Being Wally

Wally stands for avant garde, restless development and the conviction that form should follow function. Since 1994, these principles have spurred us to create some of the most emblematic yachts afloat. Our only rule is that there are no rules.

Our fleet reads like a rollcall of design and innovation. And its influence ripples far beyond the marine world. Wally yachts are technical masterpieces predominantly built in carbon fibre. We introduced carbon in the yachting sector, and our skill with it is still unmatched. From our first award-winning ketch Nariida, push-button sail handling has been another key feature. Then, when we introduced Magic Trim, we changed the face of yachting forever. Suddenly, large sailing boats were fun again. Wally's style is equally unique, thanks to visionary founder Luca Bassani. Deceptively simple, clean lines are allied to taught, performance-driven naval architecture.

Visionary yachtsman Luca Bassani builds a family yacht that combines cruising comfort with the performance of the maxi. As an innovator he develops a number of novel features designed to make sailing easier, safer and more fun. These include carbon composite construction, a self⁠-⁠tacking jib, swept⁠-⁠back spreaders with no running backstays, flush decks, a forward owner's cabin and a separate guest cockpit. The boat is called Wallygator … , and it makes the sailing world sit up and take note. After the 1992 New Zealander America’s Cup Boat, the Wallygator was the first boat in the world to have a carbon mast.

Luca Bassani founds Wally , . having spotted a market for the features seen in the first Wallygator. The ketch Nariida is launched - the first all⁠-⁠carbon yacht … , with hydraulic sail trimming system, submarine anchor and, later, carbon⁠-⁠fibre sails.

Genie of the Lamp is launched, the revolutionary 24m (80ft) sloop that can be handled by a single person … . Here, Wally introduces push⁠-⁠button sail handling to the world, as well as the much⁠-⁠copied open deck layout.

Tiketitan is launched, pioneering the 'Terrace⁠-⁠on⁠-⁠the⁠-⁠sea' beach club and inside⁠-⁠outside living concepts … . Technical innovations include the first canting keel for a big cruiser, Magic Trim for faster sail handling, a furling gennaker and furling boom for the fully⁠-⁠battened 3DL mainsail.

Wally B revolutionises yacht interiors … and introduces the flexibility concept.

7 Wally Innovations That Changed Sailing History

Since Luca Bassani founded the brand in 1994, Wally has pioneered groundbreaking solutions that have transformed technologies and aesthetics to the extent that today it is hard to identify any aspect of large yacht design that has not been influenced by his creative vision . We’ve put together a round up of seven innovations that have since been absorbed into mainstream yachting.

1. Carbon fibre

Everything from bicycle frames to champagne bottles is made of carbon fibre nowadays, but that was not the case in 1991 when Bassani launched his own 25m  sloop  Wallygator (now  Wally One ). Her  carbon composite hull and full carbon mast were complete novelties in boating at the time and were inspired by the New Zealand challenger KZ-1, the first big yacht with a full carbon mast, in the 1988 America’s Cup. 

In 1994,  Wallygator II (now  Nariida ) even had carbon fibre  sails long before 3DL arrived on the scene. Since then, Wally has been at the forefront of developments in carbon composite construction and when 50.5m  Better Place was launched in 2012 she was the largest carbon fibre sloop in the world.  

2. Lifting keel

When the Wally 77  Carrera (now  Lyra ) was launched in 2000, she was the first cruising yacht to have a  hydraulic lifting keel with bulb (as opposed to a daggerboard or swing keel) for better performance under sail and easier access to shallow bays. Again, the engineering systems have been continuously upgraded and improved. Wally’s first  canting keel appeared on  Tiketitan in 1998, unheard of for anything expect ocean racers at the time.    

3. Submarine anchor

Luca Bassani first introduced a ‘bomb bay’ anchor systemaboard   Wallygator II . The underwater mechanism provided better weight distribution as the anchor and chain locker is moved aft instead of in the bow, reducing pitching under sail. The system was further developed and fine-tuned over the years and is now a standard feature on Wally sailing yachts. 

4. Easy sailing

Wallygator was both the catalyst and prototype for many developments that are now commonplace. These included  simplifying the sailing systems with a self-tacking jib, swept-back spreaders and no running backstays. Wally took the easy sailing concept a step further with a  push-button system for trimming the sails on  Wallygator II , and again in 1998 with  Tiketitan and  Slingshot (now  Itaca ), which were the first yachts equipped with  Magic Trim .

The fully automatic sail trimming system developed in collaboration with Cariboni effectively meant that even the largest yachts could be handled single-handed. Wally has continuously improved and refined the automation technology, so that on the WallyCento  Tango , for example, the jib can be furled/unfurled in just 8 seconds.

5. Beach Club

A beach club or terraced main deck aft that brings guests into closer contact with the sea are must-have feature on modern superyachts. In fact, the  terrace-on-the-sea concept was devised by Luca Bassani and first introduced aboard  Tiketitan , which had a main salon below deck overlooking the open transom. The layout offered unique access to the sea and was applied to other Wally sailing yachts from 24-50m. 

6. On-Deck Living

Closely allied to the inside-outside concept is the  deck and cockpit layout . Wally was a pioneer in completely separating the guest cockpit from the manoeuvring and operations areas for reasons of safety, efficiency and enjoyment. This philosophy reached a pinnacle of purity with  Esense in 2006, where the  raised bulwarks became an integral part of the hull structure and provided longitudinal rigidity to the huge open expanse of flushdeck . 

The mirrored glass salon aboard  Tiketitan ushered in another innovation that has since become commonplace: the extensive use of structural glass. The first  strip skylight integrated into the length of the deckhouse on a sailing yacht appeared in 2003 on the Wally 80, and Better Place was the first megasailer to have full-height superstructure windows.

Launched today at the Cannes Yachting Festival , the newcomer has the same clean lines and deep-V hull of its larger predecessors but can be fitted with the wraparound fender of the smaller tenders “for those seeking more practical applications.”

Practicality is also central to the yacht’s layout. The aft deck is equipped with two separate sunbeds instead of a giant central sun pad to further maximize the amount of space. The deck is also fitted with wings that can open out to create an additional 65 square feet of room.

That’s not the only spot for lounging, either. The upper cockpit sports plush seating for eight, plus a couple of forward-facing bench seats that can accommodate four more seafarers. Below, the generous open-plan living quarters include a double bed, a large couch, and a bathroom with a separate shower. As Wally puts it, it’s the “ultimate weekender pied-a-terre.”

The yard also says that a Wally isn’t a Wally if it doesn’t perform on the water. To that end, the wallypower50 is equipped with twin Volvo Penta IPS650s that give it a top speed of 36 knots and a range of 240 nautical. The more potent “X” variant packs quad 400 hp Mercury outboards that allow the yacht to hit an exhilarating 48 knots at full tilt and maintain the same range. Thrillseekers can also opt for a “Racing” configuration with 500 hp Mercurys that can push the vessel to speeds in excess of 50 knots, though its range does drop down to 180 nautical miles.

Perhaps the newcomer has filled a speed gap, too.

First Details Revealed: wallywhy100

Wally has revealed the first details about its 69-foot wallywhy100, which is joining the wallywhy200 and wallywhy150 in the builder’s lineup.

Exteriors on the wallywhy100 are by the Wally-Ferretti Group engineering team, with Studio A. Vallicelli & C. responsible for the interior design. The yacht is being marketed as a crossover between a coupé boat and a cruiser with significant volume.

“Whilst beautiful and sleek, traditional coupés do not offer the comfort and livability that today’s owners expect from their boats,” Stefano de Vivo, Wally’s managing director, stated in a press release. “In the same way, larger and more voluminous boats generally don’t offer speed or usage flexibility. This leaves owners with a tough choice: Do they want to compromise on comfort or performance?”

The philosophy of the wallywhy lineup is to eliminate that choice and provide both. For instance, on the wallywhy100, the cockpit is pushed far forward to create more space for indoor-outdoor living areas, but there’s also a slightly reversed bow to help with performance in most weather conditions.

Wally says the wallywhy100 could be used on its own as a weekender yacht or as a support vessel for a larger yacht, thanks to its crew quarters and toy-stowage capacity.

Electrically regulated glass: The en suite head in the master stateroom has glass that can be transparent or opaque, depending on whether owners want the master overall to feel larger or if they want their privacy.
