A Sydney Harbour bareboat charter is one of those experiences that will stay with you long after you’ve set sail for home and what better playground than Sydney Harbour and its surrounds? The best way to explore everything that Sydney harbour has to offer is to take control and do it on your own terms and in your own time. Be your own captain on your Sydney bareboat charter for a day or longer and set sail to wherever the wind takes you.

A Sydney bareboat charter is something you should experience any time of the year. In summer, a north-easterly sea breeze whips up on the harbour every afternoon providing some of the best boating conditions. Your Sydney bareboat charter will not only provide you with an exhilarating experience but Sydney’s sunsets will leave a long lasting impression on you and those close to you. Come wintertime, that north-easterly turns into a south-south westerly and the flat harbour, stiff breeze and less harbour traffic provide you with ideal conditions for you to hoist your sails and sail free.

On your Sydney bareboat charter you are the captain. If you are after something is a little more laid back, then the ideal place for you to sit back, relax and soak in the Sydney skyline is Athol Bay. Set on the western side of Bradleys Head, Athol Bay is the perfect Sydney bareboat charter choice. Nestled in just below Taronga Zoo, and with a magnificent cityscape view, you can set anchor while the family enjoys a bit of swimming, surfing, and fishing or just recline and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Athol Bay is one of many beaches that your Sydney bareboat charter can take you on. Offering a breathtaking view of Sydney, Milk beach is one of the eastern suburb’s best-kept secrets. Situated at the base of Hermit Bay and within the Sydney Harbour National Park, Milk beach is one of those isolated locations that a dreamy Sydney bareboat charter is all about.

Just around the corner from Milk beach is the world famous Watsons Bay.  With destinations such as Doyle’s on the beach and the Watson Bay boutique hotel, you can settle in for an afternoon of outstanding views, a cocktail in hand and the warm bustle of a friendly crowd. Your bareboat charter Sydney is a flexible experience that you can shape into a long lasting memory.

For an overnight stay on your Sydney bareboat charter, why not sail into middle harbour and enjoy the serenity and peacefulness of Bantry Bay or Sugarloaf Bay. Both bays are idyllic and sheltered proving the perfect spots to lower your anchor, pour a glass of wine and enjoy your Sydney bareboat charter.

At Sailcorp, we currently have 4 vessels available for Sydney bareboat charter. For stability on any given day, the Seawind 1000 is the perfect vessel for a bareboat charter for a group of up to 12 people or a family of 6 for an overnight bareboat charter. Accommodating the same number of guests as the Seawind, are the Bavaria 40 and the Jeanneau 40 sailing yachts. Both these vessels are maintained at Sailcorp specifically for a bareboat charter Sydney experience. The smallest vessel in our Sydney bareboat charter fleet is the Bavaria 34. Nimble and very easy to handle, she can accommodate up to 11 guests for the day, or sleeps 4-6 people comfortably.

Hire and Drive / Bareboats  available on Sydney Harbour

Chartering on Sydney Harbour can be an exciting experience.  You can sail your own yacht, steer your own powerboat, or enjoy one of many larger skippered boats available.  Whether it’s a quiet weekend away or a corporate function, Sail Australia can recommend the best boat to suit your needs.

Experience Although no formal qualifications are required to skipper a bareboat charter on Sydney Harbour, experience is a must.  Sydney Harbour is very busy, and at the weekends especially , the Harbour comes alive with yachts and cruisers enjoying a day out.  As long as there is one experienced person onboard, everyone should have an enjoyable day.  If you would like a completely relaxing day, a skipper can show  you the sights.  There are a couple of yachts capable of going outside the heads, and these require formal qualifications – please inquire.

Own the adventure, invest in a bareboat

Boat owners can have the best of both worlds; An income, plus private access to a professionally maintained boat in a world-class sailing destination.

How a Whitsundays bareboat charter works

A bareboating charter in the Whitsundays does not include a professional crew. You and your family or friends hire a fully equipped yacht or catamaran and operate the vessels yourselves. While on a bareboat charter, you decide your itinerary and the pace of your holiday – where you anchor each night and what activities you do around the Islands.

Some people have incredibly adventurous bareboat charters focused on sailing, resort hopping, hiking and snorkelling. Others prefer to make their Whitsundays sailing holiday a relaxing escape, enjoying lazing on pristine beaches, curling up with a book, unplugging and living onboard at a slower pace.

No qualifications are required to hire a bareboat in Queensland. Everyone receives a comprehensive briefing on how to operate their vessel safely and if needed, help is never far away. Our team are there to support all of our guests on their Whitsundays sailing adventure.  If you’re feeling unsure about your ability to handle a boat, you can hire a sail guide for an hourly or daily rate to make sure you’re confident with skippering the boat yourself.

What does it cost to hire a yacht in the Whitsundays?

The cost of hiring a yacht and sailing the Whitsundays depends on the time of year, the type of boat and the number of people you want to sail with. We’ve made it simple to get a quick quote; Put the dates you want to charter a yacht into our simple online booking system.

Bareaboat Yacht Hire in the Whitsundays is a Certified Ecotourism Holiday

Whitsunday Rent A Yacht is recognised as a Green Travel Leader by Ecotourism Australia, having held ECO Certification for over 10 years. When you embark on a bareboat charter with us through the Whitsundays, you can rest assured that your holiday is not having a negative impact on the incredible location you’re in.

When & how to charter yachts Australia for a great sailing cruise?

Best Time To Visit : Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef are best visited in winter (April – November), Queensland and Sydney are best from November to late January.

Key Cruising Areas : The east coast offers many itinerary options - see beautiful beaches and iconic Australian landmarks in Sydney, or head north to the Great Barrier Reef. On the wild west coast see incredible wrecks, rare species such as dugongs and whale sharks, and excellent wine regions.

Don’t Miss : Take a charter from Cairns to see why the Great Barrier reef is one of the seven wonders of the world. With a private Great Barrier charter you can escape the commercial dive areas and explore the quieter ribbon reefs and private island resorts. Dive and snorkel amongst a kaleidoscope of marine life, partake in some game fishing, and enjoy BBQ dinners under an incredible night sky from the deck of your yacht.

Best Spots for Wining and Dining : The gorgeous area of Margaret River is famous for its boutique wine producers. Here you can hop from vineyard to beach to ancient forest, and be back in town in time to dine at one of the many award winning restaurants. Try the marron at Cape Lodge, paired with a glass of local chardonnay.

Best Local Dish : “When you see the sea, eat fish”. In the heart of the barrier reef on Lizard Island, heed this advice and dine at the exclusive Salt Water Restaurant. Enjoy local produce with incredible views of blazing sunsets.

Local Culture : Visit the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park to see the world’s most concentrated area of significant Aboriginal Heritage sites, complete with a traditional lunch of emu and kangaroo! Sail to an exclusive anchorage within the park to swim, fish or hike to spectacular waterfalls.

Best Beach : Set in incredible lazuline waters and surrounded by coral reef, the powder-soft white sands of Whitehaven beach are hard to beat. Stretching over 7km, even in peak season you can still feel like you’ve found a private paradise.

Sailo recommends : The fireworks of Sydney are second to none. Venture Down Under in December to watch the harbour light up under a myriad of colours, from the comfort of your superyacht, for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve.

Australia is a huge country, so it has a considerable climatic variety. The northern section of Australia has a more tropical influenced climate. It is hot and humid in the summer and quite warm and dry in the winter. The southern parts are cooler with mild summers and cool, sometimes rainy winters. Even non-desert areas of Australia are subject to sudden increases in temperature, caused by winds coming from the desert. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. December and January are the hottest months in Australia. July and August are the coldest. In general, summer daytime temperatures are usually between 25 and 30°C and winter temperatures are between 5 and 10°C.

bareboat yacht charters in australia

What is a Bareboat?

Bareboat is the term used to describe a charter vessel (a boat you can hire) that is supplied without a crew. Another way to think of this is a comparison between a taxi (crewed boat) and a rental car (bareboat). A bareboat allows you to sail your own itinerary at your own pace, on your own private yacht or catamaran.

At Charter Yachts Australia we offer a range of bareboat yachts and catamarans to sail the Whitsunday Islands. Our boats cater for groups of between 2 and 10 guests.

It’s Easy to Sail Yourself

The sheltered waters of the Whitsundays make for easy sailing. Sailing a bareboat does require at least some experience on the water. You can take the easier option of motoring any vessel in our fleet around the islands or taking out one of our Power Catamarans. We’ll send you a checklist at the start of the booking enquiry to ensure that you have the required sailing experience for a “skipper yourself” holiday.

All charters receive a 4 hour brief on the vessel including time out on the water where we make sure you are confident at anchoring and picking up a mooring for the night. As an option you can take on a sail guide to help get you on your way.

reflections moored at stonehaven

Like a Holiday Home or Houseboat

Catamaran "Saloon" Deck

All of our boats come supplied with linen, safety equipment, a fully equipped kitchen, snorkelling gear, navigation charts and guides plus a 4 hour introductory brief.

You’ll need to arrange your own food. This makes bareboating a bit like renting a holiday unit that you can move to another beautiful location each day. You might also be familiar with houseboats, which can be found on the flat waters of rivers and lakes around Australia: bareboats offer a similar opportunity designed for sailing in the coastal waters that surround Whitsunday islands where you won’t find ‘houseboats’.

TESTIMONIALS

The queen marie sets a standard befitting its regal name....

This is the fourth time we have chartered a boat in the Whitsundays and the ‘Queen Marie’ is by far the best boat we have had. This big, powerful boat is easy to drive, even in inclement weather, and handles beautifully. If you can drive a car you can drive this boat!

Queen Maries’ speed and stability were definite highlights!

We were lucky enough to have the ‘Queen Marie’ as our lead boat for the annual Multihull Whitsundays Rendezvous and she was perfect! Her spacious accommodation meant all guests were very comfortable throughout our charter, comfortable beds, our own bathrooms, plenty of space for socialising, huge storage areas so we could enjoy our week clutter-free, plus a very well equipped galley with everything we needed for each meal.

We’ll be back for sure!

I loved this holiday. My second time on Whitsundays

Experience the whitsundays at its best, it doesn’t matter where you’ve been… you’ll love where you’re going, you won’t want to miss this.

Sailing holidays in australia – guide to bareboat charter in australia.

  • Post published: 26 October 2017
  • Post category: Australia / Oceania/South Pacific

Have you ever hired your own sailing boat for a few days ? The sensation is awesome. It’s pure freedom, pure nature, and pure beauty. However, finding the necessary information – and an affordable vessel – isn’t always easy.  I’ve been through that phase of planning a few sailing holidays in Australia and decided to share my findings and experience in this guide to bareboat charter in Australia. If you have tips of your own, please share them in the comments at the end!

Sailing Australia Sydney Harbour

Level of experience needed for hiring a bareboat charter in Australia

Although no license is required for sailing in Australia , it is obviously recommended to know a bit about what you’re doing when you plan sailing holidays with a bareboat charter.

There are many yacht clubs on the east coast where you can learn more about sailing. I used to join races on Sundays as a crew member to get acquainted with the sailing language and reflexes. Along with some reading, it’s an excellent start to understanding how things work. Then, go on a small adventure hiring a tiny boat on a lake or a river for a few hours: the basic principles are the same as for a big one on the open sea.

Most bareboat chartered companies in Australia will ask for proof of experience (we had to list our two skippers’ experiences for hiring the boat in the Whitsundays ), others will just say that it is recommended (our experience for hiring a catamaran near Fraser Island ). It depends on the agency you rent from and on the difficulties in the area.

No one in your group has sailing experience? You may charter a boat with a skipper included if you have the budget. Otherwise, your best option could be to join a tour. Viator* has a selection of sailing tours along the Australian coast, click here to see it.

The best sailing holidays in Australia where you can go with a bareboat charter

“Best” is always biased. But these are the destinations in Australia that came back over and over again when I was looking for great places for sailing holidays in Australia:

1. The Whitsundays

Sailing the Whitsundays is very popular and has earned a spot on many Australia bucket lists .

Whitsundays Islands - sailing charter boat

2. The Great Sandy Strait

It’s a great opportunity to explore the less-visited side of K’gari (Fraser Island), the world’s largest sand island located in Queensland .

fraser island sailing

3. Sydney Harbour

Sailing near the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge with the CBD in the background is not how I imagine my sailing holidays. I prefer more natural areas. But quite quickly, we could reach less busy parts of the harbour as we left the city behind.

4. Moreton Bay ( Stradbroke Island / Moreton Island )

Moreton Bay is our playground near Brisbane . Not far from the city, the bay gives access to a few stunning islands and great scuba diving spots. It’s a beautiful spot for sailing; you have many options according to the wind direction.

bareboat yacht charters in australia

5. Tasmania

For the Hobart region (toward the D’Entrecasteaux Channel): February/March is the best season as the weather is unpredictable during summer.

For the other regions, I only found skippered charter boats or tours – which considerably increase the budget.

Other options for bareboat charters in Australia that I haven’t checked out : Pittwater and the Hawkesbury River ( New South Wales ), Melbourne (Port Phillip Bay), the Gold Coast’s Broadwater, Lake Macquarie, and Lady Musgrave .

Keep in mind that with a bareboat charter in Australia, you are restricted to smooth waters, and you cannot go offshore. You will need to choose a destination close to the mainland.

6. Gippsland Lakes

Although sailing Gippsland Lakes in Victoria is not the most amazing adventure if you’re after stunning landscapes, it’s an easy one to organise. First, it’s easy to organise: you can go there for the weekend (it’s four hours away from Melbourne) and there are supermarkets and pubs easy to access by boat if you haven’t had time to plan your trip. But it’s also protected and there aren’t many dangers to worry about. We even hired a bareboat that didn’t have a GPS for navigation.

How to find a bareboat charter in Australia

Google Search is always a good start. If you are looking to sail around popular destinations like the Whitsundays or Sydney Harbour, you will get relevant results straight away with the keywords “bareboat + destination”.

The ones we have used: Charter Yachts Australia in  Airlie Beach,   Fraser Escapes in Hervey Bay  and  Moreton Bay Holidays Afloat from Brisbane .

Fraser Escapes also has a boat available to sail all the way to Lady Musgrave from Hervey Bay. We haven’t done that expedition (yet!).

For Townsville / Magnetic Island , we found out the only local company that was offering charter services closed.

I was lucky to know people who owned a sailing boat when I was in Sydney, so I didn’t hire one down there. You can visit  Sailcorp website  for more information about the bareboat charters options they offer from Lavender Bay.

AnyBoat is in contact with many boat owners who rent their vessels. You can send an inquiry to [email protected] for more information. I have not used their service yet, but their team has always been helpful by email.

In Gippsland Lakes, we hired a boat from Riviera Nautic in Metung.

Budget to hire a boat for your sailing holidays in Australia

fraser island sailing

Renting your own boat is not cheap, but it’s not an untouchable dream. It mostly depends on the size of the vessel and its age. Some ships are very luxurious and expensive, but some others won’t cost more than a room with ocean views in a resort. I made some comparisons in my articles about sailing the Whitsundays and sailing K’gari (Fraser Island) .

When you look at prices, don’t forget you will have to add the petrol on top of that, it’s often not included.

But if you have to hire the skipper with the boat, that’s another adventure (that I can’t afford to try!).

Responsible travel tip : Keep in mind that whatever you use on the boat may end up in the water. Limit your rubbish and choose products (soap, sunscreen…) that won’t negatively impact the environment.

Where can you sail a bareboat charter in Australia?

This list is non-exhaustive. It just includes the destinations I have identified during my research. If you’re aware of another destination where you can sail a bareboat charter in Australia, please let me know. I would love to add it to that list – and even test it myself!

We went sailing in the Whitsundays with Whitsunday Rent a Yacht and had the most amazing week. Kids loved snorkeling every day and exploring different beaches. We didn’t have much boating experience but they trained us up and we got the hang of things pretty quickly. Such a great family holiday!

Bareboat & Crewed Yacht Charters

Sailing free and exploring the seas, beaches and bays of an idyllic location sounds wonderful and it is.  Experience the joy of swimming free from the deck of a yacht, anchoring in a tiny quiet bay, dropping into the remote rustic restaurant set under the shade of pine trees touching the shore. It is all possible.

We can assist you with where to begin, deciding the best time of the year to visit, what to take, how long to plan to stay, where to start and end, and all the other questions you have not even thought of yet.

Below are some of the very good reasons for booking your yacht charter through us:

1. Discuss your holiday plans in English with a consultant who has a raft of knowledge about many of the destinations 2. Let us deal with the suppliers and collate a choice of yachts that meet your preferences 3. Benefit from the security of our long standing and trusting relationships with local suppliers 4. Pay in Australian dollars and avoid international bank fees 5. Get help planning the lead up to your embarkation, your sailing itinerary and your onward journey 6. Be well supported while on your sailing holiday to get the local information you need to get the best out of the trip 7. We always use trusted suppliers but things can go wrong. If your yacht presents with issues while on board and you need to follow up after disembarkation, we will deal with the local service provider on your behalf for the best outcome.

Bareboat charters - Sail your own yacht

Bareboat yacht charters provide the utmost in freedom and privacy – sail where ever you want, whenever you want to, with whoever you want! For anyone new to sailing, a bareboat yacht is a boat with no crew. In other words, you and your group will be sailing the yacht yourselves as the skipper and crew. This requires some knowledge, skill and accreditation though. If you want to hire a car you must have proof that you can drive – yacht hire is no different. If you know a skipper who has all the skills and knows the area you want to sail in then you are sorted. If not, Mariner Boating is able to help to book a professional skipper to assist.

Crewed Yacht Charters

Another option for a first time charter or luxury experience may be to organise a Crewed Yacht Charter. These are usually larger yachts or often purpose built catamarans, sleeping 10 or even up to 12 people in spacious cabins with their own ensuites. Crewed charters will always consist of at least a skipper and cook, but often also have a deckhand or extra host on board as well. The crew will prepare meals and service the cabin as they would on a cruise ship. But the intimate nature of this holiday option allows you the luxury of choice including where to stop, when to swim, enjoy a BBQ on board or take a canoe and explore.

Mariner Boating can help book your bareboat and crewed charters here in Australia or overseas. Call us today on 02 9966 1244 or enquire below to start planning your idyllic sailing experience.

Choosing the perfect fit for your sail: Bareboat vs. Crewed Yacht charters

S etting sail in the open expanse of the sea might sound thrilling but challenging at the same time. Choosing the correct type of yacht for your voyage can be a dilemma, especially when there are so many types. But do they match your needs?

For this, the first step is to do your research. This will bring clarity to your decision on whether you want to set sail alone or need professional assistance. Choosing the correct type of yacht is crucial for a hassle-free sailing experience.

Yacht charters have endless types, but this article only gives you in-depth information about the broader categories of bareboat and crewed charters.

The goal is to help you make an informed decision by considering your group size, requirements, and priorities.

So let’s get started!

Types of yacht charters

Each yacht charter is tailored to meet different tastes and priorities, and choosing one can be overwhelming. Some of the most famous known types include:

Bareboat charters

Crewed charters.

  • Skipper charters
  • Luxury charters
  • Cabin charters

This section will delve into the pros and cons of bareboat and crewed charters to help you plan the vacation you rightly deserve.

Chartering a bareboat gives you a thrilling experience of exploring the open sea. This type of yacht gives you freedom of navigation. This means you’re the captain, and you’re the crew.

However, the sailing period is pre-defined while renting a bareboat from a charter company.

Pros of bareboat charter:

  • Flexibility

On a bareboat charter, you are the captain to set your itinerary. There is no need to stick to a fixed schedule, and you can make changes as you desire. This gives you the advantage of discovering more unexplored sites you can’t do on a busy cruise.

  • Cost-effective experience

Bareboat charters provide financial leverage because you handle the boat yourself. So, heavy charges of the crew can be avoided easily. This cost-saving feature makes it an attractive choice for a memorable voyage across the sea.

  • Customized experience

Chartering a bareboat allows you to be accessible to personalize your sailing experience. You can choose your dream destination and explore in solitude.

This provides an excellent opportunity to create precious, intimate memories with family and friends. So, your sailing experience will reflect your preferences and interests.

  • Self-confidence

The independence that the bareboat charter offers comes with a bundle of self-confidence. You get an opportunity to manage life at sea on your own.

Getting out of your comfort zone of traditional traveling boosts your confidence automatically and motivates you to discover the hidden gem of places on your own.

Cons of bareboat charter

  • Experience required

The independence that a bareboat charter offers seems attractive. However, it comes with a precondition. You must have prior sailing experience, and the necessary sailing skills are required for a self-sufficient adventure in the sea.

  • Self-catering

Preparing meals, planning, and managing supplies can be daunting; on a bareboat charter, you are responsible for self-catering. It can be an enjoyable experience for culinary enthusiasts. However, it required precise planning and organizing to ensure self-sufficiency in the sea.

Even though an independent sail must be thrilling, nothing compares to having an assisted crew while you relax and enjoy the panoramic ocean scenes.

A crewed charter usually comes with a small crew of a skipper, a chef, and a hostess to assist you while you relax.

Pros of crewed charters

  • Professional crew service

A skilled captain always makes navigation easier. By renting a crewed charter, you will gain a deeper insight into your destination through the crew’s local knowledge. Moreover, it ensures your safety and expert guidance in the sea.

This will not only make your journey smooth but memorable as well. Whether it comes to navigation or wanting a cocktail, the crew will be there to fulfill every need.

  • Stress-free sail

The whole point of a vacation is to remain stress-free. While the crew handles all the operations and technicalities, you are left by yourself to enjoy. This provides an excellent opportunity to make memories with your loved ones or immerse in your surroundings without any worry.

With the crew catering to your every need, it leaves you plenty of time for exploration and relaxation.

  • Customization

Crewed charters are famous for their adaptability. If you want to make any changes in your schedule, the crew is there to help you. You can plan intimate family gatherings and celebrations with your friends with the help of a limited but professional crew.

It is an attractive option because your voyage can be personalized to make it memorable. This adds a hint of exclusivity but at a reasonable price.

Cons of a crewed charter

  • Costly

The exclusivity that a crewed charter offers comes with a price tag. Even though it ensures a wholesome experience with a professional crew, it can be a limiting factor for people with a budget constraint. So, careful evaluation is necessary when paying this much for an experienced crew to be on board with you.

  • Limited privacy

Even though a professional crew ensures safety, their presence can be a compromise to your independence and privacy on the yacht. Your crew may influence your itinerary, and this results in less freedom than a bareboat charter.

However, these confusions can quickly be cleared out very easily. By communicating your needs effectively to your crew, they can maintain a balance between privacy and assistance.

  • Itinerary limitations

The crew’s operations may impact your original plan, and these changes may not always be feasible. This can be frustrating sometimes but can be resolved by communicating with your crew.

However, the level of independence is different from a bareboat charter.

Now you can decide…

We have discussed the pros and cons of the primary two yacht categories. We now know that a bareboat charter stands out for independent sailors who seek a self-sufficient adventure. On the other hand, a crewed charter offers more relaxation as the operational and technical aspect of sailing is handled by crew members. At the same time, you relax in a hassle-free vessel.

These distinctions will help you make an informed decision while considering your budget constraints, prior sailing experience, and dream destinations.

Once you research, you can also contact yacht chartering companies for more information. Chartering companies worldwide, like 12knots.com yacht charters , offer a diverse insight into a fleet of yachts and sailing destinations.

So ditch the old travelling options, and for your next vacation, charter a yacht for a perfect getaway.
