Double Century: 4 crazy design features from 200m yacht concept

Dual helipads – and toys galore.

Craig Timm of 4Yacht is back with another far-out concept. The Florida yacht broker – who also brought us the so-called world's biggest superyacht, billion-dollar Triple Deuce  – presents us with an almost equally improbable 200 metre superyacht concept named Double Century. But this time, rather than just releasing an outline of a yacht, 4Yacht stepped up their game and partnered with a designer to show some renderings.

Whether Double Century has any better chance than Triple Deuce of hitting the water is yet to be seen, but this yacht concept does have some proposed wow-factors that are hard to ignore.

Here are the top four wow-factors of the 200 metre Double Century superyacht concept

1. Dual helipads – and toys galore

Little-known designer Christopher Seymour has designed the 200 metre Double Century superyacht concept with not one but two helipads. And a helicopter as large as an EC135 is said to be able to be hosted in the hangar bay below.

Beyond this, the yacht would be able to host the typical water toys and some cars and submarines, too.

2. Accommodations for 50 guests - all in suites

The Double Century yacht would be able to carry up to 50 guests, and the design for this massive 200 metre yacht concept proposes that the 50 guests will be accommodated in “deluxe cabins.”

The owner’s suite and all of the VIP staterooms on Deck 7 would have their own living areas, his-and-hers bathrooms and 270-degree views.

Cruise ship-style entertainment

So just how do you keep 50 guests entertained? With cruise ship-style diversions, of course. According to 4Yacht, the wild Double Century concept will have a 126-seat theatre with an adjacent bar for a drink after enjoying a stage show. Those who don’t feel like partaking could find respite in the 200 metre superyacht's library with a garden.

There will also be some classic big luxury yacht features, such as multiple swimming and spa pools, a disco, cinema, beauty and massage parlours, gyms and saunas.

Also promised: “New York-style and Monte Carlo-style cafes.”

Eight elevators servicing her nine decks

The 200 metre Double Century yacht concept is said to have eight elevators that will service her nine decks, which in total rise 27 metres above the sea.

For those that think this yacht might be too big, well, 4Yacht assures that she “can be scaled down to 185 metres without losing decks”. And too small? No problem! She can also be scaled up to 225 metres.

As the yachting industry well knows, a fancy concept does not a new build contract make. Double Century certainly proposes some interesting wow-factors, but until there is ink dried on a contract, or better yet steel cut in the yard (and a yard named), we’ll continue to honour Azzam as the world’s largest yacht .

A Closer Look at The $770 million Superyacht Double Century

In a world where there exists a Guinness Book of records to put down whatever is deemed fit to pass down through generations as having broken a record, anyone who has the means is looking to ensure that his name is forever engrained in the minds of those who care to read the book. Those of us who have had a lesson in Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs know that for you to move on up the pyramid, money plays a huge role. For instance, at the bottom, lies the physiological needs that include food and clothes which you can never have unless you got money. At the top of this pyramid are the self-actualization needs, which usually only those who have managed to be listed in Forbes's list as the wealthiest in the world dare to attain. Consequently, someone out there is struggling to pay tuition for their children while another is thinking of spending millions in what is to us an unnecessary expense. Such was the case in 2015 when someone decided that he needed to have a yacht that would be named the largest in the world , hence the story of the Double Century as detailed below.

The need to outdo the largest superyacht

First things first for those who have no clue about what makes a yacht a superyacht; it is all about the length; any boat that is longer than 78 feet long is a superyacht. In 2010, Roman Abramovich decided he needed to make history by owning the largest yacht in the world. For a billionaire, money is never a problem, and the issue is how to spend it; this time he splurged $1.5 billion on the 536-feet long yacht that was designed after military vessels. The yacht was named Eclipse and among its many features are two helipads, bulletproof glass, armor plates all around the length of Abramovich's master suite as well as the bridge, and a German-built missile defense system. Also, of course, being the celebrity that he is, the yacht was supposedly installed with a laser defense system to protect him from snoopy paparazzi.

The Eclipse held the title, but then in 2013, someone else thought of dethroning Roman so in came Azzam with a length of 590 feet but at a reduced cost of $600 million. What is it with Sheikh's and their need to own luxurious items? Anyway, the Azzam belongs to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, United Arab Emirates' president. You should note that Roman had clinched the title from another Sheikh; Sheikh Maktoum whose yacht was 531 foot long. It took four years to finish the construction of Azzam, and its builders were Lurssen Yachts who confessed that it was the most challenging yacht to be ever built. The Azzam boasts of a speed of 37 miles per hour, believed to be the fastest for any boat that is longer 300 feet. However, apart from the difference in length with the Eclipse, they have similar features like the bulletproof glass in the master suite and a missile defense system.

In comes the Double Century

Still, in the spirit of hoping to hit the headlines, in 2014, another person thought of claiming that they would build a yacht that would cost $1 billion and have a length of 728 feet. Yes, they even gave us the name of the boat; it would be called Triple Deuce . The making of the boat would allegedly be so economically helpful as to provide jobs to 500 people. Unfortunately, not all of us can put money where our mouth is, and it turned it to be a public relations stunt. At least we know that this new boat set to dethrone Azzam is not a hoax and the designer Christopher Seymour is looking to create a new evolution of "gigayachts" so we might as well do away with the term "superyacht." So invested in the design is Christopher that he said it was just about the boat and he aimed to have it get its merit; not someone looking at it and wondering who owns it or who designed it. The $770 million Double Century which was the talk of every news channel in 2015, was announced to take at least four years to complete so maybe we will not wait for so long. As we brace ourselves in anticipation of this gigayacht whose length of 656 feet and height of 88 feet will surely make it a sight to behold, maybe we should be concerned with the features and see if anything will be different from its predecessors.

Features of the Double Century

Like the Eclipse, Double Century will have two helipads, but that is not all it can accommodate in terms of the means of transport. It has enough space to accommodate several cars, submarines and a hangar bay which has room to accommodate a helicopter. Additionally, the helipads give those waiting to take off a feeling of VIP treatment since they are complete with a waiting lounge. Further, anyone with $770 million to spare and is interested in this yacht should be ready to party and utilize some of the amenities it carries. It can not only accommodate 50 guests housed in luxurious suites and even kick it up a notch with VIP suites in case the owner is hosting the crème de la crème of the society. Moreover, entertainment is well catered for with a stage and theater, which has a capacity of 126 guests, for those who love theatrics. Of course, everyone has their unique preference, and if the guests prefer a cinematic experience, then the cinema will satisfy their needs. Sometimes all you need is a little time in a quiet environment to arrange your thoughts, and if you happen to own this boat, you will be thankful for the library with a garden. Alternatively, if you are about high-energy, the disco is all you need to recharge your batteries. Exercising cannot be forgotten, especially when we know all the merrymaking activities that will be on the yacht and so the numerous swimming pools will keep the weight-conscious well-exercised.

200 Meter Superyacht, Double Century, Launched

200 Meters: Double Century

“4Yacht is honored that Christopher Seymour has chosen us to exclusively market and help bring Double Century to build,” said Craig Timm, of 4Yacht Inc. http://www.4yacht.com based in Fort Lauderdale, FL. “Christopher is known for his innovative designs over many different size categories. Double Century brings his exceptional skills to the superyacht market and is sure to push the envelope into the next tier of sophisticated luxury.”

Seymour is also excited about working with 4Yacht, noting, “Double Century was created to be the next step in the evolution of gigayachts. I want the concept to be something magnificent, respected and admired for what the vessel is, not because of who owns, built or designed her, but for her own merits.”

“What Double Century needs is someone with vision, someone who wants to give life to an exceptional vessel, make it their own and put a distinctive stamp on the luxury yachting industry,” Craig Timm said.

Per Seymour’s design, Double Century already has an outstanding unique feature, with not one, but two helipads, that will allow owners and guests to access the vessel at the same time no matter where she is. There’s even a boarding lounge where owners or guests can gather while waiting for their flight to depart. Additionally, Double Century has a large hangar bay that provides storage for a whirlybird as large as an EC135.

Access is another prime consideration because of the vessel’s immense size. To that end, Seymour has strategically placed eight elevators throughout Double Century in key locations so that guests can easily travel to all areas.

“I wanted to bring some of these features back into Double Century,” Seymour said. “Thus, she has sheer, stem, chines, larges deck spaces and outstanding interior spaces like a theater/stage and large staircases in addition to the elevators. I would love to see one of he world’s best interior designers create an unforgettable interior that will really make her special.”

Logistically, the vessel’s layout was also challenging, with the forward section carrying a majority of her toys, such as cars and submarines in addition to helicopters, while luxury features such as pools, spas, sun beds, lounges and the like are found aft.

As one might expect of a superyacht of this size, Double Century will have the ability to host over 50 guests in luxurious cabins. The main owner suite and VIP cabins are located forward on Deck 7. All offer opulent living areas, with open room layouts allowing 270 degree views, and his and hers bathrooms and wardrobes. Aft of the owner’s suite are guest cabins for family. A small cinema, study and office are also in this area, along with an open space offering lounge and entertainment areas complete with open bars, dining and a piano. On deck are a gorgeous outdoor lounge, small bar and sunbeds.

Double Century’s trump card is her theater/stage on Deck 4 that can seat up to 126 guests to allow for stylish entertainment even when anchored in remote areas. Nearby bar areas provide entertainment for guests before and after the show. The ship also has a disco on the deck below, and includes a large dance floor, bar and turntable area.

Other notable features are multiple large swimming pools with quarter moon lounges, several beauty and massage areas, open gym with saunas, a library with a garden, New York-style and Monte Carlo-style cafes, a cinema, a huge beach club and a complete set of water toys, including tenders, jet skis and diving gear. Due to Double Century’s size, she will have her own GPS phone app so all guests and crew will know their deck location when they log on.

As the vessel is still under development, options remain open for power plants. Current plans call for Double Century to be powered by a single gas turbine generator producing 19,000kW coupled with twin diesel 16V32/40 generators producing 7,500 kW per side. These will be coupled with two pod units, making the vessel very efficient. Such a power plant set-up means fewer restrictions with layout and better placement of engineering for increased sea keeping. The vessel will have a maximum speed of 20-plus knots and a cruise speed of 15 knots with a huge 9,000nm range. A large tank system that pumps water around Double Century along with six Quantum Maglift ML600 stabilizers will ensure that the yacht will be comfortable in all conditions.

Even though Double Century comes in at 200m, she can be scaled down to 185m without losing decks or scaled up to a colossal 225m. Craig noted that the negotiating point for the groundbreaking superyacht starts at €699 million. Potential owners can expect her to be in build for about four years.

Largest ever superyacht concept, Double Century, is unveiled

Australian superyacht designer, Christopher Seymour, has revealed his latest creation entitled Double Century which at 200m long is 20m longer than the Azzam built by Lurssen and boasts a cool price tag of 699 million euros

Superyacht designer, Christopher Seymour, has revealed his latest creation entitled Double Century. At 200m, Double Century would become the laregst superyacht in the world if she is built – some 20 metres longer than Lurssen’s Azzam.

Working together with Florida based brokers 4Yacht to market and promote the concept and project, Seymour has set out to create a design that would be an evolution of the gigayacht. Achieving a sleek design that doesn’t result in an aesthetic more in line with a cruise ship is not an easy task. Nevertheless, Seymour has managed to create a sleek exterior despite having nine decks and stretching 27m above the waterline.

Accommodation for 50-plus guests is provided across the upper decks with the owner’s suite and VIP cabins situated forward on the seventh deck. Aft of the owner’s master cabin are suites for family and guests, with a small cinema, study and office also located close by. Lounge and entertainment areas complete with open bars, dining and a piano are also located on this deck. Additional guest accommodation is located on the deck below, including a second owner or VIP suite forward, allowing multiple owners to utilise the vessel at the same time. The sixth deck also features a dining and large lounge area for the owner complete with a piano and three open bars.

Stairways aft of each deck connect the main deck to the sundeck, which are protected from the elements thanks to specially developed pillars. “Angled cyan pillars cover the staircases, which were originally designed to increase efficiency when underway by deflecting wind after it wraps around the cabins,” says Seymour when asked which of the many features on board was his favourite.

Using a single gas turbine generator producing 19,000kW coupled with twin diesel 16V32/40 generators producing 7,500kW each, a top speed in excess of 20 knots and range of 9,000nm at a cruising speed of 15 knots is expected. A large tank system that pumps water around Double Century together with six Quantum Maglift ML600 stabilizers will ensure comfortable when at sea.

The project has been priced at an estimated 699 million euros with a build time of four years.

“What Double Century needs is someone with vision, someone who wants to give life to an exceptional vessel, make it their own and put a distinctive stamp on the luxury yachting industry,” commented Craig Timm at 4Yacht.

The Luxonomist

200 Meters: Double Century

The superyacht that could become the largest private yacht built to date..

It takes vision to design an outstanding superyacht, but it also takes vision to turn that design into reality. That is why 4Yacht has joined forces with renowned international designer Christopher Seymour to exclusively offer Double Century, a 200m superyacht that could become the largest private yacht built to date.

“4Yacht is honored that Christopher Seymour has chosen us to exclusively market and help bring Double Century to build,” said Craig Timm, of 4Yacht Inc. based in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Double Century features sculpted windows with a stunning sheer line and a graceful superstructure that gives her a strong presence. Covering an amazing nine decks and rising 27 meters above the sea, she is twice as long as a typical football field and just as wide. These dimensions would make Double Century 20 meters longer than the current world record holder, the 180m Azzam , built by Lürssen in 2013 and reportedly owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nayan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Emir of Abu Dhabi.

Double Century’s overall look will also set her apart from other superyachts Seymour feels that most superyachts longer than 140 meters begin to resemble cruise ships rather than private bespoke vessels because they start to lose their sheer and take on too many decks.

A small cinema, study and office are also in this area, along with an open space offering lounge and entertainment areas complete with open bars, dining and a piano. On deck are a gorgeous outdoor lounge, small bar and sunbeds.

Additional guest accommodations are on Deck 6, including a second owner or VIP suite at the front of the superstructure that will allow multiple owners to utilize the vessel simultaneously.  Other large and small VIP cabins are also located on this deck, along with the main owner dining area with large dining table and bar on either side, large lounge with piano, three open bars and an entertainment area. Outside on the large foredeck is access to the primary and secondary helipads, while aft are located several lounges, sunbeds, al fresco dining, two large Jacuzzis and an open bar. The vessel can accommodate approximately 100 crew members over multiple cabins.

LOOK: Double Century, Soon-To-Be World's Biggest ‘Gigayacht,' On Sale For $950 Million

If you need any further proof the world’s richest just keep getting richer, and make no bones about spending their cash, take a look at what’s happening these days with yachts.

When it was built 12 years ago, the Octopus , a yacht owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, was the world’s largest, at 414 feet long. A year later, the Rising Sun , owned first by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and then by music mogul David Geffen, took the crown, at 453 feet long.

And so on and so forth, until we get to today and the Double Century, a new “giga-yacht” under development being marketed by Florida-based 4Yacht . At 656 feet in length, it’s nearly as long as two NFL football fields, and at 88 feet in height, its nine decks make it as tall as a seven- or eight-story building.

double century yacht

It’s so big it will have its own smartphone app, so staff and passengers can keep track of each other.

According to a press release from 4Yacht , the boat (or perhaps we should call it a floating apartment building) has an asking price of 699 million euro, or about $950 million Canadian.

4Yacht says the Double Century, once built, will take the crown of world’s biggest yacht from the current record holder, the Azzam , a 590-foot vessel owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nayan, the president of the United Arab Emirates.

double century yacht

Spending nearly a billion dollars on a boat may seem excessive, but it’s slightly (just slightly) less excessive when you consider what you’re getting for the money: Luxurious cabins for 50 guests, including several VIP suites, a theatre/stage for 126 guests, a cinema, and not one but two helicopter landing pads, complete with waiting lounges for departing guests. There’s even hangar space for helicopter storage.

Not to mention a disco, a library with a garden, countless swimming pools, two large Jacuzzis and space for 100 staff.

double century yacht

The boat is still under development, and 4Yacht says many of the features can still be negotiated. But you’ll need to be patient -- the company says any buyer can expect to take delivery of the boat in four years’ time.

“What Double Century needs is someone with vision, someone who wants to give life to an exceptional vessel, make it their own and put a distinctive stamp on the luxury yachting industry,” 4Yacht president Craig Timm said in a statement.

Sure. Or at the very least, someone with $950 million to spend on transportation.

World's largest yacht has cool stuff you won't believe

4yacht side

Imagine how jealous the other billionaires will be when you pull up to the yacht club in this...

A Florida yacht dealer has plans to build a 656-foot "gigayacht" that would be the world's largest private pleasure craft.

The Double Century, as the vessel is known, is a monstrosity of luxury.

It has all the bells and whistles that the uber-wealthy would want, including room for two helicopters (because one just won't do), multiple swimming pools, a theater, and submarine storage (you have to bring your own sub).

4Yacht , the company hoping to find a buyer, says $750 million is a good "negotiating point" for the ocean-going mansion.

"What Double Century needs is someone with vision, someone who wants to give life to an exceptional vessel, make it their own and put a distinctive stamp on the luxury yachting industry," said Craig Timm, president of 4Yacht.

Currently, the world's largest superyacht is the 590-foot Azzam, which is reportedly owned by the president of the United Arab Emirates Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nayan.

The Double Century, designed by superyacht specialist Christopher Seymour, would be about 65 feet longer, or twice the size of an American football field and just as wide. It has nine decks that rise 88 feet above the sea.

The floating folly is so big that it comes equipped with a GPS phone app that passengers can download so they won't get lost. There are multiple VIP suites for the owners and luxury cabins for 50 passengers, as well as room about 100 crew members.

What makes a superyacht 'super'?

A party boat of epic proportions, the Double Century has a theater with a stage for live entertainment, a piano bar and "disco," as well as New York and Monte Carlo-style cafes.

When guests aren't partying, they can relax in a spa or soak in one of two large Jacuzzis near an open bar on the rear of the ship.

The dealer says the ship can be built in about four years once a buyer is lined up.

Who's Who of Hot Yacht Designers and Their New Build Projects

Posted October 17, 2015 in Brokerage & New Build by Janine St.Denis

The Who’s Who of Hot Yacht Designers

Looking for a creative mind to design your new-build project? There is a dizzying array of designers ready to realize your dream superyacht, each with his own approach and style. We took a look at some of the most exciting superyacht designers and the concepts fresh from the drafting tables to offer you some inspiration.

Feadship concept of MADAME GURU by Andrew Winch

The Patriarch – Andrew Winch Designs

After founding his company with his wife Jane in 1986, Andrew Winch has become one of the most prolific superyacht designers in the world. Some 75 superyachts, both sailing and motor, have been built from the designs that emerged from his Thames-side London studio. His mantelpiece has collected 30 industry awards for his designs’ outstanding qualities. Over the years, his devoted clients increasingly requested Winch’s designs to extend beyond their superyachts into private homes and jets, which he calls “penthouses in the sky.”

More than 50 in-house designers work at Andrew Winch Designs, making it one of the largest in the business. As creative director, Winch comments: “Our portfolio illustrates our design team’s diversity, unlimited talent and fervor for design.” Winch has worked for some of the most-high-profile clients imaginable — although he remains resolutely tight-lipped on the subject. From motor yacht behemoths like the 133-meter M/Y AL MIRQAB to the sleek, vibrant 33-meter S/Y INOUI and intricately detailed classic ketch S/Y SHEHEREZADE, Andrew Winch can adapt his style to any owner’s tastes. Some of Winch’s recent high-profile projects include Lürssen’s 90-meter M/Y PHOENIX 2; the 91.5-meter Oceanco M/Y EQUANIMITY; and Feadship’s 99-meter M/Y MADAME GU and 62-meter M/Y SEA OWL . Size doesn’t always matter in Winch’s book; his custom tender designs with Hodgdon Yachts for SEA OWL earned a Boat International Media World Superyacht Award last year.

Winch’s novel 80-meter tandem concept collaboration with pedigreed Dutch yacht builder Royal Huisman last year garnered serious attention. Based on the same design philosophy and low, sleek lines to bring guests closer to the water, the DART 80 can either be built as a motor yacht, a sailing yacht, or — for the owner who just can’t decide — both. Winch’s current projects include an 81-meter motor yacht with Turquoise Yachts , slated for completion in 2018; a 74-meter CRN new build and the interior of the largest Amels project to date: the 83-meter semi-custom LIMITED EDITIONS 272, both due to hit the water next year. There also are a brace of Lürssens, the 74-meter PROJECT THOR and 112-meter PROJECT PALO ALTO, under construction from Winch’s interior and exterior drawing boards. Why choose an Andrew Winch design for your next project? Aside from his serious yacht design acumen, working with Winch means you can adopt him into your every living and traveling space to create a seamless approach to your surroundings. And the familiarity that a designer can gain from working with you on multiple projects is priceless.

Mondomarine's M40 Concept

The Multitaskers – Hydro Tec

As superyachts become more technologically complex and structurally challenging, beauty in design originates as much from engineering as aesthetics. And this is where Hydro Tec steps in. Occupying the rare niche of “creative naval architecture,” husband-and-wife founders Sergio Cutolo and Silvia Himsolt and their team blend practical, technical savvy with a holistic creative design approach. Starting out in 1995, Hydro Tec evolved from only engineering into a full-service design, naval architecture and engineering company.

The broad skillset of the Hydro Tec team means it can offer customers a complete yacht design package, from the hull shape to onboard engineering to exterior fixtures and systems design. One of Hydro Tec’s most outstanding and rewarding projects, says Cutolo, was the 50-meter M/Y AIFOS, for which the company was hired directly by the owner to carry out the naval architecture and engineering. The engineers and designers worked tirelessly to achieve the remarkable feat of keeping the 50-meter superyacht less than 500GT without losing guest space or the ability to reach speeds of 24 knots. Although Hydro Tec can adapt to the requests of any owner, the current explorer yacht trend has graced the drawing board in recent years, featuring robust and adventurous projects. The recently completed 33-meter Darwin M/Y STORM, the first of its series and Hydro Tec’s fifth launch this year, is setting out for distant horizons with a satisfied owner who brought significant experience and demanding quality standards to the project.

Currently under construction with Mondomarine , Hydro Tec is working for a longstanding client to build a second, larger superyacht, due for completion in 2017. The M40, a 40-meter custom explorer, will feature a number of exciting, innovative elements based on the client’s feedback and past experiences, from the location and capacity of the wine cellar through to the custom-designed tender with lines that resemble the mothership. Those with a spirit of adventure accompanied by a taste for comfort and luxury could find inspiration in the next collaboration between Mondomarine and Hydro Tec in the M57 EXPLORER. This 57-meter concept is the current flagship design for the explorer series, preserving the elegant lines of more diminutive launches from the Italian builder, but with the added stability and dominating presence of a more robust platform for up to 12 guests. Unlike many explorer yachts, the exterior space maintains the feel of a sporty superyacht with three pool and Jacuzzi areas and a beach club, an observation deck and optional helipad. Yet the technical capabilities of the M57 will open up a world of exploration for any owner with an insatiable wanderlust.

The Purist – ER Yacht Design

Ivan Erdevicki’s design career started 35 years ago at the age of 10, when he would fill his schoolbooks with drawings of yachts and boats inspired by cruising vessels near his coastal hometown in what is now Montenegro. And so his own career followed suit, taking the would-be naval architect and designer first to study at California’s UCLA and then to Maine, the home of boatbuilding in the United States, at the Westlaw Institute of Marine Technology. Setting up ER Yacht Design in Vancouver, Canada, 15 years ago, he has since branched out across the Atlantic to London, offering the full suite of interior and exterior design, naval architecture and engineering.

The company’s designs currently span six to 120 meters for clients as far flung as China, Mexico, the U.S., Canada and Europe. Recent work includes the restyling of a 38-meter explorer trawler-type yacht and collaboration with Jaguar on a six-meter composite-hull tender. ER Yacht Design is currently remodeling and upgrading a 60-meter ice-class expedition yacht and designing a 25-meter aluminum power catamaran. Erdevicki distills his complex and multi-disciplinary design philosophy into a few simple words: “In pursuit of perfection,” which he achieves through a unique feeling of balance and harmony of form. The focal point of his designs is light, and the ability to “follow its natural form and direct its intensity and movement,” which is not usually seen in the design of something tangible and dynamic like a yacht, he adds. This thoughtful, almost-abstract design approach is offset by the naval architecture background that ensures Erdevicki’s work remains grounded in practicality.

A purist at heart, Erdevicki continues to create his first sketches with pencil on paper, commenting, “The most beautiful and valuable things are created by hand. Technology is all well and good as an aid, but there is no technology that can substitute for human creativity.” ER Yacht Design’s latest concept, to be built at German shipyard Nobiskrug, ADAMANTINE is an 86-meter six-deck concept that mixes naval-style strength with the elegance and refinements of a superyacht. Its angled, interlocking tinted windows give the impression of sparkling, faceted diamonds, while its profile is powerful from every angle, producing an effect that is masculine, but not overly aggressive.

Roberto Curto Design's MY50 Concept

The Speedmasters – Roberto Curtò Design

Founded in 2004, Roberto Curtò Design is an Italian full-service design, naval architecture and engineering company that has created more than 60 yachts and RIBs in the last decade. Curtò says the central philosophy for the company is simple: “listen, think, do.”

The studio’s approach ensures each vessel’s design is harmonious. It develops the interior layout in conjunction with the exterior styling, then combines the engineering requirements. The team has worked for some of Europe’s most renowned marine, naval and design studios to offer a unique mixture of skillsets and expertise. Roberto Curtò Design’s recently launched Dipiù 900SS — a striking 9.6-meter tender that reaches speeds of up to 50 knots. The fully carbon-fiber boat was recently nominated for the Barca Dell’Anno 2016 award.

Roberto Curtò Design’s roots lie in the realms of yachting and boating; it has released a concept for a 49.2-meter motor yacht, the MY50, which promises to reach speeds of up to 28 knots and boasts a masculine, modern profile. The exterior of the MY50 is all about soaking up the surroundings with minimal obstructions to its panoramic views and plenty of space for lounging in the sun on the beach club with a bar at water level. It accommodates up to 10 guests and features a full-beam owner’s cabin with superb views to the bow, Jacuzzi and sauna.

The Crossover Creative – Guido de Groot Design

Guido de Groot’s path to becoming a superyacht designer was not a typical one. The Dutchman first realized his childhood dream of becoming a car designer for Citroën after studying transportation design. It was not until 1986, around the age of 20, when he came across the build project for the fourth M/Y HIGHLANDER at the Feadship de Vries yard, that he started drawing yachts. Eleven years later, in 1997, de Groot set up his own yacht design company in Leiden, Holland. He has not, however, lost the influences of his formative years as an auto designer; many car design references can be found in his often-sporty custom and semi-custom superyachts.

Since establishing the company, de Groot’s team has grown to eight, many of whom share an automobile-industry background. This team designs the interiors and exteriors of yachts built by some of the leading shipyards around the world. Early adopters of computer-aided programs for design, the de Groot team has a versatile portfolio, ranging from traditional to futuristic. Past notable projects include more than 30 collaborations with Mulder shipyard; Feadship’s 48.2-meter M/Y CAROLINA ; the 36-meter sloop S/Y GITANA, built by Perini Navi; a number of superyachts with AB Yachts, including 41.6-meter M/Y MARIA PIA; the 37-meter Horizon M/Y ESPRESSO; and several recent projects with Van Der Valk. “I see the trend in clients’ requests moving towards spending time closer to the water, with folding-out balconies and terraces,” says de Groot, whose recent concepts have been exploring new shapes and hull forms, though some have more classic lines. The hybrid-propulsion system of the Intec Marine 90 (28-meter) and 140 (43-meter) models boast low emissions and a much quieter experience for guests.

Guido de Groot may have started his career in cars, but he has more than earned his stripes as a member of the superyacht design elite throughout the last 18 years.

The Rising Star – Christopher Seymour Designs

Christopher Seymour cut his teeth at the historical boat builder Norman R. Wright & Sons in Queensland, Australia. He quickly advanced his technical skills and also excelled at design, which soon saw him producing designs for Australian superyacht builders — which include PROJECT 58. His design style is as versatile as the tastes of his clients — ranging from the traditional to the radical — Seymour has created concepts to provide bold inspiration for any owner looking to stand out from the crowd.

Equally focused on engineering and creativity, the concepts in Christopher Seymour Designs’ stable mix advanced hull forms to the latest propulsion systems. He has crafted a range of concept designs to inspire clients, from his sailing yacht designs, including AMOR FATI and Y146, to his latest motoryacht portfolio, which includes MALIBU and DOUBLE CENTURY. “We want to create something magnificent, respected and admired for what the vessels are, not because of who owns, built or designed them, but on their own merits,” says Seymour of his team’s philosophy.

The 75-meter ONE QUEST is a bold, striking concept with a strong, angular profile and distinctive reverse bow to increase the superyacht’s length at the waterline for efficiency and ride comfort for guests. The split-level interior layout provides a range of private areas for relaxation, while the ample deck space, infinity pool and waterside recreational areas amplify the feeling of closeness to the water. Seymour’s boldest, most boundary-pushing concept is the DOUBLE CENTURY, a 200-meter gigayacht that stretches across nine decks, reaching up to 27 meters above sea level. Accommodating more than 50 guests, the concept has every onboard entertainment option imaginable. Double helipads and hangar storage for an EC135 helicopter offer impressive transportation capacity, while storage for cars and submersibles in the garage means the exploration doesn’t stop when the anchors are dropped. Smart power plant options — including a gas turbine with twin pod units — mean that bigger doesn’t have to be slower. Christopher Seymour is one to watch; great things are predicted of his visionary work. With a creative flare that excites those with a passion for the sea, his concepts are set to turn heads around the globe.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

double century yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

double century yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

double century yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

double century yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

double century yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

double century yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

double century yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Sergiev Posad

Sergiev-Posad Museum-Reserve

If Moscow is not enough for you, take a journey (of several hundred km from Moscow) and find yourself travelling through the «Golden Ring» of Russia. The Golden Ring is a name for several towns located around Moscow: Suzdal, Rostov, Vladimir are among them. If you want to know more about Russia, see old architecture, churches made of white stone, hear the bell-ring, see old fortifications, be ready to go out from Moscow. The first town of the Golden Ring, is Vladimir, located 179 kilometers to the east from Moscow with 378 thousand people living there. It is an old Russian town, it used to be the capital of Russia in the 12th century. Suzdal is located nearby. It’s an old town, steeped in medieval history, but with little more than 10,000 residents nowadays. Dating back to 990 AD, Suzdal is one of the oldest towns in Russia and the «jewel» of Russia’s history. Today the town is filled with busy churches and monasteries and its streets are lined by colourful traditional wooden houses. Having survived the blight of Soviet town-planning, Suzdal looks much as it did centuries ago and is one of the most popular tourist sights in Russia. Yaroslavl got its name from Yaroslav Mudry, who founded the town in the beginning of 11th century. Now it is a large industrial city, the biggest along the Golden Ring (630 inhabitants), however it has very interesting history, architecture, and city life. If you are tired of sightseeing and want to have some rest from Moscow busy life, you can take a breath of wonderful Russian nature, not going too far, and visit one of the nature hotels and spa situated near Moscow. Places like «Fox Lodge», «Zavidovo» or «Yahonty» are a good variant for relaxing rest, with marvelous nature around you and interesting entertainments for you not to get bored.
