Historic 1930 luxury yacht to set sail out of B.C. waters forever

She has glided through the Great Bear Rainforest as grizzlies swiped salmon from streams. Amelia Earhart has walked across her warm teak deck, which hosted many extravagant cocktail parties. Her state rooms have welcomed celebrities such as Al Pacino.

But now, the Taconite, a 125-foot luxury yacht built in 1930 for the founder of Boeing Aircraft, has been sold to a foreign buyer, which has mariners worried she could sail out of B.C. waters forever.

The Taconite’s owner, Capt. Gordon Levett, listed her for sale for $2.5 million in 2015.

Since then, Kristina Long, a Taconite admirer who has captained other classic boats, has been trying to find a local buyer to prevent losing a B.C. treasure. Long had connected Levett with one potential Vancouver buyer who was thrilled by her pitch to re-establish the Taconite as a historical vessel, a sort of floating museum docked in Vancouver and available for luxury charter trips. However, in June, a French buyer swooped in before they could close the deal.

Long was gutted and she contacted Heritage Canada, Canada Border Services Agency and several Greater Victoria MLAs in an attempt to prevent an export permit from being issued.

So far, her efforts have been in vain.

“A lot of our wooden vessels here on the west coast that carry historical value, they get purchased and shipped out and then they’re gone forever,” Long said.

“That ship has always been in Canada,” said Jim Walters, the Taconite’s chief engineer since 1993.

STUART THOMSON, CITY OF VANCOUVER ARCHIVES

The yacht was built in Coal Harbour in 1930 as a pleasure craft for aviation pioneer William Boeing. The vessel, made out of Burmese teak, has five staterooms, a formal dining room and a salon with a wood-burning fireplace.

Its launch on June 11, 1930, attracted socialites and the well-heeled from across the Pacific Northwest. Amelia Earhart was a guest on the Taconite before her ill-fated attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937.

The Taconite carried Boeing’s first series of two-way radio communications, which he developed for his mail-carrying sea planes. It was from Taconite’s radio room, dubbed the “Texan” room, that Boeing carried out tests of initial transmissions, said Long, who has been researching the Taconite’s history through the Vancouver Archives.

Before the Second World War ended, Taconite was the first recreational vessel to operate with a ship’s radar in North America.

William and Bertha Boeing would spend summers cruising to Alaska. Often, William Boeing would take a float plane to catch up with the boat as it floated off Alaska.

“Bertha Boeing was the real boater in the family,” Levett told the Times Colonist. “She loved it, she was away on it from start to finish of the summer season.”

“It’s probably the most prominent pleasure boat [in B.C.]” Levett said.

Long said the ship is a living historical artifact, with original oil paintings and furniture dating to the late 1920s and early 1930s. Also kept with the boat are original build ledgers, work orders, dinner invitations and guest books signed by notable socialite families invited to cruise aboard the vessel.

Walters was hired as chief engineer in 1993 based on his expertise restoring and servicing luxury classic cars. Walters had been enthralled with the Taconite since his 20s, when he spotted her gliding through Desolation Sound while he was in a rowboat.

“I remember rowing alongside it, looking inside the brass porthole and being amazed by it, never believing that one day in the future I’d be running it,” he said.

Walters was the on-board engineer when the yacht was chartered out by anyone who could afford the $37,000-US-a-week price tag.

The yacht would cruise through the Inside Passage to Alaska, which at a leisurely speed of 12 knots, takes about three weeks. “It’s like you’re back in another era,” Walters said. “Time slows down. It’s really something.”

During one venture into the Great Bear Rainforest, Walters and the passengers watched grizzly bears hunt for salmon from a stream just seven metres away.

The Taconite provided a floating hotel for Al Pacino, Hilary Swank and Robin Williams in 2001 when they were in Alaska shooting scenes for the psychological thriller Insomnia.

Walters estimates he spent 700 hours rebuilding the starboard engine, an old Atlas-Imperial diesel engine, after a failure in 1994.

A lot of work goes into maintaining the ship, Walters said. Every few years, the teak floors need to be varnished, and the boat needs to be put into drydock to paint the hull.

The Taconite spent most of her days docked in Coal Harbour and Port Moody, but for the past year has been berthed in Maple Bay.

Prior to the latest sale, the yacht had only changed hands twice since Boeing built it: once in 1977 when the Boeing estate sold it to a man named Daryl Brown, and once in 1987 when it was sold to Levett, the former owner of the Pacific Coast Lines bus company. Levett restored the boat under the guidance of Bill Boeing Jr.

“It’s been in the Pacific Northwest all its life,” Levett told the Puget Sound Business Journal in 2015 after the boat was put up for sale. “And that’s where we hope to keep it.”

Levett acknowledges that the decision to remove the boat from B.C. waters is not a popular one.

“[The new owners] are meeting with quite a bit of opposition, I think, to taking it away from Canada, from this northwest area,” he said.

Levett said he would have liked to see the boat stay in Canada. However, he said there were only a few interested buyers and he sold to the one who made the best offer. The boat was sold for close to $1 million.

Levett, 78, told the Times Colonist he doesn’t know where the new owners will take the boat. Walters has been told that the plan is to take the Taconite to New York for retrofitting before it sails down to the Bahamas.

Both Walters and Long worry the heat and humidity will be harmful to the wooden boat. “A boat like that in the Bahamas is going to be destroyed in a couple of years,” Walters said.

Neither Walters nor Levett have been told when the new owners plan to collect this floating piece of B.C. history.

 Vancouver Archives

It’s a day Walters and Long are dreading.

“I’m just sick about it leaving,” Walters said.

“There are very few of the large classics left,” Long said. “This is the last one in B.C.”

Classic Boats Still Pay Their Keep By Chartering In Northwest Waters

The 127-foot schooner is pressed against a Lake Union pier by a bristling north wind: its sails furled, the wooden masts reaching more than 100 feet to snag low-flying clouds. The white hull and varnished wood show signs of use, but still dazzle.

The yacht, Zodiac, was launched in 1924 as a plaything of the rich. It's a vessel only a Bill Gates, a Paul Allen or Donald Trump could build in this decade.

Still, it and other fine classic motor and sailing yachts can be yours for a day - or a week.

More than a dozen such oldies are available for charter in ports from Seattle to Vancouver, B.C.

For most, upkeep is so costly that taking paying passengers is the only way they can stay afloat.

Some are expensive to rent: try $36,000 for a week of elegant luxury aboard Taconite, a 125-foot yacht Bill Boeing built for himself in 1930.

Others fit more modest budgets: an afternoon with snacks on Bentley, a 50-year-old 40-foot yacht for $150, for example. A 62-foot Seattle sailboat, Circe, built in 1932, will take 30 passengers on a half-day jaunt for about $700 (less than $25 each). The Zodiac will carry 20 on a weeklong trip for $2,000 a day, or $100 a day per passenger, meals included.

Also on the charter market are old work boats and fishing vessels that have been converted to carry passengers in comfort.

One such vessel is Duen, which, after 30 years of fishing under sail out of Norway, now home ports in Victoria, B.C., and carries passengers on wilderness explorations in the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Parry and Union Jack, half-century-old tugboats based in Vancouver, B.C., explore British Columbia waters each summer with paying guests looking for fish and adventure.

Without charter revenues, many of the classics would long ago have rotted away. The expense of keeping a fine wooden yacht 70 years old is more than even most wealthy owners want to bear alone today. There are only a few splendid large old boats in Seattle - Blue Peter, Canim and Malibu among them - that are maintained by families without being offered for charter.

Charter fees help keep many of these historically important vessels healthy. Painting and varnishing are done at least annually and out-of-the-water overhauls are needed occasionally, all at frightful cost.

Most are subsidized by their owners, by foundations, by volunteers who haul on lines, spread varnish and help replace damaged planks and beams.

Not "love boat" cruising

Cruising aboard such classics hints at the life of those who built them and offers the thrill of going to sea to those who otherwise might never look into a sea breeze and catch salt spray in the face.

This is not "love boat" cruising. You can choose your fellow cruise guests by gathering family or friends for the trip on a chartered classic.

You may be able to take the wheel and learn to sail, plot a course and navigate. You may launch a dinghy and go fishing for dinner. You'll anchor in remote harbors with only the stars for company.

Probably the most famous of the old-timers available for day charter in the Seattle area is the Virginia V, the last steam-powered vessel in service on Puget Sound.

At present, the Virginia V is out of the charter business while the nonprofit Virginia V Foundation raises more than $600,000 for extensive repair to the wood hull. It may be back in service for its traditional Christmas season excursions with the holiday fleet. It charters for about $1,800 a day.

Zodiac builds a following

Meanwhile, a cult-like following has grown up in the wake of Bellingham-based Zodiac, a gaff-headed schooner built in 1924 as an ocean racer for the family of the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical company.

For 40 years, it was a "pilot" boat in San Francisco Bay. Such boats ferried pilots from shore to large vessels where the pilots would guide the ship safely between the port to the open sea.

After retirement, it was purchased by the Vessel Zodiac Corp. and rebuilt and refurbished for charter on Puget Sound and in the San Juan Islands. Its crew is volunteer - only the cook is paid.

Carl Mehrer, a Seattle businessman who purchased the vessel and led restoration efforts for the Vessel Zodiac Corp., believes old sailing ships go to museums to die. The only way to keep them alive is to work them, he says.

Under charter 150 days a year, Zodiac is the busiest of the big classics in the Northwest. Individuals and groups come back year after year. It's a hit with the Elderhostel crowd, and marriages, anniversaries and promotions have been celebrated on its decks of 4-inch North Carolina yellow pine.

Loyd Chamblin and his wife, Margery, first boarded Zodiac on an Elderhostel trip several years ago. Always looking for active trips, they enjoyed working on deck on a weeklong cruise. This year, for their 50th wedding anniversary, the Chamblins, of Laguna Hills, Calif., reserved the Zodiac and spent a week in mid-August with 20 family members cruising the San Juan Islands and visiting Victoria.

"They wouldn't let us climb the rigging, but they would let us help set the sails," Chamblin said. "We could take the helm - and the captain didn't seem worried.

"I have a love and a longing for sail. She was launched the same year I was and we both now creak and groan, but we still get the job done."

The Zodiac's 4,000-square-foot mainsail is hauled aloft on a 101-foot mast by muscle power. Asked how many people it takes to hoist the main, Mehrer laughed: "All we have," he said.

"The Zodiac is the best buy in charter around today," said Robey Banks of Ledger Marine Charters in Seattle, an agent representing most of the area's charter vessels.

Aboard Adventuress

Another popular old-timer on Puget Sound is the Adventuress, a 136-foot wood sailing schooner built in 1913 for a wealthy East Coast businessman who wanted to explore the Arctic by sea.

It's now owned by Sound Experience, a nonprofit Port Townsend-based group that emphasizes protection of Puget Sound.

Jenell DeMatteo, executive director of Sound Experience, said the on-board staff discusses the sound and its problems. Marine life is brought aboard for passengers to study. The staff emphasizes "that we can make a difference through teamwork, either in dealing with environmental problems or hoisting sail," she said.

The Adventuress carries school children and adults on day trips March through October. It's available for weeklong trips and recently carried several Elderhostel groups on overnight San Juans cruises.

The Adventuress is licensed to carry 45 passengers on day sails for about $25 each. It can carry up to 25 persons on overnight sails; cost is about $65 a day for youngsters and $100 for adults. Meals are included. Gallant Lady

With the Virginia V out of service, Gallant Lady of Vashon Island is the oldest motor yacht in the local charter business. A 65-foot, single engine boat, it was built in Tacoma in 1940.

Every summer, a group of teachers from Hillsboro, Ore., charters Gallant Lady to celebrate the end of the school year.

Age makes the ship better, said Ron Crissman, a junior high school counselor. "Once you go aboard, it's a different atmosphere, with all that wood. There is something from the past you cling to and relax with."

This year, 20 teachers paid $2,800 for three nights of cruising in the San Juans, or $140 each. They brought food and cooked their meals. The owners, Dick and Lynn Cannon of Vashon Island, will provide full service for $1,500 a day.

The Cannons have owned Gallant Lady since 1985 and cruise from La Conner in the summer. During the winter it is moored at Vashon, and the Cannons offer bunk and breakfast for $45 a night.

A stunning classic on the Seattle charter market is Olympus, a gleaming white and varnished-teak, 97-foot motor yacht built in 1929 for the president of the New York Stock Exchange.

Now owned by John VanderBeek of Bellevue, it charters for $28,000 a week. It carries 12 passengers and a crew of four. It makes Lake Washington excursions for $300 an hour, with a four-hour minimum charge.

Olympus was appropriated by the Army for patrol duties in World War II. After the war, the state of Washington bought it from the government for $15,000 and it became the state yacht for Gov. Mon Walgren.

Walgren and his Democratic cronies played poker aboard the yacht and probably stunk it up with cigars and cigarette smoke. President Truman once rode it from Bremerton to Seattle. Walgren's Republican successor quickly sold the yacht and it has been privately owned since.

With fresh white paint and gleaming teak and mahogany, "her look is exactly the way it was when she came out of dry dock - she's all original (except for her engines and operating systems)," VanderBeek said.

"She has quite a nice ride. You can put down a glass of wine and leave it." That's a small point, but important on a yacht that may roll in heavy seas and send unsecured glassware flying.

While VanderBeek, a Bellevue businessman, keeps the financial aspects of owning Olympus to himself, it's obvious that charter income only helps pay the high cost of maintaining her in top shape.

"She takes constant care," VanderBeek said. "Today, there are seven people working on the boat - doing varnishing, maintenance and engine work."

Supporting themselves

Still, some of the old yachts support themselves.

Inge Morris of Vancouver, B.C., operates Elfin, an 83-foot motor yacht, as a for-profit business.

Elfin was built in 1942 as a U.S. Coast Guard cutter. It was a rescue boat in June, 1944, when Allied troops landed at Normandy. A picture of the cutter crashing through heavy seas off the French coast hangs in Elfin's salon.

Retired from the military in the late 1950s, it was refitted as a yacht. Morris bought it in 1990 after helping a friend bring it up the Pacific Coast from California.

Elfin carries 50 passengers on day cruises and 10 or 12 overnight. Day trips cost $300 (Cdn.) an hour. Seven days and nights cost up to $13,500 (U.S.), depending on the number of passengers.

The queen of the region's classic charter fleet is the elegant Taconite, the 125-foot motor yacht Bill Boeing had built at his Vancouver, B.C., ship-and-aircraft production plant.

Owned by Gordon Levett of Vancouver for nine years, it is operated primarily as a business. Its white paint sparkles and teak trim glows from many coats of varnish. Its crew makes the rounds daily, polishing brass fittings and mopping dew from her railings while tending to the wishes of passengers lounging on deck.

"She has a subtle elegance," Levett said. "The dining room is as original as the last day Boeing had dinner aboard," he said.

Boeing named her Taconite for the low-grade iron ore deposits he owned in the Mesabi Range of Minnesota and which provided the family fortune. The Boeing family owned Taconite until 1977.

Taconite carries eight guests on overnight cruises and a crew of six. Despite the week's charter fee of $36,000 it was booked through the summer, Levett said. Most of the passengers are Americans; many are repeat customers who love the luxury and style of the old yacht.

Charter cruising is about to end, with fall and winter approaching. For next season's cruising, it's not too early to begin talking up the idea of chartering a classic with family and friends.

While the classic yachts soon will return to their moorings and boathouses, their crews of volunteers and professional shipwrights will spend the winter making them as perfect as possible for those seeking to cruise with history next year. Bob Lane, a retired Seattle Times reporter, has cruised Puget Sound, British Columbia and Alaska waters more than 20 years. He holds a Coast Guard Masters license for inland waters. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sailing by the rules. Know what the Coast Guard says before chartering. Boeing Canada (1930)

taconite yacht charter

Hoffar was an early experimenter in combining the boat with the airplane. In 1914 his factory produced its first seaplane from sketchy plans in a magazine.

He later merged with the neighboring Beeching Boat Yard to become Hoffar- Beeching.

In the 1920s, the Seattle, Washington based Boeing Aircraft Co. purchased Hoffar-Beeching. This became Boeing’s first seaplane factory & test site. Hoffar was retained as the President of the Boeing Aircraft of Canada, Ltd.

The subsidiary started building seaplanes and testing them on the shores of Coal Harbor, but it is also noted for building wooden boats for Canadian Government and commercial service, fishing boats and even sail boats.

The Boeing family yacht Taconite, was launched in 1930 and still cruises the waters of the Northwest as a charter enterprise. James Hoffars personal yacht "Invader" was built in 1935 at the Fenner & Hood yard in Vancouver. See Invader's Boat Page

Kamaz FTL hauler registers NatCar brand

taconite yacht charter

MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - National Carrier JSC, the full truckload freight trucking company headed by former Globaltruck CEO Ilya Sattarov that Russian truck maker Kamaz founded this summer, applied to register the brand NatCar at the end of August, the registry of federal intellectual property service Rospatent showed.

The NatCar brand is also mentioned in the recruitment ads of National Carrier, which is actively looking for E-class drivers. It is offering working with this year's model Kamaz diesel trucks from the flagship K5 line and new dry goods (curtainsider) and refrigerated trailers.

National Carrier was founded on July 7 in Moscow with charter capital of 1 billion rubles, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities showed. The company registered two branches in early August, in Yekaterinburg and Elektrostal, Moscow Region. The company specializes in truck logistics and associated activities, including digitization processes.

A spokesman for National Carrier told Interfax earlier that the company plans to provide FTL trucking services using its own fleet, "as well as the resources of hired truckers." The company's fleet will initially consist of 400 semi-trailer trucks with a 50/50 ratio of curtainside to refrigerated trailers, and it plans to primarily operate on domestic routes, he said.

The company has preliminary agreements with major customers among marketplaces and retailers in the FMCG and DIY segments, the spokesman said. Strong demand for trucking services is expected toward the end of the year, so there is interest from customers, he said.

Kamaz marketing director Ashot Arutyunyan announced at the International Moscow Automotive Forum at the end of August that the truck maker was the principal investor in National Carrier. He did not comment on the new company's shareholder structure, but said it is a Kamaz startup.

Screen Rant

10 below deck charter guests who will never return to the franchise.

While the charter guests who appear on Below Deck have a great time while filming the show, many aren't invited back for a number of reasons.

  • Some charter guests on Below Deck have caused unnecessary drama and won't likely return due to bad behavior.
  • Captain Glenn Shephard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht faced backlash from Barrie, who called him two-faced.
  • Former guest Dr. Francis Martinis will not return to Below Deck after he was arrested for faking prescriptions.

The Below Deck franchise has featured many charter guests since 2013, many of whom will never return . The Bravo series focuses on expensive charters with wealthy guests who have attitude problems and over-the-top demands. That includes Charter guest Alexis Bellino, who boarded Captain Lee Rosbach’s yacht with her boyfriend at the time, Andy Bohn. She was disrespectful and made everyone uncomfortable with her and Andy's PDA. She even insulted crew members after featuring on the show.

Like Alexis, Delores Flora from Below Deck season 8 was a terrible guest. Not only did she misbehave, but she also got drunk and s wam while intoxicated, which is not only not allowed, it frightened the crew members. Delores got kicked out of the yacht the next day. These guests created unnecessary drama on the boat and will likely never return like a few others from the franchise.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

8 barrie & tony, below deck sailing yacht.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt Barlow had a decent time in the Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 2 and 3. Despite that, they left with a bitter taste because of Captain Glenn Shephard. In 2021, Barrie participated in a podcast, Pita Party: The Podcast , where he claimed that Captain Glenn bothered him while using his phone .

Barrie said, “he (Captain Glenn) was a two-face b*stard,” adding that he just didn’t like his presence.

7 Frank Fay

Below deck mediterranean.

In Below Deck Mediterranean season 7, Charter guest Frank Fay had a thing for second stew Kyle Viljoen. He pursued him on the yacht, but unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last. Frank will likely never return to the series as long as Captain Sandy Yawn allows Kyle to work for her. Even if Kyle quits, Frank wouldn’t want to be in an environment that would remind him of his failed relationship.

6 Erica Rose

Erica Rose appeared on Below Deck Sailing Yacht two seasons in a row. Erica was highly offensive toward the crew member, as well as her husband, Charles Sanders, and to make things worse, she left the crew with a measly tip , leading fans to slam her on social media. Ultimately, Erica had to apologize for her bad attitude but never returned to give the crew the tip they deserved. Nobody on Below Deck Sailing Yacht would ever want to return.

5 Justin Guarini

Justin Guarini’s time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht was not dramatic at all; however, he’ll probably never return to the series. Justin wouldn’t return because he wasn't the primary guest. He joined his friend, Kim, who wanted to enjoy a luxury yacht trip. It was more of a one-and-done deal. Secondly, nobody recognized him at all. Viewers later realized who he was and how he was the runner-up on American Idol season 1. Justin is a theatre artist and has made a name for himself. However, it was embarrassing that so many fans had no clue who he was .

Below Deck: 8 Charter Guests With The Worst Attitudes

4 johnny damon.

Johnny Damon’s time at Below Deck Med was full of explosive moments. Once, he sent the food back, citing that the experience wasn’t “five stars.” On another occasion, his wife, Michelle, created drama by yelling at the owner of another yacht . Overall, the experience was simply terrible on both sides. Crew members didn’t love Johnny and his wife, and the couple didn’t respect the crew members. It is unlikely that Captain Sandy would want to host the couple again as long as she’s in charge.

3 Krystal Murphy

Former charter guest Krystal Murphy boarded Captain Lee’s yacht with her friends. She immediately began showing red flags, drinking, and just being a menace. Krystal fought with her friend, Chelsea, creating unnecessary drama. She even passed out and punched a friend in the face. Former Chief Stew Kate Chastain disliked serving Krystal and called her a “spoiled brat;” she wanted to throw her off the yacht. Nowadays, Krystal has seemingly become a more private person. It doesn’t seem like Krystal would want to be on TV again.

2 Steve Bradley

Below Deck fans should remember Steve Bradley as he made many appearances on the show. In Below Deck season 3, he wanted a foam party and demanded the crew to figure it out and follow his commands, acting like a king. In Below Deck season 6, Steve made more outrageous requests. Apart from being a wild guest, Steve was entitled and acted inappropriately at times . No Below Deck captain would want to host him again as he didn't come off as very likable.

1 Dr. Francis Martinis

Below deck mediterranean & below deck sailing yacht.

Dr. Francis Martinis from Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht has a zero chance of returning. While the former charter guest didn’t have too many issues on the show, his personal life issues will stop him from appearing on Bravo again. According to TMZ , Dr. Francis and his wife, Jessica, were arrested for filling out fake prescriptions in December 2023 . The couple used the names of Below Deck stars and got caught red-handed. The Below Deck franchise would never want to welcome felons, especially when their mugshots are all over the internet.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

Below Deck is a popular reality TV franchise that focuses on a group of crew members as they work on luxurious yachts and cater to their client's needs. After the original series proved to be a success, Bravo developed a handful of spinoff shows including Below Deck Selling Yacht, Below Deck Adventure, Below Deck Down Under, and Below Deck Mediterranean.
