Travel Between Curacao and Aruba

by Jaime Jacques

Published on 23 Aug 2018

Aruba remains the most popular island in the Dutch Caribbean and with good reason. Think clear turquoise water, long stretches of powdery white sand and a beautiful historic center dotted with pastel painted houses and colonial architecture. This island, though small, packs a lot of punch with its high rise resorts, vibrant nightlife, glitzy casinos, and everything in between. The nearby isle of Curaçao, in contrast, is known for its relaxed vibe and excellent snorkeling and diving. It’s the perfect antidote to the excitement of Aruba and a popular side trip for nature lovers seeking something less developed and more low-key. Travelling between the two islands is straightforward, though options are limited.

Quick and Easy: Flying

Flights between the two islands are fairly economical with the average fare falling between $120 and $160 USD. The two primary airlines are Insel Air and Aruba Airlines, running several flights daily that take just half an hour. Note that many of the time shares have check in and check out dates on the weekends. As a result, the Aruba airport is usually packed from Friday to Sunday, so it's best to plan your island hopping between Monday and Thursday.

If you fly from Aruba to Curaçao, you will pay taxes at the airport both when leaving Aruba and when returning from Curaçao. Expect to pay between $30 and $35 leaving Aruba and $20 and $25 leaving Curaçao. These airport taxes are usually not included in ticket prices, so factor them into the cost when planning your trip.

Slow and Scenic: By Boat

The only options for travelling between the two islands by boat is to rent a private charter or to do it as part of a cruise. Unfortunately, the ocean is too rough for smaller boats to travel between the islands, and due to lack of interest, ferries are no longer in service. Several yacht companies offer trips to Aruba, Curaçao and the nearby island of Bonaire. Once on the island of Curaçao, there is a free ferry service that makes regular trips between Willemstad and Otrobanda, the two main shopping areas on the island.

It’s always a good time to visit the islands of Aruba and Curaçao. Both islands boast consistently warm weather with average temperatures of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, both lie far outside the hurricane belt, ensuring storms will not highjack your vacation. Aruba tends to be more crowded during high season from December to April, when North Americans flock to the Caribbean for respite from winter weather. During these months hotel prices spike and reservations should be made well in advance. For fewer crowds and lower prices visit during low season from April until November. In September especially, prices hit an annual low when the trade winds die and the temperature rises. If you don't mind the heat, it is a perfect time to take advantage of the deals.

Getting Around

Taxi service and rental car agencies are available on both islands, and roads are in good condition and easy to navigate. If you plan to rent a car and tour one of the islands on your own, be sure to reserve early. During peak season, it’s not unusual for rental agencies to be completely booked. Bus service is widely used by tourists on Aruba to travel from downtown to the beach resort areas, and the buses that travel between the beach and the historic center are clearly marked. Getting around most of the rest of the island requires a car. On Curaçao, public transportation is used mainly by the locals.

Maine Event on a Cheoy Lee 125

  • By Capt. Ken Kreisler
  • Updated: February 18, 2009

ytgfeb09mechart445.jpg

While my typical summer boating season is usually spent frequenting the waters of the Jersey Shore, Chesapeake Bay, Long Island Sound, and the outer reaches of Block Island Sound, I try my best to get in at least one Maine visit during the season. But as the past summer neared a close, I still had not been able to peel myself away for this annual event. So when Kathleen Allen of IYC’s charter management division called to invite me to join her for three days aboard the 125- foot Cheoy Lee Namoh , I jumped at the opportunity.

Our itinerary would be a round-trip venture from Camden to explore the waters of Penobscot Bay. The Bay is some 30 miles long and almost as wide and home to the islands of Vinalhaven, North Haven, Islesboro, Deer Isle, and Isle au Haut. Close to 2,000 other islands and islets are scattered around the bay, many visited only by birds and seals. The natural beauty of this rugged coastline makes for some of the finest cruising anywhere.

I found Namoh waiting at Wayfarer Marine, which is just across the water from the Camden town dock. Ahhh, that feeling of leaving terra firma behind as i stepped aboard…In that instant, as I took a deep breath of crisp, clean, salt-tinged air, the schooner Olad dropped canvas as she left port on the outgoing tide, and I immediately shed all land-based cares. It is that easy to get into a Maine state of mind.

I met deckhand Crawford Railton on the afterdeck dining area and was quickly joined by captain Greg Russell, who made the introductions to the other guests. Besides Allen, two brokers joined us: Heather Krebs of Abiego Yachts International, and Carol Kent of C.K. Yacht Charters. Rounding out our guest list was long time Yachting contributor and photographer Billy Black.

Namoh is a fully equipped and expertly maintained vessel. She offers a sundeck, skylounge, a Jacuzzi, and plenty of toys. Highlights include a pair of Yamaha Waverunners, a 17-foot tender powered by a 115-horsepower Yamaha outboard, water skis, wakeboards, snorkel and fishing gear, kayaks, and a water trampoline. She has WiFi throughout and sleeps 10 in five elegant staterooms including the owner’s suite. and best of all, her crew is as attentive and professional as any I’ve met.

But it is the youthful-looking Russell who sets the great vibe aboard Namoh . Originally from Zimbabwe, he grew up on a tobacco farm, learning and honing management skills he would later bring to the helms of the yachts Ipanema , Osceola , Ocean Mermaid , and Hiya . He’s university-educated with degrees in both marine biology and agriculture. This Maine resident, with more than 80,000 nautical miles in his wake, is both a skilled mariner and a great conversationalist.

For lunch, chef Sandy Goldbery prepared prosciutto, red pepper, and fresh buffalo mozzarella on baguettes, accompanied by a wonderful chardonnay, served by chief stewardess Joanne Mill and 2nd stewardess Jenny Snellgove. It was the perfect summer meal to begin our Down East cruise. With the affable and engaging Russell joining us for a few moments before getting underway, the table conversation was lively and interesting; we all looked forward to the time we would have together.

By the time plates were cleared, Russell had nudged the big boat out of the tight confines of the harbor and set a course for Butter Island about two hours away. As we watched Camden slip away behind Namoh’s stern, I strolled to the port side for a look at the expanse of Penobscot Bay that lay ahead. We were underway, surrounded by sun, sky, and sea. Namoh is capable of a 20-knot cruise but we were content to motor along at a leisurely ten. After setting the hook in the lee of Butter Island, Railton and first mate Piet Lombaard offered to ready the kayaks. While several of us went off exploring, the rest opted to enjoy the warm late afternoon on the sundeck.

Later, Coltrane played softly on the stereo as we sat on the skylounge deck watching the sky turn slowly from soft hues of blue to a deep, dark cobalt. Going with the flow was never this easy. As the stars of the constellation Sagittarius emerged from the night sky, we were invited to the salon to enjoy some wine before a dinner of baby romaine salad, a deliciously spicy cioppino entree, and a nectarine tart to finish things off. We lingered well into the evening, sharing tales of past adventures and voyages. It was easy to fall asleep that night, thanks to the wonderful food, excellent wine, and luxurious surroundings of our staterooms.

By late morning, when the fog had burnt off, the sky went blue, the sun came out, and it was time to visit the nearby town of Castine. Russell and Lombaard had the tender ready and we meandered slowly among the many small islands, watching seals bask on rocks, and enjoying the natural beauty of the bay as we made our way to the town dock.

Founded in 1613, Castine is one of New England’s oldest towns, and we enjoyed wandering the waterfront and elm-lined streets. We strolled past the stately Pentagoet and Manor Inns, which both serve dinner and have pubs for casual dining as well. Castine’s post office opened its doors in 1814, making it the oldest continuously operated branch in the country and the Cold Comfort Summer Theater offers musicals and plays during July and august.

It would have been nice to sit on the wharf and while away the Maine afternoon but Goldbery’s lunch of crab cakes and raspberry fool-mashed raspberries whipped with sugar, vanilla, and cream-beckoned.

Russell and I were on our second foolish helping when I noticed the crew going back and forth from the galley to the swim platform. “We’re going to take advantage of the great weather and have our dinner ashore, over there,” he said, pointing to a spit of beach off our port bow. I was going to partake in the famous Namoh lobster bake.

By early evening, we were all on the beach and pitching in with the preparations. Russell readied the steamer while some of us helped the crew shuck corn and wash potatoes. I harvested about five pounds of fresh seaweed as well as a bucket of mussels from the water’s edge. Less than an hour later, with wine corks popping, lobster shells cracking, and the sun hanging red above the treetops, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner. Dessert, back on Namoh , would be a made from- scratch, wild Maine blueberry pie, after which a delightful time in the Jacuzzi would prove to be the perfect end to a perfect day.

Our final day aboard was a leisurely cruise that took us by Isle au Haut’s Duck Harbor and the Winter and Seal Bays of Vinalhaven. The sun was warm, the sky clear, and the environs were spectacular. While underway, we enjoyed a lunch of baby Maine shrimp roll and homemade pineapple sorbet on the skylounge deck. Later that evening, in a comfortable anchorage, Russell hosted our final dinner of parmesan-laced arugula salad and grilled veal chops as we toasted new friends and shipmates.

I have always found that cruising coastal Maine in summer is special. And this trip was no exception, thanks to Russell, his crew, and Namoh herself. If you are lucky enough to find her available, whether Down East or somewhere else, she is sure to deliver a memorable time for you and your guests.

Namoh charters in the Caribbean during the winter and is offered from $125,000/week, plus expenses. For the summer schedule, contact the management office for complete details. IYC Charter Management, (954) 522-2323; _** www.iyc.com**_

Four Seasons Unveils First Yacht Itineraries and Suite Interiors

Four Seasons loyalists have a lot to be excited about, with the launch of the brand’s first yacht nearing in 2026.

The 14-deck luxury vessel, which is partly being modeled off of Aristotle Onassis’ iconic yacht Christina O , will offer some of the most opulent amenities at sea. Initial renderings released in October 2023 show a 66-foot saltwater pool, a marina deck built for swimming and watersports, sophisticated dining concepts, and 95 guest suites. Now, the Four Seasons has released the first renderings showcasing the spacious suites on board—and we got a first look.

The ship's sleek design seeks to translate “the Four Seasons guest experience in terms of comfort level and the luxury standards" to life at sea, Fredrik Johannson, partner and executive director of Tillberg Design of Sweden and the lead designer on the Four Seasons Yacht, tells Condé Nast Traveler. Even the hotel group’s beloved mattresses will be offered in every room.

The first renderings of the Four Season Yacht's suites were released Tuesday, showcasing spacious guest rooms with ocean views.

Also just revealed: the first destinations the yacht will call upon throughout its inaugural year. Passengers can expect to visit a wide variety of exclusive and jet-setting locales, as the yacht is slated to visit more than 130 destinations across 30 countries in its first year alone. And of course, guests will have the option to book pre-and-post cruise extensions at iconic Four Seasons resorts along the way.

“We’re incredibly proud to announce the first itineraries aboard Four Seasons Yachts, and know that these experiences will exceed our guest expectations when we set sail in 2026,” says Alejandro Reynal, Four Seasons President and CEO.

Each voyage calls upon small ports that are typically considered “yacht playgrounds," Thatcher Brown, the Chief Commercial Officer at Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings LTD and co-owner of Four Seasons Yachts, tells Traveler. Passengers can expect to sail between Caribbean and Mediterranean coastal havens almost exclusively visited by private vessels .

When the yacht launches in January 2026, it will first head to the Caribbean, where it will complete seven-night, island-hopping itineraries between St. Barths, Nevis, the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curaçao, and Aruba.

Then in March 2026, the ship will cross the Atlantic and begin sailing its Grand Mediterranean voyages , which include visits to alluring towns in Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey. Travelers can also expect to access “under-the-radar” Greek islands , like Ios and Milos, as well as more popular Grecian destinations like Athens and Santorini, according to a Four Seasons release.

Guests will have the option to adjoin suites to accommodate families or other groups traveling together.

Sure the destinations sound glamorous—but it might be difficult for passengers to depart the ship and leave behind the luxe accommodations on board. Specifically the guest suites—which will offer 50% more living space per guest than any other competitor currently at sea, according to the company’s release.

Each space will offer floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the sea, bathrooms with double vanities, and large closets. “Almost every single bed on this whole yacht is facing the sea,” Johannson says. “All the rooms there have this clarity to them. They are very exclusive, but they have a beautiful simplicity.”

Every suite will also offer private outdoor terraces. What’s more: guests will have the option to adjoin suites to accommodate families or other groups traveling together. There are more than 100 different adjoining configurations, including the option to reserve the entire side of a deck—an opportunity that would afford a group of travel companions more than 13,000 square feet of living space.

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Yacht Architecture Balcony and Building

The Four Seasons Yacht will be divided between Funnel and Loft Suites, each with private outdoor terraces.

But the true showstopper on board is sure to be the Funnel Suite. Located on the very top deck where the funnel or smokestack would traditionally be, the Funnel Suite is essentially the ship’s penthouse, spanning four floors and 9,975 square feet. The massive space will feature three bedrooms and a terrace with outdoor dining space, splash pool, and outdoor showers. But the suite’s best amenity will be its views. The four-story, floor-to-ceiling windows have been fitted with the largest piece of contiguous curved glass at sea, offering sweeping 280-degree views of the ocean as the yacht sails from port to port.

Voyages on board the Four Seasons yacht haven’t yet opened for general booking, but interested travelers can join the yacht’s waitlist in hopes of securing one of the elegant suites on the 2026 itineraries.

Why the Baltimore Bridge Collapsed So Quickly

The steel frame of the Francis Scott Key Bridge sits on top of a container ship after the bridge collapsed Baltimore...

Just shy of half past one in the morning, the MV Dali , a giant container ship, was sailing gently out of the port of Baltimore when something went terribly wrong. Suddenly, lights all over the 300-meter-long vessel went out. They flicked on again a moment later, but the ship then began to veer to the right, toward one of the massive pylon-like supports on the Francis Scott Key truss bridge—a huge mass of steel and concrete that spans the Patapsco River.

The Dali ’s lights went out a second time. Then the impact came. The ship ploughed into the support, with large sections of the bridge’s main truss section instantly snapping apart and falling into the river. It took just 20 seconds or so for the structure to come down.

Now, a major US port is in disarray, and several people who were working on the bridge at the time of its collapse are missing. A rescue operation is underway. President Biden has called the disaster a “terrible accident.” Ship traffic is currently stuck on either side of the crash site, and a major roadway through Baltimore has been cut off.

“It’s a dreadful tragedy, and something you hope never to see,” says David Knight, a bridge expert and specialist adviser to the UK’s Institution of Civil Engineers. But commenting on footage of the bridge collapse , he says he is not surprised by the manner in which it crumpled.

Large steel structures may seem invulnerable, but steel, explains Knight, is relatively lightweight for its size. As soon as it is pushed or pulled the wrong way with enough force, it can fold like paper. In this case, the Francis Scott Key Bridge was a “continuous,” or unjointed, bridge that had a 366-meter-long central truss section. (Truss bridges use steel beams, arranged in triangular shapes, to support their load.) The central truss was made up of three horizontal stretches, known as spans, with two sets of supports holding these above the water. It was the third-largest structure in the world of its kind.

“When you take a support away, there is very little in the way of robustness,” says Knight. “It will drag down, as we saw, all three spans.” The separate approach spans remain standing. There is nothing in Knight’s view that immediately suggests any structural problem with the bridge. An engineering firm, Hardesty & Hanover (H&H), confirmed to WIRED that it performed an inspection of the bridge in 2019, and that other inspections have been carried out since, but did not provide any additional details on the state of the structure. WIRED has approached H&H for further comment. In June last year, the US Federal Highway Administration rated the condition of the bridge as satisfactory .

The immense force of the container ship impact should not be underestimated, adds Knight. Such vessels require a lot of power and time—perhaps many minutes—to come to a complete stop. The Francis Scott Key Bridge was completed in 1977. In more recent decades, bridge engineers have commonly incorporated defenses to reduce the potential damage by ship strikes when bridges are erected in similar locations, Knight says. These include hydraulic barriers and additional concrete around the base of bridge supports, for instance. However, even with such fortifications in place, heavy strikes can still cause devastating damage.

It is not yet clear why lights turned off and on again on the Dali , a Singapore-flagged ship built in 2015. “That is an indication of a massive problem,” says Salvatore Mercogliano, a maritime historian at Campbell University in North Carolina and YouTuber who has analyzed the crash .

At the time of the accident, two pilots—mariners who board a ship to help it navigate particular stretches of water, including in and out of ports—from Baltimore were on board. The Dali was broadcasting its position publicly via the automatic identification system (AIS) and traveling at a speed of over 8.5 knots. It then slowed to around 6 knots in the moments before the crash, according to AIS data .

Both pilots and all crew members on the Dali are accounted for. There are no reports of injuries, the ship’s management company, Synergy Group, said in a statement on March 26.

ABC News reports that the crew of the vessel made a desperate mayday call in an attempt to warn transport officials that the crash was about to occur. A report from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), seen by ABC, says the Dali “lost propulsion,” and that the crew were aware they had “lost control” of the ship. Maryland governor Wes Moore told reporters that , thanks to the mayday call, officials were able to stem the flow of traffic over the bridge, an intervention that he says “saved lives.”

Mercogliano says that it is very difficult for ships of this size to make rapid adjustments to their trajectories. Video footage shows a sudden outpouring of smoke from the vessel’s stack, indicating a change in engine activity of some kind. What is particularly disturbing is that, in this case, the vessel ends up ploughing straight into one of the key supports for the bridge, clearly off course. No information as to why this happened has yet become public.

Photographs of the aftermath show the bow of the ship pinned beneath fallen sections of the bridge . The anchor chain is visible, meaning that at some point the anchor was dropped, though it is not certain whether this happened before or after impact. The chain appears to be at an angle, however, which Mercogliano says could be a sign that it was dropped shortly before the crash and dragged for a brief time.

Lawyer James Turner of Quadrant Chambers in London specializes in, among other things, ship collisions. He says that there would have been no automated systems on board a merchant ship of this kind able to prevent the impact. Information from radar, AIS, and visual observations would have been available to the crew, however.

But data-collecting systems may now reveal exactly what happened. As on airplanes, commercial ships have data and audio recorders on the bridge, which are often a key source of information for investigators post-incident. “The master will hit a button and that ensures that the last two hours of audio recording are preserved, as well as all the data from the various parts of the ship, like the engine and steering and so on,” explains Turner. “That can be downloaded and queried.”

He adds that estimates of the ship’s speed at the time of the incident as recorded by AIS are likely “99.99 percent accurate.”

For now, the focus of responders will be on locating survivors from the falling bridge. Two people have been rescued, one of whom is in the hospital. Six construction workers remain missing .

The disaster has come at a difficult time for shipping, with drought afflicting the Panama Canal and Houthi attacks striking multiple vessels in the Red Sea in recent months. Somali piracy is on the rise again , also. The grounding of the Ever Given in the Suez Canal is very much still within recent memory—it occurred a mere three years ago.

The Port of Baltimore insists in a statement that it has not been shut down—road vehicles are still operating within the port—however, all ship traffic in and out is suspended until further notice. AIS data reveals around a dozen commercial vessels at anchor outside the port, their entry now blocked by the stricken bridge and the Dali . It will take some time for the US Army Corps of Engineers to remove the steel pieces of the bridge, which present a significant threat to passing vessels, from the river.

“Whatever ships are in the port are now stuck,” says Mercogliano, who notes that Baltimore is an important port in terms of car deliveries and coal exports.

Overall, he argues that maritime operations are extremely safe today, though the volume and velocity of trade mean that when things go wrong, it can be especially serious.

“We move goods a lot faster than ever before and there’s very little margin for error,” he says. “When there is a mistake, the mistakes tend to be very large.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is giving an update on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday after it was hit by a container ship.

Officials said at least six people are still unaccounted for and search and rescue operations are underway. There was a crew of construction workers on the bridge when it fell, according to authorities.

The NTSB already launched a "go team" to investigate the incident, it said earlier Tuesday. This team consists of technical experts and specialists across the agency on rotational duty assignment to respond as quickly as possible, it said.

US Embassy in touch with Singapore's port authority, State Department says

From CNN’s Jennifer Hansler and Kylie Atwood

The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, in the wake of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Tuesday.

Miller said Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority “has offered to provide assistance to the US Coast Guard.”

The tanker, which collided with the bridge causing the collapse, was Singapore-flagged and bound for Sri Lanka, but Miller said he was “not aware of any contacts with Sri Lanka.”

The ship   was chartered by  Danish shipping company Maersk  and was carrying their customers' cargo, the Danish shipping company told CNN. It also said the ship, DALI, is operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group.

FEIG ELECTRONIC: Moscow-City Skyscrapers Streamline Parking Access and Control with Secure RFID

Feig electronic partners with isbc group to deploy ucode dna rfid security and parking access control solution in moscow business district.

Weilburg, Germany  — December 3,  2019  —  FEIG ELECTRONIC , a leading global supplier of radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and antennas with fifty years of industry experience, announces deployment of the UCODE DNA RFID security and parking contactless identification solution in the Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow-City, one of the world’s largest business district projects.

The management of Moscow-City not only selected long-range, passive UHF RFID to implement in its controlled parking areas, it also chose to implement UCODE DNA , the highest form of secure RAIN RFID technology, developed by NXP Semiconductors.

“Underscoring NXP’s innovation and leadership in developing advanced RAIN RFID technologies, our UCODE DNA was chosen to be incorporated with the FEIG and ISBC implementation of the contactless identification system in the prestigious Moscow-City,” said Mahdi Mekic, marketing director for RAIN RFID with NXP Semiconductors. “This exciting project represents yet another successful deployment of NXP’s contactless portfolio, and showcases our continued ability to meet the high-security requirements of highly demanding applications without compromising user convenience.”

“UCODE DNA is considered the only identification technology to match the physical protection of a barrier with the cybersecurity necessary to truly protect entrances from unauthorized access,” said Manuel Haertlé, senior product manager for FEIG Electronic. “As a respected contactless payment technology company, FEIG applies security know-how from its payment terminals, which are fully certified according to the latest high-class security standards, into our RFID systems. FEIG vehicle access control RFID readers incorporate advanced secure key storage elements, supporting various methods for secure key injection.”

FEIG’s partner ISBC Group provided the knowledge and support for this successful implementation using  FEIG’s long-range UHF RFID . The resulting system enables authorized vehicle entry into areas reserved for private residential use or corporate tenants, while also allowing availability of temporary, fee-based visitor parking. Thanks to the cryptographic authentication of UCODE DNA, both the tag and reader must go through an authentication procedure before the reader will validate the data from the tag, which is transmitted wirelessly. This level of authentication is typically used in the most secure data communication networks.

“The system’s two-step authentication means that only authorized equipment can handle the secure protocol and the data exchange with the UCODE DNA based tag. Without the required cryptographic secrets, other readers would query the tag in vain, because the tag’s response cannot be interpreted or understood,” said Andrey Krasovskiy, director of the RFID department at ISBC Group. “On top of this, each data exchange in the authentication process is unique, so even if a malicious actor were to intercept the communication, the transmission is only good for a single exchange and the tag’s unique identity is protected from cloning.”

Established in 1992 and still growing, Moscow-City is the revitalization and transformation of an industrial riverfront into a new, modern, vibrant and upscale business and residential district. A mix of residential, hotel, office, retail and entertainment facilities, it is located about four kilometers west of Red Square along the Moscow River. Twelve of the twenty-three planned facilities have already been completed, with seven currently under construction. Six skyscrapers in Moscow-City reach a height of at least 300 meters, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower, which rises more than 100 stories.

Partnering with ISBC and deploying FEIG Electronic RFID solutions, the Moscow International Business Center is delivering security and access control to its city center today, as it grows into the city of tomorrow.

Burgess partners with BOAT International on global clean up initiative

Between 6 - 12 May, leading brokerage firm Burgess is partnering with BOAT International on an eco-focused initiative that invites the yachting industry to get hands-on in the fight against water pollution.

The Global Clean Up will encourage anyone in superyachting – individuals, yacht crews, teams, companies  – to pledge to clear at least one bag of litter (per person) from their local area. From beaches and oceanfronts to waterways and rivers, the campaign hopes to encourage people to do something positive for ocean health in their local communities and promote a regular pattern of clean ups.

This is the second time that Burgess has spearheaded the movement. Last year saw more than 300 participants in over 40 locations clear 326 bags of litter and the event forms part of Burgess' ESG campaign which, so far, has raised at least £125K in the name of ocean conservation.

Andrew Pearson, partner at Burgess said: “Ocean plastic pollution is on track to triple by 2060 and it’s not just beaches we need to clean. This is our chance to bring teams, family and friends together ahead of the summer season and realise the impact we can all have collectively.”

Baltimore bridge collapse: Ship issued ‘mayday' before crash; rescuers search for 6 missing people

President joe biden said in remarks from the white house that he expects the federal government to pay for the “entire cost” of rebuilding the bridge, and called on congress to support his efforts to fund the repairs, by staff and ap • published march 26, 2024 • updated 10 mins ago.

A container ship lost power and rammed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, destroying the span in a matter of seconds and plunging it into the river in a terrifying collapse that could disrupt a vital shipping port for months. Several vehicles fell into the chilly waters, and rescuers were searching for survivors.

Speaking at a news conference Tuesday morning, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the operators of the ship issued a mayday call moments before the crash that took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, enabling authorities to limit vehicle traffic from entering the span.

"We're thankful that between the mayday and collapse that we had officials who were able to begin the stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not up on the bridge," Moore said, adding that the warning likely saved lives.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said at least eight people were on the Key Bridge at the time of its collapse. Two people were pulled from the waters under the bridge, one in serious condition, according to Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace. Wiedefeld said the search is continuing for the other six who were working on the bridge repairing masonry and potholes at the time.

In Photos: Francis Scott Key Bridge collapses after being struck by container ship

Earlier Tuesday, officials said sonar indicated that there are vehicles in the water, where the temperature was about 47 degrees Fahrenheit in the early hours of Tuesday,  according to a buoy  that collects data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Authorities said a crew was working on the bridge at the time and it was not immediately clear if the cars detected in the water belonged to the workers, who typically park on the bridge during their shifts.

The ship crashed into one of the bridge’s supports, causing the structure to break apart like a toy. It tumbled into the water in a matter of seconds — a shocking spectacle that was captured on video and posted on social media. The vessel caught fire, and thick, black smoke billowed out of it.

“Never would you think that you would see, physically see, the Key Bridge tumble down like that. It looked like something out of an action movie,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, calling it “an unthinkable tragedy."

Earlier, Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore Fire Department, added that some cargo appeared to be dangling from the bridge, which spans the Patapsco River, a vital artery that sees more than 30,000 cars a day. Along with the Port of Baltimore, it is a hub for shipping on the East Coast. Opened in 1977, the bridge is named for the writer of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The collapse is almost sure to create a logistical nightmare for months, if not years, along the East Coast, shutting down ship traffic at the Port of Baltimore and snarling cargo and commuter traffic.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

In a radio transmission to the Baltimore Fire Department, an official can be heard saying, "The entire bridge, the entire Key bridge is in the water."

Moore declared a state of emergency and said there was “no credible evidence” that terrorism was involved.

The governor said he recognized "many of us are hurting right now" and said authorities are working to gather details on what happened. He also thanked first responders for arriving quickly on the scene.

President Joe Biden said in remarks from the White House that he expects the federal government to pay for the “entire cost” of rebuilding the bridge, and called on Congress to support his efforts to fund the repairs.

Asked by a reporter whether the company who owns the container ship should shoulder the costs, Biden said he didn't want to "wait for that to happen."

"We're going to pay for it, to get the bridge rebuilt and reopened," Biden said.

The president also offered prayers and condolences to the families of the missing workers who are still awaiting word on their their loved ones.

“I know every minute in that circumstance feels like a lifetime,” Biden said.

A group of people who gathered nearby told NBC News that their family members were working on the bridge at the time of the collapse. One woman, who was not identified, said her father-in-law. Miguel Luna, was among the workers. She and others were awaiting official information on the status of their loved ones.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott said at a news conference: "We have to first and foremost pray for all of those who are impacted, those families, and pray for our first responders and thank them, all of them, [for] working together — city, state, local — to make sure that we are working through this tragedy."

Bobby Haines, who lives nearby the bridge in Dundalk, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook and I was freaking out," Haines said in an interview with NBC New s. "I thought it was an earthquake and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Synergy Marine Group — which owns and manages the ship called the “Dali” — confirmed the vessel hit a pillar of the bridge at about 1:30 a.m. while two pilots were in control. It said all crew members, including the pilots, were accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries.

The Dali was headed from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and flying under a Singapore flag, according to data from Marine Traffic. The container ship is about 985 feet (300 meters) long and about 157 feet (48 meters) wide, according to the website.

From a vantage point near the entrance to the bridge, jagged remnants of its steel frame were visible protruding from the water, with the on-ramp ending abruptly where the span once began.

Danish shipping giant Maersk said it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying its customers’ cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were on board. The collapse caused Maersk share at the Nasdaq Copenhagen to plummet 2% in early Tuesday trading.

Baltimore's biggest bridge collapses after being hit by a cargo ship, videos show. Mass casualty event declared.

  • Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early on Tuesday morning.
  • A livestream captured the moment a ship collided with one of the bridge's support beams.
  • Authorities are calling it a "mass casualty event" and say 20 people went into the water.

Insider Today

Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed on Tuesday morning after it was struck by a large container ship.

A video of the incident was posted early on Tuesday morning to X, formerly Twitter. In the video, the container ship the Dali is seen colliding with one of the bridge's support beams. Smoke is seen billowing from the ship before the bridge began crumbling.

"MAJOR BALTIMORE TRAFFIC ALERT: AVOID I-695 southeast corridor. I-695 Key Bridge collapse due to ship strike," the Maryland Transportation Authority said in an X post on Tuesday morning.

A representative for the Baltimore Police Department told ABC News that "at 1:35 a.m., Baltimore City police were notified of a partial bridge collapse, with workers possibly in the water, at the Francis Scott Key Bridge."

Emergency services teams, including divers and at least two helicopters, responded to the scene, per Baltimore County's police scanner in the hour and a half after the bridge's collapse.

Wes Moore, governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency early on Tuesday.

He said he was working to "quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," per the BBC.

In a news conference later in the day, Moore said that the crew on the ship notified authorities they had lost power.

Moore told reporters that the ship was moving at a "very rapid speed" and that the call to the authorities stopped a greater disaster from occurring, with cars redirected away from the bridge.

He also said the bridge was "fully up to code" and had no structural issues.

Paul Wiedefeld, Maryland's transportation secretary, told reporters that there were workers on the bridge at the time repairing potholes, and that six people were unaccounted for.

The White House said it was "closely monitoring" the situation, and that there was no indication of any nefarious intent.

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who remain missing as a result of this horrific incident," a spokesperson told BI in a statement.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said on X that he had offered the DOT's support to Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott.

The Baltimore Fire Department estimates that up to 20 people people went into the water, the BBC reported .

Baltimore Fire Department Chief James Wallace said at a press conference early Tuesday that two people had been recovered from the water. One refused service, while another was transported to a local trauma center "in very serious condition," he said.

The fire department had not made contact with the ship's captain yet, he said.

A livestream view of the area at around 3:00 a.m. local time showed the bridge's structure partially submerged in the harbor and in several pieces.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported .

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per ABC News.

Structural engineer Ian Firth told the BBC that the heavy ship would have struck the bridge support backed by many thousands of metric tons.

"The support is a very, relatively, flimsy structure when you look at it, it's a kind of trestle structure with individual legs," he told the outlet. "So, the bridge has collapsed simply as a result of this very large impact force."

Barbara Rossi, an engineering professor at the University of Oxford, told BI: "According to what I could see online, the bridge has received a huge impact force on one of its supporting structures."

"The impacting force must have been immense," she said.

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm. The firm confirmed in a statement on Tuesday morning that their vessel had struck one of the bridge's pillars, per TradeWinds .

"All crew members, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," read the firm's statement.

It had 22 crew aboard, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement .

According to Grace Ocean, the vessel was bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka when the accident took place.

Maersk, the ship's charterer, confirmed that vessel company Synergy Group operates the ship. Maersk's spokesperson told BI in a statement that the company is "horrified" by the events, and added that no Maersk employees were on board.

"We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy," it added.

As of Tuesday morning, authorities warned mariners and drone operators to avoid the waters and nearby airspace.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, Jr. said in an X post that the authorities "are closely monitoring the ongoing situation at the Key Bridge."

"Our prayers remain with all those impacted," Olszewski wrote.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in March 1977 as the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the MDTA .

It cost $60.3 million to build and is 10.9 miles long, per the MDTA.

"US, UK, Ukraine behind Crocus City Hall terror attack," claims Russian intelligence chief

In a major allegation amid the ongoing investigation into the Crocus City Hall attack, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) chief Alexander Bortnikov said on Tuesday that the United States, the United Kingdom and Ukraine are behind the terrorist attack, TASS reported. "We believe that this is true. In any case, we are now talking about the factual information we have. This is general information, but they have a long record of this sort," he said after participating in an enlarged meeting of the Prosecutor General's Office board, when asked whether the US, Britain and Ukraine were behind the terrorist attack.

Bortnikov further said that Ukraine has been trying to prove it is 'capable enough'. "What is it expected to do to demonstrate its capability? It is expected to carry out sabotage and terrorist acts in the rear. This is what both the chiefs of Ukraine's special services and the British special services are aiming at. US special services have repeatedly mentioned this, too," he said.

He pointed out that there was a large amount of information in the public space "showing that the West and Ukraine are out to cause greater harm to our country." "There have been drone strikes, strikes by uncrewed boats at sea, and incursions by groups of saboteurs and terrorist organizations into our territory," Bortnikov concluded.

Notably, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly been pointing towards an alleged Ukrainian connection in the terror attack. Earlier, Putin stressed that it needs to be answered who was waiting for the perpetrators of the attack on the Ukrainian side and why they headed exactly there.

"It is also necessary to answer the question - why the terrorists after committing the crime tried to head exactly to Ukraine, who was waiting for them there," he said. "It is clear that those who support the Kiev regime do not want to be accomplices of terror and sponsors of terrorism. But the questions are many, indeed." On the evening of March 22, a terrorist attack targeted the Crocus City Hall music venue in Krasnogorsk, Moscow Region, just over the Moscow city limits. The armed men opened fire and detonated explosives creating a massive euphoria and panic among the crowd.

The Islamic State (ISIS-K) had taken responsibility for the terror attack. At least 139 people have been killed and 182 suffered injuries in the attack, according to TASS.

A total of 11 individuals suspected of being involved in the terrorist attack have been apprehended, including four gunmen who were detained in the Bryansk Region, southwest of Moscow, as they attempted to seek refuge by crossing the nearby Ukrainian border. Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address that, according to preliminary information, the Ukrainian side had prepared "a window" in the border especially for the terrorists to cross undetected. He vowed to identify and punish all those who were behind the attack, TASS reported.

He also said that "radical Islamists" were responsible for last week's attack on a concert hall outside Moscow, but also suggested that Ukraine was also somehow involved, Al Jazeera reported. "We know that the crime was committed by the hands of radical Islamists, whose ideology the Islamic world itself has been fighting for centuries," Putin said. "This atrocity may be just a link in a whole series of attempts by those who have been at war with our country since 2014 with the hands of the neo-Nazi Kyiv regime."

Meanwhile, the White House has repeatedly said that the terrorist attack at the concert hall in Moscow was carried out by ISIS at Crocus, and there is "no evidence" that the Ukrainian government had anything to do with this attack. This was a terrorist attack that was conducted by ISIS. Mr. Putin understands that. He knows that very well. And look, there is absolutely no evidence that the government of Ukraine had anything to do with this attack," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Monday. (ANI)
