Sailing Yacht Antares III is a 30m (98ft) custom built composite performance cruising sloop from the design board of Dixon Yacht Design . Built by Yachting Developments to meet and exceed strict Germanischer Lloyd and MCA classification survey requirements, the vessel is incredibly strong yet 25-30% lighter than similar vessels built in Aluminium. The composite structure is post cured epoxy Eglass/Carbon/Kevlar incorporating high strength foam sandwich technology. The hull has a Kevlar outer skin, for increased impact resistance.

The owners design brief was to scale down the owner’s previous 40m yacht also designed by Bill Dixon which the owner felt to be to be a little too impersonal as it required a large a crew.

S/Y Antares III is well equipped, designed to cruise the world in comfort and be self sufficient for extended periods of time. Lithium Ion batteries and efficient onboard systems provide extended silent ship mode for the vessel when sailing or at anchor in a quiet bay.

Antares III was constructed in less than 400 days, unprecedented for a custom vessel of this size and level of quality. The owner considered potential shipyards internationally, but the decision to award the build contract to Yachting Developments was made partly due the limited choice in high quality composite shipyards with experience in building vessels of this type and limitations on who would be able to deliver superyacht Antares III to the highest of quality within the short build time frame.

Ian Cook, Yachting Developments Managing Director, flew to Europe to meet with the owner, the meeting was successful and resulted in the contract being negotiated and signed on the same day. Ian returned to the shipyard bearing news that Yachting Developments would be commencing build in 2010. Given the state of the economy at that time, it was the perfect way to end the year and send the staff off on their annual summer vacation knowing that when they returned in 2010 it would be full steam ahead on the project. While this short build time is not the norm, Ian Cook and his team thrived on the challenge and with the expertise and knowledge within his staff it’s not a challenge they are likely to turn down in the future.

The owner visited the project and took the opportunity to enjoy the nature and beauty of New Zealand on three occasions. For Patrick Yeoward, the Owners Representative, this was the third new build with this owner, so he knew him well enough to be able to make decisions quickly on his behalf.

When yacht Antares III was launched, the weather was not too forgiving and strong winds and rain were not ideal, but she was launched smoothly and on time.

Patrick Yeoward, Owners Representative, describes the launch “They say that things run like a Swiss watch, well that will have to be rephrased to a Yachting Developments launch… The rig was stepped, on time. The boom loaded, on time. And moored up, on time. All involved from the Owners side would like to congratulate Ian Cook and his team at Yachting Developments for a job that was most certainly well done.”

“Comfort and performance in equal measure were the requirements of the owner of the 30m Antares III project; an owner for whom we have already designed two yachts for. Antares III is a powerful yacht but capable of being sailed with a relatively small crew. Composite construction keeps weight down and allows us to fully exploit additional interior volume in crucial areas of the accommodation. Weight considerations have also affected the choice of rig, and the carbon rig and rigging, as well as obviously reducing weight aloft, will also increase stability.”

Comfort starts on deck, which is designed to have different socialising areas, with aft deck seating, the guest cockpit itself, and additional informal seating forward in the foredeck tender recess. The interior layout focuses very much on the split level pilothouse, a focus point of the design; the aft windows and door fold away to give a cohesive indoor / outdoor living space with the guest cockpit. A carefully thought out living plan is essential on any yacht, and on the Antares III yacht the pilothouse configuration allows the integration of a ‘serious’ engine room, with full standing headroom, making maintenance both efficient and convenient.

Interior comment: Jonathan Rhoades, Rhoades Young Design

The challenge for Rhoades Young was to create a clean and contemporary interior, whilst trying to avoid the usual trappings of modern styled yachts. We combined modern furniture detailing and strong formal architectural symmetries with warm traditional woods and careful upholstery detailing” says Jonathan Rhoades.

INTERIOR The horizontal grained blond teak interior designed by Rhoades Young Design was manufactured in-house by Yachting Developments specialist tradesmen. Muted tones and colours keep the interior calm, quiet and elegant.

UPPER SALOON The pilothouse upper saloon is spacious, light, and airy. A raised settee and table to port allows all round vision while seated. Large opening pilothouse windows aft allow interaction with guests and helmsman in the cockpit area. The navigation area and bar are located to starboard.

LOWER SALOON The lower saloon of S/Y Antares III features a warm and comfortable atmosphere with large inviting armchairs, coffee table to port and pop up flat screen television. The lower saloon to starboard can be used as an open casual area, alternately in a matter of seconds it can be transformed into a formal dining area featuring high gloss walnut and gold inlaid dining table.

MASTER CABIN The spacious full beam master cabin features soft comfortable armchairs, generous sized ensuite and private access to the aft deck. Natural light streams into the cabin through large opening skylight deck hatches and large fixed topside potholes strategically located throughout the cabin.

GUEST CABINS The guest accommodation is located aft on either side of the central companionway leading aft to the master cabin. The starboard guest cabin features a double queen berth. The port guest cabin features twin berths with a concealed optional third Pullman berth. The two guest cabins each have generous ensuites, the port guest ensuite also acts as a day head.

GALLEY The galley to starboard features corian bench surfaces, generous storage, a large stand up fridge/freezer, and a large custom made under floor freezer. Adjacent to the galley, to port, is the crew mess area which includes deck access and laundry.

CREW ACCOMMODATION The crew area is built to the same high standard of finish as the rest of the vessel with the addition of industrial synthetic flooring. The captain’s cabin is to starboard, the crew twin berth cabin is to port, and both have generous ensuites and overhead storage.

SAILING The sailing yacht Antares III sports a state of the art keel stepped carbon fibre mast, carbon fibre furling boom and carbon fibre standing rigging, all geared around enhanced sailing performance. The mainsheet is attached to an arch aft keeping the mainsheet clear of the passengers and crew. The sails and mast were custom built in New Zealand. The generous sail plan gives an upwind area of 453m2 and a downwind of 800m2. The owner and crew were extremely happy with the vessels performance. Under power Antares III cruises at 11 knots with a motoring range of 3,600nm at this speed.

ENGINE ROOM The engine room is impressive; it features full headroom and is located under the pilothouse. The engine room can be accessed from the port side deck and internal access is via a watertight door to starboard of the aft companionway. Access to the pump room forward is via a forward watertight door.

PUMP ROOM The well presented pump room is located under the lower saloon. The pump room houses main halyard and mainsheet captive winches, water purification units and pumps. Access is via the Engine room and crew area.

GENERAL “Antares III has been a very enjoyable project to work on, the team here at Yachting Developments thrived on the challenge. To build such a high quality custom Superyacht in the timeframe requested by the client is remarkable” says Ian Cook, “during the construction period only 3 full weekends of overtime were required, and we still shut down for three weeks over the Christmas/Summer vacation period. It was made possible by the combined team effort of Yachting Developments staff and management. It is a great boat, and I know the owner and crew will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed building it”

Yacht Antares III was handed over to her owner 2 weeks after launching; the vessel is currently on her maiden voyage cruising throughout the South Pacific .

Current projects underway at Yachting Developments include a major refit of the iconic Endeavour, a 40m J Class, and new custom build YD66 (also known as sailing catamaran Q5 ) a 30m Warwick designed sailing Catamaran.

Yachting Developments are regular exhibitors at both the Monaco Yacht Show and the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and are looking forward to taking part in the 2011 shows.

Her 6.8m wide nomex hull is specifically made for high-speed sailing and thanks to a lovely, uncluttered deck, the yacht charter clients will enjoy ample space for sunbathing, relaxation or dining while enjoying perfect surroundings. The well designed open cockpit features spacious seating for eight adults around a uniquely designed, carbon-folding table. Specifications.

LEOPARD is a 30m / 100’ luxury sailing Yacht designed by prestigious Farr Yacht design and built by McConaghy Yachts in 2007.  She is normally cruising around the Caribbean Islands during winter months or is offering UK Corporate charters in the summer months, by standing ready to participate in any high profile racing events throughout the year too. While in the Caribbean, she is offered luxury crewed charters between the Islands of St Barths, St Maarten and all the way South to the Grenadines. This 30m super yacht can accommodate up to 6+2 guests in 1 master, 2 double guest cabins, all with en-suite staterooms, plus additional two Pullmans.  LEOPARD is a very fast as well as luxurious sailing Yacht, normally cruising at speeds of around 15kn, while thanks to the predictable trade winds coupled with Leopard's high speed, guests can enjoy consistent, comfortable cruising speeds of 20+ knots. Thanks to her super yacht diesel engine, she comfortably cruises at speeds of around 12kn when under motor power, while under perfect sailing conditions; she can reach extreme speeds of around 35kn. Her best features are unique, wide beam luxury styling, great sailing speeds, the excellent 8m super yacht tender and ful diving equipment including certified diver instructor on board.

Accommodation

LEOPARD sailing Yacht accommodates up to 6+2 guests in 3 en-suite staterooms. The super yacht crew of 5 including the captain are accommodated in their own quarters. Cabin configuration - - 1 x Master with king size bed - 2 x Double with queen size bed - 2 x separate Pullmans Pullmans are mainly suitable for children or smaller adults

Water sports

For the more active guests, luxury crewed yacht LEOPARD carries a large selection of watersports toys. Luxury sailing yacht FANCY is a fast-sailing, carbon composite yacht built in 2004. She has undergone meticulous maintenance throughout the years, her most recent refit in 2021/2022. Her flush deck, sleek lines and powerful rig provide sensational sailing in all conditions.

The folding table is spacious and comfortable for eight guests to enjoy time spent alfresco. The aft cockpit is the maneuvering station with the mainsail and jib winches, the twin steering positions and access to the open transom and swim platform. Charter yachts take honors at the World Superyacht Awards 2023

The 18th edition of the World Superyacht Awards kicked off with cocktails in Turkey ’s vibrant capital, Istanbul over the weekend, and saw an impressive selection of charter yachts win a coveted Neptune trophy during the exclusive prize-giving ceremony. 

The annual black-tie gala dinner event celebrates the world’s finest superyachts of the year, recognising and rewarding ingenuity and craftsmanship in the design, engineering and construction of the luxury yachts. 

Using a secret ballot system by an independent judging panel made up of experienced superyacht owners, the World Superyacht Awards are the only peer-reviewed yachting awards in the world.

Hosted at the elegant Mandarin Oriental along the glittering shoreline of the Bosphorus, the elite of the superyacht world, owners and industry leaders gathered to celebrate this year’s event where 15 Neptunes were up for grabs, including the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year and Sailing Yacht of the Year awards. 

In an event that saw 49 nominees fight it out across 15 categories, charter yachts were awarded trophies in 7 of the categories. Here are the charter yachts that picked up a trophy at this year’s World Superyacht Awards;

Winner: Motor Yacht of the Year

Scooping the top award of the evening, the striking 75m (247ft) Admiral superyacht KENSHÕ was declared the winner by a comfortable margin, having wowed the judges with her owner-driven attributes, charter-focused amenities, high ceilings and Zen-calm interiors. She has also been lauded for her innovative engineering, harvesting power from five variable-speed generators using a diesel-electric propulsion system.

Winner: Best rebuilt Yacht

Following an extensive refit over two and a half years at the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, UK , the 59m (193ft) classic yacht MARALA – originally built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1931 – has been lovingly restored to her former glory. Judges were impressed by the meticulous work undertaken to preserve her period features while paying homage to her fascinating storied history, such as her time in military service. Her interiors have also been given the full treatment, with a distinct nod to the avant-garde design influences of the era that can be seen throughout her interior spaces and accommodation.

Winner: Best Refitted Yacht

Catching the judges’ eye, they felt the arresting 63-meter schooner yacht ATHOS merited this coveted accolade chiefly for the exceptionally high-quality work undertaken by Royal Huisman ’s refit yard in Amsterdam. Under the supervision of her original architect, Andre Hoek, ATHOS was given new booms, sails and lightweight carbon-fiber rigging, as well as an extended stern to accommodate a larger cockpit adjoining the new owner's cabin, and newly repositioned navigation station. 

Winner: Sailing Yachts, 30m to 49.9m

Built in Cape Town by Southern Wind Shipyard in 2022, the 35m (114ft) sailing yacht SØRVIND has already enjoyed a slew of nominations for her interior design, naval architecture and outstanding exteriors, so it might not come as a huge surprise that she scooped the Sailing Yacht gong in her category after impressing judges by her high-performance capabilities, charter-focused amenities, Scandi-cool interiors and highly practical accommodation layout. 

Winner: Displacement Motor Yachts 499 GT and Below, 30m to 39.9m

Benetti 's Oasis 34M yacht UNKNOWN is certainly no unsung wallflower, garnering a raft of accolades since her arrival onto the scene in 2022 that lauded her strong connection with water and nature through her extensive glazing, harmonious indoor/outdoor areas and the Italian yard's award-winning Oasis Deck®. This is precisely what inspired the judges, who admired the yacht’s open aft beach club spanning across two decks, culminating in the infinity pool that straddles two levels, and additional sense of space created by her fold-down bulwarks – deployed for guests to enjoy while at anchor. They were also impressed by the number of alfresco relaxation and entertainment areas peppered across her deck spaces, which they considered truly remarkable for her size category and worthy of a Neptune.

Judges’ Commendation: Displacement Motor Yachts 499 GT and Below, 40m to 44.9m

Deemed by the judges as “an enviable all-rounder”, the 44m (145ft) yacht ACE has certainly proved a standout contender since her launch earlier this year. Built by the up-and-coming Conrad Shipyard in Poland, the judges admired the yacht for her striking good looks, convivial crew areas and technical engineering features. Already a finalist in her category at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2023, superyacht ACE also wowed the WSA judges with her generous proportions, reimagined deck spaces and elegant interiors. 

Winner: Displacement Motor Yachts, 500 GT to 1,499 GT

Come together.

It was inevitable that the successful pairing of the esteemed Espen Øino and Damen Yachting would end up scooping an award for their geometrically striking yachts that turn heads wherever they cruise, with the Amels 60 Limited Edition yacht COME TOGETHER proving no exception. Renowned for their next-generation design culture, Damen have been instrumental in creating yachts that not only deliver on space and luxurious comfort but also harnessing a raft of sustainable features, which ultimately won over the judges. Notable features include the seamless blend between Winch Design’s masculine interior scheme with Espen Øino’s angular and geometric exterior styling, the yacht’s innovative sundeck layout and hybrid-propulsion technology. 

Judges’ Special Awards

Narrowly missing out on the Best Refit Award, the judges had been so impressed by her transformative upgrade that they felt the vast 73m (238ft) superyacht CORAL OCEAN deserved one of their special awards. Suitably impressed by her charter-rich amenities, the Lürssen yacht now features an entirely rebuilt sundeck, with sumptuous loungers and a glass-bottomed spa pool adjoining a central deckhouse housing an informal dining area, bar and TV lounge, with an integrated state-of-the-art sound system creating the perfect day to night party hub. Originally designed by the award-winning London-based studio Bannenberg and Rowell, the superyacht's styling now offers a neutral scheme with subtle color accents and Art Deco-inspired geometric motifs throughout.

The World Superyacht Awards will be back again next year to herald another superb selection of superyachts.

In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.  

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.  

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.
