachts.

Notable Vicem Superyachts

Among Vicem’s more noteworthy designs is the 32-metre Vicem 107 Cruiser, which was introduced in November 2013 during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The company also introduced the 46-metre 46 Vulcan, which was designed by noted naval architect Frank Mulder.

In 2014, Vicem delivered its first 97 Motor Yacht, the second largest yacht in the Vicem Vintage line. She is hand-crafted and features a composite finish.

The History of Vicem and Yachting

The Vicem yacht brand began in a small town of the same name located on the banks of the Black Sea. It was here that Turkish businessman Sebahattin Hafizoglu found his passion for the schooners of the Bosporus (also known as the Turkish Gulet). Sebahattin was determined to reinvigorate these traditional vessels for the contemporary world. He wanted to create yachts that offered the classic charm of the traditional Turkish boats, but that offered the luxury, comfort and performance found on modern yachts. Sebahattin also was keen to utilize the cold-molded method and various epoxy techniques in the build process. His creations were highly regarded by locals. Soon resorts and businessmen began purchasing his yachts and so, Vicem Yachts began. Reviewed: Vicem 67 Cruiser

Vicem Yachts , based on the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul, has a big mission statement: “to blend craftsmanship born from 3,000 years of finely honed woodworking skills with the most advanced technology.”

The builder’s 67 Cruiser combines these essential elements and more. With a high, sea-stopping freeboard forward, a broad-shouldered 18-foot-1-inch beam, and liberal use of mahogany wood veneers throughout, the 67 Cruiser indeed looks classic while giving yacht owners some cool modern tech.

I stepped aboard at the aft deck, and the 114,000-pound yacht barely moved. The flybridge overhang extends all the way aft, perfect for weather protection and the installation of an enclosure, if desired. Three wood and glass bulkhead panels separate the aft deck from the salon. Sliding the panels to starboard opens up the space to the salon.

Inside, I ran my fingertips over the joinery, and it felt silky. The seams were barely noticeable unless I was looking for them. From the main deck to the accommodations belowdecks, the 67 has satin-finish mahogany, as well as light leather and fabrics. That level of quality finishing is also in the crew quarters aft, which most guests will never even see.

Vicem calls the 67 a social yacht, with numerous areas to relax and entertain. Guests can sit and chat with plenty of room on the facing port and starboard sofas during cocktails before dinner. With the salon’s 6-foot-7-inch headroom and the triple 32-inch-high windows on each side, the area feels open with real estate to spare. Bookshelves, backlighting and a wooden coffee table with a leather inlay add ambience.

Forward and to port is a six-seat, booth-style dinette. This can be a great spot to work on a laptop, make a call, or play with the tablet during downtime. Vicem built a 110-volt outlet and dual USB charging ports into the bulkhead for these reasons. Similar outlets and ports are found all around the yacht, in close proximity to where guests will congregate. It’s functional and thoughtful design.

The forward dinette bench seat has a backrest that flips, so the seat goes from aft-facing to forward-facing, creating a second seat at the lower helm. That helm is to starboard and equipped for longer passages or overnight watches. Side-deck doors should make line handling easier.

Vicem put the 67′s galley amidships and to starboard, keeping the chef near the guests and well-positioned to serve meals to the aft deck or the dinette. The galley can be closed off during formal affairs. Appliances include a four-burner Miele cooktop, four Sub-Zero fridge and freezer drawers, a GE microwave, and a Bosch dishwasher.

Other social spaces include the aft deck, with transom seating and a wooden dining table for alfresco meals, and the bow, with a forward 5-foot-long bench seat and a sun pad measuring 8 feet wide by 6.5 feet long. For safe transit to and from the foredeck, the covered side decks measure 19 inches wide. Rails are as tall as 38 inches.

To me, the social place to be is up on the flybridge. There is a starboard helm including dual 17-inch Garmin multifunction displays for taking care of business, but the rest of the flybridge is laid out for fun and relaxation. There are great views from the portside double-wide companion seat. A U-shaped settee is to starboard—the cushions are around 5 inches thick—and is perfect for gathering a crowd. A pair of wooden tables makes for easy passage to the seating, and they fold out to become one large dining table. An art-deco bar to port has two mounted barstools and a fridge, sink and electric grill. Aft, owners can select a davit and tender or lounge chairs and tables (or all of the above, when the tender is deployed). At night, backlighting and 22 lights in the hardtop illuminate the area.

Vicem shows its metalwork prowess via elegant backrest stanchions, highly polished handrails contoured to the yacht’s curves, and custom-designed metal-and-glass boarding gates.

The 67 Cruiser’s handling is equally strong. Capt. Larry Czocher deftly maneuvered the yacht out of the marina between several larger yachts, using single-lever controls. He had just inches to spare on each side. The yacht’s close-quarters responsiveness was excellent, and the 67 tracked well down the New River in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Other yachts of similar size had to make several adjustments to get around the bends, but the 67 made it straight through. Czocher attributes this ability in part to the instant response from the electric steering and to the yacht’s 5-foot-9-inch draft.

Powered with twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels, the 67 Cruiser displayed no significant bow rise, keeping visibility unobstructed throughout the engines’ rpm range. Stability is helped in part by the 67′s hard-chine hull, as well as Humphree stabilizer and interceptor systems.

Other notable features on the Vicem 67 Cruiser include a main-deck day-head, 21.5 kW Onan generator, a hydraulic swim platform, bow and stern thrusters, teak decks, and a wine cooler. They are the kinds of features that make a yacht feel thoroughly modern, even if its good looks are as timeless as can be.

Over the past three decades, the Turkey-based builder and yacht designer has forged an impressive reputation for delivering high-end yachts to clients across the globe. The Vicem Yachts brand has become synonymous with premium cold-molded and fiberglass construction in yachts ranging from 30 to over 150 feet in length.

Up Top and On Deck The bridge deck, which features the vessel’s second helm, also offers a U-shape settee and entertaining console, complete with a wine chiller, sink, and a barbecue grill. The upper helm offers views over the foredeck sunpad that can be used underway or at anchor. Additional twin seating is built-in at the bow for owners who want to feel a little bit of wind in their hair. 

Inside: Nothing Compromised Inside the yacht, Vicem continues its history of excellence by combining classic finishes, bookmatchedmahogany veneers, and premium joinery. The layout is designed to take advantage of the boat’s 20’ 4” (6.19 meter) beam to allow for three large staterooms with walk-around queen-size berths in two of them. In the master, the stateroom stretches the entire beam and adds exceptional hanging locker storage, ensuite head and shower, a straight settee with storage to port, and a vanity to starboard.

All staterooms have ensuite heads with showers and plenty of under-berth stowage in addition to hanging lockers. In order to provide the salon with unparalleled views and uncompromised space, the 82 features a down galley and finished withcoriancountertops and premium appliances.

The main salon opens into the aft cockpit on a single level through double sliding doors and offers seating configurations enough for large families or social gatherings. A pair of facing L-settees in the cockpit as well as a large L-shape and straight settee in the salon provide seating for easily twenty people in comfort and style. The primary helm station is also situated in the salon, providing the captain with unobstructed views all around while underway.  

Performance Vicem’s 82 Superyacht is powered by twin 900-hp D13 diesel powerplants by Volvo Penta. Vessel seatrials realized 17.8 knot top speeds, a 15-knot cruising speed, and a projected range* exceeding 1,100 nautical miles at 9 knots. 

As with all Vicem builds, the factory design team dedicates countless hours to achieving a dual-purpose of performance and cruising comfort. The 82 Superyacht is no exception: it offers safety, comfort, and performance in a luxury package that can be cruised by owners or with a full-time crew onboard.

I realize that Moscow is on the Volga River, which connects to the Caspian Sea, but I’m wondering how foreign vessels can reach it? Or do foreign travel companies just buy a yacht that’s already "in the system"?

From the Caspian Sea, Gary, yachts come up the Volga then on to the Oka River and enter a tributary call the Moskva ("Moscow" in Russian) River. Alternate route is Volga to man-made Moscow Canal (which connects Volga to Moskva River). The big superyachts can’t get into the city limits because the river is only 3 inches deep. Just outside of the city, however, the water is 6 meters deep, perfect for large yachts. Yacht passengers easily travel into the city by limousine. (I imagine thoughts of hovercrafts, etc are a consideration for someday…) James Bond, anyone?
