We wanted a unique all in one ceremony and reception, we were exploring downtown when we came across yacht starship we looked at each other and thought “how cool would it be to get married on the water”. From the moment we contacted the boat for a meeting it was a amazing experience. We first met with Chris D to talk about the details, guest count, date and our vision once that was in place and contract was signed 3 month out we were contacted by Joey O (our day of coordinator). We scheduled an in person meeting to walk through the yacht and decide seating arrangements and table placements and talk time line. Every time I reached out with a question or concern I had an answer right away. Honestly this takes the stress out of wedding planning they were so helpful with everything. We were able to do a rehearsal the day before on our boat as well as bring on any décor that we would need to have set up & Joey made sure it was done and reflected our vision. Our wedding was Friday, June 16th and was flawless. We are still getting compliments on the amazing food and service by the waitstaff. Pricing will vary greatly, depending on the size of the boat, the style, and the region where you’re booking. Yacht and charter boat weddings may only require a fee for use of the vessel, while a cruise ship wedding requires paying for the cruise , along with fees specific to your wedding.

Tips for Yacht Weddings

A wedding reception on a yacht provides the ultimate view for a great celebration! You can choose to either host your ceremony elsewhere and then board the boat, or plan for both your ceremony and reception on the water.

To find the ideal yacht for your wedding, think about guest list size first. “Keep in mind that many states have maritime regulations prohibiting the rental of yachts for events or guest counts past a certain number,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Contacting the local maritime office is a good place to start for suggestions on how to charter a yacht. They may have recommendations for finding a yacht unless you have your own or have a connection to one.”

Once you know that your guest list count is in line with area regulations for a yacht, it’s crucial to consider space to guest ratio as well. Are there enough restrooms to accommodate your group? Is there enough elbow room to allow for a great guest experience?

You’ll also want to check if the yacht has appropriate kitchen facilities for your culinary team to create the perfect menu for your reception, along with space for other necessary rentals.

Tips for Charter Boat Weddings

If you’re hoping to charter a boat for your wedding, keeping size in mind is crucial here, too. Be sure to choose a boat that can accommodate your guest list and your specific needs. It's also important to double-check that the boat you plan to charter will fit the aesthetic and type of reception you're hoping for.

If you’re chartering a boat, insurance will also be required. “Talk to your insurance carrier about your personal policy and what the needs are to cover the event, the boat owner, and your guests,” says Nick and Aleah Valley.

It’s also important to consider the timing when chartering a boat. “Most charter boats have a very specific timeframe for when they can depart a port or marina, whether it's based on tides, locks, or marina rules, so this can dictate your event timeline,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. They suggest building a buffer into your day-of timeline so guests arrive and board the boat at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure time. This will give guests time to get settled on the boat, and you can welcome them with happy hour drinks and snacks to kick off the celebration.

Tips for Cruise Weddings

Planning a ceremony or a wedding reception on a cruise ship means you’re on a much bigger boat. Typically, that also means there may be other guests onboard that aren’t part of your wedding. If privacy is important to you, be sure to ask the cruise ship’s planning team what your ceremony or reception space will look like, and what your options are for keeping it private.

Depending on the cruise, you may not be able to get married on open water at all. Legally, you may be required to choose to either celebrate your nuptials before the ship departs, or you can choose to say “I do” at the port of one of the cruise’s destinations. Working with the right planner will ensure you’re following the proper legal guidance for a cruise wedding or cruise wedding reception.

“Keep in mind the guest experience and the logistics of what can take place on a cruise,” suggests Nick and Aleah Valley. It’s important to check if you can have events at your leisure, or if you will have to stick to the cruise ship’s strict timeline and events.

How to Keep Guests Comfortable on the Water

While a boat wedding may be dreamy for you and your partner, especially if you’re used to being on the water, it may be tricky for some of your guests.

“ Seasickness can happen quickly, especially when guests are drinking,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Have a solid plan, and if you have an opportunity, pass out seasickness patches to your guests the day before your event so they can be prepared for being on the boat.”

Consider putting together welcome bags that might include bug spray, water bottles, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Another helpful option? Put out a big basket of hats and fans, along with a well-stocked station of snacks and water. It’s important that guests stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion.  

Questions to Ask Before Booking a Boat for Your Wedding

• Will there be enough space for our guest list?
• Is there air conditioning on board?
• Is there a maintenance crew that can assist with potential mechanical issues?
• What is the galley kitchen’s capacity for creating a meal?
• Is there a refrigerated place to store our cake? Will it fit?
• Can we incorporate our own décor?
• How many life preservers are on board?
• Is there a specific timeline we need to follow?
• What insurance is required for use?

After ironing these questions out, you'll be ready to sail off into the sunset as a married couple!

Getting married at sea means you won’t have a legally binding marriage license, we recommend having a civil ceremony at home, then having your celebratory ceremony in your boat rental and destination of choice. With that said getting married on land, doesn’t necessarily mean “land”, you can still have your wedding ceremony aboard a vessel, as long as it’s docked in a port. You will, however, need to follow the port's requirements for such a wedding. If you really want to get married at sea, it may be possible to obtain your legally binding marriage license at your destination. Although, it’s probably not ideal since you’ll still need to have it recognized by your local government.

It’s worth noting for a yacht wedding, you should find a captain and a boat that is legally allowed to officiate your onboard wedding. Whilst not forgetting to check your local laws to make sure that a wedding on a boat will be legally recognized when you’re on dry land.

• Plan your romantic route

So you’ve picked your venue, the time, date, and location you plan to get married. Next, you should consider whether you want the boat to just sail out into the ocean or if there’s a preferred route of scenic views. The venue you have chosen will most likely be the main decider of the route you can have, as most cruise ship routes are already planned out! 

• Experienced event planners are a must

We highly recommend working with an event planner if you have chosen to plan your wedding on a yacht, charter, or riverboat, as these vessels tend to be privately hired. A wedding or event planner who has experience in organizing an on-water wedding will know the best caterers and entertainments you can hire and accommodate for you. 

• Consider your entertainment and activity options

Whether you are planning on having a band play live music or a DJ at your wedding reception, when booking your entertainment it is important to remember that they will need to be on board the vessel before you set sail. Couples planning weddings too frequently don't get responses to invitations. Do they send a “missed RSVP” card? Do they give a courtesy call? Or do nothing? We’ve gathered expert advice.

When Nishma Mistry, a South Asian Atlanta-based woman, planned her wedding, she said the guest list included hundreds, and the events lasted for days. She also said she had to contact many on her guest list to confirm who was coming to what event. 

“I had to call everyone and ask, ‘Are you coming?’ It was such a waste of time,” she told People magazine . “You have a list the size of your arm to get done and you’re trying to appease everyone. People don’t understand the importance of responding back.”

Mistry, a wedding planning expert and creator of Asian Bride Sorority, was thinking of her own experience more than a decade ago and the hordes of other couples frustrated by unanswered RSVPs when she created the “Missed RSVP” card, which wedding hosts can send out after their RSVP deadline has passed. 

“We’re sorry you can’t make it to our wedding. Our RSVP deadline has passed, and unfortunately, you did not respond. We would have loved to have you attend, but final numbers have now been turned in, and your presence will be missed,” the card reads. 

While Mistry’s card has received a mixed response online, with many claiming it’s “harsh,” her card does beg the question: What is the etiquette around RSVPs?

With graduations kicking off in less than two months and spring weddings starting to unfold, the next few months through the end of summer will be filled with significant celebrations, with hosts potentially waiting to get their RSVP answers. 

There are many reasons for failing to respond to an RSVP on time. It’s a prevalent, albeit rude, bad habit. However, as Mistry and many others can attest, not doing so can throw off a person’s planning of a large-scale event. A couple can expect roughly 60% to 85% of their guest list to attend , meaning they can also expect to go hunting for a few RSVPs. While some may not agree with Mistry’s method, nearly all agree some communication from the host is required when an RSVP doesn’t receive a response. 

According to one of America’s most well-known and trusted sources on etiquette, the late Emily Post , hosts “have no choice” but to reach out in some way when they do not receive an RSVP. However, Post suggests a friendly reminder call to confirm.

Her official thought, “It is perfectly polite, however, for hosts to call friends to ask if they plan to attend.”

If guests miss the RSVP deadline and want to attend, they should reach out to the host and confirm they can still attend. Showing up without RSVPing or reaching out is essentially showing up unannounced and could put the host in a really bad spot.

Many more couples take their invitations online or point to a website on their paper invitations these days. Wedding websites are a great way to communicate details en masse, give updates, share registries, and seamlessly collect RSVPs all in one place. From Squarespace to Joy, there are many different sources for wedding websites, each with its own nuanced features. 

While efficient, modern, and highly organized, taking things online isn’t a cure-all. According to the wedding site Inside Weddings , some downsides can include older generations struggling with the technology. Another could be that if you don’t send a paper invitation or save the date card, some guests could forget about the event because a link is too “out of sight, out of mind.”

When planning a wedding there are many factors to consider. Who will you invite? Where will you tie the knot? Have you found your dream dress? But have you considered the environmental impact of your day? 

It is becoming increasingly common for prospective brides and grooms to not only consider what the day will look and feel like, but what hosting a typically large group of family and friends will have on the environment. 

Though a destination wedding is a style that you would traditionally associate with a carbon footprint, there are always ways to reduce the environmental impact of your UK-based wedding. We might not all know where to start in terms of creating a more eco-conscious day but luckily we have an expert on hand to give us the 411. 

Speaking with ethical jewellery brand Sacet , Zoe Burke, a leading wedding expert and editor of Hitched.co.uk , tells us if you are factoring sustainability into your big day, you're not alone. 

"Our latest National Wedding Survey has shown that couples are increasingly prioritising sustainability and eco-friendly elements for their weddings," the expert says. "A quarter of weddings last year included sustainable decor or eco-friendly elements, up from 19% the previous year." This demonstrates a growing awareness among couples regarding the long-term impact of their wedding choices."

She says to start by choosing a venue that isn't going to be a long car drive or even a flight away from where you are based. "An important thing to consider is the location of the venue. A venue that’s far for you and your guests to travel to will ultimately result in your wedding having a higher carbon footprint, as more fuel will be required to transport you," Zoe tells us. 

"You'll want to find a venue with a track record of prioritising sustainability or which is sustainably accredited, as they will have access to sustainably focused suppliers who can make suggestions and support across everything from catering to decor."

On the subject of decor, it can be tempting to ship in all your table settings from cheap online sites. Though, of course, you work to your means in terms of budget when planning such an expensive occasion, Zoe says that hiring products can be a way to create execute a more eco-conscious day without breaking the bank, or leaving yourself with a load of place settings to store or throw away at the end of the day.

"While renting certain things like venues and decor and entertainment is entirely normal, the number of additional elements newlyweds can hire or borrow these days, such as fashion and accessories, is growing by the day, the weddings editor explains. 

There are so many great wedding businesses out there that hire out everything you can think of, from the tableware for your wedding breakfast to the decorations for your party. By hiring these items, you’re giving more life to something that might just be discarded if it was bought new for a single purpose, and you’re supporting small businesses, too. It’s a win-win!”

Location, location, location

When you are searching for a venue which has sustainable credentials, be careful not to go to far afield if you are committed to a green wedding. "Guest experience is the biggest factor for couples when wedding planning," Zoe notes. 

"The majority of couples last year (68%) made sure that their big day was easy for guests to get to by choosing a destination no more than 30 miles away from their own base. With less distance to travel, you reduce the carbon footprint of guests travelling to and from the event. 

Rent your look

When it comes to the dress that most brides will only wear once, why not reduce the environmental impact of your dress? "Search volume for the term 'wedding dress hire' has grown by 50% since last year, and 'hire wedding dress' has grown by nearly a third (30%)," the expert tells us.
