A tiny coffee shop tucked within the old Wollongong harbour light house. Seating is outside and quaint. Unpretentious and totally great little coffee haven. Pick the weather.

This small cafe has one of the best locations in Wollongong, in the middle of the boat harbour. A perfect location for a quiet coffee while enjoying the location.

Finally made it to Yachties and had a great lunch. The location is perfect and nice and quiet. Great coffee and granola. Coming back soon for the burgers.

or having more than just coffee on offer if they even bother to open. Tried many times since they put up posters around harbour, but only time they were open, they only had coffee and didn’t give a flying fish for an excuse.

I used to really loved this place....simple, quaint and in a great location. However..this morning everything changed. We ordered 3 coffees. There was only one person working the cafe. So things were slow (on a Sunday morning). We received our coffees but only 2. Not... a big problem. However the coffees were absolutely undrinkable.....tasted like milky water. No coffee taste whatsover. The only way I can explain this is that the owner was reusing the coffee grinds to make multiple coffees. ( to speed things up or to cut corners). Very sad. Will never go back More

The service was really bad. Waited 25 mins for two takeaway coffees only to realise they misplaced the order. The food menu is also very limited.

Food was amazing but the vegan burger was just out of this world. The staff was very friendly and down to earth. Not only was the atmosphere cosy and relaxing but the view of the water really topped of this gorgeous Easter Sunday. I definitely... recommend trying it out for yourself!! :) More

The heat was hot. The sun was sunny. My partner and I headed down to the beach for a swim, only to find everyone else had done the same. The heat wave haze had fully set in. We continued our journey toward the lighthouse when... there upon the wharf stood a beacon of light and hope. It wasn't a lighthouse. It wasn't a boat. It was Yachties cafe. Perfectly located on the waters edge, there is no place more authentically local and welcoming than Yachties. We were soon relieved of our heat wave haze not only by an ice cold Asahi but also by the two wonderful personalities behind the counter. Thank you Yachties, we will be back! More

Ideally situated in the middle of Wollongong Harbour, this café boasts unbeatable views. Chef Yann Couvreur — the renowned French pastry chef known for Instagram-worthy creations — has debuted the first U.S. location of his wildly popular Yann Couvreur Café in Wynwood this past weekend, marking the 17th location of the restaurant worldwide.

The café goes beyond pastry offerings, serving breakfast, lunch, and brunch daily. The menu features a variety of dishes, including Tartine Saumon with smoked salmon and lemon cream cheese on toasted multigrain sourdough, a brioche-based tuna melt, and a table-side Niçoise salad, among others. Of course, the baked goods stand out, like Baguette et Beurre and caramelized French toast, and desserts such as the chef’s take on the Mille Feuilles. Couvreur’s favorite dish also appears: The decadent “Oeuf à la Coque,” soft-boiled eggs accompanied by brioche toast and caviar.

The Wynwood café spans 2,500 square feet and was designed by French architect Charles Zana. Its interior features warm-toned natural materials like travertine and birch. The space includes an open kitchen and countertops made of gold travertine alongside Italian ceramic walls and lighting fixtures inspired by cake molds.

Couvreur, a Paris native, honed his skills under the tutelage of renowned chefs across prestigious restaurants like Le Trianon Palace and Park Hyatt, Paris. He struck out on his own with his first pastry shop in Paris’s 10th district in 2015, leading to a global expansion that now includes locations in France, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

Couvreur — who also has an outpost inside food hall Julia & Henry — plans to open another location in Coconut Grove and Aventura neighborhoods before expanding to other parts of the country, including New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Welcome to the Scene Report, a column in which Eater captures the vibe of a notable New York restaurant at a specific moment in time. Read other scene reports here , here , here , and here .

In the late ’90s, I could ill afford to eat in fancy restaurants, but I made an exception for Café Boulud . Located on East 76th just off Central Park in the old Surrey Hotel , it was a cozy countrified place where one of the city’s most renowned French chefs — in the days when being from France counted for something — recalled his youth working in his family’s restaurant near Lyon.

The compact menu was divided into four parts, each offering two or three appetizers and an equal number of entrees. One part channeled the chef’s culinary roots in France, another focused on seasonal dishes, a third on the newly popular local sourcing, while a fourth voyaged to a far-off global cuisine that changed from time to time. The menu itself was a romantic notion, and I eagerly anticipated ordering from it.

A couple of months ago, Café Boulud reopened in the common rooms of a luxury apartment building at 100 East 63rd Street, right at the corner of Park Avenue. The towering lobby is dominated by gray stonework, with an elegant barroom and another restaurant ( Maison Barnes , specializing in large format dishes) up an arched stairway to the left, and the main dining room on the right, all very Hogwarts.

The vibe : Café Boulud’s dining room is more formal than the previous one. In the middle rises a statuesque flower arrangement, and the white-clothed tables march on either side along the windows that provide glorious natural light. Walking in at 6:00 p.m. with no reservation, a friend and I were able to secure a window table, but within a half hour the place filled up.

Some women wore furs, while their dates sported tuxes, as if on the way to an awards ceremony or other society function. There were also extended families with young children — at one table near us, a nanny made an appearance early in the meal to drop off the kids. They immediately began spilling things. Adolescents around the room wore prep-school sweaters from Dalton and Chapin.

The food : The menu retains the excitement under executive chef, Romain Paumier. A two-course meal is priced at $95, and a three-course at $125, the latter featuring a dessert in addition to an appetizer and main course. But first there was a warm bread basket with sliced nut bread and pointy miniature baguettes, served with a quenelle of truffle-dusted butter. Next came an amuse bouche of lemony foam in a crunchy globe with a tidbit of what looked like prosciutto on top.

For our two courses, we resolved to order one dish from each of the four sections. From the La Tradition menu we picked ris de veau “Du Barry,” nodding to a classic cauliflower soup . Here the dish is turned on its head by not being a soup and and instead being a display of ginger-glazed sweetbreads, which sit atop a cauliflower steak, also decorated with little curlicues of raw cauliflower. If you have any bread left, use it on the veal demi-glace.

From the Le Potager (“the garden”) menu, we picked a chicory salad of colorful, crunchy greens including puntarelle and Castelfranco radicchio in a blood-orange dressing sprinkled with candied walnuts. I’ve seen a similar salad on other winter menus, but here it’s one-upped with a dollop of herbed goat cheese. Once again, bread is invaluable for mopping the cheese, so ask for more.

Next we picked two entrees. From the La Saison menu, came medium-rare strips of duck breast topped with a tart rhubarb puree planted in collard greens dotted with einkorn berries, while a black garlic jus welled up all around. It was quite a lovely combination, but with perhaps two many elements on the plate, so deciding what stick your fork into next was a challenge.

At the old place, my favorite menu section was always Le Voyage, where the destination might be Spain or Brazil, but was more often in Southeast Asia (and remember, this was when rival French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten was exploring Thai food at Vong). Duo de porc “Chiang Mai” is a deconstructed Thai red curry, carrots and all, placing a pair of pork loin cylinders in a bright red sauce with no coconut milk in sight. Black plums and crisp and squishy lardons are arrayed all around.

What to drink : Lots of action in the mainly French by-the-glass wine list, priced at $18 to $55, higher for some Champagnes, via sommelier Victoria Taylor. My favorite was an organic chenin blanc from Saumur in the Loire Valley. At $18 it was a bargain, peachy and lemony. For its polar opposite among heavily oaked and saturated reds, try the Barbaresco from Giuseppe Nada ($28).

Tip: There is one off-menu item that you shouldn’t miss: A paper cone of fries sprinkled with grated cheese. This being a restaurant with an exacting French chef at the helm, you can bet they are some very good fries.

LOGAN SQUARE — Middle Brow Bungalow is offering morning hours again after a roughly two-year pause — and the brewpub is debuting new breakfast items, too.

Middle Brow Bungalow, 2840 W. Armitage Ave. is open beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday-Friday, with plans to eventually open early on Tuesdays too, co-owner Pete Ternes said.

The restaurant stopped offering weekday morning hours and lunch service because various staff had children, and combined with holidays and events, the team didn’t have the bandwidth to maintain those hours, Ternes said. But with more staff recently hired, Middle Brow Bungalow was able to bring back its morning service, he said.

A new menu of pastries, pizzas and sandwiches is also available, thanks to Middle Brow’s new head baker, Tucker Critchfield, Ternes said.

The goal with the menu is to offer items that are convenient for customers working remotely from the restaurant, Ternes said.

Coffee cakes, morning buns, galettes and bostock are among the new morning items. Bostock is a French pastry made with twice-baked brioche toast that’s topped with marshmallows and fermented banana jam — “beautiful and incredible,” Ternes said. Galette, another French pastry, is topped with a sweet or savory filling.

New lunch items include slices of Sicilian-style pizza: thrice-baked, fluffy, square pizza with toppings that rotate weekly.

Sandwich specials will also rotate weekly, though the muffuletta hoagie will stay on the menu for a while due to its popularity, Ternes said.

The expanded menu also includes a smaller version of the restaurant’s popular kale salad, a marinated olive salad and more dips to go with freshly baked focaccia.

And don’t worry: Middle Brow’s donuts in rotating flavors are still on the menu as well. They’re available on the weekends starting at 9 a.m.

“The weekend donuts are a special part of it. They tend to sell out every weekend,” Ternes said.

Middle Brow’s owners, who regularly partner with other local businesses , are also getting ready to sell coffee aged in wine barrels made in partnership with Four Letter Word Coffee, 3022 W. Diversey Ave. The coffee will have a subtle wine flavor thanks to the barrel aging process, Ternes said.

Middle Brow’s new morning hours are 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekends. The restaurant reopens for dinner at 4-10 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 4-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 4-9 p.m. Sundays.

Sam's Club Introduces New Fan-Picked Tuxedo Chocolate Bar Cake Sundae

Sam's Club's food court (known as its café) is home to some delicious, unique items like its Pizza and Cinnamon-Sugar Pretzels, Icees, and notably, its sundaes. Sam's is known for rotating in some seasonal and limited-edition sundaes, and let's just say—they never miss. From Black Tie Brownie Sundaes and Mint Chocolate Brownie Sundaes last fall to a Birthday Cake Sundae to celebrate the store's 40th birthday , Sam's sundaes are always elaborate, and always delicious.

Last month, Sam's Club posted to its social media asking fans to pick its next café menu addition. Fans had a choice between three sundaes: the Tuxedo Chocolate Bar Cake Sundae (a vanilla ice cream sundae with Tuxedo Chocolate Bar Cake and caramel syrup), the Chantilly Bar Cake and Fruit Sundae (a vanilla ice cream sundae with Sweet Fruit Chantilly Bar Cake and a mixed berry topping), and the Apple Turnover Sundae (a vanilla ice cream sundae with apple turnover pieces and caramel syrup).

The fans have spoken, and (unsurprisingly) chocolate came out on top. The Tuxedo Chocolate Bar Cake Sundae will officially join Sam's Club Café menus for the entire month of April, starting on April 1. The Tuxedo Bar Cake is a specialty of Sam's Club's bakery , and features layers of chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, cream cheese filling, with a rich dark and milk chocolate ganache on top. Reviewers call the cake "melt in your mouth" good, "outstanding," and "the most delicious cake [they] ever had."

As teased, the sundae version features pieces of that cake, swirled in with layers of vanilla ice cream and rich caramel sauce. This sundae is only available in cafés until April 30, so try it while you can, because this is one limited-edition treat you don't want to miss.

Foreign stereotypes of French restaurants tend to paint the service as slow. But hordes of Parisian waiters proved just the opposite this weekend as they hurtled down the streets of the capital with full trays in hand.

Thousands of spectators gathered to watch more than 200 servers compete in Sunday's "Course des Cafés," the newly-revived version of a century-old race.

Waiters and waitresses traversed a 1.2-mile loop starting and ending at City Hall, suited up in traditional crisp white shirts, black trousers, neatly tied aprons and in some cases, bow ties. They each carried a tray loaded with a croissant, a full water glass and an empty coffee cup.

The goal: Cross the finish line as quickly as possible without running, spilling or carrying the tray with two hands at the same time.

"Through the streets of the Marais, you will have to slalom with agility, avoid obstacles with a skill worthy of Opera dancers and demonstrate speed without haste," said Eau de Paris , the city's public water company and sponsor of the event. "It will not only be about speed but above all balance."

Judges at the finish line inspected contestants' trays, docking points for sloshed water, broken dishes and empty glasses, according to the New York Times , which reported that most people finished in under 20 minutes.

Men's winner Samy Lamrous finished in 13 minutes and 30 seconds, while women's winner Pauline Van Wymeersch clocked in at 14 minutes and 12 seconds.

Aside from bragging rights, each won a medal and a night's stay in a fancy hotel and two tickets to the Olympic opening ceremony this summer, the Associated Press reported .

Thirty-four-year-old Van Wymeersch, who has worked in the industry since age 16, told the AP that she couldn't imagine doing anything other than waiting tables, calling it "part of my DNA."

"I love it as much as I hate it," she said, noting the weekends and holidays she has lost as well as the experience she's gained. "I have been shaped, in life and in the job, by the bosses who trained me and the customers, all of the people I have met."

A celebration of Paris café culture returns after more than a decade

Cafés and restaurants are a major part of Parisian history and culture. In fact, the modern restaurant has its roots in the broth-heavy "bouillon shops" of 18th-century Paris, says Maryann Tebben, a professor who specializes in French food and identity at Bard College at Simon's Rock.

Tebben told NPR in a phone interview that the race reflects pride in that long tradition and in the quality of French service overall. Many waiters work in the industry — and even at the same establishment — for decades, following a strict set of best practices.

"The café exists since the 17th century, so the café waiter exists since then too," she said. "And there's a lot of pride in the traditional ways. But as it does enter into the modern age, it's still alive and well."

The café race — which was originally called the Course des Garçons de Café (café waiters race) — originated in Paris in 1914, celebrating what Eau de Paris calls the "know-how and skill of waiters."

"On the big day, glasses and bottles placed on their trays, napkins in the fold of their arms, the waiters, in white jackets, black pants and bow ties, competed on the boulevards, to the cheers of the public," it said.

The race was held regularly in the decades that followed. And similar races have taken off in other French cities, like Marseille and Nice, and beyond, including in Hong Kong , Buenos Aires and San Francisco . Some towns in the United Kingdom have put their own spin on the event, CNN reports , swapping out the coffee and croissant for a pint of beer.

Paris paused the race in 2011, reportedly due to budget constraints.

The city is home to some 150,000 cafes and restaurants, according to a 2023 report , but Tebben says that number has shrunk over time, especially as young people increasingly gravitate towards places with fast service and strong Wifi.

Given economic and political realities, she says she's not surprised that the race faded away — or that city officials decided to bring it back this year, ahead of the summer Olympics.

"The way [the French] do sports is a little different, and everything in Paris is a little bit more elegant," she said, noting that France doesn't have the same sort of public gym culture as the U.S. "So I love with this race that you can't run, you have to walk. You can't hold the tray with both hands, you can switch it from hand to hand. I just think that's a very French rendering of ... an athletic contest, with all the style and the sort of panache of what the French are about, especially in Paris."

Meanwhile, the summer Olympics are getting closer

Eau de Paris contributed the equivalent of more than $100,000 to cover the cost of the trays, aprons, coffee and croissants, according to the Guardian .

The water company says the race has the same objectives as before — "to promote sport and French excellence in service" — with a new focus on reducing plastic waste.

It's part of the utility's larger campaign against single-use plastic water bottles, which includes encouraging restaurants and businesses to pledge to refill patrons' water bottles with tap water for free.

"In a city that is about to host the greenest Olympic Games in history and two days before World Water Day, it is important that even our oldest traditions take a step towards a greener future," it said.

Tebben says she's glad to see the race return, and, alongside the Olympics, hopes it will help re-energize Paris's café spirit, which she describes as a sort of "eternal pleasure."

The Olympics are a chance for France to showcase its innovations, from environmental initiatives to culinary fusion, Tebben says. To her, the race shows how old traditions can be modernized, without being scrapped altogether.

"They're proud of it and they're not going to try to change it because the world has changed," she said. "There's some comfort in that too, that it's still going on: Waiters are still there, doing what they've always done and doing it properly."
