How MSC’s private island experience is different for cruisers in suites
Do you enjoy large cruise ships but still want to feel like you're in the lap of luxury? Passengers booked in MSC Cruises' Yacht Club cabins and suites have access to high-end amenities – both on the ship and off.
Butlers, exclusive dining and a private pool delight guests on board, but perks also await on MSC 's private island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve , in the Bahamas. You can expect dedicated trams, towel service and a chance to book the nicest cabanas on the island, among other extras.
Read on to find out how the MSC Yacht Club Ocean Cay experience differs from that of the average cruiser.
For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club beaches vs. regular beaches
MSC's Ocean Cay Marine Reserve private island is home to seven (soon to be eight) beaches, and all are public, except one — Ocean House Beach, which is the Yacht Club's exclusive swath of sand. Beyond its exclusivity, the beach has a few other differences from the island's regular beaches.
There, use of lounge chairs and umbrellas is free. Chairs at the other beaches are also free and available on a first-come, first-served basis; however, umbrellas come with an extra cost.
Passengers must sign out towels on board the ship before heading ashore to Ocean Cay's main beaches. Yacht Club passengers can skip that hassle and ask for towels at the towel tent found on Ocean House Beach.
Interestingly, I found that several of the public beaches were less crowded than Ocean House Beach. At the latter, chairs were positioned much more closely to one another. If you're willing to walk or hitch a ride on one of the island's trams, you'll find fewer crowds on the farther beaches than if you stick close to the ship.
MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club food vs. regular dining
Free lunch is included for all cruisers who visit Ocean Cay. For Yacht Club travelers, the Ocean House Restaurant — an exclusive waiter-served dining venue where passengers enjoy their meals on a shaded porch — exudes upscale beach vibes.
During my visit, the menu included starters like crab ceviche, charred octopus and a salad with romaine, tomatoes, jicama, a poached egg and candied bacon in a citrus dressing. Mains featured locally sourced blackened mahi-mahi, lobster roll, carne asada, a grilled portobello mushroom sandwich and one of the best burgers I've ever tasted during a cruise — a blend of Angus chuck, short ribs and grilled brisket with red onion jam and Monterey Jack cheese. Desserts consisted of creme caramel, mango cheesecake and chocolate cake with coffee sauce.
The meals at Ocean House are definitely superior to the fare found at the Seakers buffet, which is where cruisers not staying in the Yacht Club can go for a beach barbecue that serves hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, macaroni and cheese, red beans, roasted potatoes and a slew of salads, drinks and desserts.
The food is tasty, but lines can be long. An alternative is to head to one of several food trucks throughout the island. Some are free and dole out the same items offered on the buffet but with shorter lines. Others sell entirely different menu items — lobster grilled cheese, fried calamari, shrimp with watermelon, Caribbean ceviche and octopus salad — with the cost charged to cruisers' onboard accounts.
Additionally — and also for an extra fee — a stand near the ship offers specialty coffee and ice cream. (If you're a coffee lover, trust me when I say you won't want to miss the Coco-Nilla Latte.)
MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club cabanas vs. regular cabanas
There are three types of cabanas on Ocean Cay: Ocean Cay Beach Cabanas, Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas and Beachfront Yacht Club Cabanas. All three types are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
They can hold up to six people each and include cold water, beach towels and chairs, as well as floating mats for use in the water. As the prices increase, so does the number of inclusions. The last two types are only available for booking by Yacht Club passengers.
Ocean Cay Beach Cabanas, found on South Beach, North Beach and Bimini Beach, are the most affordable on the island at $250 for the day. They've got walls on three sides, and they're outfitted with cushioned couches. They include the basic amenities mentioned above, and anyone can rent them.
Next up are the Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas, which cost $400 for the day and also entitle you to free lunch and drinks, as well as fresh fruit skewers, four sets of snorkel gear and four floating mats. They're found on the Yacht Club's private Ocean House Beach, so they're off-limits to non-Yacht Club guests.
The most expensive, however, are the Beachfront Yacht Club Cabanas, located in a different section of the Ocean House area. They carry a $450 price tag but offer all the same extras as Ocean View Yacht Club Cabanas.
The draw? They're closer to the water and, therefore, have better views. Although they aren't on the main part of Ocean House Beach, they are still in the exclusive area, near the restaurant, so you don't have to go far to grab food.
Ultimately, the only thing being in the Yacht Club affords you in this case is the option to book more expensive cabanas.
MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club trams vs. regular trams
At 95 acres, Ocean Cay is sizable. If you're fit, you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes, but if you don't have great mobility or if you're easily overheated, reaching some of the island's more remote beaches can be difficult on foot. That's why MSC offers tram shuttles.
Passengers in standard cabins will find tram stops with shaded waiting areas throughout the island. However, waits can be long, especially if many other people are also in need of a lift.
Yacht Club cruisers can take advantage of trams exclusively for the Yacht Club. They run between a special tent (with free cold water to sip while you wait) set up just inside the entrance to Ocean Cay and the Ocean House beach and restaurant area.
You can make special requests for stops, which the regular trams usually won't accommodate. For example, you might ask to go straight from the tent to South Beach for a volleyball game without stopping anywhere else first.
MSC Ocean Cay Yacht Club activities vs. regular activities
This is the one category where the island's public spaces beat the Ocean House area by a mile. If you're looking for something to do other than eating, drinking or lazing by the beach, you'll have to head back toward the ship because there's not much going on in the exclusive areas.
Everything from massages, lighthouse tours and water sports equipment rentals to beach parties, volleyball games and shore excursions takes place elsewhere. However, perhaps that's by design. The Yacht Club is generally quiet, even on board, and the line likely prefers to keep the raucousness to other locations.
Bottom line
The MSC Yacht Club experience is more exclusive than the standard one at Ocean Cay, with extras like butler service, dedicated trams, towel service, access to pricier cabanas and a private beach and restaurant with better food and shorter waits.
However, all of the action — shore excursions, pickup volleyball games, beach parties, the lighthouse show — happens in the areas that are accessible to everyone, which significantly levels the playing field.
Additionally, items like specialty coffee, ice cream and for-fee food truck orders cost extra for everyone — even Yacht Club passengers.
Overall, Ocean Cay offers a great day for anyone who enjoys the beach, regardless of cabin type.

A Modern-Day Paradise
OUR PAST + PRESENT
A home built by the architects of an era.
After 60 years, the finest recommendation for the design of a house is the name of McKim, Mead, & White. No other name in America commands such instant respect for its architectural achievements, whether is be a home, a club, or a public institution. Charles McKim designed the outside and Stanford White designed the inside of this home at Mamaroneck. It is not the work of successors to a great name, but of those who fave to that name an abiding heritage of dignity and worth. It is also by good fortune located where it can neveer be overshadowed by those commercial structures which, only 20 miles away, encroach upon or replace the architectural creations of a vanishing age.
Its Situation is a Peninsula of Privacy
No site could have been better chosen to unite in a single setting the diverse appeals of sea, country and town. The property is located on the East side of the entrance to Mamaroneck Harbor, in the Village of Mamaroneck, Westchester County, New York. It is just south of the section known as Shore Acres, at the extreme Southerly end of Barry Avenue, and is very easily located after reaching Mamaroneck...the first turn to the right, off the Boston Post Road, leads right into it. It is literally a private peninsula surrounded by sea water on three sides, and combines a foreground of sea and a background of hills within forty minutes from Manhattan. Here, if ever, one may enlist two sources of happiness at one time, on an estate that is...
A Twofold Escape of Landscape and Seascape
Usually, to live in the country one must give up the sea...and to choose the sea one must usually be content with flat and indifferent country...but this unique estate at Mamaroneck offers its owner the salt exhilaration of Long Isalnd Sound and the rolling beauty of the Westchester Hills together. But it is even more than both Sea and Country. It is also quite definitely Town. Town not only in the suburban sense of Mamaroneck, which has its shops and its movies and its ownmain throughfar...but Town in the sense of its quick suburban convience to New York. For, though it's a million light years from the maelstrom of Manhattan, it's only 20 miles from Columbus Circle. And it is serviced by 40 to 50 trains a day from Grand Central Station.
A PROPERTY OF COMPACT MANAGEABLE PROPORTIONS
The tendency today in estates is away from sprawling acreage and towards practical compact sites. This property consists of approximately 12.29 acres of land fronting on three bodies of water: Otter Creek; Channel leading to Mamaroneck Harbor; and Long Island Sound; and is protected by a sea wall of heavy masonry. It is beautifully landscaped with lawn and garden and stands of trees that run down to the water's edge, and some of the trees are rare and magnificent specimens, imparting to the scene the enduring sense of their own stability. There are 2 tennis courts, 2 handball courts, numerous blue stone driveways, parking space for 200 cars, and a white sand bathing beach approximately 300 feet wide. There is also an exceptionall good yacht anchorage, with heavy stone landing dock, where sizeable craft can come in at all tides.
Excellence takes time.
"It is literally a private peninsula surrounded by seawater on three sides and combines a foreground of sea and a background of hills within forty minutes from Manhattan."
No site could have been better chosen to unite sea, country and town.

Cape Coral aiming to reopen the Yacht Club beach area by Veterans Day
After a year-long closure because of Hurricane Ian, Cape Coral officials say they hope to open the Yacht Club Community Park's beach in the next 10 days.
Here's what you need to know.
When is the beach opening?
Cape Coral Spokesperson Melissa Mickey said the Yacht Club beach is to reopen in mid-November.
A city news release announced a news conference on Nov. 9, for the opening Nov. 10.
"We know there's a lot of work ahead with the Yacht Club, but we thought it was important at least for the residents to get the beach reopened," Councilmember Tom Hayden said "Which is still the plan at least so it would give the community, I think, a little bit of normalization that the club is there for use, at least the beach part of it."
Previous Coverage Cape Coral Yacht Club project moving forward as beach opening is slated mid-November
More Cape Coral news Cape Coral's cost of living: City ranks in top 6 in U.S. for most-burdened renters
Background for closure
The city had planned to close the area for two years for renovations that included replacing the seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a three-story parking garage and beach restrooms.
The beach would also be expanded, and utilities relocated.
Then Hurricane Ian struck on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying plans, and shuttering the beach.
What work is being done?
Cape Coral announced it received the OK to move forward with beach nourishment at the Yacht Club last week, and has begun the process.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection also approved sand renourishment permits for the beach.
Workers with heavy machinery combed through the beach Tuesday morning, adding sand in areas that are lacking.
Temporary restrooms will be delivered to the area; the city removed the existing bathrooms in September.
Once all the conditions have been satisfied, the temporary perimeter fence at the beach will be removed.
The Cape Coral Yacht Club Boat Ramp remains closed.
What's open?
While the main Yacht Club Ballroom building is closed, alongside the surrounding buildings and amenities, The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill Restaurant is open.
The restaurant opened in July and, along with it, the surrounding parking lot.
What about the rest of the Yacht Club?
The city also plans to adjust the original renovation plans, which could include a two-story ballroom, removing the tennis courts, and rearranging the area to accommodate a parking garage and restaurant.
Many residents opposed this plan and, despite strong opposition, the city intends to move forward with a complete demolition by early 2024.
Kimley-Horn will present the Yacht Club master plan and concepts from earlier this year to the city council on Nov. 8.
In advance of the opening, Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter, District 1 Councilmember Bill Steinke, and City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn will discuss the reopening of the Yacht Club Community Park Beach area at noon on Nov. 9.

All dining is outdoors with high tops, regular tables and bar seating. Some of the seating is under the cover of 2 huge tiki huts and some of it is out in the open at tables that have umbrellas.
There are 2 bars, one at either end of the restaurant. No matter where you sit though, you'll love the water views of the Caloosahatchee River.
You'll find appetizers, soups, salads, seafood baskets, sandwiches, burgers, and paninis. Prices for entrees range from $8.95-$19.95.
I got the Mahi Mahi Tacos, served in a basket that I thought was just the right portion size.
Members of my group gave thumbs up to the Pulled Pork, Caribbean Chicken Salad, and Mahi Mahi Sandwich.
You can also catch your own fish from the nearby pier ........ and Boathouse will cook it for you!
They have a place to gas up your boat and to dock on the side of the restaurant if you're out fishing or boating.
The bar serves signature and classic cocktails; draft, canned, and seasonal craft beers; red and white wines.
Two of their desserts looked intriguing .......... Key Lime Pie on a Stick and Orange Blossom Pie. I tried the Key Lime Pie and it was pretty amazing!
Go for breakfast, they are open daily from 8AM-10PM. Plans are in the works to open a snack cart right on the beach.
Park for free at the beach or pay a little extra for valet parking close to the restaurant. By the way, you'll love the sunsets!

Designer-renovated 1950s-era house fetches $13.9 million on North End of Palm Beach
Boca raton woman buys updated mid-century-modern house at 272 via marila, which was previously renovated by interior decorator caroline rafferty..
After a sluggish start to the New Year , the North End of Palm Beach has been abuzz over the past several weeks with real estate activity, including a sale just recorded at $13.9 million for an extensively renovated house built in the late 1950s at 272 Via Marila.
Melissa Wight was the buyer, according to the deed recorded Wednesday. She has a home in the Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club in Boca Raton, the document shows.
On the seller’s side of the Via Marila deal was a trust named after the property’s address, for which Palm Beach real estate attorney Guy Rabideau serves as trustee. He declined to comment about the sale, and because of rules governing trusts, no other information about anyone associated with the trust was available in public records.
The seller bought the already-renovated 1959 house in May 2021 for a $11.35 million , property records show. The house just changed hands for $2.55 million more than the price recorded in that deal.
The mid-century modern-style house has five bedrooms and 6,333 square feet of living space, inside and out. It stands on a lot of about two-fifths of an acre, several streets north of the Palm Beach Country Club and a few houses east of North Lake Way.
In the 2021 deal, the 272 Via Marila Trust bought the house from investments adviser Nicholas K. Rafferty and his wife, Palm Beach interior decorator Caroline Rafferty, who had overseen a major renovation of the property.
Among its features, the house has a well-equipped kitchen — described in the most recent sales listing as “the heart of the home” — with an oversize work island and top-of-the-line appliances. The kitchen overlooks an outdoor dining space near the pool.
The layout also includes a library and a wet bar. The master bedroom has its own sitting room and two closets. A second-floor space has been used as a gym but could double as a guest bedroom, according to the sales listing.
In the 2021 sale, Douglas Elliman Real Estate agents Ashley McIntosh and Chris Leavitt represented the trust that bought the house from the Raffertys. The same agents returned to list the property for sale last June.
Broker Christian Angle of Christian Angle Real Estate acted on behalf of the buyer in the most recent sale. He knew the house well, having represented the Raffertys when they sold it nearly three years ago.
Melissa Wight and Angle could not be reached for comment about the sale on Via Marila.
The latest Palm Beach County tax rolls show Wight and her husband, Russell B. Wight Jr., have their Boca Raton house homesteaded as their primary residence. He is a businessman and real estate entrepreneur with ties to New Jersey, according to a brief biographical sketch on the website for The Wight Foundation, a Newark-based charitable organization.
The house on Via Marila originally carried a price of $19.5 million, which dropped to $16.45 million in October before settling at $15.45 million in January, the multiple listing service shows.
The property landed under contract on Feb. 26, and the deal closed less than two weeks later, according to the MLS.

Disney Yacht Club vs Beach Club – what’s the difference?
W hen traveling to Walt Disney World, one of the first things you need to decide is where you’ll stay. But there are so many options, how do you choose?! We have so many posts about Disney resorts and choosing the right one . So, we decided to dive a little deeper into some of the resorts that guests sometimes have a hard time choosing between to help you find the right resort for you. Today we are comparing Disney’s Yacht Club vs Disney’s Beach. What’s the difference and which is right for you?
Disney Yacht and Beach Club
Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club are often considered one in the same. Which is easy to see why. But they’re actually different resorts, with different room types and different vibes. Yes, they share many things. Their famous pool complex, Stormalong Bay, is a big reason why many guests choose to stay here. Transportation is exactly the same as are many of their other amenities like the arcade, resort gym and Movies Under the Stars. Situated right next to each other, their lobby doors are no more than 5 minutes away from each other. Making it easy to enjoy all that both resorts have to offer when staying at either location.
So let’s take a quick look at each one and compare these two deluxe resorts at Disney World .
Disney’s Yacht Club
Disney’s Yacht Club is the series of gray buildings with the little red awnings on Disney’s Boardwalk. Known for a more upscale theme than its sister resort, the Beach Club, the Yacht Club is sometimes considered a bit stuffy. We don’t find that to be the case at all, but it definitely has a more high-end vibe than Beach Club. It’s themed to a New England Yacht Club, which makes sense that it would feel a bit more elite.
Yacht Club is home to Ale and Compass Restaurant and Yachtsman Steakhouse. And also has Ale and Compass Lounge and the Marketplace at Ale and Compass. Though guests staying at either resort can easily take advantage of the quick service and lounges at both resorts since they are so close together.
Disney’s Beach Club
Disney’s Beach Club Resort is the closest resort to Epcot Park. Located about a 5-minute walk from the International Gateway and the Skyliner, you just can’t get any closer. Known for its dreamy blue buildings and laid-back vibe, this resort tends to be a guest favorite. Disney’s Beach Club technically has beaches, and Yacht Club technically does not. But we don’t really consider that, as the beaches aren’t really resort specific, as anyone can use them, and they are still quite close to Yacht Club. Beach Club is also a DVC property, which means it has a lot of room types to offer. Standard rooms, along with studios and villas give guests a lot more options here.
Beach Club houses its main dining, Cape May right off the lobby. This is both a good thing and a not-so-great thing in our opinion. For guests visiting, it’s easy to find. Which is great! But generally, when the main restaurant is in a resort lobby at Disneyworld, we notice that the lobby tends to be more chaotic for guests staying there. And while anyone is welcome to visit any resort at Disney, resorts with popular restaurants on the main floor will almost always be more crowded than those without, or with their restaurants in a different location.
What’s the difference? Disney Yacht Club Vs Beach Club
First and foremost, the biggest difference between these two is the theming. They are generally about the same distance to Epcot. Though Beach Club is definitely closer, the amount is minimal. And since it is larger than Yacht Club, the location of your room can make a big difference in terms of how long it may actually take you to get to the Park Entrance.
Aside from this, the vibe and atmosphere is another determining factor. Beach Club is going to be more kid focused, with its character restaurant Cape May right in the lobby. And a more fun and whimsical theme. Yacht Club, though still good for families, is a more grown up feel and has no character meals that would draw families from outside of the resort.
One of the big differences we noticed between these two resorts is the room layouts. For their standard rooms, Yacht Club is set up with the beds in one area, and the ability to close off the area with the vanity, bathroom and shower. This is not the case with Beach Club. Their rooms don’t close off the vanity section, which is a bit odd and can make getting ready in the mornings a bit more difficult.
The things that are exactly the same between the two resorts are the bigger considerations, like the price, pool, food courts, location and transportation.
Yacht Club vs Beach Club: Which is best?
For us, Yacht Club feels like a more elevated experience and feels more “worth it” as a result. It’s quieter, in better upkeep and has better room layouts for its standard guest rooms. We like the food court here better than at Beach Club, as it offers more hot foods. Though the quick service restaurants at either resort are not super impressive, Yacht Club’s choices are better.
We love a laid-back vibe, but due to Beach Club’s closer location and having one of the best character breakfasts on Disney property , the lobby here can often get a little crowded and feel somewhat chaotic. The same goes for Christmastime when the Beach Club puts up their stunning Gingerbread Carousel for the holiday season at Disney . And unfortunately, the resort is in some serious need of TLC. The room layout at Beach Club was also not our favorite. And we think it has one of the worst quick service options at Disney. Which isn’t a big deal because you have easy access to food anywhere on Disney’s Boardwalk . But it also can be really inconvenient when you’re just trying to find food quickly.
As you can see, it all comes down to personal opinion. For many people, Beach Club takes the cake. For us, we think Yacht Club has a slight edge and will likely tend to choose it over Beach Club in the future. Do you have a favorite?

Note: Pardon the dust. Demolition of the main ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and Harbormaster's building is expected to begin in Dec/Jan 2023. Fencing will surround the Yacht Club's facilities as work is being done and should have little to no impact on the beach or its parking.

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In
FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.
Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.
Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.
Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms.
