Adventure is the keyword for this 18-meter timeless beauty named ‘MY K’. As the name suggests, the Mulder Healey 1800 is tailor-made for the Healey family, known from the classic English sports car brand Austin Healey. With the Mulder Healey 1800 project, a truly unique yacht has been developed for the yachting industry. Over five years the Healey family investigated to find the right partner to build their 60-feet yacht that matches the Healey DNA. In 2017/2018 , the knowledgeable Mulder team developed and constructed the Mulder Healey 1800 in all secrecy.

Sir Donald Healey, a successful car designer and rally driver, founded Healey Motor Company in 1945. Healey’s new enterprise focused on producing expensive, high-quality, high-performance cars. In the true spirit of their grandfather, the Healey Family decided to develop a high-quality, high-performance, comfortable motor yacht.

The search was focused on a shipyard that can build a highly custom yacht of high quality and that is practical, comfortable, reliable in heavy weather and build with traditional craftsmanship.

As in the spirit of the Austin Healey sports cars, the Mulder Healey 1800 is a head turning and unique yacht. It will immediately catch the eye due to the special color scheme on her hull. This is one of her recognizable attributes that reverts to the legacy of the car manufacturer.

The Mulder Healey 1800 will be widely used in harsh conditions in the rough seas around Southern England. This rigid yacht has been fully adapted and tested for cruising through high waves and during strong winds. The redesigned Deep-V hull form, by Vripack Naval Architects, in combinations with the twin 600 hp Volvo engines provides sufficient power under heavy conditions. She has a comfortable cruising speed of 20 knots and a top speed of 24 knots. Although she is completely ready for hard conditions she has still wealth of high-end details, including lots of teak and specially designed ‘Healey’ side-grill, window frames and bow plate, all made of polished stainless steel.

Besides the rough South English seas, she will also travel in the Mediterranean. In these conditions you prefer to drive the yacht from an open position. The electrically open roof and the telescopic driver’s seat and navigation seats allow you to sail the yacht from above. This modern interpretation of a flybridge has never been built on a Mulder yacht before and gives a special experience. Especially when the yacht is planing at top speed.

Her practical interior layout combines two full width bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a extensive galley and a roomy salon. The generous double guest stateroom can be cleverly split in two cabins. On aft deck the outside areas are equipped with large couches and an outdoor kitchen, largely covered by the extended roof with glass panels.

The hull integrity is ensured with building the yacht from top-quality seawater resistant aluminium. Thicker hull plating and a strong construction of web-frames are entirely welded.

With the knowledge of insulating yachts in the well-known Dutch Superyacht Industry, the Mulder Healey is identically built up. Massive rubber plating, sound-dampening coatings and a floating interior guarantees a luxurious feeling on board.

With the preference of using natural materials, all elements of carpentry have been carefully selected by Mulder. From the finest veneer to a single piece of solid wood. Handcrafted in-house at the Mulder yard by dedicated craftsmen.

When the grandson of Donald Healey builds a motor yacht, the result is just as arresting as the famous eponymous sports car with its two-tone paint...

You might not know the cider – or cyder, as they say in Cornwall – but you probably know the name.

David Healey, founder of Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm and the man behind the Mulder Healey motor yacht, is the grandson of Donald Healey, the man behind the numerous iconic British sports cars that bore his name.

According to David, as well as being a fine engineer and world-renowned motor sports star – he won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1931 – Donald was a classic example of what used to be known as a tinkerer.

He has a childhood memory of his grandfather fixing a troublesome door by designing, making and installing a pressure switch under the mat to open it automatically.

On another occasion, David remembers, he found that his grandmother’s best teaspoons had been modified with a hacksaw into the ideal shape for eating grapefruit.

David, 65, is happy to see himself as a chip off the old block, as he explains to me when we meet on board the boat in Falmouth. Like his grandfather, he seems to be a man always in need of a project of some sort.

The family firm he founded back in the Eighties started out as an off-licence, but it was soon also making its own cider, and then growing its own apples, and now distils its own whisky, brandy, and gin as well – producing the base spirit for the gin, naturally enough, from apples.

So when David handed over the reins of the company a few years ago to his sons, Joe and Sam, he realised that he would need something else to do, if only to avoid making a nuisance of himself by bombarding them with unwanted advice and suggestions.

The Mulder Healey is the result. Most retired people who want to go cruising would look at the boats available in today’s market and probably feel that they were spoilt for choice.

Not David. Reminding me that as well as an automotive engineer, his grandfather Donald was also a boatbuilder – Healey runabouts were very popular in the Fifties and Sixties, with more than 1,000 built – he had some very specific ideas of his own.

“I wanted a boat that was capable of maintaining 20 knots in two-metre seas, in style and comfort,” he recalls.

There are plenty of boats that can fulfil the first part of that brief – lifeboats, pilot launches, the ‘very slender vessels’ used by special forces – but very few that can do so while also satisfying the second.

Head-Turning Mulder Healey 60: Lots of New Ideas

The new 60-foot Mulder Healey 1800 comes with both a back story and some head-turning innovations, including a helm seat that rises through an opening in the hardtop reminiscent of a special effects scene from a James Bond film.

The back story is that the boat was built to recreate some of the spirit and style of an Austin Healey sports car. The boat’s owner, David Healey, is the grandson of Donald Healey, who created the famous British cars.

David Healey founded Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm in the UK. He’s now 65 and retired and his sons are running the business. He and his wife are lifelong sailors, but he says she got tired of not knowing how long it would take to get anywhere. It was time to move to a powerboat.

Healey turned to Vripack and de Groot in the Netherlands for the design, and to the Mulder Shipyard there for the build. He said he wanted a boat that would go 20 knots in style and comfort and handle the waters from the North Sea down to the Med.

Mulder just launched the boat, and Healey is more than happy, as you can see in the video below. He says he and his wife now “look forward to coming on the boat, instead of other boats where you want to go to a hotel room.”

The two-tone metallic blue and white color scheme is similar to the Austin Healey 100S; so is the small windshield on the cabin top that protects the captain and navigator when they’re sitting up there. And the yacht’s lines also are designed to be look like those on the sports car.

Sone user-friendly features on the yacht include windows that drop down electrically in the salon to provide full ventilation, and a push-button partition that drops down from the ceiling in the guest stateroom so that two couples could sleep there in privacy.

But the standout feature is the helm chair that goes up through the roof. “Everybody said I was nuts” when he thought of that, Healey says.

To go up, the captain first pushes a button to open a forward portion of the roof, then another button to raise the helm chair on a large stainless steel pedestal, until it is over the rooftop, and behind the windscreen. All the yacht’s controls are set in two armrests that rise with the seat, so the captain can run the boat from up top. There’s a matching seat on the port side so that two people can go up, or down, together.

The yacht has two staterooms with en suite  heads, a large galley and roomy salon. An extended hardtop protects the cockpit, which has glass panels, large settees and an outdoor galley.

Power comes from twin 600-hp Volvo D8 engines, delivering a top speed of 24 knots and a cruising speed of 24 knots.

“We receive a lot of requests from owners who have yachts between 160 and 270 feet who want to downsize without compromising on quality or comfort,” Nick Mulder , Mulder’s managing director, told Robb Report during a tour of the yacht at the Monaco Yacht Show. “The ThirtySix [series] is popular as it’s large yet easily manageable.”

The exterior was designed by British studio Claydon Reeves with an interior by John Vickers and naval architecture by Van Oossanen . Seaflower is the sixth unit in the ThirtySix series, but the first hull to be built to IMO Tier-III requirements.

“We’re not the biggest shipyard, but we produce one yacht every eight months, and it has our full attention,” says Mulder. “Clients can personalize the materials and layout and still only have to wait a year before taking delivery.”

One of the largest custom requests made by Seaflower ’s owners was the inclusion of a light-oak interior. When they stepped into the build last September, much of the interior was already constructed in walnut. “That was quite a challenge, but it didn’t feel right to compromise on their wishes, so we redid everything across the main and lower decks,” says Mulder.

Four more cabins—two VIPs and two twins that convert to doubles—are located on the lower deck, each with oversized windows and the option to add a Pullman berth, allowing Seaflower to sleep 10 guests.

The main salon leads into a formal dining area set against a backdrop of bamboo backlit artwork, inspired by works the owners viewed aboard the Lurssen superyacht , formerly known as Ahpo . (That 377-foot vessel was renamed Lady Jorgia in what is considered the largest superyacht brokerage sale in yachting history.) Sliding doors open onto a fold-down balcony allowing alfresco dining to drift outside.

The galley features custom-made fridges with adjustable temperatures and a restaurant-caliber steam oven. The wheelhouse, which accommodated 20 people during sea trials in July, includes plenty of seating for guests. It’s enhanced by a second exterior steering position, portside for maneuvering into slips or around other vessels.

The owners left out the sundeck Jacuzzi. “The flybridge is a large open-plan space where they wanted to simply relax, so we dressed it with outdoor furniture from Neil Jones and prioritized comfort,” says designer Vickers.

The yacht’s layout has an interior volume comparable to a 148-footer, according to the shipyard, with a crew of six. It’s twinned with a shallow draft for cruising in shallow waters.

The owners have carried the name Seaflower across many of their previous yachts, yet the Mulder ThirtySix may be their most comfortable sub-300 GT cruiser yet.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
