The World's First Hydrogen-Powered Superyacht Has a $644 Million Price Tag

Superyachts seemed to be among the last modes of (luxe) transportation to bend toward the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly engine designs. But if news from last week’s Monaco Yacht Show served as a bellwether, the industry meant to cater to the wealthiest among us made a progressive splash with the unveiling of Aqua, the world's first hydrogen-powered superyacht.

Designed by the Dutch firm Sinot Yacht & Architecture Design, Aqua is a nearly 400-foot-long vessel that's run entirely by a renewable energy source. "Water is the eternal fuel of life, the life-sustaining force that makes planet Earth habitable," says Sander Sinot, founder of the firm that bears his name. "Water is soft, yet at the same time it cuts through hard rocks." It was this appreciation of water that helped the firm find balance between the natural world and the technological. The propulsion system is made up of two 28-ton vacuumed tanks that each contain liquified hydrogen which are stored at -423 degrees Fahrenheit. Along with being eco-friendly, hydrogen-based energy means for a quieter experience aboard the ship in comparison to traditional engines. That said, there will be backup diesel generators handy should the captain ever need them.

There was much confusion on Monday if there was already a buyer who had paid the hefty $644 million price tag. Reports spread throughout the internet that billionaire Bill Gates had purchased the superyacht, rumors that proved to be false. Yet readers couldn't be blamed for believing such reports, as images show Aqua to include its own infinity pool, helipad, spa, and gym—amenities meant to attract billionaires such as Gates.

Sinot and his team designed the vessel to safely bring passengers as close to the water as possible. "Water is relaxation; it makes us calmer and more creative," Sinot comments. "We wanted to provide those on board with the closest possible proximity to the water. The aft deck features an innovative series of platforms cascading down towards the sea, while a large swim platform allows all passengers to enjoy the optimal experience of accessing the water at sea level."

One of the bedrooms inside of Aqua shows a minimalist aesthetic. 

Aqua can reach speeds of up to 19.5 mph and features enough room for 14 guests and 31 crew members. The firm plans to complete the vessel by 2024.

AQUA LIBRE (28m /89.11’) previously Phantom, is a luxury motor yacht was built in 2012 by the famous British shipyard Sunseeker. As an ultra modern and fast cruising super yacht, she is ideal for groups of up to 8 yacht charter guests keen on exploring Greek Islands.

She will be normally cruising in the East MEDITERRANEAN, with ONE WAY charters between Athens and Mykonos or Santorini available on request. There are always at least 4 attentive super yacht crew members on board. Thanks to her twin MTU M93 super yacht engines, each delivering 2,000hp, she can cruise at speeds of up to around 20kn while consuming around 500l/h of fuel. During best sea and wind conditions, maximum speeds of up to 25kn can be reached. Her best features are zero speed stabilizers, balcony and full height windows in salon, an electric sliding bimini and a hydraulic submersible swimming platform that can be used for beach club and a recreational water toys centre. WOW !

‘Aqua Libra’ is a 91.86ft  /28m  28 Metre Yacht motor yacht built by Sunseeker in 2012.

This superyacht boasts a sophisticated, elegant exterior design by Sunseeker, and was previously named Phantom.

Aqua Libra’s classy interior layout sleeps up to 8 guests in 4 rooms, including a master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 1 double cabin and 1 twin cabin. She is also capable of carrying up to 4 crew members onboard, to make sure you and your guests enjoy all the available amenities and facilities.

She is built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, and Aqua Libra has a maximum speed of 26 knots, with a cruising speed of 20 knots.

She also comes complete with a modern stabilization system to reduce roll motion even during rough seas, and the yacht also has ‘at anchor stabilizers’ to keep things smooth even at anchor/zero speed.

A deck Jacuzzi is perfect for relaxing with friends and family, while taking in the view, particularly after a long day of adventure.

The superyacht has Wi-Fi connection throughout, so you’ll be able to check emails or share your experience on social media. A gym onboard, fully equipped with the latest exercise equipment, means you’ll never miss a work out.

Air conditioning keeps conditions comfortable throughout the cabins, so you’ll stay cool even on those hot days and nights.

There’s lots of opportunity for recreation and fun onboard, and toys include Water-Skis, Towable Toys, Banana, Fishing Equipment, Wake Board for kids or a light adult, Beach Games, 1 x Paddleboard, 1 x Seabob, 2 Person Canoe, and U-tube.

Welcome to Aqua Libra 131 Sunseeker, built in 2018. She is made of dreams and will see that your vacation onboard is a dream come true.  She has 5 cabins as follows: One Master with King bed located on the Main deck and featuring a private dressing room and His and Her bathrooms. Two VIP cabins with Queen size beds/ Two Twin cabins which convet to Double cabins with King sized beds, one Twin cabin featuring a Pullman berth. All cabins have ensuite facilities. She features unique spaces on various deck locations for lounging, dining and sunning, in complete style. A crew of 8 cater to guests’ needs. *12 guests cruising protocol
