Satellite Yacht Design, founded in 1996 by Kees van de Stadt, is renowned for the high performance sailing yachts. During the foundation, the office is responsible for producing over 150 boats in a range of eight to twenty-five metres that are now sailing on national and international waters.

As an enthusiastic sailor myself, with a background in competitive sailing, I have a strong affinity with my designs. Most of my designs are built in composites and aluminium, but the client always makes the final decision on what is used. Both materials allow for light weight yachts that are also comfortable.

It’s important to have personal contact with each client and for that reason, I made the conscious decision to keep my company small. This way all the detailed requests from clients will be included in the design. In case of bigger projects, I will work together with interior designers and constructors.

I design for private owners and companies in a modern or classical style, but all within the premise of absolute safety, fast speeds and comfort. I design for customers who are sailing around the world and who want a custom-made boat – for example with a retractable keel to get into shallow harbours or sail closer to shore and I design for competitive sailors who want a fast and exciting boat.

All designs are made in the most modern Cad software and I own a paperless office. All the projects worldwide are on the cloud and shared with the clients.

De Voogt Naval Architects

The legendary designer Henri de Voogt set up his own company in 1913, and won races himself in his early – self-built – boats. Once the focus shifted exclusively to naval architecture, De Voogt began cooperating with the De Vries and Van Lent yards.

The partnership flourished after the creation of Feadship, and today this technical office for naval architecture and engineering is the creative center of the organization. As well as designing yachts in the classic Feadship tradition, De Voogt is increasingly asked to develop revolutionary new concepts. Thanks to generations of resourceful interaction between De Voogt and the Feadship yards, the final results are always spectacular.

PROFILE: Werner Yacht Design

As part of an ongoing series of profiles of Dutch yacht designers and naval architects, we talked to Theo Werner of Werner Yacht Design

VOLENDAM – The year 2019 was a busy one. Theo Werner saw several of his designs launched and new ones plop into his lap. All will pad his varied portfolio stretching back 22 years. Ask Werner what he does for a living and he’ll tell you, “I draw honest boats. Not artsy, overly designed ones. But real boats.”

His portfolio contains trawlers, commuters, saloon boats, voyagers, (semi) classics, explorers and speedboats. His office brims with photos and scale models. Of a commuter yacht, for instance. A slim, fast craft that in the 1920s and 1930s ferried New York-area tycoons to and from work.

In July, Altena Yachting launched Sirena, a 15m (52ft), Werner-designed semi-displacement, aluminum motor yacht whose owner aired ambitious demands. He ordered a heavy craft with a 20+ knot top speed, a combination many designers shun.

“We spent a huge effort optimizing the hull design,” Werner remembers. “Perhaps my most complicated design ever! The yacht had to be fast, have 3 cabins, 3 wet cells and central steering. The latter complicated the guest cabins layout down below. Also, ventilation had to be forced into the yacht which required space for air ducts.”

Werner relishes a challenge. A few years back, he heard through the grapevine that an ex-client was looking for a new yacht. Unasked, he drew one based on what he recalled of the former client’s wish-list, way back when.

He made assumptions about weight, resistance, engine power and so on – all dicey factors, but it worked out OK. Werner gave the yacht a plumb bow and sharp, double spray rails and got the nod to complete the work begun. His design was put through a Computational Fluid Dynamics test. Half loaded, the design was no problem but fully loaded, the ship was difficult to push over its own wave.

“We adjusted the prop shafts and trim tabs to generate considerable lift,” he says. “That led to more resistance at low speeds, but generated enough lift at high speed putting the ship, even when fully loaded, flat on the water. Also the resistance dropped and the boat accelerates smoothly to about 20 knots.”

As a youngster, Werner knew he’d be working with boats, spent much time on his parents’ motorboat, opted for technical schooling and devoured yacht and ship building books. An early design of a 40ft sailing yacht gave him a job at Pieter Beeldsnijder whose studio has worked on 2,500 projects. He later moved to André Hoek Design and started his own studio in 1997.

His work includes the conversion of a 180ft sea tug into a yacht, the design of an 88-ft motor yacht in 1960s retro style and a sleek, modern 140ft. explorer. A recent assignment was the Delfino 67 from the De Alm yard. The 20m sea-going trawler is a rare mix of elegance and robustness that, despite its modest length, has a spacious, practical interior.

Werner is now working on the 26m ISA project. Construction of the steel/aluminum shell is being finalized. “Although it is a 26m yacht, its load-line is under 24m keeping it outside international regulations for large sea-going vessels which simplifies the commissioning and ownership of the yacht.

The Very Best of Dutch Yacht Builders

Dutch yacht builders have crafted a reputation as being among the world’s very best, with an extraordinary density of high quality, high value shipyards operating out of the Netherlands.

Part of the reason for the dominance of Dutch yacht builders in the superyacht industry stems from Holland’s prestigious history of boat building, which stretches back centuries and was perfectly poised to make the shift to constructing luxury yachts during the 20th century. The word ‘yacht’ originally comes from the Dutch word ‘jacht’, meaning hunt.

Some of the towering names of the yachting world have emerged from Holland, with the great heritage yards Amels, Hakvoort, Royal Huisman, De Vries and Royal Van Lent more recently joined by other outstanding Dutch yacht builders such as Heesen, Vitters, and Oceanco.

Dutch shipyards are heralded not only for their world-class build quality, high tech yards, and innovation, but are also renowned for reliability in finishing projects on time and on budget. With Dutch shipyards producing many fully-custom ‘one-off’ yachts, many of the yachts launched from Holland’s shipyards are extremely iconic and often win international awards.

Dutch yacht builders have also capitalized on their individual reputations for quality construction by forming strong collaborations including Feadship and HISWA, which serve to market the best of Dutch yachting internationally, thereby growing the influence of the Dutch yacht builders.

Notable Dutch Yacht Builders

This prestige brand is often known as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of yacht builders, constructing fully custom yachts from a ‘blank slate’ beginning. Feadship is actually a partnership between two of the greatest Dutch shipyards: De Vries and Royal Van Lent, with yacht building roots dating back to 1849. The Feadship fleet today is more than 450 strong, and includes some ground-breaking yachts including AQUARIUS and ECTASEA.

Founded in 1918 and boasting the largest and most high-tech shipyard in the Netherlands, Amels turned its hand to superyacht construction in the 1980’s. Amels builds fully custom yachts up to 656’ (200m), as well as their highly sought-after ‘Limited Edition Series’. Known for exceptional build quality and iconic yachts including HERE COMES THE SUN, Amels also builds a popular range of support yachts for superyachts through DAMEN, its parent company.

Royal Huisman

This family-run shipyard was founded in 1884, and has produced some of the finest sailing yachts afloat, with a long line of regatta honors and design awards across its fleet of maxi-yachts and performance cruisers. While its fame is recognized across the world for building sailing yachts such as ATHENA, Royal Huisman also builds motoryachts, including the award winning ARCADIA.

Hakvoort is another illustrious Dutch shipyard which dates back to 1919 and builds sailing and motoryachts up to 215’ (65m). With yachts constructed in steel and aluminum, Hakvoort offers a full-custom service from design to launch, as well as a 180’ (55m) semi-custom series. They have launched many notable, award-winning yachts, from LADY MARINA in 1994 to APOSTROPHE in 2013.

Founded in 1979, Heesen has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the yachting industry, and is now considered one of the most innovative Dutch yacht builders. Initially known as a builder of fast performance yachts, Heesen has expanded its yacht building capacity up to 260’ (80m) and has achieved notoriety for its revolutionary design and engineering, such as the Fast Displacement Hull Form first seen on multi-award-winning GALACTICA STAR.

One of the most respected names in sailing, the Vitters shipyard was founded in 1990 and has gone on to launch luxury sailing yachts known for winning superyacht regattas and international design awards. Constructing yachts over 30m with an uncompromising focus on quality and design, Vitters has received accolades for yachts including SARISSA, GANESHA and AQUIJO. Vitters also owns the Green Marine yard, which is responsible for building the Volvo Ocean Race fleet.

This Dutch yacht builder specializes in the large yacht market, constructing fully custom superyachts over 260’ (80m) in aluminum and steel. Oceanco opened its doors in 1990 and has been responsible for the launch of some of the industry’s most well-known yachts, including ALFA NERO, ANASTASIA and the largest Dutch yacht to be built thus far, the 360’ (110m) JUBILEE.

Located in the medieval Dutch town of Den Bosch, Moonen Shipyards is one of the world’s most well-known motoryacht builders. Having launched their first boat in 1963, Moonen pride themselves in quality and service and offer diverse options in the upper echelons of the yacht industry for fully customized superyachts up to 150’ (45m), custom series displacement yachts, explorer vessels or fast displacement all-aluminum powerboats.

Established as a family-owned shipyard in 1938, Mulder has become a renowned member of the Dutch yacht building family. The yards’ global reputation for quality has been built upon three main pillars: the classic Super Favorite Cruisers, the later Favorite Superior and a range of Mulder custom-built motor yachts from 42’ to 147’ (13m to 45m).

Van der Valk

A passionate yacht enthousiast, Wim van der Valk started the company that bears his name in 1967, and is still driving force behind it today. In applying the most advanced solutions, systems and materials possible, this pedigreed Dutch yacht builder believes in creating yachts that will stand the test of time. In the late 1990s, they introduced their signature product – the Continental I series. Today, to ensure unrivaled quality and exclusivity, Van Der Valk produces a select, limited number of Continental yachts each year.

The lay-out

In addition to her robust exterior, Beyond also features a wide arrangement for tenders and storage space, which can be easily transformed to suit the needs of the voyage, highlighting the flexibility of her design. The low bulwarks, open decks and glass railing let guests relish the wide views, while the dedicated observatory, located on the sundeck, features a unique gyro-stabilised telescope.  “The ability to adapt to and to get the most out of every exploring trip makes Beyond unique,”  he explains. The first explorer yacht design to include a private observatory, the Dutch design firm aims to offer clients the chance go further than what is on the surface of the ocean by discovering the mysteries of the skies at night.

Next to the observatory, the explorer design also includes a certified helideck on the bridge deck aft and space for a submersible and toys.  “The multi-purpose tender garage on the main deck, which can be configured to the needs of the exploration to let you store snowmobiles, extra dinghies and skies all in a closed space ensure her owner is able to discover more than just the obvious,”  adds Marelis. The tender garage can also be opened up and increase the outside deck, offering guests more space for an outside lounge for example. The sliding doors and four overhead cranes can be used to move the extra vessels or vehicles and are not in the way of the aft main deck for easy access to the swim platform.

The interior layout of Beyond also supports the philosophy of extended living on board, which is why it includes a cinema on the cabin deck, a fully equipped dive store, an internal boarding room, gym and wellness centre as well as the observatory, with a direct connection to the owner’s lounge, with a private seating area, making it ideal for extended voyages at sea. The owner’s lounge has a complete glass aft all, which offers an uninterrupted view of their surroundings, while the owner’s suite features 180 degrees views and a private jacuzzi.

Ultimate explorer

Offering plenty of room for all, Beyond is able to accommodate up to 14 guests in seven staterooms, including four doubles and two twins cabins and the owner’s cabin. The crew quarters are spacious and can accommodate up to 17 crew members including the captain, who has a private cabin by the wheelhouse. The tank deck includes a dedicated laundry area and plenty of refrigeration facilities, with all decks being connected by a dumbwaiter.  “One of the biggest challenges when designing Beyond was the proportioning of living spaces in combination with the big tender and equipment storage area,”  notes Marelis.

“The living spaces are positioned quite far forward, while the lower deck should still be accessible via the central elevator/staircase.”  The addition of the observatory with the telescope, incorporated so owners can make full use of the zero to no light pollution zones the explorer yacht can travel to, has been position in a unique way to make sure it did not compromise the overall design and remained clear of the Bimini on the sundeck.

Created for clients with a keen sense of adventure and an eagerness to explore the Beyond, this explorer yacht is sure to turn heads.  “Beyond was created for a visionary owner, a self-made entrepreneur who made his dreams into a living. His dream is to see the world and beyond and get the most out of every exploration.”
