pearl 62 yacht review

Pearl 62: On board Pearl Yachts' latest superyacht

With competitors backed by powerful international conglomerates, the only way for family-run builders to survive is to do things better – or differently. Andrew Johansson says Pearl Yachts’  latest model, the Pearl 62, promises both...

As I approach the 18.6-metre Pearl 62, moored in Southampton on a wet and gusty day, it is clear that she is an attempt to revive the essence of the British brand’s obsolete Pearl 60 and 65. The exterior styling, by Dixon Yacht Design , embraces the visual DNA of these older models while offering modern appeal with larger windows and longer, uninterrupted stretches of glass. Crucially, these stylistic advances retain the signature look of a Pearl yacht.

“There are clear and simple lines on the profile that we wanted to carry over from one boat to the other,” explains Bill Dixon, founder of Dixon Yacht Design, who has a long-standing relationship with the British shipyard. “While you style the outside, you need to ensure it will work on the inside too. The secret to this boat was creating it as a whole and then making sure each space worked with the other.”

In a marketplace offering a healthy variety of options, relying on the tried-and-tested simply won’t cut it: maintaining client interest is harder than ever. This fact is all too evident to Pearl Yachts’ managing director Iain Smallridge, who wanted to combine new ideas with the successes of the past to meet today’s client demands. The goal was to deliver a product that offers more than its competitors and execute it to a standard expected of much larger boats.

“We wanted to replicate the success we had with the Pearl 60, which was an aft cabin design, on the Pearl 62,” says Smallridge. “The USP of the Pearl 60 was that it had four cabins. We sold about 30 boats over a period of eight or nine years, making it the most successful model we’ve had to date. So, with the Pearl 62 we have a full-beam owner’s suite with dedicated staircase amidships, along with a double and two twin suites up forward and the option of a crew cabin or jet ski garage aft, which is unique in the market.”

With the exterior taking a back seat to the requirements of the layout, a generous internal space has been achieved with decorative schemes to suit most tastes – the yard offers two options on the 62. Stepping through the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and into the main saloon, the quality is immediately evident on this modern interior edition. The light colour palette with dark accents, together with materials such as wood and marble, have been used throughout.

The interior design’s attention to detail is worthy of a superyacht. The wooden frame that bridges the main saloon to the galley on the main deck, for example, has been constructed from individually cut wooden pieces sandwiched together – rather than routing one piece of wood – to create an engaging vertical ribbed effect.

This detail is replicated on doors, panelling and furniture throughout the yacht. The wooden frame’s slats also act as a visual break between the two internal zones of the boat without obstructing the valuable views fore and aft.

“The joinery detailing is very organic and sculptural, using a blonde wood mixed with black and neutrals,” says Kelly Hoppen, founder of Kelly Hoppen Interiors and the Pearl 62’s interior designer. “For me, the change of textures and colour was the difference [on this project], as well as the sculptural moulded joinery, which I adore. I also love the ribbed effect throughout the yacht, enhancing the layering of textures and lighting details, which are always so important on a yacht.”

The main saloon, guest cabins and owner’s suite feel larger than they actually are thanks to the carefully planned layout and head height that rises and dips with the floor level. Multiple windows and a spacious staircase forward lead the eye ahead to the double guest suite in the bow on the lower deck. Access to this cabin is via a spacious lobby from which two twin suites are accessed. Above the double cabin is a sunpad and forward-facing seating with a foldaway teak table, while the aft deck hosts al fresco dining. The flybridge includes additional seating and sun loungers, a wet bar and cool box with shade provided by an optional hardtop with retractable sunroof.

“When we developed the Pearl 75 in 2014 we wanted a different angle on the interior design.  All the production boat builders tend to produce variations of the same theme and we all followed a predictable pattern,” says Smallridge as he explains why Pearl Yachts commissioned Hoppen for the 62.

“When we began with the Pearl 75, we wanted something that was stylish and designer but wasn’t a variation of someone else’s theme. So when I was introduced to Kelly’s work, I really liked her style, the quality of the design and its exclusivity. I think anyone who looks at our yachts styled by Kelly Hoppen will quickly understand why we went down that road.”

This partnership certainly offers something different from the market, but the special appeal of this boat is really the space on offer. By adopting the qualities of the Pearl 60 combined with a fresh new look outside and in, and by pushing the engines as far aft as possible with the use of Volvo IPS drives, Pearl has made this yacht bigger than would otherwise have been possible. In particular, the space saving nature of the pods allows for a jet ski garage or crew cabin above them. While the engine room is fitted with one of three twin engine options, at the time of writing most clients have specified the most powerful IPS 1200s.

In short, the Pearl 62 delivers what the market wants – a spacious, well-executed and finished yacht that is simple for owners to navigate. The limited production of these boats over its competitors also adds an element of exclusivity. The quality and space that comes with the 18.6-metre is evident as soon as you step on board, and with nine boats already sold and interest continuing to grow, the Pearl 62 is on course to beat its much-loved predecessors in every sense.

Pearl 62 review: New flybridge contender doesn’t follow the crowd

  • Top stories

With four double cabins, sprawling deck spaces and a stunning Kelly Hoppen interior, the Pearl 62 is looking to shake up the 60ft flybridge market.

There are some manufacturers that effortlessly imbue their boats with a sense of occasion. Sunseeker , Riva , and Pershing have long had it mastered and in recent times it’s Galeon that has been dropping jaws for fun in the boat show aisles.

The new Pearl 62, the smallest model of the current range, is a worthy new addition to this club. It’s a boat that has real presence, even from the pontoon where its height, style and impressively hefty mouldings and deck gear make it appear larger than its LOA of 61ft would suggest.

It just so happened that the boat berthed behind the Pearl was a Princess F62, which it dwarfed in comparison. Head to the flybridge and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped aboard a boat of more than 70ft.

The hardtop isn’t standard but every boat ordered thus far has had it and it’s easy to see why. It’s subtly integrated and features a retracting canvas section that opens the helm, dinette and extended wet-bar to the sky when the weather suits.

Our test boat – hull number one – had the option of two L-shaped seating pods with free-standing stools at the aft end of the deck but there are variations.

You can have just a sun pad or the sun pad to port and keep an L-shaped pod to starboard, the layout to go for in my eyes as it offers the best mix of space to stretch out in the sun and some snug corner seating to enjoy a sundowner with a fine view out over the water.

Update: The Pearl 62 is due to go on display at the 2022 Cannes Yachting Festival .

Debuting Now: The Pearl 62

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: March 20, 2020

Pearl Yachts 62

The Pearl Yachts 62 is the entry-level yacht in the builder’s flybridge series, which also includes an 80- and 95-footer. The 62’s exterior design is by Bill Dixon, with interiors by Kelly Hoppen.

There is a four-stateroom, three-head layout with three heads. The 62’s master stateroom has a private entrance to starboard off the salon and is full-beam with an aft-facing berth. There is an en suite head with separate shower stall. Flanking the berth is a vanity to port and a two-seat breakfast nook to starboard. Hullside windows let in natural light and work in concert with the lighting and light-tone fabrics to keep the stateroom feeling open and airy.

Pearl Yachts 62

There are three guest staterooms, starting with a forepeak VIP with en suite head and step-up berth. Abaft the VIP to port and starboard are two twin-berth guest staterooms that convert to doubles. The portside guest stateroom has direct access to the third head, which is also accessed via the companionway. Like the master stateroom, all guest staterooms benefit from light coming in via hullside windows.

There is an option for a crew cabin aft, but most U.S. owners will likely use this space for PWC stowage.

Pearl Yachts 62

The Kelley Hoppen-designed interior offers owners four themes: Modern, Studio, Taupe and Luxury. Owners can choose from a selection of materials to personalize their yacht’s interior, including items such as suede and Calacatta marble.

The galley, equipped with Miele appliances, is positioned aft in the salon to easily service guests in the cockpit and in the salon. Across from the galley is a breakfast nook with a table and two chairs. There is U-shaped seating forward and to port, and a settee and helm console to starboard.

Pearl Yachts 62

Nearly 360 degrees of glass provides unobstructed sightlines from the lower helm, which has two seats. The 62’s power options are Volvo Penta IPS diesels, ranging in horsepower from 725 hp to 900 hp apiece (IPS950s, IPS1050s or IPS1200s).

Al fresco spaces include the cockpit’s U-shaped seating and dining table, a foredeck lounge with sun pads for four or more guests. The sun pads can also be shaded with an awning and four carbon fiber poles.

Pearl Yachts 62

The flybridge has an extended deck aft with L-shaped lounges to port and starboard, U-shaped seating and dining table amidships to port. A sun pad is forward with the helm console to starboard. Abaft the helm is a grill and a wet bar.

Some notable options for the Pearl 62 includes a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer, hardtop with sunroof, hydraulic some platform and side boarding door, to name a few.

British luxury motoryacht builder Pearl Yachts’ new Pearl 62 was announced ‘Best Flybridge over 50ft’ category during the latest Motor Boat Awards, which are administered and judged solely on product merits by the editorial team at UK monthly magazine Motor Boat & Yachting (MBY). Having announced a shortlist of contenders as usual in December, the winners and a few ‘highly commended’ runners up were finally disclosed last night during a streamed event co-hosted by MBY’s editor Hugo Andreae and deputy editor Jack Haines. Those awards can be viewed in their entirety at  www.mby.com/mby-motor-boat-awards. Normally these coveted awards conclude during a gala dinner at a top London hotel with a large marine industry and VIP audience, but alas this year ongoing pandemic mitigation measures demanded a virtual delivery.

Announcing the Volvo Penta IPS-propelled 32-knot Pearl 62’s win Hugo Andreae stressed that Pearl’s naval architect Bill Dixon has pulled off a “major design coup, by managing to fit four stellar cabins, plus crew space, aboard a boat of this size”, coupled with “strong performance and solid seakeeping”. He went on to add that “the Pearl 62 doesn’t just feel larger and more sophisticated than its dimensions suggest, it also has a stunning Kelly Hoppen interior that works on a practical level too”. He concluded by saying “but arguably the biggest achievement is that Pearl has managed to deliver all this while still undercutting its key competitors”.

“The annual Motor Boat Awards are always keenly anticipated and this year we were thrilled to see the stunning new Pearl 62 win in such a hotly contested 50-80ft category,” says Pearl Yachts’ managing director Iain Smallridge. “But then we already knew this model is a real winner. Having first presented the model a year ago at the 2020 Boot Dusseldorf, we have already seen just how well it has been received by our customers and potential customers. To date we have sold no fewer than eight of them and the ninth will deliver in spring next year.”

pearl 62 yacht review

The new Pearl 62

Presented at the latest Düsseldorf Boat Show, the Pearl 62 is a family yacht, easy to use. Starting aft, the yacht can be fitted with an optional up/down bathing platform that also glides outwards to become a terrace on the sea. The transom has a built-in bench that can be used as seating or as a passageway if a tender is stowed on the platform and it lifts to reveal a jet ski garage that can alternatively be fitted as a crew cabin. The bathing platform has runners so that launching a jet ski from the garage is a breeze.

pearl 62 yacht review

Starboard steps lead to the aft cockpit where there is a large table with banquette seating. The glass doors leading to the saloon slide all the way sideways and a window slides down so that the cockpit opens onto the saloon to become a large indoor/outdoor space. Kelly Hoppen proposes four interior style themes for the Pearl 62: Modern, Studio, Taupe and Luxury all of which incorporate materials ranging from Calacatta marble to suede so that owners can personalise the yacht to suit their taste.

pearl 62 yacht review

The saloon has large glazed areas that sweep upwards so that the interiors are bathed in natural light. Starting aft, there is a fully equipped galley with Miele appliances, a private stairway leading to the owners’ cabin, a dining area and a living area next to the indoor helm station. Helm seats are adjustable and owners can choose to add a side door by the helms. A second stairway leads down to the VIP and the twin cabins.

pearl 62 yacht review

Side decks lead to the foredeck where guests will find a large seating area complete with foldaway table that disappears into the seating and sun pads with adjustable backrests. There are plenty of drinks holders and lockers and the area can be fitted with an optional Bedouin style canopy.

The full-length flybridge is accessed via a staircase on the starboard side of the aft cockpit. This large and versatile space has a helm station with joystick controls and Garmin touch screens with controls for everything from the yacht’s anchor to its Fusion entertainment system. Next to the helms there is comfortable seating that can convert to become sun pads.

pearl 62 yacht review

A hardtop with an opening central section is optional but a wet bar with a cool box, sink and BBQ grill is standard. An icemaker and fridge can be added if owners desire. Across from the wet bar there is banquette seating and a dining table for eight. Owners can set up the aft section of the flybridge as they please with loose furniture or side couches.

pearl 62 yacht review

Exceptionally for a yacht in this size range, the Pearl 62 has four guest cabins. The full beam owners’ cabin is accessed via a private stairway and features a large, centrally placed bed, a desk, a reading corner and his and hers closets. Long hull windows mean that owners can enjoy the view even lying down. The cabin’s en-suite has Calacatta marble finishes, a large sink and a shower stall.

pearl 62 yacht review

Two twin cabins can both convert to doubles. The port side twin has direct access to a bathroom that is shared with the starboard twin and that also functions as a day head. The VIP cabin is fore and has a large, centrally placed bed, a dressing table, his and hers storage and an en-suite with a walk-in shower. All cabins and bathrooms enjoy excellent light and views through Pearl’s signature hull windows.

pearl 62 yacht review

Volvo IPS propulsion gives the Pearl 62 optimal performance and efficiency characteristics while joystick controls with dynamic positioning system and an integrated Garmin touch-screen display make helming and accessing all of the yacht’s systems easy and intuitive.
