SAY Carbon 52 first look: New flagship has the performance to match its looks

Performance brand SAY Carbon Yachts is launching its largest boat yet – a 52ft stunner with the performance to match its high-tech looks…

Weighing in at just 7.5 tonnes, thanks to an all-carbon-fibre hull and deck (around half the weight of a typical 50ft GRP craft), the SAY Carbon 52 will be powered by a relatively modest pair of petrol or diesel engines for a top speed of around 45 knots.

A hybrid electric waterjet drive is also an option, giving near silent displacement cruising at speeds of up to 8 knots. As well as its lightweight construction, the SAY Carbon 52 features a Petestep hull, which impressed us so much during our recent test drive of the X-Power 33 .

This patented design uses specially shaped spray rails that fan out from the centreline, deflecting spray back under the hull and creating a high-pressure zone at the stern that is said to deliver a faster, smoother ride as well as increased fuel efficiency.

It will be powered by a pair of 430hp Volvo V8 petrol engines on sterndrives as standard, but 440hp D6 diesels are also on offer.

Partially protected by hardtop and archmast, the cockpit provides a mix of sunpads, booth seating, dining table and galley module, plus two pilot seats offset to starboard.

Accommodation below is as you would expect for a big day boat/weekender. There’s an L-shaped sofa and table to starboard and a double berth in the bow, but owners can choose whether to have a bulkhead and door to the cabin for increased privacy or to keep it open plan to maximise the feeling of space.

You can also choose between a single large heads and shower compartment to port or separate stalls for the shower and heads on either side.

SAY Carbon is promising an interior vibe to match the uber-cool exterior. Long hull windows and a half-glazed foredeck should also flood the owner’s berth with light.

The first SAY Carbon 52 is already under construction and is expected to get a world premiere at Boot Düsseldorf in 2024. Prices start at €1,635,000, excluding taxes.

SAY Reveals New, Lightweight, Carbon 52

SAY Carbon Yachts in Germany just unveiled their new flagship, the SAY Carbon 52, a long, low, lean and very lightweight cruiser that is bound to turns heads on both sides of the Atlantic.

SAY will hold the worldwide premiere of the new 52 at the big Düsseldorf show next January, and then roll it out in the European and the U.S. markets. SY is a high-tech company that already makes a 29 and a 42 in its factory in Allgäu, near Lake Constance (Bodensee).

With a carbon fiber hull and deck, the SAY 52 weighs in at just 15,000 pounds, or half as much as a same-size fiberglass boat. It’s 51’ 6” long with a 14’ 4” beam, and it can hold 12 passengers.

Standard power comes from twin 430-hp Volvo gas sterndrives, producing a top speed of 45 knots. Other gas and diesel power combinations are available. The new 52 also as an optional hybrid electric waterjet drive, producing a silent displacement speed of 8 knots.

The SAY 52 is designed with a Petestep hull, a patented Swedish design that uses shaped spray rails that fan out from the centerline to deflect spray back under the boat and create a high-pressure area at the stern to deliver a faster, smoother and more fuel-efficient ride. (At least that’s the idea.)

On its main deck, the boat has the usual arrangement of sun pads aft, a dining table and galley module, and two captains’ chairs on the starboard side. Below, it qualifies as a weekender with a sofa and table on the starboard side and an owner’s cabin forward with a double berth. It can be closed off with a bulkhead and a door for privacy, or left as an open area for more space. Owners also can choose to have the head and shower in one unit, or on separate sides of the cabin.

Either way, the interior vibe is designed to match the uber-cool exterior, with long hull windows and a half-glazed foredeck that should flood the owner’s cabin with natural light.

SAY Carbon Yachts was founded by Karl Wagner, a carbon construction specialist who previously owned a company that made carbon-fiber components for the automotive industry, from Formula 1 race cars to Aston Martins and Porsches. He says, “Our expertise in lightweight construction enables us to achieve a unique combination of acceleration, design and agility, while lowering fuel consumption, plus extend range.”

SAY Carbon Yachts: A Moment with Karl Wagner

First, it was cars – now yachts. Karl Wagner, CEO of SAY Carbon Yachts and one of the most experienced carbon specialists in Europe, is bringing the yachting industry into 2022 with eco-friendly, electric designs. We sat down with Karl to discuss pushing innovation within the industry , expanding the brand and the new SAY 52 model debuting at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival.

How did it all start?

I saw there was room for a carbon fibre business in the market as there was high demand but relatively little knowledge in engineering of the material. Identifying the gap in the market, I launched Carbo Tech one of the first to market. I was fanatical about racing motorbikes which in turn taught me how to handle different materials such as Kevlar and carbon fibre composites.

I moved from motorbike racing to LeMans and F1 cars, later to supercars. I developed the company to manufacture components for brands such as Audi, Aston Martin, BMW and Porsche, with monocoques for race cars (Sebastian Vettel competed in his first F1 race in a Toro Rosso at Monza 2007 in a Carbo Tech build monocoque) and super sports cars to protect the drivers.

I gained the contract for the worldwide first Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) monocoque for series production for road cars with McLaren, the biggest carbon fibre component contract in the automotive world so far. I then began investing in start-ups and small companies after selling Carbo Tech in 2014 and in 2015, I invested in SAY Carbon Yachts. At the end of 2015, I made the decision to buy out the founder of SAY Carbon Yachts.

After success in Ibiza and Mallorca, what is it about Marbella that encouraged you to expand there?

The international audience and year-round weather made it the perfect location for a new dealership.

What other cities are you looking to expand to in the future?

Following the success of its Ibiza, Mallorca and Marbella outposts, SAY Carbon Yachts will also expand into Dubai in autumn 2022, followed by other areas in the Middle East, before heading stateside with an office in Miami. Therefore, you can expect to see carbon yachts whizzing past a shore near you soon!

The SAY 52, officially launching at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival, features an electric hybrid system. Is this a similar system to the SAY 29E, or what differentiates the two models apart from size?

This model will boast the same SAY DNA but will be the first boat in its class to be optionally equipped with a very smart (and patent pending) electric hybrid system, enabling silent boating in the marina and driving in sheltered bays, as well as a boost for unique top speeds and acceleration. The lightship weight will be as low as 7.5 tonnes, which is unique and the reason for the extraordinary performance whilst consuming very little fuel.

The SAY 29E is full electric, and works well on lakes, but doesn’t give sufficient range on the sea due to today’s battery capabilities.

What are some of the notable amenities onboard and design elements that make SAY Carbon Yachts unique?

The models are ultra-light, fast and powerful, ‘sports cars on water,’ yet are manufactured with 50% less fuel consumption compared to their peer group. We have also ‘electrified’ yachting with the SAY 29E (in addition to the SAY 29), offering silent boating in style; the innovative technology provided by e-mobility pioneers Kreisel Electric enables top speeds of up to 40 knots, and 40km range at cruising speed of 15 knots. Significantly, it was awarded the world’s fastest production built electric boat.

The May launch of the SAY Carbon Yachts Marbella dealership showcased the latest SAY Carbon yacht, the SAY 42, which has all the advantages of the SAY 29 including the light-weight carbon hydrodynamic hull and the Volvo Penta 430HP low-emission engine (using only 50 litres of fuel at an average speed of 20 knots), which enables breath-taking acceleration of 0 to 50 knots within seconds, but with more space for increased comfort and a master bedroom to make it a real ‘weekender’ boat, with capacity up to 12 people.

Our newest boat, the SAY 52, will be officially launching at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival.

At what point do you think the yachting industry will reach a fully electric model?

For smaller lakes it is already there, but within the next five to ten years the range will be sufficient for larger lakes and even some coastal areas.

What goals do you have to revolutionise the yachting industry even further in the future?

We must keep some secrets, but I can mention that we have some incredibly innovative, progressive ideas.

What is your personal favourite model SAY Carbon Yachts has created?

Like always the latest one. But, to be honest driving the SAY29 in rough sea is such a great experience. I would pay a lot to enjoy it.

Your developments with Carbon are remarkable, how has your work with cars translated and helped you in the yachting industry?

I think it’s a good approach to transfer knowledge between these areas, but clearly we have to accept the experiences, boundaries and conditions of yachting. As the volumes are significantly lower, engineering is less extensive and enemies like sunlight and salt are much more aggressive. On the other hand, we seem to be the first to think about weight; therefore, we have such a great field of opportunities that I enjoy a lot. Furthermore, understanding the need for industrialisation and quality is something that can help the boat industry a lot.

Aside from yachts, do you see yourself bringing your Carbon expertise to any other industry?

From time to time I get asked for advice, but currently my focus is 100% on SAY Carbon Yachts.

German boat builder, SAY GmbH has filed for insolvency, according to an official statement released by the CEO, Karl Wagner. The process commenced on January 23rd, 2024, due to a slower than expected growth in sales following their recent investment to expand SAY boat models.Since mid of 2023, the boat builder has faced lower than expected growth and sales, while the developments and expansion plans still offer a promising future. The company was born in 2006 as a young shipyard near Lake Constance, Germany. SAY first began by building sailboats and ribs with a focus on lightweight design based on carbon fiber materials before pivoting to luxury yachts.In 2014, Karl Wagner, invested into SAY and subsequently brought additional investors into the company over time. Their investment transformed the business into SAY Carbon Yachts, becoming a global leader in manufacturing advanced carbon fiber luxurious yachts. Previously, Karl Wagner founded the Austrian-based Carbo Tech Composites GmbH and grew this company to the worldwide leader in carbon fiber technologies within the automotive industry.

The team’s expertise in marine lightweight engineering and construction has allowed them to recreate boats with a sports car-like velocity, achieving a unique combination of acceleration, agility and design whilst lowering fuel consumption and extending range.

While the global market slowed over the last two years, SAY Carbon Yachts continued to innovate and grow continuously pushing limits building longer vessels, launching the upgraded SAY 42 in 2022 and the all new SAY 52 in 2023. In 2023, SAY announced the development of three new models including the SAY 32, SAY 42 Outboard and SAY 52 Open, building upon consumer tastes and plans to expand into the U.S. market.

Despite the rapid growth and positive market response to the outstanding products, the recent crisis in the marine industry took its toll. In 2023, SAY annual turnover was at €4.63M.

During the phase of insolvency, SAY Carbon Yachts is exploring opportunities to receive investment from a strategic partner to support sales and expansion efforts. The goal will be to build upon the strong brand and foundations set over the past 10 years.

Los Angeles Production Struggling Post-Strike As Shoot Days Down 8.7% In Q1, FilmLA Says

The dual Hollywood strikes are history, but production has been slow to return in Los Angeles , especially for television projects. The city and county’s film office said today that local on-location filming declined by 8.7% the first quarter, recording only 6,823 shoot days from January through March.

Reality TV production dropped 18.6% in the first quarter to 1,317 shoot days, while location-heavy TV drama production dropped 5.5% and less location-heavy TV comedy production plunged by 51.5%. TV pilots — nearly none of which were made in 2023 — saw a 842.9% rise in quarterly production but yielded just 66 shoot days.

Feature film production bucked the trend, though, rising slightly during Q1 with 634 shoot days to finish 6.6% ahead of the period in 2023.

The film office also blames runaway production, series cancellations and planned reductions in content spend as limiting industry output and work opportunities.

“Since the first week of January, people have called FilmLA to say, ‘I am still looking for work. The phone isn’t ringing. Is the industry back?’” said FilmLA President Paul Audley. “Unfortunately, production is still slow, and things are not as they were.”

He added: “Many who weathered months without access to work and income had hoped filming would return quickly after the holidays. Production didn’t really stabilize until March, meeting our predictions while falling short of our hopes.”

“Job seekers sometimes ask us how Shoot Days and days spent working on-location are connected to the creation of industry jobs,” FilmLA’s Audley added. “When we dug into the permit data and examined the self-reported number of cast and crew present and working on-location, we found additional evidence of the delayed return to work.”
