8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Depending on the type of vessel and its intended use, different types of insurance may be required. This article will explore the types of insurance necessary to join a yacht club in the Philippines.

Liability coverage is the first type of insurance needed to join a yacht club in the Philippines. Liability coverage protects against bodily injuries or property damage caused by your boat while sailing at the yacht club. This includes any medical bills incurred should an accident occur and costs associated with damage to others’ property. Coverage should also include protection if legal action is taken against you due to the accident. Additionally, some clubs may require personal injury coverage for their members, which covers medical expenses and lost wages if you are injured while sailing at the club’s premises.

What Are The Safety Regulations For Sailing In The Philippines?

Sailing in the Philippines can be a thrilling experience, but it’s important to know and understand the safety regulations. With so many islands and unique coastlines, there are plenty of opportunities for travelers to explore the open waters.

Those who want to engage in sailing activities should first familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations set by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). The PCG is responsible for enforcing maritime safety and security laws, so they are an important resource for understanding what is expected of sailors.

The PCG requires that those operating a boat have a valid Maritime Safety Certificate, which outlines their qualifications as a mariner and permits them to operate their vessel safely. This certificate is only issued after one has passed both written and practical examinations. Other safety measures include having life jackets onboard for all passengers and filing a float plan before heading out on sailing trips. Sailors must also understand navigation rules, such as avoiding restricted areas or anchoring too close to shore.

At its core, sailing in the Philippines requires individuals to put safety first by being aware of the regulations set by the PCG and ensuring they have all necessary equipment onboard their boat before setting sail. With these precautions, travelers can explore some of the country’s most beautiful spots from a new perspective.

Are There Any Restrictions For Non-Members At Philippine Yacht Clubs?

Are there any restrictions for non-members at Philippine yacht clubs? This is an important question to consider if you plan to visit one of the many great yacht clubs in the Philippines. Generally speaking, non-members are allowed access to certain areas depending on the club’s policy. However, certain rules and regulations must be followed to ensure safety and security.

The most important thing for non-members to understand is that all guests must abide by the same safety regulations as members. This includes wearing appropriate attire, following all staff instructions, and respecting other members’ property. Additionally, some clubs may have specific policies regarding alcohol consumption or drug use. Inquiring about these rules before arriving at a particular yacht club is important.

Many yacht clubs also require non-members to sign a waiver before being allowed access to certain parts of their facilities. This waiver typically outlines the risks associated with sailing and other activities offered at the club and any additional safety measures that should be taken while on the premises. While this document may seem like a hassle, it is essential to keeping guests safe and secure while visiting a yacht club.

Lastly, it is worth mentioning that non-members may be required to pay a fee when accessing certain areas at a yacht club. This fee can vary depending on the services accessed or how long they plan to stay at the club. It’s always best practice to check with the front desk or management staff ahead of time to ensure you’re aware of all applicable fees before arriving at your destination.

Are There Any Age Restrictions For Sailing In The Philippines?

Knowing what age restrictions apply when sailing in the Philippines is important. Different yacht clubs vary in their regulations, and it’s important to be aware of any age limits that may be in place. Sailing is a popular activity in the Philippines , and knowing the rules can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

The legal age limit for sailing varies depending on the boat used. Generally speaking, children aged 16 or older can operate sailboats with an engine power of less than 5kW without supervision from an adult. For boats with an engine power greater than 5kW, supervision from an adult is required for anyone under 18 years old.

Different rules may apply depending on the yacht club’s regulations when sailing on larger boats, such as those used for offshore cruising or chartering. It is best to check with individual clubs regarding their specific requirements before setting out on a voyage.

Age restrictions should also be considered when dealing with safety-related matters at sea. Safety equipment, such as life jackets, should be sized appropriately, and all crew members should receive proper safety instructions before departure. To the West and North of the moorings are places to anchor in shallow water of 3-8 metres. Farther away and to the South you can enjoy more than 8 metres of water under the keel.

The Abanico Yacht Club features a rustic, over-the-water ambiance with an adequate food menu and cold drinks. Staff at the yacht club have contacts with transportation that will get you anywhere in Puerto Princesa you need to get to. The yacht club is open from around 08:00 to 21:00 daily.

There are no places to haul-out a keel boat in Puerto Princesa although catamarans may find places to beach. There is zero-tolerance to pollution and discharge from yachts.

Anchoring In Puerto Princesa

Around Puerto Princesa there are many inlets where you may anchor but there are some restricted areas. Best advice, hail the passing fisherfolk (of which there are many around sunrise & sunset) and ask them for direction - of all the places in the Philippines the fisherfolk in Puerto Princesa are demonstrably the friendliest.

Puerto Princesa Tourist Attractions

Puerto Princesa is known globally for the St. Paul's Underground River, located about 50Km by road from Puerto Princesa port. Puerto Princesa is less known as the starting point for scuba diving adventures to the famed Tubbataha Reef, in the Sulu Sea, half way between Palawan and the Southern Island of Mindanao.

Puerto Princesa may be your starting point also for adventure treks through the virgin forests that still occupy much of Palawan Island. The flora and fauna of Palawan are unique in the 21st century and are an exhibition of what much of the Philippine Islands used to look like before greed, rampant development, deforestation and mining became the scourge of the twentieth century.

Sailing northeast from Puerto Princesa you will eventually come to the hundred or so smaller islands that crown the top of Palawan with a kaleidoscope of white-sand beaches, crystal clear waters, limestone formations, bountiful corals and marine life and simply spectacular tropical island paradises.

There are some good restaurants in Puerto Princesa if you engage local knowledge, away from the ubiquitous food chains overflowing from the newly built malls.

Most of the nation's internationally connected banks have branches in Puerto Princesa, so obtaining cash is not much of a challenge.

Puerto Princesa Transport

Land transport around Puerto Princesa is provided by tricycle and jeep. Tricycles are the main transport in the City as most places are some way from wherever you are currently. Inexpensive and easily acquired, if a little cramped at times, these motorized transports enable easy access to everywhere you may wish to go around Puerto Princesa - about US$3 per hour with guide from the Abanico Yacht Club.

For greater distances, there are air-conditioned buses and jeeps that will take you to the North or South of Palawan Island.

There is a passenger ferry service between Puerto Princesa and Manila (stopping at Coron), a few times a week. The ferries are large, offer air-conditioned luxury and take vehicles as well as passengers.

There are local outrigger boats to take you to local places of interest, such as the fascinating sandbars at Snake Island.

The Puerto Princesa International Airport enables rapid access to the World for those who wish to leave their yacht here and fly to distant shores.

A Bangka will cost around 6 to 8,000 per day, a speedboat from Php20,000 and the cheapest catamaran from Php50,000 per day.

Yacht Charter in Philippines

Paradise by Horizon - Top rates for a Charter of a private Motor Yacht in Philippines

Philippines yacht rental

When it comes to Southeast Asia, among the best islands and beaches in the world are found in the Philippines. An archipelago on the Pacific Ocean featuring 7,100 islands, the country is merely waiting for yacht charters to explore its undeniably beautiful tropical islands. The Philippines is not quite yet a prime yachting destination due to the lack of marinas and mooring facilities. Still, the country is part of the emerging Southeast Asia yachting scene with most popular islands opening up for yacht rentals. A relatively undiscovered among yachting enthusiasts, you'd be surprised by the abundance of incredible natural beauty, calm seas, and plenty of safe anchorages to be found in the Philippines.

How much to rent a yacht in the Philippines?

Yacht rental in the Philippines can bring you to many different islands in one day or over the course of multiple days, depending on your itinerary. A 62-foot catamaran is perfect for short distances within the islands, costing around $24,000 for a week's rent for ten people on board. A 214-foot sailing yacht, which is perfect to cruise along the Pacific coast or the South China Sea, can be rented for about $140,000 for a week's charter. A 198-foot motor yacht, on the other hand, is the best vessel for a liveaboard along the islands. It would cost you about $258,000 per week to rent this yacht in the Philippines, which can accommodate 30 people on board.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in the Philippines?

With over 7,000 islands to explore, there are so many destinations to choose from in the Philippines. However, only a few islands offer mooring facilities, as well as safe anchorages for yacht rentals. The most popular yachting destinations in the Philippines are the islands of Palawan, Cebu, and Romblon. The most popular among these spots is Palawan, named by Travel+Leisure magazine as the "Best Island in the World," in 2020. The group of islands also received this recognition in 2013, 2016, and 2017.

What makes Palawan such a beautiful destination is its relatively untouched natural beauty. With so many islands in this region, you can discover secret dive spots, hidden beaches, and plenty of natural beauty with very few people around. The islands of El Nido and Coron are the most popular destinations for Philippines yacht rental. El Nido is known for its powdery-white beaches and Bacuit Bay islands, which offer plenty of opportunities for water adventures. In Coron, the Kayangan Lake, with its crystalline freshwater and towering limestone cliffs, is a sight to behold. Coron also features shipwrecks and other nearby uninhabited islands with secret beaches and coves.

Romblon, known as the Philippines' marble capital, is another famous destination for yacht rental in the Philippines with safe moorings and anchorages. The Romblon Harbor is a typhoon shelter and popular with yacht enthusiasts. Nearby islands for charters to explore include Banton, Tablas, and Sibuyan, called "The Galapagos of Asia." A cruise around Romblon can also bring you to the famed Boracay Island, found further down the south of Romblon, known for its 7km white sand beach and lively nightlife.

Found in the middle of the archipelago, Cebu island is the perfect jumping-off point to the nearby islands located in this region. With a yacht club in Mactan Island, this Philippines yacht rentals are available to take you island hopping around the waters, but also to further away islands such as Malapascua to the north, known for thresher shark diving, as well as the beautiful and quiet island of Bantayan, with perfect white sand beaches on the coast.

Bohol Island, known for the famed Chocolate Hills, the tarsier (the smallest primate in the world), and Panglao Island's white-sand beaches, is only a 2-hour cruise from Mactan Island of Cebu. If you would like to go further, the islands of Siquijor and Camiguin are also within a few hours cruise away, among the best of Philippines' yacht rental itineraries.

Where to go on a luxury yacht rental in the Philippines?

As mentioned, there aren't many marinas in the archipelago yet, so luxury yacht rental in the Philippines is limited to cosmopolitan cities, such as Manila, the capital, Cebu, and Davao. In Manila, several yacht clubs offer luxury yacht rentals on the Manila Bay, Subic Bay, and Puerto Galera. Luxury yacht rental typically includes a sunset cruise on the Manila Bay and cruising to popular beach spots. In Cebu, the Cebu Yacht Club offers berths for yacht owners, with a marina complete with restaurants and shops.

Samal Island, located in Davao City, to the south of the Philippines, features the Holiday Oceanview Marina, which can accommodate 60 berths, where yachts coming from Australia and Indonesia frequently have their first taste of the Philippines. Samal Island, a beautiful island with white sand beaches, mangrove forests, and the famous Monfort Bat Cave ( a Guinness World Record holder for the biggest colony of fruit bats in one cave), is found here.

The Philippines is rich with natural beauty, perfect ideal weather for cruising, and thousands of islands are just waiting for you to explore. A yacht rental holiday in this relatively undiscovered yachting destination will surely make memories of a lifetime.

Guide is good and friendly. He took us photos as well, View is fabulous, cave is maintained and reserved like wow, Only thing is a batch went for zip lining and took 2hrs to return which is a bit more. It’s a shared tour they can go but time limit has to be there for that, 2hrs made others all very uncomfortable.

Canyoneering and whale shark were excellent choices to make for us!!! We’ve loved!!! Tumalog falls wasn’t interesting. Guides were very good and they give us towels to after trip to use. Everything was very organized.

Unfortunately, we got bad weather and the coast guard almost cancelled this trip due to high winds. We were able to go to the virgin island and go snorkeling in Balicasag. Which was amazing. So many wildlife there and we even saw a sea turtle. We were also offered to go scuba diving while on the island but thankfully we didn't go for it as the weather was apparently getting worse to the point where the coast guard might have prevented us from heading back. Thankfully the crew that took us was keeping tabs on that to make sure that didn't happen.

Dan Firks

The trip was cancelled and no body got back to me on a reschedule, I asked, they said they would be back to me and I was left high & dry. Thumbs down!

Among these 3, AirAsia and Cebu Pacific usually offer the cheapest flight. A one-way ticket costs around PHP 3,000 (around $60). If you don’t want to take the hassle of land traveling for 5-6 hours or if you don’t have any business in Puerto Princesa, then you can take a direct flight to El Nido. However, please keep in mind that the flight ticket in this route is more expensive.
