Waypoints Yacht Charters expands to St. Thomas with acquisition of CYOA

Waypoints Yacht Charters has acquired CYOA Yacht Charters, a Virgin Islands charter company with nearly 40 years of operations, and will take over its Frenchtown, St. Thomas base, the company announced.

This latest acquisition follows Waypoints Yacht Charters’ recent opening of its British Virgin Islands base location in November 2021, located in Nanny Cay on Tortola. Earlier in 2021, the company also acquired Sailing Florida Charters & Sailing School, operating in St. Petersburg, Florida out of the Vinoy Marina. These locations joined the existing Waypoints Yacht Charters Annapolis base.

With the addition of a St. Thomas base, charter guests and yacht owners can enjoy easy access and direct flights from many U.S. cities, a central location for chartering throughout the U.S., British and Spanish Virgin Islands, with the modern conveniences and infrastructure of a U.S. territory.

Waypoints Yacht Charters has continued to expand in the charter industry by offering personalized boutique-level service. The yachts available for charter at each Waypoints Yacht Charters location are new-model, privately-owned sailing catamarans, sailing monohulls, power catamarans and powerboats.

Kirstie Palmer, president and partner at Waypoints Yacht Charters, took over in May 2021 and has overseen the company’s continued expansion.

We rented Apres Ski for Thanksgiving week and had a wonderful experience and time! The staff was very friendly and helpful. The boat had a few issues, but nothing that we couldn’t deal with. The ice maker and water maker was amazing and now don’t want a boat without them.

We just finished a bareboat charter with Waypoints and they continue to be the best! Their staff and boats are amazing! I highly recommend them!

Top to bottom this was a great company to deal with for our bareboat charter. Everyone was helpful and great to work with, quality boats kept in great shape. I highly recommend waypoints and look forward to chartering with them again.

Thank you for a wonderful week of sailing. The USVI base crew was so helpful...not only with the yacht (which was in 5 star condition), but also with provisioning, amenities, and local sailing knowledge. Can't wait to go back!

We had the best vacation chartering out of CYOA. Starting with the quick 10 min. ride from the airport to the marina. They have an extremely attentive team that takes care of all the details. We were set up with the perfect Captain, Tabatha, to get us comfortable with boat. Our boat was spotless and all the others look to be extremely well taken care of. The Lucia 40 was a great size and easy to handle boat for our family. We can't wait to plan our next trip! Thank you.

Since TA does not yet support Yacht Rental Companies, I am posting this review of CYOA Yacht Charters in Frenchtown here.

Summary: moments of good service overwhelmed by intentional time wasting, poor attitudes, and poor facilities.

My wife and I arrived a day early to scope out everything for an eight day sail with my father and stepmother. Upon speaking with the desk agent to see what we needed, she advised we should check in at about 9:30 in the morning the next day, which was fine.

The next morning, we checked in at about 9:45 a.m. to find the boat would not be ready for a couple of hours?!? We asked if we could take a look at the boat to gauge the storage onboard before we went shopping. We were given a resounding no and a voice from the cubicle (the owner?) said we would not be able to get our departure briefing until 1 p.m.

We decided to just go out and start our provisioning without seeing the boat and once we acquired the provisions, we returned and were allowed at first to store the dry provisions at the end of the dock, then allowed to board the boat and begin storing the gear and provisions at about 11:30 a.m.

We were given an inventory sheet to do before our briefing, diverting two of us from stowing gear to check to see if CYOA had done their job and were told if we had not completed the inventory by the time the guy doing the departure briefing arrived, they would postpone the briefing. Please bear in mind this is the first time my father and stepmother, in 17 years of sailing in the Virgin Islands, have ever had to complete their own inventory or been threatened with delay if they did not complete the charter company's work by a certain time.

A note on the boat: we sailed on a FP Mahe 36, which was a decent boat, but had issues with ventilation (especially the port berth) and the main sail was a royal pain in the butt.

We were restricted from entering Cruz Bay on St. John by the charter company and instructed in both our departure briefing and in the literature aboard the boat to moor in either Lind Point or Caneel Bay and dinghy to Cruz Bay to clear US Customs/Immigration upon returning to US waters. We chose to moor at Lind Point and literally within 10 minutes we were rocked by the wake of a ferry which knocked one of our crew off her feet and down the steps from the galley. When we registered a comment with the charter company, they said no one from their company ever said we should moor at Lind Point.

Upon returning to St. Thomas, we notified the company when we would be back and they knew to expect us. We still had to wait upon arrival at their dock and the check out procedure took an hour and half, another first for my father and stepmother.

In short, it is worth your money and time to rent elsewhere.

Well, we completed our charter with CYOA and it went okay. Whew! Tom, who checked us out on the boat was very nice and very thorough. I understand the concern when turning over a half million dollar boat to people of unknown sailing, motoring experience. He was very helpful.

Unfortunately, my complaint is not with CYOA, but with the boat we chartered, a 47' Fountaine Pajot catamaran, the Island, to be specific. While the boat is very well laid out above deck, our complaint was with the cabins. I am not sure if it was unique to our boat, or if it is a problem with the brand, but sleeping in the aft cabins was problematic. If there was the least bit of wave or wind action at night, the boat creaked and moaned as if it was torquing all night long. The sound was magnified as the hull acted as a drum to amplify the sound. Impossible to sleep. In dead calm it was fine, of course. The other aft cabin has the additional misfortune of being located directly next to the generator, so, if you want air conditioning at night, the sound of the running generator is amplified by the drum effects of the aft cabin. Ears were still ringing by those occupants a week after disembarking. We were all physically exhausted from our inability to sleep for 10 days!

You are required to sign an inventory sheet prior to departure for even the most minute of items, items for which you have no idea if they are on the boat or not. One thing that was missing was a can opener. While not a major event if you have a church key and a screw driver, it certainly would be nice to have one...a good one...for those of us who actually prepare meals on board.

So, I guess the point of this review is that it is important to know the boat you will be chartering. For my experience, I will never again charter a Fountaine Pajot. As for CYOA, no complaints.

1) Nah, not bitter. I just get pissy with folks who can't leave it at , "I had a good experience with CYOA" but instead decide to question the motives/experience of some one whom does post their complaints, especially in a passive/aggressive manner.

2) Unfortunately, I have not been down to the Islands since 2011. My father and step-mother, who are the real sailors, have simply gotten too old to sail anymore. Previous to that, they spent at least 10-15 days each year in BVI sailing with various companies. I accompanied them on a couple trips. Before you shout, "A HA!" at the top of your lungs, I ran this review by my father, who is not on TA, and he agreed with everything I had to say and that, based on their considerable experience sailing in the Islands, these were legit gripes.

We have used CYOA twice We found everyone most helpful. Jay and Richard provided good tips for our itinerary.

I've been sailing for 43 years and Chartering in the Virgins for the last 15. Our Charter with CYOA in Feb 2014..Mahe 36 Azzurra, was relaxing , last one in the cab, first ones out from the Airport with no rush to the ferry to make the last run through Customs in the BVI . I found the interactions with everyone at the base professional, congenial, relaxing, and extremely helpful. We always schedule a sleep-aboard so we can unpack and scope out the boat the night before we leave. Having restaurants and a deil within a block of the base makes the first night nice and easy. The most thorough boat checkout I'd ever been through was done professionally and pleasantly and worth every minute. The inventory list checkoff is a great way to locate repair items aboard before they may be needed. The boat was clean, well outfitted and was a pleasure to sail, maneuver and "live " aboard. We liked the experience so well we're coming back , starting with a sleep - aboard early March 2015 (^_^)

Just returned from a 1 week charter on Lipari 41 "Days Like This". Arrived STT Saturday, 2/28/15 @ 1230pm. CYOA had a driver waiting for us (very nice touch!) so we didn't have to wait for a van to fill up - we had it to ourselves. Arrived at the dock 10 mins later. Staff was ready and waiting for us. Boat was clean and AC turned on. Gourmet Gallery delivered provisions - they're a bit pricey, but if you want delivery instead of shopping at Pueblo, they're a great choice. Nancy, Richard, and Marsha - all great - thanks for your efforts and attention on our first day and getting us off the dock. The boat was relatively new and all equipment was in working order. After the charter, checking back in was as easy as checking out. Have seen a few negative reviews about CYOA, but our experience was as good as it gets. We've chartered with BVI companies on 7 other occasions - CYOA's service topped them all. Whatever problems they may have had in the past seem to be behind them. I'd definitely do business with CYOA again.

Doing inventory, imo, protects the person chartering the boat from incurring costs for items not onboard when returning to the dock. We rent a houseboat every fall with five other couples, and the marina has us do an inventory check upon boarding. Sad in the morning to try to make breakfast with no skillet.....

I can handle a lot of issues but this will be my wife's first trip on a charter. If this turns out bad I doubt if she will ever do it again.

I normal take reviews with a grain of salt but there appears to be a theme in all the bad reviews.

I would appreciate any addition comments to help me choose.

I am considering st Thomas for the first time to save on the airfare but if necessary I'll just go to Tortola.

Waypoints Yacht Charters has acquired Virgin Islands charter company CYOA Yacht Charters and will take over its Frenchtown, St. Thomas base.

With the addition of a St. Thomas base, charter guests and yacht owners will be able to benefit from direct flights from many US cities, a central location for chartering throughout the Virgin Islands, with the modern conveniences and infrastructure of a US territory.

This latest acquisition follows Waypoints Yacht Charters ’ recent opening of its British Virgin Islands base location in November 2021, located in the heart of Nanny Cay on Tortola. Earlier in 2021, the company also acquired Sailing Florida Charters & Sailing School, an established charter company operating in St. Petersburg, Florida, at Vinoy Marina. These locations joined the existing Waypoints Yacht Charters Annapolis base.

The yachts available for charter at each Waypoints’ location are new-model, privately-owned sailing catamarans, sailing monohulls, power catamarans, and powerboats from leading manufacturers such as Fountaine Pajot and Dufour.

Virgin Islands Yacht Charters directly manages the charter fleet.  We are not a broker.  We do work with many reputable and trustworthy charter brokers who regularly book our boats and are familiar with our procedures and knowledgeable of the local cruising grounds.  At the same time, there are many brokers out there who know absolutely nothing about our fleet OR even the Virgin Islands themselves.  Please be aware. 

Catamarans are wonderfully spacious and provide ample area for moving around.  Whether it is in the cockpit or salon which spans over both hulls allowing for a larger area inside, the foredeck with the trampoline  for sun-tanning, or the great lounging area on the top deck you will enjoy the variety of ways to spend your day on the water.  Cats are much more stable than their counterparts which can be much better for new or inexperienced sailors who haven't quite found their sea legs yet or those who are prone to seasickness.   Two engines allow for greater maneuverability when in a marina or picking up mooring balls and thus, have gained popularity in recent years.  And, you will love the panoramic views!

USVI Base Information

Base location & hours.

Base Address 3562 Honduras #4 Frenchtown Marina St. Thomas, VI 00802-5741

Office Hours 8:00am – 5:00pm

Embarkation Time

Boarding time is at noon on the first day of your charter. If you have a sleep aboard selected, boarding time is at 4:00 p.m.

Yacht Briefing

Make sure to stop in our office and we will take care of any final paperwork or answer questions prior to your charter. You are required to complete your online briefing prior to arrival at our base. We will conduct a review and chart briefing after you arrive.

Disembarkation Time

All charters end at noon. Please allow enough time to fuel the boat, return to the dock and disembark the vessel before noon. If you wish to return to the marina the night before departure, please schedule that with the team at the base.

How To Get Here

Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) – St. Thomas, USVI

Waypoints USVI is located at Frenchtown Marina in St. Thomas, just a 10 minute cab ride from the airport to our base. You can reserve a private cab online prior to arrival in our reservations system. If you need any advice with regards to travel arrangements, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Weather Forecasting

We recommend Weather Underground or Windfinder for weather forecasts.

The weather year-round in the USVI is beautiful, but brief showers and thunderstorms do occur, but are quite rare. The sun, of course, shines all year round. 

All guests should listen to the marine weather on a daily basis. There is a page in the vessel operations or general info manual that lists the broadcast radio weather source. In the unlikely event that a hurricane or tropical storm is forecast, please contact our office for instructions. If it appears that the Virgin Islands will experience a severe weather event, we will instruct you where to leave the boat and where to seek shelter.
