Two boathouses on Clover Island destroyed in fire

by Samantha Spitz

KEPR Action News

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Firefighters battled a massive blaze at the Clover Island Marina boat dock in Kennewick Wednesday morning.

Just after 7:30 a.m., Kennewick Fire crews responded to reports of two boathouses on fire.

Deputy Fire Chief Michael Heffner said both boathouses were destroyed in the fire along with two boats. Fire leaders said the neighboring boathouses sustained exterior heat damage.

No injuries were reported.

Deputy Fire Chief Heffner said they usually use a plumbing device called a standpipe to which a fire hose can be connected to apply water to buildings.

"We had some challenges not only with the plumbing, but we only have a few hydrants out here on the island, so took a few minutes for crews to get a water supply," Deputy Fire Chief Heffner said.

He said they were able to stretch a fire hose down to the dock to fight the fire.

Kennewick Fire also used an aerial ladder truck to deploy water from above.

"We were able to get some water flowing and Pasco Fire also assisted on the water," Deputy Fire Chief Heffner said.

The Pasco Fire Department brought a fire boat out to the scene to help put out the flames.

The cause is currently under investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information is released.

(Kennewick, WA) -- The Kennewick Fire Department is releasing more of a detailed account of the fire off the Clover Island Yacht Club that destroyed two boat houses and damaged three others. In a statement released by Kennewick Fire Chief Chad Michael, the first engines heading to the scene were delayed slightly due to a "train preventing a direct response to the incident." When the arrived crews discovered a boat house fire that was threatening several other boat houses nearby.

Other Challenges

Firefighters immediately began attaching fire hoses to a standpipe system on the dock that was intended for use against fires at the marina. But the fire department reports there water supply issues due to the freezing conditions and the standpipe would not work. Crews devised a workaround, which were hampered by the frozen conditions as well. Despite the challenges encountered, firefighters quickly recovered and developed alternative plans. Efforts were focused on protecting nearby boathouses and extinguishing the fire, as there were concerns the blaze could spread to other structures nearby.

(Kennewick, WA) -- Two boathouses are destroyed, with three others damaged from a fire just off the Clover Island Yacht club around 7:30 this morning. Fire crews from Kennewick arrived on scene to find heavy flames and thick black smoke billowing high into the air from the blaze, of which the cause is still under investigation. Pasco Fire Department was called into assist with their fire boat so crews could fight the fire on the water. Kennewick was able to move an aerial ladder truck just off the river so they could spray water on the flames.

An Environmental Concern

At least one boat was destroyed from the fire and there is concern for a chemical leak, as there was marine fuel present. The Department of Ecology has been called to the scene to assess the situation. Fire crews lowered a containment boom into the water to try and contain any spill. The fire is said to be under control at this time. No one was hurt. In addition to the heavy smoke and flames, crews had to battle slick conditions getting to their firefighting positions.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Investigators were trying Thursday to determine what touched off a fire on the Atlantic City Boardwalk a day earlier that burned a section of the historic walkway and damaged part of the facade of Resorts casino.

Although the fire damaged the casino’s main Boardwalk entrance, Resorts remains open through a secondary entrance on the Boardwalk as well as several entrances along its side across from the parking lots.

By Thursday afternoon, the casino was allowing patrons to enter from the Boardwalk through one door that was undamaged, with the rest of the entrance blocked off by metal barriers.

The fire that broke out shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday burned parts of the Boardwalk-facing facade of the casino, including an awning and doors to the casino.

Fire Chief Scott Evans said Thursday a cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

Investigators were looking into several possibilities, including an electrical malfunction in one of the numerous utility lines running underneath the wooden walkway, or the possibility that homeless people taking shelter under the Boardwalk accidentally started the fire.

That was believed to have been the cause of a similar fire in February that burned up to the edge of the Ocean Casino Resort but did not damage the building itself, authorities said at the time.

About 30 firefighters brought Wednesday’s fire under control in 40 minutes, and no injuries were reported.

Moscow in flames: Huge fire breaks out at warehouse sending up massive plumes of smoke

A huge fire has broken an industrial warehouse in a suburb southeast of Moscow. The large blaze broke out at a fertiliser warehouse in Ramenskoye on Sunday

According to Russian media, the fire started at a neighbouring fertiliser manufacturer's warehouse and was caused by negligence.

The fire follows a series of drone strikes on Moscow, its surroundings, and numerous other Russian cities.

Though it is currently unclear whether this specific fire was caused by such a strike.

There has been no official response from Ukrainian authorities to this latest incident.

According to the Russian state news agency RIA, the fire reached an area of 2,700 square metres before being controlled and extinguished.

Moscow region prosecutor's office has claimed the initial cause of the incident was a violation of fire safety standards while welding, as reported by the TASS official news agency.

Russian media reports that the warehouse had been evacuated.

On July 30 and August 1, a high-rise Moscow City office block, which includes multiple Russian ministries, was damaged by two drone attacks targeting the same site.

Russia has blamed the Ukrainian military for these strikes. On August 11, it was claimed that Moscow's air defence intercepted an attack drone.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, the drone's debris landed near the Karamyshevskaya embankment in the western section of the city.

According to reports, there were no fatalities or serious damage.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry claimed that the aircraft was destroyed by electronic warfare and fell in a forest.

According to the government, Ukraine allegedly sought to strike an unidentified location within Moscow.
