3-Hour Sail - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)
126-year-old B.C.-built sailboat ready to take to the sea once again
Dorothy, built in 1897, is one of the oldest sailing yachts in the pacific northwest.
Social Sharing
A sailboat that first launched 126 years ago in Victoria, B.C., is set to take to the sea once again.
Dorothy is a 30-foot (7.41-metre) sailboat built between 1896 and 1897 by John J. Robinson in what was then the James Bay boatyard on Vancouver Island, currently marked by the Laurel Point Inn.
The Maritime Museum of B.C. says Dorothy is considered the oldest sailing yacht in the Pacific Northwest. It went through nearly a dozen owners before being donated to the Victoria-based museum in 1995.
After a decade of restoration work, Dorothy will be launched into the ocean from Ladysmith on Saturday, making it the oldest B.C.-built registered sailboat in use, according to Angus Matthews, one of Dorothy's previous owners and board chair of the museum.
- Video A B.C. group is painstakingly rebuilding a WWII aircraft so it can take to the skies again
"She's absolutely gorgeous," Matthews told CBC All Points West host Jason D'Souza, crediting red cedar harvested from B.C., along with oak and mahogany touches, with keeping Dorothy seaworthy for so long.
Matthews explained that Dorothy was one of roughly two dozen sailing yachts built in the 1890s to help launch the European-style sailing scene in British Columbia.
Over the years, it participated in many races, and the museum houses multiple trophies won in regattas held in the first half of the 20th century.
The museum also has logs of its travels around Vancouver Island and B.C.'s south coast, including a sworn testimony from a previous captain that he had witnessed Cadborosaurus , a sea serpent that was rumoured to have lived in the waters of Victoria's Cadboro Bay.
"It was an amazing career," Matthews said.
Decade-long restoration
The refit of Dorothy was a joint project between the Maritime Museum of B.C. and the Ladysmith Maritime Society.
Volunteer boatwright Robert Lawson used early photos to help him restore the boat back to its original design.
Roughly 80 per cent of the original hull is still in place, with Lawson repairing seams and caulking and stripping layers of paint away before refinishing the exterior.
WATCH | Tony Grove explains the refitting process:
Volunteers took part in restoring the deck and other aspects of the boat, said Maritime Museum of B.C. president Jamie Webb in a statement, adding that "without them, we would not have come to this happy day so soon."
- First Person I kayaked solo from Victoria to Alaska. It taught me how small I am
Dorothy will be launched into the Ladysmith Harbour on Saturday at 1 p.m. After that it will stay on display in the Ladysmith Community Marina. It will eventually be moved into Victoria's Inner Harbour once a berth can be found.

Big Blue Sailing, Sidney BC
Sailing Lessons and Sailing Adventures in Gulf Island National Park Reserve
About Big Blue Sailing
Big Blue Sailing School is a Victoria area based, Sail Canada (CYA) registered Sailing School and Sailing Charter Company. If you’re like us, you have dreamed about sailing and enjoying the fun and adventure that sailing provides. Our dreams have captured us and we want to share that with you. Our sail school offers a safe learning environment that is both challenging and rewarding for anyone who wants to learn to sail.
Big Blue Sailing offers sail training and skippered sailboat charters around Victoria and the Gulf Islands from Sidney BC. Canada.
We created the sailing school to share with people the joy of sailing. Even an afternoon in the harbour on a sailboat is a very rewarding experience. It’s hard to explain. Knocking about in boats is about as fun as it gets.
Your Instructors
When I was a child I had two dreams. One was to be a Voyageur, the other was to sail the world. Fortunately, I had access to both in my youth. I grew up in lake country in Ontario and had access to both canoes and sailboats. My parents had a little daysailer, a 20-footer, with a 9.9 kicker. We’ve had boats ever since. Growing up around the water was part of my childhood.
Now, I’m coming back around to those dreams. I’ve eased up on the Voyageur idea, but still own the canoe. We may sail the world yet, we’ll see. My wife Leslie and I have had a sailboat on the north coast for at least the last 20 years and now we’re very pleased to be located in beautiful Sidney BC. We really like sailing and the opportunity it brings.
I teach introductory sailing courses aboard my boat, Sloop du Jour.
I love spending time in wild places and use sailing as my magic carpet. My partner, Annalise and I met sailing under the midnight sun on Great Slave Lake and have continued onto some great sailing adventures on the North and South Pacific, and, of course, BC’s West Coast.
Credo III, a Catalina 36
“Credo” has seen a lot of the coast and is ready to go further. Credo has plenty of room inside for Students, Guests and Skipper and has all the necessary amenities for cruising the northwest coast. With Credo, you get a sense of what sailing in a real cruising boat feels like.
Our time with this classic Laser 28 was supposed to be a short fling. We bought her for a few races in 2022, but her sailing qualities and racing heritage soon captured our hearts. Light and responsive, she’s a fun and forgiving boat to learn on.
Our Home: Canoe Cove, Sidney BC
We are very excited to call the Canoe Cove Marina in Sidney BC our new home. Canoe Cove Marina is located immediately adjacent to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal.
Ready to Sail with us?
Canoe Cove Marina” is perfectly located, with sheltered water right at our fingertips. It is ideally located adjacent to BC Ferries, Swartz Bay terminal and right down the way from the Victoria International airport. From Canoe Cove, we are the closest Marina to the beautiful Gulf Islands.
From this new location, we will be able to offer some great adventures. We look forward to growing our business, meeting new people and having fun on the water.
Our 2024 schedule will be up soon.
We are proud to offer more courses this year.
Our courses will include:

Sailing. Have you ever wondered what the fascination is all about? Here is your chance! Our vessel is a Beneteau 351 moored in Oak Bay (a 10 minute scenic drive along the ocean from downtown Victoria). You can choose a half-day or full-day sail in and around these protected waters. Previous sailing experience is not a requirement.
You can participate fully in all aspects of sailing and even take command at the helm if you desire. You will be introduced to basic sailing skills and safety at sea. Your skipper, is a Certified Cruising Instructor with Sail Canada.
Before each departure we spend a half hour or so familiarizing everyone with the safety features and basic operation of the boat, including emergency procedures. We also introduce you to area charts which allows us to plan our trip and discuss sailing options. Our “hands-on” approach will have you sailing this beautiful yacht sooner than you think.
You can choose between an Individual Sign Up (booking per person) and an Exclusive Charter . If you sign up as individuals, we will try to find others to go with you. If you sign up as an Exclusive Charter then you and your group will have the whole boat and the instructor to yourself.
*The above prices are in Canadian dollars and include skipper. They do not include a 5% tax. Just a single or double? Don’t worry, we can find a compatible group for you.
HALF-DAY AND FULL-DAY SAILS
Sailing Adventures: if you have a half day to spend, we could sail around the Discovery and Chatham Islands. These are amazing islands: solitary, wild, natural, and set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Half-Day Sails (3 hours) typically run between 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM or from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
Having a full day allows extra time for lunch and refreshments while anchored in a secluded cove among the islands. If you desire, we can go ashore to hike and explore. Full-Day Sails will typically go from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The advantage of departing from Oak Bay Marina is that this area features the most reliable winds for sailing to be found around southern Vancouver Island. Oak Bay is especially popular with boaters because of the many islands which offer protection from the prevailing winds and waves, and provide sheltered anchorages and fun places to explore. For wildlife enthusiasts, the marine ecological reserves are home to many seals, eagles, and marine birds as well as the occasional sea lion and whale. If more challenging sailing conditions are desired there is the choice of sailing the open waters of Juan de Fuca Strait or Haro Strait.
OAK BAY DEPARTURE POINT
For day sails and cruises, Ibis, our main yacht leaves from the end of “C” dock at Oak Bay Marina. This is the first dock you will encounter, just to the right of the bottom of the ramp leading down to the water. Food and drinks are available at the coffee shop on the bottom level of the marina building and there is a fine dining restaurant overlooking the harbour on the second level. Good bus and taxi service from downtown is available. If you have your own vehicle, free and ample parking is available at the Marina. Directions to the boat (PDF)

WHAT TO BRING
The clothing you choose will be dependent on the weather for that day. Remember that it can be cooler on the water than it is on land. Bring an extra layer that should include a windbreaker of some kind. Be sure to have deck shoes or runners, preferably with a non-marking sole. The Ibis has a warm, comfortable cabin and there is protection in the cockpit under a dodger and bimini. Sunglasses, sunhat and sunscreen are a must on bright days. If you are coming for the full day, bring a lunch. We supply life jackets, non-alcoholic refreshments and a friendly skipper.
“The Ibis” is a graceful 35 foot Beneteau Oceanis 351 and is classified as a performance cruiser. She is spacious, comfortable and very stable. All sails are self-furling with all the controls leading back to the cockpit which make her fun and easy to sail.
The cockpit is protected by a dodger over the companionway and the “Bimini” offers overhead protection for the person at the helm.

Man dies, another injured after boat capsizes near lakes entrance in victoria.
A man has died and another has been injured after their boat capsized in the waters off a popular Victorian holiday spot.
The two men got into trouble in the Reeves Channel off Princes Hwy in Kalimna, near Lakes Entrance, just before 10am on Monday.
People on passing boats called emergency services to raise the alarm.
One of the men was pulled from the water by good Samaritans who performed CPR, but he could not be saved and died at the scene.
