The notorious Tasman Sea between New Zealand and Australia is one of the roughest bodies of water in the southern hemisphere, making it as good a place as any for shaking down a new yacht. Such an area was a fitting place to test Mea Culpa , a new 130-foot “yacht fisher built by McMullen & Wing for exploring the oceans of the world.

“I wanted a yacht that could fish the west coast from Alaska to Central America, said her owner. “But I’ve been a sportsman all my life, and by the time we established all the features and attributes of the design, the concept grew from 100 feet to 130 feet and it was clearly a worldwide voyager.

The owner, who asked that his name be withheld, hired noted naval architect Jack Sarin for the design. Sarin is often credited for first developing the concept of a large “yacht fisher and designed the early versions of the “megayacht with a sport fishing attitude. He seemed the natural choice for this multi-purpose yacht.

Mea Culpa ‘s all-business look with a reverse sheer and a rakish profile, futuristic composite tower and multi-tiered afterdeck arrangement does not betray the exquisitely crafted palatial interior. This SUV of the seas is ready for far-flung adventures and serious fishing, but is also a great family yacht for pampering children and friends.

The concept of a 100-foot plus fish boat is often debatable among serious anglers. The question of the ability to raise fish and maneuver is often questioned. In fact Sarin himself had a few reservations.

“At first I thought this boat might be too large and luxurious to really fish effectively”, Sarin recalled. “I wondered if it could back down effectively, but we shaped the hull accordingly, put in the right power, customized it with multiple steering stations and tweaked a variety of scenarios until we were all happy.”

Mea Culpa was put to the test fishing off Tasmania and then crossed the Tasman Sea and used Sydney Harbor as a base for the season before traveling north to tag marlin off the Gold Coast. The owners also enjoy kicking back and fishing for the smaller stuff.

“Fishing with the big guns is not only what we’re about”, said Captain Mike Hein. “The owner and his family cherish their time at a quiet anchorage. After dinner, he and his wife might turn on some music and retreat to the stern where they fish off the swim step into the late evening, bringing in John Dory or just watching the squid rocket past the stern lights.”

Fishing will not be the only activity taking place on board Mea Culpa . She has a full complement of scuba gear with 12 tanks and snorkel gear for 20. The yacht also has a compressor and twin underwater jet packs, as well as a hydraulically controlled swim step that lowers one meter below water level, easing access for either tank-laden divers or a boarding swimmer. Cranes on the upper afterdeck and forward have the capacity to launch the yacht’s PWCs .

Twin MTU 12V4000s power Mea Culpa to a top speed of 23.5 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. For a 130-foot yacht, these are impressive numbers and give her the legs needed to explore fishing grounds off the beaten path. McMullen & Wing built Mea Culpa with composites of E-glass and PVC coring with epoxy resin and Kevlar and carbon fiber, creating a light, stiff and solid hull.

The cockpit is enormous and has multiple slush ice bait tanks and easy freezer access. There is a trick barbecue that hydraulically lifts through the deck along with a custom skeet launcher. There are large bow and stern anchors; the stern supports a Muir capstan and 35-ton hydraulic winches, all of which can be removed while fishing.

Forward on the California deck a Hi-Lo table swings from cocktail to dining height, and the entire back deck can be enclosed and heated or air conditioned. Like drawers of precious silver, custom rods and reels are stowed on this deck.

Looming more than 50 feet off the water, a towering composite mast stands out as the most distinctive feature on Mea Culpa . Like a sky box that would make any dignitary happy at a major league game, the crow’s nest sits partway up and has twin helm seats. Every control onboard is on a fingertip dash display, including hydraulically controlled outriggers.

From this catbird’s seat, there’s the view of the flying bridge below with three Stidd helm seats that swivel into place to align with a seven-person dining settee. One deck below is the recessed sun pad with retractable stainless handrails that maintain the flush profile.

Belowdecks the rich satin-stained Honduras mahogany interior is inviting with soft tones of granite, marble and stainless accents and thematic moldings that run cabin to cabin. The main saloon is plush with down-filled settees forming multiple seating areas and a low divider forming the dining area with a complete bar to starboard. Lighting fixtures and vases are from Morano, Italy, and all the marble is from the owner’s own Italian quarry.

The interior is a successful collaboration of luxury and casual. The tastefully appointed décor is not so refined that a weary fisherman, fresh from battling big game, wouldn’t be welcome to relax.

The master suite is on the main deck level and has a remote opening skylight over the king-size bed. Four guest cabins on the lower deck branch off from an art-laden central foyer. One queen stateroom is designed to transform into a twin. Two decks up, the skylounge doubles as the owner’s secluded study, as well as a comfortable den with a complete library and a full-size desk with dual flat screens that double for ship’s operations and computer tasks. The isolated owner’s office provides a private head and a full bar. A limo-styled window divider with an etched glass map of the world separates the area from the wheel house while providing a stern view for the concerned helmsman peering aft.

While future yacht fishers may some day be faster, bigger and more sophisticated, there are few that will ever claim to have so completely satisfied an owner and designer, or been as faithful to the original mission statement as Mea Culpa .

“It was for our office the most comprehensive detailed project we’ve ever faced, said Sarin, “but surprisingly this owner/architect ended up as one of our most satisfying client-owner relationships. All projects are a series of difficult choices, and he never overrode our decisions and knew exactly when to accept our strengths and when to offer his aesthetic input.

There is little doubt from captain and owner that this boat can go anywhere and handle just about any conditions; they have produced a yacht that runs more smoothly, looks sleeker and showcases more features than ever before, while suiting precisely what the owner had in mind.

The New Zealand shipyard, McMullen & Wing, has certainly kept up with its country’s heritage of yachting. Their course in yacht building has progressed to accommodate each tendency of New Zealand culture. From innovative local boats, International Sailing Races and Regattas (One Ton Cup, Whitbread Round the World Race, America’s Cup), global exploring yachts, fishing crafts and superyacht refits, to world class luxury motor yachts. Located in Auckland, “The City of Sails”, McMullen & Wing builds yachts up to 164feet / 55 meters (up to present time) known for their reliability and longevity.

Chris McMullen and Eric Wing started building steel hull boats in 1969 at the present yard location on the banks of the Tamaki River in Auckland. The 1970’s was the era of a number of successful racing yacht builds for McMullen and Wing, including the Wai-Aniwa, winner of the 1972 One Ton Cup in Sydney, Australia.

New Zealand’s first ocean racing maxi yacht, Ceramco, was built in 1981 by McMullen & Wing for Peter Blake’s Whitbread Round the World Race attempt. Ceramco was one of many boat building projects undertaken by McMullen & Wing for Sir Peter Blake, including the modification of round the world sailing catamaran Enza and culminating in the victorious America’s Cup champion racers of 1995 with racing yacht Black Magic. In 1985, the company won the contract to build the first 3 composite-hulled 12-metre racing yachts for the 1987 America’s Cup Challenge.

In 1986 the company was purchased by two brothers, David and Terry Porter. The Porters expanded operations towards refits, the construction of Superyachts, large Sportfish vessels, and custom designed high performance inflatables (RIBs).

In 1987, New Zealand went all the way to the Louis Vuitton Finals – an outstanding debut for the world’s first fiberglass 39foot / 12meter yachts constructed at McMullen & Wing.

The famous the 171foot / 52meter three-masted schooner, Shenandoah, arrived in Auckland in 1994 to get a much needed full restoration by McMullen & Wing. Shenandoah won the award for best refit at the 1998 International Superyacht Society Awards.

In 1999, the 79foot / 24meter Day Money (now Big Easy) was the first of four sportfish yachts built by McMullen and Wing. Day Money was honored as a finalist in the International Superyacht Society awards in 2000 and the 79foot / 24meter Dreamin’ On (now Snowgoose) sportfisher was a finalist in the International Superyacht Society awards in 2001. The same year, McMullen & Wing built the 115foot / 35meter steel/aluminum expedition motor yacht Surprise, designed by Ward Setzer for Pacific cruising. Surprise won the International Superyacht Society award for best motor yacht in her length category.

The advanced composite yacht fisherman, Mea Culpa (131feet / 40meters), was launched in 2003 by McMullen & Wing. Executed to the highest standards in advanced composite materials to a design by Jack Sarin and Associates, Mea Culpa travelled the globe, fulfilling her owner’s dream of enjoying the abundance of the world’s greatest recreational fishing grounds with an active catch-and-release fishing program. The same year, the 115foot / 35meter performance aluminum sailing yacht Ipanema (designed by German Frers) won the Millennium Cup in superyacht regatta in Auckland only days after launching.In 2005, the 82foot / 25meter, 40+ knots water jet powered motor yacht Jariya (now called Elielle) was built by McMullen & Wing to a design by Michael Peters Yacht Design and interior design by J.C. Espinosa. Jariya won the International Superyacht Society Award for best motoryacht in her length range.

In 2006 McMullen & Wing began to design and build a line of production tenders. This launched yet another lofty addition to their diverse portfolio and the company is now well known to be the builder to see for custom tenders to match custom superyachts.

Built in 2007, the 121foot / 37meter ultra high-speed carbon fiber luxury motor yacht, Ermis 2 still remains one of the top ten fastest motor yachts ever built in the world, with a top speed of nearly 60 knots. Naval architecture and interior design was by Humphreys Yacht Design. Ermis 2 was honored by the International Superyacht Society as the best motor yacht in her length category.

The internationally acclaimed Big Fish (148foot / 45meter), a steel/aluminum luxury expedition motor yacht, was built in 2010. Big Fish received numerous prestigious awards, including the International Superyacht Society award for best motor yacht in her length category, Showboats International Design Award for Naval Architecture, World Yachts Trophy for Innovation, Asian Boating Award for Innovation and a judges’ special commendation for best yacht at the World Superyacht Awards.

2016 has seen McMullen & Wing’s largest yacht launched on their slipway – the 164foot / 50meter Y/N 1016 luxury expedition motor yacht.

McMullen & Wing is an advanced composite builder, an aluminum yacht builder and a steel ship builder, all wrapped into one. Their facilities are located on the banks of the Tamaki River in Auckland New Zealand with deep water access leading directly to Auckland’s Waitemata Harbor. With five construction halls in four separate buildings, plus full engineering, electrical and joinery workshops, design office and administration block, they have ample facilities to accommodate their projects.  As all facilities occupy the same site, communication flow remains simple and client visits can encompass the whole project within a time efficient schedule.

The shipyard has recently developed three new ranges of fully custom yachts between 44 and 58 meters. The FLOW Series is designed by Vripack and consists of two types, 144feet / 44meters and 167feet / 51meters. The Blade Series designed by H2 Yacht Design has three types 171feet / 52meters (5 cabins), 171feet / 52meters (6 cabins) and 190feet / 58meters. The Diamond Series, designed by Gregory C Marshall consists of the 131feet / 40meters, 148feet / 45meters, 164feet / 50meters and 180feet / 55meters yachts.

New zealand-based superyacht builder mcmullen & wing has released details of their 50m luxury expedition motor yacht chirundos (aka big star)..

CHIRUNDOS is also known as yard number 1016 and the successor of the 45m BIG FISH . that cruised over 60,000 nautical miles. The exterior and interior styling were created by Gregory C Marshall Naval Architects in cooperation with McMullen & Wing’s in-house design team.

“The lowered aft cockpit is a protected area for fishing and lounging, closely connected to the expansive aft deck whilst directly in touch with the water’s surface.  An extensive fleet of tenders and toys will provide for every activity.

The contemporary interior, also designed by Gregory C Marshall Naval Architects, will accommodate up to 12 guests in 5 cabins and will showcase natural materials in a relaxed modern ambiance.  Light, airy interior spaces flow seamlessly onto extensive decks on all levels.  Bulwark balconies allow the floor-to-ceiling glazed doors from the dining space to frame a spectacular vista, whilst also providing the ultimate sunbathing location, suspended over the water.  The breathtaking owners’ suite, on the bridge deck aft, opens onto its own private aft deck.  A symphony of light and space, the owners’ suite is a haven of calm and relaxation.”

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

CAPTAIN - Harry Fotopoulos Captain Harry is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy and holds a Captain Class A’ Diploma. He also holds a Canadian Commercial Pilot license class B, sailing and speedboat license. He has over 15 years of experience onboard many types of Charter Yachts. He holds Certificates in GMDSS, Fire Fighting & First Aid, Personal Safety, Life Saving, and Ship Security. He has a great knowledge of the Greek islands and will navigate guests to remarkable destinations. During his one season on board he showed great leadership skills and received positive feedback from all guests. He is calm yet very outgoing and speaks very good English. DECKHAND - Konstantinos Santas CHIEF STEWARDESS - Mirella Davint Mirella has 8+ years of experience as a stewardess onboard charter and private yachts. She has a very pleasant personality and she aims to accommodate her guests to the fullest. Comments received from previous guests are memorable. This will be Mirella’s eighth season onboard. Mirella speaks English and she is 38 years old. ENGINEER - Stelios Mandos Stelios holds an Engineer Class B’ Diploma from the Greek Merchant Marine Academy as well as a Sailor’s License. He has over 15 years of experience onboard Ocean-Going Vessels and Charter Yachts. His hobbies include spearfishing and sailing. He speaks good English. Stelios is 45 years old, married with two children. CHEF - Thanasis Kiritsis Thanasis is 39 years old and has worked as a chef for more than 20 years in numerous hotels restaurants, yachts and resorts including owning his own pastry shop / bakery for 5 years. Thanasis looks forward to welcoming his guests on board and introducing them to his culinary world. He speaks good English and Greek. He is a young chef full of energy, skills and passion towards his job. We are confident that he will serve his guests unforgettable flavors. ASSISTANT STEWARDESS - Anastasia Yurash Anastasia is 31 years old and has been in the yachting industry since 2021. Her working experience includes 7 years as a housekeeper and assistant stewardess. Anastasia speaks very good English. One of Anastasia’s strongest attributes is her appetite for work. She is also very sociable, welcoming and looks forward to having guests on board S/Y Amadeus. Her hobbies include Latin dancing, snowboard and yoga.

This sailing yacht's generous uncluttered teak deck with a foredeck pool, offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables, a bar and barbeque, a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. A General Description of Sailing Yacht AMADEUS

AMADEUS was previously registered as project/yacht name Amadeus 1er. This 33 metre (109 ft) luxury yacht was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1991. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS is a well proportioned superyacht. The yacht is a modern sloop with a cutter rig. The naval architecture office whom authored the design work on this ship was Philippe Briand. Luxury yacht AMADEUS is a quality yacht that is able to accommodate as many as 12 guests on board and has a total of 5 crew members.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS was built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard .The yacht features superb sailing characteristics which are complimented by her spacious interior and abundant deck space. Sailing sloop AMADEUS can accommodate 10 passengers in five cabins. With one large master stateroom and four additional cabins which are all air conditioned and have en suite bathrooms. She also has two separate salons and a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered with seating. The fore deck has an unique pool on deck and swimming in the sea is made accessible by a large swim aft platform.

The Construction & Naval Architecture relating to Luxury Yacht AMADEUS

Philippe Briand was the naval architect firm involved in the formal nautical design work for AMADEUS. Also the company Philippe Briand skillfully collaborated on this undertaking. In 1991 she was actually launched to triumph in Marans and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the yacht owner. Dynamique Yachts completed their new build sailing yacht in France. A reasonable proportion is brought about with a maximum beam (width) of 7.5 metres / 24.6 feet. With a 3.6m (11.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is reasonably deep. The material composite was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built with the use of composite. Over the deck of AMADEUS she is 32.7 (107.3 ft) in length. In 2004 extra refitting and modernisation was also finished.

Engines & Speed For S/Y AMADEUS:

She is driven by twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship gives 375 horse power (or 276 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined thrust for the boat is therefore 750 HP / 552 KW.

On board Superyacht AMADEUS She has The Following Guest Accommodation Format:

Bestowing bedding for a maximum of 12 yacht guests sleeping aboard, the AMADEUS accommodates them in style. Normally the vessel requires approximately 5 professional crewmembers to run.

Her master cabin features a walk around king bed, desk/vanity, and en-suite bathroom. Additionally, there are two guest cabins each with a queen bed convertible to two twins, and two guest cabins each with a queen bed and twin bed. Each guest cabin has an en-suite.

Her main salon has a spacious, contoured conversational area, along with a large, flatscreen T.V. The aft deck features al fresco dining with Bimini top. Up on deck there are sun pads and a splash pool for you and your guests to enjoy.

Watersports offered include a 15 foot tender with 75hp engine, water skis for adults and children, tube, wakeboard, kayak, fishing gear, snorkeling gear, and rendezvous diving.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS is a stunning 110 ft yacht available for charter in Greece. With a clean, spacious teak deck and a unique outdoor saloon that can seat up to 12 guests across two tables, it’s the perfect place for outdoor dining and entertainment. The deck saloon can also be enclosed with a special canopy and roll-up windows, making it suitable for use in all weather conditions. At the front of the boat, there’s a splash pool and sunbathing area with a removable awning for shade.

Inside the boat, a staircase from the cockpit leads to a well-lit and roomy saloon area with plenty of seating, including a formal dining area, bar, LCD TV, entertainment center, iPod dock station, and Playstation. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS can accommodate 10-12 guests in five large cabins, including a full-width master stateroom and two double cabins, each with an extra single bed. The two twin cabins can also be converted to doubles upon request, making her the only sailboat on the Greek market with five double beds.

To add to the fun, sailing yacht AMADEUS also comes with a range of water toys, including adult and children’s water skis, tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod, and snorkeling gear. She was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1996 and underwent a refit in 2014/2018.

ACCOMMODATION

Accomodation is offered for 10 -12 guests in 5 spacious cabins: Master cabin forward features a double bed, vanity unit and generous storage facilities, as well as audio/visual entertainment. The en-suite includess a large bath tub, shower and separate WC. Two identical double cabins with additional single bunks situated forward. Two identical double cabins situated aft which can be convertible to twins. (Total 5 double beds) All cabins with en suite facilities and audio/visual entertainment.

A professional crew of 5-6 members are accommodated in separate quarters.

Note that these specifications may vary slightly depending on the specific yacht’s configuration and modifications made by the owner.

Charter the AMADEUS

AMADEUS is a 110-foot sailing yacht that can accommodate ten to twelve passengers in five staterooms as follows: a spacious Owner’s stateroom with a double bed, a vanity and an entertainment unit including TV, DVD and music system; two cabins with a double bed and an additional single bed; two cabins with two twin beds each. All staterooms have en suite bathrooms, a TV, DVD and CD player. There are two separate salons onboard as well as a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered and has seating for all guests to dine in the open air. Forward of the cockpit is a lovely cushioned area for sunning and an unusual pool is found in the fore of the yacht. Swimming in the sea is made accessible by the large swim aft platform.

Robertson & Caine’s Leopard 45 is the boat which all other 45-foot catamarans are inevitably measured up against.  Renamed by Moorings as the Moorings 4500, this catamaran is destined to become their market leader in the mid-size boat range.

The Moorings 4500, designed by the famous naval architects, Simonis et Voogd Yacht Design, has a 4-cabin layout, each with its own private bathroom.

As there is also a small cabin in the fore peak on the port side, which can be used by a skipper, and the saloon can be converted into a double berth, this model can therefore host crews of up to 11!

Comfortable interior

Specially designed for cruising with your family or friends, the Moorings 4500 features several ground-breaking innovations, the most striking of which is perhaps the giant overhead skylight which radiates lights throughout the saloon.

The abundant natural light and choice of ultra-modern fittings combine to create an overall impression of luminosity and elegance.

When inside, you will be delighted to find you have access to a flat-screen TV / DVD-player, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports in all the cabins as well as the saloon, a fully-equipped galley and an air-conditioning system, all of which are powered by solar panels and a generator.

Last but not least, there will be no need to worry about water storage issues because the Moorings 4500 is one of the only charter boats to come equipped with a watermaker.

Outside arrangements

The outside arrangements are just as impressive, featuring a spacious aft cockpit and a raised lounge area where the crew can leisurely sip an aperitif together at the end of the day. The Moorings 4500 also has a cockpit at the fore: a trademark feature of Leopard catamarans, Moorings’ exclusive partner for more than 25 years now.

The outside styling has gradually evolved over the years. In the first models, the lines were generally rounded, nowadays they are much sleeker and sharper.  Also of note is the ultra-long skylight which runs the length of the roof, all the way from the aft to the forward cockpit, allowing daylight to flood down into the saloon.

All the lines come back into the raised helm station, fully equipped with electric winches which help ensure that manoeuvring is trouble-free. OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. Drone flying toward Moscow downed in Elektrostal

MOSCOW, November 19. A drone flying to Moscow has been downed by air defense systems in Elektrostal in the Moscow Region, no one was hurt, Moscow’s Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on Sunday.

"In the Elektrostal municipal district, air defense forces repelled an attack by a drone, which was flying toward Moscow. According to preliminary data, its fragments fell down incurring no damage. No one was hurt," he wrote on his Telegram channel .

According to the Moscow mayor, emergencies services are working on the site.
