' src=

Those in the New Jersey area have several boat club options to get out on the water.

With a variety of choices, you should know the differences in the different clubs before you decide on which one to join.

Let’s dive into the options you have!

New Jersey Boating Made Simple

New Jersey is a place of adventure when it comes to boating. There are 127 miles of coastline and hundreds of miles of bay-shore. Beyond that, there are inland lakes and tributaries. Most of the state’s counties, 17 out of 21, border saltwater.

The state makes it pretty easy to get boater safety education, certifications and meet other requirements.

You can obtain a boating license through an online course and there is a wealth of educational courses available online that meet New Jersey state requirements. The states boating laws are also online, as well as applications to waive certain boating restrictions and to hold a marine event.

If you become a boating club member, the club will have all this information for you as well. Most, if not all, hold safety courses and assist in getting a boating license. They host boating events and do all the applications for those events, so you have little to do in preparation other than show up and register.

Boat clubs are a great way to enjoy the sport without all the responsibility of owning a boat. It saves people money and time because everything is there.

There are at least six in New Jersey to look at when considering possible boat clubs.

Freedom Boat Club

Freedom Boat Club was established in 1989 in South Jersey, making it one of the nation’s oldest and largest boat club.  This club has 175 locations in 31 states, Canada and Europe. It has 2000 boats in its national fleet and has more than 20,000 members.

The first advantage of going with this boat club members have access to all locations in the United States and Canada. Its fleet includes a large selection of clean and new boats.

That includes:

  • Pontoon boats
  • Both inshore and offshore center console fishing boats

There is a simple online reservations system and this club offers free unlimited training and unlimited access to the entire fleet. There are no extra charges for using different types of boats.

In South Jersey, the club is located at Harbour Cove Marina in Somers Park. Water access is to the Great Egg Inlet and the mid-Atlanta. There is a restaurant and a state-of-the-art waterfront complex.

Members must be at least 21-years-old, but the club will provide you with boater education and safety courses for free if you do not have a boating license or boating experience.

The South River Boat Club

The South River Boat Club, established in 1958, is a smaller club in South River, NJ., with around 68 members. Some of the members have been with the club for more than 45 years. This is a working club, so members participate with boat maintenance and property upkeep.

The distinguishing fact of this club is the number of coordinated events it has for its members. There are special dining nights, like Italian night, parties, picnics, dances and tournaments. These activities go on throughout the year, even outside the boating season.

This is the right club for those seeking to make new connections and friends.

The club is proud to be a family-friendly club. It has a waterfront clubhouse with a full-service bar and a boat launch ramp. It also offers a low membership free since it is a working club.

Carefree Boat Club

In Avalon, NJ, the Carefree Boat Club has a couple of features over other clubs.

This new club has plenty of valet dock staff so you aren’t spending time looking for assistance. This club will have your boat ready when you arrive at the marina. Staff helps with gear, loads it on the boat and helps with cast-off. They also help you unload when you return and clean the boat.

At this club, members can use the boats as much as they want without paying additional feeds. There is an online reservation system and the member-to-boat rations are low, so you can make a spur-of-the-moment reservation or even make a walk-on reservation.

Boat varieties include:

This club has 75 locations across America and the British Virgin Isles and access are included in the membership. Members get free, unlimited training from full-time staff.

The club is new to social events, but are planning a calendar of events.

Monmouth Boat Club

Monmouth Boat Club is a historic club based on the Navesink River in downtown Red Bank. Founded in 1879, it is a well-known club that offers boats and amenities for both large and small boaters including rowers, kayakers, and paddleboarders.

This is a working club, where members maintain boats and property, and that makes membership and boat space more affordable than most clubs.

It focuses on sailing, so if you like to sail, this is the club to join.

This club has an extensive sailing education available for both adults and youth. Non-members are allowed to participate in the junior sailor program. There are also many competitive racing programs for member participation.

This club has monthly social events throughout the year including parties, wine tastings, and regattas.

National Park Boat Club

The National Park Boat Club is located in National Park, NJ. It is a nonprofit club with the mission to promote social activities, friendships, and opportunities for boating and other outdoor recreation activities.

If you are looking to contribute to the community as well as enjoy boating, this is the club for you.

This club is involved in local charities such as sponsoring local needy families at Christmas through the National Park school system. It also donated money to local groups such as the fire department, the police department, local ACA teams, graduation bonds for local schools and the American Cancer Society.

However, it is tougher to become a member of the National Park Boat Club.

There are 115 members, plus its life members. All applicants must be sponsored by another member. Other requirements include they must be at least 21 years old, of good character and have an interest in safe boating as well as other types of outdoor recreation and club functions.

Additionally, applicants serve 12-month probation before they are elected to full membership.

New Jersey Dragon Boat Club

The New Jersey Dragon Boat Club, located in Parsippany, NJ,   is the state’s first dragon boat club. It was founded in 1999 and promotes boating with events, clinics, consulting and volunteering.

Unlike other clubs, this is a paddle club with teams and races. Anyone, even those without experience can join, but you must complete a paddler agreement, sign an individual waiver and pay the fee. Fees are $125 for adults and $25 for youth and college students.

The unique aspect of this club is that you can pay $10 each practice as a non-member until you decide whether you want to join. Also, non-members can join in on team activities with fees ranging from $5 to $20 a day.

There are four teams in this club. Two are for women and two are co-ed crews One is specifically for those new to the club.

What to Ask Before Joining a Boat Club

best yacht clubs in new jersey

There are some things you need to know before you decide which club to join.

Some questions to ask include:

  • What all does my fee include?
  • Do I need additional insurance or boating insurance?
  • Will I need to get a boating license?
  • What is involved in your training and safety programs?
  • Will I be expected to volunteer at the club?
  • Do you have family activities for children?
  • What are the regulations on gas refills for the boats?
  • What are the rules for turning in the boats at the end of the day?

Getting all the answers upfront will make a big difference in where you decide to drop anchor.

One key factor is finding out if you can bring guests or children out on the boat. You also need to find out what insurance is required to bring others on a boat.

Be sure to read membership agreements carefully, especially when it comes to additional fees or liability.

You will also want to ask about their maintenance policies on their boats. Most clubs are great at maintaining their fleet, but you should know how often routine maintenance is done and what type of performance to expect. Also, ask about procedures if the boat has mechanical issues on the water.

It is important to know who to call for a tow back to shore.

One of the most important factors is whether you like those in the club. It is a good idea, if possible, to attend a couple of social functions to see if you enjoy being around other members before you decide to join the club.

A yacht club’s location can affect its accessibility, views, and sailing conditions. Look for a club that is close to your home or marina, has a scenic waterfront, and provides easy access to the open sea or nearby waterways.

Top Spas in NJ

Luxury hotels in nj, brunch in nj, yachting the jersey coast.

Summer memories are best made on the ocean, and a good yacht is how you get there. New Jersey boasts 130 miles of popular Atlantic coastline. From the luxurious marinas overlooking Manhattan to the Victorian charm of Cape May’s boat docks, New Jersey offers hundreds of destinations where you can deboard and sit back to a plate of crab legs and a glass of Riesling. Add in New Jersey’s eclectic local music scene, and you’ll see how the Garden State affords a wealth of opportunities to make the most of your summer yachting.

Here’s where you can find the best places in New Jersey to dock your sportfish, cruiser or mega yacht.

Jersey

Monmouth County:

Navesink Marina If live music is what you’re looking for, get ashore at the Navesink Marina . Their own Eventide Grille is an excellent spot to enjoy lighter fare, refreshing drinks and live local bands under the setting sun. Here, boating accommodations range from short-term slips to rack and cradle storage for the off-season.

The Channel   Club Marina The Channel Club Marina offers 30 to 100-foot slips and complimentary shuttle services to local destinations. However, once you dock at The Channel Club, you might not want to leave. Much more than a place to fuel up, The Channel Club in Monmouth Beach boasts its own ambitious, dockside restaurant, plus a tiki bar, dock attendants and a housekeeping service.

Belmar Marina With transient docks up to 150 feet, there’s no better place to dock in Belmar . Even if you don’t own a boat, there’s plenty of charter and party boats available at the discretion of their owners. The marina is also located just steps away from the 9th Ave. Pier Bar & Restaurant and the Marina Grille, which both feature live music and specialty cocktails.

The Molly   Pitcher Inn One of the few places on our list that offers lodging, The Molly Pitcher Inn is a paradise in the heart of Red Bank. Take a break from sleeping on the tide and check yourself into the promenade or garden   suite. When you’re ready to explore the ever-walkable streets of Red Bank, be sure to visit the upscale Italian restaurant, Pazzo, before catching a show at The Downtown’s beachfront venue.

Ocean County:

Pier 281 If you’re cruising the coast in a larger vessel, keep Pier 281 on your map. With deep waters and customizable slips capable of accepting yachts over 75 feet, this could be your best chance to dock before Atlantic City. Plus, located just ashore is Reel’s Restaurant, a quiet, elegant BYOB offering a full range of seafood fare.

The Marina at Southwinds Four miles from Tice’s Shoal and the annual Floatchella, the Marina at Southwinds offers slips up to 58 feet and is home to an on-site 50,000- lb. travel lift. You can also treat yourself to a full sushi menu and live entertainment at the River House next door. Ask about their dock-and-dine offers.

Beach Haven   Yacht Club Beach Haven is a small, exquisite community featuring art walks, food festivals and pristine beaches. The Beach Haven Yacht Club parallels the neighborhood’s discerning tastes. The yacht club and its marina offer slips up to 70 feet, uniformed attendants and beach passes for transient boaters. If you’re stopping by, don’t miss Parker’s Garage & Oyster Saloon and the Engleside Inn.

Atlantic County:

Senator Frank S. Farley State Marina This huge state marina , with over 600 slips and accommodations for vessels up to 300 feet in length, is right at the foot of the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino. Enjoy the opulence of marble baths, Sobel Westex bedding and exquisite dining, or dive into the nightlife and entertainment of the East Coast’s finest casino.

Wonder Bar Voted “Best Outdoor Bar” in the Atlantic City Nightlife Awards, this restaurant, bar and grill hosts a seafood festival, beach concerts and live music on the weekends. Stay late — they have a happy hour until 6 a.m. or spend the afternoon along the Atlantic City boardwalk, just a few blocks from Wonder Bar .

Seaview Harbor Marina Located in Long Port, just south of Atlantic City, Seaview Harbor can accommodate yachts up to 125 feet. For dining, help yourself to a continental breakfast served on the second floor of their clubhouse, or visit the chic Caffé Luciano Lamberti for a pasta positano overflowing with jumbo lump crabmeat. You can also spend the day on Seaview Harbor’s sprawling, private bayside beach.

Tavern on the   Bay Resort Situated in a fully renovated Victorian mansion, this resort offers slips for yachts up to   70 feet and a quiet night’s   sleep in a romantic room. While miles away from the bright noise of Atlantic City, you can still enjoy one of the region’s best steakhouses and catch a show at one of the many bayside venues in   historic Somers Point.

Cape May County:

The Reeds at   Shelter Haven When it comes to coastal pampering, few places do it better than The Reeds at Shelter Haven , an exclusive hotel and spa with excellent dining options on-site. Let their beach butler service chauffeur you to Stone Harbor’s pristine beaches, and on the way back, don’t forget to browse Stone Harbor’s art galleries, boutiques and cafés.

Schooner’s   Island Marina With slips up to 110 feet, this marina will place you in the center of beautiful Wildwood, New Jersey. For a romantic bayside evening on a candle-lit deck, head next door to the Beach Creek Oyster Bar for great cuisine, cocktails and nightly entertainment. Schooner’s also hosts adults-only dance parties and fishing tournaments, so be sure to ask what events are taking place.

Two Mile Landing This marina boasts two restaurants with 500 feet of waterfront dining. Enjoy live music and fish buckets at The Crab House, or sit down to upscale dining at 2 Mile . Wherever you choose, you’re not going to want to miss out on the great live entertainment.

Canyon Club Marina Surrounded by beautiful waterfront homes, the   Canyon Club Marina is a half-mile from the Victorian villages of Cape May. The Canyon Club’s central   position in Cape May Harbor means this marina offers easy access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware River. The Canyon Club is renowned for several fishing tournaments it hosts each year, in case you’re ready to cast your lines in hope of hooking a blue marlin.

The Yacht Club Offers Waterfront Dining in Edgewater

yacht club entrance

A new seafood restaurant and bar is open in Edgewater, offering casual dining in a relaxing atmosphere. It’s hard to miss The Yacht Club along the Edgewater Commons Shopping Center pier, with its white lighthouse-shaped façade. In terms of location, locals will recall the space previously housing Joe’s Crab Shack.

However, the 13,000-square foot interior is now totally different. It seats 120 in the main dining room; which boasts olive green walls, Greece-imported gold accented furniture, and floor-to-ceiling windows. In addition, the dining room overlooks a deck with water views from all sides. Meanwhile, the private upstairs dining room at The Yacht Club seats 150. Finally, their marble bar can seat another 20, while their lounge with a view seats yet another 30.

The Yacht Club is All About Dinner With a View

But we haven’t even gotten to the outdoor deck yet; this section seats 60 – rain or shine — and offers views of both the Hudson River and Manhattan. “The outdoor setting was designed to resemble a waterfront bar in Europe, from the island-chic light fixtures to the sliding floor to ceiling doors which easily open and close weather permitting,” says The Yacht Club Owner Eliana Stefanitsis; her family also runs the Hudson River Group, which owns Molos in Weehawken .

Like many other businesses, COVID-19 caused a delay in operation. Eliana’s original plan was to open The Yacht Club in April, but wound up waiting until August instead. “We aren’t taking reservations because we want to encourage people to come eat, enjoy the space, and not have to plan in advance,” she says. Likewise, their plan is to accommodate both “people who want to hang out at the bar and enjoy a craft cocktail or families who want to go out to eat.”

Seafood by the Sea

The Yacht Club serves American seafood dishes, courtesy of Executive Chef Gregory Zapantis. (Fans of the Hudson River Group will recognize that name from Molos.) To further diversify the menu, the restaurant also employs Sushi Chef Steve Song (previously from Masa in New York City).

As for their signature dishes, The Yacht Club specializes in lobster. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that lobster rolls and the lobster BLT sandwich are big hits. Of course, you can also find salads, tacos, and burgers on the menu. Meanwhile, the full bar menu includes frozen drinks. Their signature cocktail is the Grapefruit Botanical Spritz, with Ketel One grapefruit juice, Aperol liqueur, and club soda.

They also offer gluten-free items such as wild salmon and skirt steak. Eliana points out that vegetarian items are limited for the moment, but they plan to expand on this soon. For now, they can accommodate vegetarian meals by request.

You can visit The Yacht Club at 541 River Rd in Edgewater. For hours, their full menu, and other details, search for The Yacht Club online.
