Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes onboard, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.

Automated interceptors optimize the trim at every speed to maintain ideal hydrodynamics for performance and efficiency, at the same time negating any lateral imbalance due to sidewinds or weight distribution. With the pilot’s peace of mind assured, the driving experience is simpler and more enjoyable.

The custom-installed Garmin electronics have been integrated to control and monitor every onboard system: from engines and alarms, to bilge and water discharge pumps, tank levels and engine room ventilation, right through to the sound system and the air conditioning units. The system can be accessed onboard from both the interior and exterior helm stations and, with the mobile app, remotely from a tablet or smartphone.

The Joystick acts as an analog for the yacht, offering intuitive, one-handed control in every situation. When the yacht is stopped, moving the Joystick forward or back, side to side, and twisting clockwise or counter-clockwise activates the engines to mimic that motion. It’s the easiest way to pull off precise maneuvers. When Joystick Driving is activated, the autopilot is immediately engaged. For a simple course correction, the pilot just needs to twist and release the joystick to change it by a fixed increment, or twist and hold to change it by by multiple increments.. The Autopilot keeps a forward course after the Joystick is released.

WHAT WE SAY

The Oyster 70 originates from the successful Oyster 68, with many new features added to the well proven sea keeping, performance and layout possibilities. Four of the Oyster 70s were built between 1996 and 1999. The lengthened hull and completely re-styled deck moulding provides a larger sunbathing area on the aft deck and allows for a larger lazarette locker, which can include a hydraulically extendable passerelle. The cockpit has been lowered in the hull which gives the possibility for lower coamings whilst keeping the protected environment and giving a sleeker appearance. There are two rigs. One is the sporty version of a fully battened mainsail giving 14% more sail area or, for easy handling, the other option is a rig with hydraulically operated in-mast furling.

The Fleet The Clipper 70

The third generation of one-design Clipper Race yachts debuted in the Clipper 2013-14 Race, proving to be faster and more dynamic than previous Clipper Race yachts, breaking speed records of 35 knots [OneDLL, Leg 6].

The eleven 70-foot yachts make up world’s largest matched fleet of ocean racing yachts. Designed by renowned naval architect Tony Castro, they are the shining jewel in the Clipper Race crown, perfectly adapted to this gruelling sailing challenge.

As with all lean, mean ocean racing yachts, the Clipper 70s are not for the faint-hearted. They are by design stripped of all luxuries. Race Crew must become experts at living in a confined space, managing all their kit and belongings as they settle into their new home.

The Clipper 70s feature twin helms, twin rudders, and a six-foot bowsprit, which allows the inclusion of three large asymmetric spinnakers and a suite of Yankee headsails, which combine to increase performance and boat speed. The new hull design produces better performance and control, especially in the light winds encountered near the Equator or between weather systems when crossing oceans. The design provides total control in the heaviest of conditions, ensuring not only high speeds, but safety too.

Today’s fleet is in stark comparison to the one which began the very first Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in 1996. Development ideas have been taken from both previous yacht designs: the Clipper 60s and Clipper 68s.

Hull & Exterior

The hull construction utilises lessons learnt from previous races, employing well-proven composite construction materials and methods. The hull and deck are of a sandwich construction using glass fibre, epoxy resins and structural foam. More commonly called Foam Reinforced Plastic (FRP), this construction method is light, stiff and proven to produce an incredibly strong and safe hull. Modern features have been included within the design of the hull which, along with the twin rudders, give improved directional stability when heeling, provide the helm with more control and achieve a faster ride.

The deck layout provides a well-designed environment for the crew to perform in. Eleven Harken winches, including the primaries controlled by twin three-speed coffee grinders, will swiftly bring the sails under control. Jammers and organisers have been located in easy-to-operate locations allowing crew to swiftly change settings. The mainsheet has been placed further aft in the cockpit, permitting a better level of communication between the crew as they undertake the various evolutions during tacks, gybes, hoists and drops. The aluminum mast towers 95-feet above the waterline and is rigged using tried and trusted materials and methods to further improve overall safety.

The boats are designed with a state-of-the-art HD fixed camera system to ensure that all the action on deck will be captured and used by media around the world to showcase the conditions faced by the crew during the race.

Interior Design

Below deck is a stripped-out interior with 24 bunks, a state-of-the-art navigation station and a simple galley. Watertight bulkheads and doors are strategically located to provide compartmentalisation in case of flooding.

The navigation station is placed towards the stern, providing a closer link between the navigator and helmsman. It is equipped with all the latest navigation electronics, navigation computers and cutting-edge satellite communications. This area of the yacht will provide the skipper and media crew member on board an ideal working space. GRIB weather files will be studied and courses mapped on the navigation computer while photos, diaries and videos will be edited and sent back to race headquarters using a powerful marine computer.

The engine and generator are mounted behind the companionway steps. Their mid-ship position brings increased stability and balance to the hull and also keeps all the ancillaries and electrical components in one maintenance-friendly area.

Centrally, just aft of the mast, sits a simple horseshoe-shaped galley, which feeds in to the communal area. This is where crew briefings and all-important meal times can take place. Crew accommodation runs from the stern forwards in a series of double bunks and stops short of a watertight bulkhead towards the front third of the boat. Ahead of this is a large compartment for storing sails, with the main hatch located directly above.

70 foot yacht guide: finding your perfect yacht.

The 70 foot yacht range often represents a demarcation in yachting. Vessels below this size range are often owner-operated whereas once yacht owners get into the 70 foot range, owners typically do not operate the yacht themselves. The 70 foot yacht is also just shy of what most consider to be the superyacht category. For instance,  Boat International  tracks superyacht sales and production data of yachts worldwide that are at least 24 meters in length (78-79 feet).

As the yacht size increases, the complexity of the purchase can also increase. While we often still begin with general use case questions such as what the yacht will be used for, how many guests should it accommodate and where do you plan to travel with the yacht, there are other important elements to consider when purchasing a 70 foot yacht. Considerations such as build quality, yacht type, cruising speed, propulsion options and more are all important elements to thoroughly examine.

Understanding the various yacht types is key to matching the right 70 foot yacht to your needs. Express yachts (can be referred to as express cruisers or sport cruisers) typically refer to yachts with a single deck above the hull and a living space below deck. These yachts often catch the eyes of onlookers as they are sleek and sporty.

Express yachts can be further grouped by looking at the hard top or enclosure. Typically the hard top express yacht either offers a semi-enclosure or full-enclosure for the operator. An open express yacht is different, however, in that it has maximum space for sun with little to no shade on deck. The open express can sometimes be referred to as a “Mediterranean” style yacht.

The flybridge or sedan bridge yacht refers to a yacht that includes an additional space above the main deck. This additional level can include seating and control station. Often times since the flybridge above is present, the main deck will have an enclosed space. The flybridge itself can be open air or enclosed.

Interior Layout

When yachts get into the 70 foot range, the interior layout can include a wide variety of options to suit your particular yachting lifestyle. Yachts in this range often have a spacious main deck salon with excellent seating, dining and entertaining spaces. Down below, the yachts will often have four or more cabins plus crew quarters. Newer yachts feature impressive full beam master bedrooms that come with remarkable spaciousness and the latest amenities. Quite often, a flybridge includes additional seating and control station.

Finishes and interior designs can vary widely depending on the model and age of the yacht. Commissioning a new yacht build of course means that owners can provide input and select particular finishes and features to meet their needs and tastes.

Considerations When Buying A 70 Foot Yacht

If you’re relatively new to yachting, it can be good to get some experience. Taking time to  charter a yacht  in various destinations can help you narrow down what yacht you wish to buy. Getting familiar through actual use of different yacht types can be very helpful. What features and amenities are important to you? What kind of crew do you anticipate needing? Are you looking for a smaller, more easy-to-operate yacht or are you looking for the most luxurious yachting experience while cruising longer distances? Experience is truly the best way to get closer to accurate answers to these questions.

Understanding your estimated budget for a yacht purchase is a crucial element in narrowing down your options. While understanding that there is always a bigger and more expensive yacht, identify a price range that you are comfortable with while also factoring in crew, maintenance and operating expenses.

Once you identify the yacht type and price range, with the assistance of a yacht broker, you can begin identifying potential options. If considering used yachts, buyers will always encounter the trade-off between age and size. A newer and smaller boat can often cost the same or more than a larger vessel with more years. Of course, newer boats may have less maintenance and upkeep costs while also providing updated technology and features. The Aquila 70 can top out at 27 knots (with the optional engines) yet still cover long ranges at slower speeds. Power and maneuverability come from Volvo Penta inboards coupled with joystick control. Carbon fiber reinforcements keep weight down while adding to the yacht’s strength. The high bridge-deck clearance allows for even more comfort underway and improved speeds. 

For your relaxation and entertainment needs, the Aquila 70 has massive spaces designed with European flair that are bright, inviting, and welcoming including a 27’ wide master suite. Versatile interior layouts, along with rich wood finishes, soft fabrics, smart appliances, designer furnishings, incredible headroom, and panoramic windows make your experience onboard even better. 

Outdoor areas receive just as much attention.
