Dancing through the world of words, hidden treasure under the shadow of the golden gate bridge.

1b7757f06c56bec25ca1222c10593336

The Travis Marina Bar is hidden on the edge of the harbor in Horseshoe Cove in Travis Marina at Fort Baker. Most people are unaware of the club right under their noses when they drive north from San Francisco to Marin County over the bridge.

Up a flight of rickety wooden stairs there is no sign, but Christmas lights invitingly wink and twinkle as jovial banter floats out the open door. Seagulls wheel overhead, while sea lions pop up from the sea bream and bark.

The long, polished bar across the scuffed wooden dance floor is populated by various local characters—it’s a hangout. Nary a tourist in sight.

A collection of overstuffed leather chairs and couches angle around the windows facing the bay. Get here before dark so you can witness the beauty of water turning from sharp copper to jet-blue caressed by the setting sunlight. Or it might be a foggy dusk when the soft, pale blanket of mist hovering over jade-grey waters dims and fades into the foghorned night.

On nights when there is a band—usually Friday-Sunday—join couples and singles swinging about to blues, country, or rock-and-roll standards. The folks at the bar chat you up when you mosey over for a pint, and the dancers beckon the couch potatoes to get up and shake a leg. It is a very friendly crowd.

Fort Baker, where this wonderful tavern is located, is a 335-acre former U.S. Army post that has been incorporated into the vast, open park space of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The cannon gun placements and Nike missile launch sites still poke their rusty, rumbled heads above the lacy fields of fennel and waving rattlesnake grass that surround the dilapidated piers and buildings.

Originally inhabited by coastal Miwok tribes, Horseshoe Cove became home to Fort Baker long before there was a Golden Gate Bridge. In 1866, the U.S. Army acquired the site for a military base to fortify the north side of the Golden Gate. The Army post remained active through World War II.

A myriad of honeycombed trails leading into the Marin Headlands are an excellent place to explore by foot or bike. A public fishing pier just past the Coast Guard station is situated almost underneath the Bridge. Panoramic views captivate, with San Francisco rising like Oz across the spangled waters. As you crane your neck to look up at the bridge, it seems immense and is gloriously lit. At night the pier is bustling with fishermen bundled up from the ice-chill winds, patiently waiting to hook jacksmelt, sanddab, rockfish, king salmon, sturgeon, and crabs.

Nestled against the Scotch-broom-swathed hillside is the juxtaposition of the funky and friendly yacht club. Surrounding the ten-acre Fort Baker parade grounds are classic officer buildings that have been renovated and now house Cavallo Point Resort. Valets park sleek Jaguars, Rolls-Royces, and Teslas that zoom up to the entrance of the hotel and restaurant.

The Presidio Yacht Club was organized at the Presidio of San Francisco in 1959, and maintains a yacht harbor on Horseshoe Cove with 70 berths, guest docks, maintenance facilities, and a clubhouse open to the public managed by Travis Air Force Base (go figure!). The club and its members are active in Bay Area yacht racing, power and sail cruising, and the local, regional, and international boating community.

The bar hovers above a seaweed-strewn beach dotted with racing canoes. Watching the Tamalpais Outrigger Canoe Club teams launch their boats into the turbulent bay to paddle energetically out to the choppy waters is also invigorating, in a passive sort of way.

Sunset is the perfect time to arrive, when you get to see the Golden Gate Bridge glowing in the daylight and then transitioning to her glittering, swooping necklace at night. On foggy days, maybe not—but then you get the call of the foghorns and the International Orange eerie glow of her fabulous towers and spans.

Discover this hidden gem in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge—savor the music, the drinks, and the best views ever. The characters dancing on the old wooden floor are a fine and copacetic mix of young rangers and researchers from the park service; employees from the nearby museum and Coast Guard station; and old salts with barnacled fishing boats and yachts tied up at the dock.

Details, details…

Travis Marina Bar is currently open for indoor seating, Live Music & Private Events on Fridays 4pm-8pm; Saturday 12pm-8pm; Sunday 12pm-6pm.

It is located in Horseshoe Cove, Fort Baker, Sausalito, on the second floor of the Travis Sailing Center. Look for the wooden stairs on the far side of the building. Guest docks are available if you sail there.

Check the events calendar page to see if the bar is open (sometimes they close for private events), and if there is live music.

How To Drive There:

Take Alexander Avenue off of Highway 101. It is the last exit before driving onto the Golden Gate Bridge going south, and the first exit after the vista point going north. Take Alexander Drive down the hill till you see Danes Drive and then, just before the tunnel, turn right onto Bunker Road and follow it down to the pier and Horseshoe Cove.

Closed for a private party with no notice on website again. The location is great, but they have a history of booking for private parties, and there is no notice on their web site. They don't answer the phone so you can't call, either.

Not what you expect and that is a good thing. I thought I was lost when I drove up to the unassuming building sitting practically underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. Once inside I could tell this was going to be a fun event. The setting was funky, the people funkier, and the entertainment was all that and more. Somehow they were able to manage to fit a decent size group of people and still have space for my set up. All in all a wonderful experience and I hope to have an opportunity to return. Funky

Talk about "off the beaten path." But totally worth the trek. Came here recently for a friend's birthday. I've long heard of this place from my older/hippier Marin friends. They all swear by this joint. From what I had heard, I was expecting more of a dive bar. But this place (once you find it) is a legit music/bar/party venue. Plus, it boasts some pretty spectacular Golden Gate Bridge views (you're almost stone's throwing distance from the bridge). On the night we came, they happened to have a fireworks show around Pier 39. So we went on to the Presidio Yacht Club's deck and watched the whole thing. We pretty much had the best seats in the Bay Area. Around 7:30pm, an old-school rock band started cranking out the tunes. I saw a few folks hit the dance floor. It was def a lively scene. While I had a fun time time, there were a few things that I wasn't crazy about... 1) The drinks were WAY over-priced. I order two Makers Marks on the rocks and it cost me $28. That's even expensive by San Francisco standards. 2) While they do accept credit cards, they only accept cash gratuity (so make sure you visit the ATM before you get there). 3) Their food offerings are fairly limited and unimpressive. I saw a few pizzas come out of the kitchen that were clearly microwaved frozen pizzas. 4) Not all Uber drivers like making the trek out here (given its off-the-beaten-path location). I had two drivers in a row cancel on me. But if you're looking for a fun, funky venue for a Friday/Saturday night (and maybe get your groove on), I would highly recommend paying the Presidio Yacht Club a visit.

This is a special place for us and so we decided to get married here. We reached out, chatted by email and phone with the event coordinator, Louis and then make an appointment to sign the paperwork. We come. Louis is nowhere to be found. We waite. An hour. We get agitated. Finally someone shows up, not Louis. That person pages him. He calls him. We call him. Nothing. So the guy who showed up saya he will try to help us. He didn't have a calendar for the following year. He noted on a post-it our date, took the deposit and printed out contract. Louis was still not there. A few months later. We want to change the date. We email Louis. He says, "possibly. Call me on Monday at 4." We call, no answer. For the duration of the month, we keep calling, a few times per week, emailing and we get zero response. We feel completely unconfident that the wedding is actually happening. So we call one last time and we cancel. Now, they keep our deposit and are here to mess up another couple's wedding on that same date next year. Stay away

We just stopped here after a trip to the Bay Area Discovery Museum. What a hidden gem! Highly recommend if you're looking for a place to grab lunch and a beer but is also super kid friendly. It's been raining for weeks and our kids (and us) needed to get out of our 900sq foot apartment. We hit up the Discovery Museum in the morning and needed to grab lunch before heading home when we stumbled upon the Yacht Club. They had a huge empty dance floor the kids could play on without hurting themselves or disrupting other patrons, large bay windows with a beautiful view of The Golden Gate Bridge, and a cozy couch in the back. They had a decent selection of kid friendly food (burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese) and beers for the adults. I have to admit our kids were on the energetic side which is stressful for any parent (did I mention it's been raining for weeks) but the bartender and manager were super understanding and mentioned they too have kids! This was so refreshing. So many places aren't kid friendly and as a parent it can be hard to go anywhere without feeling like you have to constantly apologize. I would highly recommend this place to any parent who wants to maintain some semblance of a grown up life with afternoon beer in a place you can just let kids be kids.

The best experience I could have ever had! We had our wedding in August here and it was a dream, everyone took great care of us and answered all of our questions. Two words: the view. You will thank yourselves for the gorgeous backdrop in all of your photos! Just a fun, funky, original space for someone with creative ideas. The nice part was we could bring in all our own vendors, no cake cutting fees, or other dumb fees, with exception of a bar as they do have an awesome full bar upstairs (btw the lighting in the bar makes for really great photos no extra lighting necessary!). We did bring our own wine for dinner, with a corkage fee (that was it though!). I promise you, Louie and Miguel will not disappoint! All our guests said they had a great time. We used the beautiful turquoise boathouse for the dinner portion as we had around 140 guests but many more could fit in there if needed. 13/10 would throw a wedding there again!

Great Views from the small patio area. There is space inside for nightly music, but I have only been here in the afternoon during bike rides and walks around the area. Kid and Dog friendly during the afternoon time. Stop in and have a drink!

At the pre-party for our New Year's Eve celebration, my guy friend (clarification: not my bf) popped a champagne cork into his eye :( Not being able to come to the party, he really missed out. The Presidio Yacht Club is MUCH more fun than the ER...! Our friends chartered a yellow school bus to take 50 of us up to the gorgeous Presidio Yacht Club (just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge). When we arrived, we spent several minutes taking pictures of the the gorgeous bay view before entering the party. They cleverly decorated the already very neat space of the club. Even better, the drinks were REASONABLE! Beers were $3.50 - $5.50, cocktails were $6, etc. We only had one bartender, Bree, but she was super sweet and efficient. She even let me design my own shots with vodka, Bailey's, and Kahlua. We enjoyed the tables set at the perfect height for gazing at the Golden Gate Bridge and the little dance floor in the middle with fun tunes. I would love to plan another party here or come on a random night as it is a blast!

Travis marina and the presidio yacht club.

Food/Drink - Cafeteria

Travis Marina hosts the Presidio Yacht Club , a community of international boating enthusiasts and servicemen. Although membership is open to the public, the Club retains its strong military heritage. Every second Saturday of the month is an all-volunteer work day at the club, followed by dinner. Active duty personnel enjoy discounted services, including free membership and preference for open berths.

WWII Marine Repair Shop

In order to maintain the boats that tended the underwater mines placed outside the Golden Gate during WWII, the army established a marine repair shop in the building that's now the Presidio Yacht Club. Boat repairs covered by the marine repair shop included repurposing boats, reconditioning engines, painting, scraping barnacles and straightening propeller shafts. The boats were hauled out for repair on the train tracks leading into the water.
