How much should you tip crew on a superyacht charter?

It's customary to tip the crew at the end of your luxury yacht charter holiday. So what is the accepted tipping amount? And how should gratuity be given? If you're confused about tipping protocol on board a charter superyacht, read our tipping guide...

What is the accepted amount to tip?

In general, brokers advise tipping between 5 to 20 per cent of the base charter fee, depending on the yacht and the location. It is usually towards the lower end of that scale in the Med and higher in the US and Caribbean .

Are there any official guidelines?

In the 2000s, problems started to arise when generous charterers began to tip 25 per cent or more. The situation became difficult when crews started expecting large tips and were disappointed —sometimes audibly — with lesser amounts.

As a result, the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) issued tipping policy guidelines, which listed 5-15 per cent as the customary range.

These guidelines now seem to have taken hold as the accepted norm and also provide a charterer with a reference point beforehand. By asking your broker if the yacht supports the MYBA recommended guidelines, you’ll know what is expected.

Do I have to tip in cash?

Generally, tips are given in cash to the captain but there are other methods of tipping too. Maggie Vale from Churchill Yacht Partners explains: "If there are Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) funds remaining after the charter, I advise my clients to leave this with the captain, as he is already holding it, then add any amount they would like to that."

"Alternatively, clients can wire gratuity ahead for the broker to hold in escrow to avoid carrying a large amount of cash. After the charter is over, the client will let me know how much to release to the crew (based on any leftover APA) and I can wire the difference back to the client," advises Vale.

How should I decide what percentage to give?

When deciding on what percentage of the base rate to give you should take into account that a charter crew normally works 16-18 hour days from dawn to midnight. As in all aspects of life, a tip should be proportional to the service you have received.

Is there a tipping etiquette?

Yes, all tips should be given directly to the captain so that they can divide the amount out between all the crew. It is important to remember that there may be crew that have worked just as hard as others but have been less visible during your trip.

Can I tip some crew more than others?

Although it maybe be tempting to try and specifically recognise a member of crew that has gone out of their way to make your trip special this is not advised.  All the crew work as a team and therefore should be rewarded as such. Regardless of the size of the tip, it will be distributed across the entire crew anyway.

How Much Should You Tip on Your Yacht Charter

Stress-free tipping: how to determine tip for your crew.

Tipping banner

How much should you tip on a private yacht charter ? And how do you leave a tip for the crew? That’s something almost every yacht charter guest wonders. According to the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) tipping guidelines, the general rule is to tip between 10% and 15% of your weekly charter fee, excluding running expenses and taxes. With that in mind, here are some other tipping “rule” for your charter: Let the captain decide who gets how much.

On your last day on your yacht, it’s customary to put your entire tip in an envelope and hand it directly to your captain. If your trip was wonderful (and why wouldn’t it be?), include a personal note, tell the captain how wonderful the crew was, and leave it to the captain’s discretion on how to split up the tip. Treat everyone equally. Many crew members are involved in the operation of your yacht, from stewardesses refreshing your cocktails, to the deckhands setting up the slide for you. While it may be tempting to leave forward-facing members a more generous tip, it’s not recommended. Remember, the crew works as a team, and it’s important to reward them as a team.

Let your destination be your guide

Tipping rules change by destination. As a general rule, a 10% to 15% tip is customary when chartering in the Mediterranean , while a 15% to 20% tip is more common in the Caribbean .

Your tip should be proportional to the service you received

Ultimately, it’s up to you on how much to tip. Most guests, though, base it on the quality of service. But remember: Most crew members are working 16- to 18-hour days, and a tip rewards them for all that hard work and service. If you have questions about how much to tip, consult with your charter broker – brokers can help you understand what’s customary.

How Much Do You Tip on a Yacht Charter?

Are you planning a luxury yacht charter? Now the question, How much do you tip on a yacht charter? The tip is an important aspect to consider as tipping is a common practice in the yachting industry to show appreciation for the crew’s hard work and exceptional service. However, there is often confusion surrounding the proper amount to tip and the etiquette involved as this can change per-region.

In this article, we will talk about the factors to consider when calculating the tip amount, explore the role of the crew in a yacht charter, discuss best practices for tipping, examine regional differences in tipping etiquette, provide tips for communicating with the crew about gratuity, highlight the importance of recognizing exceptional service, debunk common myths about tipping, offer etiquette tips for private yacht excursions, and explain how to factor in service charges and fees when tipping. Let’s uncover the customary gratuity practices for yacht charters and ensure fair compensation for crew members.

Calculating the Tip Amount: How Much Do You Tip on a Yacht Charter?

When determining the appropriate amount to tip on a yacht charter, several factors come into play. The level of service, overall experience, and the rate the charter went out for are all a good baseline for determining the amount . If the crew provided exceptional service that went above and beyond, it is appropriate to consider a higher tip.

Other factors to consider include the crew’s performance, professionalism, and attentiveness throughout the journey. Remember, tipping is voluntary, but it is a gesture that can make a significant impact on the crew members’ morale and livelihood.

Furthermore, the geographical location of the yacht charter can also influence the tipping etiquette. In some regions, such as the Mediterranean, tipping practices may differ from those in the Caribbean or other parts of the world. It’s essential to research the customary tipping norms of the specific area where you are chartering the yacht to ensure your gratuity aligns with local expectations.

Another aspect to consider when calculating the tip amount is the complexity of the charter itself. If your itinerary involves intricate logistics, special requests, or last-minute changes that the crew handled with grace and efficiency, it may warrant a higher tip as a token of appreciation for their flexibility and dedication to ensuring your satisfaction throughout the journey.

Different Locations and Tipping Etiquette

In the yacht charter industry, tipping customs can vary significantly by region.

In the Caribbean, the standard for tipping is typically set between 15% to 20% of the total charter fee . UC Yacht Charters, offering charters in the entire chain of Caribbean Islands, ensures that guests are well-informed about these practices to enhance their overall experience.

Conversely, in the Mediterranean, the expected tipping range is slightly lower, usually around 10% to 15% of the charter cost . This difference reflects a more reserved European approach to gratuities, where excellent service is also highly valued, but the cultural norms dictate a more moderate expression of appreciation through tips. Oftentimes, the crew Salaries are appropriately reflected to account for the common 10-15% gratuities, in comparison to the Caribbean standard.

These nuanced differences underscore the importance of understanding local customs and recommendations to ensure that expressions of gratitude are both appropriate and appreciated, enhancing the overall charter experience! We take pride in educating guests on these regional nuances, reinforcing our commitment to providing an informed and seamless luxury yachting adventure.

Understanding the Role of Crew in a Yacht Charter

The crew plays the most vital role in ensuring a memorable and enjoyable yacht charter experience. Each crew member contributes specific skills and expertise to create a seamless and luxurious voyage. From the captain crafting custom itineraries and ensuring safety, to the chef preparing extraordinary meals, and the stewardesses maintaining cleanliness and serving beverages, every crew member plays a crucial part in delivering exceptional service.

Guide to Tipping on Luxury Yacht Charters

Here is a simple go-to guide for when it comes to tipping on luxury yacht charters:

  • Caribbean is typically 15-20% of the total charter rate where Mediterranean charters are commonly 10-15% of the total charter rate.
  • Typically, the tip is given at the end of the charter to the Captain in an envelope (inside a thank-you card ads a nice touch!)

By adhering to these best practices, you can ensure a respectful and mutually beneficial tipping experience.

Additionally, if you have had a particularly memorable experience during your luxury yacht charter, consider expressing your gratitude by leaving a positive review or testimonial for the charter company. This not only acknowledges the efforts of the crew but also helps future clients in making informed decisions when selecting a yacht charter service.

Tipping Example for both Mediterranean and Caribbean Yacht Charters

Caribbean Yacht Charter that is All-Inclusive for a week goes out for $50,000 . A customary gratuity would be around $8,000-$10,000 based on the level of service you received. This would be split among the number of crew aboard.

Mediterranean Yacht Charter that is Plus Expenses (meaning the APA “advanced provisioning allowance” and VAT “Taxes” are paid separately) for a week has a charter rate of $50,000 . The APA for this yacht is 35% ($17,500) and the VAT is 6% ($3,000) Bringing the total yacht charter to $70,500. The Gratuity for this charter would go off of the base charter rate of $50,000, not $70,500. This tip would be around $5,000 – $7,500 based on the level of service you received. This would be split among the number of crew aboard.

Considering Gratuity as part of your overall Budget

Consider asking us about tipping protocols during your initial booking or orientation. UC Yacht Charters, for instance, often provides guests with a tipping guide as part of the welcome package, which includes suggested gratuity ranges based on the itinerary and services provided. We also will be sure to ask before presenting you with yacht options if you would like us to consider gratuity as part of your budget / price-range.

The Importance of Recognizing Exceptional Service

If you have received exceptional service during your yacht charter, it is essential to show your appreciation with a generous tip. Exceptional service may include personalized attention, going above and beyond to fulfill your requests, or exceeding your expectations in any way.

If you’re particularly impressed with a specific aspect of your experience, mention this when you tip. Whether it’s the exceptional cleanliness of the yacht, the creative cuisine prepared by the chef, or the thoughtful itinerary crafted by the crew, acknowledging these details shows your appreciation for their efforts and expertise.

Common Myths About Tipping on Yacht Charters

There are several myths surrounding tipping on yacht charters that we will debunk:

  • Myth: Tipping is unnecessary because the crew is already paid well. Truth: While crew members are compensated for their work and maintenance aboard the yacht, tipping shows appreciation for their exceptional service. The crew will made their set salaries regardless of a charter going out or not, so for the extra countless hours of work the crew puts in during a yacht charter, the tip essentially compensates them for that extra work they so passionately do just for you!
  • Myth: Tipping is only for the captain and the chef. Truth: If you have a yacht with more than 2 crew members on board, the tip will be distributed evenly among all crew members.
  • Myth: The charter company includes gratuity in the total cost. Truth: Gratuity is never included in the charter cost and should be considered an additional expense. We are however, happy to collect your gratuity prior to a charter to release to the crew upon completion of your charter.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding on a gratuity amount for your yacht charter :

Crew Size: The size of your crew will affect the amount of work they have to do and the level of service they can provide. The larger the crew, the more hands you have on deck, and the more specialized roles that need to be filled. A larger crew will typically require a larger tip.

Length of Charter: The length of your charter will also affect the amount of work the crew has to do. If you are on a longer charter, the crew will have more opportunities to provide exceptional service, which may warrant a larger tip.

Service Level: The level of service you receive during your charter will also influence the gratuity amount. If the crew goes above and beyond to make your experience memorable, you may want to consider tipping on the higher end of the range.

Overall Experience: Your overall satisfaction with the charter should also be considered when deciding on a gratuity amount. If you had a great time and felt that the crew played a significant role in making it happen, you may want to show your appreciation with a larger tip.

In general, it is recommended to discuss gratuity with your charter company to ensure that you understand the standard tipping practices in the region and industry. Some yacht charters may have specific guidelines or expectations for gratuity, and it's always best to clarify this in advance to avoid any confusion or misunderstandings.

When to tip on a yacht charter

Gratuities are typically given at the end of the yacht charter, either on the final day or at the time of disembarkation. This allows you to assess the overall level of service provided by the crew before determining an appropriate gratuity amount.

It's also a good idea to discuss when to tip with the charter company. They can advise on the best way to distribute the tip among the crew, as well as any other customs or cultural norms that may be relevant.

When giving the gratuity, it is customary to provide the skipper with an envelope containing the cash tip, which can then be distributed among the crew members. It's important to ensure that the tip is given directly to the skipper, rather than leaving it on the yacht or giving it to an individual crew member, as this can lead to misunderstandings or miscommunications.

Ultimately, the decision of when and how to give the gratuity is up to you, and it's important to approach the process with a respectful and grateful attitude towards the hard work and dedication of the crew.

Charter Boat Tipping Etiquette: How to Tip Your Private Charter Captain

Chartering a boat is one of the best ways to spend a day on the water. But if it’s your first time, you’re probably curious about charter boat tipping etiquette.

Sound familiar? If so, you’re in the right place. This article reveals the ins and outs of charter boat tipping etiquette. Stay tuned to discover how much to tip a boat captain.

Captaining a Private Charter

So, before we dive into how much to tip a boat captain , what does captaining a private charter entail? (Well, aren’t we glad you asked!)

Depending on the crew size, charter captains take on various roles. Generally, their primary jobs include steering the ship and handling all boating operations. But of course, they also ensure that passengers have boatloads of fun.

Because charter captains are fairly busy, it’s not uncommon for them to delegate tasks to their crew. Standard boat duties include:

  • Setting the itinerary and being the tour guide : This includes planning the route, scouting cool sightseeing spots, and locating docks and/or ports to make photo-worthy stops.
  • Operating the boat : Captains are responsible for keeping an eye on the weather forecast . Safety always comes first on board, and captains should inform guests of emergency procedures. They also need to ensure that all safety gear functions as it should.
  • Acting as customer liaison : Captains should provide top-notch customer service. And, of course, crew members are here to help with this.

The captain’s services depend on how long the boating excursion lasts. And for longer trips, captains take on additional tasks:

  • Maintaining the boat : Generally, this includes cleaning the vessel and handling minor repairs.
  • Providing food and refreshments : Whether they’re whipping up grub on board or stopping at a dock-and-dine restaurant , captains should ensure their passengers are happy and satisfied.

How Much Do You Tip A Boat Captain?

Now that you know what it takes to run a successful boat charter, how much do you tip a boat captain? Well, the answer to that question depends on what kind of boat charter you’re on:

Luxury Boat or Yacht Charter

Yacht charters are the epitome of relaxation and luxury. For that reason, they are often equipped with a friendly crew, a large deck, ample seating, and in some cases, a professional chef.

On a luxury charter, tipping depends on the quality of service you receive. Generally, people tip around 10-20 percent of the charter’s total cost. Note that the captain might distribute a percentage of the tip to the rest of their crew, depending on their contributions and duration of service.

Boat Tipping Etiquette

Fishing Boat Charter

If you’re interested in fishing, chartering a fishing boat is an experience unlike any other.  Usually, tipping 10-20 percent of the charter’s total cost is proper charter fishing boat tipping etiquette (and 15 percent is generally considered the norm.) Additionally, note that the captain will likely share those earnings with their crew!

Tipping Etiquette to Consider When Chartering A Boat

Planning on chartering a boat? Familiarize yourself with charter boat tipping etiquette before you go:

  • Come prepared and know how you prefer to tip : Cash is usually king, but wire transfers will do the trick if you don’t feel like carrying around a wad of bills.
  • Wait until the end of your trip : You don’t want to tip your captain until your experience has ended. Take your time and make sure they return you to dry land first!
  • Tip the captain directly : Even if there’s additional crew onboard, you want to tip your captain directly. This ensures that everyone gets a fair portion.
  • Match the quality of service you received : If the captain went above and beyond during your experience, consider leaving them a larger tip as a token of your appreciation.
  • Ask for clarification : Ask the charter firm (or the captain themselves) about their tipping policy.

Consider Tipping Extra for Excellent Service

As you probably already know, deciding how much to tip depends on several factors. How long were you on the charter? What was the quality of service you received? How experienced was the captain?  Guests might tip less if they attended a shorter charter or their captain was inattentive.  However, we recommend tipping more if you attended a longer, high-quality charter with an experienced and attentive captain. Remember that fantastic service isn’t necessarily a given. But when it does occur, generously tipping your captain is an excellent way to thank them for the experience.   Did this blog inspire you to charter a boat? Find charters near you on our website!

How Much to Tip on a Yacht Charter?

  • By Kim Kavin
  • Updated: November 19, 2020

Moonrise superyacht

Figuring out how much to tip on a private yacht charter is a lot like figuring out how much to tip in a fine-dining restaurant. Knowing how much to tip a yacht crew involves understanding the level of service you have received, and then blending that understanding of your personal experience with guidelines about the standard tip for yacht charter.

Yacht tipping etiquette has evolved a lot in the past 10 to 15 years. The entire yacht charter industry went through an upheaval both before and after the Great Recession that saw all kinds of opinions about how much to tip on a private yacht charter. Some charter yacht clients were over-tipping before the recession, and then other charter yacht clients were under-tipping after the recession. Captains and crew couldn’t figure out what to expect, and yacht owners couldn’t figure out how to factor expected gratuities into crew salaries.

Finally, the professional organization MYBA stepped in to create the charter industry’s first-ever guidelines that brokers could send to clients asking the question: “How much do you tip on a yacht charter?” It was the first time the yacht charter industry had seen a formalized version of yacht tipping etiquette, and the MYBA Guidelines Tipping Policy continues to set the baseline for how much to tip a yacht crew today.

In a nutshell, MYBA says the standard tip for yacht charter should be 5 percent to 15 percent, depending on the client’s level of satisfaction. This yacht-tipping guidance also allows for clients to tip above 15 percent if they feel the onboard service was truly exceptional.

However, MYBA also urges captains to understand that yacht tipping places clients under no obligation to leave any gratuity at all. The MYBA captains’ agreement explicitly states that “at no time should a gratuity be solicited, either verbally or in written form when settling the final account.”

In other words, there is wiggle room in yacht tipping, just as there is wiggle room when tipping the wait staff in a restaurant. Knowing how much to tip a yacht crew is as much a matter of opinion as it is a matter of knowing the standard tipping percentages.

Liz Howard, a longtime charter yacht broker with Fraser—who worked as charter yacht crew before moving ashore for her current career—says that when clients ask her how much to tip on a private yacht charter, she tells them 8 percent to 18 percent of the listed charter rate “for a job well done.”

It’s important to note that Howard recommends the 8 percent to 18 percent tip based on the listed charter rate. That published rate for crewed charter yachts is known as the weekly base rate. It is not the full cost of a charter, which also includes expenses for provisions such as food and drink, along with any regional taxes or other fees. According to Howard, the standard tip is not calculated on the overall cost of the yacht charter, but instead calculated on the advertised base rate for booking the yacht.

Maggie Vale, senior charter broker with Churchill Yacht Partners, says how much to tip also can vary depending on where the charter takes place. Geographical norms and traditions have long affected the standard tip for yacht charter, with yacht tipping guideline sometimes encouraging lower gratuities in developing charter regions such as Eastern Europe. Conversely, yacht tipping etiquette can create expectations of higher gratuities in well-established markets such as the Western Mediterranean and Caribbean.

“Tipping varies according to country,” Vale says. “But just like any service business like restaurants or bars, gratuity should be given to servers based on the quality of performance.”

Yacht tipping also does not exist in a vacuum, Vale adds. The standard tip for a yacht charter should be adjusted upward if you’re asking more than usual of the crew—say, by chartering in the middle of a crisis like the Covid-19 pandemic. The novel coronavirus is requiring yacht charter crew to work harder and clean more frequently than ever to keep guests safe and comfortable on board. How much to tip on a private yacht charter should reflect that extra effort, Vale says.

“In this time of a global pandemic, tipping is especially appreciated and earned,” Vale says. “Now more than ever, the crew may be giving service above and beyond the normal expectations. So, take good care of them.”

Beyond considering overall percentages of the yacht’s weekly base rate, another way to think about how much to tip is to consider a per-diem bonus for each crew member.

You should tip the same amount for every crew member—just because you can see the crew member playing with your kids on the personal watercraft doesn’t mean the crew member doing laundry down below, out of sight, is any less deserving—but it can sometimes be easier to think about a per-diem rate for crew as opposed to a gratuity as a percentage of the yacht’s base rate.

For instance, some charter brokers say a reasonable per-diem gratuity is $250 to $350 per crew member, per day, because the crew are essentially working a double shift when charter guests are aboard, as opposed to just their regular shift when the owner is aboard. If you agree that the standard tip for yacht charter should be in that range as an extra-shift figure, then you can count the total number of crew members, multiply by the number of days on board, and determine the total gratuity that way.

On yachts with weekly base rates higher than $100,000, some charter brokers say that yacht tipping based on a per-diem number is necessary to keep the gratuity appropriate. At the end of the day, though, the question of how much to tip a yacht crew comes down to how the charter client feels about the service received when the charter ends.

Howard, the charter broker with Fraser, says the feeling guests have when a charter goes well will tell them, in their bones, the right amount of gratuity to offer.

“While this may seem like a lot of money,” she says, “if I have done my job correctly and matched them with the perfect crew, by the end of the charter they are going to want to give the crew all of that and then some.”

How To Tip Your Yacht Charter Crew [Travel Guide]

A guide for tipping a successful yacht charter..

Tipping is normal for Americans. We tip after dining at a restaurant, getting a haircut, or riding in a taxi. But for those in Europe, Australia, and Asia, tipping is a big question mark and often not customary as it’s not factored into their daily life. Yet, even for Americans, tipping at a larger scale — say, for a yacht charter — can also raise a few questions. What’s an adequate amount? Who do you tip? Do you have to tip in cash?

Whether you’re chartering a catamaran for a day in Key West or yachting for a week in the Mediterranean, here’s everything you need to know about tipping your yacht charter crew.

How to tip on week-long charters?

yacht charter gratuity

Booking a week-long charter in the Caribbean means plenty of sun, relaxation, and fun on the water. But as with staying at an all-inclusive resort, there are people who contribute to the overall enjoyment of your vacation. The captain, stewardesses, deckhands, and chef are all committed to a successful yacht charter. They make sure you’re comfortable, safe, and well-fed, and usually work odd hours to do so.

The Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) set a guideline so that tipping yacht charter crew isn’t so ambiguous. According to MYBA, yacht tips should be between 5% and 15% of the total cost of the charter. This rule of thumb applies primarily to the European yacht market as those travelers tend to tip less than those in the United States or the Caribbean where 15% to 20% gratuity is closer to the norm.

This guideline provides charter brokers and their clients with a reference point before embarking on the yacht charter. Tipping charter crew — as much as it’s dependent on the quality of service — also depends on the guests’ nationality, location of the charter, and chartering experience of the guests. First-time charterers from France may tip differently than a seasoned charter client from New York.

As a charterer, ask your broker if the yacht you’re booking supports the MYBA recommended guidelines. Then you’ll know what is expected before your vacation.

How to tip on day charters?

yacht charter gratuity

There’s not a specific guideline for tipping on day trips, such as a catamaran charter, as they often range in length from 4 to 8 hours. The captain and crew work as they would on a term charter by preparing the vessel, planning the route, welcoming and hosting charter guests, and ensuring the safety of everyone on board. It’s customary to tip between 10% and 20% of the base rate of the day charter. A broker may or may not be involved in the booking process, so you have to remember at the end of the day that a tip is suggested for hard work and a job well done.

How to tip on event charters?

yacht charter gratuity

Yacht charters hired for private events are a bit different than a typical day or week-long charter . Event charters are commercial and usually booked for weddings, corporate, or other social events. When hosting a private event on a boat, you may hire additional event staff such as servers, caterers, entertainers, or bartenders who are separate entities from the captain and yacht crew.

The captain’s job is focused on the logistics of travel, navigation, and safety, while the event staff is focused on the guest experience. There’s not a standard guideline as it’s advised to use your discretion based on the level of service you experienced among hired teams, so generally tip between 10% to 20%.

Is there a tipping etiquette on yachts?

yacht charter gratuity

As with tipping in other industries, the tip should be proportional to the service you received. It’s an expression of satisfaction and a job well done. Yacht crews usually go above and beyond and work about 16-18 hour days. A professional c r ew will always perform their duties to a high standard as your safety and hospitality onboard the yacht is their priority.

The crew works as a team, so it’s not customary to tip or recognize a specific crew member. The tip should be given directly to the captain at the end of the charter experience. He or she will divide the amount among the crew, including deckhands, stews, engineers, and chefs.

Do you have to pay in cash?

yacht charter gratuity

The big question — how do you pay for a tip if you don’t want to carry a large sum of money with you on vacation ? You can tip the captain via cash, check, or wire transfer. (Although check and wire transfer isn’t advised as it may not get to the crew until a few weeks later.)

When you book your luxury yacht charter , there’s an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), which is an additional amount of money set aside (on top of the charter fee) to be used for consumables during the charter including food, wine, and fuel. Charter brokers usually suggest a high amount up front as a cushion so that expenses don’t run over in the middle of your holiday. At the end of your charter, the captain should sit down with you to discuss what was spent and what’s leftover from your APA. So if you’re left with $5,000 in your APA, you can use that as part of your tip. Talk to your charter broker ahead of time to learn more about different options for leaving a tip.

Yachting is one of the safest ways to travel during the COVID-19. Yet no matter where you’re from, tipping can be confusing, especially in the instance of a charter experience. Gratuity to yacht crew can be anywhere from a couple hundred to thousands of dollars. Whether it’s for a week-long charter or quick day trip, ask your broker ahead of time about what’s expected for tipping the crew. Consider a private yacht for your next holiday — contact Denison Yachting to book your next superyacht charter.

Tipping Etiquette for Private Crewed Yacht Charters

Unless the gratuity is included in your crewed yacht charter , which is very rare and always clearly stated, it is expected that charter guests tip the crew at the end of the charter.

Tips can make up a large portion of a crew’s pay. By keeping it as a separate item, the charterer can reward a crew that has done a fabulous job and a crew can feel that if they go the extra mile, they have a chance of getting a bonus for their extra efforts.

How much should you give? For private yachts in the Caribbean, the range is 10 to 20 percent of the charter fee; while tipping etiquette in the Mediterranean is 5%-15%. If the charter fee does not include meals, the tip should be based on just the boat fee. There is some variation on this rule of thumb, we’re always happy to confirm the appropriate gratuity range for your crew.

Using the Caribbean as an example, if you feel the crew has done a good job, 20% is a good tip – by giving 15%, you are telling the crew that things were OK but not perfect. Leaving a tip of 10% sends the message that while the crew did their job, service was noticeably lacking.

These guidelines are the same for hired crews or owner-operators. Many of the owner-operators work hard to cover the cost of the cruising lifestyle they have chosen and don’t have the funds of an absentee owner who might have invested in a boat just for personal vacations. There are of course exceptions – not all absentee owners are wealthy or owner/operators broke, but the same rules apply regarding gratuities!

Unless you have strong opinions, give just one gratuity to the captain, which the crew will divide up between themselves. While crews prefer cash of course, please check with us for the alternative payment method that will work for you crew.  For large charters where the tip can run well into five figures, it is obviously impractical to use cash, and tips are often wired to the boat at the end of the charter.

Please don’t be one of those charterers that try to trick the system. We have had guests write copious, glowing notes in the yacht’s logbook and even on the post charter form they send to us when they return home, yet they walk off the boat without leaving a gratuity that adequately reflects the service they received.

We try hard to make sure you know about the gratuity at the very beginning of the booking process, so you can budget in this cost when selecting a boat in your price range. We also include it in the cost summary we send with the contract, to look over before confirming.

Please let us know if you have any questions regarding crew gratuities.

How much Should you Expect to Tip on a Yacht Charter? Everything you Should Know

yacht charter gratuity

When you’re chartering a yacht, it’s important to be aware of the etiquette surrounding tipping. In this blog post, we’ll give you some tips on how much to tip and when, so you can enjoy your trip worry-free. Whether you’re a first-time yachter or a seasoned pro, this is essential information to keep in mind. Thanks for reading!

Do you need to tip for all kinds of yacht charters?

Tipping is an important part of chartering a yacht. In certain cases, it is mandatory and in others not so much. It all comes down to the quality of service that you are receiving and how pleased you are with it. In general, it is customary to tip the crew on most yacht charters, especially if they have provided excellent service. However, there is no strict rule on how much to tip, and it is ultimately up to the charter guest’s discretion.

For crewed charters, the standard tip is around 10-20% of the total charter fee. This amount can be split among the crew members, depending on their role and level of service. On the other hand, for bareboat charters, where the guests are responsible for operating the yacht themselves, tipping is not required.

If your captain exceeds expectations and really puts in extra care for you and your party then giving them a tip after your cruise is highly recommended. Luxury charters usually include crew anyway, who should be tipped as well if their services went above and beyond what was expected. In any case, if you feel like the people involved in your charter have done a great job – don’t forget to thank them with a generous tip! It’s always a good idea to clarify the tipping policy with the charter company or the captain before the trip, to avoid any confusion or misunderstandings.

What are the parameters that can increase or decrease your tips during a yacht charter ?

yacht charter gratuity

Taking a yacht charter on a quiet escapade can be a perfect getaway for you and your crew, especially when combined with the little extra that comes in the form of tips. So it begs the question – what are some parameters to think about if, as a crew member, you want to increase your take? Several factors influence tipping, including:

  • Crew performance: The crew’s attitude, professionalism, and level of service can significantly influence the tip amount. Guests are more likely to tip higher if the crew is attentive, responsive, and accommodating.
  • Length of the charter: The duration of the charter can also impact the tip amount. Guests may choose to tip more for longer charters as the crew may have provided more personalized and attentive service over a more extended period.
  • Type of yacht: The type and size of the yacht can also influence the tip amount. Larger yachts with more extensive crews may require a higher tip due to the increased number of crew members.
  • Destination: Tipping customs can vary by destination, and guests should research local customs and expectations before chartering. In some areas, tipping may not be expected, while in others, it may be customary to tip a higher amount.
  • Special requests: If guests have specific requests or requirements during the charter, the crew may go above and beyond to fulfill them, which can result in a higher tip amount.
  • Overall satisfaction: Ultimately, the amount of tips can be influenced by the guests’ overall satisfaction with the charter experience, including the yacht’s condition, itinerary, and activities provided.

Who should you give your tip to on board a yacht? The captain or the concerned crew?

yacht charter gratuity

On a yacht charter, the standard practice is to give the tip to the captain, who will then distribute it among the crew members. The captain is typically responsible for managing the crew and ensuring that they provide high-quality service to the guests.

However, if a guest wishes to recognize a particular crew member for exceptional service, it is acceptable to give an individual tip directly to that crew member. In this case, it’s a good idea to let the captain know that you have provided an individual tip to the crew member, as this can help to avoid any confusion or misunderstandings.

It’s essential to remember that the distribution of the tip is at the captain’s discretion, and the captain may decide to divide the tip equally among all crew members or distribute it based on each crew member’s performance and contribution to the charter.

Overall, it’s always a good idea to clarify the tipping policy with the charter company or the captain before the trip to ensure that you understand the expectations and customary practices for tipping on the yacht.

How should you pay your tip after a luxury yacht charter?

yacht charter gratuity

The method of payment for the tip on a luxury yacht charter can vary depending on the charter company and the specific arrangements made with the crew. In general, there are several common ways to pay the tip on a yacht charter:

  • Cash: The most common way to pay the tip is by cash, which is usually handed to the captain in an envelope at the end of the charter. The captain will then distribute the tip among the crew members.
  • Bank transfer: Some charter companies may offer the option of paying the tip by bank transfer, which can be a convenient way to transfer larger amounts of money. However, it’s essential to confirm the banking details with the charter company to ensure that the transfer is properly processed.
  • Credit card: Some charter companies may also accept credit card payments for the tip, although this is less common. It’s important to check with the charter company beforehand to ensure that they accept credit card payments and to understand any associated fees.

It’s essential to clarify the tipping policy and payment method in advance with your broker or with the captain before the trip to avoid any confusion or misunderstandings. Additionally, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash in case you decide to tip individual crew members for exceptional service during the charter.

Do the yacht crew members rely on tips to make a living?

In the yachting industry, it is common for crew members to rely on tips as a significant portion of their income. While the base salary for yacht crew members can vary depending on their position, experience, and the size of the yacht, it is generally not as high as other industries with similar skill sets.

Tipping practices in the yachting industry can vary depending on the location and culture, but it is common for charter guests to leave a gratuity at the end of their trip. The amount of the tip can depend on various factors, including the quality of service, the length of the trip, and the number of crew members on board.

Tips can make up a significant portion of a crew member’s income, with some crew members reporting that they receive anywhere from 5% to 20% of the total charter fee. However, it is important to note that relying solely on tips for income can be unpredictable, as gratuity amounts can vary greatly depending on the charter guests’ satisfaction and generosity.

Additionally, some yachts have policies in place regarding the distribution of tips among crew members, which can vary depending on the yacht’s ownership or management. Some yachts may distribute tips equally among all crew members, while others may allocate tips based on a crew member’s position or seniority.

Is it OK not to tip a yacht charter if you are not satisfied with the service received?

yacht charter gratuity

While tipping is customary in the yachting industry, it is ultimately up to the charter guests to decide whether or not to leave a tip based on their level of satisfaction with the service received. If a charter guest feels that the service provided by the yacht crew did not meet their expectations, it is understandable that they may not feel inclined to leave a gratuity.

That being said, if a guest decides not to tip due to unsatisfactory service, it is generally considered good practice to provide constructive feedback to the yacht’s management or owner. This can help the yacht crew identify areas for improvement and work to ensure that future guests have a better experience.

It’s important to note that there may be other factors outside of the yacht crew’s control that could impact the quality of service, such as weather conditions or unforeseen technical issues. In these cases, it is recommended to communicate any concerns with the crew or yacht management as soon as possible an event occur to give them the opportunity to address the issue and improve the experience before the end of your charter.

In summary, while it is customary to leave a tip for yacht crew members, guests are not obligated to do so if they are not satisfied with the service received. However, we believe that a service is always provided during a yacht charter, and your crew probably deserve a reward while it is recommended to provide feedback to help improve the experience for future guests.

Remember that the yacht crew works hard to ensure that you have a memorable and enjoyable experience on your charter, and a gratuity is a way to show your gratitude for their efforts. By leaving a tip, you can help support the hardworking crew members and ensure that they continue to provide exceptional service for future charters.

Charter Tipping

An exceptional experience – from boarding to reconciliation.

Yacht charters routinely provide an exceptional service experience for guests. The custom of tipping crew can create confusion for both charterers and crew.

It is customary to tip crew on charter yachts at the conclusion of the trip. The process of how that is done and at what amount is often awkward for the charter guest. In 2008 the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) addressed the lack of guidelines for crew gratuities on yacht charters.

An internationally accepted guideline neutralizes the variation of regional traditions in tipping. It also presents an opportunity for all participants in the charter process - captains and crew, owners, charter managers, brokers and the booking clients - to operate in consensus.

The guideline document sets some standards for the industry.

  • A 5% to 15% range of a gratuity
  • Use of the base rate of the charter to calculate the tip
  • Distribution of the gratuity by the Captain
  • No verbal or written solicitation of tips should occur
  • Gratuity is at the discretion of the guest
  • Cash gratuities may be paid by the charter guest
  • Gratuities may be distributed by the charter company

In anticipation of long hours and high demands charter crew are generally paid at the high end of the wage scale. A high level of service is assumed from all members of the team. Personalized efforts with dive or jet-ski instruction, food and beverage service in the wee hours, shore excursion assistance might all add to the customer satisfaction of a charter guest.

Crew do not realize that hints about gratuity can in fact tip the perception of satisfaction away from reward. Occasionally Captains will include a target (as high as 20%) gratuity suggestion in a ‘Welcome Aboard’ letter. Providing the charter was booked through a broker, it is better for the broker to educate the guest on the fact that the charter fee does not include the customary tip.

There are a number of acceptable ways for the guest to pay a crew gratuity. As international accounting is complex and the reconciliation of the charter account could take as much as six weeks there is no pressure to pay the gratuity on the last day of the charter as the complete accounting process contributes to the client's overall hapiness of the charter experience and may influence the level of gratuity.

  • The guest might give the gratuity in cash to the captain at the conclusion of the trip.
  • The charterer may choose to examine the account statement provided by the captain as the charter ends (including any outstanding expenses). A portion of the balance of the advance provisioning allowance could be applied to gratuities.
  • The charter guest may also choose to wait until the final reconciliation of the charter account and determine at that time the full level of customer satisfaction with the charter. The charter manager can then be given direction on the percentage of the base rate to disburse to the crew as gratuity.

The tip should reflect the level of service the guest perceived. Excellent service contributes to the charter experience and generally results in a generous gratuity. Use of the MYBA standards for gratuity will minimize confusion on the part of the charterer. It can also eliminate unrealistic expectations on the part of crew. The MYBA document, Information For Charter Yacht Captains , is available.

Proper disbursement of the APA adds value to the charter experience

What is an Advanced Provisioning Allowance?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance is a standard part of any charter contract. The intent of the allowance is for the charter guest to fully enjoy the holiday by transferring all daily issues of expenses to the yacht captain. Reconciliation of the actual expenses is done on the final day of the charter.

  • Tips on a Superyacht Charter

How much you should leave as a tip is still one of life’s mysteries. Whether it’s the bell man, a waiter or hairdresser, it’s often difficult to know just what to give as a thank you for their services. Sailing on a superyacht charter doesn’t really make this particular issue any easier although it is customary to give the crew a gratuity at the end of your vacation. Here’s some info about ending your trip on a high note and what to offer as a tip.

An acceptable amount to tip

Generally, tips range from 5% to 15% of the basic charter fee. This obviously depends on the yacht and the location. If in Europe, tips are usually more towards the lower end of the scale while in the US or Caribbean they tend to head towards the higher end.

Any official guidelines to take note of?

Years ago, lots of charterers started to leave tips of 25% or more which made certain crew expecting the same from all guests. They were often disappointed when smaller amounts were offered and didn’t hesitate to voice their opinions about the fact.

This lead to the MYBA (Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association) issuing a policy about tipping. This stipulated as guidelines that 5%-15% should be the range of tips given to crew and any other on-board staff.

These guidelines were accepted as the norm and also gave charterers an idea of what to leave, making everyone happy. Ask your broker whether these MYBA policies apply on the particular yacht you’re interested in chartering, well in advance.

What percentage should I give?

Remember charter crew work 16-18 hours each day from dawn to midnight. They do work very hard to make sure all guests are well looked after while providing a top-class service. Taking this into account should give you a good idea of the percentage of tip to give.

Tipping etiquette

There’s an unspoken rule that all tips should be given to the captain. He will then divide the amount between the crew so everyone receives a fair share. Remember that some crew work in the background so you might never see them in person.

Should I give some crew more than others?

If a member of the crew has paid special attention to you and ensured you have had a wonderful vacation, is it fair to give him or her a large tip? The answer is, not really. All crew work together as a team and should be offered the same cash tip as each other.

The importance of the crew

With superyachts available to charter coming in all different sizes, they need to carry the right number of crew. Smaller vessels usually operate with just a captain and a chef who can also double up as a deckhand. Larger superyachts and some mega charter yachts often have as many as fifty crew members. Mid-size charter yachts, i.e. 30-60m in length, can carry between six and fifteen crew.

Although crew are professionally trained to know all there is to know on a charter, they also have interchangeable roles. These roles fall into five categories of what the crew can and can’t do while on board. It’s essential for guests to understand just what each member of the crew offer.

The captain who usually has four gold stripes

The captain has the ultimate responsibility for the yacht he is sailing and what he says, goes. This is the rule of the sea and no-one should question it unless they want to end up on shore instead of being out on the ocean.

Do make sure the captain knows where you would like to sail to and your preferences while on board. He or she will do everything they can to grant all of your wishes, within their capability of course. The captain can also suggest a fantastic itinerary for you. After all he has years of experience in sailing to the best exotic destinations or the most interesting locations.

It's inadvisable to ask for the impossible. Some things just cannot be changed for instance, times of leaving a certain dock to another harbour at an unearthly hour. The captain has to think about the tide turning usually mid-morning when the harbour entrance might be too shallow to enter.

Take notice of the captain’s weather advice too. Don’t argue your case with him, he knows best especially when the weather may turn. Again, with years of experience behind him, he is a charter captain who knows just what can happen if sailing in rough seas. Seasickness isn’t much fun so if the forecast isn’t too good, it’s best to stay at anchor until the weather clears.

The onboard chef

Another very important person on board is the chef. He or she is responsible for all meals cooked under his or her supervision. Being flexible means the chef can change from preparing a five-course gourmet dinner to simple on-deck barbecue food or even jam sandwiches for the children.

Before booking a yacht charter vacation, find out about the chef and his or her expertise. Take a look at sample menus to make sure everyone in your party is catered for especially if there are any vegans. If for instance a chef has a leaning towards Asian cuisine, it won’t be much fun if you don’t enjoy noodles or sushi. Let the charter broker know well in advance what you like to eat and drink. There should be preference sheets to fill in so there won’t be any issues once you set sail.

Remember the chef has to rise early in the morning to start preparing breakfast and all the day/evening meals. Lots of people prefer to eat late in the evening so the chef will still be on the go late at night.

Deck crew who operate and maintain the vessel

The first officer, who is second in command to the captain, to the deck hands have responsibility running the tenders and handling the dock lines. Sometimes deck crew may double up as bar tenders or servers of evening meals, so they also work long hours. One of the crew might be the person who launches jet skis or other water toys when asked. Others operate the tenders to and from shore while some are on board to keep the vessel looking spotless at all times.

If you need any kind of help while on vacation, don’t be shy to ask a member of the deck crew. Most of them have walkie-talkie radios and if he or she isn’t the right person to sort your issue out, someone else can be contacted quickly to come to your assistance. Something as small as moving a lounger into the sun is better to be left to one of the crew as sliding such a piece of furniture could scratch the expensive deck.

Interior crew

Although the name “interior crew” sounds a bit odd, these members of staff will serve you whatever you want while you are on one of the outside decks. The chief steward or stewardess oversee the interior crew and a team of stewards/stewardesses.

The teams responsible for replacing used sheets with fresh bedding, towels, cleaning the cabins and living areas are more like hotel staff. They will turn your bed down in the evening, maybe place a chocolate on your pillow, help with missing buttons or clean up a spillage on one of your outfits.

Make sure the interior crew know about any specific requests like extra pillows or towels. You may wish for water in the fridge or an early wake-up call. If so, do ask in good time.

The engineers

Last but by no means least are the unsung heroes, the engineers. These members of the crew ensure engines are running properly while taking care of the ancillary systems too. They spend most of their day and evening below deck and usually wear overalls so you can identify them.

The engineering crew might even take the place of tender drivers or help with the water toys, but as a rule of thumb they are often unseen on deck.

Remember when the vessel is in dock or at anchor, the engineering team are still on duty. Yacht systems are working constantly, day and night.

A Beginner’s Guide to Chartering a Yacht

By Chrissie McClatchie

With the pandemic driving a boom in superyacht charters , more and more people are taking to the water for their first yachting experience. But while some superyachts can cost more than a million a week to charter, you don’t need to outlay seven figures for your own yachting vacation.

Wondering what else you need to know before stepping on board for the very first time? We’ve turned to experts in the yachting industry for their insider intel on how to charter a yacht like a pro—from how much it will run you, to where to go, and well beyond. Read on.

Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

It’s a charter broker’s job to match you with the right yacht and crew—and then take the lead in planning the entire experience. Professional bodies such as MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association act as a database of industry-recognized professionals. But the best source for finding a charter broker is often your own network. “Building up a relationship with a charter broker is very important,” says Jacqui Lockhart, a Monaco-based broker at Camper & Nicholsons International . “If possible, look for a recommendation from a friend.”

Once you’ve found the right broker, communication with them will be key. “Take the time to be as detailed with your preferences, such as dietary requirements, likes and dislikes, and preferred activities, as possible,” says London-based broker Charles Crane of Edmiston . “This will give us and the crew the best information to make the charter a success and tailored to perfection.”

How much should I be prepared to spend?

“The entry point is around $40,000 for a week on a yacht 82-feet upwards that can sleep six people," says Lockhart. What can take first time charterers by surprise is that this isn’t an all-inclusive figure. “The charter fee covers the hire, the crew, the insurance—everything that’s linked to the yacht,” Lockhart continues. Anything specifically for the client is extra—including food and beverages, fuel, and dockage. As a rule of thumb, budget for an extra 30 percent on top of the baseline charter figure for these extras, which goes into a fund known as the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA). At the end of the charter, it is also customary to tip the crew; between 10 and 20 percent of the charter fee is a guideline figure. There may also be Value Added Tax (VAT) to pay on the charter rate, depending on the country of embarkation.

At the smaller end of the charter fleet, more opportunity exists for single-cabin bookings rather than whole yacht charters. This year in the Caribbean , Sheila Ruffin of Soca Yacht Charters has launched a “Stranger on the Seas” package. Prices start at around $6,000 per person—all-inclusive—on catamarans between 48 and 60 feet. “This allows couples the opportunity to mix and mingle with other couples for an adventurous and social yacht charter on the Caribbean Sea,” says Ruffin.

What destinations are best suited to first-time charterers?

“For first-timers, I wouldn’t recommend a remote destination,” says Captain Kelly Gordon of Freddy , a 106-foot charter yacht based out of the Bahamas . “When it’s hard to get to, that eats up some of your valuable time and can also take some of the fun out of it.”

While yachts are heading towards unchartered waters such as Antarctica with increasing frequency, cruising grounds in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are classic destinations for a reason. “For the first-time charterer in these locations, there will be more yacht options to choose from, proven cruising grounds with known and safe anchorages, well-connected and easy access hubs to ensure smooth passage to embark and disembark the vessel as well as the ability to source most provisions that guests may want,” says Crane.

The key ingredient? The crew.

Although much of the focus is on securing the right yacht, the secret to the success of a charter is its crew. “Put simply, the crew make the difference between a good charter yacht and a bad one,” says Crane. Today’s crew are increasingly versatile. “They may also be a diving or yoga instructor, personal trainer, fisherman, or sommelier,” he continues.

The crew also knows your cruising area better than anyone else. “Be sure to pick their brain on fun things to do. They often love the opportunity to come up with fun activities and games, whether for kids or adults,” says Lotte Barker-Hahlo, a London-based charter broker at Burgess .

The level of hospitality from crew on most yachts often convert first-time charters into repeat customers. “The attention to detail from the crew is unsurpassed by any other luxury holiday,” says Barker-Hahlo. “From the unpacking of your suitcase to being offered a drink before you’ve even realized you’re thirsty, it’s 24-hour care and service.”

Gordon says that much of the feedback she receives at the end of a first-time charter is why didn’t we do this earlier? “People are always surprised at how we take the time to get to know their needs before they have even arrived. We really do study those preference sheets!”

Think carefully about who else you want on board

Another important factor to a successful yacht vacation? Your fellow travelers. This is a specific type of vacation, which should narrow your list of invitees. “Strongly consider who you vacation with when chartering a yacht,” urges Ruffin. “Unlike other vacation options, yachts are very intimate and exclusive. Choose to share your water adventure with those you like and will enjoy on the water for a week or more.” Maybe, even for veteran yachties, that's the sagest advice of all.

Tipping Guidelines for Yacht Charters

St Martin

Wow, am I walking straight into the lion’s jaws, or what? Tipping has been an ongoing topic of discussion between Captains, Crews, Clearing Houses, Management Companies and Charter Booking Agents and Brokers for decades. Recently, with the recession, it has become a hot topic and, as usual, will not be resolved this year either. This is because there is no really comprehensive answer possible.

Is Tipping Mandatory

Tipping is customer driven. There are guidelines, of course but in the final analysis A TIP IS A TIP. It’s not part of the crew’s salary and nor should it be. The crew is paid a salary and tips should fall into the “nice-to-have” department. The amount of the tip will depend on the level of service that the customer feels they deserve and usually involves a consideration of services rendered above and beyond the call of duty.

yacht charter gratuity

How Should You Tender This Money

The gratuity should be in cash and paid to the captain, he or she will distribute the gratuity to the other crew members. It does not matter whether the crew are the owner/operators of the boat – chartering is more of a lifestyle choice and doesn’t provide great ROI’s so an owner/operator will appreciate a tip for good service just as much as a salaried crew member.

Leaving a handsome gratuity in the case of larger yachts with more expensive base rates can involve quite a lot of cash that many charterers prefer not to carry with them. The best option is to leave a lump sum of, say, 15% or 20% of the base charter rate in escrow with your Charter Booking Agent or Broker. After your charter has ended, you can simply email, your broker to release all or part of the funds to the boat as a gratuity.  Most brokers will be happy to perform this service.

When booking term charters it is very important that the tipping standard for the region of charter is discussed. So that if a client has a budget of $10,000 for his/her vacation it is understood that they should look for a yacht in the $8,500 – $9,000 range because with a tip added it will then be $10,000. Most charters of this nature are booked through a yacht charter broker and it is the brokers fiduciary responsibility to discuss with a client what extra fees can be expected.

Special Events

Now there is another area of yacht charter to think about and that is  Event Charters . In South Florida and New York there are many party boats that can hold from 2 guests to 500 guests and which are booked for weddings, corporate and all other social events. Tipping is also an expected part of the charter. There are no standards  here to go by except to advise a client that it is discretionary and should be based on level of service experienced.

Some calculate this by the number of crew on board and allocate X amount per crew member. Some yachts calculate this tip at a rate of $5 per guest. So if you have 50 guests then a tip of $250 would be appropriate. Again if the level of service is outstanding then feel free to leave a bigger amount.

As stated above in the first paragraph there is no hard and fast rule for tipping. Gratuity should not be expected. It is up to the Charterer to decide on this.

You are out of your mind. You don’t tip a Captain based on the cost of the boat, food, toys etc. You tip a Captain and crew based on the service and perhaps his salary. No one who is an average family going on a vacation computes the cost of the gratuity before they get on the plane. If you have $10,000 to spend you spend $10,000 and add the tip later. Why would anyone pay an additional 15% on every egg, can of coke and swim fins they used. This is really crazy.

I’m not really out of my mind (although my wife is constantly insisting that I am). I’m merely conveying an industry standard. Maybe because typically there are no pension benefits and social security requirements for charter crews in the US or in the Caribbean. The Mediterranean crew tipping standards are much lower because most have these benefits by law. I have to stress that gratuities are always optional and the amount or percentage is based on service, as you correctly point out. The article provides a backdrop and advises charter clients what is customary. TK

Can you please provide some additional direction on tipping in Croatia? If I am chartering a boat through a company but hired a skipper and hostess separately through a friend recommendation, do I tip on the boat cost at all or only on the crew costs? What is the proper way to tip all parties?

We are looking into going on a charter with a private crew in New England this summer, and I’ve had this question about tipping. I hadn’t originally taken this into account when planning our budget, but I can see how this could affect choosing a charter. As you explained, a broker should discuss this, but we will be aware of it as well as we plan for our trip. Thanks for sharing!

I’m a person who spends about $10,000 TOTAL on a vacation, and I can’t imagine doing such a fussy thing as escrow for a thousand or two. Are there REALLY people who pay $10,000 for a bareboat charter, but think a few thousand is excessive pocket money? On a trip to the islands… Where everything is cash…

Good info about the Med being less- just what I was wondering.

Good blog you’ve got here.. It’s difficult to find high quality writing like yours nowadays. I really appreciate individuals like you!

Take care!!

I am a bit stumped on the tipping etiquette for a Catamaran charter in the BVI’s. My husband and I are very good tippers, so I do not want to over tip, but we especially do not want to under tip! The total cost of our 7 day chartered Catamaran is $11,125 for 6 people. The breakdown is accommodations $7525 and full board is $3600 . The crew is the Owner/captain and his wife. He has expressed that the customary is 15-20% of the total. This seems rather high based on my research. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I didn’t realize that contracting a yacht could be so moderate; however now I consider it, it bodes well. This appears as though an ideal choice for a more distant family get-away. Our last expanded get-away as a family finished being incredibly exorbitant, and we as a whole concluded we would be searching for something that the entire family could appreciate that was somewhat more unwinding. I figure a yacht would be ideal for that.

You are out of your mind. You don’t tip a Captain based on the cost of the boat, food, toys, etc. You tip a Captain and crew based on the service and perhaps his salary. No one who is an average family going on a vacation computes the cost of the gratuity before they get on the plane. If you have $10,000 to spend you spend $10,000 and add the tip later. Why would anyone pay an additional 15% on every egg, can of coke, and swim fins they used. This is really crazy.

When you’re on a charter yacht in the US, it’s sort of the done thing to tip the captain. A regular tip is around $750, but if the boat captain goes all out to make your trip awesome, $1000 is more like it!

5 top guidelines for tipping a yacht charter captain

Chartering a yacht is a service-related industry, and as with most industries similar to it, tipping is in the hands of the customer. A common practice in this service-related industry is to pay some form of gratuity to the captain of your ship on charters. As with the restaurant industry, tips add up to become a substantial part of a yacht charter captain's income.  It is also a proper way for you to acknowledge good service and show appreciation of the good service received from the captain.

However, there are no set rules regarding tipping or not tipping the captain and crew of your yacht charter. Questions arise from the fact that by paying a reasonable sum on chartering a yacht, one has covered provisioning fees (often used to provide for the crew) and other expenses that most likely cover the Captain and crew salaries.

With these uncertainties in mind, this GetBoat article would provide you with 5 guidelines for tipping a yacht charter and answer your questions on tipping a yacht charter;

  • Do you tip the captain of a charter boat?
  • How much do you tip a charter captain?
  • How much do you tip a Charter Crew?
  • What is a good tip for a Charter?
  • How are Tips given for a Yacht Charter?

yacht charter gratuity

1. Do you tip the captain of a charter boat?

If we had a dollar from the number of times this question was asked, we would give Jeff Bezos a run for his money. For example, let's take that you order a cake from a bakery for an agreed sum, the cake gets delivered, and no tip is required because a fair trade ensued. However, if you go to pick up the cake and the lady at the counter performs an excellent job to ensure the transaction is perfect to your need, again, no tip is expected; yet it is up to you to decide if you want to tip.

2.  How much do you tip a charter captain?

There is no handbook for tipping yacht charter captains for beginners; therefore, no specific sum is set to that effect. However, there is a widespread custom to tip a charter captain 5% to 20% of the yacht charter fee, but as stated earlier, there is no handbook guiding that. If you were to book a lodge for the night, you certainly would not tip the managers more than half your hotel bill except, of course, in some extraordinary event. That is also applicable to tipping a charter captain, there is no specified percentage to tip, but a reasonable man would be wise to stick to a 10%-20% of the entire yacht fare as a tip.

3. How much do you tip a charter Crew?

Most of the crews do not earn tidy sums of money per annum, and then you add to that having to live on a 50-ft sailboat; it does not exactly make up for quite a pleasant experience. Traditionally, a tip reimburses the crew the broker fee's cost and pays the service to the crew's services to guests. If the crew is employed by larger companies that cannot meet minimum wage, a tip is expected to help cover the lapses in their salary.

The generally accepted tip falls around 10% to 15% to cover any miscellaneous they might have incurred on your behalf. Also, the percentage to tip a charter crew is not fixed, and guests can vary the percentage in tandem to the services rendered.

4. What is a good tip for a charter?

From common usage and reason, a good charter tip falls between 10 -20% of the value of a charter; the price of a charter is not the standard but merely a yardstick for tipping. Here is our customizable guideline for tipping a yacht charter*.

* We  indicated yacht charter average price. The price depends on several factors: location, season, boat type, number of persons and other.

5. How are Tips given for a Yacht Charter?

Feedbacks from crews, hostess, and first mates seem to suggest the need for tips on good service and smooth entertainment. Good crews can't possibly be paid enough; Tipping is better handled by paying the tip in cash to the charter captain or crew members in person and not by proxy.

Now you know all about tipping a yacht charter. And Getboat will help you to charter it.

Types of Yachts: Exploring Your Options

What are the different types of yachts available for charter and what factors should you consider when choosing the right one for your voyage? When it comes to yacht chartering, there is a wide range of options to consider. Yachts come in various sizes, from small to large, each offering its own advantages and disadvantages. Motor yachts, for example, provide the convenience of speed and power, allowing you to easily explore different destinations . However, they can be more expensive to operate and maintain. On the other hand, sailing yachts offer the allure of wind-powered voyages, providing a more authentic and eco-friendly experience. They may require more skill to operate, but can offer a sense of serenity and connection to nature. Luxury yachts, as the name suggests, offer extravagant amenities and unparalleled comfort. From jacuzzis and helipads to gourmet kitchens and spacious lounges, these yachts are designed to provide the ultimate in indulgence. Lastly, when choosing a yacht design, you must consider whether to opt for a catamaran or a monohull . Catamarans offer stability and spaciousness, while monohulls provide better performance and a traditional sailing experience. Ultimately, the right yacht for your voyage depends on your personal preferences, budget, and desired experience.

Planning Your Itinerary: Destinations and Routes

When planning your yacht charter itinerary, it is essential to carefully consider the destinations and routes you wish to explore. Whether you prefer a leisurely cruise or an adventurous sail, there are endless options to discover hidden gems around the world.

Time management is crucial when planning your itinerary. Research the distance between destinations and factor in travel time to ensure a well-paced journey. It is also important to allocate enough time at each stop to fully experience the local culture and attractions.

Budgeting is another key aspect to consider. Some destinations may have higher docking fees or require additional permits, so it is important to plan accordingly. Keep in mind that some areas offer more affordable options for provisioning and fueling, which can help manage costs.

One of the highlights of yacht chartering is indulging in local cuisine. Explore restaurants, markets, and street food vendors along your chosen route to savor the flavors of the region. Immerse yourself in the local culture by trying traditional dishes and experiencing the vibrant dining scene.

Respecting the Yacht and Its Facilities

Adhering to proper etiquette is essential when it comes to respecting the yacht and its facilities during your charter experience. Whether you’re a first-time charterer or a seasoned sailor, it’s important to be mindful of the maintenance expectations set by the yacht’s crew. This includes keeping the yacht clean and tidy, and reporting any damages or issues promptly.

When it comes to watersports etiquette, it’s crucial to be respectful of other guests and the marine environment. Avoid excessive noise and be mindful of speed limits and no-wake zones. Additionally, follow eco-friendly practices by not throwing any trash or waste overboard and using designated areas for fueling and waste disposal.

Proper use of onboard amenities is also important. Treat the yacht’s facilities with care and respect. Follow any guidelines provided by the crew for using the swimming pool, hot tub, or gym equipment. Take care not to damage or misuse any equipment or appliances.

Lastly, handling personal belongings is crucial to maintaining a seamless charter experience. Keep personal items organized and avoid leaving them in common areas. Use designated storage spaces and be mindful of others’ personal space.

Following Safety Protocols and Guidelines

  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a secure and well-organized yacht charter experience. Safety is paramount when it comes to enjoying a yacht charter. To ensure a seamless experience, it is essential to follow all safety protocols and guidelines. Here are some key areas to focus on:
  • Emergency procedures: Familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures onboard the yacht. Know the location of emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits. In the event of an emergency, remain calm and follow the instructions of the crew.
  • Evacuation protocols: Understand the evacuation protocols and know where the life rafts are located. Familiarize yourself with the procedures for launching and boarding the life rafts, should the need arise.
  • Life jacket usage: Wear a life jacket whenever you are on the deck or participating in water activities . Ensure that the life jacket fits properly and is fastened securely.
  • Fire safety measures: Follow all fire safety measures and guidelines provided by the crew. This includes not smoking in restricted areas and being cautious when using electrical equipment.
  • Navigation rules: Observe the navigation rules and guidelines to maintain a safe environment for everyone on board. This includes respecting other vessels’ right of way, maintaining a safe distance, and adhering to speed limits.

Being Mindful of Noise Levels and Privacy

When it comes to yacht charter etiquette, it is important to be mindful of noise levels and respect the privacy of others on board. Cabin decorum plays a crucial role in creating a harmonious environment for everyone. Noise restrictions are often in place to ensure a peaceful experience for all passengers. It is essential to adhere to these guidelines and keep noise levels to a minimum, especially during quiet hours.

Respecting privacy boundaries is equally important. Remember that even though you may be sharing a yacht with others, everyone deserves their personal space. Avoid intruding on others’ cabins without permission, and be mindful of their need for solitude. If you need to discuss something important or have a gathering, consider using common areas instead of disturbing others in their private quarters.

To enhance privacy and minimize noise disruption, yacht charters often invest in soundproofing measures. These can include insulated walls and doors to minimize sound transmission between cabins. By being conscious of noise levels and respecting privacy boundaries, you contribute to a more enjoyable and seamless experience for all on board.

Proper Dining and Table Manners

To ensure a seamless yacht charter experience, it is crucial to practice proper dining and table manners, maintaining the same level of mindfulness and respect as demonstrated in previous subtopics. Dining on a yacht requires a certain level of etiquette to create an enjoyable atmosphere for all guests. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Seating arrangements: Follow the guidance of the crew when it comes to seating arrangements. Wait for the host or hostess to indicate where you should sit, and avoid switching seats without permission.
  • Utensil usage: Start with the outermost utensils and work your way in as each course is served. Use the appropriate utensils for each dish, and remember to hold them properly.
  • Napkin etiquette: Place your napkin on your lap as soon as you are seated. Use it to wipe your mouth and hands discreetly, and remember to place it neatly on the table when you leave.
  • Proper use of glassware: Familiarize yourself with the different types of glassware and their purposes. Use the appropriate glass for each beverage, and hold it by the stem to avoid smudging the glass.
  • Polite conversation topics: Engage in pleasant and light-hearted conversation. Avoid controversial or sensitive topics to maintain a harmonious atmosphere.

Tipping and Showing Appreciation to the Crew

Showing appreciation to the crew on a yacht charter is best done by generously tipping for their exceptional service. When it comes to gratuity expectations, it is customary to tip between 10-20% of the total charter cost. However, if the crew has gone above and beyond to ensure your comfort and enjoyment, it is perfectly acceptable to tip more.

In addition to monetary gratuity, there are other crew appreciation gestures that can show your gratitude. For example, taking the time to write a thank-you note or providing glowing feedback to the charter company can go a long way in recognizing their hard work.

Handling special requests is another area where the crew’s dedication and professionalism shine. Whether it’s arranging a surprise celebration, accommodating dietary restrictions, or organizing a special excursion, the crew’s ability to fulfill these requests with a smile is truly commendable.

Open and clear communication with the crew is crucial for a seamless experience. From discussing your preferences before the charter to addressing any concerns or needs during the trip, maintaining a respectful and friendly rapport with the crew ensures that they can provide you with the best possible service.

Lastly, recognizing exceptional service is important. If a crew member has gone above and beyond their duties, expressing your appreciation directly to them can make their day. It could be a simple compliment, a small gift, or even a handwritten note to show your gratitude for their outstanding efforts.

In the realm of yacht charters, adhering to proper etiquette is crucial for a seamless and enjoyable experience. By respecting the crew, following safety protocols, and understanding the importance of privacy, guests can create a harmonious environment onboard. Additionally, dressing appropriately, observing table manners, and showing appreciation through tipping are all essential aspects of yacht charter etiquette. By embracing these guidelines, guests can ensure a memorable and refined journey on the open seas.

The Burgess charter experience

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport terminal project nears completion

Exterior view of an airport as seen from the tarmac.

The Palouse’s new air travel hub is nearing completion and set to open to the public later this month.

The Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport’s new 47,000 square foot terminal is opening May 22 after two years of construction . The $92 million project includes a brand new terminal nearly six times larger than the existing structure, as well as an additional 4,500 square foot expansion debuting later this summer.

Airport officials hosted a pre-opening tour of the new facility for Palouse-area media on Tuesday.

The new terminal includes capacity for three ticket counters, two TSA screening lanes and three rental car counters. Private charter security screenings will also be available in August with the completion of the western expansion. Passengers arriving into Pullman will no longer have to brave the weather conditions outside, and will instead pass through a modern security gate inside the terminal building.

In spite of the changes, Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport Board Chair and Pullman Mayor Francis Benjamin said the security experience is still likely to be the fastest passengers have experienced with air travel.

References to the Palouse and its institutions of higher education will be evident throughout the new airport. Artistic depictions of the Palouse punctuate each ticket counter, while Washington State University and University of Idaho iconography will be visible throughout the site. Glenn Johnson, longtime Pullman mayor and voice of the Cougs , welcomes visitors to the terminal and provides pre-boarding instructions.

WSU and UI, both heavy users of the airport, provided a joint $1 million in support for the project in 2021, with the cities of Pullman and Moscow contributing a further $2 million each.

Art Bettge, vice-chair of the airport board, noted during a tour of the facility that between the new terminal and the runway project completed in 2022, the Palouse has seen $250 million in investments for a local cost of about $18 million. The lion’s share of the two project’s funding has come from federal sources.

Unlike most airports, summer represents a slowdown for the airport, giving staff time to adjust to the new facilities before the number of flights is expected to pick up in the fall. The airport currently offers two flights to Seattle daily through Aug. 15, with that number rising to five or six thereafter with the addition of a daily flight to Boise. Additional destinations are also being considered.

The new terminal includes seating for upwards of 160 people, an outdoor seating area, a service animal relief area, and space for concessions both pre- and post-security screening. Approximately 70 people work at the airport, with additional staffing needs likely once the new terminal is fully online.
