Catamaran Brewing Company

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

When we decided to just drive to pondicherry one sunday morning, without any planning, we knew we wanted to stop by the first ever brewery in pondicherry. Arun who handles the show there is a known face in that space and how could we miss... this one. The place is made tastefully, the service is excellent and choices of beer is something I really loved. Arun explained the whole process of brewing with so much love and passion that we were awestruck and there was a lot of learning that we did that day. The food is quite decent and the choice of music that was playing that day was totally foot tapping! Definitely going again to spend more time and taste more choices of beer. If you are in pondicherry a must to visit! More

We really felt like sitting in a western bar and drinking cold beer after a few days in TN. This place totally delivered. The sample of locally brewed beers was interesting but we found the one really deserving a full 500ml glass was the IPA,... which was very good. The choice of food both veg and non veg, is huge and every dish we tried was excellent. The prices are high if you compare to local restaurants and street food, but when you convert to your home currency, it’s very reasonable. More

We visited the Catamaran Brewing Company during our visit to Puducherry. They serve around six of their Craft Beers ranging from pale ale to bitter. We tried three of them and found them awesome. We also ordered their Dumplings and Grilled Chicken which were delicious... and fresh. We thoroughly enjoyed the ambience, décor and environment. The staff are courteous, helpful and great. A must place for a visitor to the City. More

Got totally treated disrespectfully on rooftop yesterday! When I arrived there was very little clientele. I took an empty table in the smoking area and ordered a snack and a drink. They came and ask me to move. There was no 'reserved' on the table... and there were many empty tables, so I said no. They started harassing and bullying me. I got angry and instead of sending someone to the hospital I just kicked drink and snack of the table. Paid the damage and left. Last time I gave 800 rupee tip on a 1200 bill, this time there was no tip of course. I will have lunch on 3rd floor today and have them write a complaint to owners and top management. More

We visit twice, first time to the indoor bar and restaurant. Second time we visited the outdoor roof top bar and eating area, what a fantastic place to visit and it wouldn't look out of place in any European city. The place has a cool... calm vibe and because it brews its own beers on the premises the beer is spot on. I enjoyed the IPA and also the six glass tasting flight. We also had food from the grill, lovely chicken wings, chicken breast, piri spirits potato wedges and Greek salad. Everything was perfect. At weekends they have live music and a DJ on Saturday's, it's well worth visiting and different to anywhere else we visited in Pondy. The staff are also very good. Credit to the owner and manager for creating such a fantastic place. More

We stopped here for lunch and were impressed by the craft beers. We had the Indian summer (both versions) and found both to be quite nice. The ambience was nice, service could be quicker. The food was only average. We had dragon paneer, chicken jerk... burger and wok tossed pak choy etc. The dragon paneer was good, the other two just ok. More

We decided to check out this brewery bar after reading the reviews and we were not disappointed. We ordered a flight of beers to give us an idea of the beers available. A good selection and after sampling, we went with the IPA. Good choice... of foods to accompany the beers, either snacks/starters or main meals. Several individual booth’s to enhance your privacy regardless of group size. Staff were excellent, friendly and informative about their beers. More

We were here for our friend's bachelorette and Catamaran Brewing Co. did a really great job by helping us with our last minute requests. Specially would like to mention Ms. Priya who took her time to make sure our needs were met. Food here was... unique and excellent. Would highly recommend this place! More

I visited Catamaran with family and was pleasantly surprised to note the new in house DJ Rishi was awesome. He had the crowd tapping with his music. Thank you Catamaran for taking your patrons suggestions into consideration. Did was great and the atmosphere was electric.

Lousy service.Attitude of staff not acceptable.Just hype ,Pricing is also a LOOT. Wouldn't ever visit again nor recommend.

It was better to be in this evening at catamaran brewing co , food was too good as well as the hospitality, thanks Mr black beard.

1. Food is exceptionally good. Menu had dishes from a variety of cuisines. 2. Customer Service is average. 3. Ambience is sort of okayish.

Found this place, the day we were leaving Pondi. Loved every aspect of it - from valet parking to a very comfortable setting, the music played was apt for our times, the staff was attentive and service was to the point. The fusion and quality... of the food were unparalleled. A definite stop for groups and families. Keep it up and stay Unique! More

The ambience is great, food is great, waiters are too good boy the Dj is totally destructive for this place. He's playing music in his head and without sync to the crowd. He's killing the vibe of Catamarans atmosphere. I've sat the entire evening watching... his debacle playing music that suits him. Please remember with all hospitality businesses cater to your crowd not some imbecile behind the DJ stand. I've watched this DJ from 9pm till 23:26 More

Was very excited about visiting this place. Great ambience. Great selection of beer and food. Friendly service. Have valet service as well.

First Ever Craft Brewery In Pondicherry

the catamaran pondicherry

Traditionally, Pondicherry has been a sunny, sandy place with a laid back culture that suits its fun-loving spirit of beer. In addition to fine breads, cheeses, and chocolate, European influence added another level of flavour. In addition, the new Catamaran Brewing Company , which was unveiled on Saturday, 25th September ’21, is a welcome addition to Pondicherry’s beer scene. First Craft Brewery In Pondicherry. It is now possible to enjoy a wide selection of unique craft beers in the eclectic city’s chill space.

“Vanakkam Pondy” reads the introductory flyer. This reflects the founders’ dream to open a craft brewery in a Tamil-speaking state. The Catamaran Brewing Company, the first Brewery In Pondicherry was launched to present locals and tourists with the taste of locally crafted international beers… Beers that stand out in flavour from mass-produced ones and are paired with the finest gourmet foods!

The story behind

First Brewery In Pondicherry, the Catamaran Brewing Company, was launched 25th September, 21. Its founding fathers, Ranga (Rangaraju) and Prasad (Durga Prasad), made the decision to begin from this point after a long and determined journey. Prasad was working for a Fortune 100 tech company when he decided to take up home-brewing as an interest. As a result of his experience at Blackstar Brewing in Austin in 2016, he was immediately hooked. Prasad decided to quit his job, return to India, and become a brewer. “Due to its proximity to Chennai, I immediately thought of Pondicherry as the perfect beach destination,” he says.

Meanwhile, Ranga built on his passion for food by opening a restaurant called Sicilys at the Beach Promenade in his hometown of Pondicherry.

Prasad and Ranga reconnected in 2016 and the Catamaran Brewing Company was born as a result. However, the journey was not easy. Prasad returned to Chennai from the U.S. in 2017 and started knocking on government doors asking for a license to start a craft brewery. Pondicherry finally had its maiden microbrewery policy after several years, then came the designing, sourcing, and the actual establishing of the microbrewery, which were also hampered by the pandemic.

Beer and Food

the catamaran pondicherry

Catamaran’s Head Brewer, Suryakant Singh, adheres steadfastly to CBC’s ‘craft with commitment’ credo to provide guests with the best craft beer experience possible. CBC uses imported malt and hops to give the ales their structure, while using fresh ingredients from the local market, such as oranges and coriander, to create a truly local taste.

Shatbhi Basu, who runs STIR: Academy of Bartending, guides CBC with a range of mocktails, smoothies, and pouring liquors that will be available.

Some of the Beers on tap are:

Indian Summer (Belgian Witbier)

The perfect summer beer with its large collar of white foam, CBC’s Indian Summer is a refreshing citrus flavoured clean beer with hints of coriander and chamomile.

Pondy Pils (Helles Lager)

Helles is a beer for beer lovers. Great for a stuffy day, CBC’s Pondy Pils is an earthy, balanced, light-bodied, subtly sweet pilsner.

Yuri G’s Drink (Porter)

CBC’s Yuri G pays tribute to a London brewer, who created a fresh brewed ale that quickly became known as the ‘Working man’s pint of choice’ in 1722. Wood smoked malt adds the smoky depth to this dark beer that echoes the original flavours of caramel, molasses and coffee.

Chingari Cider (Dry Apple Cider)

A true cider, CBC’s Chingari Cider is made with apple juice and is gluten free. Surprisingly heady for a cider (ABV 4.5), this drink comes with a sweet and tart flavour akin to a bite into an apple.

A dark lager that’s a Rauch and Brown Ale hybrid.

An Indian pale ale.

Chef Koushik Shankar, better known in his TV Food Judge avatar as the ‘Mad chef’, is behind the finger licking culinary dishes that provide a fitting accompaniment to CBC’s craft beers. The modern South Indian, Pan-Asian and Continental cuisine at CBC is a fusion fare created by the ‘mad chef’ in his own special style. Fare includes Vazhakai Nachos with Mango Salsa, Beer Rasam Panipuri, Podi Fried Idli 2.0, Masala Ratatouille Onigiri, Theepori Wings, Kallumari, Kadugu Eraa, Dimsums, Baos, Spinach Lasagne, Burgers, and Michelin Star Dessert Concepts.

the catamaran pondicherry

Is Puducherry about to witness a craft beer revolution thanks to Catamaran Brewing Company? Possibly. For now, though, it is the only place where all ages can enjoy a meal while those above the legal drinking age can enjoy craft beer from a range of local breweries .

We wish all well to the Catamaran Brewing Company, the First Brewery In Pondicherry

Puducherry's Catamaran Brewing Company is all about beers, ales and new beginnings

People flock to the old French town of Puducherry, attracted and intrigued by its unique ambience and character. Now, the union territory's first microbrewery, Catamaran Brewing Company, is adding to the charm, providing visitors another stop for their weekend trip.

Initially, it was largely the youth who visited the microbrewery inaugurated on September 25, 2021. But now, with awareness of crafts beer, the clients have taken a liking and the footfall has gone up. "After nine months of roller coaster rides, we are seeing different age groups enjoying the place. This is because we have something for every age group," informs Rangaraju Narayanasamy, director of the company, with business partner Durgaprasad Radhakrishnan.

Catamaran started by serving four different varieties of beer - Indian summer, a Belgian-style wheat beer, Chingari cider, an apple cider, Vox Populi, a dark lager, and Pondypils, a pilsner. After the overwhelming response, two new styles - Hopsunami, an Indian pale ale and Heyhefe, a hefeweizen - are also available on tap.

Two varieties with seasonal fruit flavours are added every week. The most popular choice is India Summer, with its pleasant sweetness and zesty, citrus flavours, medium-light body, smooth and creamy (it finishes up dry).

The Chingari Cider, which is a low body, refreshing and bubbling with an apple aroma, balanced together with a sweet and tart flavour to mask the warmth of alcohol. It is particularly popular with women.

The light-bodied Pondi Pilsner has a sweet and malty character with a little hop of flavour at the end, while the Vox populi is moderately crisp with low to moderate levels of sweetness with caramel, toffee and smokiness from roasted malt flavours.

Those who prefer something strong can try the Hopsunami and Heyhefe. Hopsunami's earthy and grassy notes hit first with a malty sweetness rounding up with intense hop characters of citrus fruit with esters produced by yeast.

Bitterness lingers on palate, making it dry, but toffee and caramel malt characters wind up the back of the palate, making it sessionable. The Heyhefe is medium-bodied with bready-grainy, sweet character from the wheat and clove and banana-like characters with a hint of bubble gum at the end.

Their craft beer selection uses exotic flavours of local fruits, wheat, spices, edible flowers and roots and are unique and refreshing. For those new to crafts beer, there is a taster tray to try the different varieties.

"As the summer is a ripening season for fruits, we have been able to source fresh fruits directly from farmers and thus, we were able to make Mango Cider (made from Alphonso mangoes from Krishnagiri farms), Mango Gose, Pomelo Seltzer (made from locally grown pomelo fruits), Siragasamba Rice Lager (using traditional rice)," explains Rangaraju.

Several other flavours will soon be on tap, including Guava Cider, Hibiscus Sour Ale, Jamun Pale Ale, and even a JJ Pale Ale, among others, "We want to pay homage to beloved John John Eapen, who educated the people and bought them closer to craft beer," says Rangaraju.

Along with the beer menu, the food has also undergone transformation over the months. Modern South Indian, Pan Asian, French and continental cuisines are available - vazhakai nachos, podi fried idli, spinach walnut phyllo cups, beer batter onion rings, karuvepillai milagu kozhi, Thai chicken satay with peanut butter sauce, curd rice 2.0 and much more.

These are served with exotic mocktails and tiki cocktails created by Shatbhi Basu, the first bartender in India. "We are planning to launch Pondicherry creole food festival and are gearing up for the beer festival in September," says Rangaraju. The boat-shaped construction (with recycled wood) also provides a stage for artistes and upcoming talents.

As a part of the new thriving industry, the microbrewery also expects support from government to scale production. "We pay the excise duties for the installed capacity, but we are producing only around 3500 litres , as we are not permitted to sell in growler. We want the government to permit craft beers in growler takeaway and beach shack tap rooms,"shares Rangaraju.

Here's hoping.

Catamaran Brewing Company, Pondicherry

the catamaran pondicherry

Catamaran Brewing Company recently opened in Pondicherry and has been generating a lot of interest in various food groups on social media.  I was quite excited about a new microbrewery, now even closer to Chennai compared to  Bengaluru.  I couldn’t wait to try!

Have always been a big fan of microbreweries!  The love for freshly crafted beer dates back to 2003-2004, where I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Kronenhof Brauhus in Bad Homburg, Germany umpteen times.  Till date that is one of the fondest memories I have, of sipping on freshly crafted beer in a 1L mug with pommes frites to nibble, on the side!   My trips to Bengaluru is never complete without a customary visit to at least one of the microbreweries!  Over the years, I have visited quite a few –  Arbor Brewing Company , The Biere Club , Toit Brewpub , Communiti , Vapor Pub & Brewery , Bangalore Brew Works, and more!  The list just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Made up a weekend plan to Pondicherry with close buddies, and needless to say, Catamaran was right on the top of the to-do list.  We reached Pondicherry around 10:30AM and noticed that the place opened only at 11AM.  We decided to relax for sometime at Le Cafe, and then head to Catamaran. It was not difficult to locate the place, it was on quite a busy road right above Westside.  That said, parking was a nightmare!  It took my friend twenty minutes to find a parking place quite far away from there, and come back in an auto.  I was told they have a valet, but since it was a very long Friday night, they would be available slightly late on Saturday.

the catamaran pondicherry

Meanwhile clicked some pictures of the place, the counter, the taps and so on.  The seating arrangement was quite comfy with circular sofas.  This definitely gave more privacy to guests and it was easy to catch a conversation.

the catamaran pondicherry

We ordered a Beer Taster Tray to see what the choices were!  We were told one of the 5 beers – Pondy Pils , a pilsner wasn’t available.  We noticed a Belgian Witbier on the menu – Indian Summer .  Sadly, that wasn’t available too. Hopsunami – an Indian Pale Ale, Vox Populi – a dark lager, Yuri G’s drink – an oatmeal stout, and Chingari Cider – an apple cider were the available ones. The first pic doesn’t have the samplers placed in the right placeholders.  The second pic is correct.

the catamaran pondicherry

We ordered quite a few of these, and I was repeating the IPA and the dark lager.

the catamaran pondicherry

We entered the place around 11:30 AM and we were told the starters could be ordered only by 12:45PM.  We managed with rice crisps until their kitchen dished out starters.  The 5 dips were good.  I personally liked the one which was like a mayo with a lemon pickle flavor.

the catamaran pondicherry

Vaazhakkaai Nachos with Mango Salsa was one of the first dishes they managed to get ready.   It was wonderful.  Crispy and tasty!

the catamaran pondicherry

Roasted Chilli Beef came next, and friends liked it.  The portion size seemed minuscule.  It tasted good and friends were happy.

the catamaran pondicherry

Kozhi Polichathu was decent, but there was something lacking, probably salt and a little more masala.  It didn’t quite make an impression on the palate that would make me order it again.

the catamaran pondicherry

Prawn Podi – 65 and Kozi Podi – 65 were the dishes we ordered next.  We knew it was going to be almost same with just different meat.  We did so because of my restriction to eating seafood.  The portion sizes was good.  Tasted good, though the chicken wasn’t as soft as I’d expected it to be.  The podi needed more punch.

the catamaran pondicherry

Muttai Tempura Bonda was a clear winner!  Awesome!  This, I would order again without a second thought.  None of the dishes so far made a strong impression like this, except Vaazhakkaai Nachos.

the catamaran pondicherry

Friends ordered Beef Bolognaise Lasagna , they loved it.  Noone had any complaints with this dish.  In fact, one of them specifically mentioned it was very tasty.

the catamaran pondicherry

Meanwhile we got a complimentary shot each, of another beer which was called ‘ Smoky Santa ‘.  We were told it would have an aroma of bacon.  It was good, though I couldn’t quite clearly catch the aroma after downing a few glasses. 🙂  we continued with IPA.

the catamaran pondicherry

Malli Kozhi was the next dish.  Again, a mediocre Chicken starter.  It was quite underwhelming actually.  The taste didn’t quite make an impression.

the catamaran pondicherry

Loaded Beef Fries was good, friends said!  I ate just a very few fries untouched by cheese and beef.

the catamaran pondicherry

Not a complaint, but another place that has only the special water – Blue Pine ! Not sure why the regular bottled water isn’t available.

the catamaran pondicherry

Overall, food was a mixed bag.  Only a few dishes were ‘wow’!  Rest of them ‘Okayish’.  It wasn’t necessarily something that you would complain about, but it just failed to tickle your taste buds.  Also it would have been great if Indian Summer and Pondy Pils were available, sadly we had to stick to the 4 variants only.  Mr. Ayyappan waited on our table.  Service was courteous, no complaints there!

We were there for a good four hours and had a nice time with close buddies.  Overall it was quite an elaborate outing with beer and food and we paid a little less than 9K in all.   I would certainly come back to try newer varieties of beer and to see their starters go from ‘Okay’ to ‘Lipsmacking’!

Indulge 14th anniversary special: Pondy’s first microbrewery, Catamaran Brewing Company impresses with its crafted ales

Interiors at the Catamaran Brewing Company

Pondy’s first microbrewery is a pitcher of wow from the get-go. Three years in the making (since the license was applied for) by partners Rangaraju Narayanaswamy and Durga Prasad Radhakrishnan — the Catamaran Brewing Company features five beers on tap on any given day. Their most recent addition — was the Oktoberfest-inspired Marzen (with malty notes), and we’re told there’s already a Hot Mulled Cider lined up for Christmas! As for the dining experience, the spacious 6,500 sq ft is designed to give you ‘cruise vibes’ with portholes for windows, a staircase to take you ‘upper deck’ and waiters wearing name tags like Jack Sparrow and Captain Red Beard.

the catamaran pondicherry

Beer rasam We settle in at a table just beneath what appears to be a ‘centre piece’  attraction —  a 25-foot surfboard suspended from the ceiling, just as chef Koushik S aka the ‘mad chef’ rolls out his first appetiser. As we quickly discover, beer has been creatively woven through the food as well. We sample crisp pani puris filled with tangy rasam laced with apple cider and crunchy vadams with a beer cheese dip. “Each beer takes about eight hours to brew,” Rangaraju informs us, as we take a quick break from tasting for a quick look-see of the brewing unit. “Last night, we started at 10 pm and ended at about 6 am,” he shares, while head brewer Suryakanth walks us through the prepping steps (milling, filtration, boiling). All of this, is of course, not including the 13 to 17-day fermentation cycle.

<em>Masala ratatouille onigiri</em>

Think local  German brewmaster Oliver Schauf who incidentally worked on India’s first microbrewery (Doolally) in Pune over a decade ago, was roped in for the setup, which includes equipment from Italy and China weighing close to 13 tonnes and malt grain imported from Belgium. With a capacity of 500 litres, trials for new flavours are usually done with about 15  litres. And Rangaraju tells us, “We’re planning to use a lot of local ingredients.” Expect fruity flavours with jackfruit, coconut and mango as well as brewed pitchers of millets, coriander and vetiver.

<em>Pulled pork on pita</em>

In-cider information We sip on the Chingari Cider (light and sweet) and graduate to the Vox Populi (dark lager with caramel notes) as we continue with the rest of our meal which is a spread of Modern South Indian, Pan Asian and Continental. The Homemade Fries loaded with beef bolognese and melted cheese and the innovative Masala Ratatouille Onigiri (sushi-meets-ratatouille) are flavour experiments we’ll be raving about for a while. INR 1,800 for a meal for two, including beverages.

CATAMARAN BREWING COMPANY, Pondicherry - Restaurant Reviews, Phone Number & Photos

Pondicherry Food Trail: Exploring French, Tamil, and the In-Between Flavours

If there are a few things that Pondicherry is renowned for, it’s its charming French Colony, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, the cheap-ish alcohol, and the food. As the title clearly lays down the scope, I’m steering clear of the first two. There’s much to be said just about the food and drink; Pondicherry has a mélange of culinary experiences that it doles out to those who visit its sea-facing facade. And I intend to do the land justice.

the catamaran pondicherry

Although the colonial-era French are long gone, they’ve left behind their legacy in shapes and forms beyond neatly paved rues , heritage mansions and chic boutiques. I’m talking edibles, and not the banned kind, although some border on the sinful. Baguettes with glossy jam, flaky croissants with soft, yellow butter, warm Croque Monsieur with cheese oozing from its edges, lightly-browned crêpes, and savoury galettes make their way to your breakfast plate, while lunch and dinner shine the spotlight on ratatouille, quiche, bouillabaisse, and Coq au Vin, with a glass of wine to wash it all down.

Of course, the indigenous Tamil population doesn’t shy away from reminding travellers that Pondicherry was, is and always will be their home first, and food that’s rooted in ingredients and concoctions of the homeland is what leaves us begging for seconds. Typical south Indian breakfast foods of steaming idli-vada and sambhar , crispy dosai with chutney, and frothy filter coffee are churned out each morning from every other eatery in this neck of the woods. For lunch or dinner, Malabar biryani , rice and meen (fish) curry or the simplistic rasam , vegetable poriyal (sautéed dish) and the decadent payasam are up for grabs.

the catamaran pondicherry

There’s also the inevitable outcome of adding the desi and videsi into one pot. Over several years, French and Tamil flavours have blended rather harmoniously – unlike the architecture, where east and west have their distinct quarters – into an inviting local cuisine that’s at the heart of the Pondicherry food experience. This Tamil-Franco fare, better known as Creole cuisine, has restaurants and homes alike swapping traditional Indian spices for quintessential French ingredients and vice versa, so much so that the French Bouillabaise has taken on a new avatar as Puyabaise ! Creole cuisine doesn’t care for limits. Much like the ever-expanding universe, more nuances are added to the Creole flavour profile (which is, for the most part, Indian) as more cultures join a typical Pondicherian family – Dutch, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Anglo-India, Oriya and Bengali.

Goubert Market - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

My four days in Pondicherry – and my third visit – had me indulging in French, Tamil and Creole foods in as many restaurants and eateries as possible, partly because of my FOMO and partly because travelling in peak summer months demands one seek shelter in an air-conditioned establishment for as long as possible. While this isn’t a list of must-try restaurants or a post about the best places to eat, I’ve penned – as a solo traveller who isn’t picky about what she eats as long as it leaves her feeling uncomfortably full – my honest opinions on the flavours of Pondicherry.

Also read: Postcards from Pondicherry

Note: My spice tolerance is quite low. Most French restaurants don’t exactly throw heaps of chilli powder in their dishes.

Baker Street

I got acquainted with Baker Street during my second visit to Pondicherry when I came to get my freediving certification. I didn’t clear the certification – a story for another time – but I did end up finding what would become one of my go-to eateries for French-influenced breakfast in Pondicherry.

the catamaran pondicherry

A compact version of Candies in Bombay’s Bandra, this casual bakery-style space serves some delectable savoury dishes and desserts that work well for any meal of the day and is sort of pocket-friendly. A staff of sweetly smiling, saree-clad ladies await to serve in-house bread, meaty sandwiches and burgers, vegetarian and non-vegetarian quiche, pasta and lasagne, and a whole array of cakes, mousses and éclair.

At 7.30 AM, I was one of the first customers and ordered a chicken & olive sandwich, which didn’t exactly blow my mind or my palate. The bread was cold and hard, although the filling was the right amount of flavourful. That said, I gave Baker Street a second chance to redeem itself during my 2023 visit, and this time, it kicked the ball out of the park with every order!

Tip: Get there early (7.30 AM) or after breakfast hours (post 10.30 AM) to avoid the mad morning rush.

The Botanist Lounge

While on the hunt for La Maison Rose – a classic French mansion dressed in pastel pink and soft green that’s dutifully preserved by Vieilles Maisons Francaises  (VMF), a French organization that works to restore French heritage mansions across the globe – I realized that I had been to the building before. Coromandel Café has the privilege of calling La Maison Rose its home and turns out, so does The Botanist Lounge.

the catamaran pondicherry

The interiors are the hero; colonial-chic, if that makes sense. A soothing colour palette welcomes eyes that desperately seek coolness after bearing the brunt of Pondicherry’s ruthless summer and godawful humidity. Deep greens of the potted plants and muted greys of the wall art and cupboards are offset by dull gold and aged browns of the furniture, which are topped either by berry-red or sky-grey upholstery. It’s a statement, telling you that you are, indeed, in a mansion that derives its heritage from the yesteryears of French occupation.

the catamaran pondicherry

Tip : Find yourself a cosy corner at the low-key Botanist Lounge while you wait for a table at the popular Coromandel Cafe.

My order at The Botanist Lounge was a simple yet surprisingly delicious vegan mango ice cream topped with chia, flax and sunflower seeds – a little dose of health to help me tide the constant indulging that I would partake in for the entire duration of my travels here. My advice – drop by for the ambience, if nothing else.

Catamaran Brewing Co - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

When a lady residing in the pub capital of India comes across Pondicherry’s first and only (for now) craft brewery, she has to check it out, especially when it comes recommended by friends from said pub capital.

A visit during the daylight hours of a weekday isn’t recommended if you’re looking to sink into the typical revelry that only a packed brewery on weekend evenings can provide. But if you, like me, will do whatever it takes to avoid a crowd, you will travel to Pondicherry in the blistering heat of June, and you will visit Catamaran on a weekday afternoon.

Ignoring the plush velvet seating of the booths, I chose the bar and placed my go-to order at breweries that I’m visiting for the first time – their beer sampler.

Catamaran Brewing Co - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

While not a beer fan (no, really. I see no point in drinking anything that’s as bitter and gassy as beer; I’d rather enjoy a delicious cocktail, or even a mocktail), I’m always up for a refreshing apple cider, which the Catamaran Brewing Company blows out of the water. I also enjoyed what seems to be a crowd favourite lately – their mango cider. Named Slingshot , it is summer apropos with a light body, a refreshing aroma of mango, and a flavour profile that oscillates playfully between sweet and tart. I’m partial to the sweeter apple cider that they’ve named Chingari Cider , although IRL, the king of fruits occupies my heart.

Catamaran Brewing Co - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

I didn’t order any food, although their menu seems to cover standard brewery fare, south Indian, pan-Asian and continental dishes, while also throwing some interesting fusion recipes into the mix, like vazhakkai (plantain) nachos with mangai (raw mango) salsa. Maybe next time.

Chez Pushpa

Authentic home-style Creole cuisine seems to be a lost culinary art in the place of its conception, but the painstaking efforts and epicurean genius of Mamie (grandmother) Pushpa, through her ‘ la table d’hôte ‘ venture aptly titled Chez Pushpa, are keeping traditions alive.

A familial ambience awaits those who manage to get a reservation at this sought-after dining experience, where you enjoy a Creole meal with Mamie Pushpa and her family in their home. It’s a refreshing affair, especially since most travel dining takes place in the almost-impersonal settings of restaurants, cafés, kiosks and carts.

Chez Pushpa - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

The flavour-rich menu for my lunch included nannari (Indian sarsaparilla) juice, duck vadavoum (a French take on the traditional south Indian spice blend vadakam ) sauce, ridge gourd with prawns poriyal , chả giò (Vietnamese spring rolls), banana flower poriyal , white rice and rasam , and kesari for dessert. I regretted filling up on the Baker Street breakfast and The Botanist Lounge ice cream, which made it impossible to dive in for seconds here.

Chez Pushpa - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

I have so much to say about Chez Pushpa that it warrants a separate post. Still, I’ll leave you with a few things. Come for the Creole food, stay for said Creole food and engaging mealtime conversations, and leave with memories of a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Chez Pushpa - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

If there’s one item in this entire list that I can bestow the hefty title of ‘must-do when in Pondicherry’ to, it’s dining at Chez Pushpa.

Coromandel Café

It’s so strange that I’ve dined at Coromandel Café four times so far, and only recently found out that it commands accolades such as being the 5th best New Restaurant in the World by Conde Nast Traveller. To me, it was a cutesy restaurant in La Maison Rose’s pretty salmon-pink building and palm-fronded courtyard, serving up quite an eclectic spread of food and drink.

the catamaran pondicherry

Head inside for the best experience, where you are greeted by subdued colours. The whites and greys of the walls overlayed with dull moss-green depictions of flora complemented by warm golden lighting make for an inviting sight, while colonial-style furniture leaves you feeling all fancy and proper. And the air conditioning; good lord, the air conditioning!

Coromandel Café’s Hot Pink Eggs Benedict and Banana Bread French Toast make for the most mouth-watering breakfast, while their Mango Pad Thai Salad , Halloumi & Orange Salad , and Posh N’ Pink Tagliatelle are must-haves for lunch or dinner. All their fare is made with local produce – think cheeses from Auroville, chocolate from Mason & Co. (also in Auroville), veggies from Goubert Market, fresh catch-of-the-day from the Bay of Bengal – quite similar to La Villa.

Coromandel Cafe - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

I also like their simple yet uber-delicious grilled fish – garlic-butter-grilled fillet with mashed potatoes and grilled carrot in smokey paprika prawn bisque sauce – satisfying yet light enough to have dessert after, while their signature cocktails make for good meal accompaniments. I’m a sucker for The Street Herbologist , Elderflower & Cucumber Martini , and their in-house orange-infused vodka that the mixologist was kind enough to give me a shot glass full of. It was over glasses of these beverages that we figured out we were from the same town!

Gelataria Montecatini Terme

the catamaran pondicherry

Don’t expect much from the Gelataria Montecatini Terme (GMT), except some damn-good gelato to be had by the Rock Beach.

Honestly, it becomes a necessity to grab a gelato from GMT, since walking along the beach can take its toll. Their signature Buongiorno, Stracciatella, Amaretto, Raffaello and Venezia flavours are quite popular, as are their experimental sugarcane, watermelon, chilli chocolate, and white chocolate variants.

A friend dragged me to Hot Breads for a snack although I was intent on checking out Bread & Chocolate. I don’t regret it, mostly because I haven’t eaten at the latter’s Pondicherry outlet yet.

Hot Breads - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

This bakery has a 30-year-old legacy of churning out fresh artisanal breads that locals tend to stock up on, while the attached café has simple yet filling options to choose from, perfect for breakfast or an evening snack. You can’t go wrong with their hot chocolate and sausage roll.

the catamaran pondicherry

I like that La Villa is set in a 19th-century French mansion that has a worn-out, lived-in facade as compared to the other fine dining establishments. A wave of peace and tranquillity you didn’t know you needed washes over you as you exit the tourist-packed Promenade and streets of White Town and step into the restaurant’s hidden, bougainvillaea-shaded courtyard, where you will be dining al fresco.

the catamaran pondicherry

A promise of a short but flavourful menu that’s light on the tummy was enough to make my decision-paralysis flee. I opted for the prawns and smoked fish fusilli – cold-smoked fish and saucy shrimp on a bed of fusilli cooked al dente in a creamy bisque sauce, garnished with spinach and grilled pumpkin seeds – which tastes as dreamy as it sounds. Previously I’ve had their prawns coconut curry that packs creamy, coastal flavours which hit home in every spoonful, and comes in an actual tender coconut!

La Villa - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

On my wishlist is Chef Michel Christmann’s 7-course tasting menu, and from their main menu, I’m eyeing the Pondicherry Crab Soup, Ricotta, Apricot and Walnut Salad, Sand Lobster and Seafood Parmentier Cream, and Lemon Tart.

La Villa - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

In the absence of the showy and the pandering, La Villa wows with some unique flavours made with seasonal local produce, and, with its limited seating, there is a decidedly exclusive feeling that I’m a sucker for, even though you will often find me devouring pakodas-and-chai from little tea stalls by the streets.

Palais de Mahe - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

Housed in the quintessential French Colony colours of mustard yellow and white are the luxurious Palais de Mahe’s Earth Café, the rooftop restaurant Le Alizes and their cocktail bar lounge Mahe Bar. The latter whips up some *chef’s kiss* cocktails that, truth be told, will have you walking around Pondicherry’s streets at night thinking you can excel at low-light photography, only to realize the next morning that drunken confidence will eventually be the death of you.

Palais de Mahe - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

A weekday evening in June saw the bar empty; ideal for me since I love chatting with the staff behind the counter – they’re the ones who hold the true secrets to any place close to their chests. Over glasses of 12 Mile Limit – a heady concoction of white rum, brandy, whisky, grenadine syrup and lemon juice – and Connection – a simple yet delectable combination of Bailey’s Irish Cream and a generous amount of vodka – had me sharing bits and pieces of my life in exchange for insights into the bartenders’.

the catamaran pondicherry

Maison Perumal

This one has my heart! If you’re tired of staring at French mansions all day long, head to the Tamil quarters, where, in a nondescript street, you will find this gem of a hotel & restaurant in a 130-year-old Chettiar mansion, also a part of CGH Earth.

the catamaran pondicherry

Maison Perumal is where you should go to sink your teeth into generous portions of authentic Tamil flavours. Opt for the courtyard seating, where the staff, dressed in Tamil-style lungis serve you items from their appetizing menu. Try their Vazhapoo Vadai – banana flower patties – and Karivepillai Varutha Meen or Era – fish or prawn wrapped with curry leaf paste and grilled to perfection.

Maison Perumal - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

INTACH Pondicherry, an Indian organization that works to conserve the country’s unprotected heritage – much like VMF – is a 5-minute walk from Maison Perumal. It could make for a good day to soak in some Tamil culture and heritage through food and architecture, no?

Mass Seafood Restaurant

It breaks my heart that I didn’t lunch at this eatery en route to the Pichavaram Mangrove Forest because fresh seafood is what they’re known for.

the catamaran pondicherry

Still, being the first customer to be plated steaming idlis, crispy vada and hot sambhar, along with some good ol’ filter kaapi to wash it all down, is a sign of good things, yes?

Mass Seafood Restaurant - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

Mass Seafood Restaurant is the only eatery for miles if you’re visiting Pichavaram. Their fish fry, prawn curry and crab dishes along with steamed rice have rave reviews from almost everyone who eats here.

New Banana Café

Tucked away on the rooftop of an unremarkable storied house, New Banana Café offers what most restaurants in Pondicherry’s White Town don’t – a basic, laid-back ambience that’s evocative of shacks in Goa , Gokarna, and Varkala. Not many know of this place; I was introduced to it by Anita of Chez Pushpa.

New Banana Cafe - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

Come by for simple yet flavoursome and filling cafe-style food that’s mostly continental, with some Indo-French. Service takes time, but Senthil – the main man behind this 15-year-old hidden gem – makes it a point to serve each diner himself, whenever possible.

New Banana Café plates up some delicious galettes, quiches, gratins and pies. I’ve only tried the chicken pie that’s super-filling, but I’ve heard you can’t go wrong with anything else either. You will have to earn your place here though, by enduring a three-flights-of-stairs climb, which I believe will only work up a stronger appetite.

New Banana Cafe - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

Villa Helena

More recommendations by Anita included Villa Helena’s creme caramel and cheesecake. And it was a no-brainer to dine here since I stayed on this 19th-century colonial-heritage property for my visit this time!

the catamaran pondicherry

After a rather heavy lunch at Villa Shanti and a beverage at Le Dupleix, I decided to make just a teeny bit of room for dessert, but not before I cleaned a plate of olive oil and lime-drizzled smoked fish carpaccio as a post-dinner snack. I skipped the creme caramel and went straight for the cheesecake with raspberry compôte . It made for the perfect dessert to end a long, tiring day.

Villa Helena - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

Looking back, I should’ve had at least one proper global-cuisine-inspired meal at Villa Helena beyond the complimentary breakfast. There’s always a next time. Plus, the Villa’s cat Peticia and I forged quite a bond, and I already miss her, so I have to revisit, right?

the catamaran pondicherry

Villa Shanti

Restaurants have siblings too! Villa Shanti is the sister of La Villa but with the Ashram colours of austere grey and white, and a larger menu. Siblings, not twins.

Dining on the patio is a wise choice on breezy days or evenings, where chic white outdoor-dining furniture is set. Else, head to the café bar or the air-conditioned restaurant. As for the menu, there are tons of options across the French and Indian sections. Spoilt for choice, I went with my choice of a 3-course menu – the utterly refreshing Prawn and Pomelo Salad , the creamy Chicken Two-Way Cauliflower and the pièce de résistance, French Crème Brûlée .

Villa Shanti - What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

Service isn’t too slow, even when the restaurant is packed. I recommend reserving a table, especially for dinner.

Pondicherry Food Trail Wishlist

The downside of not being a full-time traveller is the limited time available, and the downside of travelling alone is that portions cannot be split, and often, I end up over-ordering. Both leave me with little-to-no room to dine at all the places I wish to. But, I have a strong feeling I will be travelling to Pondicherry again, so it’s wise to make a food trail wishlist for what’s to come, no?

What & Where to eat in Pondicherry

1 Rue Suffren – Drawn to the gorgeous bar if nothing else.

Bay of Buddha – Pan-Asian cuisine holds the key to my heart.

Bread & Chocolate – The Auroville one was packed with diners; I hear the Pondicherry outlet is just as good, especially for breakfast.

Café Des Arts – Said to be quite an Instagrammable space, so I expect it to be packed with people vying for a post-worthy capture. I have a feeling it’ll echo Kashi Art Cafe in Fort Kochi , only the white walls will be replaced with the quintessential yellow ones.

Chez Francis – Dune de L’Orient’s in-house restaurant is known for its French gourmet, Creole, and heritage Indian dishes.

Crêpe in Touch – For the crêpes, obviously

Le Dupleix – I was way too full from my lunch at Villa Shanti, so I only managed to gulp down a mint cooler here. Will be back for their limited but tempting French menu.

Les Alizes – Palais de Mahe’s restaurant has a limited menu of Pondicherry, Kerala, and Indo-French classics.

Les Saveurs – Croques, paninis, and tartines galore at this Promenade-facing French-themed restaurant, which also boasts of some supremely tempting mains like Eggplant Galette and Salmon Wellington.

Mass Seafood Restaurant – It’s a shame I missed out on the seafood.

Samosa joint – Anita gave me specific directions to where I can find this unnamed stall near Sounder travels, for mouth-watering samosas .

Sicilys – Next to GMT on Promenade, their wood-fired pizzas are said to be good.

Sri Kamatchi – the staff at Palais de Mahe recommended this non-vegetarian restaurant, and I trust locals when it comes to the authentic flavours of the land.

Surguru – Locals and travellers alike rave about the vegetarian food here, particularly their dosas .

Tanto Pizzeria – It’s worth the trip to Auroville, this! Their pizzas and pasta are drool-worthy. Been here a few years ago, and it definitely needs a revisit.

Xtasi – Another wood-fired pizza place, although I’ve heard their pies and barbecue chops are much better.

the catamaran pondicherry

If history and architecture don’t interest you, the food in Pondicherry is just the reason you need to travel there. It’s worth the tan lines and sweat pooling in your clothes.

On April 22, the first microbrewery in Puducherry will begin a brand-new endeavour.

On April 22, the first microbrewery in Puducherry will begin a brand-new endeavour.

This week will mark the first outing of the Beer Bus, which will offer beer lovers the chance to board with up to 40 other people every weekend

To relax in the sun, sand and enjoy cold beer, Pondicherry has long been a favourite tourist destination. In an effort to expand the tourism of the coastal city, the Catamaran Brewing Co. has launched a ‘Beer Bus’ that offers a unique experience to the tourists exploring the town.

Puducherry’s first microbrewery is launching an exciting new venture on April 22. For Rs 3000 per person, you can embark on a round trip from Chennai and indulge in a delicious 3 course meal, along with unlimited craft beer. If that’s not enough, you’ll also get a personal tour of the microbrewery.

The Beer Bus is all set to hit the roads with its maiden trip starting next Saturday, giving beer enthusiasts a chance to hop on board every weekend with up to 40 passengers. The journey promises to be an exciting 12-hour experience, with pick-up scheduled at 9 am from a pre-designated spot.

Catamaran Brewing Co, took to Instagram to share the thrilling news, they wrote, “Hop on board to the Brewery Tour Bus and experience the magic of our craft beer with the brewhouse tour and much more.”

While the idea of the Beer Bus may sound perfect, there is a major catch. Unfortunately, passengers won’t be able to drink any beer during the journey, as it is considered illegal. However, the bus will make a stop at a government-designated area in Pudvai where drinking is permitted on the premises.

According to an article by The Hindu Business Line, the founder of Catamaran Brewing Co., Prasad Radhakrishnan, revealed that the idea for the Beer Bus was born when a customer made a playful suggestion for a transport service from Chennai to Pondicherry, where beer is more affordable.

According to Radhakrishnan, the purpose of the bus is to provide a safe and enjoyable transport option for people traveling from Chennai to Pondicherry and to give them a taste of craft beer. He also noted that a bus is a great option for groups who want to have fun.

Soon after the company shared promotional offers about the beer bus on social media, people started showing interest and some even assumed that they would be able to drink unlimited beer while on the bus.

Prasad Radhakrishnan was surprised by the overwhelming response, as people expressed their interest in drinking beer on the bus. However, he also highlighted that the company would maintain “a zero-tolerance policy and no alcohol will be served in the bus” and any passengers who create disturbances would be dropped off at the nearest bus stop.

We were here for our friend's bachelorette and Catamaran Brewing Co. did a really great job by helping us with our last minute requests. Specially would like to mention Ms. Priya who took her time to make sure our needs were met. Food here was unique and excellent. Would highly recommend this place!

1. Food is exceptionally good. Menu had dishes from a variety of cuisines. 2. Customer Service is average. 3. Ambience is sort of okayish.

We visited the Catamaran Brewing Company during our visit to Puducherry. They serve around six of their Craft Beers ranging from pale ale to bitter. We tried three of them and found them awesome. We also ordered their Dumplings and Grilled Chicken which were delicious and fresh. We thoroughly enjoyed the ambience, décor and environment. The staff are courteous, helpful and great. A must place for a visitor to the City.

We stopped here for lunch and were impressed by the craft beers. We had the Indian summer (both versions) and found both to be quite nice. The ambience was nice, service could be quicker. The food was only average. We had dragon paneer, chicken jerk burger and wok tossed pak choy etc. The dragon paneer was good, the other two just ok.

Mangroves are one of the unique habitats which have become a forest in the past two decades with the help of locals and conservationists. Once you cross the mangroves, you will see the rows of fishing boats docked along the sides of the Pondicherry fishing harbour. On the other side fishermen in catamarans through a cast net in the Ariyankuppam river to catch fresh catches of the day. After crossing the port, you will reach the river mouth or estuary, where the river and sea join at this point. It will be a bumpy ride till you cross the estuary from the river to the Bay of Bengal.

Cruising in the sea is a fun activity, and it will be an experience that you will never forget. From the sea, you can see the Pondy Marina Beach, followed by the towering Lighthouse. The boat will cruise up to Rock Beach in White Town , Pondicherry and see another side of Pondicherry from the sea.

Swimming in the sea:

You will be asked to wear a life jacket at the sea cruise’s start. Life Guards will be there to take care of you. Tourists can enjoy swimming in the sea with the help of lifeguards. The instructor will explain the dos and don’ts before venturing into the sea. Swimming in the ocean is a surreal experience, a rare opportunity you should not miss when visiting Pondicherry.
